Chương 112: Stabilization Is Not Healing
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~53 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
Stabilization was a word adults used when they wanted a room to keep breathing without admitting it was terrified. Ren learned that before he opened his eyes. He knew U. A. by sound first. Not the whole school. Not the halls. Not the common room where Kaminari made fear noisy and Shinso made silence sharp. Not R-2 with its sealed window and terrible sign he had not seen yet. Not the orange cat mural, not the bolted kettle, not the shelf with Bentaro's photograph watching like an old soldier in Hana's scarf.
Medical. He knew medical. The hum of monitoring equipment here did not ask the same questions as Garaki's machines. It still measured him. It still listened through skin and ports and temperature and pulse. It still translated his body into lines someone else could read. But the room around those machines had different intentions. That mattered. Intentions did not erase straps. Intentions did not remove fever. Intentions did not make foreign things less foreign inside him. But they mattered.
A hand rested near his left wrist. Not on it. Near. Waiting. Recovery Girl. He knew without looking. The lab had touched to take. Recovery Girl touched after making sure his body had somewhere to refuse. Ren tried to open his eyes. The first attempt failed. The second brought light in broken pieces. Ceiling. White, but not the same white. Softer. A corner shadow. A medical light angled away from his face. A monitor to the right. Drip line. Temperature strip. Broad support brace over his right shoulder.
Left wrist wrapped. Chest free except for sensor bands. No restraints across his ribs. No transport frame. No hidden wall seam. No speaker voice. His breath stuttered. The monitor answered too quickly. Recovery Girl leaned into view.
"Eyes on me" He found her. Her face was stern enough to hold the room together by insult. Good.
"Where?" he tried The word came out dry, damaged, smaller than he meant.
"U. A. medical wing. Secured isolation. You are alive. You are not in that room. You are not required to explain anything before water" Water. His throat hurt at the word. She lifted a cup with a wide flexible rim.
"Small sip. If you try to prove anything to water, I will be disappointed creatively" Ren almost smiled. The cup touched his mouth. He drank. The water tasted like nothing. No plastic. No metal. No lab. Nothing had never been so good. He swallowed, coughed, regretted having a throat, and felt Recovery Girl's hand steady the cup away before he could choke properly.
"Bad at water" she said His eyes closed.
"Still better than barley" There was a sound to his left. Not from Recovery Girl. A broken breath. Kurose. Ren forced his eyes open again. She stood beside the bed, hands visible, no folder, no tablet in front of her. Her hair was tied back carelessly. Her eyes were red. Her jacket had a sleeve stained with something dark near the cuff. She looked like she had slept never and stood anyway. She did not speak immediately. That helped. If she said his name the wrong way, the monitor might betray both of them.
Finally, she said "Here" His chest hurt. Not graft. Not strap. Something else.
"Here" he whispered The monitor jumped. Recovery Girl glared at it like numbers were being rude. Kurose took one careful breath.
"Medical first. No questions. I am only here so the room remembers your name" Ren looked at her. The words entered slowly. The room remembers your name. His eyes burned. He turned his head away because crying would move too many things and he was tired of giving rooms measurable events. Recovery Girl saw anyway. Of course.
"Crying is medically permitted. Dramatic full-body sobbing is postponed" Ren made a sound that did not become a laugh. The door opened. Ren's body reacted before thought. Every old scar heated at once. The graft sites answered under skin like two wrong bells. Pain Suppressor flickered across his shoulder and almost erased the pain there. Panic followed the absence. Recovery Girl's voice snapped.
"Door opening. Known staff. No hostile" The room obeyed her voice before Ren could. Dr. Seno entered slowly, hands empty, face controlled and pale. Behind her, Nezu stood in the doorway but did not cross the threshold. No All Might. No Aizawa. No parents. Ren noticed every absence and hated himself for being relieved and hurt at the same time. Dr. Seno stopped two steps away from the bed.
"May I approach?" The question took too long to understand because Garaki had used similar words around choices he had already stolen. Ren stared at her. Dr. Seno did not move. Recovery Girl said "That is a real question" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Dr. Seno approached to the monitor, not to his body. Good. She looked at the numbers, then at him.
"You are medically unstable, but improving from the transport state. Fever remains high. Your right shoulder has severe soft tissue strain without complete structural rupture. Left wrist laceration shallow but aggravated. Graft sites inflamed. The foreign Quirk factors are active but not fully integrated" Foreign. Not his. He closed his eyes briefly. Dr. Seno's voice softened.
"I will say that every time if needed" Ren opened his eyes.
"What?"
"Foreign Quirk factors. Grafted under coercion. Present in your body. Not assumed to be part of your identity" The room blurred. Kurose looked down. Recovery Girl's mouth tightened. Ren tried to speak. The first attempt failed. The second came out broken.
"They are in me" Recovery Girl answered before anyone else could soften it.
"Yes" His breath shook.
"They are not mine""Yes" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Medically, they are present. Ethically, they are not yours unless you decide how to name them later. Those are separate statements" Ren stared at the ceiling. Separate statements. Garaki would have called them an eventual contradiction. U. A. called them separate statements. That mattered too. Nezu spoke from the doorway.
"I will remain outside unless invited" Ren turned his head slightly. The movement hurt. Nezu did not move. Small. Still. Fur flattened around the ears in a way that looked wrong on him. Ren looked at him for a long second. Then said "Outside is fine" Nezu bowed his head.
"Understood" No offense. No pressure. Good. Recovery Girl checked his temperature again. She swore. Not loudly. Enough. Dr. Seno looked at the monitor.
"The fever is not only infection or ordinary inflammation. Scar Tissue is building boundary architecture around both graft factors" Ren's right hand twitched. Boundary architecture. Garaki had said walls defined architecture. Ren's stomach turned. Kurose saw the change.
"Wrong word?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Garaki liked architecture" Kurose's face went cold. Dr. Seno immediately corrected herself.
"Boundary response. Scar containment. Not architecture" Ren breathed.
"Better" Recovery Girl glared at Dr. Seno. Dr. Seno accepted it.
"Thank you for telling us" Ren wanted to laugh. He had not told them much. A single word and they changed the room. That was almost unbearable. Dr. Seno continued, slower now.
"Scar containment is active around Pain Suppressor and Regenerative Scaffold" Ren stiffened. Names. Clean names. Knife names. Recovery Girl noticed.
"Working labels only" Ren's eyes stayed on the ceiling.
"Pain door" Dr. Seno paused.
"What?" His throat worked.
"Garaki called it Pain Gate. I called it pain door inside. Wrong door" Kurose's hands closed. Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened. Dr. Seno said "Then we do not use Pain Gate" Ren turned his head to her. She looked at him directly. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source.
"Not unless you choose it later. For now, we can call it pain modulation graft" Ren breathed.
"Okay""And the other?" He swallowed.
"Repair scaffold. Not healing. It recruits" Dr. Seno wrote nothing down in front of him. Maybe she would later. But not now.
"Repair scaffold graft" she said Ren nodded once. The movement was tiny. The room treated it as enough. Recovery Girl leaned closer.
"You voluntarily discharged information during transport. Do you remember?"
"Yes""Do you need to discharge more right now?" Kurose's face tightened as if the question hurt her. Ren looked at Recovery Girl. There were words in him. Garaki. trigger quality. operational function before identity. borrowed function. archive node four. shock. lower archive. fake voices. staged R-2. old diagnostics storage. trauma rehab. route learning. They used you. Some were already out. Some remained. Every word felt like something he needed to remove before it became infected. But his body was shaking.
The fever pressed against his skull. Pain Suppressor flickered again and stole the edges of his right shoulder. For a moment he could not tell whether the brace was touching him. Panic rose. Recovery Girl's hand appeared in his vision.
"Ren. Look at my hand" He did.
"Can you feel the bed under your back?" He searched. Yes. Mostly.
"Yes""Can you feel your left wrist?"
"Too much""Good enough. Can you feel the shoulder?" His breath caught.
"No. Less. Missing at edges" Recovery Girl's voice stayed firm.
"That is the graft misfiring. Not your body leaving. Not the lab returning. We are not letting the absence tell the room what is true" Ren gripped the sheet with his left fingers. Pain. Good. Real. His.
"Pain is route back" he whispered Recovery Girl's face changed. Not surprise. Recognition.
"Yes. But it does not get to be the only route" Kurose stepped closer, still not touching.
"My voice can be one" The monitor jumped again. This time Ren did not apologize.
"Dangerous" he whispered Kurose nodded.
"Yes. Garaki used voices" Recovery Girl looked at her sharply. Kurose kept her eyes on Ren.
"So I will not ask you to trust mine without proof. My proof is that I stop when you say stop" Ren looked at her. Stop. A real stop. Small no. His.
"Stop" he said Kurose stopped breathing for a fraction. Then stepped back. Not hurt. Not offended. Just back. Ren stared at her. The room held. No one punished the no. Kurose said from the new distance "Stopped" The fever broke something inside his chest. Not medically. Something tighter. His eyes filled.
"Come back" he whispered Kurose returned to the previous spot. No closer.
"Back" Recovery Girl looked away and pretended to adjust a line. Dr. Seno's face was wet. Nezu remained in the doorway, perfectly still. The room learned the rule. Not Garaki's rule. Ren's. Stop meant stop. Back meant back. That was stabilization too. Hana and Daichi were allowed in eleven minutes later. Recovery Girl made the eleven minutes feel like a court sentence. Ren spent them being checked, cooled, repositioned, and insulted into drinking two more small sips. Dr. Seno left to run analysis.
Nezu remained outside and then withdrew completely when Recovery Girl said fewer eyes meant fewer spikes. Kurose stayed until the parents arrived, then moved toward the wall where Ren could still see her but the center of the room became family. The door opened only after Recovery Girl announced it.
"Door opening. Hana and Daichi. No objects except one ridiculous umbrella outside because security has become theater" A tiny sound escaped Ren. Bentaro had made it. Good. Hana entered first. She stopped three steps inside. Daichi stopped behind her. For a second, they were not parents crossing a room. They were two people standing at the edge of a country they had feared no longer existed. Ren saw what they saw because their faces told him. He was pale.
Too thin after only days because fever and grafts had eaten him fast. Hair damp. Left wrist bandaged. Right shoulder braced. Sensor bands across chest. Lines. Ports. Faint pale marks under the skin near both graft sites. A body returned with foreign grammar written inside it. Hana covered her mouth. Daichi's face went very still. Ren's first instinct was to apologize. It rose before thought. Before language. Before he could stop it. Recovery Girl's cane hit the floor once.
"No sorry before alive" Hana made a sound that was almost a sob and almost a laugh. Daichi closed his eyes. Ren breathed. Alive first. He forced the apology back down. It tasted like blood. Hana approached slowly, hands visible because everyone had learned too much.
"Warm or cold?" The question broke him more than any greeting could have. His mouth trembled.
"Both" Hana nodded as if that answer belonged in the world.
"Then both" Daichi came to the other side of the bed. He did not ask chair. There was no chair to ask about. Instead, he looked at the support brace around Ren's right shoulder.
"Is it holding properly?" Ren stared at him. Then a laugh cracked out of him, small and painful and not enough.
"Bad chairs are traitors" Daichi's face broke.
"Yes" Hana reached toward Ren's forehead and stopped.
"May I?" Ren looked at her hand. Warmth. Real warmth. His body remembered Garaki using a fake voice. Not this. Not this.
"Yes" Hana touched his forehead. Her hand was warm in the old way. The inherited way. The way that had nothing to do with grafts, nothing to do with Garaki, nothing to do with data. His face crumpled. Hana bent over him, not climbing into the bed because lines and braces and Recovery Girl's glare existed, but close enough that her hair brushed the pillow.
"I know" she whispered Ren shook his head.
"You do not""No" she said "I do not. I know you are here" Daichi's hand hovered near Ren's left fingers. Ren shifted his hand one inch. Daichi took the permission and placed two fingers under Ren's palm, not gripping, just giving him something stable to press against. Ren pressed. Daichi held. Light. Steady. Paternal line response, Garaki had said. Ren's stomach lurched. The monitor jumped. Recovery Girl's head snapped up. Daichi froze. Ren forced the words out before anyone could misunderstand.
"Garaki talked about your Quirks" Hana went still. Daichi's face darkened. Ren swallowed.
"Maternal stress response. paternal line. grip. structure. He used it" Hana's hand stayed on his forehead. It trembled. But it stayed. Daichi's fingers remained under Ren's palm. His voice was low.
"Then we take the words back" Ren looked at him. Daichi's eyes were wet and furious.
"Warm is your mother's hand before it is his data" Hana breathed in sharply. Daichi continued "Grip is my hand under yours before it is his note" Ren's throat closed. Hana leaned closer.
"He does not get first claim on what came from love" The monitor did something dramatic enough that Recovery Girl pointed at it.
"Emotional spike. Predictable. Acceptable. Do not turn it into a family opera" Hana gave her a look through tears. Recovery Girl looked unimpressed. Ren almost smiled. Daichi said "We can make it a small family opera""No" Recovery Girl said Hana whispered "Later" Ren's eyes closed. For a few breaths, the room held them there. Hana's hand. Daichi's fingers. Kurose at the wall. Recovery Girl guarding the numbers. Pain present. Pain missing at the shoulder edge. Repair scaffold warmth under the brace.
Scar Tissue boundary lines holding like barbed thread around foreign factors. They are in me. They are not mine. But warmth and grip came from before. That mattered. After three minutes, Recovery Girl made Hana move her hand because Ren's temperature was rising again. Hana obeyed, but slowly enough to make it a moral objection. Daichi withdrew his fingers only after Ren relaxed his palm. The absence of touch hurt. Not like the grafts. Different. Allowed. Ren opened his eyes.
"R-2?" Hana's face changed. Daichi looked at Recovery Girl. Recovery Girl said "Not tonight" Ren knew that. He hated that he had asked anyway. Hana leaned into his sight.
"R-2 is waiting""Changed?"
"Yes" His heart stuttered. Hana saw.
"Not bad. Chosen" Kurose stepped forward.
"Mina made a sign" Ren blinked slowly.
"Fake paperwork lost" Kurose stared.
"You heard?"
"You told me. Transport""Oh" Her face softened. Ren's mouth moved.
"Trustworthy sign" Hana wiped her face.
"Terrible sign" Daichi said "Terrible things can be structurally sound" Recovery Girl muttered "That explains several faculty meetings" Ren's eyes drifted shut. The sedative pulled. The fever pushed. The pain door flickered. Wrong door. No. Pain modulation graft. Repair scaffold graft. Scar containment. Names mattered. He needed the names right before sleep.
"Pain modulation. Repair scaffold. Foreign. Contained" Dr. Seno's voice came from near the door. Ren had not heard her return.
"Yes" He opened his eyes halfway. She stood just inside, holding a tablet angled away from him.
"Preliminary imaging confirms containment around both grafts. There are early connection attempts under stress, but not full integration" Ren whispered "Borrowed" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Kurose told me" His breath hitched.
"Under protest""Yes. Borrowed function under protest" Ren breathed out. The phrase sounded different in her voice. Less like data. More like a label on a locked drawer he still owned. Dr. Seno looked at Recovery Girl.
"There is another concern" Recovery Girl's face soured.
"Of course there is" Hana stiffened. Daichi's hand found her shoulder. Dr. Seno spoke carefully.
"Scar Tissue is not simply walling the grafts off. It is remodeling the boundary tissue rapidly. Much faster than expected. If the current pace continues, the containment phase may not last long" Ren looked at her.
"What next?" Dr. Seno hesitated. Recovery Girl said "Answer plainly" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Either rejection crisis, which we are watching for, or integration crisis" The word entered the room. Integration. Ren's vision sharpened.
"No" Recovery Girl touched his blanket near his knee, not him.
"Not acceptance. Biology" Dr. Seno said "Integration does not mean emotional ownership. It means Scar Tissue may break the grafts down into functions it can control or survive. Pain modulation may become part of its stress-routing system. Repair scaffold may become part of its recovery lattice" Ren's breathing sped. The monitor betrayed him again. Hana's hand twitched but did not reach. Daichi looked like someone had put a blade on the table and called it medicine. Ren whispered "They become mine?"
Kurose answered before the doctors could.
"No" Everyone looked at her. She stepped forward.
"They become in your body differently. That is all we know. The word mine waits for you" Ren stared at her. The word mine waits for you. Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Good sentence" Dr. Seno said "Agreed" Ren swallowed. The panic did not vanish. But it stopped growing. The word could wait. Good. Let it wait forever if needed. Dr. Seno continued "The next few hours are critical. Fever may rise. Pain perception may become unreliable. You may experience periods where pain vanishes, returns, or redirects. Repair activity may cause hunger, nausea, tremors, and tissue heat. Scar containment may spread visibly under the skin. We will keep you monitored" Ren closed his eyes.
"Sounds fun" Daichi whispered "Painfully means yes" Ren's eyes opened. He looked at his father. Daichi looked startled by his own words, as if an old joke had escaped into a room too serious for it. Then Ren smiled. Small. Exhausted. Real.
"Painfully" Hana laughed and cried at once. Recovery Girl sighed.
"Family opera continues despite medical advice" The crisis began after midnight. It did not arrive dramatically. No alarm at first. No sudden scream. No violent lattice flare. Just a temperature rise. Half a degree. Then another. Recovery Girl noticed before the monitor alarm because she trusted people less than she trusted her own suspicion. She sat forward. Dr. Seno checked the lines. The night nurse adjusted cooling.
Hana and Daichi had been ordered to rest in the guardian room and had refused until Recovery Girl threatened to bar them from morning contact. Kurose had fallen asleep in a chair outside the isolation room with one hand still wrapped around a sealed copy of Ren's voluntary discharge. Ren slept through the first fever rise. Then Pain Suppressor misfired. His eyes opened wide. No pain. Not reduced. Gone. For three seconds, his body became a map with missing countries. His right shoulder vanished.
His left wrist vanished. His mouth vanished. The pressure of the bed vanished under his back in patches. He could see the ceiling. He could hear Recovery Girl. But his body was full of holes. Panic slammed into him. The monitor screamed. Ren tried to move and could not tell which limbs answered. Scar Tissue flared. Pale lines rose under both arms, then across the upper chest, then down the right shoulder. Not Scar Lattice as before. Not the familiar external emergency bracing.
These lines were thinner, deeper, running between old scars and the graft boundary sites. Dr. Seno's voice cut through.
"Pain modulation graft firing globally" Recovery Girl snapped "Localize it or counter it""I am trying" Ren could not find his hands. That was worse than the lab. At least in the lab, pain had told him where the theft was. Now the theft had become absence. He gasped. No. No. No. Kurose's voice appeared from the doorway, breathless.
"Ren" The monitor spiked harder. Recovery Girl shouted "Not close!" Kurose stopped. She had woken and come to the door, hair loose, face pale, hands visible.
"Stopped" she said immediately The word cut through the panic. Stopped. A real stop. Ren searched for it. The room had learned the rule. Stop meant stop. He dragged attention toward the word. Pain returned in the left wrist first. Sharp. Small. Blessed. He clung to it.
"Left wrist" he rasped Recovery Girl leaned in.
"Good. Find it""Left wrist. mouth. shoulder missing. back missing" Dr. Seno worked at the line.
"Counter-stimulating local feedback. Slow" The Repair Scaffold flared next. Heat gathered under the right shoulder, trying to support tissue that Pain Suppressor had made invisible. Scar Tissue surged between them, not rejecting now, not accepting, but forcing channels narrow enough to survive. The pale lines under Ren's skin thickened. Hana's voice came from the hall.
"What is happening?" Daichi's voice behind her.
"Hana, wait" Recovery Girl looked furious enough to combust.
"Who let them back?" Kurose did not look away from Ren.
"I did" Recovery Girl glared. Kurose said "He needs proof the room is not lying" Hana appeared in the doorway behind Kurose, Daichi at her shoulder, both stopped by the threshold because someone had drawn rules there and they were choosing to obey them while every part of them wanted not to. Hana's voice shook.
"Warm or cold?" Ren could barely hear through the monitor. His body answered before his mind. Warm. Cold. Gone. Burning. Missing. His mouth trembled.
"Both" Hana pressed both hands to her own chest to keep from reaching.
"Then both" Daichi's voice followed, low and steady.
"Floor still here" Ren's eyes flew open. The childhood mark. Three lines and a base. Floor still here. His left fingers twitched against the sheet. One. Two. Three. He dragged the fingertip under them. No blood this time. Just pressure. Here. Pain returned to his palm. The global absence receded. Not because the graft stopped. Because Scar Tissue forced it into channels. Pain modulation narrowed around the right shoulder and wrist. Repair Scaffold settled beneath the shoulder and old rib strain.
Scar containment connected both graft boundaries with thin, burning lines, then locked them behind something like scar tissue and something like a gate and something like a brace. Ren arched once. Not violently. Precisely. Every monitor screamed. Then stabilized into a pattern no one in the room recognized. Dr. Seno stared at the screen. Recovery Girl looked at Ren's skin. Pale lines glowed faintly under the surface, running from old scars to graft sites and back again, not spreading freely, not fading.
A new structure. No. Not structure. Ren would hate structure. Dr. Seno swallowed.
"Containment has changed" Recovery Girl's voice was sharp.
"To what?" Dr. Seno looked from the monitor to Ren. Then to Kurose. She chose the words like stepping through glass.
"Functional scar integration" The room went silent except for the machines. Ren stared at the ceiling. He could feel his body again. Not correctly. But enough. Pain existed, lowered at the shoulder edge. Repair warmth existed, held under the brace. Scar Tissue existed around both like a hand gripping a blade by the handle because letting it fall would cut the floor. Functional. Scar. Integration. No. His breath hitched. Kurose stepped one inch closer and stopped.
"The word mine still waits" Ren turned his head toward her. The monitor trembled. She repeated "Still waits" Hana, at the doorway, whispered "In you does not mean yours" Daichi added "Working does not mean chosen" Recovery Girl's voice came last, hard and absolute.
"Survival is not consent" The panic did not vanish. It became something he could breathe around. Ren closed his eyes. The grafts were quieter now. Not gone. Not separate in the same way. Pain modulation sat behind Scar Tissue's boundary, no longer firing randomly across the whole body. Repair scaffold pulsed beneath damaged tissue only where Scar Tissue allowed a channel. The original Quirk had not accepted them like gifts. It had seized them like dangerous tools and locked them into scar.
A body surviving contradiction. Ren's voice was almost gone.
"Graft Lattice?" Dr. Seno went still. Recovery Girl looked ready to object to every word in existence. Ren opened his eyes halfway.
"Not name. Description" Kurose said "Working description only" Dr. Seno nodded slowly.
"Working description only" Ren breathed.
"Scar Tissue. Graft Lattice. Foreign functions. Contained. Borrowed" Recovery Girl leaned closer.
"Under protest" His mouth trembled.
"Yes" Kurose wiped her face with one hand. Hana held the doorframe like it was the only reason she was not on the floor. Daichi kept one arm around her and one hand open at his side, as if holding the air steady until Ren could hold it himself. Dr. Seno looked at the monitor again.
"The integration crisis is resolving" Recovery Girl did not relax.
"Stabilization is not healing" Ren closed his eyes. Good sentence. Cruel sentence. Trustworthy. Hours later, morning came without asking permission. Ren woke to dim light and a body that felt rewritten in pencil over scars. Not healed. Not stronger in any clean way. Different. His right shoulder still hurt, but the pain no longer swallowed the entire joint. It sat behind a gate he could feel but not open or close on command. The left wrist throbbed. His mouth hurt. Fever lingered, lower now.
Hunger gnawed with a frightening focus, as if the Repair Scaffold had left a bill and expected payment immediately. His skin looked almost normal at first. Then he moved his left fingers and pale lines appeared under the forearm, faint, branching toward the graft site before fading. Ren stared at them. Recovery Girl noticed from her chair.
"Yes. I see it" He swallowed.
"Is it over?"
"No" Trustworthy.
"Is the integration complete?" Recovery Girl hesitated. Then sighed.
"Functionally, the crisis phase appears complete. Emotionally, morally, psychologically, and every other word that actually matters, no" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Good""Terrible, but yes" Dr. Seno, who had slept for perhaps eleven minutes in the corner and looked ashamed of that, came to the bedside.
"Scar Tissue has fully incorporated the two graft factors as controlled subsidiary functions. Not separate Quirks in active behavior anymore. They are not diffusing independently. Pain modulation and repair scaffold now operate only through Scar Tissue channels" Ren turned his head toward her.
"One Quirk?" Dr. Seno's eyes softened.
"One evolved Quirk with graft-derived functions" He closed his eyes. Garaki had been right about the science. The thought made nausea rise. No. Incomplete. Garaki had been right that it could be done. That was exactly why he could not be allowed to own it. The sentence formed before he knew where it came from. He did not say it. Not yet. Recovery Girl watched him.
"What?" Ren breathed slowly.
"Science true. Method monstrous" Dr. Seno's face changed.
"Yes" Kurose, from the doorway, said "Knowledge born from atrocity is contaminated" Ren opened his eyes. She looked worse than yesterday, but more upright. Nezu stood beside her, outside the threshold again. He said "And contaminated knowledge must be handled with gloves, not worshipped or ignored" Ren looked at him.
"Garaki was right about possibility" Nezu's gaze was very still.
"Yes" Ren's throat tightened.
"That is worse""Yes" Kurose stepped in after Recovery Girl nodded.
"But he was wrong about ownership" Ren looked down at his hands. Pale lines slept under the skin. Foreign functions. Contained. Borrowed. Integrated by survival, not consent. Not his? In him. Part of how the body now survived. The word mine waited. He let it wait.
"Not his" Ren whispered Recovery Girl nodded.
"Never his" Hana and Daichi came in after morning stabilization. Hana looked at the new pale lines for a long time. She did not flinch. That was probably the bravest thing Ren had seen all week. Daichi looked at his hands, then at Ren's, then at the brace.
"Is it holding?" Ren's eyes burned again.
"Yes" Daichi nodded.
"Then we keep deciding what that means" Hana sat beside the bed.
"Warm or cold?" Ren looked at his body. Fever low. Graft functions quiet. Scar Tissue tired. Everything wrong, but present.
"Warm" Hana's mouth trembled.
"Then warm" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"There is something else" Recovery Girl immediately looked angry.
"Of course there is" Nezu stepped closer to the threshold. Kurose's eyes sharpened. Ren's breathing changed. Not fever. Fragment. The lab voice. Garaki. The archive node. Shock. All For One behind the room. The word not spoken enough. The place not yet fully formed. Smoke. Night. Cameras. A crowd watching through screens. All Might standing smaller and larger than anyone alive should stand. A hand pointing toward the future. The last flame of a symbol. Ren's scars warmed. Not graft. Fragment. Recovery Girl noticed.
"Ren" He stared at nothing.
"There is a place" Nezu went still. Kurose's hand closed around the rail. Recovery Girl said "Stop if it hurts too much" Ren swallowed. The word scraped out of him like metal from a wound.
"Kamino" Silence. At the doorway, All Might had arrived without anyone hearing him. Or maybe everyone had been too focused on Ren to notice the Symbol of Peace standing just beyond the room. His face changed when he heard the name. Ren turned his head slowly. All Might looked back. Not as the Symbol. Not fully. As someone who had been named by a future he already feared. Ren's voice was barely there.
"You" Recovery Girl snapped "Enough" Ren closed his eyes. The fragment did not leave. Kamino. The country watching. The voice behind rooms. Victory. Cost. The last of it. He did not say the rest. Not yet. But All Might had heard enough to step closer to the threshold and stop there, hands open, face pale under strength. Ren opened his eyes again.
"Not now" All Might nodded once. Not relieved. Not spared. Waiting.
"Not now" he said Recovery Girl glared at everyone.
"Finally, someone learns timing" Ren almost smiled. The smile failed halfway into exhaustion. Hana took his left hand with permission. Daichi stood behind her. Kurose stayed near the wall. Nezu remained at the threshold. All Might outside it. Recovery Girl beside the bed. Dr. Seno near the monitors. The room held too many futures and one living boy. Stabilization was not healing. Integration was not consent. Survival was not ownership. Kamino was not now. For this breath, Ren was here.
For this breath, that had to be enough.
