Recap: You hid in an alcove while rats and goblins killed each other. An adventurer found you. You voted to PLAY "TRAPPED CHEST". Panic is a great motivator. But bluffing? Bluffing is an art form. I slammed my lid shut. Click. The false bottom settled. The blood was hidden. The teeth were hidden. I was just a box again. But a box that was about to throw a tantrum. I needed to sound dangerous. Not "hungry monster" dangerous—that gets you slain. I needed to sound "magical explosion" dangerous.
That gets you left alone. I contracted my base muscles. I shook my lid. I clicked my hinges. I made the low, resonant humming sound that my throat cavity produced when I pushed air through it without opening up. Vrrrrrrrr-click-clack. It sounded like a gear mechanism winding up. It sounded like a glyph charging mana. The adventurer froze. His foot was inches from my base.
"Whoa," he said. He pulled his hand back.
"Okay. Not normal." He leaned in, squinting. He didn't draw a weapon. He reached into his pouch and pulled out… a small mirror? Reflective surface, I thought. Is he checking for traps?
"Hey, Jax!" he yelled back down the corridor.
"Found something! Alcove three! It's… humming!" Oh no. Backup. I kept vibrating. Vrrrrrrrr. I added a little spit bubble noise for effect. Gurgle. The adventurer, Jax's partner, grinned.
"Sounds like a mana trap. Maybe an explosive rune?" He looked at me with pure greed.
"Imagine the loot inside if someone bothered to ward a chest like this." Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site. He reached for his belt. He pulled out a thin metal rod. A disarming tool.
"You stand back, Kael," he said.
"I'll check the resonance." Resonance? He thinks I'm a bomb. This was working too well. But if he touched me with that rod, he'd feel the wood grain. He'd feel the warmth of my digestion. He'd know I was organic. I needed to escalate. I needed to make him think I was about to blow. I stopped the hum. I went silent. Dead silent. Then, I slammed my lid open and shut once. CLACK. Like a trigger being tested. Kael jumped back.
"Did you see that? It moved!"
"Mechanism," the other guy (Jax?) said.
"Sensitive trigger. Don't touch the lid." They were arguing over me. Like I was a puzzle box instead of a living creature trying not to die. But then Kael sighed.
"Look, if it's trapped, we can't carry it. If we disarm it, we might break the loot. Maybe we should just… leave it?"
"No way," Jax said.
"I'm taking it. We'll wrap it in cloth. Drag it to town. Let the guild mages open it." Drag it to town? No. No no no. Town means merchants. Town means appraisers. Town means "Why is this chest warm?" and "Why does this chest have a heartbeat?" I was safe from being eaten, but I was about to be kidnapped. Jax pulled out a rough burlap sack. He was going to bag me. Current Stats: HP: 12/15 (Unchanged) Mana: 5/10 (Unchanged) Stamina: 19/20 (1 SP used for rattling/shaking) Inventory: Spider Web, 3 Pebbles.

[Author Note] Thanks for voting on Chapter 8! Option D (Trapped Chest Bluff) worked… too well. They think you're a magical trap and want to take you to town for analysis. This is a new kind of danger!
