Chương 70: The Cost of Memory

Recap: You entered Floor 8 (The Nexus). The Librarian offered a Key to Floor 9 in exchange for a "Sacrifice of Memory." You voted to ASK FOR CLARIFICATION (NEGOTIATE). Forget, I thought. Forget Earth? Forget being Alex? Or just forget why I want to leave? The difference mattered. If I forgot Earth, I'd be just a mimic. A monster. Safe from Cleaners, but… lost. If I forgot the Dungeon… I'd be useless. If I forgot the Party… I'd be a traitor. I couldn't speak human words. But the Librarian knew what I was.

It floated closer, its faceless head tilting. The party watched, confused.

"What is it saying?" Torin asked. He gripped the hilt of his sword. The Void Armor shimmered on his frame.

"Negotiating," Kara whispered.

"I think… it's asking about the price." I vibrated my lid. A specific rhythm. Buzz… Pause… Buzz-Buzz. (Define… Sacrifice). The Librarian raised a gray hand. The key spun above its palm.

"Memory… of… Origin…" the Librarian projected. Its voice was dry, like turning pages.

"You… are… Not… Of… This… Dust… To… Pass… The… Gate… You… Must… Become… Of… This… Dust…" Become of this dust, I thought. Lose the Earth memory. Become native.

"System… Detects… Anomaly… Via… Soul… Signature…" the Librarian continued. It glanced at the Book on the pedestal. The Book had closed, but I knew it was listening.

"If… Signature… Matches… Dungeon… Native… Cleaners… Ignore…" So it's a camouflage, I realized. Not lobotomy. Just… overwriting the tag.

"But…" the Librarian added.

"Or…" the Librarian hesitated.

"You… Find… The… Backdoor… Floor… 9… Has… Two… Paths… The… Gate… And… The… Vent…" The Vent, I thought. A loophole.

"Vent… is… Dangerous… Traps… Unmapped… No… Key… Needed… But… Survival… Chance… 10%…" 10% vs. Memory Loss. The Librarian lowered the key.

"Choice… Is… Yours… Anomaly… Take… Key… Lose… Past… Take… Vent… Risk… Future…" It floated back. The key remained hovering. The book remained closed. The party waited for my signal. Kara looked at me.

"Box… you're shaking." I'm vibrating, I thought. Because I'm scared. If I took the Key, I'd be safe from Cleaners, but I'd lose the things that made me me (Storage, Mark). If I took the Vent, I'd keep my skills, but we might all die in a trap. If I fought the Librarian… Level 10 System NPC. Probably suicide. I had to choose. And I had to let the party know something without telling them I'm a human soul. Buzz. (Danger). Buzz. (Trap).

"We trust you," Torin said. He put a hand on my lid. The Void Armor hummed.

"You got us through the Void. You get us through this." No pressure, I thought. Current Stats (Level 8 - Voidband Mimic): HP: 29/29 (Full) Mana: 24/24 (Full) Stamina: 34/34 (Full) Inventory: 2 Pebbles, Metal Items (Fused). Mage Staff (Loot). Guardian Hammer (Stored).
