Recap: You ate the Sentinel Leg (3/3 Metal). You have 0 Stamina. Your lid is open. Reinforcements are coming. You voted to USE MANA TO MOVE (SYSTEM EXPLOIT). Stamina was physical. Mana was magical. Mixing them was like putting diesel in a gasoline engine. It might work. It might explode. Given I was about to be dissected by clockwork spiders, explosion seemed like a viable alternative. Come on, System, I thought. I have a Transmigrator's Mark. Give me a cheat code. I focused on my mana pool.
It felt cool, blue, fluid. My stamina felt like dry dust. I tried to push the mana into my hinge muscles. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Warning: Incompatible Resource Conversion Detected: Transmigrator's Mark Override: Allowed (Emergency Protocol) Cost: 2 MP → 1 SP EquivalentSide Effect: System Strain (1 HP Damage) Do it. I pushed. Zzzzt. Pain shot through my lid. Like a brain freeze, but in my hinges. My HP ticked down.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION HP Damage: 1 Current HP: 14/17 MP Cost: 2 Current MP: 8/12 SP Gained: 1 Current SP: 1/22 One stamina point. Just enough. I slammed my lid shut. CLACK. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Activated: Camouflage Condition: Motionless + Lid Closed Status: ACTIVE I became invisible. Not literally, but perceptually. To any observer, I was just a weathered oak chest with rusted iron bands. Nothing more. Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
The vibrations arrived seconds later. Clank. Whir. Hover. Two more Sentinels. These ones were intact. Brass shells gleaming in the dim light. Red lenses scanning the room. They hovered over the broken Sentinel. They buzzed.
"Unit… 734… Destroyed," one chimed.
"Cause… Impact… Crush," the other replied. They scanned the area. Their lenses passed over me. Please, I thought. Just see wood. See varnish. See nothing. My Camouflage skill held. My False Appearance passive whispered to their magical sensors: I am furniture. I am inert. I am boring. They lingered. One hovered closer. Its lens stopped inches from my lid.
"Scan… Complete… No… Life… Signs," it droned.
"Collect… Debris… Retreat," the other said. They grabbed the broken Sentinel parts. Including the spot where I'd bitten the leg off. They didn't notice the missing chunk was inside me. They just scanned for "units." They hovered away. Whirrrrr… The sound faded. I was alone. I let out a breath I didn't have. My HP was low. My MP was drained. My SP was critical. But I was safe. And I had three metal items digesting in my gut.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Evolution Condition Met: Ironband Mimic Requirements: 3 Metal Items (Complete) Level: 2 (Complete)Action: Begin Transformation? Warning: Transformation takes 1 Hour. Immobility Required. Camouflage Must Be Maintained. This was it. The first major milestone. From Lesser Mimic to Ironband Mimic. Thicker bands. Serrated teeth. Slam attack. But I was in a hidden cavity. If another patrol came… I didn't have a choice. I couldn't stay here forever. I needed the upgrade. Begin, I thought.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATIONEvolution Started: Ironband MimicTime Remaining: 59 MinutesStatus: Vulnerable My wood began to itch. The rusted iron bands around my sides started to glow faintly. They weren't rusting anymore. They were… bonding. Ten minutes passed. The glow intensified. Then, my tremorsense (which I'd turned off) pinged automatically. A warning. Thump. Thump. Thump. Not constructs. Not wolves. Boots. Heavy. Human. Adventurers. In a hidden mining cavity. They were close. Very close.
And they weren't humming like the last ones. They were arguing.
"... told you the map was wrong, Elara," a male voice said.
"The mana signature was here, Kaelen," a female voice replied.
"Something evolved. I felt it." Elara? I remembered that name. From before. Elara Vex. Human Rogue. Level 3. She felt my evolution? Current Stats (Level 2 - Evolving): HP: 14/17 (Strain damage) Mana: 8/12 (Exploit cost) Stamina: 1/22 (Critical) Inventory: Rusted Iron Dagger, Warg Collar, Sentinel Leg (All Fusing). Status: EVOLVING (50 Mins Left), Camouflage Active, Detectable by Magic Users. What do you do? A) HALT EVOLUTION Stop the process. Hide the metal items. Pretend to be a normal chest. Hope they leave.
(Cost: 0 SP. Gain: Stealth. Risk: Lose Evolution Progress, Reset Requirements.) B) CONTINUE & HIDE Keep evolving. Rely on Camouflage. Hope your new Defense stat survives if they attack. (Cost: 0 SP. Gain: Ironband Form. Risk: Detection Risk High.) C) AMBUSH PREP Use the last of your stamina to position yourself near the entrance. When they open you, bite immediately. (Cost: 1 SP. Gain: Surprise Attack. Risk: Breaks Camouflage, Interrupts Evolution.) D) COMMUNICATE (CREAK) Make noise. Signal that you're sentient.
Try to negotiate with Elara (She's "not evil" per Bible). (Cost: 0 SP. Charisma Check. Risk: They might still kill you for loot.) VOTING CLOSES IN 24 HOURS. Reply with A, B, C, or D. Most votes wins. [Author Note] Thanks for voting on Chapter 21! Option C (Mana Exploit) was risky but successful! You closed the lid, activated Camouflage, and started your Evolution, but Elara Vex (Human Rogue) has detected the mana surge!
