The first count after the attack ended did not feel like victory. It felt like someone reading a list over a hole. Kurose stood in the main hall with the wall map behind her, smoke still pressed faintly against sealed glass, one sleeve smeared with ash from a doorway she had never crossed. Her voice held steady because someone's had to. Aizawa stood beside her, scarf darkened at the edges, eyes bloodshot, posture too straight.
Mandalay sat near the medical space with Kota tucked against her side, one hand still on his shoulder. Tiger stood behind Midoriya's stretcher like a wall that had learned grief and refused to step away. Pixie-Bob paced in three steps and turns, three steps and turns, hands flexing as if the earth beneath the lodge had personally failed her. Thirteen remained at the main entrance, still guarding a door no one was currently trying to breach. Ragdoll's place on the wall map stayed red.
RAGDOLL MISSING — TAKEN No one had changed the words. No one had made them softer. Ren sat in the central target zone, hands open on his knees, Shinso to his right, not handler, not medical, a person standing on the floor. His palms were warm now rather than burning. His forearms had cooled. No ridging. No thread. No lattice. No activation. No movement. That part had become a strange kind of injury. Kurose read.
"Group One. Midoriya Izuku, recovered alive, critical injuries, under medical stabilization. Uraraka Ochaco, inside, irritant exposure mild, nausea reported, no major injury. Iida Tenya, inside, minor strain, route support stable. Asui Tsuyu, inside, irritant exposure mild, no major injury" Each name entered the room. Answered. Held.
"Group Two. Bakugo Katsuki, inside, irritant exposure, minor injuries, target status elevated. Kirishima Eijiro, inside, laceration and impact bruising, stable. Sero Hanta, inside, irritant exposure, tape burns, stable. Kaminari Denki, inside, irritant exposure and Quirk fatigue, stable" Bakugo stood near the decontamination area with a towel around his shoulders and rage still burning through exhaustion. When Kurose read target status elevated, his jaw snapped tight enough to be heard.
No one looked at him for too long. That had become another survival skill.
"Group Three. Todoroki Shoto, inside, heat regulation stable, minor smoke exposure. Yaoyorozu Momo, inside, Quirk fatigue mild-moderate, stable. Tokoyami Fumikage, inside, Dark Shadow agitation controlled, stable. Shoji Mezo, inside, minor abrasions, stable" Tokoyami's beak lowered. Shoji had one arm resting gently across Dark Shadow's nearest edge, not restraining, grounding.
"Conditional and modified-route candidates. Akiyama Ren, inside, target protocol active, no Scar Tissue activation, heat response resolving. Shinso Hitoshi, inside, authorized Quirk use once, disruption support stable. Kenta, Arai, Sano, and others accounted for inside" Sano looked like he wanted to cry because being counted had become an event. Arai wrote counted on her own sheet and immediately looked annoyed at herself. Kenta just nodded.
"Pussycats. Mandalay active. Tiger active. Pixie-Bob active. Ragdoll missing, likely captured by object-compression hostile" Mandalay closed her eyes. Kota pressed closer. Ren's hands warmed one degree. He reported under his breath.
"Ragdoll line trigger. Mild heat increase. No image. No movement" Shinso heard.
"Logged" Kurose did too. She did not interrupt the count.
"Immediate student status. No student confirmed captured. Critical injuries present. Hostile withdrawal incomplete beyond perimeter. Lodge compromised by object route. Evacuation protocol pending security corridor confirmation" No student confirmed captured. The sentence should have lifted the hall. It did not. It landed like a door that had closed with someone still on the other side. Ragdoll was not a student. That made the sentence true. That made it worse.
Kota's voice cut through the hall before anyone else could speak.
"But Ragdoll" Mandalay's grip tightened on his shoulder. Kurose turned toward him.
"Yes" No correction. No adult lie.
"Yes. Ragdoll was taken" Kota's face crumpled and hardened at once.
"So the count is wrong" Kurose's voice stayed steady.
"The student count is complete. The staff count is not" Kota looked at her like he hated accuracy and needed it anyway. Ren understood. His chart would need both lines. No student captured. Ragdoll taken. Both true. Neither enough. Recovery Girl's voice came through the tablet from the medical space.
"Evacuation decision?" Aizawa answered.
"As soon as corridor is confirmed. Lodge is compromised. We do not sleep here" Several students looked toward the windows. The idea of sleeping in the lodge had apparently remained alive in their minds until that second. Then it died. Good. Terrible. Kurose lifted the next sheet.
"Evacuation rules. No one moves alone. No one touches unknown objects. No one catches falling objects. No one breaks assigned line. Targets do not stack unless ordered. Medical path moves first. Combat reserves move outside student line, not ahead of staff. Conditional target remains visible, not isolated. Bakugo remains visible, not isolated. If visibility drops, contact count begins immediately" Bakugo snapped "Targets do not stack?" Aizawa looked at him.
"You and Akiyama do not stand together unless staff orders it" Bakugo's eyes flicked toward Ren.
"Because that would be convenient""Yes" Bakugo's mouth twisted.
"Disgusting""Accurate" Ren said "Agreed" Bakugo pointed at him.
"Stop agreeing with me during emergencies" Ren answered "Stop being correct during emergencies" The hall went silent. Then Kaminari, half wrapped in a blanket, made a small sound that might have been a laugh if his lungs had been less offended by smoke. Bakugo turned slowly. Kaminari looked at the floor.
"No heroic laughing" Sano whispered "That is not on a card" Kurose said "Do not make it one" Sano nodded with tragic obedience. Aizawa continued as if the world had not nearly become absurd.
"Medical evacuation first. Midoriya, Kaminari, irritant-exposure students, and anyone needing transport. Second line: noncombat students and conditional group. Third line: combat-capable students under staff. Bakugo remains in second line under guard, not third" Bakugo's head lifted.
"What?"
"You are a target. You do not become rear guard""I can still fight""Yes""So put me where fighting is useful" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Your usefulness to the enemy currently exceeds your usefulness to the rear guard" Bakugo went still. That one hit. Not because it was cruel. Because it was precise. Kirishima stepped forward.
"Sir, if he's second line, can I be near him?" Aizawa looked at him.
"Assigned visual contact, not emotional heroics" Kirishima nodded.
"Yes sir" Sero lifted one hand weakly.
"Same""Kaminari is medical until cleared" Kaminari raised a thumb from under the blanket.
"I accept being a tragic electric civilian" Jiro, from across the hall, said "Finally, self-awareness" Kaminari's thumb lowered. Aizawa pointed.
"Focus" Everyone did. Ren watched Bakugo process the sentence. Your usefulness to the enemy currently exceeds your usefulness to the rear guard. Bakugo hated it. Ren could see that. But he did not explode. He looked toward the east door where smoke still grayed the seams, then at Kirishima, then at Ren. For one second, something like recognition passed between them. A target did not become less dangerous by wanting to be a weapon. Aizawa looked at Ren next.
"Akiyama. Evacuation status" Ren reported.
"Yellow-red. Palms warm. No ridging. No lattice. Dizziness resolved. Target association active. Failure association regarding Ragdoll. I can walk under visible escort" Recovery Girl said "No running. No carrying. No field calls unless asked. If heat rises above moderate, chair transfer" Ren's entire body rejected chair transfer on principle. He said "Accepted" Shinso's eyes flicked to him. Good. He had heard the rejection and the acceptance both. Kurose said "Awareness support for evacuation.
Shinso proposed until vehicle loading. Daily consent remains active if possible" Ren breathed.
"I consent to Shinso within awareness range during evacuation to vehicle loading. Not handler. Not medical. Revocable" Shinso said "I consent to awareness range during evacuation to vehicle loading. Not handler. Not medical. Revocable. If marbles appear, I am allowed to hate them out loud" Kurose wrote.
"Approved" Bakugo muttered "Why is every damn thing approved?" Shinso looked at him.
"Because unapproved instinct is how people get put in balls" The hall froze. Shinso's face went pale as soon as he said it. Too sharp. Too soon. Mandalay flinched. Kota's hand tightened. Shinso's eyes dropped. The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"Status. Regret. Anger spill. Apology owed" Kurose looked at Mandalay. Mandalay's face was tight. But she nodded once. Shinso turned toward her and Kota.
"I am sorry. That was about fear, not Ragdoll" Kota stared at him. For a second, Ren thought the boy would lash out. Instead, Kota said "It was true though" That was worse. Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Still wrong place" Kota looked away.
"Yeah" Mandalay closed her eyes for one second. Then said "Accepted" Shinso nodded once and returned to position. Trustworthy data hurt in public. Evacuation preparation turned the lodge into a moving map. Arai redrew routes on three sheets because the wall map could not come with them. Kenta placed tape markers along the main hall to the west exit, then removed one when Thirteen said it would catch shoes.
Yaoyorozu created lightweight shields, not handheld by students but mounted on improvised poles so staff could move them without direct skin contact if objects appeared. Todoroki reinforced the temperature around Midoriya's transport without icing the floor. Iida, despite strain, was allowed to serve as verbal route counter under supervision, which looked like the only thing keeping him from vibrating out of his own skin.
Uraraka sat near Midoriya's stretcher until Recovery Girl ordered her to drink water and look away for thirty seconds. She obeyed. Barely. Ren sat until called. That was harder than any route he had walked. From his chair, he watched the safe zone transform one more time. Shelter into evacuation line. Center into corridor. Stillness into movement. Movement into risk. Kurose had said target is not center. Now the line had to prove it. Aizawa left to confirm the corridor with Thirteen and Tiger.
Pixie-Bob held the outer earth screen. Mandalay maintained communication, though every use of her Quirk seemed to carve another line into her face. Ragdoll's absence sat beside her like a second body. Kota approached Ren while the adults were speaking near the exit. Shinso shifted slightly. Ren lifted one hand. Allowed. Kota stopped outside arm's reach. Good.
"You're leaving too""Yes""Because they tried to take you""Yes" His mouth twisted.
"So you get protected" Ren breathed.
"Yes" The answer hurt. Kota looked toward the medical room.
"Deku got hurt because he came" Ren did not correct the name.
"Yes""You didn't come""No" The boy's eyes were sharp and wet.
"I thought that meant you were scared""It did" Kota blinked. Ren continued "It also meant I was following the route" Kota looked down.
"He came""Yes""You stayed""Yes""Both helped" The words came like they were being dragged out by force. Ren felt his chest tighten.
"Yes" Kota looked furious that the world allowed two answers.
"That's stupid" Ren nodded.
"Yes" This time, Kota did not object to the agreement. He looked at Ren's open hands.
"Are they still hot?"
"Warm""Does it hurt?"
"Yes""Why don't you close them?" Ren looked at his palms. Because closed hands wanted to grip. Because gripping wanted to act. Because open hands told the room he was not hiding activation. Because open hands made him visible.
"Because people need to see they are not changing" Kota stared.
"That's awful""Yes" The boy looked toward Mandalay. Then back.
"Ragdoll disappeared and nobody saw enough" Ren said nothing. Kota swallowed.
"If I see something, I'll say it" Ren's throat tightened.
"That helps""It's not enough""No" Kota's eyes narrowed.
"But it's something" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Kota turned away fast, as if the conversation had become too visible. Shinso watched him go.
"Kid is getting dangerously functional" Ren said "Do not collect him""I am not. I am observing a route hazard""Good distinction""Do not praise me""I did not""You thought it" Ren almost smiled. Then the west door opened. Aizawa entered.
"Corridor confirmed for first movement. Smoke reduced but still present. Object threat unknown. Evacuation begins now" The room became a line. Not immediately. There was a moment where every student understood that staying had been hard and leaving would be another kind of hard. Then staff moved, and the line formed because training had already carved channels into fear. Medical first. Midoriya's stretcher moved through the west route with Tiger and Thirteen.
Recovery Girl's tablet stayed attached to the transport frame, her voice still snapping instructions. Uraraka walked five steps behind under staff order, not beside, because beside would make her look down and looking down would make her stop. Iida counted turns from behind her.
"One. Clear. Two. Step. Three. Hold" Kota walked with Mandalay, not in the medical line, but close enough to keep seeing Midoriya until the turn took him. Ren saw the boy's face when the stretcher disappeared around the corner. Not his door. Still. The line continued. Kaminari and irritant-exposure students. Sero. Kirishima. Bakugo under target guard. Bakugo hated every part of it. He walked with Kirishima on one side and a staff member on the other, not at the rear, not at the front, visible.
Sero followed behind despite coughing, because visual line had become a language none of them could forget. When Bakugo passed Ren's chair, he stopped for half a second. Kurose said "Move" Bakugo did not look at her. He looked at Ren.
"Don't get balled" The hall went completely silent. Ren answered after one breath.
"Do not get extracted" Bakugo's mouth twitched with fury and something else.
"Work on your threats""Work on your route compliance" Kirishima made the mistake of smiling. Bakugo turned.
"Walk" Kirishima walked. The line moved. Then Ren's group. Kurose came to his left. Shinso to his right and half-step back. Arai ahead with route paper. Kenta behind. Sano somewhere in the second cluster, clutching no cards now because both hands were needed. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu would move later with interior support. Aizawa remained near the west exit. Thirteen held the door. Pixie-Bob's earth barrier covered the exterior approach. Ren stood. Warm palms. No ridges.
"Status. Yellow-red. Standing. Palms warm. No lattice. Dizziness absent. Target association active. I can walk" Recovery Girl said "Walk" He walked. The west corridor smelled like smoke, wet wood, and the bitter trace of irritant held at the edges by sealed cloth. The floorboards creaked under the line. Every step sounded too loud because everyone was listening for a click. Arai whispered from ahead "No objects visible" Kenta said behind "Route clear" Shinso said softly "Breathing?" Ren answered "Yes""Hands?"
"Open""Good enough" They reached the first turn. A tiny round pebble sat near the baseboard. Everyone stopped. Ren's heat spiked from warm to moderate. Arai lifted one hand.
"Object visible. Natural pebble possible. No touch" Kurose called "Hold" Thirteen moved forward with a long-handled dustpan taken from the supply closet, because the universe had become ridiculous and dustpans were now anti-capture technology. No one laughed. Thirteen angled the dustpan under the pebble without skin contact and tipped it into a metal bucket attached to a pole. Nothing vanished. Pebble remained pebble. Still, Thirteen sealed the bucket. Kurose said "Route continues" Ren reported.
"Moderate heat after pebble. No image. Heat decreasing. Continue" The line moved. That was evacuation now. Every pebble a question. Every question a delay. Every delay a chance. Outside, the forest looked wrong in daylight after battle. Smoke hung low among the trees. Earth barriers stood where there had been open path. Branches were broken. Training constructs had collapsed into mud and stone.
The road to the evacuation vehicles had been turned into a corridor between Pixie-Bob's raised walls and Thirteen's controlled perimeter. The sky above was too blue. Ren hated it. No weather should look that clean over this much ash.
"Status" Kurose said"Yellow-red. Exterior. Smoke visual. Palms moderate. No image. No movement impulse beyond line""Good" They walked. No running. No heroic movement. No clean moment. The vehicles waited in a staggered line, not buses now but secure transports and medical vans. Police had arrived at the outer perimeter. Pro heroes not from the camp stood in positions Ren did not know. Their faces were grim, unfamiliar, and too late to be comforting. All Might was not there. Ren had known he would not be.
Still, part of him looked. Then reported.
"Looking for All Might impulse. No visual. No heat change" Kurose's eyes flicked to him.
"Logged" Shinso's voice was low.
"That one hurt?"
"Yes""Good report" The medical van doors closed around Midoriya. Kota stood outside until Mandalay guided him toward another vehicle. He looked back once at Ren. Not accusing. Not asking. Just looking. Ren lifted one open hand slightly. Kota hesitated. Then lifted his own hand back, small and angry and shaking. The doors closed. Ren reached his assigned transport. Not the same as Bakugo. Targets do not stack. Bakugo stood two vehicles away, arguing with Aizawa about being placed inside before everyone else.
Aizawa was winning because Aizawa did not require Bakugo's consent for that category. Kirishima stood nearby with a bandage on his forehead. Sero leaned against the vehicle and looked like standing was a personal favor to gravity. Kaminari was already inside, muttering about tragic electric civilians. Bakugo saw Ren again. No words this time. Just a glare that said alive and angry and not taken. Ren nodded once. Alive. Not taken. Not victory. Enough to board.
Kurose entered the transport with Ren, Shinso, Arai, Kenta, and two other conditional students. Thirteen would ride in the lead escort. Aizawa remained between vehicles until every door shut. Inside, the transport smelled like disinfectant and smoke carried on clothing. The seats faced inward. Ren sat where directed, visible to Kurose, not beside a window, not near the door. Shinso sat across from him, awareness range renewed for transport with words that felt automatic and therefore necessary.
Kurose checked the roster again.
"Akiyama""Here""Shinso""Here""Arai""Here""Kenta""Here""Sano" From the next seat, small.
"Here" His hands were empty. That looked wrong. Then he lifted one finger.
"I mentally made seven cards" Kurose closed her eyes.
"Do not manifest them""Yes ma'am" The transport doors closed. The sound hit Ren harder than expected. Closed door. Moving container. Target protocol. Object route. His palms warmed.
"Yellow-red. Door closure trigger. Palms moderate. No image. No lattice. Request visible check" Kurose said "Visible check" Arai looked around.
"No unknown objects visible. Floor clear. Vents sealed. Door locked from staff control. Windows fixed. Students visible. No one alone" Kenta added "Path to exit blocked by protocol, not debris" Shinso said "I am visible. Unfortunately" Ren breathed. Heat decreased.
"Good" Kurose wrote. The transport began to move. Camp receded through the sealed window behind Kurose's shoulder, visible only in fragments: earth wall, smoke, a torn training flag, Pixie-Bob standing with both hands pressed to the ground, Mandalay near a vehicle with Kota, Aizawa's scarf moving in the wind, the lodge shrinking into trees. Ragdoll was not there. Ren wrote the line in his head. No. Not yet. He did not have the chart in his hands. Maybe that was good. Maybe he would write it later.
Maybe some lines needed to wait until the hand stopped shaking. The secure convoy moved down the mountain. For a while, no one spoke. Then Sano said quietly "No student confirmed" No one answered. He swallowed.
"But Ragdoll" Still no one answered. Arai said finally "Both lines remain" Sano nodded.
"Both lines remain" Ren closed his eyes. Both lines remained. The convoy reached the lower security checkpoint before the first guardian calls were authorized. Not full calls. Controlled status contact. Alive notice first. Details later. Kurose handed Ren the secured phone.
"Two minutes. Your parents know there was an attack. They know you are alive. They know you are under protection. They do not know target specifics yet" Ren took the phone. His hand shook. No heat spike. Just human. Hana answered on the first ring.
"Ren?" He closed his eyes.
"I am alive" A sound came through the line. Not quite sob. Not quite breath. Daichi's voice behind hers.
"Speaker" Hana obeyed, probably for the first time in her life without argument. Ren said "I am alive. I am being evacuated. I am under staff protection. I have no major injury. I did not activate Scar Tissue" Hana's voice broke.
"Food?" The question made no sense. It made perfect sense.
"I ate breakfast. I do not know dinner yet" Daichi exhaled.
"Status?"
"Yellow-red. Palms warm. No lattice. Target protocol active. I cannot explain all details yet" Silence. Then Hana, very softly.
"Alive first" Ren's throat closed.
"Yes" Daichi said "Explain later" Ren pressed the phone harder to his ear.
"Yes" Hana breathed.
"Come home angry if you have to" His eyes burned.
"I remember" Daichi said "Route back counts""I remember" Kurose lifted one finger. One minute. Ren forced the next words out before the line became only crying.
"Shinso is alive" Hana made another sound.
"Good. Tell him soup is still not a contract" Across the transport, Shinso's face changed. Ren repeated it.
"Hana says soup is still not a contract" Shinso looked down.
"Tell her I know" Ren did. Daichi said "Bentaro status red but functional" Ren almost laughed. It broke instead. A small cracked sound. Hana heard.
"Good. Sound alive""I am" Kurose lifted her hand. Time. Ren swallowed.
"I have to go" Hana's voice sharpened with everything she was not allowed to demand.
"Stay visible" The words hit.
"Yes" Daichi said "Hands open if needed" Ren looked at his palms.
"Yes" Hana said "We love you. Not because you were useful" The transport blurred. Ren answered because he had to.
"I know" The call ended. He held the phone one second too long before handing it back. Kurose took it without comment. Shinso looked at the floor.
"Soup is not a contract?" Ren nodded.
"She said it""Good" His voice was rough. Very rough. The convoy kept moving. Behind them, higher in the mountains, the lodge remained under investigation. Outside the perimeter, police and pros searched routes that had already lost their cleanest tracks. Somewhere beyond their reach, a woman who could find people had been made into an absence small enough to carry. Farther away, in a room that smelled of antiseptic and old secrets, a message arrived. Primary public target not secured.
Secondary structural-response subject not secured. Search asset secured. Object-contact method exposed. Shelter protocol adapted faster than projected. Garaki read the report without irritation. Irritation was for wasted data. This was not waste. He studied the line about the structural-response subject. High heat response. No activation. No capture. Repeated target-protocol compliance. Hazard inference under stress. Social anchors strong. Medical supervision high. Capture difficulty elevated.
His eyes brightened behind the lenses.
"Not broken by fear" he murmured On the next line, the operative had written: Subject remained in place despite repeated movement pressure. Garaki smiled faintly.
"Interesting" Someone behind him asked a question in a voice too calm to be anyone ordinary.
"And the search Quirk?"
"Acquired in principle" Garaki said "Processing will take time""And the boy?" Garaki looked again at Ren's file.
"Still moving within their structure" The room was silent for a moment. Then the calm voice said "Structures can be made to move" Garaki closed the report.
"Yes" The convoy descended toward U. A.' s secured medical intake. Ren did not know about the report. He knew only the smell of smoke in the transport, the warmth fading from his palms, Shinso breathing across from him, Kurose counting silently with her eyes, and the truth that both lines remained. No student confirmed captured. Ragdoll taken. He had not run. He had not been taken. He had not saved her. All three facts sat inside him without merging.
When the transport turned onto the secured road, Ren opened his chart at last. His hand shook less now. He wrote: Evacuation began after lodge compromise. No unknown object contact. Ragdoll still missing. No student confirmed captured. Bakugo alive and evacuated separately. Midoriya alive, critical injuries. Kota alive. I am under target protocol. Parents notified alive. No Scar Tissue activation. No movement beyond assigned route. He paused. Then wrote the line that hurt most because it was honest.
Survival did not close the count. Shinso read it upside down from across the transport. His eyes stayed on the page for a long moment. Then he said "Good" Ren looked at him. The word was not praise. Not comfort. A marker. A small piece of route in the smoke. Ren nodded. Outside, the mountain road curved away from the forest. The count came with them.
