There were three things Mateo did not want near a fuel pump: sparks, monsters, and city employees with opinions. The municipal garage gave him all three. The red emergency lights washed over the yard while the concrete beside the diesel island rose and cracked. Survivors backed toward the parts office. Pickles stood in front of Gloria with her hackles up, barking at the ground like it had failed inspection. Rosa climbed onto Unit Seven's running board and scanned the fuel island.
"Tell me that is not a boss."
"It is probably a facility incident."
"Mateo."
"Fine. It is a boss with zoning." The first pump tore loose from its base. It did not explode. Mateo appreciated that. Instead, hoses whipped outward like black tentacles. Gasoline hissed into the air and stopped three inches from the ground, caught in blue system light. The pump dragged itself upright on rebar legs, price display flickering between numbers and warnings.
Node Guardian emerging: Pump Jackal Level 6 Behavior: siphon fuel / ignite routes / punish waste Condition: connected to buried tank network Warning: fire risk catastrophic, morale risk worse"Pump Jackal," Darren said.
"That sounds expensive." Gloria slapped a wrench into her palm.
"It is standing on forty thousand gallons of city diesel. Everything about it is expensive." The Pump Jackal's display flashed. PRICE PER GALLON: BLOOD"Nope," Rosa said.
"Absolutely not. We are not paying surge pricing to a haunted pump." The Pump Jackal lunged. Its hoses snapped toward Unit Seven. Mateo threw the truck into reverse. A hose slapped the windshield and smeared oily blue flame across the system glass. The Route Siren barked. The Jackal flinched but did not stop. Mrs. Vance shouted from the charger wall.
"No lightning!" Darren already had both hands in the air.
"I am growing as a person!" Mateo opened Sort the Pile and forced himself to look past fear. Available safe materials: sand barrel, spill absorbent, fire blanket, hose clamps, grounding cable, pump shutoff bar, oil pans, caution signs Unsafe materials: sparks, open flame, Darren unsupervised, heroic speeches near vapor Possible assembly: Spill Saint, Grade unknown"Spill Saint," Mateo said. Gloria turned.
"That is a kit, not a saint."
"The system likes drama."
"So do inspectors." The Pump Jackal dragged itself toward the diesel tanks. Every step pulled more fuel into the air, shaping it into a shimmering leash between pump and ground. If it reached the buried tank caps, the whole node would become a bomb with opinions. Mateo jumped down from Unit Seven. Rosa caught his sleeve.
"You have a truck."
"Truck has sparks."
"I hate when you are right in ways that require running." They ran. Niko and two garage workers rolled sand barrels into the lane. Gloria threw hose clamps like knives. Mrs. Vance dragged a grounding cable toward the shutoff panel. Darren followed her, visibly resisting the urge to be interesting. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator. The Pump Jackal snapped a hose at Rosa. Pickles barked.
The hose froze long enough for Rosa to pin it with the No Parking spear.
"Good inspector!" Rosa shouted. Pickles wagged once and resumed legal hostility. Mateo claimed the spill absorbent, sand barrel, oil pans, caution signs, fire blanket, and a pump shutoff bar. Focus drained through him. The parts tried to become a shield. He pushed them into a rule instead. Emergency Assembly: Spill Saint Function: contain volatile liquid, suppress ignition, convert fuel waste into node claim credit Cost: 7 Focus Warning: requires someone boring and responsible to hold the shutoff bar.
"Murray," Rosa said instantly. Murray, who had been trying to help a garage survivor wrap a sprained wrist, looked over.
"Why did I feel accused?"
"Because your soul carries forms." Murray took the shutoff bar with offended dignity.
"I am excellent with bars."
"That sentence does not help you." The Spill Saint came together around him: caution signs folding into yellow wings, fire blanket becoming a cape, oil pans locking into a basin, sand pouring itself into glowing seams. Murray stood in the middle holding the shutoff bar like a knight who had been promoted from complaints. Temporary role assigned: Spill Saint Bearer Bearer: Murray Kline Trait compatibility: Reluctantly appropriate"Reluctantly?" Murray said.
"Focus," Mateo said. The Pump Jackal leapt. Murray planted the bar. The Spill Saint flared. Fuel in the air slammed downward into the basin instead of misting across the yard. The Jackal hit the containment field and skidded sideways, hoses whipping, price display flickering through curses in decimals. Gloria and Niko struck together. Gloria drove both wrenches into the Jackal's side panel and twisted. Niko smashed the Jaw Shield into its legs. Rosa pulled her spear free and severed one hose. Mrs.
Vance clipped the grounding cable to the shutoff panel.
"Darren," she said, "tiny lightning."
"That is what I have been training for."
"Tiny." Darren sent one thin bolt through the cable. The shutoff panel sparked blue, then green. Underground valves slammed closed one after another with heavy metallic thunks. The Pump Jackal screamed through its receipt printer. Tank connection severed. Pump Jackal weakened. Route ignition risk reduced from catastrophic to merely humiliating.
"Merely humiliating is my comfort zone," Rosa said. Mateo called Unit Seven. He did not use the radio. He did not shout. He reached through Route Memory, through every street he had driven and every barrel he had lifted and every piece of salvage that had answered his hook. Unit Seven growled. The Mobile Salvage Platform rolled forward on its ugly Route Patch Tire, Garage Wedge scraping sparks that died harmlessly under the Spill Saint's glow. The Route Siren barked. The Pump Jackal tried to run.
Mateo lifted the Token Hook. Scrap Pull caught the broken pump frame. Compactor Bite finished the argument. The Pump Jackal folded into Unit Seven's rear jaws with a crunch, a hiss, and one final printed receipt that fluttered to the concrete. Rosa picked it up.
"It says we saved thirty cents with rewards membership." Mateo leaned against the truck and laughed until his knees got careful. Node Guardian defeated: Pump Jackal Level 6 Experience gained: 94 Recovered: Fuel Heart, Hose Lash x4, Receipt Teeth x6, Pump Core x1 Municipal Garage Node stabilized to 84% A second window unfolded before the whole yard.
MUNICIPAL GARAGE NODE CLAIM AVAILABLE Benefits: Fuel Access, Vehicle Parts Cache, Radio Hub, Repair Bay, Route Maintenance Required custodian: one resident with maintenance authority, stubbornness, and willingness to argue with asphalt. Every eye turned to Gloria. Gloria looked at the window. Then at Mateo. Then at Pickles. Pickles sat.
"Traitor," Gloria told the dog. Pickles sneezed. Gloria stepped forward and touched the claim window with one wrench. Custodian assigned: Gloria Baines Node claimed: Municipal Garage, Level 1 Route Seven network updated. Fuel rationing interface unlocked. Vehicle modification bay unlocked. City Channel Uplink restored. The garage lights shifted from red to blue-white. The bay doors shuddered open fully. Somewhere inside, a coffee maker made one brave, terrible beep. Gloria's face changed at the sound.
"That machine died last winter," she said.
"Node benefit?" Mateo asked.
"No. That is a miracle." The radio hub sparked alive on the wall. Voices burst through at once.
"This is Northside Library, we have children and elderly in the basement."
"Juniper High gym requesting medical help."
"Anyone near County Road Nine, do not answer the tollbooth."
"Food court to Unit Seven, Valerie says if you found fuel, do not become weird about ownership." Rosa grabbed the handset.
"Too late." Mateo stared at the radio as more voices layered over each other. The blue dome was full of people. Not just threats. People, nodes, routes, needs, mistakes, and bad decisions waiting to be collected before monsters found them first. A new system prompt opened. ROUTE NETWORK QUEST UNLOCKED: CIVIC PICKUP Objective: choose next rescue route. Options detected: Northside Library, Juniper High Gym, County Road Nine Tollbooth, Riverside Clinic Warning: choosing one route leaves the others waiting.
Rosa read the last line and went quiet. Mateo wished the system had stayed sarcastic. Silence would have been easier than choice.
