Recap: You became The Gatekeeper, merging Earth access with your Voidband form. The Party is ready. You voted to FORTIFY THE DUNGEON (DEFENSE) instead of visiting Earth immediately. The White Door on my lid glowed softly. The path to Earth was open. The smell of rain and exhaust lingered in my memory from the brief test opening. But Torin was right. The System wasn't gone. It was delayed. Priorities, I thought. Safety first. Tourism second. I closed the portal.
The swirl of city lights faded back into the starry black metal of my Voidband form. The Party looked at me, relieved.
"We stay," Torin said. He understood. He was a warrior. He knew you didn't leave your back exposed before a battle.
"The Sanctum… it's the heart. If we secure this, we secure everything." SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Quest Updated: The Gatekeeper's Defense Objective: Strengthen Floor 1-10 Integrity Reward: Dungeon Defense Bonus, System Surveillance Delay Status: Active I slid toward the Dungeon Core. The golden sphere pulsed, waiting. I placed my base against its light. Core Resonance flared. I didn't ask for power. I asked for control.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Used: Core Link (Fortify) Cost: 10 MP Current MP: 16/26 Effect: Dungeon Trap Efficiency +50% Effect: Monster Loyalty +20% Effect: System Surveillance Masked The Sanctum shook. Not violently. Like a machine waking up. The white walls darkened to a sturdy gray stone. The air grew thick with mana. The connection to the lower floors tightened.
"Feel that?" Kara asked. She held her staff. The crystal glowed brighter.
"The mana flow… it's stable. No more leaks. No more wild spawns."
"Good," Torin said. He walked the perimeter of the Sanctum. The Void Armor hummed.
"Renn, check the corridors. Kara, ward the entrance. Box… you monitor the Core." This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. On it, I thought. I settled next to the Core. I opened my Gatekeeper Vision. I could see the Dungeon not as rooms, but as a network. Green lines of safe mana. Red lines of intrusion. There were red lines. Far above. Floor 0. The Surface. The System was probing.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Warning: System Repairers Detected Location: Floor 0 (Entrance) Count: 3 (Level 25 Elites) ETA: 48 Hours Two days, I thought. Not much time. I projected the image to the party. A hologram of red dots hovering above the dungeon map.
"Three," Torin grimaced.
"Level 25? We're Level 9."
"But we have the terrain," Kara said. She was drawing runes on the floor.
"And we have the traps. Box just buffed them."
"And we have him," Renn said. He pointed at me.
"The Gatekeeper." Don't put all the pressure on me, I thought. But yes. I needed to prepare more. The Fortify skill was good, but we needed offense. We needed to turn the Dungeon itself into a weapon. I had 16 MP. 36 SP. 31 HP. I could upgrade specific floors. I could train the party. I could scout the enemy. The Core whispered.
"…They… Come… To… Prune… Make… Me… Bleed…" Not happening, I thought. Torin sheathed his sword.
"We need a plan. Box… you know the layout best. Where do we make our stand?" Floor 5, I thought. The Furnace. Narrow bridges. Lava. Environmental hazards. Or Floor 10, I thought. The Sanctum. Last stand. I vibrated. Buzz. (Floor 5).
"Choke point," Torin agreed.
"Kara, can you cool the lava? Make it harden?"
"I can try," she said.
"Turn it into obsidian. Sharp. Defensible."
"Renn, high ground. Snipe."
"And Box?" Torin looked at me.
"You're the tank. And the Gate." Buzz. (I'm the Trap). I had 48 hours. I could spend them upgrading the Furnace. Or I could spend them training the party. Or I could try to hack the System signal and delay them further.
