Chương 140: First Response Pair
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~42 phút đọc · Tạo 10/09/2026
The first time Ren and Shinso were assigned as a pair, neither of them said anything for fourteen seconds. Aizawa timed it. He did not say he timed it. He stood beside the whiteboard in Gym Gamma with a marker in one hand, a stopwatch in the other, and the expression of a man who considered silence an acceptable starting point as long as it produced useful discomfort. Ren sat in his medical chair near the low-strain rescue station.
His wrist brace was secured but not tight, private feedback patch active, no public lights, no red alerts, no visible machine drama. His shoulder support lay under his training jacket, boring on purpose. A low-profile belt connected to the medical harness point at his chair, not to pull him upright, not to make him look more mobile, but to catch load if his body decided optimism had exceeded engineering.
Shinso stood two meters away with the training capture scarf around his shoulders and the first passive prototype of Hatsume's voice support gear resting against his throat. It was not a mask yet. He had refused anything that covered too much of his face on the first day. The device was a narrow collar band with two small directional microphone nodes and one private tactile indicator near the left side of his neck. No modulation. No voice samples. No Brainwashing indicator yet. No dramatic design.
Hatsume had described it as "conceptually restrained" and then nearly bitten her own hand to keep from saying more. Shinso distrusted it. Ren distrusted his brace. They respected each other's suspicion. Class 1-A stood across the gym in assigned observation positions. Not full participation. Not rescue support unless called. That was the first cruel part of the drill. The second cruel part was written on the board.
PAIR MODULE 1HELP WITHOUT TAKING OVER Under it: ResponderStabilizerAsk firstStop earlyReturn together Kaminari stared at the board.
"Help without taking over sounds personally targeted" Jiro said "It is class-targeted" Sero leaned toward Mina.
"Which means personally targeted at Kaminari" Mina whispered "And me" Iida, holding a clipboard he had been allowed to hold only after promising not to become a mobile constitution, nodded solemnly.
"And all of us, if we are honest" Bakugo muttered "I am not taking over. I am fixing incompetence" Kirishima said "That sounds like taking over with extra steps" Bakugo turned.
"You want to become step one?" Kirishima lifted both hands.
"Correction accepted" Todoroki looked at the board for a long moment.
"Help without taking over is difficult when the hazard is obvious" Aizawa's eyes moved to him.
"Good. Remember that" Midoriya stood with his notebook closed in both hands. Closed. Everyone who knew him noticed. No one said anything. Aizawa tapped the board.
"Scenario. One seated civilian actor, one panic civilian marker, one unstable support, one blocked low route, one false obvious solution. Ren and Shinso will respond as a pair. Class observes. No intervention unless I call for it or immediate safety requires it. If your body moves because you want to help, you will map that temptation afterward" Kaminari whispered "Even my legs have homework" Aizawa said "Especially yours" Kaminari looked betrayed by physics again. The civilian actor was not a real actor. U. A.
had learned better than throwing strangers into Provisional Track too early. The seated civilian was Sato, volunteering with consent, padded training sleeve around one arm, sitting beside a tilted wall panel. The panic civilian marker was Mina, also volunteering, kneeling near a blocked route with a bright orange card clipped to her sleeve that read PANIC RESPONSE SIMULATION. She had wanted to decorate the card. Kurose had refused. Mina had accepted under protest.
The unstable support was a foam-reinforced beam that looked easier to move than it was. The false obvious solution was an open route through the middle of the gym that would trigger a smoke marker if used too quickly. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Role" Ren breathed.
"Stabilizer. low-strain support. route assessment only if asked. no live command unless staff requests or emergency protocol" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Role" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Responder. verbal contact, consent check, panic reduction, Brainwashing only if prior protocol activates or immediate safety override and post-review""Pair route" Ren answered "Enter from left. Shinso contacts panic marker. I assess seated civilian and support. We confirm route before moving anyone. Return to chair and edge position""Stop authority" Ren and Shinso spoke together.
"Mine" They looked at each other. Shinso said "Unfortunately coordinated" Ren said "Disgusting" Aizawa nodded.
"Begin" For a second, nothing happened. Then Shinso moved. Not fast. That mattered. He approached Mina at an angle, stopping outside arm's reach. The collar band at his throat stayed dark. No indicator because no protocol mode was active. His voice carried clearly across the gym without needing volume.
"Mina. Simulation check. Do you want verbal grounding?" Mina's eyes flicked up. She was acting panic, but she was also Mina, which meant panic became dramatically expressive unless supervised.
"Yes""Do you want touch?"
"No""Accepted. Look at my hand if you want. You do not have to answer fast" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Kurose wrote. Ren watched Shinso's hands. Open. Visible. Not reaching. Good. Mina breathed quickly.
"The route is blocked. I can't get through. Sato is stuck. I should move the beam. I can move it. I can help. I can—" Shinso said "Your job is breathing and reporting. Not beam" Mina's face tightened.
"But I can help""You can. Not there" Mina's breathing hitched. Ren felt his own body lean toward the map. Beam. route. Sato. false path. Mina. Shinso. class. Aizawa. chair. harness. left wrist. gate quiet. His hand moved toward the wheel control. Recovery Girl, seated at the medical station, said nothing. Good. He had not moved beyond role. Yet. Shinso continued "Name three things you can see that are not the beam" Mina swallowed.
"Floor. your hand. orange card""Good. Name the route you are not taking""Middle route""Why?" Mina looked toward it.
"Too obvious" Kaminari whispered "She learned" Jiro elbowed him. Shinso's collar device gave a tiny pulse at his throat. Not public. Private. Voice strain reminder. He paused half a second. Good gear. Gear that asked. He looked toward Ren.
"Stabilizer. status?" Permission. Ren moved. The chair rolled forward under his own control, slow enough for the route, fast enough to count as entering. The harness line remained slack. His left hand rested on the wheel control. His right hand stayed free. He stopped beside Sato.
"Seated civilian. consent check" Sato nodded.
"Consent for shoulder contact and arm support" Ren looked at his padded sleeve.
"Touching right shoulder and left forearm. no lifting. stabilizing only""Accepted" Ren placed his left hand on Sato's shoulder. Pain. Present. The wrist gate flickered under the brace. The private patch pulsed once. He whispered "Stop" The gate narrowed. Pain stayed. No red light. No class stare. Sato looked at him but did not ask. Good volunteer. Ren placed his right forearm lightly against the tilted wall support, not to push, only to feel load. Graft Lattice woke in small threads across wrist, shoulder, ribs.
He breathed.
"Map. left wrist gate local. shoulder bracing. ribs quiet. civilian stable. support unstable but not falling. no movement yet" Aizawa called from the side.
"Good" Class 1-A stayed still. Mostly. Midoriya's foot shifted. Bakugo noticed. So did Aizawa. Midoriya froze. Aizawa said "Map temptation afterward" Midoriya nodded. Ren heard and did not look. Not his responsibility. Shinso looked toward the blocked route.
"Mina, can you report the blocked route without moving?" Mina inhaled.
"Low route blocked by beam. I can see gap on left. Maybe chair can fit but not if support drops" Ren looked. Gap on left. yes. Chair could fit. Sato could not be moved through without transferring weight. Beam looked movable but connected to false trigger wire. Obvious middle route too clean.
"Responder" Ren said Shinso looked at him.
"Stabilizer""I need beam information. Can panic marker see wire under right side?" Shinso turned back to Mina.
"Can you see under the right side of the beam from there?" Mina leaned without moving her knees.
"Yes. Red line. trigger maybe" Ren nodded.
"Beam cannot be moved by civilian. route left possible after support brace. Need wall stabilized first" Aizawa's eyes moved to Class 1-A. Several bodies wanted to move. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Kirishima's shoulders. Todoroki's left hand. Bakugo's palms. Yaoyorozu's fingers. All possible solutions. All not assigned. Shinso said "Need staff permission for class support?" Ren looked at Aizawa. Aizawa said "No class support.
Pair solves within low-strain limits or withdraws" Cruel. Correct. Ren looked at the wall support. The false obvious solution waited in the middle. He could not move the beam. Shinso could not move the beam. Sato could not be dragged. Mina could not help with beam. This was not a strength puzzle. Good. Annoying. Ren looked at the low route.
"Alternative. do not evacuate yet. stabilize in place. responder relocates panic marker to safe left corner. I keep seated civilian from shifting. call route blocked and wait for external support" Bakugo made a disgusted sound. Aizawa's scarf twitched.
"Class observes silently" Bakugo shut his mouth with visible violence. Shinso looked at Ren.
"That is not completion" Ren's chest tightened. The drill wanted rescue. The field wanted motion. The license exam would want results. A real civilian would want out. Sometimes out was not first.
"Stabilization is response" Shinso's eyes sharpened. Then he nodded.
"Accepted" Aizawa did not speak. That meant continue. Shinso turned to Mina.
"Mina. I cannot clear the route safely yet. Your job is to move to the left corner so you do not become second civilian. Do you want verbal count?" Mina's face did something real under the acting.
"Yes""Do you want me to walk with you or stand here?"
"Stand. Talk""Accepted. On three. one. two. three" Mina moved to the left corner. She did not touch the beam. Good. Shinso kept his hands visible.
"Stop there. Back to wall. Breathe. You are helping by not adding hazard" Mina swallowed.
"That is hard""Yes" Ren almost smiled. Good line. Sato shifted slightly when Mina moved. The wall panel tilted a fraction. Ren's wrist pain rose. Gate offered relief. Graft Lattice threaded across ribs, shoulder, forearm. Useful. Hold easier. He felt the patch pulse. He said "Stop" The gate narrowed but the wall still shifted. Not enough. He could let Pain Modulation lower more. No. He looked at Sato.
"Civilian, can you move your feet flat without lifting?" Sato answered "Yes""Do it on count. Shinso, verbal count" Shinso did not hesitate.
"One. two. three" Sato planted his feet. Weight shifted downward. The wall stopped moving. Ren breathed.
"Stability improved. no evacuation. call external support" Aizawa's voice cut through.
"Scenario pause" Everyone stopped. This time, Class 1-A stopped better. Bakugo looked furious. Midoriya looked like he had bitten the inside of his cheek. Todoroki looked thoughtful. Mina held the left wall and breathed. Sato stayed seated. Ren's hand remained on his shoulder. Aizawa said "Stabilizer. release plan" Ren answered "Sato maintains feet. I remove left hand first, right forearm second. harness remains. chair reverses one meter. body map after release""Proceed" Ren removed his left hand. Pain rose.
Present. Right forearm second. Chair back. One meter. He exhaled.
"Map. Gym Gamma. chair. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. gate local. pain present. no body-map loss. hunger moderate. frustration high" Recovery Girl said "Acceptable" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Responder map" Shinso looked irritated.
"Throat mild strain. no Quirk activation. collar pulse helpful and annoying. hands fine. temptation to use Brainwashing when Mina kept saying beam. did not" Kurose wrote that down fast. Mina looked over.
"You wanted to brainwash me?" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Yes" The room went still. He did not soften it. Good.
"Because I saw the fastest way to stop you moving toward the beam" Mina swallowed.
"Why didn't you?"
"You had consented to verbal grounding, not control. You were not in immediate physical motion toward the beam. I had another tool" Mina's eyes shone.
"Talking" Shinso looked deeply uncomfortable.
"Yes. Unfortunately" Kurose said "Good review" Shinso glared.
"Do not sound proud""I am proud and not making you manage it" He stared. Then looked away.
"Better" Aizawa turned to Class 1-A.
"Debrief. What happened?" Bakugo spoke first because of course he did.
"They failed the rescue" Aizawa said "No" Bakugo's eyes flashed.
"They did not move him" Aizawa pointed at Sato.
"Is he worse?" Bakugo's mouth shut. Aizawa looked at Sato.
"Actor report" Sato shifted carefully.
"As civilian, I felt stable. I knew why I was not moved. I knew Mina was not moving beam. I knew help was still needed but I was not being dragged into worse hazard" Aizawa looked back at Bakugo.
"Rescue is not always relocation" Bakugo looked away.
"Tch" Kirishima raised his hand.
"I wanted to go harden under the wall" Aizawa said "Temptation map" Kirishima nodded.
"Shoulders moved. legs loaded. I thought if I could physically solve it, I should. But that would have made their pair module about me""Good" Kirishima looked like praise had punched him. Todoroki raised his hand.
"I wanted to freeze the support" Aizawa said "And?"
"It would have stabilized the wall. It also might have made the seated civilian colder, narrowed the route, and removed the pair's decision" Ren looked at him. Todoroki did not look away.
"Good correction" Ren said Todoroki nodded.
"Thank you" Bakugo muttered "Everyone is thanking everyone. It is disgusting" Shinso said "You could try it and survive" Bakugo turned.
"Want to test survival?" Aizawa said "No fighting during gratitude discussion" Kaminari whispered "That sentence belongs on the board" Jiro whispered "Do not" Kurose wrote it anyway in the corner. Aizawa saw.
"No" She underlined it. Ren made the mistake of almost laughing. Ribs. Stop. Pain stayed. Uraraka raised her hand.
"I wanted to make Sato weightless when the wall shifted" Aizawa nodded.
"Problem?" She took a breath.
"I did not have consent from Sato in that role. And it might have changed his stability while Ren was using him as part of the support plan" Asui said "Also nausea after release" Uraraka nodded.
"Also that" Yaoyorozu looked at Ren and Shinso.
"You chose containment instead of extraction" Ren nodded.
"Yes""That may score poorly in some exams" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"Important" The room turned. Yaoyorozu continued "License scenarios often reward visible rescue progress. But if route is unsafe, containment is correct. We need language for communicating that to evaluators" Kurose wrote. Aizawa said "Good" Midoriya raised his hand. His notebook remained closed. Good.
"I wanted to move when the wall shifted. I thought Ren was going to overstrain" Recovery Girl said "He might have" Midoriya flinched. Ren looked at him.
"But?" Midoriya swallowed.
"But that was not my role. Aizawa-sensei had not called for support. If I moved, I might have changed the load path, startled Mina, or made Ren manage my help" The room was quiet. Aizawa nodded once.
"Good" Midoriya looked relieved. Then caught the relief and looked toward Ren. Ren said "Relief allowed. Not assigned to me" Midoriya blinked. Then nodded.
"Yes" Progress. Annoying. Important. Aizawa turned back to the pair.
"Second run. Same scenario, altered trigger" Ren's heart rate jumped. Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Medical check" Aizawa held up one hand.
"Question first" He looked at Ren.
"Do you want second run?" The room changed. Want. Not can. Not prove. Ren looked at Recovery Girl. She checked the monitor.
"Medically possible. Not medically necessary" Good answer. He looked at Hana and Daichi, seated near the medical wall. Hana looked scared. Daichi looked scared. Neither shook their head. He looked at Shinso. Shinso's expression was flat.
"You can say no and I will still be irritated at other things" Ren breathed. He did want second run. Not to prove. Mostly. To test containment language. To test pair timing. To test stop. To see if the first run had been luck. Dangerous. Honest.
"Yes. With lower contact time" Recovery Girl said "Condition?"
"Maximum hand contact three seconds. verbal stabilization after. no wall touch unless necessary" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Shinso said "My condition. No Brainwashing unless Mina crosses marked hazard line after verbal stop" Mina nodded from her position.
"Accepted" Aizawa reset the scenario. This time the panic marker was not Mina. It was Kaminari. The entire class reacted. Kaminari pointed at himself.
"Me?" Aizawa said "Yes""Because I am panic?"
"Because you volunteered yesterday for later" Kaminari looked trapped by past growth.
"Oh no. Development caught up" Shinso looked at him.
"Consent review" Kaminari swallowed.
"I volunteer as panic marker. I consent to verbal grounding. I do not consent to Brainwashing unless I cross the red hazard line after you say stop twice. My stop phrase is short circuit" Shinso nodded.
"Accepted" Kaminari looked pale. Jiro called from observation line.
"You can say no" Kaminari looked at her. He breathed.
"I know. I am saying yes because I want to stop making him responsible for my fear" Shinso went very still. Kurose looked down at her notes. Ren looked at Kaminari. Good. The second run began. Kaminari performed panic worse than Mina and better than expected because some of it was real. He talked too fast, pointed too much, and nearly stepped toward the red hazard line when the beam shifted. Shinso's voice cut through.
"Kaminari. Stop" Kaminari froze at the word. Not Quirk. Person. Good. He trembled. Shinso said "Look at the floor. Red line. Are your feet before it?" Kaminari looked.
"Yes""Good. Stay before it. Name your job""Not dying?" Jiro whispered "Accurate" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Acceptable first draft. More useful" Kaminari swallowed.
"Report hazards. Do not touch beam""Good" Ren moved in at the same time. Three seconds contact. Left hand to Sato's shoulder. Pain. Gate. Stop.
"Seated civilian stable. no wall touch. Kaminari reporting. route still blocked. containment recommended. external support needed" Sato shifted less this time. Ren released at two seconds. Not three. He backed the chair.
"Map. wrist gate local. pain present. no body-map loss. stopped before maximum because maximum became tempting" Recovery Girl nodded hard once. Aizawa looked at him.
"Good" Shinso reported next.
"Throat fine. collar did not pulse. no Quirk activation. temptation to prep Brainwashing when Kaminari moved. did not because feet stopped before line" Kaminari looked at him.
"Thank you for not doing it" Shinso looked uncomfortable.
"Thank you for stopping before line" Kaminari blinked. Then smiled.
"No meaning?" Shinso sighed.
"Minimal meaning""Accepted" Aizawa ended the drill there. No third run. No one argued. That was perhaps the clearest sign that the room was learning. The debrief moved to the board. Aizawa wrote: CONTAINMENT CAN BE RESCUENO POWER IF WORDS WORKSTOP BEFORE MAXIMUMROLE DOES NOT ERASE CARE The last line came from Uraraka. She had said it quietly after the second run, looking at the way Ren released early and Shinso kept watching Kaminari until he confirmed he could return to the group. Role does not erase care.
Aizawa had looked at Kurose. Kurose had written it first. Aizawa had transferred it to the main board. Mina looked at it.
"That is good" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"It is obvious" Asui said "Obvious things need writing when people ignore them" Bakugo did not answer because that was true. Todoroki looked at the first line.
"Containment can be rescue" Yaoyorozu nodded.
"That will matter for the exam" Aizawa said "Yes. The exam may push visible progress. You still choose correct response" Midoriya raised his hand.
"If evaluators score extraction higher but containment is safer, what do we do?" Aizawa said "You communicate. Clearly. Stabilized civilian. route unsafe. external support requested. further movement risks harm. Then you accept the score" The class did not like that. Good. Hero work involved doing the correct thing while people misunderstood it. That lesson did not need to wait for adulthood. Ren looked at the board. Containment can be rescue. No power if words work. Stop before maximum. Role does not erase care.
His body was tired. Not broken. Tired. Better and wrong at the same time. He looked at Shinso.
"You did not use Brainwashing" Shinso looked back.
"You stopped before maximum""Disgusting competence""Terrible phrase""Accurate" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Unfortunately" After the module, Ren returned to his room and slept for thirty-eight minutes. Not collapse. Sleep. That distinction became important enough that Recovery Girl forced him to say it when he woke.
"Not collapse""Again""Not collapse""Again, with less annoyance""Not collapse""Impossible boy""Impossible doctor" She did not hit him with the cane because he was still recovering and because the food tray arrived at the correct time. Hana and Daichi came by after the afternoon family check. Ren told them the pair module had ended at two seconds instead of three. Daichi said "Good two" Hana said "Good stop" Ren looked at both of them.
"You sound rehearsed" Hana smiled.
"We are learning" Daichi nodded.
"Normal requires training" Ren stared.
"That phrase escaped containment""Good phrases do" Recovery Girl muttered "Unfortunately" In the common room, Shinso experienced the consequences of being minimally accepted. Kaminari sat two seats away with a pudding cup. He did not offer one to Shinso. He placed an unopened one in the center of the table with three others. General. Then he said "There is pudding. General pudding. Logistics dessert if anyone asks" Jiro nodded in approval.
Mina gave two thumbs-up behind Kurose's back and then lowered them before the gesture became pressure. Shinso took one after Sero.
"No meaning" Kaminari said "General meaning?" Shinso stared. Kaminari winced.
"Too much?"
"Yes""Correction. No assigned meaning" Shinso considered.
"Better" He ate pudding. It was good. He said nothing about that because dessert could not be allowed influence this quickly. Bakugo sat across the room, pretending not to listen. Then he said "Words worked" The room quieted. Shinso looked at him.
"What?" Bakugo looked at his own bowl.
"In the drill. Dunce Face stopped when you said stop. You did not need your Quirk" Kaminari looked wounded and pleased.
"Dunce Face stopped heroically" Jiro said "Do not ruin it" Shinso looked at Bakugo.
"Yes" Bakugo's jaw worked.
"Good" Then he stood and left before anyone could make the moment survivable through speech. Kirishima watched him go.
"Good delivery?" Jiro said "Short enough to live" Sero nodded.
"Progress" Shinso stared at the pudding. No power if words work. He had wanted to use Brainwashing. He had not. The room had seen that and not called it weakness. That was new. Later that night, Aizawa filed the first Pair Module report. Ren Akiyama and Hitoshi Shinso demonstrated preliminary role compatibility under low-stress rescue simulation. Pair prioritized stabilization over extraction when route conditions were unsafe.
Shinso used verbal grounding without Quirk activation despite temptation to control panic marker. Ren maintained low-strain contact, identified gate activation, and stopped before maximum contact time when maximum became tempting. Class 1-A observed and maintained non-intervention with multiple temptation maps recorded. He paused before the final assessment. Then wrote: Readiness implication: positive, conditional. Pair shows strong rescue communication potential when role boundaries remain clear.
He considered adding more. Did not. No praise that became pressure. The report saved. In Ren's room, the temporary paper still said REN'S ROOM. On the desk board, below SIX TWENTY IS ALLOWED TO COUNT, Ren added: TWO SECONDS CAN BE A COMPLETE RESPONSE He stared at it. Two seconds. Three would have been allowed. He had stopped at two. Not because he failed. Because maximum had become tempting. That mattered. Across the wing, Shinso added a line to his small board. NO POWER IF WORDS WORK He stared at it too.
The sentence did not make Brainwashing smaller. It made choosing it cleaner when it was truly needed. Maybe that was what hero training was supposed to do. Not make a Quirk louder. Make the choice around it sharper. The dorms quieted slowly. Class 1-A failed normal in small ways and corrected in smaller ones. Ren slept with pain present and not too much. Shinso left his room once, returned, and did not mark it as failure. The Provisional Track did not look like a shortcut.
It looked like two students learning that help could be offered without taking over, power could wait when words worked, and a rescue could be complete even when no one moved the body from the room. Sometimes the first response was not extraction. Sometimes the first response was making sure no one became worse while the door was still unsafe. Sometimes that had to be enough. Enough could still save lives.
