Recap: You ate a Sewer Ghoul and healed to 10/17 HP. Town Guards lowered a chain to retrieve you. You voted to HIDE DEEPER (FLEE). Being hauled up to the surface was a one-way ticket to "Appraiser's Table" or "Firewood Pile." I needed depth. I needed darkness. I needed to be where the sun didn't shine and the guards didn't patrol. Move, I commanded my base. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Deactivated: Camouflage Reason: Movement Status: Inactive I engaged my muscles. The sludge resisted.
My new Ironband weight (120 lbs) made me sink, but it also gave me momentum. I pushed off the brick wall. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Stamina Cost: 3 SP (Sewer Navigation) Current SP: 11/22 I slid into the tunnel, away from the light pouring through the grate. The guards above were talking.
"Nothing," one said.
"Just water."
"Lower the hook further." Clank. Clank. The chain dangled into the empty space where I had been seconds ago. It swayed, dripping sewer water. I kept moving. My tremorsense was my eyes now. I felt the vibration of their voices fading above. I felt the flow of the water pulling toward the city outskirts. Left, I thought. The water flows out. Toward the river. Toward the wild. I followed the current. The tunnel widened. The brickwork gave way to rough-hewn stone. This wasn't city maintenance. This was old.
Older than Stonehollow. Smuggler's Tunnel, I realized. Someone dug this. Or something. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. The smell changed. Less sewage. More… ozone. And wet stone. Like the dungeon. I slid for twenty minutes. My stamina ticked down slightly from the exertion. The sludge was getting shallower. The air was getting fresher. Finally, the tunnel ended. Not in a grate. In a drop. I slid to the edge. My tremorsense pinged the drop-off.
Ten feet down. Into a cavern. Vibration Check: Water dripping. Wind. … Chains? I peered over the edge (metaphorically). Below was a natural cavern. But it was occupied. Cages. Rusty iron cages hung from the ceiling. Inside them… shapes. Humanoid. Sleeping? Dead? And in the center of the cavern, a fire. A real fire. Not magical blue fire. Wood and coal. Sitting around the fire were figures. Hooded. Cloaked. They weren't guards. They weren't adventurers. They were… cultists? Smugglers? One of them looked up.
Directly at my ledge.
"Look," a voice echoed.
"The chute opened. Did the shipment arrive?" Another figure stood. They held a staff.
"No box. Just… noise."
"I heard something," the first one said. They started climbing the wall toward me. Handholds were carved into the stone. I was exposed. On a ledge. No cover. 10/17 HP. 11/22 SP. If I fought, I'd alert the whole group. If I ran, I'd fall into the cavern. If I hid… there was nowhere to hide on a flat ledge. Unless… I looked at the cages. They were rusty. Metal. I looked at the drop. I looked at my own Ironband body. I could jump. Fall ten feet. Land on them? Or land near them and fight?
Or I could pretend to be the "shipment."
"Did the shipment arrive?" They were expecting a box. I was a box.
