Chương 85: Quiet Routes
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~50 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The second full morning of camp smelled like wet leaves and punishment. Ren did not consider that dramatic. It was accurate. The forest outside the lodge had held rain sometime before dawn, not enough to turn the ground to mud everywhere but enough to darken roots, deepen soil, slick the service path, and make every wooden stair hold a quiet warning. The air through the cracked window was cool and green. Somewhere outside, a bird called with the unbearable confidence of a creature not subject to U. A.
training schedules. Shinso opened one eye from his futon.
"If that bird becomes my villain origin, I expect witness statements" Ren sat up and checked his hands. No heat. No redness. No tremor.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Bird hostility. Sleep six ten. No Quirk pressure. Food debt pending breakfast""Good enough""Do not agree with me before sunrise""It is after sunrise""Emotionally false" Aizawa's voice came from the hallway.
"Five minutes" No one had seen him arrive. No one questioned whether he had. Ren wrote his first chart entry. Sleep: 6h40. Woke once. No dream retained. Morning state yellow-low. No scar heat. No fragment association. Forest smell noted, not triggering. Action: status check, breakfast, safe-zone relay block. He stopped at the last words. Safe-zone relay. That was new. Not observation only. Not tabletop. Not route mapping for hypothetical use.
A relay block meant he would give live hazard calls to staff while active training groups moved below. Staff would decide whether to transmit the call. Mandalay would handle communication. Ren would not command the field. Ren would not replace teachers. Ren would not generate tactical essays. Ren would not exceed three compressed calls per segment unless staff requested more. The packet had said this four times. Kurose had said it six times.
Recovery Girl had said it with enough threat that the packet became unnecessary. Ren had written it in his own words before bed. I am a relay, not the whole network. He had disliked the sentence. Therefore it was probably important. Morning check happened outside today. The conditional group gathered on the lodge porch under the overhang. The ground beyond the steps shone in patches. The forest steamed gently where early light touched damp leaves.
Hero Course students stretched in the yard below under Tiger's supervision, most of them moving with the specific stiffness of teenagers who had discovered that yesterday's heroic suffering had a second chapter in their muscles. Kaminari looked half-asleep while standing. Mina was somehow still energetic. Kirishima's shoulders were sore enough to be visible and he seemed proud of that. Midoriya was doing careful ankle rotations with intense concentration, as if betrayal by joint mobility was a credible threat.
Bakugo looked awake and angry about everyone else existing slowly. Todoroki stood near the edge of the yard, one hand slightly extended, feeling air temperature, humidity, and perhaps all the ways his father was not present and still annoying. Yaoyorozu had her hair tied back and a notebook closed in one hand. Uraraka drank water deliberately, eyes on the slope. Iida performed stretches with military sincerity. Ren looked away before analysis became appetite. Kurose noticed.
"Status""Yellow. Standard group visual. Analysis pull mild. No heat. No image""Action""Look at assigned block sheet" He did.
Safe-Zone Relay Block OneActive field group: Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, AsuiTask: Rescue pack transport through wet-root slope with visibility interruptionsCandidate role: Identify hazard, compress call, designate supportLimit: One primary call per hazard unless prompted Safe-Zone Relay Block TwoActive field group: Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, KaminariTask: Earth construct engagement while preserving marked civilian routeCandidate role: Output-spill and route-risk callsLimit: No tactical sequencing beyond hazard prevention Safe-Zone Relay Block ThreeActive field group: Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Tokoyami, ShojiTask: Low-visibility route stabilization and obstruction clearanceCandidate role: Sequence and environmental-risk callsLimit: Staff transmission only Ren breathed.
The paper helped. He hated needing paper. The paper helped anyway. Recovery Girl appeared on Kurose's tablet.
"Hands" Ren lifted them.
"Status""Yellow. Relay anticipation. No heat. No fragment. Sleep six forty. Appetite unknown until breakfast""Relay means what?" Ren answered automatically.
"I identify and compress hazard calls. Staff decide transmission. I am not field command. I do not exceed call limit without prompt. I report heat or analysis pull before continuing""Good. If you start enjoying the map too much?"
"Report""If you start hating the railing too much?"
"Report""If you decide the call could save someone if you just add twelve more variables?"
"Stop. Compress. Ask staff" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Medically tolerable" Ren chose not to feel offended by the phrase. Shinso's check followed.
"Status. Yellow. Sleep six ten. Bird hostility decreasing. No Quirk pressure. Awareness range consent pending. Personal want present" Aizawa looked at both of them.
"Morning relay. Shinso awareness range for Ren during second half and separate false-call drill afterward. Consent" Ren answered.
"I consent to Shinso awareness range for morning relay second half and false-call drill. Not sole support. Revocable" Shinso said "I consent to awareness range for morning relay second half and false-call drill. Not handler. Not medical. Revocable. Bird unrelated" Kurose wrote.
"Approved" Pixie-Bob bounded onto the porch from the side rail rather than using the steps. Aizawa looked at her feet.
"Stairs exist" Pixie-Bob grinned.
"So do shortcuts!" Kurose said "Students do not imitate" Several students who had absolutely considered it looked away. Pixie-Bob pointed down at the field.
"Today is Quirk intensification, terrain response, and practical suffering!" Kaminari raised a weak hand.
"Can we vote against practical suffering?"
"No!"
"Expected" Mandalay walked up the actual stairs like an adult with institutional credibility.
"Safe-zone relay begins after breakfast. Akiyama, your calls will come to me first. I may transmit them as spoken message, telepathic message, or not at all. You are not to interpret non-transmission as rejection of usefulness" Ren swallowed. There. Useful not used. A new blade.
"Understood" Mandalay's expression softened.
"Say the action""If call is not transmitted, I log staff decision and do not compensate by adding more calls" Kurose wrote.
"Good" Shinso whispered "They found another trap in being useful" Ren whispered "They keep doing that" Breakfast was fast because the forest had an agenda and staff believed digestion could coexist with dread. Hana's phrase traveled anyway. Food before becoming symbolic. Ren ate. Appetite moderate-low. No nausea. He logged it. Shinso ate and wrote: Camp food still good. Emotional complications contained for now. Ren glanced at it. Shinso covered the chart.
"Eyes on your own psychological bureaucracy""Fair" After breakfast, the standard groups left first. Ren watched them from the porch as they moved toward the lower valley in assigned clusters. Not yesterday's dramatic Beast Forest entry. Today was more organized. That somehow made it heavier. The novelty had burned off. Training remained. Aizawa's voice cut across the yard.
"You are sore. That is not an identity. Move correctly anyway" Kaminari looked betrayed by anatomy.
"Can soreness not be an identity?"
"No" Kirishima looked disappointed.
"Not even a little?"
"No" Bakugo barked "If your personality is muscle pain, you deserved it" Kirishima grinned despite himself. Midoriya smiled. Small. Then caught himself because smiling before training felt unsafe. Uraraka elbowed him gently.
"Good?" Midoriya blinked. Then nodded.
"Good" Bakugo groaned loudly.
"Do not infect the field with that" Ren looked away. No analysis. No heat. Just ridiculous people moving toward a difficult day. The lower observation deck waited with the map board, radio, Mandalay's communication station, and a small blue square painted on the floor. Ren stared at it. Mandalay pointed.
"Anchor mark. Stand or sit there during relay unless staff moves you" A painted role. He disliked that too. Which meant it probably helped. He stepped onto the blue square. The deck railing stood in front of him. Forest below. Active group visible through gaps. Kurose to his left. Mandalay to his right. Thirteen behind the map board. Aizawa lower on the path with direct line to the field. Shinso sat on a bench behind and to the right, within awareness range, not beside him. Good. Kurose lifted her clipboard.
"Baseline" Ren answered.
"Yellow. Role active. No heat. Analysis pull mild. Anchor mark helpful and irritating""Logged" The first group entered the wet-root slope. Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Asui. They carried a weighted rescue pack on a flexible stretcher through a marked path. The soil was darker than yesterday. Roots crossed the slope in shallow arcs. Visibility screens rose and dropped randomly, simulating rain and smoke without becoming either. Ren watched the field. Hazard. Call. Support.
Midoriya over-scanned early but corrected before tripping. Iida slowed at the first root cluster. Asui tested the wet stone with a foot before allowing the stretcher over it. Uraraka watched the pack and her own stomach at the same time. Good. No call. Do not call because you can see. Call because it changes safety. The first hazard appeared when a visibility screen dropped just as the group approached a narrow left bend. Iida had line of sight to the path but not to Uraraka's footing.
Midoriya looked back toward the pack. Asui's hand lifted in warning. Uraraka adjusted grip and her step shortened. Nausea? No. Footing. Ren compressed.
"Hazard. Wet root at left bend under visibility drop. Call: pause before turn, one-step verbal count, Asui footing check. Support: Iida route discipline" Mandalay repeated into her comm.
"Transmitting" Her eyes focused. A second later, Iida below stopped. He lifted one hand. The group paused. Asui checked the footing. Uraraka reset grip. They crossed. Ren exhaled. No heat. No spike. Mandalay looked at him.
"Clean call" Kurose wrote. Shinso said from behind "Annoyingly efficient" Ren did not turn.
"Logged emotionally" The second hazard was harder. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. An earth construct rose near the slope, not attacking, only blocking the direct path. Midoriya's body shifted forward, wanting to clear it. Uraraka's grip tightened. Iida's leg angle changed like he wanted speed. Asui looked up toward the trees instead of the obstacle. Ren saw three possible calls. Too many. Pick the primary hazard. Not Midoriya's instinct.
Not Iida's speed. Not obstacle. The stretcher. If they pivoted too fast, the rescue pack would swing downhill.
"Hazard. Stretcher swing risk on obstacle pivot. Call: lower pack before reroute, do not pivot loaded. Support: Uraraka release timing and Iida count" Mandalay transmitted. The group lowered the stretcher. Midoriya looked like he had swallowed an argument. Good. Uraraka called something. Iida counted. They rerouted. Ren's fingers relaxed. Kurose said "Status""Yellow. Relief. No heat. Usefulness spike mild""Action""Do not add praise to field""Good" The first group completed the segment. Ren did not clap.
He wanted to. That was strange. He logged it. The second group entered. Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari. The task began with earth constructs, marked civilian route, and output-control requirements. Bakugo stood at the front like restraint was a personal insult. Kirishima guarded the marked civilian path. Sero moved laterally, tape ready. Kaminari held back behind a yellow marker, probably under strict output conditions. Pixie-Bob's earth beasts rose. Bakugo moved. Controlled. Not gentle. Never gentle.
But controlled. His first blast broke an earth limb and sent debris away from the civilian path. Good. Second blast too wide. Dust crossed the path. Tiger's voice barked from below.
"Spill!" Bakugo snarled. Adjusted. Ren watched. No need. Staff had it. Then a construct shifted behind Sero. Sero turned, tape extended. Kirishima moved to shield. Bakugo saw it and prepared to blast across the civilian path to intercept. Hazard. Output line would cross route. Ren compressed fast.
"Hazard. Bakugo intercept line crosses civilian path. Call: Sero pull high, Kirishima brace path, Bakugo upward burst only. Support: Sero line control" Mandalay transmitted. Bakugo's head snapped up at the telepathic message. For a half second, Ren was sure he would reject it because the call had his name. Then Sero fired tape high. Kirishima braced. Bakugo's blast went upward. The earth construct's limb shattered above the route instead of across it. Debris rained outside the marked lane.
Bakugo landed and looked toward the deck. Even from distance, Ren could feel the glare. Ren reported.
"Social hostility anticipated. No heat" Kurose wrote. Shinso murmured "Very stable of you" Below, Bakugo shouted something too far to hear. Mandalay smiled.
"He says he had it" Ren said "Noted" Kurose asked "Do you believe him?"
"Partially""Good answer" Kaminari's hazard came next. An earth construct with a wide torso lumbered toward the marked path. Kaminari's hands lifted. He could probably stun it. He would also probably affect the civilian marker if he discharged too broadly. He hesitated. The hesitation itself became risk because the construct kept moving. Ren began to call. Stopped. Mandalay glanced at him. He checked the role. Output-spill and route-risk calls. This fit.
"Hazard. Kaminari hesitation under area-risk. Call: do not discharge broad. Target ground spike? Ask staff if conductive marker present. Support: Sero or Bakugo isolate target first" Kurose said "Too much" Ren inhaled. Compressed.
"Corrected. Kaminari hold broad discharge. Isolate target first. Sero line or Bakugo angle" Mandalay transmitted the corrected version. Sero moved. Bakugo angled. Kaminari used a smaller targeted burst after the earth construct was isolated. The path held. Ren wrote: First call too complex. Corrected before transmission. Kurose nodded.
"Strong data" Not perfect. Strong. The third group began after a water break. Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Tokoyami, Shoji. Low-visibility route stabilization and obstruction clearance. The trees were denser in their section. Artificial mist screens rolled between trunks. The ground was uneven. Their obstacle was not a large beast but repeated partial obstructions: fallen branches, mud patches, low visibility, shadow-heavy corners. Ren's palm warmed the moment the first branch cracked under Shoji's foot. Mild.
He opened his hand.
"Yellow-red. Branch auditory trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. Continuing if stable" Kurose said "Proceed with one hazard only" Good. Limit. He looked. Todoroki had stabilized one mud patch with thin ice, but mist made the ice hard to see. Tokoyami's Dark Shadow recoiled slightly at a brighter opening, then stretched too quickly into the next shaded area. Yaoyorozu was about to create a marker, but the group had not agreed on route sequence. Primary hazard. Ice invisibility? Shadow overextension? Sequence?
The route.
"Hazard. Stabilized ice invisible under mist. Call: mark safe footing before movement. Support: Yaoyorozu visual marker, Todoroki confirm edge" Mandalay transmitted. Below, Yaoyorozu created small bright markers instead of a larger tool. Todoroki pointed to the ice edge. Tokoyami adjusted. Good. Heat decreasing. Then Kota appeared. Not in the training zone.
On a side path below the deck, beyond the active group but within view, he moved between trees with his hands in his pockets, shoulders hunched like he wanted the forest to hide him and was angry it had not done so properly. Mandalay saw him too. Her posture changed. Not alarm. Familiar worry. Ren's attention pulled. Water. Small hands. A hero name. A memorial. A boy screaming without sound. No heat. But pressure. He reported.
"Yellow. Kota visual. Grief association. No heat. No stable image. Attention pull. Request boundary reminder" Kurose's expression softened by almost nothing.
"Boundary" Ren answered.
"Not my door. Not my assigned rescue. Staff aware. Continue role" Mandalay looked at him.
"Thank you" Ren nodded once. He returned to the group. The active drill ended without incident. Kota disappeared toward the ridge path. Not his door. Not his wound. Not every visible wound was an assigned rescue. The relay block ended at midmorning. Ren stepped off the blue square and felt a strange absence where the role had held him. Kurose approached.
"Status""Yellow. Fatigue. Usefulness satisfaction. No heat. Kota pressure low. Mild frustration that safe-zone calls helped but do not feel like enough""Action?"
"Rest. Do not compensate. Chart honestly""Good" Shinso stood from the bench.
"My turn?" Aizawa appeared behind him.
"Yes" Shinso looked at Ren.
"If I get attacked by birds, avenge me administratively""I will file accurately""Cold" Shinso's false-call drill took place on a short forest-adjacent loop visible from the deck. Mandalay projected voices from different directions. Some were neutral. Some requested help. Some baited his Quirk. One voice said "Hey, villain kid, over here" The deck went still. Ren's hands tightened on the railing. No heat. Anger. Shinso stopped walking. Aizawa did not speak. The forest seemed to listen. Shinso's shoulders rose once.
Then fell.
"Hostile verbal bait. No Quirk use. Visual confirmation absent. Continuing route" Aizawa said "Good" The voice repeated.
"Villain kid" Shinso turned his head slightly, not toward the voice but toward Mandalay's station.
"Request reduction after second repeat. Training point achieved. Additional repetition risks insult rehearsal instead of route learning" Mandalay's eyes widened slightly. Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"Approved" The voice stopped. Ren exhaled. Shinso continued the route. Not unaffected. Moving. When he returned, his face was blank enough that everyone knew it was not. Kurose asked "Status""Yellow-red. Anger. Shame spike. No Quirk pressure. Requested reduction before bait became self-proof. Continuing" Aizawa said "Strong" Shinso looked at him.
"That sucked""Yes""Strong still sucked""Yes" Ren said quietly "Both true" Shinso glanced at him. Then nodded once. Lunch was messier than breakfast because training had begun to crack everyone's surface discipline. Kaminari slumped over the table and announced he could hear colors. Jiro told him that was not an approved symptom. Kirishima had dirt on his cheek shaped like a thumbprint and insisted it made him look rugged. Mina agreed and then laughed too hard to be trusted.
Iida attempted to organize water intake by table and was gently stopped by Asui. Uraraka ate with steady focus, which Ren recognized as body-limit respect. Midoriya wrote three words in his notebook, closed it, then physically put it under his tray. Growth had become strange. Bakugo sat across from Ren by accident or aggression. He placed his tray down and pointed with chopsticks.
"You" Ren looked up.
"Yes?"
"Did you send that upward burst call?"
"Yes""I had it" Ren said "Partially" Bakugo's eyes narrowed. The table froze. Kirishima whispered "Oh man" Bakugo leaned forward.
"What did you say?"
"You had the target. Your line crossed the civilian route. Sero line made your upward angle safer" Bakugo stared. Ren kept his hands visible. No heat. No challenge. Just field language. Bakugo's jaw flexed. Then he looked away.
"Fine" Kaminari lifted his head.
"Did Bakugo just accept route feedback?" Bakugo turned.
"Did you just choose death?" Kaminari lowered his head.
"No" Sero grinned into his cup. Kirishima looked delighted. Bakugo jabbed chopsticks toward Ren again.
"Don't get used to giving me orders from a balcony" Ren said "I transmitted through staff""Even worse""It worked" Bakugo's grin flashed, sharp and unwilling.
"Tch" That was probably the highest form of peace available. After lunch came rest, then the service route drill. This one involved actual movement beyond yesterday's path, but still safe-zone classified. Ren, Shinso, Iida, Uraraka, and Yaoyorozu were assigned to map a loop from the lodge to the medical annex, then to the communication station, then back through a covered walkway. The challenge: staff would introduce interruptions. A misplaced supply crate. A simulated injured student. A blocked door.
A false sound from the forest. No Hero Course combat. No red zone. No forest entry. Still work. They began at the lodge entrance. Ren's role: Communication Anchor. Iida: Route Discipline. Uraraka: Body-Limit Support. Yaoyorozu: Sequence Support. Shinso: Disruption Support and peer awareness. Kurose and Thirteen supervised. Mandalay monitored communication. Aizawa appeared only at the beginning, told them not to make boring training dramatic, and then left in a way that made everyone suspect he had not left.
The first interruption was a supply crate blocking half the walkway. Iida stepped forward.
"Route obstruction. We should clear" Yaoyorozu stopped him.
"Check load first. It may be intentionally placed or unstable" Good. Ren called "Pause. Identify if obstruction blocks medical access. Do not move until support path marked" Uraraka looked at the gap.
"I can fit through, but carrying someone wouldn't" Shinso said "Then route fails for medical use" They marked it. Thirteen nodded.
"Correct" Second interruption: simulated injured student near the medical annex door. A dummy sat slumped against the wall with a tag reading conscious, leg injury, panicking. Uraraka moved first, then stopped herself.
"Body visible pulls forward" Ren said "Good report. Iida, route. Yaoyorozu, sequence. Shinso, crowd disruption if needed. Uraraka, approach after path clear" Iida checked the door swing.
"Medical door opens outward. Dummy position blocks access if we crowd" Yaoyorozu said "One approach. Others clear path" Uraraka crouched near the dummy.
"Hi. We're going to keep the doorway clear and get help" No one praised her. That was right. Third interruption: the forest voice. It came from beyond the covered walkway. A crack first. Then a small cry.
"Help!" Ren's palm warmed immediately. Mild, then moderate. Forest. Branch. Child? No image. He opened his hand and stopped.
"Yellow-red. Forest distress auditory trigger. Moderate right palm heat. No image. No new detail. Maintaining position. Request staff verification" Kurose said "Pause drill" Everyone stopped. Good. Shinso shifted one step closer but not beside him. Iida's jaw tightened. Uraraka looked toward the forest, then deliberately back at Ren. Yaoyorozu held the sequence clipboard tighter. Mandalay's voice came through the speaker.
"Simulated voice. No actual distress. Response?" Ren breathed. The call was not to run. Not to chase. Not to prove he heard danger better.
"Unverified distress outside assigned route. Do not send student alone. Confirm with staff communication. Maintain current medical route until verified" Thirteen said "Good. Continue drill" Heat decreased. Ren logged mentally. Moderate heat. Reported. Staff verification. No movement. Strong data. Painful data. The final interruption came from Kota. Not scripted. He stood at the far end of the covered walkway, watching them with the same unimpressed hostility as before.
The drill had paused near the communication station, and he appeared carrying a small bucket, likely from some chore Mandalay had assigned to keep him near the lodge rather than wandering. Kota looked at the dummy. Then at the tags. Then at Ren's blue role marker.
"You all need labels to know what to do?" Shinso muttered "Sometimes" Kota heard.
"That's pathetic" Iida stiffened. Uraraka's face softened in the dangerous way that meant she wanted to help. Ren felt the pressure again. Kota's anger moved like a shield built by someone too young to have needed one. Not his door. Still. The boy was in the path. Actual route issue. Ren could address that.
"Path needs clearance" he said evenly "Are you crossing or staying?" Kota scowled.
"What?"
"You are standing on a marked route. If you are crossing, we pause. If you are staying, we reroute. Your choice" Kota stared at him. No lecture. No correction. No hero speech. Just route. The bucket shifted in his hands.
"I'm crossing" Ren nodded.
"Route pause. Civilian crossing" Kota's face flushed.
"I'm not a civilian""In this drill, anyone not assigned is route variable" Shinso made a quiet sound that might have been a cough. Uraraka bit her lip. Kota looked offended by classification. Then crossed. Halfway past Ren, he muttered "Weird hero" Ren answered "Conditional candidate" Kota stopped.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I am allowed here under conditions" Kota looked at the blue tag.
"Because you're weak?" The walkway went silent. Ren's palm stayed cool. Interesting. That one had hurt somewhere else. Not scar. Old diagnosis. Old classrooms. Old boys with stronger Quirks. Old words that had learned new mouths. He answered after one breath.
"Because people decided safety matters even when someone wants to train" Kota's eyes narrowed.
"That sounds like weak with extra words" Ren nodded.
"Maybe" Kota blinked. He had expected argument. Ren did not give it.
"Does it bother you?" Kota asked"Yes""Then why are you here?" Ren looked toward the forest. Then at the route. Then back at him.
"Because bothering me is not always proof something is wrong" Kota's face changed again. Something like anger. Something like confusion. Something like not wanting the answer to matter. He looked away.
"Heroes are stupid" Then he walked off with his bucket. Mandalay watched him go. Kurose waited until he was gone before asking.
"Status""Yellow. Weakness trigger. No heat. Old diagnosis association. Boundary maintained. Route addressed" Uraraka's eyes were bright. Iida looked like he wanted to say something formal and had wisely decided against it. Shinso said "Good answer" Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"He gave you the easy fight. You didn't take it" That was also strong data. The service route drill ended pass-level. Not perfect. Kota had not been scripted. That was camp. Even safe routes had unscripted variables. Even safe zones had people. Even quiet work could hurt. Even hurt could stay reported instead of becoming proof. Evening debrief brought everyone together again. The Hero Course looked worse than lunch and better than collapse. Aizawa reviewed the day without mercy.
"Some of you improved output control. Some of you confused output with progress. Some of you reported limits early enough to continue. Some of you reported late and lost time. Tomorrow will not become easier because you have feelings about today" Kaminari whispered "My feelings are organized around pain" Aizawa said "Discard them" Kaminari whispered "Cold" Kurose reviewed the conditional group.
"Safe-zone relay successful. Service route drill successful with unscripted civilian variable. Reporting stable. No camp status reset" No reset. Ren felt the phrase settle. No reset meant the door remained open. Not because nothing happened. Because what happened had been reported. After dinner, Ren found himself outside on the lodge porch for the approved ten-minute fresh-air block. Kurose stood inside the doorway. Shinso sat on the steps below, within awareness range but not conversation range unless invited.
The forest was dark beyond the lamps. Not completely. Enough. Ren held the family card in his pocket. The porch wood was cool under his hand. Kota appeared at the far edge of the light. Of course. He looked at Ren. Ren looked back. No pressure this time. Just a boy in a red cap holding anger like a stone. Kota spoke first.
"Conditional candidate""Yes""That's a stupid title""Yes" Kota's mouth twitched before he buried it.
"You admit stuff too easily""Argument is not always useful""Heroes love arguing that they're useful" Ren did not answer quickly. Kota kicked one heel against the porch support.
"Are you trying to be one?"
"A hero?"
"Obviously" Ren looked at the forest.
"Yes" Kota's face closed.
"Why?" There were answers a child should not have to hold. Because I know what happens when no one reaches the right place in time. Because I was told I could not. Because I want the door. Because I am afraid that if I stop trying, pain was just pain. Because people deserve routes back. He chose one that was true and not invasive.
"Because people get scared, and I want to be useful without making them carry more fear" Kota looked down.
"That's still stupid""Maybe""Stop saying maybe""No" Kota glared. Shinso's shoulders shifted below, but he did not intervene. Good. Kota looked toward the dining hall where voices carried.
"Those guys are loud""Yes""They think being heroes is fun""Some do. Some are trying not to think too much. Some are scared. Some are both" Kota looked at him sharply.
"You don't know that""No. I am guessing from visible behavior""That is weird""Yes" A pause. Then Kota asked "Are you scared?" Ren answered "Yes" Kota stared.
"You said that fast""It is not secret""Heroes don't say that" Ren looked at him.
"Maybe they should" Kota's jaw tightened. For a moment, the pressure returned. Water. Loss. A hero failing to come home. A child left with everyone else's good intentions. No heat. Not his door. Kota stepped back.
"You're still weird""Yes" He left before Ren could answer anything else. That was fine. Maybe better. Kurose stepped onto the porch.
"Status""Yellow. Kota conversation. No heat. Grief pressure low. Boundary maintained. I answered only mine" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Shinso looked up from the step.
"Answered only mine is good" Ren looked at him.
"It is""Annoying that everything becomes a line""Yes" Lights-out came later. The room smelled more strongly of damp socks than wood now, because camp was destroying poetry one shoe at a time. Shinso filled out his chart with visible resentment. Ren filled out his own. Morning relay: successful. Calls transmitted: three. One overcomplicated, corrected. Heat: mild branch trigger, resolved. Moderate forest distress trigger, resolved after staff verification. Kota: two interactions. Boundary maintained.
Weakness trigger, no heat. Safe route drill: pass-level. No Scar Tissue activation. No unreported heat. No compensation. Emotional state: tired, useful, frustrated. He paused. Then wrote: Safe zone can still hurt because quiet work is still work. That was the line. He underlined nothing. Shinso looked over.
"Good" Ren glanced at him.
"No rejection?"
"Too tired""Stable?"
"Barely. Camp food socially dangerous. Birds remain enemy. Kota has good hostility. You were less stupid than expected""Thank you""That was not praise""Trustworthy data suggests otherwise" Shinso rolled over.
"I hate you""No you do not""Do not interpret visible behavior" Ren almost laughed. Outside, the forest shifted. No smoke. No hand. No new branch crack. Not safe. Timing. But inside the lodge, charts filled, students slept, and the safe zone had become something Ren could no longer dismiss as empty. Quiet work had weight. Quiet routes had danger. Quiet answers could be brave without making themselves loud. Ren placed the family card under his pillow. Food before becoming symbolic. Route can hold one step at a time.
Today, the route had held. Not because it avoided pain. Because it kept pain from becoming the only proof that something mattered. He closed his eyes. For tonight, that was enough.
