Chương 108: The Map Without Search

U. A. had lost the easiest way to find a missing person before Ren was ever taken. That was the part everyone understood too late. Search would have turned grief into direction. Not comfort. Not safety. Not rescue by itself. But direction. A name. A point. A thread.
Something to pull when the world became too large and every abandoned clinic, basement, storage facility, private laboratory, shell company, back-alley surgery room, and Nomu rumor began looking like the place where a stolen student might be breathing or might already have stopped. Ragdoll should have been in the room. She should have been standing beside Mandalay, hair messy from sleeplessness, eyes bright with strain, saying something sharp and useful while her Quirk did what panic could not.
She should have looked once and said there. She should have turned every search grid into a route and every route into movement. Instead, her name was on the same board as Ren's. Captured. Missing. Alive unknown, but presumed recoverable until evidence proved otherwise. Nezu had written the wording himself. Mandalay had read it once and then left the room before anyone could see her face collapse. Now U. A. searched without Search. The command room was not one room anymore. It had spread.
Maps filled the wall in the emergency operations center. Screens lined the security office. Police feeds ran in another wing. Ectoplasm had three clones sorting building permits with Power Loader. Cementoss was reconstructing likely underground structures from old zoning records. Hakamata coordinated with police cyber units. Present Mic had gone quiet in a way that made the air feel wrong around him. Aizawa stood at the central map and looked like a man trying to erase distance through hatred.
Kurose stood beside him with Ren's route file, Garaki probability notes, and a list of every medical shell company U. A. could legally and illegally remember before Nezu corrected the phrasing to "creatively law-adjacent" Recovery Girl sat because two teachers and one nurse had forced the issue. Her cane lay across her knees. Anyone who mistook that for rest was unlikely to survive the correction. All Might stood in hero form near the back, too large for the room and too still for the people inside it.
Hana and Daichi were not in the command room. That was both mercy and cruelty. They had been given a secured family room two doors away with a direct update line, Bentaro, two chairs, one table, and no promises that could not survive truth. Hana had asked for work. Kurose had given her the approved personal continuity list for R-2 because if Hana did not have something to guard, she would start guarding the universe. Daichi had asked for the route files. Aizawa had said no.
Daichi had looked at him for three seconds and said "Then give me the version that does not help me do something stupid" Aizawa had given him the family-facing version. That was the kind of day it was. No one was allowed to be useless, but everyone had to be stopped from becoming useful in the wrong direction. Nezu looked at the main board.
"List the constraints again" Hakamata did not sigh. That meant he wanted to.
"Garaki-associated or Garaki-compatible infrastructure. Medical-grade power supply. biological storage capacity. isolation from civilian observation. room for warp ingress or hidden access. access to fluid disposal. internal shielding or basement depth. connection to shell medical companies. possible link to pediatric Quirk diagnostics. possible Nomu logistics.
possible route from known League movement" Ectoplasm clone two added from the corner "Properties abandoned after Quirk regulation audits" Power Loader said "And structures with illegal sub-basement expansions hidden under renovation permits" Present Mic, voice low, said "And places loud enough to hide machines" Everyone looked at him. He did not smile.
"Industrial zones. rail-adjacent clinics. old underground treatment centers. Anything with background vibration. If you are running equipment and someone screams, neighbors need a reason not to hear it" The room went silent. Then Nezu nodded.
"Add it" Kurose wrote it down. Aizawa's jaw worked once. No one said Ren's name. They did not need to. His name was the shape of the silence. All Might stepped closer to the map.
"Can we narrow by warp signature?" Hakamata shook his head.
"Not enough. The extraction distorted the room but did not leave a stable trail. Erasure interrupted part of the warp. That may have damaged their precision, but it also dirtied the trace" Aizawa's eyes did not move from the board.
"I broke line of sight for less than a second" Recovery Girl's voice snapped across the room.
"You are not doing this" Aizawa did not look at her.
"He was in front of me""And now he is not, which means you find him instead of carving yourself open in public" Aizawa finally turned. His eyes were bloodshot. Recovery Girl held his gaze.
"If guilt found children, we would already be done" The room breathed around that. Kurose looked down at the files. Then said "Garaki used the correct scan, not the fake route. He wanted the medical window. The false notification was a probe. The real scan was the door" Hana's sentence from the guardian room returned in several faces. He wanted to understand his body. That was not the wrong door. Kurose heard it too.
She continued "So we stop treating the scan as a mistake and treat it as bait the enemy could not resist. What did the scan offer that Garaki needed immediately?" Power Loader answered first.
"Baseline tissue data" Recovery Girl said "Active response under stress" Dr. Seno's voice came through the side speaker, remote from medical review.
"Connective tissue architecture. autonomic response. scar boundary formation. vascular recruitment. Quirk factor receptivity" All Might's face darkened.
"Receptivity" Dr. Seno's voice faltered. Then steadied.
"Yes. If his hypothesis concerns graft compatibility, the scan would have confirmed where to introduce factors with the least immediate rejection" No one moved. Kurose's hands closed around the folder. Aizawa said "He took Ren to graft something" Recovery Girl's cane struck the floor. Not hard enough to break it. Hard enough that every person in the room felt it. Nezu closed his eyes for one second. When he opened them, the softness was gone.
"Then we adjust the search priority. Facilities with stored Quirk factors. not merely medical equipment" Hakamata was already moving.
"Adding biological archive capacity. cryostorage. illegal Quirk-factor preservation. Nomu production chain" All Might's voice became quiet.
"Doctor Garaki" Nezu nodded.
"Yes" Present Mic whispered "We find the labs" Aizawa looked at him. Present Mic looked back, eyes too clear and too tired.
"Not lab. Labs" The plural entered the room and stayed. In the laboratory, Ren learned that silence could also be manufactured. The room dimmed after the second phase, but not to darkness. Darkness would have given him somewhere to hide inside himself. Instead, the lights softened to a pale clinical gray. Enough to see the ceiling. Enough to see the machines. Enough to see his hands if he turned his head. Enough to never forget where he was. They had unstrapped his chest. Not his wrists. Not his ankles.
The doctor had said the reduced restraint would lower systemic stress and improve integration observation. Ren had almost laughed at the idea that part of him being less restrained counted as a variable rather than mercy. Then he had decided not to give the doctor even that sound. His left arm hurt around the first graft site. His right shoulder hurt in a way that came and went, which was worse than constant pain because the absence kept making him flinch. Pain Suppressor misfired in patches.
A section of forearm would go quiet. Then his ribs. Then his right wrist. Then everything would return at once, angry at being delayed. Regenerative Scaffold was uglier. It did not heal him. It recruited him. That was how it felt. Like every cell near the damaged areas received orders written by someone else. Build. stabilize. supply. repair. consume. His body answered because bodies wanted to live even when the command was stolen. Fever rose and fell. Hunger gnawed. Sweat dried cold on his skin.
Scar Tissue worked around both grafts, forming boundaries that did not reject them and did not welcome them. Containment. The doctor had used that word. Ren held onto it. Containment was not acceptance. A machine beside him clicked. Ren turned his head enough to see the doctor reviewing a layered image of his left arm. Pale lines on the monitor showed scar boundary tissue around the injection path. Other colors moved through the deeper layers. The doctor noticed him looking.
"Do you want to see?"
"No""You looked""Looking is not wanting" The doctor paused. Then nodded as if Ren had given him something useful.
"I will remember that distinction""I wish you wouldn't" A faint smile.
"Understandable" Ren stared at the ceiling. The doctor moved closer. He had changed gloves. Clean. Careful. Always careful. If Ren lived through this, he thought he might hate careful hands forever.
"Your original Quirk is far more elegant than the early records suggested" Ren said nothing.
"Scar Tissue is not merely adaptive scarring. That was your school's first simplification. Necessary, perhaps. But incomplete. It functions as a biological interpretation system. Injury becomes language. Structural stress becomes memory. Memory becomes architecture" Ren kept his face blank. The doctor watched him.
"You disagree?" Ren breathed through his nose.
"I do not care if you are right" That one pleased the doctor less. Good. He continued anyway.
"The grafts are not integrating yet. Pain modulation remains foreign, but your Quirk has isolated it without necrosis. Regenerative Scaffold is being surrounded by boundary tissue and limited recruitment channels. Your body is not allowing full diffusion. It is not rejecting them either. It is evaluating" Ren closed his eyes. Not evaluating. Surviving. The doctor said "I wonder whether that is conscious" Ren opened his eyes.
"No""Are you sure?"
"My Quirk is not a person""No. But bodies decide many things before minds approve" Ren's throat tightened. He hated that because it was true enough to be dangerous. The doctor came closer.
"Tell me when the pain disappears""No""I can see some of it on the monitor""Then watch your machines""I want the subjective report""No" The doctor studied him.
"Refusing me data does not undo the grafts""No""Refusing words does not make you freer" This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Ren turned his head toward him.
"It makes the theft less convenient" The doctor's expression changed. Small. Sharper. Then the speaker in the ceiling came alive.
"A useful principle" Ren's whole body tensed. The doctor looked upward. The voice continued "Inconvenience is a form of resistance available even to restrained people" Ren did not answer. All For One was amused again. Ren could feel it in the shape of the silence after each word.
"Has the boy asked after his rescuers?" The doctor said "No" The voice hummed softly.
"Interesting" Ren stared at the ceiling. Do not ask. If he asked, they would use the question. They would know which absence hurt most. They probably knew already, but knowing and being offered were different things. All For One said "You want to know if they are alive" Ren said nothing.
"You want to know if the old healer's hand broke when she held you" His breath caught. Small. Too small to hide from the monitors. The doctor glanced at the screen. Ren hated himself for that. The voice softened.
"Ah" Ren forced the words out.
"You do not know" The speaker was silent. Ren breathed.
"You are fishing" The doctor looked at him with new interest. The voice laughed quietly.
"Very good" Ren's heart hammered. He had won nothing. But he had caught the hook before swallowing it. All For One said "They were alive when you left" Ren closed his eyes. That was not comfort. It was bait wearing comfort. Still, something in him nearly broke around it. Alive when you left. Kurose screaming. Aizawa lunging. Recovery Girl holding his shoulder. Alive then. The voice continued "What they are now depends on what they choose" Ren opened his eyes. There it was. Pressure.
"Do not make their choices my restraint""No?"
"No" The word was hoarse, but clear. All For One's voice turned almost approving.
"Garaki, I see why you wanted him" The doctor did not answer. Ren did not like the name landing in the room. Garaki. Now the doctor had a name. A fragment stirred. Old clinic. old face. impossible age. a diagnosis that should not belong to this life and yet did, because canon memory leaked in the wrong places. Kyudai Garaki. Ren refused to say it. Names were hooks in both directions. The doctor smiled as if he knew Ren had recognized something. Maybe he did. Maybe the monitors had told him.
Maybe monsters guessed well. Garaki turned back to the machines.
"Prepare nutrition support. The scaffold is consuming too quickly" An assistant moved. Ren said "Do not" Garaki looked at him.
"You will crash without it""Then say why you care" The doctor paused. Ren's voice shook, but he held it.
"Say data first. Say it" The assistant stopped. All For One was quiet. Garaki looked down at Ren, and for the first time there was something like impatience behind the carefulness.
"Data first" Ren held his gaze.
"And?" Garaki's jaw tightened.
"Subject survival second""Boy third?" The room went still. Garaki did not answer fast enough. Ren smiled. It hurt his split lip.
"That is the order" The doctor's face went blank. Not empty. Blank. A mask put back on.
"Administer support" The assistant moved again. Ren turned his head away when the broad feeding port connected to a line at his left arm. Warmth entered slowly, thick with nutrients his body wanted desperately. He hated that his stomach unclenched. Hated that the fever eased by one degree. Hated that the Regenerative Scaffold took the support and used it. For return, he told himself. Water was route back. Food was route back. Even stolen support could become route back if he lived long enough to leave.
That did not make it approval. At U. A., the first real lead came from an absence in a tax record. Power Loader found it at 14: 20. A pediatric Quirk diagnostics clinic registered under a shell group that had changed names four times in twenty years, closed on paper twelve years ago, then continued drawing irregular maintenance power through a utility account attached to a neighboring storage facility. The clinic building had been demolished. The storage facility remained. Under it, old city plans showed nothing.
Newer utility maps showed reinforced electrical draw below ground. Cementoss looked at the overlay and said "There is a sub-basement that does not exist" Present Mic leaned over the map.
"How big?" Power Loader adjusted the projection.
"Large enough for storage or a small lab. Not enough for a Nomu production site. Maybe archive. maybe transfer node" Aizawa was already moving. Nezu said "Wait" The word cracked like a whip because it was quiet and everyone obeyed. Aizawa stopped. Barely. Nezu studied the map.
"It may be bait" Aizawa said "Everything may be bait""Yes""Then we eventually step on one""Not blindly" All Might moved closer.
"I can scout" Nezu shook his head.
"If the location is watched, your movement announces value" All Might's jaw tightened. He knew. He hated knowing. Kurose looked at the utility records.
"Could it connect to other sites?" Power Loader nodded.
"Possibly through old service tunnels. Not clean. But if someone modified them…" Hakamata said "Police can secure perimeter" Aizawa said "Too slow" Nezu looked at him. Aizawa's eyes were flat.
"Slow gives them time to clear it. Fast announces us. Choose which failure we prefer" No one liked that because it was correct. Recovery Girl stood.
"Do not send children" Everyone looked at her. She glared back.
"Apparently that sentence now needs saying in every room" Nezu nodded.
"No students" Kurose said "What about Ectoplasm clones?" Ectoplasm himself, not a clone this time, adjusted his tie.
"Already available" Present Mic said "I can listen from outside" Power Loader said "I can identify recent structural alteration from entry" All Might said "And if it is not empty?" Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"Then we take it" Nezu's eyes remained on the non-existent sub-basement.
"Teams of adults. quiet approach. no broadcast movement. no one enters alone. if warp signature appears, retreat and mark. We are looking for a route, not proving courage" Aizawa looked like he might argue. Kurose spoke before he could.
"Ren does not need anyone else disappearing into a basement because the room hurt their pride" Aizawa's mouth closed. Good. No one called it good. At 15: 05, the first adult search team left U. A. without sirens. At 15: 07, Bakugo noticed. No one knew how. He appeared in the protected common room doorway like anger had learned teleportation.
"Where are they going?" Iida stood from the table.
"Bakugo, we were instructed not to interfere""I didn't ask you" Kirishima moved beside him.
"Kacchan""Don't" Sero said "You don't even know who went" Bakugo's eyes were sharp enough to cut.
"Aizawa's not in the building" Silence. Jiro looked away. Kaminari whispered "How does he know that?" Todoroki said "The hallway got less judgmental" Everyone stared at him. He looked back.
"What?" Bakugo took one step forward.
"I'm going" Iida blocked him. No hesitation. This time it was not Kirishima. It was Iida, spine straight, face pale, hands trembling but open.
"No" Bakugo's eyes flared.
"Move, four-eyes""No""This isn't your damn call""It is not yours either" Bakugo's hands sparked. Iida did not move. His voice shook. That made it stronger somehow.
"I know what it is to want to run after a villain because standing still feels like betrayal" The room changed. Stain. Ingenium. The word no one said. Bakugo's glare faltered by a fraction. Iida stepped closer.
"If you go now, you are not rescuing him. You are obeying the part of pain that wants motion" Bakugo's teeth clenched.
"Don't lecture me""I am not lecturing you. I am standing in front of you" Asui moved beside Iida. Then Uraraka. Then Kirishima. Then Sero. Then Jiro. Then Kaminari, looking terrified but there. Todoroki stood last, quietly, like a wall becoming colder. Shinso watched from the side of the room, arms folded. Bakugo looked at all of them. His voice went low.
"You planning to hold me every time?" Kirishima said "If that's what it takes" Bakugo turned on him.
"I'm not fragile" Kirishima's face tightened.
"No. You're scared" For a second, it seemed like Bakugo might actually hit him. Then he looked away. The sparks died. Not fully. Enough. Shinso spoke from the side.
"Akiyama would be annoying about this" Bakugo's head snapped toward him. Shinso continued "He'd say something like becoming a second rescue route failure does not improve the map and then everyone would want to throw a chair at him" Kaminari said weakly "Fixed chairs only" No one laughed. Bakugo stared at Shinso. Then muttered "He would say it worse" Ren's absence moved through the room. Uraraka wiped her eyes with her sleeve.
"Yes" Bakugo turned and punched the approved wall pad once. Not to leave. To stay. The sound echoed. No one stopped him. In the lab, Ren saw the first crack in Garaki's composure when an assistant entered too quickly. The door opened from the hidden side panel, not the visible door. Ren noted it despite fever. The assistant leaned close to Garaki and whispered. Garaki's face did not change much. But his hand paused above the monitor. All For One's voice emerged from the speaker.
"What happened?" Garaki looked at Ren. Then away.
"One archive node has been approached" Ren's pulse jumped. He tried to hide it. The monitor betrayed him. Garaki glanced at the screen.
"Hope response" Ren smiled weakly.
"Fishing?" Garaki did not answer. All For One's voice held amusement and irritation in equal measure.
"Which node?"
"Old diagnostics storage""Does it matter?"
"Not for this subject directly" Subject. Ren stored the wording. Not directly. That meant something there mattered indirectly. Quirk factors. data. records. routes. Maybe Ragdoll. No. Do not assume. Garaki moved to another console.
"Purge remote index. Seal lower archive. Leave disposable trail" Ren turned his head.
"Scared?" Garaki looked at him.
"No""You moved fast""Speed is not fear""That sounds like something afraid people say efficiently" For a moment, the assistant looked like Ren had slapped the room. Garaki's eyes sharpened.
"You are becoming bolder under restraint" Ren's voice was thin.
"You hate wasting specimens through crude manipulation. I hate wasting chances to annoy you" All For One laughed. A real laugh this time. Soft. Awful. Garaki turned back to the console. Ren's fevered mind grabbed at the words. Old diagnostics storage. Remote index. Lower archive. Disposable trail. Not directly. He did not know how to send information. He had no route out. But memory was still his. He repeated the phrases silently. Old diagnostics storage. Remote index. Lower archive. Disposable trail. Not directly.
Pain flickered off in his right shoulder for two seconds. He almost lost the words. Then pain returned, and with it, clarity sharp enough to cut. Old diagnostics storage. The first search site was empty. Not useless. Empty. Ectoplasm's clones entered first, moving through a building that smelled like dust, damp concrete, and old power. Present Mic waited outside with one hand to the wall, listening. Power Loader inspected the entry seams.
Aizawa stood near the rear access with two pro heroes and enough rage to qualify as structural support. No children. No sirens. No shouting. The storage facility was half abandoned above ground, filled with old medical furniture, cracked examination tables, broken refrigeration units, and boxes of outdated diagnostic equipment. Beneath it, behind a wall that should have been solid, Cementoss opened the hidden sub-basement. It contained no people. No Ren. No Ragdoll. No Garaki.
It contained empty cryo racks, smashed drives, one still-warm disposal unit, and a row of labeled shelves that had been burned with acid from the inside. Power Loader stood in the lower room and swore. Present Mic's voice came through comms from above.
"Anything?" Aizawa crouched beside the warm disposal unit.
"Cleared in a hurry" Ectoplasm clone three held up a melted label plate with tongs. The text was half gone. Only three fragments remained. PED-QFARCHIVE NODE 04SHOCK— Power Loader leaned closer.
"Shock?" Aizawa looked at the plate. His eyes narrowed.
"Photograph it. Bag it. Everything" Ectoplasm clone one said "There is more" At the far wall, behind the acid-burned shelves, a small panel had been left intact. Not overlooked. Left. Aizawa hated it immediately. Power Loader scanned it.
"No explosive signature. No active transmitter. It is a physical plate" Aizawa stepped closer. The plate had a symbol scratched into it. Not the League. Not All For One. A doctor's joke, maybe. A small cartoon scar drawn around a keyhole. Beneath it, one sentence. THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING WHICH CHILD YOU VALUE MOST. Aizawa's scarf lifted. Present Mic's voice through the comm turned cold.
"Shota?" Aizawa ripped the plate from the wall.
"Trail is bait" Power Loader said "Yes. But the archive was real" Aizawa looked at the melted label. PED-QF. Archive Node 04. Shock— Real bait. Useful bait. The worst kind. Back at U. A., Nezu read the field report in silence. Archive node. Shock fragment. Cleared in hurry. No bodies. No students. No pro hero. Message left. Kurose stood behind him.
"Shock could be a Quirk factor type" Dr. Seno, remote again, sounded tense.
"Shock absorption. shock buffering. neurological shock resistance. trauma response dampening. It could mean many things" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Garaki had pediatric Quirk-factor archives" Nezu looked at the label photo.
"Yes" All Might's voice was low.
"And one may have involved shock" Kurose's face changed. Not hope. Recognition of a future problem arriving too early.
"Ren's body just became proof that compatible grafts can work" Recovery Girl slammed her cane once.
"Do not even begin that sentence""I am not proposing anything" Kurose said"No. You are seeing the road. I hate the road" Nezu looked at the scar-keyhole drawing.
"Garaki wants us to see it" Aizawa's voice came through the call from the site.
"Then we look without walking where he points" Kurose looked at the screen.
"How?" Aizawa held up the melted label.
"By treating every bait like evidence and every evidence like bait" Present Mic said "That is the worst motto we have ever had" Recovery Girl said "It may be the most accurate" The lab night ended with another scan. Not a graft. Observation after forced implantation. Ren's fever had stabilized at a level Recovery Girl would have called unacceptable and Garaki called informative. Pain Suppressor remained erratic.
Regenerative Scaffold continued low-level recruitment around the right shoulder, left injection site, and older scar channels. Scar Tissue had built thin boundary lines around both factors. Containment. Still containment. Ren clung to that word like a wall. Garaki reviewed the results near the foot of the frame. All For One had gone quiet after the archive node report. That did not mean gone. Ren had learned to feel the attention behind the speaker even when it did not speak. Garaki looked tired now.
Not morally tired. Scientifically tired. The kind of tired that came from too many answers breeding too many questions. Ren opened his eyes.
"Archive node four" Garaki went still. Very still. Ren smiled through fever.
"Shock" The doctor turned slowly.
"How interesting" Ren's voice was barely more than air.
"Fishing" Garaki stepped closer.
"You should not have been able to hold that through the fever" Ren swallowed.
"My pain came back" Garaki's eyes narrowed.
"Pain as memory anchor" Ren closed his eyes. Damn it. Too much again. Then he opened them because hiding had never stopped the room from taking.
"They found it" Garaki's mouth curved.
"They found a room""They made you purge it""Did they?"
"You moved fast" Garaki looked at him for a long moment. Then said "Yes" A real answer. Small no. Small yes. Small data in both directions. Ren breathed. The ceiling blurred. Garaki asked "Does that comfort you?" Ren thought of Aizawa in a burned archive. Kurose reading melted labels. Nezu understanding bait. Recovery Girl hating the road. All Might forced to wait. Hana keeping R-2 ready. Daichi insisting the room remain Ren's. Shinso telling everyone not to let fake paperwork win. Bakugo punching a wall to stay.
Did it comfort him? No. Comfort was too soft. It gave him direction.
"My routes back are learning" Garaki's expression changed. The speaker crackled once. All For One's voice returned, almost pleased.
"So are we" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Yes" The admission cost less than denial would have. The room was learning. U. A. was learning. His body was learning. The grafts were learning his boundaries because Scar Tissue kept drawing them. Nothing was clean. Nothing was still. The doctor stepped away.
"Rest. The next phase will be more demanding" Ren did not ask what that meant. Not yet. He watched the ceiling until the lights blurred into one flat white plane. They are in me. They are not mine. Containment is not acceptance. Pain is route back. Food is route back. No is route back. Here is route back. Archive node four. Shock. His routes back were learning. For tonight, that was enough to keep the room from becoming the whole map.
