Chương 57: The Door They Could Not Find

The abandoned mall had too many doors. That had been annoying before the tutorial. After the tutorial, it became local character. Crown Mall possessed front doors, side doors, loading doors, fire exits, maintenance doors, employee entrances, a movie theater door that stuck in wet weather, three doors that opened only if lifted while pulled, and one door behind the old pet store that everyone agreed should remain emotionally unexamined. Null Harbor wanted one of them to matter more than the rest.
Administrative Main Entrance designation pending. Purpose: establish lawful access point for receivership contact. Instruction: identify primary entrance.
"The front," Murray said automatically, then closed his eyes.
"I withdraw that instinct."
"Good," Rosa said.
"The front according to who?" The system did not answer. It did something worse. Yellow light crawled across the mall facade, touching each door in turn. The old department store doors glowed first, then the cinema, then the clinic-side maintenance entrance, then the loading bay Hot Plate used for soup. Every time the light passed a door, a little floating tag appeared above it. Candidate entrance.
"It is shopping," Darren said.
"For a surrender point," Maribel said. Mateo watched the tags multiply. At first they seemed harmless. Then he saw how people shifted. The clinic team moved away from the maintenance door as if standing near it might nominate it. Hot Plate paused at the loading bay. Althea looked toward the front entrance and then toward her bus route, calculating which one the convoy would prefer. A main entrance sounded normal. Normal was dangerous because normal made people helpful before they remembered to ask why.
Sort the Pile opened. Threat profile: primary entrance designation Primary weapon: forces one access point to represent the whole site Secondary weapon: turns activity near selected entrance into acceptance of contact terms Known weakness: public service sites may use multiple purpose-specific entrances under active records Available counters: door map, purpose labels, no-primary notice, rotating witnesses, closed-for-use doors, anti-grand-opening sentiment"Anti-grand-opening sentiment," Niko read. Mrs.
Vance raised her hand.
"I can provide that." The first mistake would have been choosing the least important door. Murray proposed it and then argued against himself so fiercely that nobody else had to. If they picked a useless entrance, Null Harbor could say Juniper had hidden public service behind an artificial front. If they picked the real busiest entrance, Null Harbor could control the flow. If they refused to identify anything, obstruction.
"Then every door gets a job," Rosa said. The mall became a door census. Horace drew a map with the kind of seriousness usually reserved for treaties and baked goods. Niko photographed every entrance. Lenora tagged the clinic-side maintenance door: medical supplies only. Althea tagged the south curb door: shelter bus loading only. Hot Plate tagged the loading bay: food movement only, no administrative entry, no touching the soup unless invited. Mrs.
Vance tagged the front doors: public notice and witness table, not consent. Darren found the stuck movie theater door and labeled it: emergency exit, opens with shoulder, hates everyone.
"That is not professional," Murray said.
"Neither is the door." The pet store door received a tag that simply said: closed, no public function, do not make this weird. The yellow entrance tags flickered as the blue purpose tags went up. Then Null Harbor selected the front entrance anyway. Primary entrance designated: former main mall doors. You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. Contact team may approach. Local staff must receive administrative notice. From the mist, three small drones lifted above the county road.
They carried a thin yellow banner between them. The banner was blank until it reached the mall entrance, where black letters burned into place. RECEIVERSHIP CONTACT POINT The letters tried very hard to be readable. They became a little uglier when everyone stared. Mrs. Vance walked to the front doors with a roll of blue tape.
"What are you doing?" Mateo asked.
"Being available for public notice." She taped a folding table to the pavement by placing the tape around its legs in a square. Then she put the Weather Record Bucket on top of it, along with the bell clapper, the Key Registry, and a handwritten sign. PUBLIC NOTICE TABLE This table receives notices. This table does not receive authority.
"I thought we were avoiding readable signs," Niko said.
"This one is for people," Mrs. Vance said. The drones lowered the banner toward the table. Contact point acknowledged.
"No," Horace said, with the exhausted confidence of a man who had spent several days becoming allergic to bad implications.
"Notice table acknowledged. Contact point not acknowledged." He wrote it in the ledger. Mateo stamped the line. Blue light crossed the front doors and split into every other tagged entrance around the mall. The light did not make them equal. It made them honest. Each door glowed only where its purpose allowed. Null Harbor did not like honest doors. The yellow light gathered above the cinema entrance and reshaped its tag. Employee entrance detected. Staff access may represent site management.
Designate responsible manager. Every person near Roberta's old pretzel stand turned toward Murray, which was unfair because Murray had never managed anything except arguments and one fern that had died under suspiciously legal circumstances.
"No," he said.
"Absolutely not."
"You do own a blazer," Darren said.
"That is not management authority." Rosa crossed her arms.
"It is asking for a single responsible manager because managers can sign things." Maribel nodded.
"And if nobody accepts, it says the site lacks responsible control." The employee entrance clicked. Inside, beyond the old cinema hallway, a yellow line appeared on the floor like a welcome mat made of bad intentions. Mrs. Alvarez stepped between the line and the lot.
"Juniper does not have one manager."
"We have teams," Lenora said.
"And witnesses," Horace added.
"And Darren," Niko said.
"I am not sure where that falls," Darren said. Rosa took a blank tag and wrote: staff door for assigned task teams only; no single manager; responsibility recorded by function. Mateo stamped it, and the yellow welcome mat shriveled into three thin lines that pointed toward the food table, clinic table, and bus route instead of one signature box. Single-manager designation contested. Function responsibility record strengthened.
Potential assembly: Many Small Doors Materials: door map, purpose tags, public notice table, Key Registry, witness photos, no-primary record, active service routes Effect: prevents one entrance from representing total site consent; access must match door purpose Cost: 4 Focus Risk: unlabeled door may become implied entrance That last line started a stampede. Not away. Toward doors. People remembered doors nobody had written down. A roof hatch above the cinema. The back stairwell behind the old shoe store.
A roll-up delivery door blocked by three dead refrigerators. The little employee door behind the former pretzel shop, which still smelled faintly of salt and regret. Every unlabeled door was suddenly a hole in Juniper's argument. For fifteen frantic minutes, the town became a door-hunting operation. Mateo tagged until his hand cramped. Horace numbered. Niko photographed. Darren crawled halfway behind the dead refrigerators and announced that if anyone needed him, he had discovered a new form of dust.
The strangest find came from Maya, who noticed that the old photo booth beside the cinema had a narrow service panel behind its curtain.
"Does this count as a door?" she asked. Murray opened his mouth, then looked at the yellow tags still crawling around the mall facade and thought better of being reasonable.
"Today, yes." They tagged it: equipment service panel, no person entry, no authority entry, contains probably haunted gum wrappers. Niko took a picture through the curtain.
"There are definitely gum wrappers."
"Then the record is precise," Horace said. That tiny panel mattered more than it had any right to. The moment Mateo stamped it, a yellow thread that had been sneaking along the wall snapped like cheap string. Null Harbor had been looking for any unclaimed opening, even one too small for a person, because systems that wanted total access did not care whether the door made sense. They cared whether it was unnamed. At the end, the map looked ridiculous. It also looked complete. Mateo stamped the map.
"Many Small Doors. Juniper has no magic door where authority walks in and becomes owner. Each door opens for its own use, by its own key, with its own witnesses. A notice may be received. A town is not." Many Small Doors established. Primary entrance designation contested. Receivership contact point reduced to public notice table. Unlabeled entrance risk reduced. The yellow banner sagged. The drones tried to pull it straight. One of them lost altitude and clipped the edge of the public notice table. Mrs.
Vance caught the banner in one hand.
"Do you accept receipt?" Murray asked sharply. Mrs. Vance took in the banner for a beat. Then she dropped it into the Weather Record Bucket.
"I accept litter." The system considered that. Unauthorized notice disposal recorded. Litter classification disputed.
"Dispute away," Darren said.
"Bucket has jurisdiction." The mist beyond the road thinned. For the first time, they could see shapes behind the red lights. Trucks. Vans. A long vehicle with a raised command box on its back. Smaller machines crawling beside it like equipment carts. Direct Action Convoy arrival: 1 day, 6 hours, 44 minutes. Alternate entry theory weakened. Route control escalation likely. Althea looked at the road.
"If they cannot own the key or the door, they will try to own the street." Unit Seven's engine rumbled from the outer loop. Darren folded his arms.
"Then we make the street do paperwork."
