Chương 104: The Moving Structure

The problem with learning that your Quirk came from your parents was that breakfast started looking hereditary. Ren knew that was ridiculous. The barley tea did not taste like Hana's thermal sensitivity or Daichi's load distribution. The soft spoon did not carry ancestral trauma. The bolted kettle did not hum with the tragic music of biological inheritance. Food was food. Tea was tea. A spoon was still too soft and therefore personally offensive.
Still, when Hana sent another approved morning message, the first line hit differently. Did you sleep warm or cold? Not did you sleep well. Warm or cold. Hana had always asked questions like that. As a child, Ren had thought all parents did. Too hot? Too pale? Hands cold? Neck warm? Did the fever break? Did your muscles ache before or after the chill? She had known his body in temperatures before he knew it in words. Now the question had roots. Ren stared at it for longer than necessary.
Daichi's line underneath did not help. Did the new chair hold your back properly? Bad chairs are traitors. Of course. Warmth and holding. Regulation and stability. Family, disguised as breakfast logistics. Ren put the tablet down and looked at his hands. Cool. Open. His. He typed back: Slept warm enough. Chair is politically acceptable. The answer from Hana arrived quickly. Politically acceptable is not an answer. Daichi replied a second later. It is exactly an answer.
The chair and I respect each other from a distance. Ren smiled despite himself. The room R-2 held the smile without turning it into a medical event. That was one of its improvements. Observation room one had made every expression feel observed. The secured recovery suite had made every laugh feel like a crack in containment.
R-2 still had a camera, a request button, a sealed window, a bolted tea station, and a door controlled from outside, but the shelf had Bentaro's portrait, the family photo, and the wall panel saying THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE. The room was watched, yes. But it had started to have witnesses instead of only surveillance. That mattered. It was also probably dangerous. Ren had begun to understand that everything that mattered became dangerous if someone else studied it long enough. A knock came at the door frame.
Not glass this time. Door frame. That still felt new. Kurose stood outside with Dr. Seno and Recovery Girl. Aizawa leaned against the opposite wall in the hallway, arms folded, scarf loose, looking like he had personally objected to morning and lost on technical grounds. Ren set the tablet down.
"Medical?" Recovery Girl said "Unfortunately" Dr. Seno gave a small apologetic smile.
"No needles""That is a suspicious opening""It is an honest one" Kurose entered first. Dr. Seno followed. Recovery Girl entered last and looked at the room as if checking whether it had become arrogant overnight. Aizawa stayed in the doorway. Ren looked at him.
"Are you guarding the hall or avoiding the meeting?"
"Yes" Kurose sat at the fixed desk.
"We need to discuss a scan" Ren's palms warmed. Not much. Enough to be annoying. Recovery Girl saw.
"Not an emergency scan. Not because something changed overnight" Dr. Seno took the heavier chair near the shelf only after Ren nodded.
"Yesterday's review gave us a better working model of your Quirk. That helps, but it also exposes what we do not know" Ren looked at her.
"Which is a lot""Yes" The simple answer was almost comforting. Dr. Seno placed a laminated diagram on the desk. Large enough to pass object protocol. No loose paper. No small corner. Ren disliked that he noticed. The diagram showed a simplified human arm. Tendons. fascia. skin. scar layers. vascular response. nerve pathways. A few sections were highlighted.
"We need a baseline connective tissue scan and autonomic stress response profile. Not to train the Quirk. Not to trigger it. To understand what ordinary looks like in your body now" Ren looked at the diagram.
"Ordinary may be a generous word""It often is in medicine" Recovery Girl snorted. Dr. Seno continued "If we do not know your baseline, every future fever, pain flare, stiffness episode, or scar change becomes guesswork. Guesswork is dangerous when people are already tempted to make dramatic assumptions about you" Ren glanced at Aizawa. He looked satisfied by that sentence.
"No injury training" Aizawa said Dr. Seno turned toward him.
"Correct" Recovery Girl pointed at Aizawa.
"See? Someone else said it. You can stop hovering""No" Kurose looked at the diagram.
"Where is the scanner?" That was the question. Ren felt it before Dr. Seno answered.
"Clinical imaging level. Sub-basement two. U. A. has the equipment, but not in this wing" The room changed. Not visibly. It stayed the same size, same shelf, same panel, same door. But the map expanded underneath it. Sub-basement two. Another route. More doors. More lifts. More corners. More reasons. Ren looked toward the request button by the bed. A yes without the wrong door. Maybe. Maybe not. Kurose asked "Can it be moved here?" Dr. Seno shook her head.
"Not the full system. A portable scan would miss the deep fascia and vascular response pattern. It would be better than nothing, but not enough to guide safe reintroduction to training" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"I hate when the better medical answer has legs" Aizawa said "Agreed" Ren looked at Dr. Seno.
"Do I need it today?"
"No""Soon?"
"Yes. Before we design anything beyond walking, rest, and basic recovery" That was fair. Fair had become one of the more irritating kinds of difficult. Ren leaned back.
"If I refuse?" Dr. Seno did not blink.
"Then we do not do it. We continue with a poorer map" Kurose watched him. Recovery Girl watched the wall panel. Aizawa watched the hall. Ren looked at the family photo on the shelf. Eleven-year-old him with a textbook, furious at cartilage. Hana laughing. Daichi defending dinner with a pan. A normal room full of objects nobody had scanned. A poorer map. He had lived with one for years. It had not made him safer.
"Not today" he said Dr. Seno nodded.
"Reasonable""But plan it" Kurose wrote nothing for once. Just looked at him. Ren added "I want to know what ordinary means before someone else decides it for me" Recovery Girl's expression softened by half a degree.
"That is the least stupid reason you could have given""Thank you?"
"Do not push it" Aizawa finally stepped into the room.
"One condition" Ren looked at him.
"No surprise route changes" Kurose said "Already in the draft" Aizawa looked at her.
"Then it goes in bigger letters" Recovery Girl said "For once, I enjoy his paranoia" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"If the route changes, we stop. Not adapt. Stop. We reassess from a secured location" Ren nodded.
"Yes""No proving you can handle it""I know""Do you?" Ren almost said yes again. Then stopped.
"No""Better" Dr. Seno looked between them with the careful expression of someone watching a teaching style that should not work and unfortunately did. The planning began at 10: 00. It should not have involved Ren. That was the point, apparently. Nezu insisted that if Ren was old enough to be classified by enemies and protected by adults, he was old enough to hear how movement would be decided around his own body. Recovery Girl called that "annoyingly ethical" and then agreed.
Aizawa said nothing, which from him meant yes with teeth. So Ren sat in the secured planning room beside Kurose, across from Dr. Seno, with Hana and Daichi on screened guardian call and Nezu at the head of the table. Aizawa stood by the door. Recovery Girl sat only because Nezu had said the meeting would last longer if she remained standing and threatening everyone. A floor map lay projected onto the wall. No loose paper. No small markers. Everything large, fixed, controlled.
Ren hated that he was becoming fluent in the language of rooms. Dr. Seno traced the route with a laser pointer mounted to the table so it could not be picked up. Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author. R-2. Protected hall. Internal lift B. Medical cross-corridor. Sub-basement two imaging suite. Total movement time: nine minutes, not counting scan. Total scan time: twenty-two minutes.
Total exposure time outside residential wing: estimated forty-one minutes. Hana, on the screen, looked like every number had personally offended her.
"Forty-one minutes is too long" Dr. Seno nodded.
"It is longer than I like""Can it be shorter?"
"Not without making the scan worse" Daichi asked "What part is most exposed?" Aizawa answered before anyone else.
"Cross-corridor. It intersects with staff movement and supply access" Ren noticed the word supply and disliked it immediately. Kurose said "We can shut down supply movement" Security officer Hakamata, who had joined the meeting remotely from another room, shook his head.
"For the window, yes. But the more we shut down, the more visible the movement becomes to internal observers" Hana leaned closer to the screen.
"Internal observers?" Nezu's voice was calm.
"We must assume information can leak from ordinary systems and ordinary people. Not because everyone is malicious. Because large structures speak in ways they do not always notice" Daichi looked at Ren.
"The building has gossip" Present Mic, who had joined only to help coordinate staff movement and looked personally wounded by the seriousness of the room, said "As a sound hero, I hate how accurate that is" Ren almost smiled. The almost faded when the map changed. Alternate route. Stairs. Longer. More corners. Fewer mechanical door closures. More landing checks. Second alternate. Service hall. Shorter. Too many supply panels. Rejected before anyone finished explaining. Third alternate.
Delay scan until full external lockdown. Recovery Girl said "No. Delaying knowledge because security fears movement means security starts practicing medicine badly" Hakamata did not argue. He looked too tired to pretend she was wrong. Kurose looked at Ren.
"You can request delay" Ren looked at the map. He wanted to. Not because he thought delay was safer. Because delay would make the shape disappear for one more day. That was not a good reason. It was a real one.
"Do not delay because I am scared" Hana's face changed. Daichi's too. Recovery Girl said "Fear is allowed to count" Ren nodded.
"It is counted. It does not get the whole vote" Aizawa's eyes sharpened with approval he did not voice. Nezu folded his paws.
"Then we proceed with planning, not execution. Tentative window tomorrow morning. Final approval two hours prior" Hakamata added "Route freeze one hour prior. No changes after freeze without abort" Aizawa said "Put that in red" Kurose said "Already done" Aizawa said "Bigger red" Hana said "I agree with the angry scarf man" Aizawa closed his eyes. Present Mic whispered "Angry scarf man" Kurose looked down at her notes as if that would save her. Ren covered his mouth. Recovery Girl pointed her cane at him.
"Do not laugh too hard before a scan discussion""I am trying" Daichi said "Trying is visible" Aizawa opened his eyes.
"I hate all of you" Nezu's ears lifted.
"And yet, Mr. Aizawa, you remain""Under protest""Of course" The meeting ended with a tentative plan and too many signatures. Ren returned to R-2 feeling as if he had already traveled the route. His body had not moved. The structure had. Shinso arrived after lunch and found Ren sitting by the sealed window, staring at the courtyard trees. He entered after object checks and looked at the new laminated map on the desk.
"Ah. The sacred dungeon route" Ren blinked.
"What?"
"Sub-basement scan. Lift B. Cross-corridor. Boss fight with medical imaging machine" Ren stared.
"That was strangely accurate""I heard Kaminari explain it badly""How did Kaminari hear?"
"He hears everything unless it is instructions" Ren rubbed his face.
"Internal observers""Exactly" Shinso sat in the other heavy chair.
"Do you want the scan?"
"Yes""Do you want the route?"
"No""Disgusting but balanced" Ren looked at him.
"How would you feel?"
"If someone said they needed to map my brain better so they could help me use Brainwashing safely?"
"Yes" Shinso's face closed for a second. Then reopened because he chose it.
"I'd want the map. I'd hate the room. I'd suspect everyone holding the pen" Ren nodded.
"That sounds close""Good. Then don't pretend suspicion means refusal""I was not""You were thinking about it""Maybe" Shinso leaned back.
"Just make them keep the route frozen. No improvising. No heroic detours. No we can still make it if we switch corridors garbage" Ren looked at him.
"That sounds like Aizawa""I contain multitudes. Unfortunately, one of them is sleep-deprived homeroom trauma" Ren smiled. Shinso looked at the shelf.
"Your family photo is new""Yes""You were tiny""I was eleven""Tiny and angry at a book""Cartilage""Of course" Ren looked at the photo.
"I keep thinking about the Quirk explanation" Shinso did not answer too fast. Good. Ren continued "It makes me feel less like the Quirk came from nowhere""That's good?"
"Yes""And worse?"
"Yes" Shinso nodded.
"Because now it has family fingerprints" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes" Shinso looked at his own hands.
"My mom's voice gets sharp when she's scared. Mine gets useful when people are scared. I hated that for a while" Ren looked at him. Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Still do sometimes""Does she know?"
"No" Ren let the silence sit. Shinso looked out the sealed window.
"Family is weird when the thing people fear in you has a resemblance" Ren said "I wrote that down yesterday""Of course you did""It was good""Never tell me that again" The afternoon passed with controlled normality. That was the phrase Kurose used once and immediately regretted because Ren, Shinso, and later Mina mocked it for hours.
Controlled normality meant Ren was allowed to sit in the protected residential common room for twenty-five minutes with three other students at a time, while staff pretended the room was casual and everyone pretended not to notice the absence of small objects. The common room had fixed couches, oversized cushions sewn to the furniture, a wall-mounted screen with no remote, and board games printed directly onto the table surface with magnetic pieces too large to close a fist around.
Kaminari immediately declared it "baby prison chess" and lost to Yaoyorozu in six minutes. Mina called the furniture "commitment couches" Sero said the cushions looked like they had signed employment contracts. Todoroki stared at the wall-mounted screen and asked if the lack of remote counted as emotional hardship. Jiro said "For Kaminari, yes" Ren sat through all of it with his hands cool and his chest strangely tight. Not because of fear. Because it felt good. That was the dangerous thing.
It felt good to hear voices that were not briefing voices. It felt good to watch Kaminari be dramatically betrayed by oversized chess. It felt good to see Uraraka laugh and then not apologize for laughing. It felt good when Iida tried to organize turn order and Asui told him the table was not a rescue route. It felt good enough that when the twenty-five minutes ended, the leaving hurt. Ren returned to R-2 quieter than he had left it. Kurose noticed.
"Too much?" Ren shook his head.
"No. That is the problem" She understood.
"Because it was good""Yes""Good things create wants""Yes""And wants make locked doors worse" Ren looked at the request button.
"Yes" Kurose leaned against the desk.
"This is why we do it anyway" Ren looked at her.
"So I remember what the locks are protecting?"
"So you remember there is something on the other side besides danger" That was unfairly effective. He did not answer. At 16: 12, the first wrong thing happened. It was not dramatic. That was probably why it was dangerous. A chime sounded from the wall panel near the door. Not the emergency alarm. Not the movement request tone. A soft administrative sound Ren had not heard before. Kurose looked up immediately. Ren froze.
The panel displayed: ROUTE UPDATE NOTICEIMAGING ASSESSMENT WINDOW MOVED TO TODAY 17: 00LIFT B MAINTENANCE LOCKOUTALTERNATE ROUTE: LIFT C VIA EAST CORRIDORPLEASE CONFIRM For one second, nobody moved. Then Kurose said "No" One word. Flat. The room seemed to exhale through Ren's lungs. Aizawa arrived within thirty seconds. Not running. Worse. Walking fast enough that every staff member moved out of his way before he reached the door. He read the panel. His face did not change. That was how Ren knew it was bad.
"Who sent it?" he asked Kurose was already on the secured line.
"Unknown. It has administrative shell formatting but no final authorization signature" Ren stood slowly. The words on the panel remained. IMAGING ASSESSMENT WINDOW MOVED TO TODAY 17: 00 Today. Alternate route. Lift C. East corridor. A route change. A surprise. A window moved earlier. His palms heated. Moderate. He said nothing because everyone already knew. Then he forced the words out anyway.
"Palms hot. No image. Route-change trigger" Aizawa looked at him.
"Good" Ren did not correct him. This time, good meant stay with us. Recovery Girl appeared, followed by Hakamata and Nezu. The room filled without crowding because everyone had learned where not to stand. Nezu looked at the panel.
"Do not confirm" Kurose's eyes sharpened.
"I was not planning to""Of course" Hakamata spoke into his comm.
"Lock internal movement. Freeze all lift access. Check Lift B physically. Check east corridor. Pull admin logs" Recovery Girl moved to Ren, close but not touching.
"Sit" Ren sat because this was not the time to make furniture political. Hana and Daichi appeared on the secured call two minutes later, both pale. Someone had told them fast. Good. Terrible. Hana looked at Ren first.
"Are you there?" Ren answered.
"Here" She breathed. Daichi looked past him at the panel.
"That was not the plan" Aizawa said "Correct" Daichi's jaw tightened.
"Then why did the building say it?" No one answered quickly. Nezu folded his paws.
"That is the question" The checks took twelve minutes. They felt longer. Lift B was not under maintenance. Lift C had no scheduled usage. East corridor had not been cleared. The message had entered through a compromised administrative notification layer, not the core security system. It could not open doors. It could not authorize movement. It could only suggest. Nudge. Create confusion. Pretend to be the kind of change tired people accepted because the format looked familiar. Please confirm.
Ren stared at the words until Kurose dimmed the panel. Hakamata's voice came through the room comm.
"Probe confirmed. No physical breach detected. No unauthorized movement. No object found. No hostile contact" No hostile contact. Ren almost laughed. The contact had been with the plan. Aizawa said "Assessment tomorrow is cancelled until further review" Dr. Seno, on comm, sounded unhappy but immediate.
"Agreed" Recovery Girl looked at Ren.
"Good" He closed his eyes. The scan had become a worse map before happening. Hana's voice came through the call.
"Ren" He opened his eyes. She was looking at him with a kind of anger he had only seen once before, when a doctor had dismissed his pain at thirteen because the imaging had been clean.
"You did not do anything wrong by wanting the scan" The sentence struck hard. Because he had not known he needed it until she said it. Daichi leaned closer to the camera.
"The wrong thing was not the route. It was someone trying to steal the choice inside it" Ren's hands cooled by a fraction. Aizawa looked at Daichi. Then at Ren.
"Your father is right" Daichi blinked. Hana said "Write that down" Kurose, despite everything, said "Already considered" Aizawa glared at everyone. Nezu smiled faintly. The room remained under temporary lockdown for another hour. Not because they thought something was inside. Because trust had been touched. Ren sat in the chair near the shelf while staff came and went. Nobody moved him. Nobody changed the room. Nobody said we can still make it if we adjust.
The route-change rule held because Aizawa had made it ugly enough to remember. At some point, Shinso appeared outside the door, not cleared to enter during lockdown. He stood in the hall with both hands visible. Ren looked at him. Shinso pressed the intercom.
"Room still not in charge?" Ren looked at the wall panel. Then at the notification now dark on the door display.
"No" Shinso nodded.
"Good. Don't let fake paperwork win" Ren almost smiled. Then Shinso's face turned more serious.
"You wanted the scan""Yes""Still allowed""Not today""Still allowed" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Shinso stepped back when a staff member gestured. Before leaving, he said "The route flinched. You didn't" Ren watched him go. The sentence stayed. Not as heroism. Not even holding. Something else. By evening, U. A. had a new term. Administrative route probe. Present Mic called it "evil calendar nonsense" and was told not to write that in the incident summary. Kurose privately agreed with him. Nezu did not laugh when he briefed the core staff. That made the room colder.
"The enemy did not need access to doors" Nezu said "Only to the assumption that doors would be opened by others" Aizawa stood with his arms folded.
"They tested whether we would obey a convenient format" Hakamata looked grim.
"We did not""No" Nezu said "Because the plan included refusal" Recovery Girl looked at the updated security log.
"They moved the scan earlier and changed the lift. If this had come during a shift change…"
"We would still have aborted" Aizawa said"Maybe" Kurose said Everyone looked at her. She did not apologize.
"We are tired. Parents are scared. Medical wants data. Ren wants movement. Staff wants improvement. A message that gives everyone a way to move forward is dangerous because it feels like help" The sentence settled heavily. All Might, in hero form at the back of the room, looked down.
"Then the next attempt will feel more helpful" Nezu's eyes narrowed.
"Yes" No one liked that answer. Somewhere beyond U. A., Garaki liked it very much. He watched the failed notification attempt resolve into U. A.'s response map. Not complete. Enough. Message delivered. Movement aborted. Route freeze principle active. No panic relocation. Family notified quickly. Peer anchor attempted contact but not granted entry during lockdown. Subject remained in room. Heat response moderate, recovered. Garaki adjusted his glasses.
"Interesting" All For One sat behind him, silent. Garaki enlarged the response timeline.
"They did not move him. Good. The rule is strong" All For One said "You sound pleased by resistance""Resistance reveals structure""Can the rule be broken?"
"Not by a false maintenance notice now. They will harden that layer""Then the probe failed" Garaki smiled.
"No. It answered. We asked whether convenience could move them. It cannot. Not yet" All For One's fingers shifted.
"What will?" Garaki looked at the branching map. Medical necessity. Guardian emergency. Peer danger. Staff compromise. Public exposure. Internal ethical strain.
"Need" he said All For One's voice softened.
"Whose?" Garaki did not answer immediately. That was the beautiful question. In R-2, Ren wrote late. The room had been checked three more times. The panel had been reset. The scan was postponed. Hana and Daichi had been allowed an extended call. Shinso had sent one approved text. Fake paperwork is still paperwork. Therefore evil. Bakugo had somehow learned enough to send: If a wall tells you to move, punch the wall emotionally. Ren had replied: Walls are not emotionally vulnerable.
Bakugo had answered: Weak walls aren't. Ren had saved that too. Now the room was dim. The wall panel stayed above the desk. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE Ren opened his chart and wrote: Scan proposed for baseline. Needed. Not today. Planning included me. This mattered. Route freeze rule: no changes after freeze without abort. At 16: 12 false route update appeared. Imaging moved to today. Lift B fake maintenance. Alternate Lift C via east corridor. Kurose said no immediately. Aizawa arrived. Lockdown.
No physical breach. Administrative route probe. The message could not open doors. It tried to make us open them. Parents reminded me wanting the scan was not wrong. Daichi: the wrong thing was someone trying to steal the choice inside it. Shinso: the route flinched. You didn't. Scan postponed, not refused. He stopped. His hands were cool now. He looked at the request button beside the bed. A button that asked for the door to open. A button that required trust. The probe had not touched the button.
It had touched the idea behind it. He wrote the final line. The first attack on the new room did not try to break the lock. It tried to sound like permission. Ren read it twice. Trustworthy. He closed the chart. Outside, the courtyard trees moved behind sealed glass. Inside, the room listened. Beyond U. A., someone had learned that a false yes was not enough. Ren did not know that yet. But he felt the shape of it at the edge of sleep. The next yes would have to hurt more.
