The next board made everyone angry for different reasons. SURVIVING IS NOT PASSING, SCORING IS NOT BETRAYAL, ASSISTS ARE NOT INVISIBLE, DO NOT BECOME SOMEONE ELSE FOR POINTS Kaminari read it once. Then twice. Then turned to Jiro.
"I understand all the words and none of the emotional crimes" Jiro looked at the board.
"That means training is about to hurt" Sero leaned back against the wall.
"Surviving is not passing sounds rude" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"It sounds obvious" Kirishima looked at him.
"Obvious can still hurt" Bakugo made a disgusted sound.
"That is because everyone keeps making obvious things into feelings" Todoroki studied the second line.
"Scoring is not betrayal" Mina raised a hand before Aizawa could begin.
"Can we start with that one? Because it sounds like it is aimed at half the room" Aizawa stood beside the board with a basket of training balls at his feet and a target vest over one shoulder.
"It is aimed at the whole room. Some of you think scoring means selfishness. Some of you think scoring means proving superiority. Some of you think helping someone else score means disappearing. Some of you think taking the shot yourself means abandoning the team" His eyes moved across them. Midoriya looked down. Uraraka's mouth tightened. Iida adjusted his glasses. Kirishima shifted his weight.
Ren sat near the Provisional Track line with his chair angled toward the field, wrist patch quiet, target vest already modified and secured. Shinso stood beside him with his collar neutral and scarf ready. Aizawa's gaze landed on them last.
"And some of you need to learn that earning points inside your role does not make you selfish, contaminated, or less careful" Ren looked at the board. Scoring is not betrayal. His wrist patch gave a single stress pulse. He pressed two fingers to it. Map. Gym Gamma. chair. vest. board. Class 1-A. Class 1-B. Aizawa. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Shinso. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. no gate. Recovery Girl watched from medical station and did not interrupt. Good. Shinso stared at the third line.
Assists are not invisible.
"Is that official scoring?" Kurose, standing by the board with a folder, answered "Not always" Shinso looked at her.
"That is worse""Yes" Aizawa said "The exam may require direct eliminations. It may reward individual scoring. It may not formally recognize every assist that creates a successful hit. That does not mean assists have no value. It means you need to structure them so the field sees contribution and the team still passes" Bakugo pointed at the board.
"So hit targets" Aizawa looked at him.
"Yes. And do not become stupid while doing it" Bakugo lowered his hand.
"Always the extra part" Yaoyorozu raised her hand.
"Are we training direct scoring for students whose roles are not primarily offensive?"
"Today, yes" Uraraka looked toward Ren. Then away quickly because staring had become its own kind of bad habit. Aizawa noticed anyway.
"Part of hero work is scoring when scoring matters. You do not get to call a required objective immoral because it feels less noble than rescue. You also do not get to twist yourself into someone else's method because you panic at the objective" Kendo, leading the Class 1-B group today, nodded from across the gym.
"Class 1-B will act as opposition and evaluator observers" Monoma spread his arms.
"I have been selected as a cautionary tale and tactical asset" Kendo said "Mostly cautionary" Monoma placed a hand over his heart.
"Cruel but not inaccurate" Tetsutetsu punched one fist into the other.
"Direct scoring practice! Good!" Kaminari whispered "He is the opposite of the board" Jiro said "He is a useful warning too" Aizawa wrote the day's phases. PHASE 1 — SCORE WINDOWSPHASE 2 — ASSIST TO POINTPHASE 3 — PROVISIONAL TRACK DIRECT SCORE Then he turned.
"Phase one. Class 1-A only. You will create score windows without abandoning role. Every successful hit must be followed by a one-sentence report. What opened the point? Who created it? What did it cost?" Kaminari raised his hand.
"Do we have to report emotional cost?" Recovery Girl said "Only if it affects hydration" Kaminari lowered his hand.
"Everything affects hydration eventually" The first phase was ugly. Not because they failed to score. Because they scored for the wrong reasons before learning how to score for the right ones. Bakugo scored first, naturally. He blasted forward, forced Tetsutetsu to raise guard, and threw a training ball hard enough to strike one of Tetsutetsu's shoulder targets before the metal-skinned boy could counter. Aizawa called "Report" Bakugo snarled "I opened it" Aizawa waited. Bakugo rolled his eyes.
"Forward pressure. forced guard high. shoulder target exposed. cost. position overextended" Aizawa nodded.
"Correct. Fix cost" Bakugo looked annoyed because he already knew. Kirishima scored next by holding a central lane long enough for Sero's tape to pull Tokage's detached hand out of its throwing path. Kirishima got the hit, but Sero created the opening. Aizawa called "Report" Kirishima grinned, then corrected before the grin became too large.
"Sero opened it. I finished. cost. I almost chased the second hand and would have lost center" Sero gave him a thumbs-up.
"Assist not invisible" Kirishima pointed at him.
"Assist not invisible" Kurose wrote the phrase again under phase one. Uraraka scored by making a soft debris piece float across Kendo's line of sight, not as a shield, but as a timing break. Midoriya threw the ball, hit Kendo's side target, then immediately said "Uraraka opened it" before anyone asked. Aizawa looked at him.
"What did it cost?" Midoriya swallowed.
"I wanted to say we scored instead of I scored because that felt safer" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"And?"
"Both can be true. I threw. Uraraka opened""Good" Uraraka's shoulders lowered. Mina scored after Asui forced an opponent to change height. Iida scored only after shortening a route command to three words. Todoroki scored by making a smaller ice lip than his instinct wanted, forcing Pony's throw line down instead of freezing the whole lane. Every point came with a report. Every report made the point less magical and more usable. Then Kaminari scored by accident.
He had been trying to create a sound distraction with Jiro's timing call and panicked when Awase moved faster than expected. His throw clipped Awase's back target while Kaminari was shouting "Wrong hand wrong hand wrong hand" Aizawa called "Report" Kaminari looked horrified.
"I scored by fear" Jiro said "No. I called timing. You threw badly but in the correct window" Kaminari blinked.
"That is better and worse" Aizawa said "Report it correctly" Kaminari inhaled.
"Jiro opened it with timing call. I threw in the window. cost. panic made my aim sloppy and my words useless" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Kaminari looked at Awase.
"Sorry for yelling about hands" Awase shrugged.
"It was confusing but not offensive""Good? Sorry. no. accepted" Jiro patted his shoulder once. Private pride was probably imminent. Phase two added Class 1-B as active opposition and support. The board changed. ASSIST TO POINTASSIST MUST BE NAMEDPOINT MUST BE CLAIMEDCOST MUST BE MAPPED Kendo looked at the board.
"That applies to both classes" Aizawa said "Yes" Monoma lifted a hand.
"If I assist a Class 1-A point against my own class, is that treason or education?" Vlad King said "It depends whether you are doing it on purpose" Monoma smiled.
"Ambiguous morality. Excellent" Kendo said "No treason""Oppressed by loyalty" The drill paired mixed teams against rotating opponents. Yaoyorozu opened a point for Tetsutetsu by creating a non-slip panel under his foot before he charged. Tetsutetsu hit Kirishima's shoulder target and immediately shouted "Yaoyorozu opened it!" at a volume that made Recovery Girl glare. Kirishima laughed.
"Good hit!" Aizawa said "No congratulating being hit until report" Kirishima straightened.
"Right. cost. I braced center too long and exposed shoulder" Good. Kendo opened a point for Uraraka by feinting a close-range strike, forcing Tokage to pull her split parts back toward defense. Uraraka hit the exposed target with a clean throw. Uraraka reported "Kendo opened it. I finished. cost. I delayed because I expected her to take the point herself" Kendo nodded.
"Trust the assist" Kurose wrote: TRUST THE ASSIST Midoriya stared at that one. Aizawa saw.
"Midoriya" He flinched.
"Yes?"
"Do not make it a life philosophy during the drill""Yes, sir" Bakugo opened a point for Todoroki by blasting a low smoke line and not chasing through it. Todoroki used the obscured angle to tag Pony. The room froze because Bakugo had assisted and Todoroki had accepted it without turning it into weather. Aizawa called "Report" Todoroki said "Bakugo opened the sightline by refusing chase. I scored. cost. minimal" Bakugo snapped "Minimal?" The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
Todoroki looked at him.
"Do you prefer dramatic?"
"No""Then minimal" Bakugo seemed genuinely trapped. Kaminari whispered "That was beautiful" Jiro whispered "It was weirdly beautiful" The mixed phase ended with better scoring and worse emotions. Good. Then Aizawa wrote the third phase. PROVISIONAL TRACK DIRECT SCORE The gym quieted. Ren looked at the words. Direct score. Not assist. Not containment. Not surviving. Score. His wrist patch pulsed. Gate this time. He pressed two fingers.
"Stop" The gate narrowed. Pain stayed. Recovery Girl looked up.
"Map""Gym Gamma. chair. board. direct score. left wrist gate local. shoulder. ribs. pressure. map present""Good" Aizawa waited until the monitor settled. Then spoke.
"Ren. Shinso. You both need direct scoring pathways. Not because assists are invisible. Because the first stage may demand direct eliminations. You will not abandon your roles to chase points. You will develop scoring that fits your roles" Shinso looked at his hands.
"What if my cleanest scoring path is Brainwashing?" Aizawa answered "Then you train when it is appropriate and when it is not" Kurose added "And you train how to score without it so you do not become trapped by needing a response" Shinso nodded.
"Accepted" Ren looked at Aizawa.
"My cleanest scoring path is misread" Aizawa nodded.
"Yes""Stationary is not finished""Correct""Chair shot" Bakugo barked "Candidate shot" Ren looked at him.
"Candidate shot" Aizawa looked almost satisfied.
"Phase three has two parts. Direct score without Quirk escalation. Direct score with permitted Quirk condition" Recovery Girl said "For Ren, Graft Lattice bracing only under pre-approved safety condition. No scoring through pain suppression" Ren said "Accepted" Shinso said "For me, Brainwashing only if opponent answers in active candidate exchange and verbal or movement option is insufficient or chosen as the objective of the run" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Kendo stepped forward.
"I will oppose Shinso first" Shinso looked at her.
"You keep volunteering for unpleasant roles" Kendo smiled.
"Class representative disease" Iida looked interested. Kendo pointed at him.
"Do not catch it harder" The first Shinso run was no Brainwashing. Kendo knew not to answer him. He knew she knew. That made it useful. The target field was thirty seconds. Three targets each. One hit objective. Aizawa said "Begin" Kendo pressed immediately, large hands creating close-range threat. Shinso backed, scarf low. He did not ask questions. He used the collar to project a sharp "left" toward the far wall. Kendo did not answer. She did glance left. Barely. Not enough for Brainwashing. Enough for motion.
Shinso threw low. Kendo blocked with one hand and advanced. He snapped the scarf toward her wrist, not to bind fully, just to change her guard. She adjusted. He used the scarf's recoil to pull his body sideways, then flicked a training ball from his other hand toward her lower side target. Hit. Aizawa called "Point" Kendo smiled.
"Clean" Shinso breathed.
"Report. no Quirk. voice direction created micro-reaction. scarf changed guard. I scored. cost. throat minimal. shoulder mild" Kurose wrote: MICRO-REACTION IS A WINDOW Kaminari whispered "That sounds like something in Midoriya's notebooks" Midoriya, notebook closed, whispered back "It is taking all my strength" Jiro whispered "Stay strong" Second Shinso run allowed Brainwashing as the objective. His opponent was Monoma. Everyone understood why. Monoma stood in the field, hands raised dramatically.
"At last, the ethical trap meets the theatrical fool" Kendo said "Do not enjoy being bait""I was born as commentary on bait" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Objective. Score using Brainwashing if appropriate. Make use legible" Shinso nodded. His throat felt tight. Map. Gym Gamma. field. Monoma. collar neutral. scarf. hands. throat. irritation. Quirk available. map present. Aizawa said "Begin" Monoma moved in a wide arc, deliberately silent. Shinso did not chase. He let the silence stretch. Monoma smiled and threw first. Shinso dodged, scarf catching the edge of the ball and dropping it. No question. No answer. Monoma's eyes narrowed.
Shinso said "You are worse quiet" Monoma's mouth opened on instinct.
"Am I?" Brainwashing took. Not dramatic. Stillness. Shinso moved immediately.
"Hold position" He threw. The ball struck Monoma's chest target.
"Release" Monoma blinked. Then looked down at the detached target.
"Oh, that is humiliating" Shinso spoke before anyone else.
"Quirk used because opponent answered active candidate exchange. single hold command. score taken. released immediately" Aizawa nodded.
"Report""Gym Gamma. Quirk activated once. no voice modulation. command hold position. released. throat fine. discomfort moderate. no regret. map present" Kurose wrote: POWER USED. REASON NAMED. END NAMED. Kendo looked at Monoma.
"Actor report" Monoma looked offended.
"I was not acting. I was tragically myself""Report" He sighed.
"I knew I answered. I lost the moment after. Explanation was immediate. I am annoyed at myself, not unclear on his conduct" Shinso stared. That was a good report. Unfortunately. Aizawa looked at him.
"Good" Shinso's jaw tightened. Ren spoke softly from the side.
"Used is not worse than withheld if reason is clean" The gym went still. Shinso looked at him. Then nodded once.
"Disgusting""Accurate""Unfortunately" Recovery Girl muttered "Shared vocabulary disease" Then it was Ren's turn. The first direct score run was no Graft Lattice bracing beyond baseline chair movement. His opponent was Tokage again. She stepped into the field with three training balls and a grin.
"No weird body pressure angles?" Ren said "Accepted""No wheel targets?"
"Accepted""No medical questions?"
"Accepted""Extremely annoying?" Ren paused.
"Limited" Tokage sighed.
"Oppressed by ethics" Aizawa said "Begin" Tokage split immediately. Ren did not move for the first second. Stationary. Tokage did not fall for it this time. Good. She had learned. That meant the misread had to change. She sent one hand high, one low, her main body circling toward the chair-side target. Ren reversed half a meter. Not enough to dodge. Enough to set angle. He threw once at the floating hand. Missed. Good. The miss made Tokage grin.
"There it is" She sent the hand toward his back target. Ren turned the chair too slowly to defend it. On purpose. Tokage committed. Ren's second ball came from his lap, not side pouch, low and late. It did not aim at her main body. It aimed at the detached hand carrying her ball. It struck the hand just enough to alter its release. Her ball missed. His ball bounced off the wall panel behind and clipped the lower target on her main body as she stepped into the angle. Hit. The gym went silent. Tokage stared.
"You used a miss as a lane?" Ren breathed.
"Report. first throw made false pattern. second altered hand release and rebound angle. scored on main body. cost. no Graft Lattice. wrist mild. chair stable" Aizawa's eyes were sharp. Kurose wrote: A MISS CAN BE INFORMATION Bakugo stared at the board. Then at Ren.
"That was nasty" Ren looked at him.
"Good?" Bakugo grinned.
"Good" Recovery Girl said "Do not let Bakugo good override medical caution" Ren said "It never does" Bakugo looked offended.
"It should sometimes""No""Coward""Patient" Kirishima whispered "That was kind of cool" Mina whispered "Kind of?" Jiro whispered "Contain it" Second Ren run allowed a controlled Graft Lattice brace only if the score window required a safe chair shift and the gate remained local. His opponent was Kendo. Ren looked at her.
"You are fair" Kendo nodded.
"And hard""Yes""Good" Aizawa said "Objective. Direct score with permitted brief brace if needed. stop before maximum. no scoring through pain absence" Ren nodded. Map. Gym Gamma. chair. Kendo. target vest. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. fear. want. gate quiet. map present. Aizawa said "Begin" Kendo advanced with less trickery than Tokage and more inevitability. Her hands made close-range defense difficult. She threw one ball early to force Ren's chair left. Ren reversed instead. She expected it.
Her second throw cut toward his side target. Ren could take the hit and stay safe. But the objective was direct score. Scoring is not betrayal. He moved the chair forward. Unexpected. Kendo's eyes changed. Ren entered the space she had not expected him to take. Not fast. Not reckless. Forward by one meter. His wrist patch pulsed. Gate. He said "Stop" The gate narrowed. Pain stayed. He used the local brace through wrist and shoulder to pivot the chair in a controlled half-turn, not sharp, not wide.
The movement exposed his back target for half a second. Kendo saw it. She threw. Ren let the chair's momentum finish the turn and released his training ball from low right. Kendo's throw grazed his back target. Did not detach. His ball hit her side target. Hit. Aizawa called "Point" Recovery Girl said "Map now" Ren's hand dropped to the blanket.
"Gym Gamma. chair. left wrist gate local. shoulder braced. ribs quiet. back target grazed. pain present. scored. stopped within movement. map present" Recovery Girl looked at the monitor.
"Acceptable. no third Ren scoring run" Ren nodded. He did not argue. That was probably the most shocking performance of the day. Kendo walked over.
"You moved forward" Ren looked up.
"Yes""I expected reverse""Visibility can be used back" She smiled.
"Good" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"If you only reverse, they farm you" Ren nodded.
"Yes""If you only stop, they farm that too" Ren looked at him. Bakugo's face was serious in the way it became when something was too important to say correctly.
"So stop and shoot" Recovery Girl said "Within limits" Bakugo snapped "I know, hag!" The gym died. Recovery Girl slowly lifted her cane. Bakugo realized several things. Too late. Kirishima whispered "It was nice knowing you" Recovery Girl said "I will ignore that because the strategic content was correct and because paperwork for murder is tedious" Bakugo looked like he had survived divine judgment by accident. Ren's mouth twitched. Ribs. Pain present. Good. The final drill was pair scoring.
Ren and Shinso against Kendo and Monoma again. Not survival. Score objective. One point each from Ren and Shinso or one direct point and one assist-to-point made legible. Aizawa looked at them.
"Do not force symmetry" Ren said "Accepted" Shinso said "Accepted" The buzzer sounded. Kendo pressed Ren immediately. Monoma stayed silent near Shinso. Interesting. He had learned. Good. Shinso did not chase words. Ren moved backward. Kendo expected forward now. Good. Ren had two possible patterns and neither was permanent. Monoma threw at Shinso's side target. Shinso blocked with scarf and did not return. Instead, he used the scarf to redirect the fallen ball toward Ren's lane. Not a pass. An opening. Ren saw.
Kendo saw too late. Ren's chair turned stationary at the edge of Kendo's approach. He did not throw at her. He threw at the redirected ball. The collision changed its path enough to strike Kendo's lower target. Hit. Aizawa called "Point. report later. continue" Kendo's eyes widened.
"Assist rebound" Shinso said "Assist not invisible" Monoma smiled.
"Then I should remove the assistant" He moved toward Shinso with two balls and no words. Shinso backed. No Quirk. No answer. Monoma's silence was good now. Annoying. Shinso's collar pulsed throat strain as he almost shouted. He lowered his voice.
"Ren. shape" Ren answered "Stationary not finished" Monoma's eyes flicked toward Ren's chair. That was the answer Shinso needed. Not verbal. Attention. Shinso threw low. Monoma blocked. Ren threw from the chair, not at Monoma's target, but at his footline. Monoma shifted back by reflex. Shinso's second throw hit his side target. Point. Aizawa called "End" The buzzer sounded. Both points achieved. No Brainwashing. No unsafe brace. One assist rebound. One attention split. Shinso exhaled.
"Report. Ren opened second point by forcing footline shift. I scored. cost. no Quirk. throat mild. map present" Ren said "Report. Shinso opened first point by redirecting ball into lane. I scored through rebound. cost. wrist mild. no gate spread. map present" Kurose wrote: SCORE WITHOUT ROLE LOSS Aizawa nodded.
"That is the lesson" Kaminari raised a hand.
"So direct points can still be teamwork?" Aizawa said "Yes" Kaminari looked relieved. Then suspicious.
"But direct means direct""Direct point means who struck the target. It does not mean the target opened itself" Yaoyorozu said "The hit is individual. The window can be collective" Kurose wrote that. HIT INDIVIDUAL. WINDOW COLLECTIVE. Mina whispered "That is beautiful" Bakugo muttered "It is strategy" Todoroki said "Strategy can be beautiful" Bakugo pointed at him.
"Stop making things worse" Todoroki looked confused.
"I thought I improved it" Jiro sighed.
"You did both" Training ended with the board full. SURVIVING IS NOT PASSINGSCORING IS NOT BETRAYALASSISTS ARE NOT INVISIBLEPOINT MUST BE CLAIMEDCOST MUST BE MAPPEDMICRO-REACTION IS A WINDOWA MISS CAN BE INFORMATIONHIT INDIVIDUAL. WINDOW COLLECTIVE. SCORE WITHOUT ROLE LOSS Ren stared at the last line. Score without role loss. His wrist stayed quiet. Good. Shinso looked at it too. No power used in pair scoring. Power used cleanly once in direct scoring. Both valid.
Used was not worse than withheld if reason was clean. Withheld was not absent. Scoring was not betrayal. Annoying. Useful. After the module, Ren slept for twenty-six minutes. Not collapse. Sleep. When he woke, Hana was sitting at his desk reading the board, and Daichi was quietly labeling a folder. Ren blinked.
"What folder?" Daichi looked guilty.
"Score windows" Ren stared.
"You made folder""Temporary""Everything is temporary until it is not" Daichi nodded solemnly.
"Family tradition" Recovery Girl said from the doorway "Do not let folders multiply without approval" Ren looked at the folder. SCORE WINDOWS He thought of the first missed throw, the rebound, the forward movement, the side target he did not protect, the direct point that did not feel like theft.
"Keep" Daichi smiled.
"Accepted" Ren added a line to his desk board. SCORING IS NOT BETRAYAL Then another. A MISS CAN BE INFORMATION Across the wing, Shinso added: USED IS NOT WORSE THAN WITHHELD IF THE REASON IS CLEAN Then, after a pause: HIT INDIVIDUAL. WINDOW COLLECTIVE. He stared at the second line. Direct point did not mean alone. That was good. Suspicious. Useful. At dinner, Class 1-A discussed scoring with the intensity of people who had discovered that points were not simple and were offended by it.
Bakugo insisted every point should be claimed cleanly. Yaoyorozu agreed and expanded the concept until Bakugo regretted opening the door. Midoriya almost wrote a full taxonomy of score windows and stopped after Aizawa appeared behind him like a moral consequence. Uraraka and Asui practiced calling assist names over rice bowls. Kaminari declared his accidental scoring style "panic geometry" and was banned from naming techniques for the night.
Todoroki asked whether a miss becoming information meant mistakes could be strategic if understood. Aizawa, passing through, said "Yes. But do not miss on purpose until you know why" Todoroki nodded like this was a valuable tea instruction. Ren came to dinner for eight minutes. Eight. The patch did not pulse until seven fifty. He left at eight anyway because round numbers were starting to look like proof. Bakugo noticed.
"Eight is suspicious" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Ugly numbers better""Yes""Try seven forty-three next time" Ren considered.
"Maybe" Kaminari whispered "We are scheduling ugly numbers now" Jiro whispered "It is healthier than your technique names" Shinso, at the edge of the table, ate quietly. At one point, Monoma's voice echoed from the hallway because Class 1-B was leaving late training and he had apparently found an excuse to be audible.
"Tell Akiyama the rebound shot was offensive to prediction itself!" Kendo's voice followed.
"Stop yelling through dorm corridors" Ren looked toward the hall. Shinso said "Compliment" Ren said "Terrible delivery" Bakugo snorted.
"Useful content" The table went quiet. Then Mina whispered "Communal disease" Aizawa appeared at the door.
"Eat" Everyone obeyed. That night, the exam date remained on the common board. September 2. Still waiting. Still sharp. But beneath it, someone had added a line from the day. DO NOT BECOME SOMEONE ELSE FOR POINTS No one admitted writing it. Ren suspected Kurose. Shinso suspected Aizawa. Kaminari claimed it might have been the bucket. The bucket remained in storage and could not defend itself. In the quiet, after the lights dimmed and doors checked open and closed, Provisional Track became a little more real.
Not because Ren scored. Not because Shinso scored. Because they scored without turning into someone else's idea of a candidate. A chair could create a lane. A missed throw could become information. A voice could hold power or use it cleanly. A point could belong to one hand and still carry the shape of everyone who opened it. The exam would count targets. Fine. Let it count. They would learn to make the count tell the truth.
