Unit Seven looked worse in daylight. Mateo had not thought that was possible. The garbage truck sat nose-first against a street tree on Mason and 8th, one tire blown, windshield cracked, compactor half-open like a jaw mid-yawn. Blue tutorial motes drifted around it. Someone had written WASH ME in the dust on the side years ago, and the words had survived rain, apocalypse, and a Shard-Bag attack with insulting confidence. Rosa stood beside him with the ration cart parked against the curb.
"This is not a truck," she said.
"This is a municipal corpse."
"It has potential."
"So did the unknown bucket."
"The unknown bucket lacked hydraulic lines." Niko walked around Unit Seven, tapping the side panels with one knuckle. Mrs. Vance opened the battery compartment and made a noise that could have meant hope or contempt. Darren stood watch with a metal pole and his Marked Down status sticker still clinging to his vest. Marcus carried ration packs toward Juniper with two food court volunteers, glancing back every few seconds like the street might change its mind. It did.
A manhole cover at the end of the block lifted half an inch, then settled. Everyone saw it. Rosa raised her spear.
"Time budget?" Mateo opened Route Claim. ROUTE CLAIM Class Skill - Salvage Authority Effect: establish a civic route between claimed nodes, marking hazards, salvage points, and temporary safe lanes. Current claimed nodes: Juniper Sanctuary, Mason Water Tower, Crown Mall Food Court Eligible route anchor: Unit Seven / Route Memory Warning: routes imply responsibility.
"Responsibility," Mateo said.
"The system has discovered threats."
"Can it discover paid leave?" Rosa asked. He touched Unit Seven's side with the Token Hook. The truck responded. Not like the transfer station. Not like a mountain of salvage. More like a tired animal recognizing the person who had fed it diesel and complaints for years.
Unit Seven Status: Disabled / Route Memory intact Damage: blown tire, cracked windshield, dead starter battery, jammed compactor, contaminated hopper, low fuel Available upgrades: Mobile Salvage Platform, Route Beacon, Compactor Bite, Terrible Idea With Horn"Do not choose the horn," Rosa said.
"I did not say anything."
"Your face likes horns too." Mrs. Vance leaned out from the battery compartment.
"Starter battery is dead. Not metaphorically. It has gone to battery heaven."
"Can the forklift batteries from Juniper help?" Mateo asked.
"Yes, if you enjoy fires."
"Controlled fires?"
"That depends on Darren." Darren looked offended.
"Why does electricity keep becoming my character arc?"
"Because you picked Lightning Broker," Rosa said.
"I panicked."
"Most resumes begin there." Niko crouched by the blown tire.
"We can patch, but not long." The manhole cover lifted again. Something below scraped metal. Sort the Pile swept the street. Nearby materials: Unit Seven, dead sedan, delivery van tire, street tree cable, mailbox, construction plates, parking meter, road cones, manhole cover Subsurface movement: Drain Gnawers x unknown Suggested priority: restore mobility before street opens.
"Drain Gnawers," Mateo said. Rosa nodded once.
"I hate them efficiently." They moved. Niko and two volunteers jacked Unit Seven with a construction plate and pallet jack handle. Mateo claimed the delivery van tire, street tree cable, and road cones. Emergency Assembly offered three tire options. Two were sensible. One was called Civic Donut. He chose the sensible one because Rosa was watching. The replacement tire formed from van rubber, cable binding, and street cone warning strips. It looked ugly but round enough to argue with physics.
Assembly complete: Route Patch Tire, Grade E+ Estimated lifespan: 9 miles or one dramatic turn"No dramatic turns," Rosa said.
"You keep taking away my tools." Mrs. Vance rewired the starter with Crown Mall heat-lamp cabling, copper from the water tower, and one battery module from a dead forklift that she repeatedly described as "not ideal," which Mateo had learned meant "possible but morally grey." Darren held the current loop and muttered about professional boundaries. This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. The manhole cover jumped. A Drain Gnawer squeezed through.
It was long and low, a sewer-born thing made from bent rebar, wet wipes, bottle caps, and black sludge. Its head was a storm-drain grate with too many teeth. It snapped at the air and dragged half its body onto the street. Enemy detected: Drain Gnawer Level 3 Behavior: tunnel / chew tires / ruin infrastructure quietly"Protect the tire!" Mateo shouted. Niko stepped between the Gnawer and Unit Seven. The Jaw Shield hit the creature's mouth with a clang that made every tooth rattle.
Rosa stabbed down with the No Parking spear. The Gnawer twisted, shedding sludge, and tried to dive under the truck. Darren fired a bolt. It struck the wet street, jumped into the manhole, and lit the opening blue. A chorus of angry scraping answered from below.
"I may have negotiated with more of them," Darren said.
"Stop networking!" Rosa yelled. Mateo hooked the Gnawer by its grate-head and pulled. The Token Hook tore loose a strip of rebar spine. Niko crushed the exposed body under the Jaw Shield. Rosa finished it with a twist of the spear. Enemy defeated: Drain Gnawer Level 3 Recovered: Rebar Spine x2, Grate Teeth x5, Sludge Thread x3 The manhole cover exploded upward. Four more Gnawers poured out. Mateo had sixteen Focus. Not enough to rebuild a truck and fight a sewer pack forever.
He looked at the manhole cover spinning on the pavement. Cover. Ring. Teeth. Complaint. Emergency Assembly available: Civic Plug Required: manhole cover, Grate Teeth, street cone, Public Complaint residue Cost: 3 Focus Effect: block tunnel breach temporarily; enemies may file around it.
"Rosa, complaint residue!"
"We are out of official complaints!"
"Then yell one!" Rosa did not hesitate. She turned toward the hole and projected eight years of dispatch into a single sentence.
"This is not an approved access point!" The system accepted it. A blue scrap labeled Public Complaint Residue appeared over the manhole.
"That is deeply upsetting," Darren said. Mateo claimed it with the cover, teeth, and a traffic cone. The Civic Plug slammed into the open hole like a lid on a pressure cooker. The Gnawers inside hit it from below. The street jumped. The plug held. For now. Mrs. Vance slapped Unit Seven's battery compartment shut.
"Try it!" Mateo climbed into the cab. For half a second, he was simply at work. The seat knew him. The mirrors were wrong. The radio clipped to the dash was dead. The steering wheel was sticky in a familiar way that had nothing to do with monsters. His lunch bag still sat on the floor, now glowing faintly because the system had opinions about everything except emotional boundaries. He turned the key. Unit Seven coughed. Once. Twice. Then the engine roared alive. Everyone outside cheered.
The truck's system window unfolded across the cracked windshield. ROUTE ANCHOR ACCEPTED Unit Seven recognized as Mobile Salvage Platform candidate. Spend materials to upgrade? Required: Civic Token x3, Hydraulic Line, Rebar Spine x2, Route Memory, Focus x8"Route Memory?" Mateo said. The truck answered by showing him streets. Juniper to Mason. Mason to the water tower. Water tower to Crown Mall. The alley behind the laundromat. The apartment over Spin City.
The bus shelter where Evan and his grandfather had almost died. The sofa in the storm drain, because the universe was petty. Route Memory was not a component. It was him.
"Fine," he said.
"Upgrade." The three Civic Tokens lifted from his satchel. The hydraulic line from Unit Seven's side compartment unwound like a metal snake. The Rebar Spines snapped under the chassis. Blue light crawled through the compactor, the lift arms, the mirrors, the radio, the Route Patch Tire. Unit Seven changed. Not much. Not into a tank. Not into a heroic machine with spikes and flames. It became more itself. The compactor teeth aligned with a hungry metallic click. The side lift reinforced itself with rebar.
Blue route markers glowed along the bumper. The cracked windshield sealed into a spiderweb of translucent system glass. The radio sparked. Upgrade complete: Mobile Salvage Platform, Grade D Capabilities: Route Claim anchor, Scrap Pull radius, Compactor Bite, limited resident transport Downside: still smells like old coffee. Mateo laughed. The radio crackled.
"Unit Seven?" Rosa froze outside the cab. Mateo grabbed the radio.
"Say again." Static. Then a voice, thin and distant.
"This is Unit Twelve at Municipal Garage. If any city channel is alive, respond. Garage is compromised. We have fuel, tools, and twenty civilians. Repeat, garage compromised." Rosa climbed onto the step, eyes sharp.
"Who is Unit Twelve?" Mateo asked.
"Gloria Baines," Rosa said.
"Street maintenance. She eats supervisors for breakfast." Mateo pressed the radio button.
"Unit Twelve, this is Unit Seven. We hear you." The answer came after a burst of static.
"Ruiz? Is that you?"
"Yes."
"Why do you sound like you are driving through a video game?"
"Long morning."
"It is the apocalypse."
"Long apocalypse." Gloria barked something that might have been a laugh. Then the radio filled with a crash and shouting.
"We have equipment constructs in Bay Two," she said.
"Forklifts are moving by themselves. One ate a sedan. We are barricaded in the parts office. If you have a way through, we need extraction or backup." A new route marker burned across Mateo's windshield. Route Claim opportunity: Municipal Garage Distance: 1. 8 miles Threat estimate: C+ rising Potential rewards: fuel, tools, vehicle parts, city radio hub, survivors Warning: autonomous heavy equipment detected. Rosa read it over his shoulder.
"Forklifts," she said.
"Moving by themselves."
"Eating sedans."
"That was implied." Niko climbed onto the rear step with the Jaw Shield. Mrs. Vance loaded copper wire into the side compartment. Darren looked at the truck, the Civic Plug bucking in the street behind them, and the route marker burning toward the garage.
"Do we have to go now?" he asked. The Civic Plug cracked. Drain Gnawers screamed underneath. Mateo put Unit Seven in gear.
"Yes." The truck lurched forward. The first Gnawer burst through the plug behind them. Mateo hit the compactor control by instinct and system prompt at the same time. Compactor Bite ready. Unit Seven's rear jaws opened. The Gnawer lunged. The compactor caught it midair and crushed it into salvage with a crunch that made everyone on the truck go silent.
Enemy defeated: Drain Gnawer Level 3 Mobile Salvage Platform recovered: Rebar Spine x1, Sludge Thread x2, Civic Token Fragment x1 Rosa took in the controls for a beat.
"You are never going to be normal about this truck again."
"I was normal before?"
"No. But there were limits." They rolled down Mason Street under the blue dome, past abandoned cars and broken signs, past the laundromat and the bus shelter, past streets that now glowed faintly with Route Claim markers. People watched from windows. Some waved. Some pointed. One man in a bathrobe saluted with a coffee mug. Unit Seven answered with a horn blast. It sounded terrible. It sounded alive. A system window unfolded across the windshield.
ROUTE SEVEN CLAIMED Juniper Municipal Transfer Station to Mason Water Tower to Crown Mall Food Court to Municipal Garage approach. Route status: Dangerous / Active / Yours, apparently Residents on linked route gain minor navigation prompts. Authority Holder gains responsibility for route hazards.
"Apparently," Mateo said. Rosa settled into the passenger seat with her clipboard.
"Congratulations. Your route got promoted from garbage pickup to civilization pickup." Mateo looked through the system-glass windshield toward the municipal garage. Something huge moved between the buildings ahead. Forklift mast. Rotating beacon. Too many wheels. The radio crackled again. Gloria's voice came through, strained and furious.
"Unit Seven, if that is you making all that noise, hurry up. The big one just found the fuel pumps." Mateo tightened his hands on the wheel. Unit Seven growled under him.
"Copy," he said.
"Route Seven inbound."
