Chương 98: The Room With No Small Objects

The new room had a kettle bolted to the counter. Ren stared at it for longer than the kettle deserved. It was small, white, rounded at the edges, and fixed to the surface by a metal bracket that had been added so carefully it looked less like a security measure and more like the kettle had always been born there, domesticated and restrained. The cord ran behind a sealed panel. The lid could open only halfway. The base could not be lifted. The cups were not ceramic. The spoons were not metal.
The tea packets came in a clear locked case with a staff seal over the hinge. The room was called a secured recovery suite. That was an insult to rooms and recovery. It had a bed, a bolted desk, a fixed chair, a second chair that could be removed from outside, a bathroom with no loose mirror, a window that did not open, and a small shelf built into the wall. The shelf had nothing on it. That was the part that made Ren angry first. Not the locked tea. Not the camera in the corner.
Not the way the door made a soft mechanical sound whenever someone entered or left. The empty shelf. It existed only to show him what could not be placed there. No books unless checked and bound approved. No pens unless soft-bodied and counted in and out. No loose paper clips. No coins. No phone. No old keychains. No folded notes. No small stones from home. No ridiculous card from Sano unless laminated into something too large to roll. No personal object small enough to become a question. A shelf for absence.
Ren stood in the doorway with Kurose on one side and Recovery Girl behind him and did not step inside. Kurose noticed. She always noticed the worst useful things.
"Say it" Ren looked at the shelf.
"I hate it" Recovery Girl said "Good. It would be worrying if you admired the decor" Kurose's mouth tightened, not quite a smile. Ren still did not move. The room smelled clean. Not hospital sharp. Softer than that. U. A. had tried. Someone had put effort into making the secured recovery suite less like a containment cell. The blanket was dark blue instead of medical white. The lights could dim. The window looked toward an inner courtyard instead of a wall. The desk had enough space to write.
The fixed chair had padding. Someone had tried to give him dignity. The fact that he could see the attempt made the lack of it harder. He said "It is better than observation room one" Kurose nodded.
"Yes""It is still a box""Yes" Recovery Girl stepped beside him.
"Both things can be true. Walk in before the hallway starts becoming symbolic too" Ren stepped inside. The door remained open. He noticed that. Kurose noticed him noticing.
"Open during orientation. Closed after check. You can request it open when staff is present unless there is a security reason not to""That sounds generous and terrible""It is" Recovery Girl pointed at the bed.
"Sit" Ren sat on the fixed chair instead. Recovery Girl looked at him.
"The bed personally offended you?"
"The chair has less meaning""Do not develop furniture politics in my care""It might be too late" Kurose placed the folder on the bolted desk.
"Furniture politics will be noted as non-actionable" Ren let out something that almost became a laugh. It failed halfway. No one called attention to it. Good. Kurose opened the folder.
"Temporary conditions. You remain on campus. Your parents remain in guardian housing today. You may have scheduled supervised visits. You may receive approved messages. No personal device. No unvetted objects. No unplanned student visits. You can choose meals from approved options. You can choose tea from the checked case. You can request the lights dimmed. You can request silence" Ren looked at the tea case.
"You are listing choices""Yes""Because there are not many""Yes" The honesty should have helped. It did, a little. It hurt more. Recovery Girl sat on the edge of the bed without asking the bed's opinion.
"Safety without dignity becomes another injury. We are trying not to fail both" Ren looked at her. The sentence was too clean to be casual, too tired to be rehearsed. He said "Trying is not the same as succeeding""No" she said "It is not" Kurose wrote something down. Ren frowned.
"That was not a report""It was important""It was anger""Anger is often important" Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Especially when the alternative is becoming polite furniture" Ren looked at the bolted kettle.
"I feel like the kettle" Kurose's pen stopped. Recovery Girl followed his gaze.
"The kettle?"
"It can still do what it is for. But only where it is fixed" For a moment, neither adult spoke. Then Recovery Girl stood.
"Then we make sure you are not only used for what you are for" That should not have hit him as hard as it did. Ren looked down at his hands. Cool. Open because he had not decided what else to do with them. Kurose closed the folder.
"First choice. Tea or no tea?" Ren looked at the clear case. It was absurd. It was tiny. It was possibly the first real choice he had been offered all morning.
"What kind?" Kurose opened the case after checking the seal.
"Green. Barley. Chamomile. Something labeled calming citrus, which I distrust on principle" Recovery Girl said "Chamomile" Kurose said "He chooses" Ren stared at the packets. His throat tightened. That was ridiculous. A tea packet should not be able to do this. He said "Barley" Kurose took the packet out, held it where he could see it, and placed it on the counter. Recovery Girl opened the kettle lid halfway, filled it from the fixed water line, and pressed the button. The kettle hummed. Bolted. Restricted.
Still heating water. Ren hated the metaphor so much he almost told them to stop. He did not. When the tea was ready, Kurose placed it in front of him in a soft cup too large to vanish into anyone's hand.
"Barley" Ren wrapped both hands around it. Warm. Not dangerous. Just warm. No heat in his palms beyond the cup. He drank. It tasted like campus cafeteria water pretending to be home. He drank anyway. Hana visited at noon. The first thing she did was inspect the room without pretending not to. She saw the bolted kettle. The empty shelf. The sealed tea case. The soft cup in Ren's hand. Her face did several things quickly. None of them stayed long enough to be named.
Daichi came behind her with Bentaro, who had now acquired a second security tag and seemed to be rising through U. A.' s bureaucracy faster than most students. He stopped in the doorway and looked at the shelf.
"Oh" Ren said "Yes" Hana turned to Kurose.
"Can we put something there?" Kurose looked at the empty shelf.
"Not yet. We can discuss approved objects larger than the minimum capture concern. Soft items. Fixed items. Photographs printed on wall-safe material" Hana nodded. Then looked at Ren.
"What would you want there?" Ren had no answer. The question entered too fast. A book? A card? A photo? A ridiculous toy from childhood? Something normal enough to prove the room was not only a security diagram? The more he tried to think of an object, the more every object became suspicious.
"I do not know" Hana's face softened.
"Good" Ren blinked.
"Good?"
"If you had answered too quickly, I would have worried you were trying to make us feel better" Daichi lifted Bentaro slightly.
"The umbrella volunteers as tribute" Kurose said "No" Daichi lowered it.
"Bentaro withdraws under protest" Ren's mouth twitched. Hana crossed the room after staff cleared her. She stopped in front of him.
"Can I touch your hair?" The question landed differently from can I hug you. Smaller. More intimate somehow. Less dramatic and therefore more painful. Ren nodded.
"Yes" She touched his hair with one hand, slowly, as if the gesture might startle the room. Her fingers combed through the front, careful not to catch on anything that was not there. No object. No threat. Just a mother's hand. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. Ren closed his eyes. For three seconds, the room with no small objects became a room with one old motion inside it. Hana whispered "You need a haircut soon" Ren opened his eyes.
"That is what you say?"
"I refuse to let villains interrupt hair maintenance forever" Daichi nodded gravely.
"Strong family policy" Kurose looked away. Recovery Girl, at the door, said "Haircut postponed until we know scissors are not a psychological event" Hana's hand paused. Ren almost laughed. Then did. Quietly. Hana's face broke open around relief so quickly she had to look down. Daichi cleared his throat.
"Good. Still capable of being insulted by grooming" Ren said "Barely" They sat together after that. Not in a perfect way. Hana kept noticing the camera and then pretending not to. Daichi kept glancing at the sealed tea case like it had challenged him to a duel. Ren kept waiting for one of them to say something about the category, the target, the enemy interest, the future. Instead, Hana asked "Did you choose the tea?"
"Yes""What kind?"
"Barley""Terrible choice" Ren looked at her. Daichi winced.
"Hana""No. I refuse to lie in a crisis. Barley tea tastes like a wooden spoon gave up" Ren stared. Then laughed again. This one hurt. His eyes burned. Hana reached for him, stopped, asked with a look, and waited. He nodded. She hugged him. Carefully at first. Then less carefully when he leaned into it. Recovery Girl did not interrupt. Maybe because no heat rose. Maybe because even medicine had limits it did not want to cross. Daichi placed one hand on Ren's shoulder and said nothing. That was his talent.
Making silence practical. After a while, Hana pulled back and wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"You are still here" Ren said "Yes""I keep knowing that and then needing to check again""I know" She looked at the empty shelf.
"We will find something big enough" Ren followed her gaze.
"Big enough not to vanish?" Hana's mouth tightened.
"Big enough to remind the room it is not in charge" That was better. Daichi nodded.
"Maybe a framed photo too ugly for villains to want""Of you?" Hana asked"Cruel""Marriage" Ren smiled into the barley tea. The shelf stayed empty. It did not feel as victorious. That afternoon, Shinso came with soup. Not directly. That would have been too easy. He arrived with Kurose, who carried a sealed insulated container the size of a small bucket, inspected, tagged, and approved by a chain of adults who had clearly spent too long discussing whether soup could be weaponized by hostile compression methods.
Shinso looked embarrassed enough to become aggressive.
"Your mother sent this" Ren looked at the container.
"She sent soup to my secured recovery suite?"
"She sent enough soup to create a diplomatic incident" Kurose placed the container on the counter.
"Hana stated clearly that food is not a contract and soup is not a breach unless poorly supervised" Ren closed his eyes. Of course she had. Shinso stayed near the door. Ren opened his eyes.
"Are you coming in?"
"I am assessing whether this is a trap""It is soup""That has historically been the trap" Kurose said "You were approved for thirty minutes" Shinso muttered "By people who underestimate soup politics" But he entered. No phone. No small objects. No shoelace tips. No sarcasm confiscated, though Recovery Girl had allegedly considered it. The soup was poured into two large soft bowls. Hana had apparently written instructions for serving thickness, temperature, and emotional intent.
The written note had not been allowed into the room, but Kurose had read it and looked personally attacked by the level of detail. Shinso sat across from Ren with a bowl in both hands. He smelled it. Then looked furious. Ren asked "Good?"
"Unfortunately" They ate. For several minutes, they let the soup do what conversation could not. Then Shinso looked at the empty shelf.
"That thing is depressing""Yes""You should put Bakugo's ego there. Too big to capture" Ren nearly choked. Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Voice rest was lifted with conditions""That was therapeutic""That was slander""Can be both" Ren wiped his mouth.
"I suggested Bentaro""Obviously denied""Yes""Cowards" The soup was warm enough to make the room feel inhabited. Ren hated that it worked. Shinso watched him over the bowl.
"You look angry" Ren looked down.
"I am""Good""Everyone keeps saying that""Because you usually turn anger into homework" Ren looked up. Shinso's expression was flat, but not careless.
"You do. Something hurts and suddenly you're writing a framework" Ren said "Frameworks help""Sure. So do walls. Still a problem if you build them around your own head" Ren stared.
"That was almost compassionate""Take it back""No" Shinso groaned and returned to the soup. Ren held the bowl in both hands. The warmth was not a warning. He tried to let that be true.
"I hate the room" Ren said Shinso glanced around.
"The room knows""I hate that it is necessary""That one's worse""I hate that every safe thing feels like someone else owning a piece of me" Shinso stopped eating. Ren had not meant to say that much. But the words had left and the room did not collapse. Shinso looked at the sealed window, then at the shelf, then at Ren.
"When people are afraid of my Quirk, they want distance. When they think it might be useful, they want access. Both feel like hands" Ren looked at him. Shinso's grip tightened on the bowl.
"So, yeah. I get parts of it. Not all. But parts" The room was quiet. Kurose stood near the door, very still. Ren said "What do you do with that?" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Usually? Become unpleasant" Ren said "It seems to work""Not as well as I pretend" That answer stayed between them. Not fixed. Not solved. Real. Ren looked at the shelf.
"Maybe I need something unpleasant there" Shinso nodded seriously.
"A framed photo of Aizawa smiling" Kurose said "That does not exist""Exactly. Perfect security object. Impossible to capture" Ren laughed again. Kurose sighed.
"I am noting improvement and blaming soup" Shinso lifted the bowl slightly.
"Soup is not a contract, but it is evidence" Ren nodded.
"Dangerous evidence""Extremely" When Shinso left, he paused at the door. No big line. No ritual. Just one look at the room, then Ren.
"This room sucks" Ren said "Yes""You do not" The words came out too fast, like he had shoved them through a closing door. Then Shinso left before Ren could answer. Kurose looked at Ren. Ren looked at the soup bowl.
"Do not write that down""I was not planning to""You were""I was considering the ethics" He looked at her. She closed the folder without writing.
"Some lines can stay in the room" That was new. Ren nodded slowly.
"Thank you" Kurose did not correct him. Evening brought the first argument Ren lost loudly. It began with the phone. Not his phone. That was still locked away. A secured tablet sat on the bolted desk after dinner, and Kurose explained the messaging window. Ten minutes. Approved contacts. Supervised. No images unless pre-cleared. No public apps. No unscreened replies. No direct internet. Ren listened. His palms stayed cool.
Then she said "You can record one message for Midoriya if Recovery Girl approves delivery when he wakes" His hands warmed. Not much. He ignored it.
"I want to see him" Kurose's expression did not change.
"No""He is in the same building""No""I would follow route restrictions""No" His voice sharpened.
"You have not asked Recovery Girl""I already know the answer""You know or you decided?" Kurose went still. That was the wrong sentence. Ren knew it and did not want to take it back. The room felt suddenly too small. Kurose placed the tablet on the desk.
"Say what you mean" Ren stood. Not fast. Enough that the chair scraped.
"I mean everyone says I have choices and then the choices are tea, lights, and whether I phrase my confinement politely" Kurose did not flinch. Good. Infuriating. Ren continued "Midoriya is alive. He saved Kota. He was part of the same attack. I am not asking to run into the forest. I am asking to see someone down the hall""And I am saying no""Because of target protocol""Yes""Because of object risk""Yes""Because target stacking""Yes""Because everything" Kurose's voice stayed calm.
"Because you are exhausted, classified, being watched by enemies who adapted to our structure, and you are trying to turn a medical visit into proof that this room does not own you" The words struck too close. Ren's hands heated. Moderate. He opened them. Kurose's eyes flicked down. He hated that too.
"I hate that you are watching my hands while arguing with me""I know""I hate that you are right""I know""I hate that knowing does not make me less angry""Good""Stop saying good!" The shout surprised both of them. Not loud enough to call security. Loud enough to make the room answer. Ren stood there breathing hard, palms hot, eyes burning, the bolted kettle humming faintly because it had reheated water no one wanted. Kurose said nothing. That was the first kindness. Then Recovery Girl appeared in the doorway.
Not summoned by alarm. Summoned by the spiritual smell of student rebellion.
"What happened?" Ren answered before Kurose could.
"I shouted" Recovery Girl looked at his hands.
"Obviously. Why?"
"I want to see Midoriya""No" The speed of it almost broke him. He laughed once, ugly.
"Efficient" Recovery Girl entered.
"Sit down before anger makes gravity more ambitious""I am tired of sitting down""I did not ask if you were tired""I know""Sit" Ren stared at her. For one reckless second, he considered staying standing just because he could. Then the stupidity of proving autonomy through posture became clear and humiliating. He sat. Not gently. Recovery Girl came closer.
"You can be angry" Ren looked away. She snapped "Look at me while being angry" He did. Her face was fierce.
"You can be angry that the room is ugly. You can be angry that you cannot see your friend. You can be angry that adults keep saying no because no is safer. You can be angry that your mother has to ask before touching your hair. You can be angry that your choices are small enough to fit in a tea case" His throat closed. She leaned on her cane.
"But you do not get to pretend the anger proves the answer is wrong" Ren could not answer. Kurose stood by the desk, folder closed, face tired. Recovery Girl continued "Young Midoriya is not awake enough for that visit. His mother has priority. His medical team has priority. Your target status makes any movement around him a security complication. That is not a judgment of your friendship. It is triage" Ren's eyes burned.
"I know""Say something else. Knowing is not the same thing as accepting" Ren took a breath that shook.
"I hate it""Better""I hate this room""Yes""I hate that I am safer here""Yes""I hate that if I leave at the wrong time, someone else might pay for it" Recovery Girl's face softened by half a degree.
"Yes" Ren looked at the empty shelf.
"I hate the shelf" Kurose said "That one is personal""It is" Recovery Girl nodded toward the shelf.
"Then tomorrow we fix the shelf" Ren looked at her.
"With what?"
"Something large, ugly, and approved" Kurose said "His father suggested a photo" Ren said "Hana suggested something big enough to remind the room it is not in charge" Recovery Girl considered.
"Good. We will find something obnoxious" Ren let out a breath. The anger did not vanish. It stopped trying to eat its way through his ribs. Recovery Girl pointed at the tablet.
"You may record a message. It will be delivered when Midoriya can receive it and when his mother agrees" Ren nodded. His voice was rough.
"Okay" Kurose did not say accepted. He was grateful. The recording took six attempts. The first sounded too formal. The second too apologetic. The third tried to carry too much. The fourth made Recovery Girl threaten to delete the word responsible from the language. The fifth was silent for forty seconds. The sixth was short. Ren looked at the tablet camera and imagined Midoriya awake enough to understand but not awake enough to feel he had to answer.
"Midoriya. Kota is alive. You are alive. Everyone keeps both lines. Do not turn either one into an apology before you can sit up. Uraraka is here. Iida is here. Asui is here. All of us are here. Rest first. Explain later" He stopped. Then added because it felt less like a report and more like friendship.
"You are very stupid. Kota asked us to tell you" Recovery Girl approved that part immediately. Kurose approved the rest. Ren sat back. His palms cooled. The room remained a box. But something had left it. Not him. Not yet. Maybe a message counted as a small piece of motion. Night came slowly. Hana and Daichi returned for the last visit with a proposal. They entered carrying nothing but expressions that told Ren they had argued with at least one administrator and maybe a printer.
Kurose followed behind with a flat rectangular panel nearly the size of a serving tray, sealed in clear protective laminate. Ren looked at it.
"What is that?" Hana's eyes gleamed with exhausted triumph.
"Approved shelf object" Daichi looked solemn.
"Large enough not to vanish. Ugly enough to discourage theft" Kurose looked as if she had lost a battle and chosen to call it negotiation. She turned the panel around. It was a printed photograph laminated onto a thick foam backing, too large to fit in a pocket, too soft to shatter, too inspected to contain anything dangerous. The photo showed Bentaro propped upright in the Akiyama apartment kitchen wearing one of Hana's scarves around the handle. Ren stared. The room went silent.
Then he laughed so hard he had to fold forward. Hana put both hands over her mouth. Daichi looked deeply proud. Recovery Girl, from the doorway, said "Medically obnoxious. Approved" Ren laughed until his eyes hurt and the laugh became something else for two breaths. Hana stepped forward, stopped, waited. He nodded without lifting his head. She touched his shoulder. The laminated Bentaro was placed on the empty shelf. The room changed. Not completely. Not magically. It was still secured. Still watched.
Still stripped of small things. Still a room built because enemies had tried to take him. But the shelf was no longer absence. It was ridiculous. It was theirs. Shinso was allowed to see it through the glass later and stared for a full ten seconds before pressing the intercom.
"Why is the umbrella wearing a scarf?" Ren, exhausted and hoarse from laughing, said "Rank" Shinso looked at the photo again.
"I hate that it helps""So do I""Good" Ren glared weakly. Shinso lifted both hands.
"Sorry. Trustworthy" That was worse. Better. Hana and Daichi left after lights dimmed. Kurose checked the door. Recovery Girl checked his palms. Cool. No ridging. No lattice. The bolted kettle sat quiet. The tea case remained locked. The camera remained in the corner. The door remained controlled from outside. The room was still not home. Ren opened his chart. He wrote: Moved to secured recovery suite. No small objects. Empty shelf triggered anger. Barley tea chosen. Bad choice, apparently. Hana touched my hair.
Haircut postponed due to scissors being a psychological event. Shinso visited with soup. Soup is evidence, still not contract. Argument with Kurose and Recovery Girl about seeing Midoriya. I shouted. Anger did not make the answer wrong. Recorded message for Midoriya. Shelf object approved: Bentaro photograph wearing Hana's scarf. Room less empty. Still a box. He paused. Then wrote the line that had been forming since morning.
A protected room can still take things from you if no one fights to leave pieces of you inside it. He looked at the shelf. Bentaro stared back with fabric dignity. Ren added: Today they fought for the shelf. That line stayed. It was not enough. The room still had locks. The door still made its soft mechanical sound. His phone was still gone. Ragdoll was still missing. Midoriya was still behind medical doors. Ren was still classified.
But the shelf held an ugly photograph of an umbrella wearing a scarf, and the absurdity of it sat in the room like a small, stubborn refusal. Ren placed both hands open over the blanket. Cool. Empty. His. The room with no small objects had one large stupid thing now. For tonight, that was not freedom. But it was proof that protection had not taken every corner.
