The mark was not a word. That was what the evidence report said first. Three vertical smears of blood and one horizontal line beneath them. Uneven pressure. Left hand. Limited range. Likely made while restrained or partially restrained. No complete alphabetic formation. No confirmed linguistic meaning. The report did not say Ren. Reports tried not to say names when blood could do the speaking. Hana hated the report immediately. She read it anyway.
Daichi stood beside her in the secured family room, one hand on the back of her chair, the other around Bentaro's handle. The umbrella had been retagged after the second laboratory search, because someone in security apparently believed trauma changed umbrella risk level. Hana had stared at the new tag until the security officer had looked away first. Now Bentaro leaned against Daichi's leg like a witness. On the table lay the image. Three lines. One base. Not a word.
Hana touched the edge of the photograph without touching the blood in it, because it was only an image and still somehow felt sacred.
"It is Here" she said Daichi did not answer too quickly. That was one of the reasons she loved him. He looked at the lines for a long time. Then said "Yes" Kurose sat across from them, face pale with the kind of exhaustion that had stopped being tired hours ago and had become a function.
"The lab report cannot confirm intention" Hana looked up.
"Kurose""I know""Do you?" Kurose's face changed. Not defensive. Hurt. Good hurt. Human hurt.
"I do" Hana looked back at the image.
"He marks presence before explanation" Daichi's hand tightened on the chair.
"He did it as a child" Kurose leaned forward slightly. Daichi continued "When he was small and got scared in crowded places, he would tap three times on something and drag his finger under it. Door frame. table. my sleeve. He said it meant I am here and the floor is still here" Hana closed her eyes. She had forgotten that. No. Not forgotten. Packed it away with all the other tiny behaviors that became heartbreaking only after someone tried to steal the child who made them. Kurose went very still.
"He did that before U. A.?" Hana opened her eyes.
"Yes" Kurose's voice became careful.
"Did he use it after diagnosis?"
"Sometimes. Less when he got older. He thought it was childish" Daichi's mouth tightened.
"He stopped when he started pretending fear was inefficient" Kurose looked at the photograph again. Three lines. One base. I am here and the floor is still here. Not a word. Older than a word. Kurose stood.
"I need to bring this to Nezu" Hana's hand closed on the edge of the table.
"Bring the part that matters" Kurose looked at her.
"Not only the mark. The boy who made it" Kurose nodded once.
"Yes" When she left the room, she carried the photograph as if the paper weighed more than a file. In the operations room, the mark changed shape. Not physically. On the screen it remained three uneven verticals and one base, enlarged until every smear and pressure change became a landscape. But after Kurose explained what Daichi had remembered, nobody in the room could treat it like accidental blood transfer anymore. Aizawa stood closest to the screen. He had not sat since returning from the second lab.
Recovery Girl had threatened him twice. He had ignored her once. The second time she had threatened to sedate him and he had believed her enough to lean against the table. Now he looked at the mark. Three lines. One base. His voice came out rough.
"He knew he was being moved" Kurose said "Likely""He was restrained""Yes""He used the left hand""Yes""He had enough cognition to leave a childhood grounding mark""Yes" Aizawa closed his eyes. For two breaths, the room let him. Then he opened them.
"Then he was conscious enough to observe" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"Careful" Aizawa looked at him.
"I know" Kurose said "Medical first when we recover him. Consent before debrief. I know. But he is leaving evidence. We have to be ready to receive what he chose to leave" Recovery Girl pointed her cane at the mark.
"That is not a debrief. That is a handprint on the wall of a burning building" No one argued. Dr. Seno's remote voice came through the speaker.
"I have preliminary blood analysis from the fabric and the smear sample. Ren was alive at the second site. The blood contains acute inflammatory markers, severe stress hormones, and traces suggesting active foreign Quirk-factor interaction" The room went cold. Aizawa said "Grafts" Dr. Seno was quiet for half a second.
"Yes. I cannot identify complete factors from the sample, but there are signatures inconsistent with Ren's baseline as recorded at U. A. Pain modulation markers may be present. Tissue recruitment markers as well" Recovery Girl's face became something the room avoided looking at directly.
"Pain Suppressor and Regenerative Scaffold" she said Kurose looked at her.
"You are naming possibilities?"
"I am naming the shape of what the monsters would consider useful" Nezu folded his paws.
"Assume Garaki has introduced at least two compatible biological support grafts. One to modulate pain. One to support tissue repair" All Might closed his eyes. His fists were open. That looked harder than closing them. Hakamata spoke from the console.
"The purge at the second site destroyed most samples, but the recovered supply labels support Dr. Seno's assessment. High-density recovery solution. neural dampening stabilizer. tissue growth regulator. Cooling packs designed for Quirk fever" Present Mic, silent until then, said "He is making Ren survive the experiments" Recovery Girl's voice cut in.
"No. Ren is surviving them. Do not give Garaki that verb" Present Mic swallowed.
"Right" Kurose wrote it down. Not because anyone needed the correction. Because they did. Ren is surviving them. Nezu looked at the network map.
"Second lab was evacuated before our arrival. Garaki is moving him between sites" Power Loader said "Or staging phases in prepared nodes. First holding and initial scan. second graft stabilization. third integration testing" Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"Where is the third?" Hakamata brought up supply movement.
"We have three candidates. One obvious. One probable. One ugly" All Might looked toward the map.
"Ugly?" Hakamata enlarged the third point.
"Old municipal trauma rehabilitation center. Closed after funding scandal. Officially converted to records storage. Large basement. independent generators. noise complaints from neighboring underground rail line dismissed as track vibration. Medical equipment disposal records inconsistent. Owned by a chain two degrees away from the shell attached to the first archive" Power Loader leaned in.
"That facility has old hydrotherapy and pressure-stabilization rooms. If modified, it could support long-duration restraint and recovery cycles" Dr. Seno's voice lowered.
"If Garaki is trying to force graft integration, he needs time, metabolic support, cooling, and controlled stressors. A trauma rehab center would fit" Aizawa was already looking at Nezu. Nezu did not pretend not to notice.
"We do not move yet" Aizawa's jaw tightened. Kurose said "Because it may be another already-emptied room""Or a trap" Nezu said "Or both. But the mark gives us more than presence. It gives us Ren's state. He is conscious, resisting, leaving traces, and being transported while still medically unstable. Garaki cannot move him indefinitely without cost" If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"His grafts will force care windows" Dr. Seno said "Yes. If Pain Suppressor and Regenerative Scaffold were introduced recently, the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours are volatile. Fever, nutrient demand, inflammatory spikes, destabilized pain perception, boundary response from Scar Tissue. Moving him repeatedly increases risk" All Might spoke quietly.
"Then Garaki will need to stop soon" Nezu nodded.
"Or he already has" The room looked at the ugly candidate. Old municipal trauma rehabilitation center. Not a location. Not yet. A direction. In the laboratory, Ren learned that Garaki preferred not to repeat stimuli unless repetition itself was the test. That was probably why the next phase did not begin with screens, voices, or stolen images. It began with a chair. A different one.
The transport frame had delivered him to a new room during the fever blur, and when Ren fully woke, he found himself no longer horizontal. He sat in a reclined support chair designed to hold the spine, shoulders, wrists, and legs without the appearance of a surgical table. The right arm was supported in a brace that kept the shoulder from bearing weight. The left arm had two wide ports attached: one nutrient line, one monitoring band. Chest free. Ankles restrained. wrists restrained. Neck free.
Garaki had given him the dignity of turning his head. That made the room larger. More cruel. Because now Ren could see what it wanted him to understand. This laboratory was not as clean as the first. Not dirtier. Older. Repurposed. The walls had been white once, then sealed again with newer material. A faded line on the far wall suggested something had been removed there. Therapy railings? Exercise equipment? A place where bodies had once relearned movement after injury. A rehabilitation room. Of course.
Ren almost laughed. Garaki had brought him to a room built for recovery and taught it captivity. The doctor stood near a console beside three medical screens. No speaker voice yet. Two assistants moved quietly behind him. The visible door was reinforced. There was probably another hidden panel because Garaki liked rooms with lies. Ren shifted his fingers. Left hand moved. Right hand moved less, but more than before. Pain answered, then softened at the edge. Pain Suppressor. Not fully. Not cleanly.
A partial lowering. Ren went still. Garaki saw.
"Ah" Ren closed his eyes. The doctor's voice came closer.
"Do not panic. That was not externally triggered" Ren opened his eyes. That was worse. Garaki's face reflected genuine curiosity.
"The pain modulation factor is beginning to respond to your own stress cycles. Not under your control, but no longer purely random" Ren breathed slowly. The right shoulder pain remained present. Dimmer. Not gone. There. Not door closed. Volume lowered. He hated that his body had found a version less terrifying. Garaki watched the monitor.
"Your rejection response is also lower""No" The doctor looked at him. Ren's voice was rough from fever and not enough water.
"Containment is not acceptance" Garaki's eyes brightened.
"You have named your own phase""I have named a wall""Walls define architecture" Ren looked at him.
"You cannot help sounding like that, can you?" Garaki's mouth twitched.
"No" The honesty almost made Ren want to scream. The doctor gestured to the room.
"This facility is more suitable for operational testing" Ren's stomach dropped. Operational. All For One's phrase from before returned. A weapon need not feel owned by the hand to cut. Ren gripped the chair arms as far as the restraints allowed.
"No" Garaki did not pretend confusion.
"We will not ask for combat output. That would be premature and wasteful. We will evaluate whether your body can use the grafts to maintain consciousness, reduce incapacitating pain, and support damaged tissue under controlled stress""You mean use them""Yes""No" Garaki came closer.
"Ren. Your body has already used them" His name in that voice was disgusting. Ren looked at him.
"Do not" Garaki paused. Then corrected.
"Akiyama" Worse in a different way. The doctor continued "During the playback trigger, the grafts aligned briefly with Scar Tissue. Pain suppression localized. Regenerative support activated. Boundary channels connected. That was not full integration. But it was function" Ren said nothing. His right shoulder throbbed low. Too low. He wanted the full pain back and also did not. That contradiction was the worst part. Garaki saw that too. Of course he did.
"You are afraid usefulness will make the violation harder to reject" Ren looked away. The room did not deserve his face. Garaki said "That fear is rational" Ren laughed once. Dry. Painful.
"Stop trying to be the reasonable monster" Garaki considered.
"I am not trying" That was probably true. The first stressor was movement. Not injury. Garaki made that clear as if Ren should be grateful. The chair tilted. Supports shifted. The restraints loosened enough for his torso to move through a narrow arc, then stopped. Mechanical rails guided his arms outward and inward. His right shoulder protested immediately. Pain rose. Pain Suppressor flickered. Scar Tissue warmed. Regenerative Scaffold sent heat through the joint. Ren clenched his teeth. Garaki watched the screens.
"Flexion tolerance low. Pain Gate precursor active at threshold. Repair support minimal but present""No" The rails moved again. Ren's shoulder screamed. Then the scream lowered. Not gone. Lower. His breath steadied despite him. Garaki murmured "There" Ren hated him for hearing it. He hated his body for doing it. He hated that the reduction let him think more clearly. The rails returned his arm to neutral. Ren shook. Sweat ran down his neck. Garaki looked at him.
"Report sensation" Ren stared at the floor.
"No""I can infer""Then work harder" One assistant looked up too fast. Garaki's mouth tightened. Good. The second stressor was grip. That was crueler because it looked smaller. A broad padded bar lowered in front of Ren's left hand. Too large to become a weapon. Too soft to bruise quickly. Too monitored to matter. The restraint loosened just enough for his fingers to close around it. Garaki said "Grip until you cannot""No""If you refuse, we proceed through passive stimulation" Ren looked at him.
"That is not choice""No" At least he knew. The bar touched Ren's palm. For a moment, Daichi was there. Not literally. Grip. stability. load. holding. Ren's hand trembled. Garaki watched the monitor.
"Paternal line response again" Ren's head snapped up.
"Do not talk about him" Garaki's eyes sharpened.
"Stronger response" Ren's fingers closed around the bar before he realized he had done it. Not obedience. Rage. Garaki had known rage could move muscle. The bar registered pressure. Ren squeezed. Pain shot through the left graft site. Pain Suppressor tried to dampen it and failed. Scar Tissue warmed along the palm, old Scar Tension pattern waking around tendon and skin. Regenerative Scaffold did nothing there. Not enough damage. No recruitment. Garaki leaned closer to the data.
"Original function remains dominant in voluntary grip. Graft response minimal" Ren breathed hard. Then slowly released the bar. Not because Garaki told him. Because Aizawa had once spent an entire lesson making him practice release. Stopping is data. Ren almost laughed. The phrase survived captivity. Garaki noticed the clean release.
"Trained inhibition" Ren looked at him.
"No. Trained stopping""Distinction?" Ren's mouth tasted like blood.
"Inhibition is your word. Stopping was mine" The doctor stared at him. Then wrote it down. Ren closed his eyes. Of course. Everything became data. Even ownership. The third stressor was not physical. Garaki dimmed the room and projected a line of text across the far wall. Not an image. No fake voices. No staged room. Just words. THEY WILL COME FASTER IF YOU BREAK SLOWER. Ren stared. For a second, he did not understand. Then he did. Garaki did not need to tell him his friends would come.
He did not need to show them failing. He simply placed responsibility where it could poison survival. If Ren deteriorated, U. A. would rush. If he stayed stable, they had time. If he resisted too well, the room learned. If he broke, maybe someone else broke trying to reach him. All wrong. All hooks. Ren breathed. The grafts stirred with the stress. Pain Suppressor lowered his shoulder pain again. Regenerative Scaffold pulsed around the joint. Scar Tissue warmed. Garaki watched. Ren looked at the words.
Then closed his eyes. No. They would come because he was taken. Not because he performed suffering correctly. They would move because the enemy stole. Not because he owed collapse. Hana's voice in memory: You come back. Daichi: You do not let them steal the choice inside it. Kurose: The boy who made it. Aizawa: He did everything right. Recovery Girl: Ren is surviving them. Shinso: Don't let fake paperwork win. Bakugo: Don't let the machine win. Midoriya: We can be bad at it at the same time. Ren opened his eyes.
The words remained on the wall. He smiled. Small. Feverish. Garaki noticed. Ren said "That is fake paperwork" For one second, Garaki looked genuinely confused. Then Ren laughed. It hurt. He laughed anyway. The monitor spiked in a pattern Garaki did not immediately understand. Good. The words on the wall did not disappear. They mattered less. In the operations room, the old municipal trauma rehabilitation center became the center of the map at 19: 15. Not confirmed. Not enough. Still center.
The evidence accumulated not as proof, but as pressure. Noise complaints. Underground vibration. missing nutrient supplies. old rehab infrastructure. shell ownership. recent generator service. construction permits filed by a company created eleven days before the camp attack. two surveillance cameras around the block replaced yesterday. A truck route that overlapped with the sports rehabilitation center evacuation window. And one more thing. The chemical foam used to purge the second lab was rare.
Industrial, fast-acting, expensive, and difficult to transport. Its waste neutralizer had been ordered in bulk six months earlier by a restoration company contracted to the old trauma center. Power Loader put the line on the board. No one spoke for five seconds. Then Aizawa said "That is the room" Nezu did not correct him. He said "It may be" Aizawa looked at him. Nezu's gaze did not soften.
"If we call it the room too early, we walk like people who need it to be true" Kurose crossed her arms.
"Then we call it the strongest direction" Nezu nodded.
"Accepted" All Might stepped forward.
"I go in" Aizawa said "We go in" Hakamata raised a hand.
"Police perimeter will take time" Aizawa said "Garaki purges sites fast" All Might looked at Nezu.
"If Ren is there, waiting for perfect containment may mean finding another empty frame" Recovery Girl's voice was low.
"And if he is unstable from grafting, a rushed breach may get him killed" The room stopped. That was the line. No one wanted to stand on either side of it. Dr. Seno's remote voice answered carefully.
"If the grafts are in early phase, his body may be in fever, metabolic demand, and unstable pain modulation. Sudden combat, gas, shock waves, or forced movement could trigger Scar Lattice or graft alignment unpredictably. Rescue must prioritize medical stabilization immediately on contact" All Might closed his eyes. Aizawa said "Then we build the breach around that" Nezu looked at him. Aizawa continued "No explosions near target rooms. Erasure ready for hostile Quirks. Recovery team staged with medical equipment.
Present Mic for acoustic mapping. Power Loader for structure. Ectoplasm for scout bodies. Cementoss for controlled containment. Edges sealed before center is forced. We do not break the room. We take the room away from them" All Might looked at Aizawa. Then nodded. Kurose said "And if it is bait?" Aizawa's eyes stayed on the map.
"Then we learn which way the bait points" Nezu was quiet. Then he turned to Hakamata.
"Prepare operation" Recovery Girl stood. This time no one told her to sit.
"I am going" Aizawa began "No" Recovery Girl pointed her cane at him.
"Finish that syllable and I will make you a patient before we leave" Aizawa stopped. Good. All Might said "It may be dangerous" Recovery Girl looked at him like he had insulted medicine.
"He is my patient" No one argued. Kurose said "I am going too" Aizawa did say "No" that time. Kurose looked at him.
"You may tell me why""You are not a combat pro""No. I am the teacher who can tell him where he is when you find him" That hit harder than a tactical argument. Aizawa said nothing. Kurose continued "If he is conscious and thinks the room is still taking answers, he needs a person who has never treated him as data" Recovery Girl said "She is right" Aizawa hated that. It was visible. Nezu said "Kurose joins the medical recovery perimeter, not the breach front" Kurose nodded.
"Accepted" All Might looked at the map. For the first time since the abduction, his stillness changed. Not restraint disappearing. Restraint becoming aim. In the student common room, the rumor arrived before the announcement. It always did. Kaminari looked up from the fixed table board.
"They are moving" Iida stood.
"Confirmed?"
"No" Bakugo was already at the door. Iida moved in front of him again. Bakugo glared. Iida's hands shook. He kept them open. Bakugo said "I know" The room froze. Iida blinked. Bakugo's jaw clenched.
"I know I am not going" Kirishima's face changed.
"Kacchan""Shut up" No heat behind it. Not much. Bakugo looked toward the hallway. His voice was low enough that only the room heard.
"If they find him, he better still be annoying" Uraraka wiped her eyes.
"He will be" Bakugo rounded on her.
"You don't know that" She flinched. Then straightened.
"No. I don't" Bakugo looked away first. Good. Honest. Asui said "We can make the room ready" Shinso's head lifted.
"What?" Asui looked toward the protected wing.
"R-2. If he comes back, it should not look paused from when he left. It should look like people kept it alive" Silence. Then Mina stood.
"I can make another terrible wall sign" Jiro said "Nothing small""Large terrible wall sign" Kaminari pointed.
"Approved emotional vandalism?" Iida looked torn between rules and grief. Then said "We will request authorization" Bakugo muttered "Coward" Iida said "Correct procedure is not cowardice" Bakugo looked at him.
"Make the sign ugly" Mina's eyes filled. Then she smiled.
"Extremely" Shinso stood last.
"What should it say?" No one answered immediately. Then Todoroki said "Fake paperwork lost" Everyone looked at him. He looked back.
"It seemed relevant" Kaminari whispered "That is horrible" Jiro said "It is perfect" Bakugo scoffed.
"Needs more insult" Shinso looked toward the protected wing.
"No. It's stupid enough" They asked permission. For once, every adult said yes quickly. In the lab, Garaki's patience began to thin after the fifth operational test failed to produce stable graft bridge without severe emotional trigger. Physical movement produced partial Pain Gate. Localized injury stress produced Repair Scaffold precursor. Grip activated original Scar Tension more than graft function. Fake responsibility text produced stress but not clean alignment.
Playback memory produced strongest bridge, but too unstable to be safely repeated without risking systemic inflammatory overload. Garaki stood at the console, fingers still. Ren sat in the chair, fevered, shaking, alive. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and overheated electronics. All For One had been silent through the last two tests. That made Garaki more careful. Ren noticed. Good. Not useful yet. Still good.
Garaki said "You resist integration most strongly when you frame the grafts as identity violation" Ren stared at him.
"Stunning discovery" Garaki ignored the tone.
"But when you frame survival as return, the grafts cooperate with Scar Tissue temporarily" Ren hated the word cooperate.
"Not cooperate""What word would you use?" Ren did not answer. Garaki turned fully toward him.
"What word, Akiyama?" Ren closed his eyes. Routes back. Pain was route back. Food was route back. No was route back. Here was route back. They held. The shoulder function had lasted six breaths because he had remembered they held. Not because Garaki forced it. Not because the grafts were his. Because his body had found a way to keep breathing toward people. He opened his eyes.
"Borrowed" Garaki's expression sharpened. Ren continued, voice thin.
"Not mine. Borrowed by Scar Tissue. Under protest" The assistant looked confused. Garaki did not. He looked almost delighted.
"Borrowed function" Ren regretted saying it immediately. Garaki wrote it down. Of course. All For One's voice returned through the speaker.
"A useful compromise" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"No""No?"
"A compromise is chosen" The voice hummed.
"Then a useful interim theft" Ren smiled without humor.
"Closer" Garaki looked between the monitor and Ren.
"Borrowed function under identity rejection. Temporary alignment through return-oriented anchor memory. That may be enough" Ren's blood cooled. Enough for what? The room did not answer. It did not need to. A low alarm sounded from the console. Not emergency. Notification. Garaki's eyes moved to the screen. His face changed. Not panic. Calculation accelerating. Ren's heartbeat jumped. Garaki touched the console. The wall display showed a map Ren could not read from the chair. One point glowed near the edge.
All For One said "How close?" Garaki said "Close enough to matter" The speaker voice became very still.
"Move him" Garaki's mouth tightened.
"Movement now risks destabilizing the graft bridge""Leaving him risks losing the work" Ren's pulse hammered. Work. Not boy. Not subject. Work. Garaki looked at him. For one second, Ren saw the calculation clearly. Move him and risk his body crashing. Keep him and risk rescue. The room had to choose. Good. Fear and hope struck together, too tangled to separate. His scars heated. Pain Suppressor lowered his shoulder pain without being asked. Regenerative Scaffold pulsed. Scar Tissue held both in a narrow line.
Borrowed. Under protest. Ren breathed. He looked at Garaki and smiled. Small. Awful. Alive.
"They found the floor" Garaki's expression hardened. The alarm sounded again. The room began to move. Not physically. People did. Assistants disconnected lines with fast hands. The chair unlocked from the floor. A transport frame rose from beneath it. Wall panels opened. Equipment folded. One assistant prepared a sedative. Ren saw it. His body reacted first. No. Not sleep. Not now. He pulled against the left restraint. Pain. Good. He pressed his fingers down where the chair arm met his palm. Three lines. One base.
The assistant grabbed his wrist. Too late? Maybe. Garaki noticed.
"What did he mark?" The assistant looked.
"Blood. Minimal" Garaki's eyes flicked to Ren. Ren smiled wider.
"Here" For the first time, Garaki looked angry. Really angry. Not because of the blood. Because Ren had made the room less clean. The speaker voice was colder than before.
"Sedate him" Ren's heart slammed. The assistant raised the injector. The ceiling shook. A distant impact rolled through the facility. Not explosion. Controlled breach. The lights flickered. For half a second, every machine in the room hesitated. Ren inhaled. Somewhere beyond the walls, someone hit the building again. The room screamed in alarms. Garaki turned toward the door. Ren closed his eyes and heard nothing clearly. No voices. No names. Only vibration. A route becoming sound.
He whispered "Here" This time, the floor answered.
