The municipal garage had never been pretty, which meant the apocalypse had less to improve. It sat at the edge of Juniper's service district behind a chain-link fence, three long bays of concrete block, roll-up doors, salt piles, plow blades, fuel pumps, and the kind of potholes that had survived five budgets by developing political connections. A sign over the main entrance read CITY OF JUNIPER PUBLIC WORKS MOTOR POOL. Someone had taped a note under it years ago that said IF YOU HIT IT, FILL OUT FORM 17-B.
The note was still there. The forklift wearing half a sedan as a necklace was also there. Unit Seven rolled to a stop behind a jackknifed street sweeper. Mateo killed the horn before Rosa could do it with violence.
"That is not a forklift," Darren said from the rear step. The thing in Bay Two turned toward them. It had started life as a forklift, but the Tutorial had upgraded it with bad instincts. Its mast had grown two extra rails. Its forks dragged sparks across the concrete. Its counterweight was plated in crumpled car doors. A rotating amber beacon spun above the driver's cage, flashing over the sedan crushed around its middle like armor.
Enemy detected: Fork Maw Level 5 Behavior: lift / impale / relocate survivors to worse positions Weakness: overextension, brake line rupture, emotional attachment to pallets"Emotional attachment to pallets," Rosa read.
"Mateo, this is your fault somehow."
"I respect pallets professionally."
"That is worse than liking them." The radio crackled.
"Unit Seven, this is Unit Twelve. We are in the parts office behind Bay Three. Six injured, fourteen ambulatory, one dog who has appointed herself safety inspector. The big forklift has the fuel pumps blocked." Rosa grabbed the handset.
"Gloria, this is Rosa. How many moving machines?"
"Fork Maw, two Tire Spiders, one salt spreader that thinks it is artillery, and the lift in Bay One keeps lowering whenever someone breathes too loud."
"Copy. Stay locked down."
"I would love to, except the door hinges are filing for divorce." Mateo opened Sort the Pile. The garage unfolded in labels.
STRUCTURAL: plow blades, garage doors, wheel rims, lift arms, shelving, steel carts VEHICLE: Unit Twelve, dump truck, street sweeper, bucket truck, fuel tanker, police impound bicycle ELECTRICAL: radio hub, battery rack, charger wall, beacon lights, vending machine that owes everyone money FUEL: diesel pumps, gas pump, propane cage, oily rags, absolutely do not improvise near this HAZARD: Fork Maw, Tire Spiders x2, Salt Spreader Wretch, hydraulic lift trap, Murray-level paperwork"The system knows Murray now," Rosa said.
"Do not tell him." Niko dropped from Unit Seven with the Jaw Shield. Mrs. Vance climbed down more slowly, carrying copper wire and the expression of a woman who had already decided three machines deserved a lecture. Darren lifted both hands and made a little spark dance between his fingers.
"I am prepared to provide controlled lightning," he said.
"You are prepared to stand where Edith points," Rosa said. Mrs. Vance nodded.
"Good boy." Darren's shoulders sank.
"I hate that encouragement works on me." Mateo checked Unit Seven's windshield prompt. Mobile Salvage Platform options available: 1. Compactor Bite - ready 2. Scrap Pull - radius limited 3. Route Anchor - unstable in contested garage 4. Proposed assembly: Garage Wedge Garage Wedge sounded like either a tool or the saddest sandwich in city employment. He selected it. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
Garage Wedge Required: plow blade, wheel rims x2, street sweeper brush, Rebar Spine x1 Effect: force open machine lane / disrupt heavy construct charge Cost: 4 Focus"Need a plow blade," Mateo said.
"Which one?" Rosa asked. Fork Maw answered by charging. It came out of Bay Two with the forklift's ugly confidence, forks low, sedan armor shrieking against the bay frame. A Tire Spider skittered ahead of it: eight wheels welded around a hub, valve stems snapping like teeth. Niko met the Tire Spider with the Jaw Shield and went skidding backward six feet.
"I found dislike!" he shouted. Rosa threw her No Parking spear through the spider's center hub. The thing kept rolling anyway, spear stuck in it like a ridiculous axle. Darren fired a bolt at it. Mrs. Vance slapped the back of his head before the lightning left his hand.
"Grounded path first!"
"Right! Professional boundaries!" Mateo drove Unit Seven forward. Fork Maw lowered its forks toward the truck. The compactor prompt flashed. Compactor Bite ready. Target mass high. Warning: may cause municipal grudge.
"Bite it," Rosa said.
"That is not an official command."
"It is now." Mateo hit the control. Unit Seven's rear jaws opened and slammed onto Fork Maw's left fork. Metal screamed. The forklift bucked. The compactor did not crush the whole thing, but it bent the fork sideways and held long enough for Niko to drive the Jaw Shield into the mast.
"Plow blade!" Mateo yelled. Two garage survivors shoved a yellow snowplow blade from behind a salt stack. One of them was a woman with gray hair chopped short, an orange safety vest, and a wrench in each hand. Gloria Baines looked exactly like someone who ate supervisors for breakfast and asked for hot sauce.
"Ruiz!" she shouted.
"Catch!"
"That is not catchable!" She shoved harder anyway. The plow blade scraped across the concrete. Mateo hooked it with Scrap Pull, claimed wheel rims from a rack, ripped bristles from the street sweeper, and fed a Rebar Spine into the shape forming in his mind. Blue light welded ugly things into one useful ugly thing. Assembly complete: Garage Wedge, Grade D Effect: heavy shove, charge breaker, terrible for floors Unit Seven slammed the Garage Wedge under Fork Maw as the forklift tried to reverse.
The wedge lifted the front wheels. Fork Maw's mast overextended. Mrs. Vance shouted, "Now, Darren!" Darren put both hands against the grounded copper line and fired. Lightning ran through the wet concrete, up the bent fork, and into the mast. Fork Maw froze with its beacon spinning faster and faster. Rosa yanked her spear free from the Tire Spider and hurled it into the forklift's exposed brake line. Fork Maw dropped the sedan armor. Niko crushed the control cage.
Enemy defeated: Fork Maw Level 5 Recovered: Fork Arm x2, Hydraulic Jaw x1, Amber Beacon x1, Pallet Hunger Residue x3 Experience gained: 62"Pallet Hunger Residue," Mateo said. Gloria pointed a wrench at him.
"Do not bring that into my office."
"It is technically your garage."
"Then I am evicting it." The Salt Spreader Wretch fired from the far bay. A blast of rock salt punched through the street sweeper windshield and sprayed the yard. Everyone ducked. The second Tire Spider climbed the wall and dropped toward the parts office door. Inside, the dog barked once. The parts office door burst open. A medium-sized black-and-white dog wearing a torn safety harness launched herself at the Tire Spider with the fearless stupidity of all good dogs and several elected officials. Gloria swore.
Mateo's system window updated. Resident detected: Pickles Class: Safety Inspector Trait: Barks at Violations Pickles barked. The Tire Spider stopped dead, all eight wheels locking as if the sound had become a citation. Rosa stared.
"The dog has crowd control."
"The dog has authority," Gloria snapped. Mateo claimed the frozen Tire Spider, the broken street sweeper, and the Amber Beacon from Fork Maw. A blueprint unfolded with the calm cruelty of a city meeting. BLUEPRINT AVAILABLE: ROUTE SIREN Required: Amber Beacon, radio hub wire, speaker cone, Safety Violation bark sample Effect: mark linked route hazards, briefly stun constructs violating route rules Cost: 6 Focus Warning: may encourage dog.
"Pickles," Mateo said, "would you like to become infrastructure?" Pickles barked again. Rosa closed her eyes.
"That was consent in dog." The Salt Spreader Wretch fired a second blast. Mateo built fast. Beacon, wire, speaker cone from the street sweeper, one clean audio slice of Pickles announcing legal disappointment. The Route Siren snapped onto Unit Seven's roof beside the terrible horn. The siren spun amber-blue and barked. Every moving machine in the yard hesitated. Niko charged the Salt Spreader Wretch. Gloria joined him with both wrenches. Rosa recovered her spear. Mrs. Vance and Darren grounded the fuel pumps.
Mateo drove Unit Seven straight down the machine lane, Garage Wedge throwing sparks under the front bumper. The Salt Spreader Wretch tried to fire again. The Route Siren barked. Its spreader jammed. Unit Seven hit it with the wedge, then bit it with the compactor. Enemy defeated: Salt Spreader Wretch Level 4 Municipal Garage conflict reduced. Route Claim stability: 62% The yard went quiet except for dripping oil, panting survivors, and Pickles growling at a tire that was no longer doing anything wrong.
Gloria limped over to Unit Seven's cab.
"Ruiz," she said, "your truck looks stupid."
"It saved your garage."
"I did not say useless." A blue window unfolded over the fuel pumps. MUNICIPAL GARAGE NODE CONTESTED BUT CLAIMABLE Remaining issue: fuel pump breach, radio hub corruption, lift trap Reward on claim: Fuel Access, Vehicle Parts Cache, City Channel Uplink Optional objective: assign Garage Custodian. Gloria read the last line and pointed both wrenches at the system.
"If it thinks I am taking a promotion during the apocalypse, it better include overtime." Mateo looked at the fuel pumps, where the concrete was beginning to bulge. Something under the tanks knocked back. Once. Twice. Then the garage lights went red.
