Chương 130: Ragdoll Without Search

Ragdoll woke to the wrong kind of quiet. Hospitals were never quiet. Even when people tried, hospitals made sounds because bodies were terrible at privacy. Monitors breathed in beeps. Air systems hummed. Rubber soles moved over polished floors. Curtains whispered. Plastic tubes shifted when someone turned. Distant voices lowered themselves and failed. Machines clicked as if counting the ways a person had not died yet. Ragdoll heard all of that. She still woke to quiet. Not silence in her ears.
Silence where Search should have been. The absence opened before her eyes did. No points. No names. No living map at the back of her mind. No soft pull of people in range. No automatic sense of where Mandalay was even when walls stood between them. No little pressure of Pixie-Bob's presence burning bright and impatient. No Tiger, solid and sharp-edged and dependable. No distant staff. No patients. No hidden life beyond sight. Nothing. Ragdoll's eyes flew open. Her body tried to move.
The medical restraints were not restraints, technically. Supports. Safety straps. Soft limits meant to stop panic from tearing lines loose. The body did not care about technically. She jerked against them. A monitor shrieked. Mandalay was there before the first alarm finished.
"Here" Ragdoll stared at her. It took a heartbeat too long to find her. Sight had to do the work now. Hair. face. eyes. tears she had not let fall yet. Mandalay's hand hovering above the blanket, not touching because medical staff had said no sudden touch if Ragdoll woke disoriented. Ragdoll gasped.
"Manda""Yes. Here""I can't—""I know""No" Mandalay's face tightened.
"I know""No no no" Pixie-Bob stumbled up from the chair, one hand covering her mouth. Tiger appeared at the foot of the bed, broad and still, his eyes wet enough to be terrifying. Ragdoll tried again. Search. Nothing. She reached for the shape of Mandalay and found only Mandalay's face because her eyes were pointed there. She reached for Pixie-Bob and found blur at the edge of vision. She reached for Tiger and found the blanket moving with her own breath. Nothing beyond what the body could see.
Nothing beyond what anyone else would have. The panic became animal.
"I can't find you" Mandalay leaned closer.
"You do not have to find us to have us" Ragdoll sobbed once. The sound hurt her throat.
"I can't find you""We are here""I can't—""Here" Mandalay repeated "I am here. Pixie is here. Tiger is here. The room is here. Your body is here. You do not have to find us to have us" The words were not enough. Words were never enough the first time they tried to stand where a Quirk had been. Ragdoll knew that even while breaking under them. She had helped people after Quirk injuries before. She had read reports. Heard doctors talk. Watched heroes lose function, output, precision, range.
Search had told her where they were, who was hiding pain, who was about to bolt, who needed gentleness before touch. Now Search told her nothing. Because Search was not there. The monitor kept screaming until a nurse came in and silenced it with efficient hands and red eyes. Ragdoll did not know the nurse's name. Search would have known the nurse was there before the door opened. Search would have whispered location without words. Search would have made the room less blind. She shook. Mandalay's hand hovered.
"Touch?" Ragdoll stared at her. Consent. Still available. Something in the ruin caught on that. She nodded. Mandalay's hand settled over hers. Warm. Real. Only where it touched. Ragdoll gripped hard enough that the nurse moved in concern, but Mandalay shook her head once.
"Let her" Ragdoll closed her eyes and tried to find Mandalay through the hand. Skin. pressure. warmth. pulse. Not Search. Not enough. Enough for one breath. Tiger's voice was low.
"Breathe with the hand" Ragdoll tried. Pixie-Bob's voice came broken from the other side.
"You're here, kitten" Ragdoll made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost grief.
"That nickname is terrible" Pixie-Bob cried harder.
"Still yours" Still yours. The words entered the room like something fragile carried in both hands. Ragdoll opened her eyes again. Mandalay was there. Not because Search said so. Because Mandalay stayed where Ragdoll could see. Alive first. That was the rule they had used for Ren. Now it belonged here too. Alive first. The missing came after and refused to be smaller. By midmorning, U. A. had created a new category of room. The label said Extended Quirk Trauma Observation.
Recovery Girl saw it once and told the person who printed it to try again before she used the sign as a diagnostic tool for institutional stupidity. The second label said Ragdoll Recovery Suite. Recovery Girl allowed that one because it said who before what. The room had a glass panel Ragdoll could cover from inside, line-of-sight seating, low lighting, and no sudden entry unless medically necessary.
The Pussycats occupied it in shifts and failed the concept of shifts almost immediately because no one wanted to leave. Eventually, Mandalay negotiated with medical staff like a hostage specialist arguing with a cliff. One at bedside. One at side wall. One resting in attached room. No crowding. No sudden touch. No Search language unless Ragdoll used it first. No asking what she could sense. No saying at least. Tiger wrote that one on the whiteboard in block letters. NO AT LEAST Pixie-Bob added under it.
NO BRIGHT SIDE WITHOUT PERMISSION Mandalay added third. ALIVE FIRST DOES NOT MEAN ONLY ALIVE Ragdoll looked at the whiteboard when she woke the fourth time. Her throat moved.
"Good board" Pixie-Bob sobbed again. Tiger looked away. Mandalay smiled in the careful way people smiled when any softness might crack too hard.
"We learned from a room on probation" Ragdoll's brow furrowed.
"What?" Mandalay glanced at Tiger. Tiger nodded once. Mandalay sat beside the bed.
"There is a student. Ren Akiyama" The name touched the edge of memory. Camp. U. A. Lists. A boy who stayed. A target. A missing child. Kamino reports half-heard through sedation. Ragdoll closed her eyes.
"Scar kid?" Pixie-Bob made a strangled sound. Tiger said "We are improving language" Ragdoll opened one eye.
"I am injured, not polite" Mandalay's mouth trembled.
"He might accept that" Ragdoll stared at the ceiling. Ren Akiyama. The name sat alone. Search did not help. She had to remember manually now. Manual memory felt like digging with spoons.
"They took me""Yes""They took him too?" Mandalay's hand tightened on the blanket.
"Before Kamino. Garaki's people. He was rescued" Ragdoll turned her head slowly.
"Alive?"
"Yes""Same as me""Alive first" Ragdoll closed her eyes.
"What did they take?" The room went quiet. Not because they did not know. Because the answer had teeth. Tiger said "From him, they did not take the same way" Ragdoll opened her eyes. Mandalay's voice was careful.
"They forced graft-derived Quirk functions into his body. He integrated them yesterday under medical crisis" Ragdoll stared.
"They added""Yes" Her breath shook.
"They took from me and added to him" Pixie-Bob whispered "Ragdoll" Ragdoll looked at the whiteboard. NO BRIGHT SIDE WITHOUT PERMISSION Good. Good board. She said "That is not opposite" Mandalay's eyes filled.
"No""It is the same hand" Tiger's voice was rough.
"Yes" Ragdoll closed her eyes. The same hand. Taking. Adding. Editing. Her body shook once. This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version. Mandalay moved.
"Touch?" Ragdoll nodded. The hand returned. Warm. Here. Not enough. Enough.
"Does he know?" Ragdoll asked"That you are alive?"
"Yes. He asked" Ragdoll's mouth moved.
"Good kid" Mandalay smiled badly.
"Very irritatingly good""Does he know about Search?"
"Initial status, likely. Carefully" Ragdoll stared at the ceiling. She did not want to be careful. She wanted to scream until Search came back from wherever All For One had put it or broken it or swallowed it into whatever impossible machinery villains used to make bodies into storage. She wanted to ask where everyone was and have the world answer. She wanted to sleep and wake before it happened. She wanted Mandalay to stop looking like the room had moved three inches away from the universe.
She wanted to not be a lesson. She said "Can I talk to him?" Mandalay went still. Pixie-Bob's head snapped up. Tiger looked at the monitor. Ragdoll closed her eyes.
"Not now maybe" Mandalay's voice was soft.
"Why?" Ragdoll swallowed. The answer was not noble. Good. She was tired of noble.
"Because if I say they took something from me to someone who still has everything, I will hate them for breathing wrong" The room went silent. Ragdoll continued "He might breathe wrong too" Mandalay's thumb moved gently over her hand.
"Yes""But maybe he knows the room after" Tiger nodded slowly.
"He might" Ragdoll looked at the whiteboard again. ALIVE FIRST DOES NOT MEAN ONLY ALIVE"Ask" she said Mandalay squeezed her hand.
"I will ask" Not tell him. Not arrange him. Ask. Good. Consent remained a tiny cruel miracle. In R-2, Ren received the request after lunch. Lunch was an overstatement. Lunch was a protein drink, broth, soft rice, and a banana someone had cut into medically harmless pieces as if fruit might become heroic if left whole. Ren had objected to the banana segmentation. Recovery Girl had told him to survive adulthood before challenging fruit policy.
He was in his chair at twelve degrees, left wrist wrapped, right shoulder taped, Graft Lattice quiet but more present than he liked. Pale traces appeared when his heart rate climbed. They were visible now around old stress points like the body had been annotated in a language he had not chosen but was learning to read. Kurose entered with Aizawa. That pairing now meant significant information or bureaucratic danger. Ren put the protein drink down.
"No" Kurose lifted an eyebrow.
"You do not know what it is""That has not historically protected me" Aizawa said "Accurate but unhelpful" Recovery Girl looked at the monitor.
"Ask" Kurose sat near the bed.
"Ragdoll is awake intermittently" Ren went still. Hana looked up from the chair by the window. Daichi closed his notebook. Ren said "Alive""Yes""Search?" Kurose's face tightened.
"Functionally absent in initial assessment" Ren's left fingers curled. The gate at his wrist flickered. He felt it.
"Stop" The pale line narrowed. Pain stayed. Everyone waited. Ren breathed.
"Functionally absent" Aizawa said "Stolen is the working assumption" Ren looked at him.
"By All For One""Yes" The room shifted. All For One captured. Garaki gone. Search stolen. Grafts integrated. The battlefield had become bodies. Kurose continued "Ragdoll asked if she could speak with you. No obligation. No expectation. No today if you do not want it. No live call if you prefer written exchange. No explanation required" Ren looked at his wrist.
"Why?" Kurose answered honestly.
"She said if she says they took something from her to someone who still has everything, she may hate them for breathing wrong. She thought you might know the room after" Hana covered her mouth. Daichi looked down. Recovery Girl's face went sharp with grief. Ren closed his eyes. The room after. Not the lab. Not the rescue. After. Where alive became too small and too necessary. Where people looked relieved and you wanted to punish them for being right. Where a body remained but the old map did not.
He opened his eyes.
"Yes" Recovery Girl said "Conditions""Short""Yes""Screened""Yes""No medical details unless volunteered""Yes""No comfort lies" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good""No bright side" Aizawa said "Already on their board" Ren blinked.
"They have board?" Kurose's mouth twitched.
"Good board" Ren breathed.
"Then yes" Hana stepped closer.
"Do you want us here?" The question mattered. Ren looked at the blank screen. Ragdoll had lost the thing that found people beyond sight. Ren had people around him so often now that sometimes the room felt like care with walls. Both were true.
"Yes" Daichi nodded.
"Here" Kurose sent the approval. The call was audio first. That was Ragdoll's choice. Not seeing at first meant she did not have to be seen trying to replace Search with sight. Ren respected that immediately. The secured speaker on R-2's desk clicked once. Mandalay's voice came first.
"Audio connected. Ragdoll, Ren is present. Hana, Daichi, Recovery Girl, Kurose, and Aizawa are in the room. Ren, Ragdoll has Mandalay, Pixie-Bob, Tiger, and medical staff nearby" Ragdoll's voice came after a pause.
"Sounds crowded" Ren looked at the adults around him.
"Yes""Yours too?"
"Yes""Good or bad?" Ren considered.
"Both" A breath on the other end.
"Good answer" Ren's left hand rested on the blanket. Pain present. He did not know what to say next. That helped. If he had known, it would probably have been wrong. Ragdoll spoke first.
"They took Search" No one softened it. No one interrupted. Ren said "I heard""It is gone" Ren's throat tightened.
"I am sorry" The room went still. Ragdoll's voice sharpened, not cruelly.
"Is that automatic?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes""Try again" He breathed. No sorry before alive. No apology that makes the injured person manage your guilt. He opened his eyes.
"They took something that was yours" Silence. Then Ragdoll breathed.
"Better" Ren nodded even though she could not see.
"They put things in you""Yes""Are they yours?" Ren looked at his left wrist. The pale line under the bandage was quiet.
"No" A pause.
"Are they in you?"
"Yes""Do they work?" His mouth tightened.
"Yes" Ragdoll made a sound. Not anger. Not only.
"Mine worked too" Ren closed his eyes. The sentence was worse because it was simple. Search had worked. Pain Modulation worked. Repair Scaffold worked. Function was not morality. Useful was not wanted. Ragdoll said "I keep reaching for people" Ren opened his eyes.
"And?"
"And nothing answers" Ren's hand curled. Gate flicker. Stop. Pain stayed. He said "After the lab, I kept waiting for pain to tell me where my body was. Sometimes it did not. Sometimes the things they added answered before I asked" Ragdoll was quiet. Ren continued "It felt like my body had new rooms and some of the doors had other people's handwriting" Hana's eyes filled. Daichi looked at the floor.
On the other end, Ragdoll whispered "Yes" Ren did not know if that yes meant she understood or only needed something to stand on. Both counted. Ragdoll said "Search was not a room. It was windows" Ren closed his eyes. Manual memory. Sight. Walls. People no longer where her Quirk should place them.
"Now?"
"Now the house has walls I did not know were walls" The speaker carried the sound of someone crying quietly. Maybe Pixie-Bob. Maybe Mandalay. Maybe both. Ragdoll's voice shook but stayed.
"They took my windows" Ren swallowed.
"They added doors to me""Without permission""Yes" Ragdoll breathed.
"They like editing" The word entered both rooms. Editing. Not injury alone. Not theft alone. Not modification. Editing. Someone else deciding what stayed in a person, what left, what could be used, what counted as success, what made a body valuable. Ragdoll said "They took something from me" Ren answered "They put something in me""Somehow both feel like being edited""Without permission" Ragdoll exhaled.
"Yeah" The rooms held that. Not as solution. As shared floor. Tiger's voice came faintly from the other end.
"Good word" Ragdoll said "Bad word" Tiger answered "Useful word" Ragdoll said "Dangerous word" Ren almost smiled.
"Common problem" A small laugh came from Ragdoll. It cracked at the edges. Still counted. Ren looked toward Kurose. She nodded once. Time still okay. Ragdoll said "Do they keep saying alive first?"
"Yes""Do you hate it?"
"Yes""Me too" Ren breathed.
"But?"
"But alive first is not wrong. It is just too small if they stop there" Ragdoll was quiet. Then she said "Our board says that""Good board""I heard your room is on probation""It earned that""My room is suspicious""Probably wise" Ragdoll made the cracked laugh again. Mandalay's voice came softly.
"Still okay?" Ragdoll answered "Yes" Ren waited. The waiting mattered. Ragdoll asked "Does it feel like betrayal when it helps?" Ren's chest hurt. Not from ribs.
"Yes" The answer was immediate and ugly. He let it be ugly.
"When Pain Modulation stays local, I can move better. When Repair Scaffold works, I recover faster. Graft Lattice makes them follow rules. Yesterday I stabilized a rescue dummy and stopped before collapse""That sounds good""Yes""And?"
"I hated that I wanted it to work" The speaker was silent. Then Ragdoll said "Good" Ren's eyes burned.
"Good?"
"If you only hated it, they took the future too. If you only wanted it, they took the past too" The sentence hit so hard the monitor noticed. Recovery Girl moved. Ren lifted his left hand slightly.
"Map okay" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed but she did not interrupt. Ragdoll continued "Both means something in you is still arguing" Ren swallowed.
"Argument as survival""Sometimes" Ren looked down.
"Search?" Ragdoll's breath caught.
"Careful""Yes""What is the question?" Ren thought. Not can you get it back. Not how useful was it. Not what did it feel like.
"Do you want people to talk about it?" The other room went very still. Ragdoll's voice changed.
"I do not know""Then they should ask each time" A breath.
"Yes" Ren said "Some days talking about the grafts helps me put walls around them. Some days it makes the walls thinner" Ragdoll whispered "Windows" Ren corrected softly "Windows" She breathed.
"Some days talking about Search might help me remember the windows were mine. Some days it might make the walls louder" Ren nodded.
"Then ask each time" Mandalay's voice came low and fierce.
"We will" Ragdoll was quiet for a long time. Then she asked "Can I see you?" Recovery Girl looked at Ren's monitor. Kurose looked at Ren. Hana's hand hovered. Daichi waited. Ren breathed.
"Yes" The audio shifted. The screen turned on. Ragdoll appeared in a medical bed, hair messier than any official photo would ever dare show, face pale, eyes tired and too wide because sight had become work. Mandalay sat beside her with one hand in hers. Pixie-Bob stood behind the chair, eyes red. Tiger stood at the foot of the bed like a mountain trying not to block the sun. Ragdoll looked at the screen. Her eyes moved over the room manually. Ren could see her doing it. Counting. Not with Search. With sight.
He sat still and let her.
"Ren" Mandalay said gently Ragdoll's eyes found him. There. A pale boy in a medical chair. Bandaged wrist. taped shoulder. blanket. tired face. faint lines under skin where old scars and new rules had learned each other. Ragdoll stared at the lines around his wrist. Ren did not hide them. She whispered "They show""Sometimes""Mine does not" Ren's throat tightened.
"I know" Ragdoll looked at him sharply. Not angry. Testing. Ren corrected himself.
"I know that is different" She held his gaze. Then nodded.
"Yes" Different mattered. Parallels were not sameness. Ragdoll looked around R-2.
"Your signs are better" Ren turned his head toward the wall.
"Room has history""I want signs" Pixie-Bob immediately grabbed a marker. Tiger said "Not now" Ragdoll looked at him.
"Now" Tiger looked at Mandalay. Mandalay looked at Ragdoll. Then at the whiteboard.
"What sign?" Ragdoll stared at Ren's wall. Then said "Search was mine before it was useful" The room froze. Pixie-Bob wrote it with shaking hands. SEARCH WAS MINE BEFORE IT WAS USEFUL Ragdoll watched every letter appear. Sight only. Enough. Her face crumpled. Mandalay held her hand. Ren looked at the words on the screen.
"They are good signs" Ragdoll nodded.
"What sign do you need?" Ren looked at his wall. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost. Not a storage closet pending. Student. Return with a body map. Useful is not wanted. The name is not the owner. He swallowed.
"The grafts follow rules. I choose meaning" Kurose's breath caught. Recovery Girl looked away. Hana's fingers pressed against her own mouth. Daichi closed his eyes. Ragdoll stared at him through the screen.
"Good" Ren's voice was rough.
"Not good good""Good dangerous distinction" He almost laughed.
"Everyone steals my lines" Ragdoll's mouth curved faintly.
"Hero society is built on theft, kitten" Tiger said "Ragdoll""What? I am traumatized and insightful" Pixie-Bob sobbed and laughed at the same time. Mandalay bent over Ragdoll's hand. Ren let himself smile a little. The ribs allowed it. Mercy. The call ended before either room became a collapse. Recovery Girl cut it after mutual agreement, because ending before harm was a rule now and rules mattered most when everyone wanted one more minute. The screen went dark. Ren looked at the place where Ragdoll had been.
His chest hurt. His wrist hurt. Pain present. The room stayed. Kurose folded her arms.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. chair. screen dark. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. Kurose. Aizawa. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. sad. okay. not alone in edited" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Acceptable" Hana touched his hair. Daichi looked at the wall.
"The grafts follow rules. I choose meaning" Ren opened his eyes.
"Maybe too long for sign" Daichi's face became serious.
"Bentaro supports large signage" Recovery Girl said "Bentaro is not on the committee" Kurose was already writing.
"Too late" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Good condition""For Hero Course?"
"For everything" Ren looked down at the wrist. The pale line flickered once. No gate. No spread. Just present.
"The grafts follow rules" he whispered Hana finished "You choose meaning" He breathed.
"Yes" In Ragdoll's recovery suite, Pixie-Bob had made three new signs before Tiger confiscated the marker for emotional escalation. SEARCH WAS MINE BEFORE IT WAS USEFUL NO WINDOWS WITHOUT PERMISSION ASK EACH TIME Ragdoll looked at the last one the longest. Ask each time. It was such a small sentence for such an enormous absence. Small did not mean weak. Mandalay squeezed her hand.
"Talk about it?" Ragdoll stared at the sign.
"Not now" Mandalay nodded.
"Okay" No disappointment. No relief performed too loudly. Just okay. Ragdoll breathed. The room remained blind in ways it had never been blind before. But Mandalay was there because Ragdoll could see her. Pixie-Bob was there because she was sniffling too loudly by the marker tray. Tiger was there because the floor creaked under his weight when he shifted. Medical staff were beyond the door because someone had told her, not because Search said so. The world had become smaller. Not safe. Not right. Smaller.
But the room had signs now. That gave the smaller world handles. Ragdoll closed her eyes. Search did not answer. Mandalay's hand stayed. Here by touch. Here by voice. Here by people choosing to stay where sight could find them. It was not enough. It was the beginning of enough. That evening, Nezu received two updated recovery-room language protocols. One from R-2. One from Ragdoll's suite. He read them both in silence.
Then he opened a new document labeled STUDENT AND HERO QUIRK VIOLATION RECOVERY LANGUAGE GUIDELINES and immediately closed it because the title sounded like an institution trying to digest grief into policy too quickly. He opened another document. First line: People before functions. Better. Not enough. Enough to begin. He added the second line. Consent must survive usefulness. Then the third. Alive first does not mean only alive. He paused before the fourth. No bright side without permission. He smiled faintly.
That one, he suspected, had Ragdoll's teeth in it. Good. Institutions needed teeth in the right places. In R-2, Ren slept under a new temporary paper sign taped beside the others. THE GRAFTS FOLLOW RULESI CHOOSE MEANING The handwriting was Kurose's. The spacing was Daichi's. The corner had a tiny terrible cat drawn by Hana because she claimed the sign needed imperfection to avoid becoming official. Recovery Girl had objected to the cat. Then allowed it because Ren fell asleep looking at it.
On the medical monitor, his heart rate settled. Pain stayed present. Graft Lattice quieted. The room remained on probation. So did the world. But somewhere down the medical wing, another room had signs now. Search was gone. Ragdoll was not. The grafts were in Ren. Garaki did not own the meaning. All For One had taken and added and edited and called it power. The rooms answered differently. Ask. Stop. Stay. Choose. Here.
