Chương 121: After the Last Time
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~45 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
After the last punch, the world wanted another image. That was what the world always did. It wanted the raised fist. The clean smile. The villain down. The hero standing. The line that told everyone where to put their fear now that the monster had a body, a crater, restraints, and a name people could say without whispering. For a few seconds, Kamino gave the world what it wanted. All Might stood over All For One. Hero form still held.
The Symbol of Peace remained enormous against the dust, one arm damaged, costume torn, blood at his mouth, smile bright enough to force hope back into millions of throats that had forgotten how to breathe. He pointed at the camera.
"You are next" The words crossed Japan like thunder. Then, lower, carried through the secured U. A. feed and not most public microphones, he said the sentence that mattered more to the few who had been waiting behind the Symbol.
"I am coming back" The world did not understand the second sentence. That was fine. It was not for the world. In the student room, Midoriya heard it and folded forward like the words had cut the strings holding him upright. Inko's hand moved immediately to the back of his head on the medical screen.
"Breathe, Izuku" Midoriya tried. Failed. Tried again.
"He said it" he whispered Bakugo stood in front of his chair, fists clenched, eyes fixed on the screen as police teams swarmed the crater around All For One.
"He better mean it" Kirishima wiped his face with the heel of his hand.
"He won" Bakugo snapped "Obviously" His voice broke on the last syllable. No one called attention to it. That was probably why the room survived. Iida stood with both hands clenched at his sides, shaking openly now that staying no longer required him to look like a statue. Uraraka was crying into Asui's shoulder. Asui's face was wet and very still. Kaminari kept saying "he won" under his breath like repetition might make his nervous system believe it. Jiro had turned away from the screen but not left it.
Momo sat with one hand over her mouth. Sero looked at the ceiling as if trying to keep tears from falling by negotiating with gravity. Shinso had one hand over his eyes. He did not speak. Kurose stood at the front of the room and did not tell them to be quiet. Sound was allowed now. Motion was still not. The screen shifted from All Might to aerial footage, then to capture teams surrounding All For One. Police restraints. Quirk-suppressive gear. Medics. Heroes holding perimeter.
Endeavor's flames burning low near a ruined street. Best Jeanist's fibers across half a block. Kamui Woods bracing a damaged building. Mt. Lady sitting heavily against a collapsed wall, still holding debris away from an empty evacuation route. Text appeared under the broadcast. ALL MIGHT DEFEATS ALL FOR ONE IN KAMINO The font was dramatic now. Kaminari stared at it through tears.
"That font is also terrible" Jiro made a broken sound. A laugh. Then several people laughed because apparently the human body could not hold that much fear without finding stupid escape routes. Bakugo turned on them.
"Why are you laughing?" Kaminari pointed weakly at the screen.
"Font" Bakugo stared. Then looked back at the broadcast.
"It is a trash font" Midoriya laughed through tears from the medical screen. That broke the room in a different way. Kurose let it. For ten seconds, the students stayed and laughed badly at a headline font after watching the greatest hero in the country survive the fight that should have killed him. It was absurd. It was allowed. Then the next verified update reached Kurose's tablet. Her face changed. The laughter died by itself. She read once. Then again.
Aizawa's voice came through the room speaker, rough and hoarse.
"All For One is captured. Ragdoll is alive and under medical care. League core escaped through forced warp interference. Multiple technicians captured. Partial archives secured. Nomu threat contained. No student action required" No student action required. The sentence did not feel insulting this time. It felt like a door that had stayed closed. Asui's hand tightened around Uraraka's.
"Ragdoll is alive" Kurose nodded.
"Yes" Asui's mouth trembled.
"Search?" Silence. Aizawa did not answer through the speaker. Kurose did.
"We do not have full medical confirmation for discussion here" Asui looked at her. Kurose's face softened.
"But you are allowed to understand that alive does not mean unchanged" Asui closed her eyes.
"Yes" Todoroki stared at the image of Endeavor holding the perimeter, flames reflecting in his eyes.
"All Might won" No one knew whether he was speaking to the room or himself. Then he added quietly "My father saw it" Momo turned toward him. He did not look away from the screen.
"He saw what Number One costs when it is not about being first" No one answered. Some sentences needed space more than response. Midoriya lifted his head on the medical screen.
"Can we see All Might?" Kurose looked at her tablet.
"No public feed. He is being medically assessed" Midoriya's face paled. Bakugo's hands sparked once. Kurose lifted her head before either could fall into the wrong math.
"Verified status. Alive. Off public feed. Medical assessment underway" Midoriya pressed his free hand over his heart. Bakugo looked away.
"Alive" Kurose nodded.
"Alive" Shinso lowered his hand from his eyes. His voice was hoarse.
"Silence is still okay?" Kurose looked at him.
"Yes" He nodded once. Then stayed silent. In R-2, Recovery Girl received the same confirmed status through her earpiece before she let Ren see it written. Alive. That word came first. Everything else could wait behind it and learn manners.
"All For One captured" she said "Ragdoll alive. All Might alive. League core escaped. Archives partial. Nomu contained" Ren stared at her. She knew what he was asking before he asked. She always did. She said it anyway.
"Alive as Toshinori" Ren's eyes closed. The room disappeared under the sentence. His left hand trembled against the blanket. Hana covered his hair with one hand and did not ask permission again because the permission had been there since the broadcast almost broke him. Daichi placed two fingers beneath Ren's palm, light and steady, giving him something to press against without trapping him. Ren pressed. Not hard. Enough.
"As Toshinori" he whispered Recovery Girl's face was wet and furious.
"Yes" Ren breathed in. Out. The breath broke halfway. Hana bent over him.
"He came back" Ren nodded once. The motion hurt. He did it anyway.
"He came back" Daichi's voice was low.
"Then your warning was not permission" Ren opened his eyes. The ceiling was still there. R-2 was still there. The signs were still there. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost. Kamino had not become a grave. Not for Toshinori. Not tonight. The Graft Lattice, which had been burning under his skin since the final exchange, finally began to settle. Pain returned to the shoulder in clearer shape.
Repair warmth lowered. Scar containment stopped feeling like a hand clamped around lightning and became only pressure under skin. Recovery Girl noticed immediately.
"Graft activity dropping" Ren closed his eyes.
"Good""Do not sound so surprised your body listens sometimes""It has been inconsistent""Your body was abducted and medically assaulted. I will allow inconsistency" Hana made a sharp sound. Daichi's fingers tightened under Ren's palm. Recovery Girl did not take the words back. They needed the truth. Ren did too. He whispered "All For One?"
"Captured""Garaki?" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"No confirmation" Ren's eyes opened.
"Escaped""Likely" He stared at the ceiling. The victory made room for teeth. All For One captured. Garaki likely gone. League core escaped. Ragdoll alive but edited by taking. Ren alive but edited by adding. Archive partial. Shock waiting somewhere in contaminated data. Last public victory complete. After beginning. He swallowed. Recovery Girl saw the thought forming and struck first.
"No mission board" Ren looked at her.
"Did not say anything""You were arranging future misery behind your eyes" Hana said "She is right" Daichi added "Very visible arrangement" Ren sighed.
"Betrayed by family" Recovery Girl adjusted the blanket near his knees.
"Saved by family. Betrayed later if necessary" He almost smiled. The medical transport carrying Toshinori Yagi did not use the route cameras could see. That had been planned, amended, threatened over, and enforced by Tsukauchi, Nezu, Recovery Girl, Gran Torino, and several police officers who understood that some secrets did not belong to the press simply because a villain wanted them dragged into the street. The public saw All Might standing. They saw All Might point. They saw All For One restrained.
They saw aerial footage and hero perimeters and news anchors trying to decide whether their voices should sound triumphant or terrified. They did not see the moment after the public feed lost angle. They did not see Toshinori's hero form shudder once, then again, then finally collapse inward like a building whose supports had waited for the evacuation order before giving way. Gran Torino caught him with a curse. Tsukauchi caught the other side.
Toshinori coughed blood into the cloth shoved at his mouth and clutched at it like he could keep the man beneath the symbol from spilling out of him in pieces.
"Idiot" Gran Torino snarled Toshinori's breath was thin.
"Alive idiot""You said that already""Still true""Barely""Counts" Gran Torino's face twisted.
"Yes. Damn you. It counts" Medical staff moved in around them, but carefully. Not because Toshinori looked fragile. He did. Horribly. But because the man who had just won the most public battle in Japan needed not to be treated like a broken monument while cameras still hunted the area for cracks. Tsukauchi stepped between him and the open sightline.
"Public angle blocked" Toshinori's head lifted with difficulty.
"The students?"
"Contained. Watching with staff. No student movement""Ren?"
"Conscious. He heard you" Toshinori closed his eyes. The breath that left him sounded more like a collapse than relief.
"Good" Gran Torino shoved him toward the stretcher.
"No emotional speeches. Medical now" Toshinori gave a weak smile.
"You sound like Recovery Girl""Bite your tongue""Cannot spare it""Good. Talk less" They loaded him into the shielded transport. As the doors closed, Toshinori looked once toward Kamino's ruined skyline. The place where All Might had stood for the last time as Number One. The world still thought the Symbol had won and walked away somewhere behind smoke. That was not entirely false. It was only incomplete. Inside the transport, Toshinori let the smile fall completely. No cameras. No audience.
No need to fill the costume now that the costume had done its last public job. His hand shook against the stretcher rail. One. Two. Three. A line beneath. The motion was clumsy. Small. Borrowed from a boy who had bled it into lab furniture. Gran Torino saw. He looked away instantly. Mercy in an old man often looked like pretending not to notice. At the outer medical perimeter, Ragdoll's eyes opened for thirteen seconds. Mandalay was there.
So were Pixie-Bob and Tiger, though the medical staff had nearly lost an argument trying to keep them at a distance. The compromise was clear sightline, no crowding, no touching until allowed. Ragdoll's eyes opened without focus at first. Then found Mandalay. Her lips moved. No sound. Mandalay leaned closer, stopping exactly where the medic's hand indicated.
"Here" Ragdoll's mouth trembled.
"Manda?" The word broke every Pussycat in the room. Mandalay's hands clenched in the blanket near Ragdoll's side, not touching skin.
"Yes. Here. You are out" Ragdoll's eyes shifted. Too fast. Searching. Then panic. Not ordinary panic. The panic of reaching for a limb and finding empty air. Her breath hitched.
"Where—" Mandalay knew. Her face crumpled and hardened at the same time.
"Do not search" Ragdoll's eyes filled with terror.
"I can't" The words were barely there. Pixie-Bob made a sound behind her hand. Tiger turned his face away. Mandalay leaned closer, tears falling now.
"I know" Ragdoll's breathing spiraled.
"I can't feel—""Do not search" Mandalay repeated, voice shaking but firm "You are here. I am here. Pixie is here. Tiger is here. Medical is here. You do not have to find us to have us" Ragdoll stared at her. The words reached slowly. Too slowly. But they reached. She whispered "Here?" Mandalay nodded.
"Here" Ragdoll's eyes closed again. Not peace. Not healing. Sedation and exhaustion taking what fear could not hold. The monitor stayed alive. Mandalay lowered her head until her forehead almost touched the side of the bed. Almost. No touching yet. Alive first. Behind her, Pixie-Bob said through clenched teeth "They took it" Tiger's voice was low enough to frighten the room.
"Yes" Mandalay kept looking at Ragdoll.
"They did not take her" No one spoke. That sentence would have to be said many times before anyone believed it. At U. A., Nezu began sorting victory from contamination. That was how he thought of it privately. Not because the victory was false. It was not. All For One was captured. Ragdoll was alive. A major Nomu and Quirk-factor node had been seized or destroyed. Several technicians were in custody. Partial archives had been recovered. All Might had survived. Students had not become rescue objectives.
Civilians had been evacuated before the largest public exchange. The world had seen All Might stand in hero form until the end. Victory. And yet. Garaki had not been captured. The League core had escaped. Search had been stolen. Ren's body carried graft-derived functions. Archive Node Four remained only partial. Shock appeared in three separate references across recovered data, none clean enough to use and all too clean to dismiss. Several Nomu pods had been purged remotely before seizure.
Someone had activated evacuation protocols from outside the captured site seconds before All For One arrived, which meant the room behind rooms still had other doors. Victory with teeth. Nezu sat in the operations room with Tsukauchi on one line, Hakamata on another, and Power Loader sending files with increasingly aggressive labels. Kurose entered without knocking because exhaustion had murdered courtesy.
"How bad?" Nezu looked up.
"That question has categories""Ren category""Alive. Stable enough. Graft activity reduced after All Might status confirmation" Kurose closed her eyes for one breath.
"Good""Ragdoll category""Alive. Search likely stolen" Kurose's jaw tightened.
"Likely?"
"Functionally absent according to initial medical report" She sat down. Hard. Nezu continued "All Might category. Alive. Hero form held publicly. Toshinori form collapsed after public feed was blocked. Severe exhaustion, old injury exacerbation, no immediate combat capacity. Recovery Girl has already threatened three agencies and one ambulance" Kurose rubbed her forehead.
"Good""Garaki category""Escaped?"
"Yes""Damn it""Indeed""Archive category?" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"Partial. Enough to confirm the Quirk-factor network is larger than Kamino. Enough to confirm Shock as a preserved classification tied to pediatric records. Not enough to decide anything" Kurose looked at him.
"No one is deciding anything involving Ren's body tonight""No""Say it with less principal voice" Nezu folded his paws.
"No one is deciding anything involving Ren's body tonight""Better" He regarded her.
"You are becoming comfortable giving me orders""I am becoming tired of children being turned into policy objects""Good" Kurose gave him a flat look.
"Do not sound pleased""I am often pleased by dangerous competence""I will resign from being complimented""Denied" She almost smiled. Then did not.
"Does Ren know Garaki escaped?"
"Yes""How did he take it?"
"Recovery Girl prevented mission-board behavior" Kurose exhaled.
"Good" Nezu looked at the map of Kamino.
"The public will wake tomorrow believing All Might won""He did""Yes" Kurose looked at him sharply.
"You said that like there is a footnote""There are many footnotes. But the sentence remains true" She looked at the screen. All Might had won. Toshinori had survived. The world had changed anyway. In the student room, the first wave of relief collapsed into exhaustion. No one knew what to do after watching the end of an era and being told to remain seated. That was fair. Eras had poor exit instructions. Aizawa returned to the room at 23: 42, looking like a man stitched together by resentment and eye drops.
The students straightened badly. Midoriya lifted his head on the medical screen. Bakugo stood again and did not pretend he had a bathroom excuse. Aizawa faced them.
"All For One is in custody. Ragdoll is alive. All Might is alive and under medical care. No students deployed. No students injured in the operation. You stayed" The last sentence landed harder than the victory report. You stayed. Iida closed his eyes. Uraraka started crying again. Kaminari put both hands over his face. Shinso looked down at his knees. Bakugo stared at Aizawa.
"Did we do anything?" The question sounded like an attack. It was not. Aizawa understood.
"Yes" Bakugo's jaw tightened.
"Sitting in a room?"
"Staying out of the enemy's routes" Bakugo looked away. Aizawa continued "Do not make the mistake of thinking the only useful action is the one a camera can understand" Todoroki's gaze moved to the screen where a replay showed All Might pointing. Quietly, he said "That applies to adults too" Aizawa looked at him.
"Yes" Midoriya's voice came through the medical speaker.
"Is he really alive?" Aizawa's expression shifted in a way most people would not catch.
"Yes""As All Might?" Aizawa hesitated. Then answered correctly.
"As Toshinori" Midoriya broke again. Inko held him. This time, no one tried to stop the crying. Bakugo turned away from the screen, shoulders rigid. Kirishima moved one step closer and stopped.
"Bakugo""Don't" Kirishima nodded.
"Okay" After a moment, Bakugo said "He still won" Kirishima's voice was thick.
"Yeah""He stayed All Might""Yeah" Bakugo's hands shook.
"But he came back as the other one" Kirishima blinked.
"The other one?" Bakugo's face twisted.
"The real one. Whatever. Shut up" Kirishima did not shut up entirely. He said softly "Yeah" Bakugo did not hit him. Progress. Aizawa let the room breathe. Then ruined it responsibly.
"Debrief ends here. You will be escorted back in groups. No independent movement. No media consumption without staff until morning. If anyone starts trying to find additional footage, I will become personally unpleasant" Sero raised a hand weakly.
"More than usual?" Aizawa stared at him. Sero lowered the hand.
"Understood" Kurose's voice came from the doorway behind him.
"Ren asked for one more message if Kamino became public" Aizawa turned.
"So deliver it" Kurose looked at the students. Her voice softened.
"He said if you watched, you did not watch alone" The room was silent. Then Mina whispered "Stupid" Shinso said "Unfortunately effective" Kaminari sniffed.
"Terrible font. good message" Jiro wiped her face.
"Very good message" Midoriya nodded on the screen, unable to speak. Bakugo looked at the floor.
"Tell him the room stayed" Kurose's face changed.
"I will" In R-2, Ren was losing the fight against sleep when Kurose returned. Recovery Girl allowed exactly three sentences. Kurose used the first carefully.
"Students stayed" Ren opened his eyes halfway. The second.
"Bakugo said the room stayed" Ren's mouth trembled. The third.
"All Might is being brought to U. A. under medical shield" Ren's eyes opened more. Recovery Girl sighed.
"I can hear you becoming awake. Stop it" Ren looked at her.
"Can I see him?"
"No" He closed his eyes. The answer hurt less because it was honest. Recovery Girl added "Not yet" His eyes opened again.
"Yet?" She looked furious with herself for offering hope in a scheduled manner.
"If he survives transport without becoming dramatic, and if your numbers remain less stupid, a short secured visual check may be possible" Ren breathed.
"Trustworthy""Overused""Still true" Kurose sat beside the bed.
"Three sentences exhausted" Ren looked at her.
"You cheated with long sentences""I did""Good" She smiled faintly. Then looked at the signs on the wall. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost.
"Room stayed" she said Ren closed his eyes.
"Good room" Recovery Girl muttered "Do not praise it too much. It is still on probation" Ren slept before he could answer. When Toshinori arrived at U. A., the building received him without ceremony. That was deliberate. The Symbol had already had ceremony in Kamino. The man needed doors, blankets, oxygen, blood work, and several adults willing to lie to the press while not lying to him. Recovery Girl met the transport herself.
She took one look at Toshinori on the stretcher and said "You look like a scarecrow that fought a god and tried to smile during the autopsy" Toshinori's eyes opened weakly.
"Good evening to you too""Do not be charming. You are not cleared for charm" Gran Torino snorted.
"He spent all his charm on not dying" Recovery Girl glared at him.
"You are not cleared for commentary either" Tsukauchi looked exhausted enough to become furniture.
"He remained off public view after transformation""Good" Toshinori tried to lift his head. Recovery Girl pushed it down with two fingers.
"No""The students—""Alive. Contained. Crying in developmentally appropriate ways""Midoriya?"
"Alive. Crying in successor-specific ways" Toshinori's eyes closed.
"Ren?"
"Awake earlier. Now asleep because I am competent" A weak smile touched Toshinori's mouth.
"He heard?"
"Yes. He asked if you came back as Toshinori" Toshinori went still. Recovery Girl's voice lowered.
"I said yes" A tear slipped sideways into his hair. He did not wipe it. Good. No strength wasted on hiding from the people who had earned the right to see. Recovery Girl leaned over him.
"Listen carefully. You won. All For One is captured. The world saw All Might stand. Now you are going to let Toshinori be a patient or I will make victory extremely unpleasant" Toshinori's voice was barely there.
"I came back" Recovery Girl's face twisted.
"Yes, you idiot. Now stay back" He laughed once and coughed hard enough that every medic moved.
"Less laughing" she snapped"Tell him?"
"Not while both of you are medically irritating""Please" Recovery Girl stared at him. Then at the monitor. Then at the ceiling, as if asking whatever cruel force governed heroic idiots why she had been assigned so many.
"Thirty seconds visual. No speeches. If either of you starts being symbolic, I end it" Toshinori's eyes opened.
"Thank you""Do not thank me for controlled negligence" A secured visual line connected ten minutes later. Ren woke because Recovery Girl told him to wake and then complained when he did. The screen near his bed turned on. Not public feed. No battlefield. No Symbol. Toshinori Yagi lay in a medical bed, thin form visible only to the secured room, oxygen line at his nose, bruises dark beneath pale skin, eyes sunken, alive. Ren stared. The sight hurt. Not because it was ugly. Because it was true.
Toshinori looked back through the screen. For a moment, neither spoke. Recovery Girl stood between both rooms through sheer force of disapproval.
"Thirty seconds. No speeches" Toshinori smiled weakly.
"I came back" Ren's eyes burned.
"As Toshinori?"
"For now" Toshinori said "that is all I have left" Ren swallowed. The sentence could have been tragic. It was not. Not only.
"That was the point" Toshinori's smile broke. Ren's left hand moved on the blanket. One. Two. Three. A line beneath. Toshinori lifted his hand from his own bed with visible effort. Recovery Girl made a threatening sound from both rooms. He did it anyway. One. Two. Three. A line beneath. Here. Ren whispered "Last time?" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Yes" The word landed softly. Not as failure. As fact. Then Toshinori opened his eyes again.
"Last time as Number One. Not last time alive" Ren breathed.
"Good" Recovery Girl cut in.
"Time" Toshinori looked like he wanted to say more. Ren did too. Neither did. That was also survival. The screen went dark. Ren stared at the blank space. His face crumpled. Hana was there immediately. Daichi too. Recovery Girl stood at the side of the bed and did not pretend not to see. Ren cried silently for less than a minute. Not because All Might had fallen. Because Toshinori had not.
The next morning would bring announcements, rumors, analysis, fear, hero rankings, Commission statements, questions about All Might's future, questions about All For One, questions about Ragdoll, questions about U. A., questions about children and targets and why no one had known a monster could stand behind society for so long. The next morning would bring Endeavor closer to a throne he had chased for years and could no longer pretend looked the way he imagined.
The next morning would bring Midoriya a debt he had been warned not to make and would make anyway unless people held him. The next morning would bring Bakugo a room full of bad math and fewer places to hide from it. The next morning would bring Ren the knowledge that Garaki was still free and that some of the road he had found through atrocity now existed inside secured archives with labels like Shock waiting to become arguments. The next morning would bring everything after.
But that night, before morning could make demands, U. A. held its living. Ragdoll breathed under medical watch while Mandalay slept upright beside her chair with one hand hovering near the blanket. Toshinori Yagi slept in a secured medical room, alive beneath the absence of the Symbol. Izuku Midoriya cried himself into exhausted sleep while Inko held his shoulder. Katsuki Bakugo stared at the ceiling of a supervised dorm room and did not leave.
Hitoshi Shinso sat in silence until silence stopped feeling like a locked door. Aizawa let Recovery Girl put drops in his eyes without arguing for eleven full seconds. Kurose rewrote three reports that called Ren an intelligence source and replaced the phrase with student witness each time. Hana slept in a chair beside R-2's door. Daichi slept badly beside her with Bentaro across his knees.
And Ren Akiyama slept under the signs his friends had made, with pale lines quiet beneath his skin and the word mine still waiting where no one else was allowed to touch it. All Might had won. Toshinori had come home. The world had not returned to normal. It had only survived the night.
