Chương 145: Being Known Is a Hazard

The provisional license exam had a shape. That was the next problem. Dates could pretend to be harmless. Scores could pretend to be objective. Summaries could pretend to be enough. Shapes did none of those things. A shape told the body where impact might come from. It gave fear something to rehearse against. It gave students permission to imagine the exact moment they failed. Aizawa revealed the first stage after breakfast. Not in the classroom. Not in the common room.
In Gym Gamma, where the floor had already been divided into zones with tape and the walls were covered with soft target discs. Kaminari saw the targets and stopped walking.
"Oh no" Jiro looked at him.
"What?" He pointed at the wall.
"Circles" Sero leaned around him.
"You are afraid of circles?"
"I am afraid of organized circles" Bakugo walked past both of them.
"You are afraid of everything with instructions" Kaminari nodded.
"Yes. That is what makes me adaptable" Todoroki looked at the target discs with a thoughtful expression.
"Are we throwing things at each other?" Aizawa said "Eventually" Mina brightened. Then Kurose lifted one finger.
"No celebrating impact before briefing" Mina dimmed by twenty percent.
"Yes, ma'am" Ren sat near the Provisional Track entry point in his chair, support brace active, wrist patch quiet, no public lights. Shinso stood beside him with his prototype collar resting at his throat. The collar was inactive and visibly marked neutral with one small gray strip that Hatsume had called "subtle interface joy" before Power Loader took away her adjective privileges for the morning. Class 1-A gathered in front of the board. Class 1-B stood across the gym under Vlad King's supervision.
Monoma looked delighted enough that Kendo had already positioned herself within striking distance. Aizawa wrote on the board. FIRST STAGE PREPTARGET ELIMINATIONBEING KNOWN IS A HAZARD The room shifted. Midoriya's notebook opened halfway. He stopped himself. Closed it. Aizawa saw.
"Good" Bakugo groaned.
"He got praised for not writing again" Midoriya did not answer. That was probably also training. Aizawa tapped the board.
"The first stage of the provisional license exam is expected to test large-field elimination under pressure. Candidates wear targets. Candidates eliminate others by striking those targets with provided balls or approved equivalents. Details may vary, but the principle is simple. Protect your targets. Hit theirs. Avoid becoming easy prey" Kaminari lifted a hand.
"Easy prey sounds judgmental""It is""Fair" Yaoyorozu raised her hand.
"Will other schools have prior information on us?" Aizawa looked at her.
"Yes" The answer landed harder than it should have. Kurose stepped forward.
"U. A. students are unusually visible. Sports Festival coverage made your Quirks, habits, strengths, and weaknesses public. Kamino increased attention further. Other candidates may come prepared specifically for you" Bakugo's eyes narrowed.
"Good" Kirishima looked at him.
"Is it?"
"If they come prepared, we crush prepared idiots" Aizawa said "That sentence is exactly why this module exists" Bakugo scowled. Kurose looked toward Ren and Shinso.
"Visibility is uneven. Some of you are known through public performance. Some through rumor. Some through official registration summaries. Some through speculation. Being unknown is not the same as being safe. Being known is not the same as being understood" Ren looked at the target discs. Being known is a hazard. His wrist patch pulsed once. Not gate. Stress. He touched the patch and breathed. Map. Gym Gamma. chair. target discs. Class 1-A. Class 1-B. Aizawa. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Shinso. left wrist. shoulder.
ribs. pressure. no gate. Recovery Girl, at the medical station, watched him and did not interrupt. Good. Aizawa wrote beneath the first lines. KNOWN DOES NOT MEAN CONSENTKNOWN DOES NOT MEAN ACCURATEKNOWN DOES NOT MEAN ROLE Shinso read the third line and exhaled through his nose.
"Everything becomes role" Aizawa said "Yes" Monoma lifted a hand.
"As a representative of those who weaponize public knowledge elegantly, may I say that this is an important lesson" Kendo said "You may say less" Monoma placed a hand to his chest.
"I am being oppressed by brevity" Vlad King said "You are being improved by it" Class 1-B laughed. Monoma looked wounded. Aizawa pointed to the target vests stacked on the bench.
"Today we run three phases. Phase one. Known-target analysis. Phase two. Low-contact target defense. Phase three. Provisional Track adaptation" Kaminari looked at the vests.
"Why do target vests look accusatory?" Jiro said "Because you are imagining being hit""I am very vivid" Bakugo grabbed a vest first.
"Stop whining and put it on""See? Accusatory" The first phase did not involve movement. This disappointed Bakugo immediately. Aizawa had Class 1-A stand in a line while Class 1-B listed what they would target first if they were facing them in the exam. It was cruel. Educationally. Kendo went first with Midoriya.
"Strong close-range output. likely self-sacrifice under pressure. May overcommit to rescue-looking bait even in elimination stage" Midoriya flinched. Aizawa looked at him.
"Map" Midoriya breathed.
"Gym Gamma. standing. notebook closed. hands tense. right arm fine. breathing elevated. temptation to explain. map present" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Monoma added "Also famous successor energy" Bakugo's head snapped toward him. Kurose said "No" Monoma lifted both hands.
"Too far. Correction. Public narrative pressure around him may be exploitable" Toshinori's remote audio remained silent. That silence was its own weight. Midoriya swallowed.
"Accurate" Aizawa looked at him.
"Public summary?" Midoriya inhaled.
"My training is my responsibility. The exam is not about anyone else's legacy" Kurose nodded.
"Keep" Bakugo was next. Tetsutetsu grinned.
"Explosive offense. aggressive movement. probably draws attacks because people want to take down the loud guy" Bakugo's eye twitched. Monoma said "Also psychologically easy to provoke" Bakugo took one step. Aizawa's scarf lifted. Bakugo stopped.
"Prove it, copy bastard" Kendo chopped Monoma before he could answer. Vlad King sighed.
"Both of you are proving the point in different fonts" Kirishima whispered "Different fonts is good" Aizawa looked at Bakugo.
"Map" Bakugo glared.
"No" Aizawa waited. Bakugo's jaw clenched.
"Palms hot. shoulders loaded. wanted to blast his face. did not. map present""Temptation?"
"Blast his face""Good" Monoma, still recovering from Kendo's correction, gave a weak thumbs-up.
"A terrifyingly legible temptation" Bakugo growled. Aizawa looked at him.
"Public summary" Bakugo snarled "My temper is not your strategy" Kurose wrote it. Bakugo stared.
"No""Keep" Aizawa said Bakugo looked betrayed. Todoroki's analysis came from Shiozaki.
"Powerful environment control. opponents may bait large-scale use to create openings or force collateral concerns" Todoroki nodded.
"Yes" Tokage added "Also if someone says your father, half the field will hear the temperature change" The room froze. Todoroki's face went still. Kendo said "Setsuna" Tokage grimaced.
"Correction. Public family narratives may be used to provoke emotional reaction" Todoroki took a breath.
"My family is not an exam route" Kurose wrote it. Ren looked away. Not his door. Still a good sentence. One by one, the class heard their public shapes. Uraraka. mobility support. close contact required. financial drive might be twisted into pressure if someone knew. Iida. predictable leadership. long commands. rigid rescue ethics exploitable through false authority. Yaoyorozu. creation versatility. decision time under crowd pressure. resource expenditure. Kirishima. protective impulse.
physically blocking hazards that may be bait. Jiro. sound sensitivity. information gathering. opponents may create noise. Kaminari. area output. fear of losing control. joke reflex under stress. Mina. mobility. enthusiasm. emotional responsiveness to panic markers. Asui. calm support. tendency to protect team stability at personal cost. Sero. mobility and restraint. habit of making awkwardness lighter before it is safe. Every sentence was useful. Every sentence was unpleasant. Aizawa let it be both.
Then he turned to Shinso. The room changed again. Class 1-B did not know him the way Class 1-A did. That was the point. Aizawa looked at Kendo.
"Known-target analysis. Public information only" Kendo faced Shinso.
"Brainwashing user. Most opponents will avoid answering direct questions. They may attack your throat or try to drown out your voice. They may treat you as either instant-win threat or avoidable support. Rumors may frame your Quirk as villainous or unfair" Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. Shinso's face did not move. Tetsutetsu added, carefully "They might try to make you waste time proving you are not scary" Shinso looked at him.
Tetsutetsu looked uncomfortable but held the sentence. Shinso nodded once.
"Accurate" Monoma tilted his head.
"They may also assume you are useless if they do not answer" The room sharpened. Shinso's mouth moved faintly.
"Also accurate" Aizawa said "Public summary" Shinso's voice came steady through the passive collar.
"My Quirk is one tool. If you do not answer, I still have voice, scarf, route work, and teammates. No power means words are safer. Silence does not make me absent" Kurose wrote the final sentence. SILENCE DOES NOT MAKE ME ABSENT Kaminari whispered "That is good" Shinso said "Stop collecting my sentences" Kaminari whispered "Sorry" Ren's turn came last. Class 1-B looked toward his chair. Not unkindly. Carefully. That was almost worse. Kendo spoke first again.
"Publicly, most candidates may know little. Some may hear rumors about injury, abduction, or conditional registration. They may assume limited mobility means easy target. They may assume stopping means weakness. They may pressure you to continue because they think removing you is easy if you are forced into motion" Ren listened. Pain present. Gate quiet. Good. Tetsutetsu looked at him.
"They might also not know what to do with you and hesitate" Monoma's voice was softer than usual.
"Some will use that hesitation. Others will use pity. Both are openings" Kurose wrote pity is an opening and looked irritated that Monoma had been useful again. Ren looked at the target vests. His public shape. Chair. brace. rumors. stop. conditional. Easy target. Special treatment. Limited. Useful for few seconds. He breathed.
"My role is not continuous defense. It is route timing, short stabilization, and making opponents misread when I am finished" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Kurose wrote. MAKING OPPONENTS MISREAD WHEN I AM FINISHED Bakugo looked at him.
"That is almost combat talk" Ren glanced at him.
"Provisional exam" Bakugo's mouth twitched.
"Tch" Aizawa said "Public summary" Ren's left hand rested on the chair control.
"My mobility and contact limits are operational boundaries, not invitations. If I stop, the route continues through teammates or position change. Do not assume stationary means finished" Silence. Then Yaoyorozu said softly "That is strong" Ren looked at her.
"Thank you" Recovery Girl said from the medical station "Do not become encouraged into stupidity" Ren said "Too late for encouraged. not too late for stupidity prevention""Acceptable" Phase two began with target vests. Class 1-A against selected Class 1-B. No Quirk overuse. Soft training balls. Targets attached to chest, shoulders, and back. Objective: survive two minutes while being attacked by opponents who had just named your tendencies. It was awful. Educationally.
Midoriya lasted forty seconds before Kendo baited him with a fake stumble near a boundary line. He shifted to help, saw the line at the last second, stopped, and got tagged in the shoulder by Tokage's split-off hand. Aizawa called pause. Midoriya reported "Temptation to rescue-looking bait. stopped body but forgot targets. map present" Aizawa nodded.
"Good failure" Midoriya looked pained. Bakugo lasted longer and lost one target only because Monoma provoked him by saying "temper is not your strategy" in a perfect imitation of Kurose's teaching voice. Bakugo did not blast him. He did turn too sharply, exposing the back target to Awase. Aizawa called "Pause" Bakugo snarled "I did not blast him" Aizawa said "Correct. You improved one failure and revealed another" Bakugo looked like he hated accurate compliments.
Todoroki avoided Tokage's bait but overcontrolled the field, making his own movement path predictable. Uraraka protected her back well but kept glancing at teammates. Iida's commands improved after he shortened them but his movement still declared route changes too early. Yaoyorozu adapted fastest once she stopped trying to solve the entire field. No one enjoyed being known. Good. Then Shinso entered phase two. His opponent was Kendo. Not because Kendo would be easy. Because she would be fair.
Shinso wore the target vest over his training uniform, capture scarf loose, collar in neutral. Kendo stood across from him with three training balls and a look of complete focus. Aizawa said "Begin" Kendo did not answer any question. Shinso did not ask one. He moved left, scarf snapping low, not toward her face but toward the line of her next throw. She adapted quickly, throwing two balls in succession. He blocked one with the scarf and took the second on his lower side target. Hit. He did not flinch much.
He shifted back, used the collar to project one word sideways instead of forward.
"Behind" Kendo's eyes flicked. Not answer. Reaction. He used the moment to move, not to activate anything. Kendo smiled faintly.
"Good" He almost answered. Did not. She threw again. He ducked, scarf caught the ball, and he stepped into her blind angle. No Brainwashing. No direct prompt. No power. Still present. Timer ended. He had lost one target. Kendo had lost one too, hit by the redirected ball he had wrapped and flicked back low. Aizawa nodded.
"Report" Shinso breathed.
"Opponent did not answer. Quirk unavailable by choice and context. used voice direction as distraction, not prompt. scarf response adequate. lost side target. throat fine. no Quirk activation. map present" Kendo nodded.
"You are not useless when unanswered" Shinso looked at her.
"Operationally useful sentence" Kendo smiled.
"Accepted" Monoma looked toward Bakugo.
"Should I try him next?" Aizawa said "No" Monoma sighed.
"Oppressed again" Then Ren entered phase two. The gym changed because his chair entered the marked target field. That was the cruel part. The exam would not be built around his comfort. The training did not get to be either. But cruel did not mean careless. The field was smaller. The time was one minute. The targets were modified: one on the chair back, one on the left shoulder, one on the right side of the vest. The chair was allowed as mobility support. No one could target wheels directly. No body contact.
Soft balls only. Ren could use chair movement, low bracing, route misdirection, and short Graft Lattice stabilization if needed. No standing. No lifting. No live command. Stop at any time. His opponent was Tokage. Because Tokage could attack from angles without becoming cruel and because she had already proven she could be annoying without crossing the wrong line when properly threatened by Kendo. Tokage bounced one ball in her hand.
"You okay with weird angles?" Ren said "Yes. no wheel targeting. no medical questions""Accepted. I will be extremely annoying but not invasive""Accepted" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Map""Gym Gamma. target field. chair. Tokage. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. gate quiet. map present""Begin" Tokage split immediately. A hand with a ball went high left. Another angle went low right. Ren did not move forward. He reversed. Everyone expected a candidate in a chair to guard the front. Tokage's high throw missed because his chair rolled backward and pivoted half a meter. The low throw came toward the side target.
Ren turned the chair just enough that the ball struck the chair frame outside target. Tokage laughed.
"Oh, that is mean" Ren said nothing. Good. She sent a floating hand behind him. The back target. Ren's patch pulsed. Not gate. Spatial stress. He breathed. Chair left. wall right. back hand. front body. Tokage main. one ball. side target. no gate. He stopped the chair. Stationary. Tokage took the bait. Her hand released the ball toward the back target. Ren shifted the chair angle at the last moment, not fast, but enough. The ball hit the side of the chair and dropped. The room made a small sound.
Bakugo muttered "Not finished" Ren heard. Good. Tokage's main body grinned and threw straight at his shoulder target. Too close. Ren could not dodge cleanly. He lifted his left forearm to brace against the chair arm, Graft Lattice flickering through wrist and shoulder for half a second as he turned the shoulder out of line. The ball grazed the edge of the target but did not detach the marker. Pain rose. Gate. Patch pulse.
"Stop" Aizawa called "Pause" Everything stopped. Ren exhaled.
"Map. Gym Gamma. chair. left wrist gate local. shoulder braced. ribs quiet. pain present. target grazed. stopped after brace. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Acceptable" Tokage lowered her hands.
"Was the brace okay?" Ren looked at her.
"Yes. stop because gate""Accepted" Aizawa checked the target.
"Grazed. no point" Tokage pointed.
"He made stationary look done" Aizawa nodded.
"Correct" Kurose wrote: STATIONARY IS NOT FINISHED Bakugo stared at the line.
"I said that better" Kurose looked at him.
"You said not finished""Better" She added beneath it: NOT FINISHED Bakugo looked satisfied and annoyed that satisfaction had been created. The timer had paused at thirty-two seconds. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Continue?" Recovery Girl said "Medical possible. not necessary" Ren breathed. Continue wanted proof. Stopping at thirty-two would be complete. But phase objective was one minute target defense. He had stopped because gate, not collapse. The gate had narrowed. Map present. Pain present. He looked at Recovery Girl.
"Condition. continue with no Graft Lattice bracing. chair movement only. maximum twenty seconds. if side pressure, stop" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed. Then she nodded.
"Accepted" Aizawa looked at Tokage.
"Accepted?" Tokage nodded.
"No weird body pressure angles. chair targets only""Begin" Ren lasted sixteen more seconds. Tokage tagged the back target with a delayed split-hand throw after forcing him to guard the side. Aizawa called end. One target lost. Not eliminated. Ren breathed hard. Not collapse. Not hero. Candidate. Maybe. Report.
"Map. Gym Gamma. chair. back target lost. left wrist pain. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. frustration. no gate spread. stopped within condition" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"Back target obvious" Ren looked at him.
"Yes""Fix it""Working on it""Good" Kirishima whispered "That was almost normal training talk" Jiro whispered "Do not disturb it" Phase three paired Ren and Shinso. Against Monoma and Kendo. Because apparently U. A. believed in difficult fairness and Class 1-B believed in sending their most controlled chaos against other people's boundaries. The setup was simple. Two minutes. Target vests. Ren and Shinso as a pair. Ren in chair. Shinso on foot. They did not need to eliminate both opponents.
Objective was survive, protect pair roles, and make operational choices legible. Brainwashing allowed under exam-style consent rules because opponents were participating candidates, but Shinso's personal condition remained: no Quirk if words, movement, or scarf worked first. Aizawa looked at both.
"Pair condition" Ren said "No one becomes shield" Shinso said "No one becomes bait without saying it" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Kendo faced them.
"Ready" Monoma smiled.
"I promise to be educationally obnoxious" Kendo said "Limited""Artistically limited""Monoma""Ready" The buzzer sounded. Monoma moved first, not attacking, talking.
"Responder, will you ask me a question? I do adore giving answers under pressure" Shinso ignored him. Good. Kendo threw at Ren's side target while Monoma angled toward Shinso's back. Ren reversed left. Shinso stepped right. They crossed routes without colliding. Good. Shinso's scarf snapped toward Monoma's throwing hand. Monoma ducked, grinning.
"No words? How disappointing" Shinso said "You talk enough for both of us" Monoma's mouth opened. He stopped. Kendo shouted "Do not answer" Monoma clicked his tongue.
"Tragic" Ren used that moment. Chair pivot. Soft ball from chair-side pouch. Not strong. Good angle. It clipped Monoma's lower side target. The room made a sound. Monoma stared.
"Did the chair shoot me?" Ren said "Candidate shot you" Bakugo barked a laugh. Aizawa said "Observer silence" Kendo adjusted immediately. She went after Ren's back target, not because she wanted to eliminate him, but because she was good. Ren turned stationary again, making the back look open, then shifted at the last second. Kendo anticipated the shift and threw low. Hit. Back target gone. Ren's jaw tightened. Shinso saw.
"Map" Ren answered without looking.
"Back target lost. not finished" Good. Pair language. Kendo's eyes sharpened. Monoma moved toward Ren with another throw, trying to force Shinso to either protect or attack. Shinso said "Role" Ren answered "Route left. no shield" Shinso moved left, not between Ren and Monoma, but into Monoma's throw path at an angle that made Monoma choose. Throw at Shinso. Or throw at Ren and expose his own side. Monoma threw at Shinso. Shinso caught the ball in the scarf, wrapped it, redirected low. Missed. Kendo pressed.
Two balls left. Ren's wrist patch pulsed as he pivoted too sharply. Gate. He whispered "Stop" Pain stayed. He did not call full stop because the gate narrowed and map remained. Recovery Girl watched. Aizawa watched Recovery Girl watching. Kendo heard the whisper. She did not exploit it. Good opponent. Fair opponent. Monoma did exploit the pause. Not cruelly. Exam-style. He threw at Ren's shoulder target. Ren could not pivot in time. Shinso's scarf snapped across the ball path and deflected it just enough to miss.
The scarf pulled his shoulder. Shinso grimaced.
"Map. shoulder strain. acceptable" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Pair continued. Kendo rushed Shinso. He backed, collar pulse warning throat strain as he almost spoke too hard. Private-first. He lowered volume.
"Kendo. behind" She did not answer. She did glance. He used the glance. Not Quirk. Movement. He tagged her side target with a soft ball from low angle. Hit. Kendo smiled.
"Good" He did not answer. Learned. Monoma looked delighted and irritated.
"One target each then" Ren's side target remained. Shinso had two targets remaining. Kendo had two. Monoma had two after Ren's hit. Timer thirty seconds. Ren said "Containment?" Shinso answered "Survive score" Kendo heard. She nodded once. Then attacked. The last thirty seconds became ugly in the useful way. Ren made the chair look finished twice. Kendo stopped falling for it. Monoma tried talking at Shinso from too many angles. Shinso ignored anything shaped like bait and answered only role terms.
"Left""Hold""No shield""Route" Ren returned.
"Chair turn""Back gone""Side protected""Stop if gate" At twelve seconds, Kendo forced Ren toward the wall tape. The chair could turn sharply and protect the side target. It would strain the wrist. Or he could accept the hit. He accepted the hit. The ball struck his side target. Second target lost. Not eliminated yet. But close. Bakugo's hands clenched behind observation line. Midoriya's notebook remained closed by miracle. Shinso moved, not to avenge, not to shield.
He used the moment Kendo's attention stayed on Ren and tagged her shoulder target. Hit. Timer ended. No eliminations. Target losses: Ren two lost. Shinso none lost. Kendo two lost. Monoma one lost. Pair objective: survived. roles maintained. no Brainwashing. no body-map loss. Aizawa called "End" Ren exhaled like the air had been borrowed. Recovery Girl said "Map""Gym Gamma. chair. two targets lost. left wrist pain. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. accepted side hit instead of sharp turn. gate local.
map present""Pain absence?"
"No""Acceptable" Shinso reported.
"Gym Gamma. throat mild strain. shoulder strain from scarf deflection. no Quirk activation. ignored bait. tagged two targets. map present" Kurose looked at him.
"No Quirk activation under exam pressure" He looked away.
"Yes" Kendo walked over.
"That was hard to fight" Ren looked up.
"Because chair?"
"No. Because I could not tell when you were finished and when you were choosing not to move" Ren breathed. Good. Tokage, from the side, said "That is creepy in a good way" Recovery Girl said "No creepy phrasing near patient" Tokage saluted.
"Operationally disorienting""Better" Monoma approached with one hand over his tagged side.
"I have been struck by chair strategy. My worldview will recover poorly" Ren said "Candidate shot you" Monoma pointed at him.
"See? That is even worse" Shinso looked at Monoma.
"You almost answered me" Monoma froze. Then looked away.
"I did not""You almost did" Kendo smiled.
"He did" Monoma looked mortally offended.
"Terrible day" Aizawa wrote the final board. BEING KNOWN IS A HAZARDKNOWN DOES NOT MEAN ROLESILENCE DOES NOT MEAN ABSENTSTATIONARY IS NOT FINISHEDNO ONE BECOMES SHIELDNO ONE BECOMES BAIT WITHOUT SAYING IT Then he added one more line. VISIBILITY CAN BE USED BACK Class 1-A stared at it. Yaoyorozu spoke first.
"If others know us, they may attack habits. But we can also make them misread corrected habits" Aizawa nodded.
"Exactly" Todoroki looked at his hands.
"If they expect large ice, I can make small ice" Bakugo said "If they expect me to explode, I can still explode better" Aizawa stared. Bakugo grinned sharply.
"Or not" Kirishima whispered "Growth with teeth" Midoriya looked at the board.
"If they expect self-sacrifice, I can confirm route first" Uraraka added "If they expect rescue bait to pull us apart, we name roles" Shinso looked at the line silence does not mean absent.
"If they expect answers, I use silence" Ren looked at stationary is not finished.
"If they expect stopped to mean done, I make done unclear" Recovery Girl said "Within medical limits" Ren nodded.
"Within medical limits" Kaminari raised a hand.
"If they expect me to panic?" Jiro said "You map before sparks" He nodded.
"Map before sparks. good" Aizawa capped the marker.
"Training ends" Kaminari blinked.
"No final ominous sentence?" Aizawa looked at him.
"Eat" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good sentence" The class accepted this as law. Later, Ren returned to his room and slept for forty-one minutes. Not collapse. Sleep. When he woke, his desk board waited. He added: STATIONARY IS NOT FINISHED Then, after a pause: VISIBILITY CAN BE USED BACK Hana read the second line.
"That sounds dangerous""It is""Good dangerous?"
"Maybe" Daichi said "Carefully dangerous" Ren nodded.
"Carefully" Across the wing, Shinso added: SILENCE DOES NOT MEAN ABSENT Then: NO ONE BECOMES BAIT WITHOUT SAYING IT He looked at the last one longer. There had been years where silence made him invisible in the wrong way. There had been years where speech made him dangerous in other people's eyes. Now silence could be a choice. Speech could be a tool. Power could wait. That did not fix anything. It made the field larger.
In the common room that night, Kaminari tried to explain to Mina that the bucket had become a symbol of chaotic civilian truth. Mina agreed too strongly. Kurose confiscated the bucket from future philosophical use. Bakugo replayed the pair drill in his head and admitted to no one that Ren letting the side target get hit instead of wrenching the chair had been the correct choice. Midoriya wrote route before rescue bait on the top of a page and stopped before it became a manifesto.
Todoroki made one small ice cube in his tea and looked satisfied with proportion. Iida shortened the next morning's schedule by four words and considered it a moral victory. U. A. slept under the weight of being known. Not safe. Not hidden. Not understood. Known. That could be a hazard. It could also be a tool if they stopped reacting like their public shapes were cages. A target was not a role. Visibility was not consent. Stationary was not finished.
And if the world had learned their old habits, then the next step was not to become unknown. It was to become harder to read wrong.
