Recap: You reached Level 5, unlocked Dimensional Storage and Thermal Adaptation. You entered Floor 6 (Crystal Caverns). Crystal Spiders dropped from the ceiling. You voted to TAUNT THE SPIDERS (AGGRO). They were transparent. Blending perfectly with the ice walls. If I didn't have Tremorsense, I'd never have seen them until they were embedded in my wood. Three spiders. Level 5. Legs like needles. Mandibles like diamond drills. Not today, I thought. Today, I'm the shiny object. I focused my mana.
I didn't have a voice box, but I had iron bands. I vibrated them at a specific frequency. A magical hum that screamed I AM THE TARGET. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Used: Taunt Cost: 3 MP Current MP: 10/18 Effect: Aggro Generated (Radius 15 ft) Target: 3 Crystal Spiders The spiders mid-drop shifted. Their trajectory changed. Instead of landing on Renn (the squishy archer), they landed on me. CLINK. CLINK. CLINK. Their legs scratched against my iron bands. Sparks flew. They tried to drill. They tried to inject venom.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Damage Taken: 1 HP (Pierce) Defense Applied: -15 DR Resistance (Thermal Adaptation): -10% (Cold/Crystal) Net Damage: 0 HP (Blocked) Current HP: 16/23 Yes! My Defense stat was doing the heavy lifting. Their needles couldn't penetrate the Ironband evolution. They skidded off my lid like rain on a tin roof.
"Box has them!" Torin yelled. He didn't hesitate. He charged. Kara raised her staff.
"Frost Nova!" A blast of ice erupted from her staff. It hit the spiders on my back. They were already ice-based, so the damage was minimal, but the slow effect was real. Their legs froze to my iron bands. Wait, I thought. They're stuck to me. That was… inconvenient.
"Renn! Aim!" Torin shouted. Twang. Twang. Twang. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. Three arrows. Three hits. The spiders shattered like glass. Shards of crystal fell onto the ice floor. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Assist XP Gained: 15 XP Current XP: 340/450 (Level 5) Loot Detected: Crystal Shards (Material) I shook my base. The frozen legs cracked off. I was fine. Unscratched. Unbroken.
"Unbelievable," Kara whispered. She walked over and picked up a shard.
"Their mandibles… they're harder than steel. And you… you didn't even dent."
"Ironband," Torin said. He was inspecting my lid.
"It's not just wood anymore. It's… alloyed." Evolution, I thought. But sure, let's call it alloy. I opened my lid slightly. I nudged the crystal shards on the floor. Eat?
"Take them," Torin said.
"We need the materials. Kara can enchant them." Fine, I thought. More work for me. I used my tongue to gather the shards. They were sharp. But my stomach acid didn't care. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Item Acquired: Crystal Shards (x3) Type: Magic Material Status: Stored (Dimensional Pocket) Cost: 0 MP (Stackable) Slots Remaining: 4 I didn't need to digest them. I could store them. Efficient. We moved deeper into the cavern. The crystals on the walls grew larger. Some were as big as houses. They hummed with mana.
The air was getting thicker. Harder to breathe (for the humans). SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Warning: Environmental Hazard (Mana Storm) Time Until Arrival: 10 Minutes Effect: Random Magic Surges (Lightning/Fire/Ice) Recommendation: Seek Shelter"Did you feel that?" Kara asked. She looked at the ceiling. The crystals were glowing brighter. Purple arcs of lightning jumped between them.
"Storm's coming," Torin said.
"We need cover. Now."
"There!" Renn pointed. A small cave entrance behind a large crystal formation.
"Looks stable." We slid toward it. But as we approached, the ground shook. The crystal formation… moved. It wasn't a rock. It was a Crystal Golem. Level 6. Sleeping. And we were waking it up.
"WHO… DISTURBS… THE… SLEEP…" The voice resonated through the ice. It wasn't spoken. It was vibrated through the ground. My Tremorsense screamed. The storm was coming. The Golem was awake. The party was tired. I had 10 MP. 28 SP. 16 HP. I had the Hammer in storage. I had the Shards. I had the Taunt. If we fought the Golem, the Storm might hit us. If we hid, the Golem might block the entrance. If I used the Hammer… I needed to get it out. Torin looked at me.
"Box… can you… storage… us?" What? I thought. Store humans?
"No," Kara said.
"It's loot storage. Probably not… living compatible."
"LEAVE…" the Golem boomed. It stood up. Twenty feet of jagged crystal.
