Chương 106: The Room That Wanted Answers

Ren had learned to recognize rooms by what they asked from him. Observation room one had asked him to remain visible. The secured recovery suite had asked him to endure being protected. R-2 had asked him to remember he was a person inside a plan. The imaging room had asked him to lie still while adults tried to find a safer map of his body. This room did not ask. It took. White ceiling. Hard light. No windows. No wall panel. No shelf. No orange cat mural. No request button.
No bolted kettle pretending badly to be domestic. No Bentaro in Hana's scarf. No family photograph. No ugly proof that someone had argued with the room before he arrived. Only light. Metal. Cold. Machines. Ren lay on his side for three breaths before his body decided pain had waited long enough.
His right arm burned from shoulder to wrist, not broken in the clean way bone announced itself, but wrong in the connective places where the black fog had pulled and Scar Lattice had tried to anchor him against distance itself. The skin along his forearm throbbed with pale heat beneath the surface. Old scars across his shoulder and ribs felt awake, each one a small mouth trying to remember whether it should close or scream. He moved his left hand first. Fingers. Palm. Wrist. Working. He tried his right.
Pain answered. Not movement. He stopped. The old voice had told someone not to damage the connective tissue. That was not mercy. Mercy did not phrase him as tissue. Ren breathed through his nose. Antiseptic air. Not hospital. Laboratory. The distinction was not smell. It was intention. Hospitals wanted a body to return to someone. This room wanted a body to explain itself. A pair of polished shoes stood near his hand. Ren followed them upward. White coat. Round body. Short stature. Thick glasses.
A face almost kind if kindness had been removed and replaced with fascination wearing its skin. Old hands. Careful hands. Hands that had probably learned how to comfort before deciding knowledge was more interesting. Ren did not know his name. Some buried fragment stirred near the edge of recognition, a shape of a doctor, an old man, a child's diagnosis, a door closing quietly in a clinic room years before this life should have known it. Ren refused it. No chase. Not now.
The man crouched slowly, not close enough for Ren to reach even if his right arm had worked.
"Awake already" the doctor said "Good. Excellent autonomic recovery after spatial disruption" Ren stared at him. The doctor smiled.
"Do not worry. I will not ask you to stand yet" Ren swallowed. His throat hurt.
"That was not my concern" The smile widened by a fraction.
"Language intact. Humor under distress. Very good" Ren hated him immediately. Not loudly. That came later, maybe. For now, the hatred was clean enough to use.
"Where am I?"
"A room designed to answer questions" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Bad room" The doctor chuckled softly.
"Yes. I imagine you would think so" Behind him, a monitor chimed. A masked assistant moved near a console. Ren counted two visible people. Doctor. Assistant. Maybe more behind equipment. One door. No window. Vent high left. No loose obvious object. No weapon. No route. Floor polished but not reflective enough to give full information. Machines on both walls. One rolling tray, locked wheels. Bad. Counting hurt less than panic. So he counted. His right arm throbbed again. The doctor noticed his eyes shift.
"Your arm attempted a fascinating refusal. The lattice pattern was incomplete but directional. It tried to anchor through tissue tension rather than external grip. That should not work against warped space, and yet for approximately point-eight seconds, it did" Ren said nothing. The doctor's expression sharpened.
"You already knew not to feed me. Good. Someone trained you well" Ren thought of Kurose. You do not bleed yourself into public explanation. Not public. Worse. Private with teeth. The doctor stood.
"You may call me Doctor""No" The assistant looked up. The doctor seemed delighted.
"No?"
"You may be a doctor. I will not call you mine" For a moment, the room was silent except for machines. Then the doctor laughed. Not cruelly. That made it worse.
"Excellent distinction" Ren pushed himself onto his left elbow. The room tilted. Pain flashed across his right shoulder and down his side. Scars heated. He froze. The doctor lifted one hand.
"Careful. Your body is still deciding whether the event ended""Then stop talking to it""Ah" The doctor's eyes brightened.
"You think of it as listening" Ren closed his mouth. Too much. Already too much. He forced himself upright anyway, legs under him, left hand braced against the floor. No restraints. That was deliberate. If they had not restrained him, either they wanted to observe free response, or they had other controls. Likely both. He got to his knees. The assistant shifted. The doctor held up two fingers and the assistant stopped. Ren filed that away. The doctor said "Stand if you wish.
The room will not punish ambition" Ren looked at him.
"Rooms do not punish""Do they not?" The doctor glanced around.
"This one might disappoint you" Ren stood. Almost. His knees shook before fully locking. His right arm hung close to his side, fingers numb at the tips. He did not clutch it. He wanted to. He did not. The floor was cold through the thin scan-safe clothing. He was still dressed from the imaging suite. No shoes. No ID tag. No soft band around the wrist. The monitor line had torn away during transfer; a reddened mark circled his skin where it had been. He looked down. No bracelet. No clipped tag.
No visible proof of U. A. The doctor followed his gaze.
"We removed loose identifiers for contamination control" Ren almost laughed.
"You kidnapped me and worried about contamination?"
"Constantly" The answer was calm. Honest. Monstrous. Ren looked toward the door. The doctor did not stop him from looking. That meant the door did not matter. Bad. Ren's scars heated again. He said it quietly, to himself more than to them.
"Scar heat. No full lattice. Right arm impaired. No image" The doctor went still. Not frozen. Interested.
"Self-reporting. Even now" Ren realized the mistake after it left his mouth. Training surviving capture. Protocol becoming data. Kurose would hate that. Aizawa would tell him to stop giving the room his habits. Recovery Girl would smack the doctor with a cane if she were here. She was not. The doctor took one step closer.
"Who is the report for?" Ren looked at him.
"No one here" That one landed. Not hard enough. But it landed. The doctor smiled.
"Then keep it. I do not mind" Ren did not answer. The overhead speaker crackled once. A new voice entered. Smooth. Soft. Almost amused. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
"I mind a little" Ren's body reacted before thought. Not Scar Lattice. Older fear. A shape in memory without name. A pressure in the room, like all exits had become polite lies. The doctor turned toward the speaker.
"My apologies. He is more intact than expected" The voice answered "I heard" Ren stared at the speaker. The fragment stirred again, sharper this time. A ruined man. A smile without a face. A shadow behind too many events. A hand reaching through generations. A father-shaped absence attached to a green-haired boy in a way no one should know yet. No. No chase. Not now. Not his door. The voice continued "Akiyama Ren" Ren said nothing. Names were hooks. He had learned that from being counted.
The voice seemed pleased anyway.
"You held very well" Ren's stomach turned. The doctor looked at him with professional curiosity. Ren kept his eyes on the speaker.
"If this is praise, it is badly placed" A soft chuckle.
"Not praise. Recognition""I do not want yours""No. I imagine you have enough adults offering unwanted words" Ren's palms warmed. Slowly. The voice knew the shape of the wound, or guessed well enough to press. Ren opened his fingers. The doctor saw. The speaker voice said "Still open-handed. How disciplined" Ren closed his hands. Immediately regretted giving the reaction. The voice laughed again. Not loudly. That made it worse.
"Ah. There you are" Ren's jaw tightened. Do not feed. Do not chase. Do not prove. He looked at the doctor instead.
"What do you want?" The doctor answered, though Ren suspected the question had not been for him alone.
"Baseline" Ren's breath caught despite himself. The doctor's eyes glittered.
"Yes. I know. The irony is unfortunate" Ren took one step back. His heel touched nothing but floor. No wall close enough. The doctor spoke gently.
"You were brought here during a baseline scan. We will continue the work. Cruder circumstances, perhaps, but not without value" Ren's voice came out low.
"You will not get consent" The doctor's smile faded for the first time. Not in anger. In disappointment that reminded Ren of a teacher correcting a child's misunderstanding.
"No. Of course not" The speaker voice said "Consent is a lovely thing when time is abundant" Ren looked at the speaker.
"It is still mine when you steal it" Silence. Then the voice answered.
"Yes" One word. Soft. Too honest. Ren hated that most. The doctor gestured to the assistant. The assistant touched the console. A clear barrier descended between Ren and the visible door. Not bars. Not glass exactly. A transparent field thickening the air. Ren had not seen the mechanism. Bad. The doctor said "You are not restrained yet. I would prefer to observe voluntary movement before that becomes necessary" Ren's throat went dry. Yet. Necessary. He looked at the barrier, then the machines, then the floor.
No clean route. No object to use. No shoes. No ally. He thought of Shinso. The route flinched. You didn't. He thought of Hana. You come back. He thought of Daichi. The wrong thing was someone trying to steal the choice inside it. He thought of Kurose screaming his name. He thought of Aizawa's scarf cutting through empty air. He thought of Recovery Girl's fingers digging into his shoulder. The room wanted answers. Fine. It would not get them clean. Ren ran. Not toward the door.
Toward the rolling tray with locked wheels. The assistant startled. The doctor's eyes widened, pleased and alarmed at once. Ren slammed his left shoulder into the tray. Pain flared. The wheels did not move. Locked. Expected. The tray tipped anyway. Not far. Enough. Metal instruments, all larger than standard, secured by magnetic strips, rattled but did not fall. One broad diagnostic paddle dislodged halfway, caught by its tether. Ren grabbed the tether with his left hand and pulled. The assistant shouted.
The clear barrier flickered near the door as power redirected. Tiny shift. Not enough. Ren yanked again. The tether snapped back, bruising his palm. The doctor said sharply "Do not injure the left hand" Interesting. They wanted both hands. Ren pulled a third time and slammed the diagnostic paddle against the floor. The noise cracked through the room like a bell. Not useful tactically. Useful emotionally. The doctor sighed.
The speaker voice said "He learns rooms quickly" Ren swung the paddle toward the nearest monitor. The assistant moved. Too fast. A Quirk? Probably. The paddle hit empty air and the assistant's hand touched Ren's left wrist. Cold bloomed up his arm. Not freezing. Numbing. Ren tried to twist away. Right arm useless. Left wrist numb. Knees unstable. He kicked the assistant's shin. That worked. The assistant cursed and stumbled. Ren felt savage satisfaction for half a second.
Then something struck him between the shoulder blades. Not hard. A pulse. His muscles failed. He fell forward and hit the floor with his left forearm and cheek. Pain. White. Breath gone. His scars flared in scattered sparks under skin, trying to brace too late. The doctor's voice came from above.
"I did warn you" Ren tried to move. His body answered slowly, as if each signal had to travel through syrup. Not paralysis. Suppression. Temporary. He forced his fingers to curl. One. Two. Three. Working badly. The doctor crouched again.
"I respect the attempt. Truly. But I need you less damaged than your fear wants to make you" Ren spat blood onto the floor. Small amount. Lip cut. The doctor looked at it like a note.
"Oral injury minor" Ren laughed once. It sounded broken.
"You talk like a room" The doctor paused. Then smiled.
"Perhaps I do" The speaker voice said "Doctor. Proceed" The amusement was gone now. Not anger. Decision. The assistant recovered and dragged Ren up with help from another person who had entered through a side panel Ren had not seen. That meant second hidden door. Bad. Worse. Too late. They placed him on a reclined examination frame. Not a table. Not exactly. A chair designed to become a table if someone stopped pretending. Broad restraints emerged from the sides. Ren fought when the first crossed his chest.
He could not stop it. He fought when the second secured his left wrist. Could not. Right wrist. Pain exploded. He screamed through his teeth. The doctor snapped "Looser on the right. We need response, not tearing" The restraint adjusted. Still held. Legs next. Then shoulder supports. Not tight enough to cut circulation. Too tight to matter. Ren breathed too fast. The machines listened. He hated that they listened. The doctor adjusted a scanner arm above him.
"Now. Let us begin with what your own doctors wanted. Baseline under duress is not ideal, but given your Quirk, perhaps more honest" Ren turned his head enough to glare at him.
"Nothing about this is honest" The doctor considered.
"Accurate correction" The speaker voice returned, softer.
"Akiyama Ren" Ren did not answer.
"You are wondering whether your friends will come" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Of course they will try""Try. Yes" The voice let the word settle. Ren felt it search for fear and find it.
"They will tear their structure apart to recover you. Teachers. parents. children. Symbol. All those careful lines strained at once. You were protected by many people. That makes your absence heavy" Ren closed his eyes. Do not feed. The voice continued "Heavy things make systems move" Ren opened his eyes. There. That was the shape. Not just kidnapping. Motion. The room. The route. The structure. He said "You wanted the movement" The doctor's scanner arm paused. The speaker voice sounded pleased.
"We wanted many things" Ren swallowed.
"You used the scan because it was necessary""Because it was good" That answer chilled him. The voice continued "Bad choices teach people caution. Good choices teach repetition" Ren looked at the ceiling until it blurred. The scan started. Not like U. A.' s. This one was harsher, narrower, more invasive in feeling if not in touch. A field passed over his skin, made the scars along his right arm burn, moved into his chest, mapped something beneath ribs and shoulder and old fractures. Monitors chimed.
The doctor murmured to the assistant.
"Scar channels irregular but coherent""Right shoulder strain severe""Autonomic spike high""Pain response suppressed voluntarily to partial degree""Heat pattern follows old trauma lines before current injury""Fascinating" Ren bit the inside of his cheek to keep from reacting to that word. Fascinating. Specimen word. Knife word. The scan passed over his left forearm. His fingers twitched. The doctor saw.
"Left side less adapted. Dominant compensation?" Ren said nothing. The field passed lower. Old knee injuries. Calf strain. Spine tension. Places where training had bitten him. Places where childhood had made small repairs. Places where his body had learned to hold when it should have asked to be held. Data appeared on screens he refused to read. The doctor moved closer.
"Do you know why your Quirk hid?" Ren stared at the ceiling. The doctor answered himself.
"Because everyone asked what you could do, not what your body was surviving" Ren's throat closed. The words were too close to true. The room did not deserve true. He said "That does not belong to you" The doctor's eyes softened. Artificially.
"Nothing belongs to anyone for long" Ren turned his head, slowly, painfully.
"My pain does" The doctor blinked. The speaker voice was silent. Ren continued, voice rough.
"You can scan it. You can name it. You can write it down. It is still not yours" The doctor's face changed. Not anger. Something nearer hunger.
"Excellent" Ren closed his eyes. The scan intensified. His scars flared. For one second, the restraint on his right wrist creaked as Scar Lattice tried to form along the forearm, incomplete lines rising beneath skin like pale wire. The doctor's voice sharpened.
"There" Pain split the world. Ren did not scream. Not because he was strong. Because if he screamed, the room would answer too happily. At U. A., the alarms had stopped screaming only because people needed to hear orders. The imaging suite was wrecked. Not destroyed. Wrecked in the way a room became after too many heroes arrived one second too late. Aizawa stood in the center of it with one hand braced against the scanner bed, hair falling into his face, goggles cracked along one lens.
His scarf trailed across the floor where it had cut nothing but mist. Blood ran from his temple. He ignored it. Kurose knelt near the place Ren had vanished, one hand on the floor, the other clenched around nothing. Recovery Girl stood beside the empty scan bed with a face so white with rage that several staff members had stopped speaking to avoid dying. Dr. Seno was still behind the control booth glass, shaking, alive, one hand pressed against her mouth. Hakamata's security team moved through the corridor.
Nezu stood at the doorway, small, still, terrible. All Might arrived in hero form and for one instant the room seemed to bend around the force of him.
"Where?" No one answered fast enough. Aizawa turned. His voice was raw.
"Warp extraction. Hidden seam. External interference. They used the scanner to break line of sight" All Might's fists closed. The air around him changed. Recovery Girl snapped "Do not you dare break this room further unless it tells us where he is" All Might froze. Barely. Enough. Kurose stood. Her face looked calm. That was worse than crying.
"They knew the route. They knew the scan. They knew the abort rule and waited until the real plan" Nezu's eyes were black and bright.
"Yes" Aizawa looked at the floor.
"He said barley" Dr. Seno flinched. Recovery Girl's hand tightened on her cane. Kurose closed her eyes. The stop word. A joke. A rule. A boy trying to make a machine less powerful by humiliating tea. Aizawa's voice dropped.
"He did everything right" No one contradicted him. That made the sentence worse. Kurose opened her eyes.
"His parents" The room went still. All Might looked toward the door.
"I will tell them" Recovery Girl's voice was sharp enough to cut.
"No" All Might stopped. Recovery Girl stepped forward.
"You will be there. Kurose speaks. Aizawa stands. Nezu explains what we know. Do not turn yourself into grief first. They need their son found, not a symbol apologizing" All Might's face twisted. Then he nodded.
"Yes" Kurose looked at the floor where Ren had vanished. For one second, her control almost broke. Almost. Then she breathed in.
"Lock every movement protocol. Pull every log. Every staff access. Every administrative layer. Every vent map. Every basement seam. Every false maintenance flag from the last month. I want the building to tell us what it said in its sleep" Hakamata nodded.
"Already underway" Aizawa straightened.
"I am going" Nezu looked at him.
"You are injured""I am going""You are compromised by proximity" Aizawa's eyes were bloodshot.
"I am going" All Might stepped closer.
"So am I" Nezu did not raise his voice.
"No one goes anywhere without a destination" That stopped them because it was true and because they hated it. Nezu's ears lowered slightly.
"We have one acquired student, one missing pro hero, one exposed warp method, one compromised support layer, and an enemy who just proved they can use our correct answers against us. Rage will move faster than strategy. That is why it must not lead" Aizawa looked like the sentence physically hurt. Kurose said "Then give rage a job" Nezu looked at her. Kurose's voice remained steady.
"Do not ask anyone in this room to become calm. Give rage a job" For the first time since the extraction, Recovery Girl's expression shifted. Nezu nodded.
"Very well" The room began to move. Not wildly. Not safely. But with purpose. At 10: 31, Hana and Daichi Akiyama were brought into a secured briefing room. Hana knew before anyone spoke. The body sometimes recognized disaster before language ruined it. Daichi held Bentaro because no one had dared take it from him this time. The orange tag trembled against the handle where his grip tightened. Kurose entered first. Aizawa behind her. Recovery Girl. Nezu. All Might last. Hana stood.
"No" One word. A mother refusing the room before it spoke. Kurose stopped in front of her.
"Hana""No" Kurose's face did not break.
"Ren was taken during the scan" Hana's hand flew to her mouth but no sound came out. Daichi did not move. For three seconds, he became completely still. Then he said "Alive?" Kurose answered immediately.
"We believe so. He was conscious at extraction. He spoke. There was no fatal injury observed" Hana made a sound then. Not a scream. Something worse. Daichi stepped toward her and she gripped his arm hard enough that even his stabilizing body shifted. All Might bowed his head.
"I—" Recovery Girl's cane struck the floor. All Might stopped. Hana looked at him. Her eyes were terrible.
"Do not start with sorry" All Might's face crumpled behind the Symbol and held. Hana turned back to Kurose.
"What happened?" Kurose told them. Not all at once. Not cleanly. No lies. Necessary scan. Frozen route. Correct procedure. Imaging suite. External interference. Hidden warp breach. Ren's stop word. Scar flare. Extraction. No known destination yet. Hana listened with both hands open and shaking. Daichi listened with one hand around Bentaro and one on Hana's back. When Kurose finished, Daichi asked "Did he do something wrong?" Aizawa answered.
"No" The word was immediate. Violent.
"He did everything right" Daichi closed his eyes. Hana whispered "That does not bring him back""No" Aizawa said He did not soften it. Maybe because soft would have been obscene. Hana looked at Recovery Girl.
"Was he hurt?" Recovery Girl's voice was rough.
"Right arm and shoulder strain during extraction. Scar heat. Incomplete lattice. Conscious. Fighting. Angry" Hana's face twisted around the last word.
"Good" Daichi's voice shook.
"Trustworthy" Kurose closed her eyes for half a second. Then opened them.
"Yes" Nezu spoke.
"We are initiating search operations. Police and pro heroes are being coordinated. We are treating Ren's case as linked to Ragdoll's capture" Hana's eyes sharpened through tears.
"Do not say case like he is paperwork" Nezu bowed his head.
"You are right. Ren's abduction" She nodded once. Barely.
"Better" All Might finally spoke, carefully, not as apology, not first.
"We will bring him home" Daichi looked at him.
"Do not promise what you do not control" All Might flinched. Daichi continued, voice low and shaking.
"Promise what you will do" All Might lifted his head.
"I will search. I will fight if I find him. I will not stop because it hurts" Hana's face tightened.
"That one I accept" Aizawa said "I will find the route" Kurose said "I will not let him become a file while we do" Recovery Girl said "I will keep the room ready for him" Nezu said "I will make the structure move without letting it tear itself apart" Daichi looked down at Bentaro. Then back up.
"We stay" Kurose nodded.
"Yes" Hana said "And when people say he was taken from protection?" The room went quiet. She stepped forward. Her voice did not rise.
"They will say the protection failed. They will say the scan was a mistake. They will say he should never have moved. They will say wanting the better map opened the door. You will not let them put that on him" Kurose's eyes hardened.
"No" Aizawa said "Never" Recovery Girl said "They can try it with me first" Hana looked at them all.
"He wanted to understand his body. That was not the wrong door" No one spoke. The sentence entered the room and became law. In the laboratory, Ren learned that time behaved differently when someone else owned the lights. The scan ended. Or paused. Or became something else. He did not know. His right arm shook against the restraint. His left hand had regained feeling in painful pins and needles. His chest hurt where the broad strap held him down.
His scars burned and cooled in waves, never enough to become full lattice, never calm enough to forget. The doctor stood by the monitors, speaking softly to an assistant.
"Response under restraint lower than response during extraction. Trigger quality matters. Threat to social anchors produced stronger flare than direct confinement. Interesting" Ren stared at the ceiling. The words passed over him like insects. Social anchors. Stronger flare. Interesting. The speaker voice had gone silent for a while. That was almost worse. The doctor approached.
"You are doing well" Ren turned his head.
"No" The doctor smiled faintly.
"Your body is doing well""That is not the same thing""True" He appreciated corrections like gifts. Ren hated giving him anything. The doctor touched a control. The restraint around Ren's chest loosened slightly. Not freedom. A gesture designed to be noticed. Ren noticed and refused gratitude. The doctor said "I will not pretend this is pleasant""Generous""But you should understand something. Crude harm is not my goal" Ren laughed once, dry and ugly. The doctor's brows lifted. Ren looked at him.
"You kidnapped me during a medical scan""Yes""Then restrained me""Yes""Then scanned me without consent""Yes""Crude is not your problem?" The doctor considered.
"No. Imprecision is" Ren stared at him. The doctor looked genuinely thoughtful.
"You are angry because you measure the act morally. I measure the act by informational waste""That is not a defense""No. It is an explanation" The old voice returned through the speaker.
"Doctor, you are boring our guest" Ren's body tightened. The doctor stepped back. The voice addressed Ren directly.
"You are very good at refusing categories" Ren said nothing.
"Student. patient. target. specimen. hero. useless. You dislike all of them when they arrive too early" Ren's throat went cold. Too close. Too much. The voice continued "Wise. Names are rooms. One should inspect them before entering" Ren closed his eyes. Not because he was tired. Because he wanted to remove the speaker from the world and could not. The voice softened.
"What name would you choose, I wonder?" Ren opened his eyes. The ceiling was still white. The restraints still held. The room still wanted answers. He thought of Hana's hand on his hair. Daichi saying they loved the boy and hated the knife. Shinso saying the route flinched. Midoriya saying we can be bad at it at the same time. Bakugo telling him not to let the machine win. Kurose screaming his name. Aizawa saying he did everything right. Recovery Girl saying the room would stay ready.
He did not know she had said it. He felt it anyway. Ren breathed. Then answered the speaker.
"Here" Silence. The doctor looked at the monitor, as if the word might have changed something measurable. Maybe it had. The voice was quiet when it returned.
"That is not a name" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"It is enough" For now. For this room. For the machines. For the people who would come. For the structure that had moved and failed and would move again. Here. Still. Not theirs. Not gone. The doctor touched another control. The lights shifted. The next phase began.
