Chương 88: The Shelter Route

The main hall had not been designed to feel like a battlefield. That was the first lie the attack corrected. A room did not need blood on the floor to become part of a fight. It only needed routes. Doorways. Windows. Too many bodies carrying fear through too little space. A medical path that could be blocked by one panicked student standing in the wrong place. A stairwell that could become a trap if someone decided to run upstairs because danger sounded louder outside.
A table that was harmless until it stopped a stretcher. A window that was just a window until smoke became weather. Ren sat against the wall in the recovery zone with both hands open on his knees. Right palm hot. Left palm hot. Forearms warm beneath his sleeves. No ridging. No thread. No lattice. No movement. He repeated the facts in order because facts were the railing now. Smoke visible. Villain presence confirmed. Midoriya and Kota engaged with heavy hostile. Bakugo public target association.
Group Two smoke separation risk. Relay transferred to Thirteen. Kurose in command of conditional shelter. Shinso assigned disruption support. Ren removed from deck by request. Role modified. Modified. Not ended. That mattered. Kurose crouched in front of him, close enough that he could focus on her instead of the windows.
"Status""Red-edge decreasing. High bilateral palm heat. Forearms warm. No ridging. No lattice. No image stable. Usefulness pressure high""Action""Remain seated until reassessed. Report if image stabilizes. No independent movement""Good" The word did not comfort him. It did something better. It held the shape of the next minute. Behind Kurose, the main hall moved. Not chaos. Not order either. Something between the two, built from frightened students and trained adults turning fear into lanes.
Ragdoll stood near the center with a clipboard and a voice bright enough to cut through panic without pretending panic was silly. Thirteen controlled the outer doorway, their black suit a fixed point against the movement. Sano stood beside the inner wall holding exactly one signal card, because Arai had taken the rest before he could become a paper-based hazard. Kenta checked the benches and tables, making sure nothing blocked the medical path.
Arai was already making a list of doors, windows, vents, and supply locations with the expression of someone relieved to have systems to hate. Shinso stood near the main doorway. Not in front of it. Near it. Enough to redirect, not enough to block. A first-year from 1-B tried to push past him toward the hall that led outside.
"My class is still out there!" Shinso stepped sideways.
"Staff knows""Move!" Shinso did not use his Quirk. Not yet. He put one hand on the wall, making himself a route marker instead of a wall.
"If you leave, staff gets one more missing student" The student froze. His face twisted.
"They're still out there""Yes" Shinso said "So do not make the count worse" The student's knees shook. Ragdoll appeared beside him with impossible speed and gentleness.
"Name" He gave it. She checked the list.
"Your group is with Pixie-Bob. Confirmed moving east route. You stay here" He stayed. Shinso's jaw flexed once. No sarcasm. Good. Ren's palm heat dropped one degree. Maybe because Shinso had acted. Maybe because the room had not broken. Maybe because his body did not know how to separate those things. Kurose noticed.
"Heat trend""High to high-moderate. Still bilateral. No ridging""Good. You can assist verbally from recovery position if I request. No unsolicited calls unless direct safety image stabilizes" Ren nodded.
"Accepted" It was the closest thing to permission he had. It felt like air through a narrow gap. Thirteen's voice came from the doorway.
"Smoke direction shifting west to southwest. Not at lodge yet" Mandalay's voice came through the staff channel.
"Group Three nearing lodge. Aizawa diverting west. Tiger still engaged. Pixie-Bob holding east route. Group Two moving under smoke risk. Group One split. Midoriya and Kota still at ridge" Midoriya and Kota still at ridge. Ren's right palm flared. He opened his fingers wider.
"Heat spike. Midoriya-Kota update. No new image. No movement" Recovery Girl's voice came from the tablet.
"Hands open""They are""Eyes on Kurose" Ren looked at Kurose. Not the window. Not smoke. Not the hallway. Kurose's eyes were steady. That was her Quirk, maybe. Not in the biological sense. In the human sense.
"Stay in the room you can affect" she said Ren breathed. The room he could affect. Not the ridge. Not the forest. Not the boy under a heavy hostile's shadow. The hall. The shelter route. The air path. The doors. The students. The next safe action. A new smell slid beneath the lodge's normal scents. Smoke? No. Not exactly. Ren's whole body went still. It was not the dry burn from last night. This was sharper. Chemical. Bitter. Wrong in a way fire was not wrong.
His nose caught it for half a second and then lost it under wood and fear. His left forearm warmed. Image flicker. A mask. Round lenses. Yellow-gray air between trees. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. Students coughing. No name. No certainty. Safety-actionable.
"Image fragment. Air hazard possible. Gas mask or chemical smoke. Not just fire. Low-confidence but safety-actionable. Request ventilation review" Arai's head snapped up. Kurose did not hesitate.
"Arai. Systems" Arai moved to the window list.
"Windows closed in main hall. Kitchen vents active. East side storage vent open. Lower corridor window cracked" Kenta said "Medical path passes lower corridor" Thirteen turned.
"Closing vents that can be closed without leaving protected area" Ragdoll pointed to two students.
"You and you. With me. No running" Shinso lifted one hand.
"Door traffic holds. No one exits while vents are adjusted" A student near the side door protested.
"But smoke is outside, why close everything?" Ren answered because Kurose looked at him.
"If air hazard is chemical, not fire smoke alone, open paths carry it faster" The student went pale. Kurose added "This is precautionary. Not panic" Arai closed the lower corridor window with a cloth over her hand. Kenta shifted a bench away from the vent access. Ragdoll closed the storage vent. Thirteen sealed the side gap with emergency tape from the supply kit. The smell did not return. Maybe it had never been real. Maybe it had. The room changed anyway. More sealed. More aware. Ren reported.
"Air hazard call complete. Heat high-moderate. No new image. No compensation urge" Recovery Girl said "Good" Aizawa's radio crackled.
"West smoke includes irritant component. Unknown source. Lodge precaution correct" The hall went quiet for one heartbeat. Then movement resumed. Arai looked at Ren. Not grateful. Focused.
"Air hazard entered system list" Ren nodded.
"Good" Sano held up his one card. AIR IS A ROUTE TOO Kurose looked at him.
"When did you make that?" Sano's face went blank.
"Emotionally before physically" Arai took the card, looked at it, then placed it on the wall near the window list.
"Useful" Sano whispered "I live" Another radio burst cut through. Mandalay.
"Group Three reached lodge perimeter" The outer door opened under Thirteen's control. Todoroki entered first, one hand lifted, eyes scanning behind him. Yaoyorozu followed, breathing hard but upright. Tokoyami came in with Dark Shadow tight around him, agitated but contained. Shoji came last, arms expanded to shield the doorway until Thirteen closed it. Smoke clung faintly to their clothes. Real. Ren's palms pulsed. No ridges. No movement. Todoroki saw him. Then saw Kurose between him and the door.
Understanding crossed his face. He did not ask the wrong question. He said "Status?" Ren answered.
"High-moderate heat. No lattice. Air hazard call made. You?" Todoroki blinked once. Then answered because maybe camp had infected everyone.
"Yellow-red. Smoke. Heat control stable. No injury. Useful people can still be unsafe" Ren nodded. That last part was not about the forest only. Yaoyorozu looked toward Arai's window list and immediately stepped into sequence.
"What needs support?" Arai handed her the paper.
"Vent paths closed except kitchen. Supply closet has cloth and water. Medical path clear but narrow" Yaoyorozu did not try to take over everything. Progress.
"I can make additional door seals if staff authorizes" Thirteen said "Authorize two. Prioritize lower corridor and kitchen service gap" Yaoyorozu moved. Todoroki looked toward the windows. Aizawa's voice came through the radio.
"Todoroki. Stay inside unless directed" Todoroki's jaw tightened.
"Yes sir" Ren recognized the shape. Wanting to go back because fire outside made every part of him feel named. Not his door. But visible. He said "Shoto" Todoroki looked at him.
"Heat inside matters too" Todoroki's eyes sharpened. Then he nodded.
"I know" He moved toward the kitchen gap. Small controlled cold around the seal edge. Not ice across the door. Not a wall. A boundary. Good. The main hall held. Then the next wave hit. Not smoke. Sound. A scream from outside, sharp and high, cut through the sealed room before the door fully muted it. Several students turned. One moved toward the doorway. Shinso stepped into the path.
"Stop" The student did not.
"My friend!" Shinso looked at Kurose. Kurose's voice was immediate.
"Authorized. Purpose: stop unsafe exit. No humiliation. Release on staff command" The student shoved forward.
"Move!" That was an answer. Shinso's eyes changed.
"Stop. Face me. Breathe" The student froze. Turned. Breathed. The room froze with him. Shinso's face went pale. Kurose moved beside the student.
"Release" Shinso released. The student swayed. Ragdoll caught his shoulder.
"You are safe here. Your friend is with staff. Name" He gave it. His voice shook. Shinso stepped back. Hands open.
"Status. Yellow-red. Quirk used under authorization. No pressure. Disgust. Relief" Aizawa was not in the room, but his voice came through Kurose's radio as if summoned by moral discomfort.
"Good use" Shinso's face twisted.
"I hate that" Ren said "Both true" Shinso looked at him. Then nodded once. The shelter route held. Outside, the forest did not. Mandalay's next broadcast made every student in the hall stop breathing.
"Midoriya and Kota. Still alive. Young Midoriya heavily injured. Hostile still active. No staff arrival yet" Ren's body tried to leave the room again. It was not a thought. It was older than thought. The body heard child and injured friend and no staff and tried to become a bridge. Kurose's hand caught his shoulder before he rose. He had moved more this time. Not far. Enough.
"Status" she said The word hurt. He forced his hands open.
"Red-edge. Movement impulse. High bilateral heat. No ridging. No lattice. Midoriya-Kota trigger. No new image" Recovery Girl's voice was hard.
"Remove from wall. Chair with back support" Ren wanted to argue. He did not. Kenta brought the chair before anyone asked. Quiet routes. Ren sat. Back supported. Hands on knees. Not useful enough. No. Use the room.
"Request one allowed call if new image stabilizes" Recovery Girl said "Denied unless image is new and directly safety-actionable. You are at limit" The denial hit like a closed door. It was correct. He hated it.
"Accepted" Todoroki looked toward him from the kitchen gap. Midoriya's name had struck him too. Uraraka was not in the hall yet. Iida was not. They were still outside with Group One, ordered to hold. The people who would want most to go to Midoriya were also being held by structure. Ren clung to that. Not alone in restraint. Mandalay's face appeared on a wall monitor now, patched through by Ragdoll. She was outside somewhere, not at the deck, hair wind-shifted, eyes focused. She spoke to the hall.
"Kota is being protected. Midoriya is engaging. Staff moving. No student leaves lodge without direct order" A first-year whispered "But if he dies?" The question went through the hall like cold. Ren's heat pulsed. Shinso looked at the student but did not answer. Todoroki closed his eyes once. Yaoyorozu's hands shook around the seal material. Kurose spoke.
"If you leave and create another rescue, you do not save him. You divide help" The student cried silently. Ragdoll guided them to a bench. Kurose did not soften the truth. Good. Terrible. Good. The next impact from the ridge was distant enough to be felt only as a low tremor through the floorboards. Ren's mind gave him an image. Green. A fist breaking. A boy refusing to stop. A child screaming. The heavy hostile's arm expanding with impossible muscle. No name. The image did not give a call. It only gave pain.
He reported.
"Image. Midoriya direct impact. No actionable call. Heat high. No movement" Recovery Girl said "Good reporting. No call" No call. The worst kind of data. He breathed through it. Mandalay's voice shifted suddenly.
"Kota used Quirk" The hall changed. Ren's eyes lifted. Kota. Used Quirk. Water. Small hands. Not helpless. The pressure broke differently. Not relief. Not safety. A child who hated heroes had acted. Ren's heat dipped from high to high-moderate.
"Kota action trigger. Heat decreasing. No movement" Mandalay continued, voice strained with effort and something like awe.
"Midoriya moving. Hostile destabilized. Staff still en route" Then the forest roared again. A shock of force rolled through the mountain. Not explosion. Impact. Massive. The windows shuddered. Students gasped. Todoroki stepped instinctively toward the door. Yaoyorozu caught his sleeve. He stopped. Good. Shinso blocked the inner path when two students stood too fast. Good. Ren gripped his knees. Open hands. Open. Open. Mandalay's silence lasted too long. No one spoke.
Even Bakugo was not there to turn fear into noise. Finally, her voice came through.
"Hostile down" For one second, the hall did not understand. Then she repeated.
"Hostile down. Midoriya alive. Kota alive. Midoriya critically injured but conscious. Staff moving to extraction" The room exhaled all at once. Ren's body went cold. Heat vanished too fast. Not gone. Dropped. He swayed. Kurose caught his shoulder.
"Status""Heat drop. Dizziness. Relief shock. No lattice" Recovery Girl snapped "Head down" He leaned forward. The floor swam. Not fainting. Almost. A chair could be heroic by existing. He hated that. Loved it. Kurose's hand stayed on his back.
"Breathe" He breathed. Midoriya alive. Kota alive. Hostile down. Critically injured. Alive. The words became a route. Not safe. Route. Ren whispered "Alive first" Kurose heard.
"Yes" Shinso heard too. From the doorway, he said "Explain later" Ren closed his eyes. The words returned from Hosu. Alive first. Explain later. The room continued moving. Because the attack was not over. That was the cruelty of relief in a multi-front emergency. One child saved did not end the forest. Mandalay's next update cut through the hall before relief could become softness.
"Group Two under active separation attempt. Smoke thickening east. Unknown hostile targeting Bakugo. Kirishima and Sero maintaining visual. Kaminari impaired by irritant" Bakugo. Ren opened his eyes. Heat returned. Not as high. Focused. Public target association. Smoke. Separation. He had already warned. Did not mean enough.
"Status. Yellow-red. Bakugo target association reactivated. Moderate palm heat. No new image yet. I am at call limit" Kurose nodded.
"Then no call unless new" He hated it. Accepted. Todoroki looked toward the door again. Kurose said "Todoroki. You are not assigned east" He stopped before moving.
"Yes" Yaoyorozu finished a door seal and turned to Kurose.
"What support can we provide from here?" Good. Sequence. Kurose answered "Shelter route and medical reception. Midoriya extraction may come through west entrance. Prepare space. Todoroki, temperature stabilization. Yaoyorozu, clean cloth and splint materials. Kenta, route. Arai, surface. Shinso, doorway. Sano, signal" The safe zone shifted again. Not waiting. Preparing. Ren sat in the chair and realized the room had become a body. Kenta cleared benches. Arai wiped a table and placed supplies by category.
Yaoyorozu created clean supports and cloth. Todoroki cooled the air around the prepared medical space without freezing anything. Sano placed one card on the wall, hands shaking. ALIVE FIRST No one corrected him. Shinso stood at the inner doorway, pale but steady. The shelter route held for the injured before the injured arrived. That was rescue too. Ren reported softly.
"Safe zone preparing for extraction. Heat moderate. Usefulness pressure manageable. No movement" Kurose said "Good" Minutes later, the west door opened under Thirteen's control. Mandalay entered first, face tight. Behind her, Tiger carried Midoriya. Kota followed. Small. Shaking. Covered in dirt. Eyes fixed on Midoriya like if he looked away, alive would stop being true. Midoriya was conscious. Barely. His arm hung wrong. His face was bloodied. His body looked like a list of decisions Recovery Girl would hate.
But his eyes moved. They found the hall. Then, somehow, Ren. Midoriya tried to smile. It failed. Ren's heat spiked and broke into cold again.
"Status. Midoriya visual. Heat drop. No movement. No call" Recovery Girl's voice on the tablet became lethal.
"Medical space. Now" Tiger placed Midoriya where directed. Thirteen moved with clinical precision. Kurose guided students back. Yaoyorozu handed supports without needing to be asked twice. Todoroki kept temperature stable. Kenta kept the path clear. Arai passed supplies. Sano held the alive first card against his own chest now because maybe it was holding him up too. Kota stood near the edge. No one touched him. Good. He looked like touch would shatter him or make him bite. Mandalay crouched before him.
"Kota" He did not answer. His eyes were on Midoriya. Ren watched. Not his door. But the route had entered the room. Kota whispered "He came" No one moved.
"He came even though" The sentence broke. Ren's chest hurt. No heat. Just hurt. Midoriya, barely conscious, tried to lift his head. Recovery Girl's voice snapped from the tablet.
"Do not move!" Midoriya obeyed. Miracle. Kota's hands shook. Ren should not speak. Not to fix. Not to rescue. But the room needed a route for the child standing outside the medical space. Kurose looked at Ren. Permission? Maybe. Or checking if he would take it. Ren spoke quietly.
"Kota" The boy flinched. Looked at him. Ren kept his voice low.
"Alive first" Kota stared. The words from the card. From Hosu. From the route.
"Explain later" Ren said Kota's face collapsed. Not fully. Enough. Mandalay reached out. This time, Kota let her hand touch his shoulder. Ren looked away. Not his door. Not his wound. But the hall had held long enough for the child to enter it. That mattered. Outside, the east fight grew louder. Explosion. Metallic crash. Smoke against sealed windows. Group Two. Bakugo. The attack was not over. Ren's heat rose again. The room had no time to celebrate Midoriya's survival. The safe zone had to keep holding.
Kurose turned from the medical space to the map board Arai had dragged inside.
"Next front. East separation risk" Ren sat up. Recovery Girl said "Akiyama" He stopped. Kurose looked at him.
"You are not primary relay. But if a new direct fragment stabilizes, report" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Shinso's eyes met his from the doorway. Not handler. Not medical. Person standing on the floor. Ren's hands opened on his knees. The warning had become weather. The shelter route had held one extraction. Now smoke pressed against the next door. And somewhere in it, a boy who hated losing sight of anything was being hunted because the world had decided his anger made him visible. Ren breathed. One. Two. No movement. Not yet. But the safe zone was no longer quiet.
It was listening for the next route before the old one had finished shaking.
