The last thing Alex Chen remembered was the vending machine. Not in a poetic, "my life flashed before my eyes" way. More in a "I was leaning in to grab my third energy drink of the night and then everything went sideways" way. Specifically, the vending machine went sideways. Three hundred pounds of snack-dispensing metal, right on the back of the skull. But honestly? Alex's heart had already been doing weird things. Two Monsters and a Bawls will do that. The vending machine just finished the job.
One moment: pulling an all-nighter in the library basement, trying to finish a graphic design project on zero sleep and negative nutritional value. Next moment: the universe decided that a Diet Coke and a bag of pretzels would be the last things Alex ever craved. Thud. Darkness. Then— Pressure. Not the gentle pressure of a blanket. Not even the crushing pressure of deep water. This was the pressure of existence.
Like someone had stuffed Alex's consciousness into a cardboard box and then put that box inside a smaller box and then put that box inside a— SLAM. Something hit Alex. Not metaphorically. Physically. Something small and angry kicked Alex's... body? Alex tried to raise an arm. Nothing happened. Tried to open eyes. Nothing. Tried to scream. A creaking sound came out instead. Creaaaaaaaaak. Like old wood. Like a rusty hinge. What the—"Shut up," grumbled a voice. High-pitched. Annoying.
"Stupid chest. Always creaking." Chest? Alex tried to process this. Failed. Tried again. Information flooded in like a bad download. Not memories. Data. Raw, cold, system-log data.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Welcome, Transmigrated Soul #4, 729. You have died in your original dimension. You have been reincarnated as: LESSER MIMIC (Level 1). Current Location: Grimfang Dungeon, Floor 3, Side Chamber. Objective: Survive.
Mimic? Alex's brain—or whatever passed for a brain now—scrambled. Like... the monster? The chest that eats people? I'm a CHEST? Alex tried to look down. A wooden floorboard greeted... something. Not eyes. Some kind of internal perception. Alex could see without eyes. Could feel without skin. Could smell without a nose. And what Alex smelled was gross. Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings. Damp stone. Old blood.
And in the corner, a skeleton in rusted chainmail, still wearing a hopeful grin. A small name tag on the ribcage read: "Gerald." Hi, Gerald, Alex thought numbly. Then the smell of unwashed goblin overwhelmed everything else. Goblin. The small creature that had kicked Alex was now standing directly in front. Alex's internal vision painted a crude picture: green skin, pointy ears, yellow teeth, wearing a dirty loincloth. In one hand, it held a rock. In the other, nothing. It was staring at Alex. No.
It was staring into Alex. Because Alex's lid was already open. The goblin had pried it open while Alex was still groggy from reincarnation. The rusty hinge creaked. But here was the thing about mimic anatomy that Alex was only now discovering: There was a second lid. A false bottom. Made of flesh-colored wood that looked exactly like the floor of a normal chest. It sat about three inches below the rim, hiding everything underneath. The teeth. The tongue. The hungry, hungry void.
Grib—the goblin's name is Grib, apparently—shoved his grubby hand inside. His fingers scraped against that false bottom. Felt like wood. Felt harmless.
"The chest is empty," Grib whined.
"No gold. No potions. Just... wood. Boring wood." Keep scraping, Alex thought desperately. Don't push harder. Don't break through. Grib's fingers brushed against something else. A small, round object resting on top of the false bottom. A rusty coin.
"Ooooh," Grib cooed.
"Maybe not empty. Maybe—" THUMP. A vibration. Alex's tremorsense—new, twitchy, mana-hungry—detected footsteps within 5 feet. Heavy. Measured. Not goblin. (-1 Mana)"Mimic?" a new voice asked. Deeper. Crueler.
"Grib? You find mimic?" Grib whipped around.
"No no no! No mimic, Chief! Just old chest! Empty chest!"
"Then why you reach inside?"
"Checking! Just checking!" A long pause. Alex stayed absolutely still. Camouflage only works when the lid is closed, a little instinct whispered. But the false bottom is still sealed. Maybe they won't see— The heavy footsteps came closer. Alex's internal vision painted the newcomer: taller than the goblin. Broader. Green skin with a hint of gray. A hobgoblin. Wearing scraps of leather armor and carrying a rusted but very sharp-looking sword. Chief Grumble, apparently. He leaned down. Peered into Alex's open lid.
His yellow eyes scanned the interior. The false bottom stared back. Perfectly wooden. Perfectly boring. For a moment, Chief Grumble seemed satisfied. Then Alex's concentration slipped. Just a crack. Just a fraction of an inch. The false bottom twitched. And behind it, a row of yellowed teeth became visible. Chief Grumble's eyes narrowed.
"Grib," he said slowly.
"Move your hand." Grib blinked.
"But Chief—""Move it." Grib yanked his hand out. The rusty coin clattered against the false bottom. Chief Grumble squatted down lower. He reached out with one thick green finger and tapped the false bottom. It didn't sound like wood anymore. It sounded like flesh.
"Mimic," he said. Grib tilted his head.
"What? No. I felt wood. It's wood." Chief Grumble looked at him. Then back at the chest. Then he grabbed the edge of the false bottom and lifted. The teeth were no longer hidden. The purple tongue was no longer hidden. The hungry, drooling maw of a Lesser Mimic was fully exposed.
"Oh," Grib whispered.
"Oh," Chief Grumble agreed. Both of them stared at Alex. Alex stared back. Well, Alex thought. I'm dead. Grib's hand—the one that had been inside Alex moments ago—began to tremble.
"Chief? Is that... is that a—""Mimic," Chief Grumble said. He didn't sound scared. He sounded annoyed.
"Stupid mimic. Wasting my time. No treasure. Just teeth." He stood up. Drew his rusted sword.
"Kill it." Grib hesitated.
"But Chief, mimics are—""Wood for fire. Teeth for necklace. Do it." Grib picked up his rock. Alex's false bottom was gone. Alex's teeth were fully visible. Alex's tongue was wet and sticky and completely useless against a rock to the face. But Alex also had instincts. Deep, monster-brain instincts that had been dormant for exactly three minutes.
Current Stats: · HP: 15/15 · Mana: 9/10 (1 used for tremorsense) · Stamina: 20/20 · Inventory: Rusty Coin (1, on false bottom), Old Bone (1), Spider Web (1) · Status: Terrified, Hungry, Confused What do you do? A) BITE DOWN HARD Grib is right there. His hand just left your mouth, but his arm is still in range. Lunge forward. Bite his wrist. Don't let go. (Cost: 2 Stamina. Damage: 2-6.) Make the hobgoblin work for his firewood. B) SLAM THE LID SHUT Close the main lid.
The false bottom is broken—it won't hide you anymore. But maybe, if you stay perfectly still, False Appearance might still work on the outside. Maybe they'll think they imagined the teeth. Long shot. (Cost: 0. Requires no movement after closing.) C) COUGH UP THE RUSTY COIN The coin is sitting right there on your exposed false bottom. Spit it out. Roll it toward Grib. Distract them. Buy time. Maybe they'll fight over it. (Cost: Lose Rusty Coin. Potential chaos.) D) USE YOUR TONGUE Your tongue is sticky.
Your tongue is long. Lash out. Grab Grib's ankle. Yank him off balance. He'll fall into the hobgoblin. Chaos. Then run. You don't know how to run. But you'll figure it out. (Cost: 2 Stamina. Grapple attempt.) VOTING CLOSES IN 24 HOURS. Reply with A, B, C, or D. Most votes wins.
