Chương 90: The Route of Absence

For three seconds, no one moved. That was how Ren knew the room had understood. Not fully. Not cleanly. Not with every fact arranged into something human beings could survive. But enough. Ragdoll had been there. Then she had not. The north wall still stood. The window seals held. The doors were watched. No alarm had sounded. No glass had broken. No body had crossed the medical route. The safe zone had been listening outward, and something had taken a person from inside the shape of safety.
Absence had become a route. Kurose broke the silence first.
"Full internal lockdown. No one moves alone" Her voice did not rise. That made it louder.
"Thirteen. North wall and service alcove. Shinso. Witness control. Arai. Last visual map. Kenta. Physical route check. Sano. One card only if useful. Yaoyorozu. Continue seals. Todoroki. Maintain medical temperature. Mandalay. Staff status and Ragdoll contact attempts. Aizawa. Lodge possible breach" The orders moved through the hall faster than panic could organize itself. Thirteen crossed to the north side. Their suit made no sound.
Kenta moved low and practical, checking under benches, behind tables, along the floor where a person might have stumbled or been dragged. Arai snatched her dropped paper from the ground and began drawing boxes with shaking precision. Shinso stepped away from the doorway just enough to face the students nearest the missing point.
"Last clear visual. One at a time. No yelling" Several students started speaking anyway. Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"One at a time, or your panic becomes useless noise" They stopped. No Quirk. Just edge. Good. Ren sat in the chair with his hands open on his knees and felt every part of himself trying to leave his skin. High heat. Both palms. Forearms warm. No ridging. No thread. No lattice. No movement. He reported because the report was still the only door he was allowed to open.
"Status red-edge. Heat high. No lattice. No movement. Ragdoll missing from hall. Usefulness pressure extreme" Recovery Girl's voice cut from the tablet.
"Stay seated. Hands visible""They are""Do not turn absence into permission" Ren closed his eyes for half a second. That sentence hurt because it had found the exact shape of the temptation.
"I will not" Kurose looked at him.
"Modified role. You may answer direct questions about pattern if asked. No unsolicited field calls unless new image is direct and safety-actionable""Accepted" The word felt like biting down on metal. Mandalay stood near the center of the hall with one hand pressed to her temple, her face too pale. Kota clung to her sleeve and looked toward the north wall where Ragdoll had been.
Midoriya was in the inner medical room now, barely conscious and under Recovery Girl's remote fury, but every sound from that room dragged the hall's attention toward him. East smoke pressed at the sealed windows. Bakugo was still outside. Group Two was still in danger. Ragdoll was missing. Too many routes. Too many holes. Kurose turned toward Arai.
"Last visual" Arai pointed to the map she was drawing on the back of an unused drill sheet.
"Ragdoll here. North wall. Window list. Sano's air route card placed here. She moved between wall and central table twice. Last confirmed visual by me before static flash" Sano raised one hand.
"I saw her after the card went up" Shinso pointed at him.
"Useful. Say exactly" Sano swallowed.
"She was by the north wall, looking toward the windows. Then static flash. Everyone looked at the monitor. I looked too. When I looked back, she was gone" Kenta called from the north side.
"No blood. No drag marks. No broken seal. No open window. Floor scuff near service alcove" Thirteen moved to the alcove.
"Service alcove door closed but not latched" Kurose's head turned.
"Who opened it?" No one answered. Arai checked her paper.
"Service alcove was not on main route list after seals. It connects to supply shelf and maintenance panel. Not exterior" Thirteen opened the door carefully. Empty shelves. Coiled cords. Emergency cleaning supplies. A maintenance panel on the back wall. Closed. No Ragdoll. No villain. No obvious route. Kenta crouched.
"Small mark on floor" Kurose said "Do not touch" Kenta stopped with his hand an inch above it. Aizawa's voice came through the radio, closer now and sharpened by anger.
"Describe" Kenta leaned lower.
"Round scrape. Tiny. Like something hard rolled or hit the floor" Ren's right palm flared. Object. Hand. Small. A polished sphere. A stage gesture. A body folding away where a person had stood. No name. No certainty. But enough.
"Image fragment. Small object. Sphere or bead. Capture vector may be object-based, not door-based. Direct contact or thrown contact possible. Do not touch unknown small objects. Check floor visually only" Kurose repeated at once.
"Visual check only. No one touches small objects" Thirteen moved their hand away from the alcove threshold. Kenta leaned back. Arai's pencil moved.
"Object route" Sano whispered "Object route" Kurose looked at him. He lowered the card he had started making.
"Not now""Correct" Mandalay's voice shook.
"Ragdoll does not answer" Kota pressed closer to her. Ren looked at the boy and then away. Not his door. The door was in the floor now. Small. Round. Impossible. Aizawa's voice came again.
"I am entering lodge from west side. No one touches anything near north wall. East status?" Mandalay closed her eyes.
"Group Two still at hard boundary. Pixie-Bob closing distance. Hostiles adjusting. Capture pressure persists" Capture pressure. Ragdoll missing. Object vector. Bakugo target. The pieces did not become a full picture. They became a warning. Ren's heat held high. No lattice.
"Question" he said Kurose looked at him.
"Ask""If Ragdoll was taken by object-contact capture, same method may be used on Bakugo. Have Group Two been warned specifically about small objects, thrown items, and hand contact?" Kurose did not hesitate.
"Mandalay. Transmit" Mandalay's eyes closed hard.
"Group Two. New warning. Capture vector may involve small held or thrown object. Avoid unknown objects, thrown items, and direct hand contact. Maintain hard boundary. Do not catch anything" Ren added before it became too much.
"Do not catch anything" Kurose nodded.
"Good compression" Recovery Girl said "That counts as one new direct safety call""One" The hall held its breath again, but now breath had work to do. Thirteen marked the north alcove off with a chair, tape, and one of Yaoyorozu's created warning strips. Kenta placed himself near it, not touching, guarding the absence like it might widen if ignored. Arai added object route to the list. AIR DOOR WINDOW FEAR OBJECT The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
ABSENCE She stared at the list. Then underlined OBJECT twice. Shinso directed witness statements. No one had seen a villain. Two students had seen the static flash. One had heard a soft click. Kota spoke suddenly.
"I heard it too" The room went very still. Mandalay looked down at him.
"Kota?" He did not look at her. His eyes were on the north wall.
"A click. Like a marble hitting wood" Ren's palms burned. No ridges. Marble. Not the word as name. As object. Kurose said gently "Where?" Kota pointed.
"Near that small door" The service alcove. Thirteen marked the spot on the floor. No one touched it. Kota's mouth twisted.
"She was there and then she wasn't" Mandalay's face broke for half a second. Only half. Then she became staff again.
"Thank you" Kota looked away.
"I didn't help fast enough" The sentence entered the room like a second missing person. Ren's chest tightened. No heat spike. Just hurt. Kurose spoke before anyone else could try to soften it badly.
"You reported what you knew when asked. That is help" Kota looked at her with wet, furious eyes.
"It's not enough" Kurose did not lie.
"No. It is not enough to bring her back right now. It is enough to make the next minute safer" Kota stared. Ren saw the words hit him. Not comfort. A route. Good. Terrible. In the east smoke, the warning arrived as a voice inside Bakugo's skull, and it sounded exactly like more people trying to tell him not to be an idiot. Small object. Do not catch. Avoid hand contact. Bakugo blasted a line through smoke and shouted "Who the hell catches things in a fight?" Sero coughed behind him.
"You threw a rock at Todoroki during training and caught it yourself when it bounced""That was tactical!" Kaminari, eyes watering, rasped "Do not catch tactical rocks" Kirishima, back to the stone boundary, barked "Count!"
"Kirishima here!"
"Sero here!"
"Kaminari here!" Bakugo shifted along the rock and answered last.
"Here!" Something small glittered through the smoke. A bead? A marble? A trick of light? It came fast, not at Bakugo's chest but at his hand, as if expecting instinct to close fingers around threat or insult. Bakugo's palm opened to blast it. Then the warning hit again. Do not catch. He changed the blast angle by a fraction and fired beside it, not into it. The shockwave knocked the object away without touching his skin. It struck a tree and vanished into smoke with a tiny click. A laugh answered. Smooth. Amused.
"Sharp boy" Bakugo's teeth bared.
"You missed""For now" The smoke shifted. Two shapes moved at once. One low. One high. Kirishima stepped into the low line and hardened. The impact rang against his shoulder. Sero fired tape at the high shape and pulled, but the tape came back empty with a small round object stuck to the end.
"Sero!" Kirishima shouted"Don't touch it!" Kaminari yelled Sero froze. The object clicked. For one horrific second, his hand began to close around the tape. Bakugo blasted the tape itself apart. Sero yelped as the shockwave knocked him back, but the small object flew free and struck the ground. Nothing happened. Or something almost did and failed. Bakugo landed between Sero and the smoke.
"Stop grabbing crap!" Sero coughed.
"You blew up my tape!"
"Say thanks!"
"Thanks, you psycho!"
"Count!"
"Kirishima here!"
"Sero here!"
"Kaminari here!" Bakugo moved.
"Here!" The masked performer in the smoke did not laugh this time. Good. Bakugo liked that. The lodge received the update in pieces. Thrown object avoided. Tape object destroyed. No capture. Group Two still together. Ren's heat dropped from high to high-moderate. He reported it.
"Heat decreasing after object warning success. No new image. No movement" Recovery Girl said "Good. No more calls" Ren almost said unless. He did not.
"Accepted" Kurose looked at Arai.
"Object route warning becomes lodge protocol" Arai nodded and wrote. UNKNOWN OBJECTSNO TOUCHNO CATCHNO KICKMARK AND AVOIDSTAFF ONLY Sano stared at the list, trembling. Then asked "Card?" Kurose's eyes flicked toward him.
"One" He wrote slowly, with both hands. NO HEROIC TOUCHING For one second, the room almost laughed. Almost. Kurose looked at the card.
"Approved" Sano looked like he might cry. Aizawa entered the hall through the west door three minutes later. Smoke clung to his scarf. His hair looked wilder than usual, which should have been impossible. His eyes moved across the hall, counted, assessed, landed on the north alcove, then on Ren, then on Mandalay.
"Report" Kurose gave it in fragments. Ragdoll last seen north wall. Static flash. Service alcove unlatched. Round scrape. Soft click heard by Kota and Sano. Object-contact capture suspected. Ragdoll missing. No breach visible. Object warning transmitted to Group Two and prevented at least two contact attempts. Aizawa's face became very still.
"Ragdoll's Search is off the board" Mandalay flinched. No one corrected the phrase. Off the board. Not dead. Not safe. Off the board. Ren felt the map of the camp dim in his mind. Ragdoll's Quirk had been one of their greatest tools, even if he had not fully understood its range. Search meant finding people. Missing students. Hostiles. Paths. Losing her did not only hurt because she was a person, though that would have been enough. It hurt the route. He reported.
"Yellow-red. Ragdoll Search loss understood as map degradation. No heat spike. Action?" Aizawa looked at him. No softness. Good.
"Build poorer map honestly" Ren blinked. Aizawa must have seen the thought on his face. Or perhaps all their teachers were becoming unbearable. Kurose wrote the sentence. Mandalay inhaled once. Then nodded.
"Manual counts. Visual confirmation. Staff relays. No reliance on Search" Aizawa turned to Shinso.
"Witness control status" Shinso straightened.
"Six statements. Two click reports. One static flash visual. No one saw a person enter or exit. Panic contained. One authorized Quirk use earlier. No current movement pressure at doorway" Aizawa looked at him.
"Good" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Yes sir" Aizawa's eyes moved to Ren.
"Status""High-moderate heat. No ridging. No lattice. One object warning call used. No movement. At limit""Stay at limit""Yes" That should have been the end of Ren's active role for the minute. It was not. Because Kota spoke again.
"Can't you find her?" The question was not directed at Mandalay. Not at Aizawa. At Ren. His small face was pale under anger.
"You knew about the smoke. You knew about the ball thing. Can't you find her?" Mandalay said "Kota" But the boy did not look away. Ren's throat tightened. This was the trap wearing a child's voice. If he said yes, he lied. If he said no, he failed the shape of hope. If he explained too much, he made Kota carry things no child should carry. He chose the smallest true route.
"No" Kota stared. Ren's hands stayed open.
"I can sometimes notice patterns. I cannot choose what comes. I do not know where she is" Kota's face twisted.
"Then what good is it?" The hall went silent. Ren felt the old wound open without heat. Quirkless. Weak. Conditional. Safe zone. Flag three. What good is it? He breathed.
"Not enough" Kota flinched as if the answer had struck differently than expected. Ren continued "But not enough is still something if it makes the next capture harder" Kota's eyes filled. He looked furious about that too.
"Heroes always say something is better than nothing" Ren said "Sometimes nothing is all they had before" Kota looked away first. Mandalay knelt beside him. This time, when she touched his shoulder, he did not pull away. Aizawa watched Ren for one second longer. Then turned toward the east map.
"Group Two extraction" Mandalay focused.
"Pixie-Bob has visual range. Earth barrier forming. Group Two moving along hard boundary toward east service route. Hostiles retreating and re-engaging. Capture pressure remains" Aizawa spoke into the radio.
"Bakugo does not break line. Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari maintain. Pixie-Bob controls terrain. Do not pursue" Bakugo's voice came back through static.
"Stop saying it!" Kirishima shouted "Then stop looking like you want to!"
"I always look like that!" Sero coughed "True!" Even through smoke and fear, the room caught the shape of them still being themselves. Small relief. Dangerous relief. Ren reported.
"Group Two voices stable. Heat moderate. No image" Recovery Girl said "Water again" He drank. No argument. The east extraction took too long. Everything took too long when people might vanish in the space between counts. Kirishima here. Sero here. Kaminari here. Bakugo here. Pixie-Bob's earth walls rose and collapsed, rose and collapsed, not to trap the attackers but to deny clean lines. The masked performer attempted one more throw. Bakugo blasted near it before it crossed the route.
Sero stopped grabbing anything not already his. Kaminari kept low bursts between trees. Kirishima became moving stone at Bakugo's shoulder. They did not win. They did not lose him. That was the metric. At last, Mandalay's voice changed.
"Group Two reached east service route. Pixie-Bob with them. Bakugo visible. All four visible. Irritant exposure present. Minor to moderate injuries. Moving to lodge" The main hall did not cheer. No one had enough foolishness left for that. But air returned. Ren's palms cooled to warm.
"Heat decreasing. Group Two visible. No new image. No movement" Kurose wrote. Aizawa's shoulders lowered by something too small to call relief. Then his radio crackled again. Tiger's voice.
"West hostiles still active. Aizawa, I need you outside" Aizawa looked at the hall. At the north alcove. At Midoriya's medical room. At Ren. At Kurose. Kurose said "I have internal" He nodded.
"Thirteen?"
"Perimeter held" Thirteen said"Shinso?"
"Doorway held" Aizawa's eyes narrowed at the answer, but he accepted it.
"Do not use Quirk unless authorized""I know" Aizawa left again. The hall felt worse without him. Then better because Kurose did not move. Internal still had a spine. Group Two arrived through the east door under Pixie-Bob's earth-smeared fury. Kirishima first, bleeding and grinning like that was a moral obligation. Sero next, coughing, tape burned and torn. Kaminari stumbled in with eyes red from irritant and one hand sparking weakly against his will. Bakugo came last. Still visible. Still upright.
Still angry enough to scare smoke. His uniform was scorched and gray with ash. A cut ran along one cheek. His eyes found the room, then the medical space, then Ren in the chair. For once, he did not shout immediately. Kurose pointed.
"Decontam line. Medical check. No arguments" Bakugo's mouth opened. Pixie-Bob's hand landed on his shoulder.
"No arguments, angry kitten" Bakugo's entire body vibrated with fury. Kirishima, hoarse, said "Dude. Later" Bakugo's jaw snapped shut. Miracle number two. He stepped into the decontam path. As he passed Ren, he stopped. The hall noticed. Ren looked up. Bakugo's eyes were bright and furious and alive.
"That marble crap" Ren nodded.
"Object route" Bakugo's lip curled.
"You saw it?"
"Low-confidence fragment. Enough to warn" Bakugo stared. Then looked away.
"Tch. It helped" The words were almost too low to hear. But the hall had become trained to listen. Kaminari whispered "Historic" Bakugo turned his head slowly. Kaminari shut up. Ren answered carefully.
"Good" Bakugo glared back at him.
"Don't make it weird""It already is" Kirishima laughed once and then coughed hard enough that medical staff pulled him away. Sero muttered "He said thanks in Bakugo" Kaminari nodded gravely. Then nearly fell over. The shelter route absorbed them. Arai added four names to visible inside. Kenta cleared a bench. Yaoyorozu handed cloth. Todoroki cooled the decontam area. Shinso kept the door clear. Sano placed the no heroic touching card where Group Two could see it. Bakugo saw it.
"What the hell is that?" Sano pointed weakly at Ren.
"Protocol" Ren said "Not mine" Arai said "Partly yours" Kurose said "Focus" The room focused. For almost one minute, every known student inside the lodge was accounted for except those confirmed with staff outside. Ragdoll remained missing. Several hostiles remained active. The attack was not over. But Bakugo was inside. Midoriya was alive. Kota was inside. Group Two had not been taken. Not victory. Route.
Ren wrote no chart because his hands were still warm and he was still under restriction, but the sentence formed anyway. We did not win. We denied the clean moment. That was the whole day so far. Deny the clean moment. Deny the enemy the one breath where fear turned into a door. Then, from the far side of the hall, near the north alcove, something clicked. Small. Clear. Like a marble touching wood. Every head turned. No one moved. Good. Ren's palms flared high. Kurose lifted one hand.
"Still" The hall obeyed. On the floor just outside the taped alcove, a tiny polished sphere rolled once, slowly, though no one had touched it. Inside it, something red reflected the hall light. Not blood. A color. A mark. A signal? Ren's vision tunneled. Image. Hand. Pocket. Stage mask. A voice amused by routes. A second target, not loud like Bakugo. Quiet. Seated. Hot hands open on his knees. Blue tag. Structural-response subject. Ren's breath stopped. The fragment settled with horrible clarity. Not Bakugo.
Not now. Him.
"Status red. New direct fragment. Object route inside shelter. Second target association confirmed. Not public target. Me" The hall went silent. The sphere clicked again. Then vanished. Not by rolling. By being gone. Kurose moved between Ren and the alcove. Shinso stepped from the doorway. Todoroki's hand lifted. Bakugo, half-decontaminated and furious, turned toward the north wall. Ren's hands burned. No lattice. Not yet. The safe zone had denied one clean moment. The enemy had found another.
