Recap: You started evolving into an Ironband Mimic. Elara Vex detected the mana surge. You voted to HALT EVOLUTION. Abort! Abort! Cancel the subscription! I didn't know if I could stop evolution. The System didn't give me a "Cancel Transformation" button. But I knew one thing: if I finished evolving right now, the mana spike would turn me into a beacon for every magic user in Grimfang. I focused on the fusion process inside my stomach. The metal items were vibrating, merging with my wood. I pushed back.
I imagined a wall. A dam. A "Do Not Disturb" sign. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Warning: Evolution Interrupted Status: SUSPENDED Progress: 10 Minutes / 60 Minutes Metal Items: Retained (Undigested) Penalty: Evolution Timer Resets Upon Resumption Ten minutes, I thought. I wasted ten minutes. But the glow fading from my iron bands was worth it. The hum died down. The magical residue lingered in the air, but I wasn't actively broadcasting anymore. I settled into the dirt. Lid closed. Camouflage active. I was just a chest.
A boring, non-magical, slightly rusty chest. The cavity entrance darkened. Two figures stepped into the room. Elara Vex. I recognized the leather armor and the cocky stride from the Bible description. Beside her was an elf with a bow drawn—Kaelen.
"Here," Elara said. She held a small compass-like device. It was spinning wildly.
"The surge came from this corner." Kaelen scanned the room. His arrow was nocked.
"I don't see anything. Just rocks. And… a chest?" He pointed at me. Elara walked over. She didn't touch me immediately. She circled. Her eyes were sharp, looking for tripwires, glyphs, anything.
"Standard mimic bait," Kaelen muttered.
"Leave it. Probably trapped." The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Maybe," Elara said. She crouched down. She was close. I could smell her perfume. It smelled like… lavender and steel?
"But the mana residue is strongest right here. Like something inside this room evolved. Or… something inside this chest." She tapped my lid. Tap. Tap. My heart hammered against my false bottom. Don't move. Don't breathe. Don't exist.
"False Appearance holds," I prayed.
"It feels… warm," Elara noted. She pulled out a dagger. She scraped the blade against my wood. Scritch. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Damage Taken: 0 HP (Defense 6) Camouflage Status: Holding"Wood's solid," she said.
"No hinges moving. No breathing sounds."
"Shoot it," Kaelen said.
"If it's a mimic, it'll react."
"If I shoot it, I might break the loot inside," Elara countered.
"And if it's just a chest, I wasted an arrow." She stood up. She looked at the broken Sentinel parts on the floor. Then back at me.
"Here's the theory," she said.
"Something evolved here. Maybe a monster. It ate some scrap metal, leveled up, and… left. Or maybe…" She kicked my side.
"Maybe this chest ate the monster." Kaelen lowered his bow slightly.
"You think the chest is the monster?"
"I think it's suspicious," Elara said.
"But we're low on supplies. And this chest looks sturdy. Good storage." She reached into her pack and pulled out a rope.
"We're taking it," she declared.
"Elara, no—""Wrap it up. Tie it tight. If it's a mimic, it can't bite through hemp. If it's normal, we sell it in Stonehollow. Win-win." Kaelen sighed. He holstered his bow. He stepped forward with the rope. They were going to bag me. Again. But this time, they knew something might be wrong. They weren't going to be gentle. I was suspended mid-evolution. My stamina was critical. My HP was low. And I was about to be tied up by a Level 3 Rogue who suspected my secrets.
