Chương 122: The Morning After the Symbol

The morning after Kamino, Japan woke to the last image of All Might. Not the truth. Not the whole truth. An image. He stood in the crater, hero form unbroken before the cameras, one arm damaged, costume torn, blood at his mouth, smile still bright enough for people to remember what breathing was supposed to feel like. He pointed toward the screen. He said the words everyone would replay until they became larger than the ruined street behind him. You are next. Every channel showed it. Every phone carried it.
Every news site froze that frame and built a headline around it. ALL MIGHT DEFEATS ALL FOR ONE SYMBOL OF PEACE TRIUMPHS AT KAMINO ALL FOR ONE CAPTURED AFTER HISTORIC BATTLE The public saw the punch. The public saw the capture. The public saw All Might standing. The public did not see the medical transport.
They did not see the hero form collapse behind blocked camera angles, behind police bodies, behind Tsukauchi's coat and Gran Torino's fury and Recovery Girl's threats crossing three command channels before the ambulance doors closed. They did not see Toshinori Yagi fold inward around the body that had carried the Symbol for too long. They did not see the blood cloth. They did not see the old man who had won the world one last public victory and then needed help sitting up. That ignorance was not a lie. Not exactly.
It was a mercy with paperwork. At U. A., morning came without pretending to be clean. The dormitory system had not yet been officially announced, so students slept wherever staff had placed them after the supervised watch rooms emptied. Some in temporary dorm spaces. Some in medical observation. Some in repurposed classrooms with blankets that smelled like school storage and emergency supplies. Some had not slept at all. In the protected student room, the chairs remained where fear had left them.
One was slightly turned where Bakugo had stood through the final exchange. One had a folded tissue packet beneath it because Mina had dropped it and no one had noticed. The display was dark now. The terrible font was gone. Kurose entered the empty room just after sunrise with a cup of tea in one hand and a tablet in the other. She looked at the chairs for a long time. Students who stay. The phrase did not look heroic in the room. It looked like exhausted furniture.
She hated how often real heroism looked unmarketable. Aizawa appeared in the doorway behind her, eyes redder than they had any right to be after Recovery Girl's drops. Kurose did not turn.
"You should be asleep""So should you""I am drinking tea. That is adjacent to responsibility""That tea is cold""I am emotionally attached to the idea of it" Aizawa walked in and looked at the room. No students. No panic. No unauthorized exits. No additional rescue objectives. He hated that this counted as a victory. He was relieved it counted. Kurose glanced at him.
"Any movement?"
"No""Bakugo?"
"In his assigned room. Awake. Angry at the ceiling""Midoriya?"
"Medically watched. Cried himself into sleep. Woke up twice asking if All Might was still alive""And?"
"I said yes twice" Kurose nodded.
"Shinso?"
"Silent. Stayed where he was told. Looked like he hated everyone for making that necessary""That is developmentally appropriate" Aizawa looked at her.
"You sound like Recovery Girl""That is a personal attack""It was meant as one" Kurose looked back at the chairs.
"The room stayed" Aizawa's mouth tightened.
"Yes""Ren will like that""He is asleep""For now" Aizawa stared at the dark display.
"For now is becoming a cursed phrase" Kurose took a sip of cold tea and grimaced.
"Accurate" In R-2, Ren woke because his body had become terrible at accepting mercy for more than four consecutive hours. The first thing he noticed was his left wrist. Present. Bandaged. Aching. Trustworthy. The second was his right shoulder. Low pain. Too low. He breathed carefully and waited for panic to decide whether it wanted the room. It did not arrive immediately. Good. Suspicious.
The third thing he noticed was Hana asleep in the chair by the bed, one hand folded beneath her cheek and the other still near the blanket as if even sleep refused to stop watching him. Daichi slept in the second chair, chin dipped toward his chest, Bentaro across his knees like an old repaired guardian whose dignity had survived worse humiliations than medical inspection tags. Recovery Girl sat near the monitor, awake, of course, because apparently some people were born with spite instead of circadian rhythm.
Ren turned his head a fraction. Recovery Girl looked at him without looking surprised.
"Map" He swallowed.
"R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. left wrist. right shoulder low. back present. throat dry""Good. Pain absence?"
"Shoulder lower than expected""Spread?"
"No""Panic?"
"Suspicious""That is not a vital sign""It is mine""Unfortunately believable" She checked the monitor. His fever had lowered from the night before, but not enough to satisfy anyone sensible. The grafted functions were not calm. They were quiet in the way unknown machinery could be quiet while still plugged in. Contained. Not integrated. Not stable. Not his. Ren looked toward the dark screen on the desk.
"All Might?" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"Alive""Toshinori?"
"Alive""Awake?"
"Intermittently. Annoying when conscious" Ren exhaled. Hana stirred at the sound. Her eyes opened before her body remembered sleep existed. She leaned forward immediately.
"Ren?"
"Here" Her face crumpled and steadied in the same breath.
"Warm or cold?" He took inventory.
"Warm. Not bad" Recovery Girl snorted.
"His fever is currently trying to sound polite" Daichi woke more slowly, but his hand closed around Bentaro before his eyes fully opened.
"Alive?" Ren looked at him.
"Yes" Daichi breathed out.
"Good. We keep that one" Ren's mouth almost smiled. Recovery Girl adjusted a line on the monitor.
"No sitting up""I did not try""You thought about existing vertically""Unproven""Your eyebrows confessed" Hana brushed hair back from his forehead after he nodded.
"You slept""Badly""But you slept""Yes""Good" The word was soft. Too soft. Ren closed his eyes. For a moment, the room was only morning and breath and the terrible kindness of people still there. Then Daichi's phone vibrated on silent from the sealed side table where approved devices lived under staff supervision. Everyone looked at it. No one reached. Recovery Girl did. She read the notification once. Then her face hardened. Ren knew.
"Public statement?"
"Yes" Hana straightened.
"All Might?"
"U. A. and the Hero Public Safety Commission joint statement" Daichi's hand tightened around Bentaro's handle. Recovery Girl looked at Ren.
"You do not need to watch" Ren opened his eyes.
"I know""That was not agreement""No" Hana's hand remained in his hair.
"Do you want to hear it from us first?" Ren looked at her. Information through people first.
"Yes" You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. Recovery Girl handed the device to Daichi after enlarging the text and disabling everything else with the contempt of someone who trusted no technology near patients. Daichi read silently first. His face changed. Then he read aloud.
"Following the capture of All For One during last night's operation in Kamino Ward, All Might will retire from active field hero work due to injuries sustained over the course of his career and exacerbated during the battle" Ren closed his eyes. The room went very still. Daichi continued, voice lower.
"All Might remains alive, under medical care, and committed to supporting the next generation of heroes through education and public service" Hana's fingers trembled once in Ren's hair. Daichi paused. Recovery Girl did not interrupt. He finished.
"The Symbol of Peace asks the public to support the heroes, officers, medical staff, and students who will carry society forward together" Silence. Ren breathed through it. Active field hero work. Retire. Alive. Education. Next generation. Together. The words were careful. Too careful. Built by adults, lawyers, crisis officers, and maybe one principal who knew exactly where language could become a cage or a bridge. The world had not seen Toshinori fall. That did not mean All Might had not ended.
Ren opened his eyes.
"He agreed?" Recovery Girl answered.
"Yes""Visual?"
"No""Good" Hana looked at her.
"Good?" Recovery Girl's voice was sharp.
"The public got All Might's last standing image. They do not get Toshinori's hospital bed as dessert" Hana's face twisted.
"Yes" Daichi lowered the phone. Ren stared at the ceiling. Last public victory. Not last breath. Not public collapse. Now public ending. His shoulder pain dropped another notch. Too fast. He stiffened. Recovery Girl saw.
"Map""Left wrist. bed. back. throat. shoulder low""Spread?"
"Right ribs. Maybe" Hana's hand stilled. Daichi leaned forward. Recovery Girl adjusted the monitor.
"Pain modulation spike. Local but wider than waking baseline" Ren swallowed.
"I am not using it""I know" The answer was immediate. Important. She did not say he was doing it wrong. She did not say control it. She said she knew. Ren breathed.
"Contained?"
"For now" He hated the phrase. Recovery Girl hated it too. That helped. At the U. A. medical wing, Toshinori Yagi heard his own retirement announced by someone else because Recovery Girl had declared him unfit to talk to microphones, cameras, phones, journalists, administrators with gentle voices, and anyone using the word legacy before noon. He lay in bed with oxygen at his nose, ribs wrapped, old wound aggravated, muscles exhausted beyond the point where exhaustion remained a useful word.
His body had become a list of consequences. Gran Torino sat by the bed with arms crossed and one foot tapping. Tsukauchi stood near the door with a tablet and the expression of a man who had slept for negative hours. Nezu sat on a chair too tall for him and somehow looked more comfortable than anyone else. The official statement played through a low speaker. Toshinori listened without moving. When it ended, no one spoke.
Recovery Girl checked his vitals and gave him the look she reserved for men who survived through insolent mathematics. Toshinori's voice was rough.
"They did not show him" Tsukauchi looked up.
"Him?" Toshinori's eyes remained on the ceiling.
"Toshinori" Gran Torino's foot stopped tapping.
"No" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Good" Recovery Girl adjusted his blanket with more violence than fabric required.
"The public does not own your bones" Toshinori's mouth moved faintly.
"That sounds like something Ren would say""It sounds like something I am saying, which means it has seniority" Nezu's ears lifted.
"Both can be true" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Do not become charming before I have coffee" Nezu folded his paws.
"I would not dare""You would dare professionally" Toshinori's weak breath almost became a laugh. Recovery Girl glared.
"Do not" He stopped. Mostly. Tsukauchi lowered the tablet.
"The statement is holding. Reactions are volatile but not chaotic yet. Relief, fear, confusion. Some outlets are speculating about the extent of your injuries. None have visual confirmation of your smaller form" Toshinori's eyes opened.
"Good" Gran Torino snorted.
"You keep saying that like hiding it fixes anything""It does not fix it""No""But it gives me the right to choose who sees the man" Gran Torino looked away. Tsukauchi's face softened. Nezu said quietly "Choice matters more after someone tries to make exposure into a weapon" Toshinori thought of All For One's voice in the open air. The man under the smile. He thought of Ren in a hospital bed asking if he came back as Toshinori. He thought of Izuku crying on a screen.
He thought of Endeavor watching from the perimeter. He thought of the country waking up to a Symbol retired but not publicly stripped.
"I need to speak with Midoriya" he said Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"No""I need to speak with Ren""No""Eventually""Eventually is a word I will allow because it is not now" Toshinori accepted that. Barely. Nezu looked at him.
"When you speak with them, do not make it a handoff speech" Toshinori's mouth tightened.
"I already pointed""Yes. You pointed to the future. That does not mean you may drop the future on one boy's head" The room went quiet. Gran Torino muttered "Listen to the rat" Nezu smiled.
"Principal""Rat principal" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Ren warned him too""Midoriya?"
"Yes. Last time is not his debt" Recovery Girl's face hardened.
"Good boy. Medically irritating, morally precise" Toshinori whispered "He should not have had to be""No" she said "But he was. Now adults can do something useful with it" That landed. Toshinori opened his eyes.
"Yes" The morning after the Symbol, Endeavor stood alone in an agency room that did not belong to him. Not his office. Not his territory. A temporary coordination room near the Kamino aftermath perimeter, cleared of reporters and lined with screens showing damage reports, casualty summaries, arrest confirmations, and the same public statement looping across every channel. All Might will retire from active field hero work. Endeavor watched the words repeat. Then watched the frozen image again.
All Might standing in hero form. Pointing. Smiling. Victorious. Retired. The room was too quiet for how loudly his entire life had just changed. He had imagined reaching Number One in a thousand ways, though he would not have admitted imagination as fantasy. Rankings. victories. records. surpassing. proof. A ladder made from numbers and flame. He had not imagined this. All Might had not fallen publicly. He had not been exposed as small, weak, breakable before the world. He had not been humiliated.
He had not been surpassed. He had won. He had stood. He had pointed. Then he had stepped aside because the cost was real and the era had ended on his terms, or as close to his terms as the body allowed. Endeavor had wanted the summit. Now the summit looked like a hospital door he had not earned the right to open. The screen replayed All Might's answer from the fight. We prepare so people live. Endeavor's jaw tightened. A knock came at the door. He did not answer. The door opened anyway. Shoto stood there in U. A.
temporary clothing, expression unreadable, eyes fixed not on his father but on the screen behind him. Endeavor turned.
"Shoto" Todoroki's gaze stayed on All Might's frozen image.
"You are going to become Number One" Endeavor said nothing. The sentence should have felt like victory. It did not.
"Yes" Todoroki looked at him then.
"Did you win?" Endeavor's mouth tightened.
"No" The answer surprised both of them. Todoroki's face changed by the smallest amount. Endeavor looked back at the screen.
"All Might won""Yes""And retired""Yes" The flames along Endeavor's shoulders had not ignited, but heat still bent the air around him. Todoroki said "You got what you wanted" Endeavor's hands closed.
"Did I?" The words sounded wrong in his own voice. Too close to something someone else might have asked. Someone pale in a hospital room whose warning All Might had listened to. Endeavor remembered Kamino. All Might did not rush. All Might did not waste himself. All Might did not chase traps. All Might stayed on the center because other heroes held the board. All Might won in hero form because he had listened to constraints before the fight began. And one of those constraints had come from Ren Akiyama.
A General Studies student. A kidnapped child. A boy with scars and fragments and a body altered by monsters. All Might had listened. The Number One Hero had listened and survived better because of it. Endeavor did not know what to do with that. So he did what he always did first. He turned it into a problem to solve.
"I want to speak with Akiyama" Todoroki's eyes sharpened.
"Why?" Endeavor heard the danger in the question. Not physical. Worse. Moral.
"He advised All Might" Todoroki's face became very still.
"No" Endeavor looked at him.
"No?"
"He warned All Might""That distinction matters?" Todoroki stared at him.
"Yes" The answer irritated him because it was correct and because Shoto had said it without effort. Endeavor turned fully.
"I need to understand what All Might understood before Kamino" Todoroki's voice was cold.
"You want to use Ren because All Might listened to him" Endeavor's temper flared. The room warmed. Then Kamino's street returned in memory. All Might turning force away from civilians. All Might not rushing. All Might saying the costume was filled by people who stayed. Endeavor forced the heat down.
"No" Todoroki did not soften.
"Then ask differently" Endeavor hated that sentence. He hated that it sounded like something an adult should already know. He hated that he had no answer ready. Todoroki stepped back.
"Ren is in medical""I know""Then do not make him another battlefield" The door closed behind him before Endeavor responded. Endeavor stood alone with the screen. All Might pointed again. You are next. For the first time in his life, Endeavor wondered if the words had ever meant what he thought they meant. Izuku Midoriya woke to his mother's hand on his hair and All Might's retirement on every screen he was not allowed to hold. He had been warned. Last time is not your debt. He had repeated it.
Kurose had made him say what it meant. He had understood the sentence in his brain. His heart had thrown it away the second the statement became public. All Might will retire from active field hero work. The words sat on his chest harder than any injury. He had known All Might could not continue forever. He had known in a way no one else in the class knew. He had seen the thin form. He had inherited One For All. He had been chosen because All Might could not keep being All Might alone.
Knowing did not make the announcement smaller. Inko watched him read the statement on the approved medical display.
"Izuku""I know" He hated how fast he said it.
"I know what you are going to say. I know it is not my fault. I know he chose. I know Ren said it is not my debt. I know" His voice cracked.
"I know all of it" Inko did not tell him knowledge should be enough. She had learned better. Instead, she said "Then we will wait for the rest of you to catch up" Izuku covered his face.
"All Might fought because of all of us""Yes""He pointed""Yes""Everyone thinks it means the next generation""Yes" His hand shook.
"For me it means me" Inko's face broke.
"I know" He looked at her through tears.
"What do I do with that?" She sat on the edge of the bed as close as medical equipment allowed.
"Today? You breathe. You do not make a lifetime out of a headline before breakfast" A laugh escaped him and turned into a sob.
"That sounds like something Ren's mother would say""I will take that as a compliment""It is""Good" Izuku lowered his hand.
"All Might said he is coming back" Inko nodded.
"Yes""As Toshinori""Yes" Izuku stared at the statement. It did not say Toshinori anywhere. It could not. That name belonged to few people. He whispered "Then I have to protect that too" Inko's hand tightened around his.
"You have to let adults protect things too" Izuku did not answer. He would learn. Not that morning. But maybe because All Might had come back alive, there would be mornings enough to try. Bakugo did not read the statement at first. He heard it through the wall. Kirishima had the approved common-room display turned low, and Kaminari's voice carried badly because Kaminari had never learned how to whisper under emotional strain. All Might will retire from active field hero work.
Bakugo lay on his assigned bed and stared at the ceiling. The ceiling remained alive through cowardice. He wanted to blast it. He did not. That was not because he had calmed down. It was because Aizawa had said ceilings were not approved emotional targets and because Cementoss had apparently become personally invested in structural integrity after Kamino. So Bakugo stared. All Might had won. All Might had stayed in hero form. All Might had pointed. All Might had come back as the other one. The real one. Whatever.
And now the statement said retire. Which meant the fight had ended him anyway. Which meant All For One had gotten something. Which meant the public target, the classified target, the stupid scar bastard, Deku's inheritance, the teachers, the adults, all of it was tangled around a fight Bakugo had watched from a chair. A chair. His hands sparked. Someone knocked. He ignored it. The door opened.
Kirishima stood outside with two wrapped protein bars and a face like he had decided courage meant being annoying at close range. Bakugo sat up.
"Leave" Kirishima held up one bar.
"No" Bakugo's eyes narrowed.
"Are you suicidal before lunch?"
"Probably not""Then leave" Kirishima tossed the protein bar onto the bed. Bakugo caught it by reflex and hated himself for catching it. Kirishima did not smile. That was why Bakugo did not throw it back. Kirishima said "All Might retired" Bakugo's jaw clenched.
"I heard""He won first""I saw""He came back" Bakugo glared.
"You done listing obvious facts like a broken news crawler?" Kirishima's mouth tightened.
"No. I am saying them because obvious facts are hard to believe right now" Bakugo looked away. The wrapper crinkled in his fist. Kirishima leaned against the doorframe.
"Ren is alive too" Bakugo's eyes snapped back. Kirishima lifted both hands.
"I know you know""Then shut up""I am saying the obvious facts" Bakugo's teeth ground together. Kirishima continued "All Might won. Toshinori came back. Ren is alive. We stayed. That is the list for now" Bakugo looked down at the protein bar. The list was too small. The list was everything. He tore the wrapper open with more violence than food deserved. Kirishima pretended not to look relieved. Good. Bakugo would have killed him. Probably. In a controlled emotional way.
In a separate medical wing, Ragdoll woke again to absence. Not darkness. Absence. Her eyes opened and the world did not unfold the way it should have. No constellation of names. No distant points of consciousness. No familiar signatures. No automatic map of people she loved, people nearby, people hidden, people needing help. No gentle pressure of Search at the back of the mind, always present, always offering too much and never enough. Silence. Not quiet. Silence.
She panicked before she remembered where her body was. Mandalay was there. So was Tiger. Pixie-Bob slept folded badly in a chair and woke the moment Ragdoll's breathing changed. Mandalay leaned forward.
"Here" Ragdoll's eyes found her face. Not through Search. Through sight. Slower. Too slow.
"Manda""Yes""I can't—""I know" Ragdoll's breathing shook.
"I tried not to""I know""It is gone" Mandalay's face crumpled.
"Yes" Ragdoll stared at the ceiling. Gone. The word was too small and too complete.
"They took it" Tiger's voice came from the side.
"Yes" Ragdoll's mouth trembled.
"Am I still—" Mandalay moved closer, stopping exactly where medical rules allowed.
"Yes""You did not let me finish""I did not need to" Ragdoll's eyes filled. Pixie-Bob stood and pressed both hands over her own mouth, as if holding back every word that might break the room. Ragdoll whispered "I cannot find anyone" Mandalay's voice shook.
"You do not have to find us to have us" The sentence had already been said once. It needed to be said again. It would need to be said for weeks. Months. Maybe longer. Ragdoll closed her eyes and cried without sound. At U. A., Ren heard the official statement a second time from Nezu. The principal came to R-2 in person because some sentences deserved legs.
Recovery Girl nearly blocked him on principle and then allowed it because Nezu had brought no paperwork visible to patients, which was one of the highest forms of respect available that morning. Kurose came with him. Aizawa stood in the doorway and pretended not to be standing guard. Ren lay propped only a little, because Recovery Girl had allowed eight degrees and no more. Hana and Daichi remained in the room. The signs remained. Bentaro remained under inspection. Nezu looked at Ren.
"All Might's retirement is public""I heard""The world did not see Toshinori's form""Good""Toshinori remains alive and medically stable enough to be insulting" Recovery Girl said "Barely" Ren breathed.
"Good" Nezu climbed onto the chair near the desk.
"The public narrative is relief and uncertainty. All For One is captured. Garaki remains unconfirmed and likely escaped. Ragdoll is alive. Search is functionally absent in initial assessment" Ren's left fingers tightened. Hana noticed. Daichi noticed. Nezu continued "Partial archives were secured. Their contents are under lockdown. No decisions involving your body are being made" Ren looked at him. The room sharpened. Nezu met his eyes.
"No decisions involving your body are being made" he repeated Kurose added "Not by them. Not by us. Not today" Ren swallowed.
"Shock?" Recovery Girl's face hardened. Aizawa's gaze moved to Nezu. Nezu did not pretend confusion.
"Referenced. Not actionable. Not clean. Not discussed as option" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Garaki left roads""Yes" Kurose said "Roads are not orders" Aizawa added "Roads can be blocked" Nezu folded his paws.
"Or regulated. Or studied without entering. Or destroyed when destruction is safest" Recovery Girl said "Or ignored until patients are not feverish enough to make philosophy everyone else's problem" Ren almost smiled.
"Reasonable""Do not sound surprised" His shoulder pain dropped again. This time the right ribs went quiet with it. Ren's eyes widened. Recovery Girl moved before he spoke.
"Map""Left wrist. bed. back. throat. right side quiet""Spread?"
"Shoulder to ribs""Panic?"
"Rising" Hana's hand went to his hair. Daichi leaned in. Nezu went still. Kurose stepped closer but not too close. Aizawa's expression sharpened. Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Pain modulation widening without command" Ren breathed too fast.
"I am not using it""I know""I do not want—""I know" His left hand clawed at the blanket. The right side of his torso felt absent in a way that made the room tilt. Not painless. Missing. Wrong. The grafted function had taken away the wrong information. Scar Tissue answered with heat. Thin pale lines rose under his skin along the shoulder, ribs, and forearm. Not the full lattice. Not yet. A warning draft. A map being drawn badly from both directions. Ren gasped.
"Back. bed. left wrist. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl" Recovery Girl's voice cut through.
"Left wrist pressure" Daichi placed two fingers under Ren's left palm. Ren pressed. Hana said "Warm or cold?"
"Cold right side. warm skin. wrong" Kurose's voice was steady.
"Room name""R-2""Door status""Closed. ours" Aizawa said "Stopping is data" Ren almost laughed and almost panicked in the same breath.
"Terrible timing""Still true" The pale lines under his skin faded after thirty seconds. Pain returned to the ribs like a late apology. Ren sucked in air.
"Pain back" Recovery Girl checked the monitor again.
"Good" Ren turned his head toward her.
"Good?"
"Pain is information. You lost too much" He closed his eyes.
"Contained""For now" The phrase was ugly. Everyone heard it. This time, Nezu said nothing clever. Kurose looked at the monitor. Aizawa looked at Ren. Hana bent over her son and touched her forehead lightly to his hair. Daichi's fingers stayed beneath Ren's left hand. Recovery Girl's face was stone. Ren opened his eyes.
"Not integrated""No" Recovery Girl said The truth entered the room. Before Kamino, they had used words like contained, encapsulated, foreign functions, under protest. During Kamino, the functions had flared and quieted and flared again. Last night, after Toshinori's return, the Graft Lattice activity had lowered enough to let them breathe. But lowered was not solved. Contained was not integrated. Surviving the night was not the same as surviving the morning after. Nezu's voice was quiet.
"Then we adjust the timeline" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"We do not timeline a medical crisis""Of course""You were about to""I was about to say we prepare for one" She held his gaze. Then nodded once.
"Better" Ren stared at the ceiling. His body was too quiet and too loud at once. All Might had ended in public and survived in private. The world had woken up to a missing pillar. Ragdoll had woken up to missing Search. Ren had woken up to foreign functions still inside him, still learning where pain belonged. He whispered "The world changed" Hana's hand moved gently through his hair.
"Yes" Daichi's voice was low.
"So did the room" Ren looked at the signs. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost. The room had stayed. The students had stayed. Toshinori had come back. All Might had retired. Endeavor was somewhere looking at a summit that had turned into a question. Garaki was somewhere else with roads he should never have been allowed to find.
And inside Ren's body, two stolen functions waited like uninvited guests who had survived the night and now needed either to be contained forever or become something else before their separation tore the house apart. Recovery Girl noticed his eyes drifting.
"No future misery arranging" Ren swallowed.
"Hard""Yes""What now?" She looked at the monitor. Then at Nezu. Then at Hana and Daichi. Then back at Ren.
"Now we keep you alive through the morning" He breathed.
"And after?" Recovery Girl's face hardened with the kind of honesty that did not pretend kindness required certainty.
"After depends on what your body does next" The right side of Ren's ribs pulsed. Pain. Heat. Then a thin line of pale scar-light rose under the skin and vanished before anyone could measure it properly. Not integration. Not yet. A warning. A promise. A road. The morning after the Symbol had begun with the world asking what came after All Might. By noon, R-2 had a different question. What came after containment?
