Chương 100: The Boy Who Stayed

The first person to call it heroism was All Might. That was the problem. If Aizawa had said it, Ren could have filed the word under tactical bluntness and disliked it later. If Kurose had said it, he could have argued that she was using an educational definition meant to stop him from turning himself into a disciplinary report. If Recovery Girl had said it, he could have assumed it was medical cruelty disguised as praise and accepted it because arguing with her was a poor survival strategy.
But All Might had said it. Not loudly. Not with the force that used to make villains tremble and children stand straighter in front of televisions. He had said it in a secured room, sitting in a chair that did not fit him, with the Symbol of Peace stretched over a tired man's grief.
"You stayed" he had said Ren had said "Yes""You stayed when Young Midoriya was in danger""Yes""You stayed when Young Bakugo was in danger""Yes""You stayed when you were named""Yes" All Might had bowed his head.
"That was heroism" The word had not left. It had followed Ren into the secured recovery suite. It sat beside the bolted kettle, behind the locked tea case, under the ugly laminated photograph of Bentaro wearing Hana's scarf. It watched him eat breakfast. It listened when Hana asked if he had slept. It stood in the corner while Recovery Girl checked his palms and declared them cool with the suspicion of a doctor who knew bodies lied less often than boys but still often enough. Heroism.
Ren hated the word in the room. It sounded too large for the chair. Too bright for the locked shelf. Too clean for Ragdoll's missing name. He opened his chart after breakfast and wrote: All Might called staying heroism. Then he stared at the line for almost two minutes. After that, he wrote: I do not believe him. The sentence looked ugly. Trustworthy. He left it there. The morning should have become another set of medical checks and screened visits, but U. A.
had entered the strange phase after disaster when necessary tasks began wearing normal clothes. Someone had to arrange food. Someone had to schedule guardian briefings. Someone had to tell students which hallways they could walk through. Someone had to decide whether homework would be postponed, cancelled, or transformed into a moral insult by existing. Ren learned from Kurose that several teachers had argued about it.
Present Mic had reportedly said "If anyone says worksheet today, I'm committing administrative violence" Cementoss had suggested reflective journaling and been stared down by three separate faculty members. Aizawa had said "Sleep is homework" Recovery Girl had said "If they fail sleep, I will grade you" Nezu had approved the assignment. Sleep is homework. Ren wrote it down because the phrase sounded like a trap he would fail. Shinso arrived midmorning, empty-handed as usual because the world still hated pockets.
He paused at the shelf and looked at Bentaro's laminated portrait.
"Still awful""Yes""Good" Ren looked at him. Shinso raised both hands.
"Sorry. Trustworthy awful""That is worse""Your umbrella has rank. It can handle criticism" Shinso sat in the removable chair and immediately slouched in it, proving it had more freedom than the rest of the furniture. His eyes moved to the chart. Ren did not close it in time. Shinso read the two lines. All Might called staying heroism. I do not believe him. He did not make a joke. That was how Ren knew the day had become serious. Shinso leaned back.
"Yeah" Ren waited. That seemed to be the entire first response. Then Shinso said "I don't think I'd believe him either" Ren looked up.
"You?"
"If someone said me using Brainwashing on that student was heroic, I'd want to leave through the nearest wall""It stopped him from running outside""Sure""It was authorized""Sure""It helped""Yes" Ren frowned.
"Then why?" Shinso looked at the window that did not open.
"Because it still felt like taking someone's body for a few seconds" The room quieted around that. No protocol sentence arrived to fix it. Good. Shinso tapped one finger against his knee, caught himself, then stopped because repetitive motion made the security camera feel judgmental.
"People keep telling me it was good use. Ethical use. Correct use. Whatever. They're not wrong. I know they're not wrong. But the part of me that hates my Quirk doesn't care that the paperwork was clean" Ren looked at his open hands.
"Knowing is not accepting""Exactly" The words had been used too many times lately, but here they did not sound mechanical. They sounded like a bruise being pressed and recognized. Shinso nodded toward the chart.
"So maybe All Might is right and you don't believe him yet" Ren looked at the line again.
"That sounds too simple""It's not simple. It's annoying. Different category" Ren almost smiled. Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Also, if All Might called me heroic, I'd suspect head trauma. Mine or his""All Might has survived too much head trauma for that to narrow it down" Shinso stared at him. Then he laughed once, rough and surprised.
"Wow" Ren blinked.
"What?"
"That was mean""It was true""Mean can be true""So can good use" Shinso's expression changed. Not wounded. Caught. Then he leaned back and looked at the ceiling.
"Rude""Trustworthy""I created a monster" Ren did smile then. Small, but real. The conversation might have stayed there if the door had not opened and Aizawa had not stepped inside with the expression of a man interrupting emotional development before it became sticky.
"Shinso. Medical review" Shinso stood.
"Am I in trouble?"
"You're upright. Statistically likely" He looked at Ren.
"Good luck with heroism" Ren said "Good luck with good use" Shinso grimaced.
"Terrible" He left. Aizawa remained. Ren closed the chart too late. Aizawa had already seen it. Of course he had. He stood near the bolted desk and did not sit.
"You don't believe him" Ren exhaled.
"No""Expected""That helps less than people think""I know" Aizawa looked at Bentaro's photograph.
"Why is the umbrella wearing a scarf?"
"Rank" Aizawa stared for one long second. Then decided not to enter that battlefield. Smart. He turned back to Ren.
"Walk with me" Ren looked at him.
"Am I cleared?"
"Inside secured corridor. Two staff. No small objects. Ten minutes" Ren stood too quickly. Not dangerously. Enough. Aizawa noticed.
"Do not look that happy. It's a hallway" Ren did not care. It was a hallway. It was more than one room. Kurose joined them outside. The corridor had been cleared in advance, though U. A. pretended that was not obvious. Two security officers stood at either end. The floor had been checked. Windows did not open. Doors were marked. Nothing rolled. Nothing clicked. Nothing glittered. It was a hallway pretending not to be a route. Ren walked between Aizawa and Kurose.
For the first few steps, the act of moving felt so good that he almost hated it. Then Aizawa said "You're not taking this walk because you earned it" Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. Ren's shoulders tightened. Aizawa continued "You're taking it because confinement without controlled movement makes students worse""That was almost gentle""No" Kurose said "It was" Aizawa ignored her. They reached the first turn.
Ren looked down the intersecting corridor and saw a closed medical door, two nurses, a taped line on the floor, a sign reading AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY, and beyond that, somewhere he could not see, Midoriya. His steps slowed. Aizawa stopped with him. Ren said "He is behind that section?"
"Yes" Kurose watched him carefully. Ren did not ask to go. That seemed important. Also awful. Aizawa said "You want to""Yes""You're not going""I know""Good" Ren looked at the taped line.
"It is easier to stay when the danger is abstract""Yes""When he is down the hall, it feels stupid""Yes" Aizawa's agreement came without sympathy, which made it more useful. Ren's hands stayed cool. He looked at them anyway. Aizawa noticed.
"Stop checking for permission from your palms" Ren looked up.
"What?"
"You keep looking at them like if they stay cool long enough, you'll be allowed to feel what you want" The sentence hit cleanly. Kurose said nothing. Ren closed his hands halfway, then opened them again because that too had become habit. Aizawa's eyes followed the movement but he did not comment. Ren said "If they heat, everyone knows I am not fine""Everyone already knows you're not fine""That is different""Yes" Ren hated that too. The hallway hummed softly with building ventilation.
Somewhere far away, someone dropped a clipboard and apologized too loudly. Life continuing with noises that did not know they should be respectful. Aizawa said "You think staying was the absence of action" Ren did not answer. That was answer.
"You were not passive" Aizawa said "You were restrained" Ren looked toward him.
"There is a difference?"
"Yes. Passivity is not acting because you are absent from the decision. Restraint is not acting while the decision tries to tear you open" The corridor seemed to narrow. Ren looked away. Aizawa continued "At camp, leaving your assigned role would have helped your fear. It would have hurt the rescue. You knew that. You stayed" Ren's throat tightened.
"Midoriya left his route and saved Kota""Yes""So sometimes leaving is right""Yes""Then staying is not always heroism""No" Ren looked at him. Aizawa's face was tired and severe.
"That is why yours mattered. It was not automatic. It was chosen under pressure" Kurose finally spoke.
"Do not make it universal. Make it specific" Ren breathed. Specific. Not shrine. Not category. Not proof. Specific. He had stayed in that room because leaving would have split rescue lines, increased targets, pulled staff, and turned fear into motion. Midoriya had left his route because Kota was alone with a hostile and no staff could reach fast enough. Both choices had cost something. Neither erased the other. Ren looked at the taped line again.
"I still hate that he was hurt while I sat" Aizawa said "Good" Ren closed his eyes.
"Everyone keeps saying good to terrible things""Because terrible things can point in useful directions" Kurose added "And because if you stop hating that, we have a larger problem" That was fair. The ten-minute walk ended too soon. Everything did now. Back in the secured suite, the room felt smaller for having briefly been left. Ren expected that. It still angered him. Lunch came. He chose rice and soup because Hana had somehow made soup politically unavoidable. The spoon was still too soft.
He complained about it in a message to his parents. Daichi replied through the approved channel: Soft spoon prevents duels. Accept tactical loss. Hana added: Your father has been banned from cutlery strategy. Ren sent back: Reasonable. Hana replied: Do not side with medical tyranny. Daichi replied: Marriage includes betrayal. Ren laughed into his soup. Kurose, reviewing something near the door, looked up.
"Parent messages?"
"Yes""Good" Ren pointed the spoon at her.
"Careful" She corrected herself with visible effort.
"Trustworthy" The afternoon brought All Might. Not the Symbol, this time. That was the first shock. The second was that he arrived in thin form. Only after the security glass had been dimmed, cameras restricted, Kurose inside, Recovery Girl outside, Nezu having personally cleared the room, and a sign placed at the corridor entrance that said MEDICAL PRIVACY REVIEW, which was technically true in the same way a locked vault was technically a box. Ren stood when Toshinori entered.
The man looked smaller than the last time Ren had seen him like this. Not just thin. Worn. His clothes hung loose. His face carried shadows the Symbol hid under muscle and light. He held nothing. No loose objects. No tea. No gift. Just himself. Ren said "All Might" Toshinori gave him a tired smile.
"Toshinori is safer in this room" Ren nodded.
"Toshinori" The name still felt like handling something fragile. Toshinori sat on the removable chair. It did not look absurd under him in this form. Somehow that made Ren sadder. Kurose stayed near the door. Recovery Girl remained visible through the glass but did not enter. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Toshinori said "I heard you do not believe me" Ren looked at Kurose. She did not look guilty. Traitor. Toshinori smiled faintly.
"Do not blame her. Aizawa said it first" Of course. Ren sat across from him.
"I wrote it""I know""I was not trying to insult you""I know""You might be wrong" Toshinori's smile faded, but not in offense.
"I might be" That answer startled Ren. Toshinori leaned forward, elbows on knees, hands clasped loosely.
"When I called it heroism, I was not trying to give you a medal" Ren looked down.
"That is what it felt like""Yes. I feared so" The honesty softened something and made another part hurt. Toshinori continued "I have spent most of my life moving. Hear danger, move. See threat, move. Hear a cry, move. I built a symbol out of arriving. So when I saw that you stayed, my first instinct was to honor it because I know how hard it would have been for me" Ren listened. No slogan. No shine. Just a man describing the shape of his own damage. Toshinori's voice lowered.
"But my admiration may have placed weight on you. If it did, I am sorry" Ren almost said do not apologize first. The irony stopped him. Instead he said "It did" Toshinori nodded.
"Then let me correct the shape, not the truth" Ren looked up.
"You still think it was heroism""Yes""Why?"
"Because you placed the rescue above the relief of moving" The sentence entered quietly. Ren did not answer. Toshinori let him sit with it. Then said "Young Midoriya placed Kota's life above the safety of his own body. That saved Kota. It also harmed him. You placed the wider rescue structure above the relief of reaching the danger yourself. That helped others hold. It also harmed you" Ren's throat tightened.
"So both are wounds?"
"Sometimes heroism leaves wounds even when it is right" Ren looked toward the shelf. Bentaro looked ridiculous and immune to philosophy. Good for him. Ren said "That is a terrible recruitment slogan" Toshinori laughed. Softly. Then coughed once into his fist, turned away, recovered, and looked embarrassed. Ren pretended not to notice the blood he did not see. Toshinori noticed the pretending and looked grateful.
"I am not asking you to feel proud" he said"Good""I am not asking you to believe the word today""That helps""I am asking you not to replace it with uselessness" Ren looked at him. There it was. The actual wound. Not was it heroic? Was it anything? Ren's voice came out smaller than he wanted.
"I was in a chair" Toshinori's eyes changed.
"Yes""I watched smoke through windows""Yes""I gave calls and then stopped""Yes""I was removed from relay""Yes""Ragdoll was taken" Toshinori did not look away.
"Yes" Ren's hands curled. Not into fists. Almost.
"I cannot make that feel like heroism" Toshinori's voice was quiet.
"Then do not. Make it obedience to the rescue. Make it restraint. Make it the choice that kept you from becoming another person to save. Use whatever word you can carry. Mine can wait outside" Ren closed his eyes. Mine can wait outside. That was the first time the word felt less like a thing placed on him and more like something left at the door. Not accepted. Not rejected. Waiting. Ren opened his eyes.
"I can carry restraint" Toshinori nodded.
"Then carry that" Kurose's face had gone very still near the door. Recovery Girl looked away through the glass. Toshinori stood slowly. Before he left, Ren said "All Might" The name came out instead of Toshinori. The man paused. Ren swallowed.
"You moved for everyone for a long time" Toshinori's face softened with pain.
"Yes""Does staying feel like failing?" The question had not been planned. It came from the taped line outside Midoriya's corridor, from the bolted chair, from the man who had become a symbol by arriving and was now being forced by his own body to stop. Toshinori was silent for a long time. Then he said "Every day" Ren's chest tightened. Toshinori continued "That is why I need people around me who know the difference before I do" His eyes moved toward Recovery Girl. Then Kurose. Then back to Ren.
"You are learning it earlier than I did. I am sorry you have to" Ren nodded.
"Me too" This time, the apology did not feel like debt. Just grief. Toshinori left in thin form. The room stayed dim for five minutes after. Ren sat very still. Kurose did not ask for a report. Eventually he said "His word can wait outside" Kurose nodded.
"Yes""Can mine?"
"What word?"
"Useless" Kurose looked at him. For once, she answered softly.
"Yes. Leave it outside too" Ren looked toward the door. Two words outside. Heroism. Useless. Neither allowed to own the room. That felt like enough work for one afternoon. The evening student overlap was smaller than yesterday's. Only Shinso, Uraraka, Iida, Asui, and Todoroki were allowed into the cleared room with Ren. Bakugo was not present, either because target spacing remained in effect or because someone had decided the room could handle trauma but not Bakugo's personality twice in two days.
Kaminari sent a complaint through Jiro that he had been excluded from an important sitting-around event. Sero drew a tape-based diagram of forbidden marbles that was rejected for being a loose paper. The group sat awkwardly until Asui said "Midoriya woke up again" Uraraka nodded.
"He asked if Kota was still mad" Iida adjusted his glasses with a trembling hand.
"I informed him that Kota's anger appeared stable" Todoroki said "That probably reassured him""It did" Uraraka said "Which says a lot about him" Ren looked at her.
"How are you?" Uraraka blinked, startled by the question.
"Me?"
"Yes" She looked at her hands.
"I keep feeling relieved and then guilty because he's hurt. Then relieved again because he's alive. Then guilty about that too. It's annoying" Asui nodded.
"Grief and relief are bad roommates" Everyone looked at her. She blinked.
"Ribbit" Shinso said "No, keep that. That was good" Uraraka laughed softly. Then wiped her eyes. Iida looked at Ren.
"And you?" Ren considered saying fine just to see if anyone would believe him. No one in that room would.
"Angry" Todoroki nodded immediately.
"At the room?"
"Yes""At staying?" Ren paused.
"Partly" Uraraka leaned forward.
"I'm glad you stayed" The sentence hit harder because it was simple. Ren looked down.
"I know""No" she said, surprising herself.
"I mean, not in a big hero-speech way. I mean when everything was happening, and people were telling us to hold, it helped knowing someone else was holding too. Even if I hated it" Iida's jaw tightened.
"Yes. That is accurate" Asui looked at Ren.
"It made the instruction feel less like abandonment" Ren did not breathe for a moment. Less like abandonment. That was not heroism. That was something he might be able to carry. Shinso watched him from the other side of the room. No joke. No rescue. Just presence. Ren said "I did not know that" Uraraka smiled weakly.
"We didn't exactly have time to send feedback" Todoroki looked at the floor.
"When I wanted to go back out, I remembered you were inside too" Ren looked at him. Todoroki's face remained calm, but his hand moved once over his left wrist.
"I do not know if that helped for the right reason. But it helped" Ren swallowed. The room did not feel smaller. Not then. Iida said "I have been thinking that route discipline sounds simple until the person outside the route has a name" His voice cracked on the last word. Asui placed a hand near his sleeve, not touching until he nodded. He did. She touched lightly. Iida breathed. Shinso said "So the official conclusion is that everyone hated holding and holding still mattered" Uraraka looked at him.
"That sounds right" Asui nodded.
"Ugly but right" Ren thought of All Might's word outside the door. Heroism. Useless. Maybe there was room between them for this. Holding. He could carry holding. Not proudly. Not yet. But carry. The overlap ended with no dramatic declaration. That made it better. At the door, Uraraka turned back.
"When Deku can hear more, I'll tell him you're angry too" Ren blinked.
"Why?"
"Because he'll feel less alone" Then she left. Ren stood there for a second longer than he should have. Kurose, who had been supervising from the door, said "That one got through" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Good?" He looked at her.
"Trustworthy" She smiled faintly.
"Annoying child" Night came with rain against the sealed window. Not a storm. Just rain, soft enough that Ren could hear the building around it. The kettle sat bolted and quiet. Bentaro's photograph wore Hana's scarf with official rank. The shelf was no longer empty. The room was still locked. His phone was still gone. Ragdoll was still missing. Midoriya was still hurt. Bakugo was still targeted. Ren was still classified. But two words had been left outside. Heroism. Useless. He opened his chart.
He wrote: All Might's word can wait outside. Aizawa said restraint is not passivity. Kurose said make it specific. Shinso said good use can still feel bad. Uraraka said my holding made holding feel less like abandonment. Iida said route discipline is simple until the person outside the route has a name. Asui said grief and relief are bad roommates. Accurate. Todoroki said knowing I was inside helped him stay. I can carry holding before I can carry heroism. He paused. Rain moved against the glass.
Then he wrote the line that had been waiting all day. The boy who stayed did not feel brave. He felt the door and did not open it. Ren read it once. Twice. It did not make him proud. It did not make Ragdoll less missing. It did not make Midoriya less hurt. It did not turn the chair into a battlefield or the room into a medal. It was simply true enough to stay. He closed the chart. Before sleep, a message came through the approved channel. From Midoriya. Not typed by him, clearly.
Probably dictated in fragments to Inko, then approved by Recovery Girl, then cut down by medical mercy. It said: Kota is alive. I am alive. You are here. I am trying not to apologize first. It is hard. Ren held the tablet carefully. Cool hands. Open. He recorded a reply.
"Good. It is hard here too" He stopped. Then added "We can be bad at it at the same time" The message was sent. Rain continued. The room with locks listened. Ren lay under the blanket with his hands open and thought of a boy who came back hurt and a boy who stayed behind a door and a staff member still missing beyond every safe wall they had built. He did not feel heroic. But he had not opened the door. For tonight, that line remained.
