Chương 134: The First Step Into the Room

The second day of Provisional Track began with a door that opened twice. That was not metaphorical at first. Observation Room 2 had two visible exits because Shinso had requested visible exits and Kurose had written that request down with the kind of seriousness usually reserved for evacuation routes, legal evidence, and coffee supply. R-2 had one medical door and one privacy partition, both labeled, both controlled, both on probation because Ren had insisted the room should not receive moral promotion too quickly.
The training gym chosen for the day had two large doors as well. One for Class 1-A. One for Provisional Track. Aizawa had done that deliberately. He did not say so. Everyone knew anyway. The whiteboard outside Gym Gamma had five words on it this time. STOPRETURNCONSENTROLEMAP Under them, in smaller handwriting, there was a new line. ENTERING IS NOT PROVING Ren sat in his medical chair just outside the Provisional Track door and stared at the line.
"Aizawa" Aizawa stood beside the board with his scarf loose and his eyes looking like sleep had filed a complaint and lost.
"Yes""Your signs are becoming personal""They were always personal""Hostile pedagogy""Effective pedagogy" Shinso stood beside Ren with his hands in his pockets, capture scarf training wrap folded around his neck and shoulders in the awkward way of someone still learning not to look like a child wearing someone else's future. He read the sign.
"I like this one" Ren turned his head slowly.
"Betrayal continues""It insults you more than me""That is not better""It is for me" Recovery Girl, who had claimed a chair near the wall and turned it into a medical throne, snapped "Both of you save energy for actual problems" Shinso looked at her.
"Does existing in U. A. count?"
"Yes""Then we are already spending energy efficiently" Kurose covered her mouth with the back of her hand. Aizawa did not smile. That was probably professional restraint. Class 1-A gathered at the other door. They looked less like they had walked into a briefing and more like they had walked into a room where the air itself had conditions. Midoriya held a notebook but not a pencil. Improvement. Bakugo stood with his arms crossed and the expression of someone daring a door to ask him about consent.
Todoroki looked from the whiteboard to Ren to Shinso and then to the exits, because apparently everyone was learning to count doors now. Iida had a notebook titled MODULE PROTOCOLS and a second sheet titled ASK FIRST. Uraraka and Asui stood together. Kaminari was whispering something to Sero until Jiro hit his arm without looking. Aizawa let everyone see everyone else before he spoke.
"Today is the first shared module. Ren and Shinso are entering the training room under Provisional Track conditions. This is not full integration into field drills. This is not combat training. This is not a license simulation. This is a controlled shared module with three phases" He wrote on the board. PHASE 1 — CONSENT DRILLPHASE 2 — ROLE HANDOFFPHASE 3 — LOW-STRAIN RESCUE ENTRY Kaminari raised a hand.
"Is low-strain rescue entry still allowed to be scary?" Recovery Girl said "Fear is not contraindicated" Kaminari lowered his hand.
"I do not know what that means, but I feel warned" Jiro whispered "It means yes" Aizawa tapped the first phase.
"Phase 1. Shinso will run a consent-based Brainwashing protocol with volunteers. The objective is not control. The objective is consent clarity, start and stop language, and post-use review" Shinso's shoulders went still. Not much. Enough for Ren to notice. Aizawa tapped the second phase.
"Phase 2. Class 1-A will run a role handoff without Quirk escalation. Objective is to pass responsibility for a civilian without turning the civilian into luggage or the responder into a tool" Bakugo muttered "Luggage again" Kirishima leaned toward him.
"You brought that on yourself historically""Shut up" Aizawa tapped the third phase.
"Phase 3. Ren will enter a low-strain rescue position with medical harness support. He will stabilize a weighted dummy for no more than twelve seconds unless staff ends earlier. Objective is not duration. Objective is body map, stop command, and teammate response" Ren looked at the number.
"Twelve?" Recovery Girl said "I negotiated down from thirty" Ren looked at Aizawa.
"Thirty?" Aizawa said "Initial proposal""By whom?"
"No one currently alive in this conversation" Recovery Girl lifted her cane slightly. Ren accepted that answer. Aizawa turned to the class.
"Rules. No cheering. No commentary during active phases unless assigned. No encouraging continuation. If a stop is called, you stop your body and your mouth. If you are unsure whether to help, ask. If there is no time to ask, act for immediate safety and expect review afterward" Mina raised her hand.
"What about normal encouragement before the drill?" Kurose answered "Ask first" Mina turned toward Ren and Shinso.
"Do you want normal encouragement before the drill?" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso looked mildly horrified. Ren said "No speeches" Shinso said "No motivational adjectives" Mina nodded seriously.
"Then I will say neutral good luck" Aizawa said "Neutral good luck is still good luck" Mina frowned.
"Neutral operational functioning?" Shinso stared at her.
"That is worse but acceptable" Ren said "Conditionally acceptable" Mina gave a thumbs-up, then slowly lowered it when Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Conditionally lowered" Sero whispered "This is the weirdest class ever" Todoroki said "It is becoming more precise" Bakugo snapped "That is not better" Todoroki looked at the board.
"It might be" The first phase began with names on the board. Volunteers only. Prior consent. Clear phrase. Stop phrase. Post-use review. Shinso stood in the center of the gym with Aizawa beside him and Kurose near the wall. He looked at the volunteer list as if it might explode. Iida. Kirishima. Jiro. Todoroki.
Kaminari had volunteered too and then immediately admitted he had done it partly because he was afraid of his own fear, which made Kurose pause the list and ask whether he wanted to volunteer today or volunteer later after thinking. Kaminari had chosen later and looked both embarrassed and relieved. Kurose wrote later beside his name instead of crossing it out. That mattered. Ren watched from the side in his locked chair, blanket over his knees, medical sensor on his left wrist, support brace on his right shoulder.
His role for phase one was observer only. No live tactical command unless staff asked. He had written that condition himself. It annoyed him now. Good. Shinso looked at Iida first.
"Review" Iida straightened.
"I have volunteered to participate in a consent-based Brainwashing protocol. I understand that if I answer your activation phrase, you may issue one pre-approved motor command. I understand that my stop phrase is engine brake. I understand that after the command ends, I will report experience and discomfort" Shinso stared at him.
"You memorized the sheet""Of course""That is terrifying""Thank you""Not a compliment""I accept correction" Aizawa said "Activation phrase" Shinso looked at Iida.
"Ready?" Iida nodded.
"Ready" Shinso's voice was level.
"Say start when you are ready" Iida answered "Start" Brainwashing took. The change was small. That was always the thing that made people uneasy. Not a dramatic glow. Not a villain's grin. Just Iida going still in a way that removed the person from the movement while leaving the body upright. The gym held its breath. Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Raise your right hand to shoulder height" Iida did. Clean. Slow. Shinso said "Release" Iida blinked. His hand lowered. Aizawa looked at him.
"Review" Iida inhaled.
"I remember agreeing. I remember saying start. I do not remember lifting my hand. I feel discomfort at the absence of memory but not fear. I dislike the sensation but do not regret volunteering" Shinso's expression flickered. Ren saw it. Dislike and do not regret. Good distinction. Kurose wrote it down. Shinso said "Do you want to continue future protocol later?" Iida thought. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
"Yes. With the same structure""Accepted" No one clapped. Good. Kirishima went next. He looked nervous enough to be honest about it. Shinso looked at him.
"Review" Kirishima scratched the back of his head.
"I volunteered because I want to be less weird about your Quirk and because if we are classmates I should be able to train with you without making it about me proving something" Kurose's eyes sharpened.
"That is a good correction" Kirishima looked relieved.
"Thanks" Shinso stared.
"That was annoyingly healthy" Kirishima grinned.
"I have moments""Dangerous" Kirishima's activation phrase was red light. His stop phrase was hard stop. He answered. Brainwashing took. Shinso told him to take one step back. Kirishima did. Shinso released. Kirishima blinked. Then looked down at his feet.
"Whoa" Aizawa said "Review" Kirishima swallowed.
"I hate the blank. Not you. The blank. I need to say that because my face probably looked weird" Shinso looked at him.
"It did""Yeah. Sorry. No. Wait. Not sorry. Correction. My discomfort is with losing the moment, not with you using the Quirk inside the protocol" Kurose looked like she wanted to give Kirishima a medal and knew that would ruin it. Shinso's mouth moved faintly.
"Accepted" Jiro went third. She was quiet about it. Her activation phrase was check one. Her stop phrase was feedback. Before beginning, she looked at Shinso.
"I might hate this" Shinso nodded.
"You can withdraw""I know""Do you want to?"
"No""Okay" She answered. Brainwashing took. Shinso instructed her to tap two fingers against her palm. He released. Jiro blinked. Her face went tight.
"Review" Aizawa said softly Jiro looked at her hand.
"That was worse than expected" Shinso went still. Jiro looked up immediately.
"Not because of you. Because I listen through my body a lot. Losing a moment in my body felt wrong" Shinso nodded once.
"Do you want no future protocol?" Jiro took a breath.
"Not no. Slower. Maybe shorter. Maybe with sound cue before and after" Kurose wrote. Shinso said "Accepted" Ren's left wrist gate flickered. He felt the emotional shape of the room wanting to become useful. He did not speak. Observer only. He looked at the board. CONSENT Aizawa's eyes moved to him. Ren held up one finger slightly. Map okay. Aizawa nodded once. Todoroki volunteered last. The gym became quiet in a different way. Not because Todoroki seemed afraid.
Because Todoroki often did not show fear where others expected it and showed it in places people did not understand until too late. He stood across from Shinso.
"Review" Todoroki said "I volunteered because my Quirk can alter environments around people quickly and I need to understand what it means when another person's Quirk affects agency directly" Shinso stared.
"Your answers are always like this?" Todoroki blinked.
"Yes?" Bakugo muttered "Half-and-Half writes essays out loud" Aizawa said "Silence" Todoroki continued "My activation phrase is cold zone" Bakugo snorted. Todoroki looked at him.
"It was available" Shinso's mouth twitched despite himself.
"Stop phrase?"
"Clear ice" Shinso nodded.
"Ready?" Todoroki looked at him.
"Yes" Shinso said "Say start when ready" Todoroki said "Start" Brainwashing took. The stillness in Todoroki was strange because he was already still so often. But this stillness lacked watchfulness. It was a statue of a boy rather than a boy choosing not to move. Ren's throat tightened. Not his door. Still hard. Shinso said "Turn your left hand palm up" Todoroki did.
"Release" Todoroki blinked. His hand lowered slowly. Aizawa said "Review" Todoroki looked at his hand.
"I disliked that" Shinso nodded. Todoroki looked at him.
"I also think the protocol was clean" Shinso's shoulders lowered by an almost invisible degree. Todoroki added "If we train together, I would prefer commands that do not involve my left side without prior warning" The room became very still. Shinso said "Accepted" No one asked why. Good. Ren breathed out slowly. His ribs hurt. Pain present. Good.
Phase one ended with no applause, no big speeches, and Kaminari whispering "I learned fear can be scheduled later" which Jiro said might be the best thing he had ever said by accident. Phase two began with a dummy named Civilian A. Class 1-A immediately objected to the name. Mina said "Can we name them?" Aizawa said "No" Asui said "Personhood matters" Aizawa looked at Kurose. Kurose looked at the ceiling. Recovery Girl said from the side "Do not make me adjudicate dummy naming" Yaoyorozu raised a hand.
"What if we use role labels rather than names? Such as seated civilian, arm injury civilian, panic civilian" Aizawa considered.
"Accepted" Mina whispered "Better than Civilian A" Civilian A became seated civilian with arm injury. The role handoff drill was simple in theory. One student stabilized the civilian. One student confirmed route. One student transferred responsibility verbally to another without abandoning support or treating the dummy as an object. In practice, Class 1-A discovered that clean handoffs were harder than dramatic rescues. Uraraka stabilized seated civilian with arm injury. Iida confirmed route.
Kaminari approached to receive handoff. Uraraka said "I have him" Aizawa said "Pause" Everyone froze. Uraraka's eyes widened.
"What did I do?" Aizawa said "Not failure. Identify" Ren was not supposed to answer unless staff asked. Aizawa looked at the screen.
"Observer" Ren inhaled. Permission. He spoke slowly.
"Pronoun without consent is fine for a dummy in training, but in real field, identity unknown. Also I have him is not enough handoff data" Uraraka nodded, face serious.
"So what should I say?" Aizawa looked at Ren. Ren continued "I have seated civilian with possible arm injury. Head supported. Breathing marker green. Weight altered. Route left confirmed by Iida. Kaminari, are your hands ready?" Kaminari stared.
"That is a lot" Asui said "It is the person" Kaminari swallowed.
"Right" Uraraka repeated, not perfectly, but better.
"I have seated civilian with possible arm injury. Head supported. Breathing green. Weight altered. Route left confirmed. Kaminari, hands ready?" Kaminari held up his hands.
"Hands ready""Taking on three""Taking on three""One. two. three" The handoff worked. Kaminari did not drop the dummy. He also did not make a joke for eight full seconds, which was medically notable though Recovery Girl refused to chart it. Next, Bakugo had to hand off a dummy to Todoroki. This was a mistake by design. Bakugo stabilized the dummy by the shoulder with one hand, blasting debris away with the other at a controlled angle. Todoroki approached with ice support ready.
Bakugo said "Take it" Aizawa said "Pause" Bakugo snarled "I said take it!" Kurose said "And if this were a civilian with shock, your tone just made them worse" Bakugo's face twisted. The room held. Todoroki looked at the dummy. Then at Bakugo.
"You have seated civilian with torso instability and bad emotional environment" Kaminari choked. Jiro turned away. Sero covered his mouth. Bakugo's head snapped toward Todoroki.
"What the hell did you say?" Todoroki looked genuinely thoughtful.
"Was that inaccurate?" Aizawa pressed two fingers to his forehead. Ren made a sound that might have been a laugh if his ribs allowed more ambition. Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Do not" Ren controlled it. Mostly. Kurose said "Bad emotional environment is not standard handoff language, but it is a useful observation" Bakugo looked betrayed by education. Aizawa said "Bakugo. Try again" Bakugo's jaw worked. He looked at the dummy. Then at Todoroki. Then away.
"I have seated civilian. torso unstable. debris cleared right. route behind Icyhot. hands ready?" Todoroki said "Hands ready" Bakugo's teeth clenched.
"Taking on three" Todoroki said "Taking on three""One. two. three" The transfer worked. Bakugo released. Todoroki supported. No one died. Bakugo glared at the dummy.
"Happy?" Aizawa said "Happiness is not the metric" Shinso muttered "It never is here" Phase two ended with five successful handoffs, two pauses, one correction for treating a dummy like a sack, and one new unofficial phrase that Kurose reluctantly wrote on the board. BAD EMOTIONAL ENVIRONMENT Aizawa said it would not remain. Kurose said it might. Phase three brought the medical harness. The gym shifted when Ren's chair unlocked. Not dramatically. No one gasped.
But everyone became aware that watching was easier when the person stayed on a screen. Recovery Girl stood. So did Hana and Daichi, who had arrived quietly before phase three and taken places near the medical side wall. Bentaro was absent because the training gym had not approved umbrella participation in low-strain rescue entry. Ren's chair moved toward the padded rescue station. The dummy was smaller than yesterday's, ten kilograms, seated at an angle beside a low support wall. The task was not to lift.
Not to carry. Not to prove. Stabilize for six seconds. Report map. Release. Stop if the gate widened. Aizawa stood in front of him.
"Purpose" Ren closed his eyes.
"Enter low-strain rescue position. Stabilize seated civilian for six seconds. Maintain map. Stop before spread. Release on command""Goal?"
"Cleaner, not longer""Role?"
"Student. rescue stabilization. not command""Return?"
"Chair. harness. Recovery Girl. Hana. Daichi. stop panel. left hand to blanket after release" Aizawa nodded.
"Begin when ready" Ren looked at the class. They were quiet. Too quiet. He looked at Shinso. Shinso said "Neutral operational functioning" Mina whispered "He used it" Ren breathed.
"Conditionally accepted" He moved. The harness took part of his weight as he shifted forward in the chair. His left hand reached for the dummy's shoulder. The wrist hurt. Present. The right ribs tightened. Present. The shoulder warned. Present. The dummy tipped. Ren caught it. Graft Lattice woke. Pale lines threaded around his wrist, across his shoulder, down the right ribs, not bright, not heroic, not clean. The pain gate at the wrist offered relief. The Repair Scaffold warmth started behind the ribs.
Scar Tissue built the lattice before either could spread. Ren breathed.
"Left wrist gate. local. pain present. ribs warm. shoulder bracing. map present" Aizawa counted.
"One" The class did not move. Good.
"Two" The dummy pushed against Ren's hand. The wrist gate widened slightly. Useful. Hold easier. Show them. No.
"Stop" Everything stopped. Not the drill timer. Everything. Class 1-A froze. Aizawa's hand moved to the dummy support. Recovery Girl stepped in. Ren's hand released to the blanket. The dummy settled into the rig. Ren breathed hard.
"Map" Recovery Girl said "You first""Gym Gamma. chair. harness. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. hand on blanket. dummy supported. class quiet. stopped" The monitor beeped. Not bad. Recovery Girl looked at Aizawa.
"Acceptable" Aizawa looked at the class.
"That was the drill" Bakugo's eyes narrowed.
"That was three seconds" Aizawa turned toward him.
"Yes" Bakugo stared at Ren. Ren stared back. Bakugo's jaw tightened. Then he looked away.
"Fine" Kirishima whispered "That was not bad fine" Bakugo snapped "I said fine!" Ren leaned back. His heart was racing. His wrist hurt. His ribs hurt. Pain present. The dummy was supported. He had stopped. The class had stopped with him. That was new. Mina raised her hand very slowly.
"Can I say something?" Aizawa said "Carefully" Mina looked at Ren.
"You stopped and everyone stopped. That felt like the room worked" Ren's throat tightened. The gate flickered. Stop. Pain stayed. He said "Good sentence" Mina's eyes filled.
"I am having a good sentence week" Shinso muttered "Dangerous development" Jiro said "Let her have it" Asui nodded.
"Room worked" Iida stood straighter.
"We stopped with the stop" Aizawa said "That is the minimum" Iida nodded.
"Yes. But we did it" Aizawa looked at him for a moment.
"Correct" That was as close to praise as the room could safely handle. The module ended before anyone decided to become inspired. Recovery Girl made that very clear. Ren returned to the medical side wall. His chair locked. Nutrition appeared. He drank without argument, which frightened several students more than the pale lines had. Kaminari whispered "He did not insult the protein drink" Jiro whispered "That means serious" Shinso walked over slowly, stopping two steps away. Ren looked at him.
"No commentary?" Shinso looked at the dummy.
"You stopped at three""Yes""Annoying""Why?"
"I had prepared to judge you at six" Ren almost smiled.
"Disappointed?"
"No relief face. No disappointment face. Neutral irritation""Accepted" Shinso leaned slightly closer.
"Good stop" Ren looked down.
"Not good good""Good operational distinction""Overused""Still mine sometimes" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Across the gym, Bakugo watched them from beside Kirishima. Kirishima did not say anything. Good survival instinct. Bakugo's fists opened and closed. Then he walked over. Kirishima followed at a safe distance because friendship sometimes meant witnessing the explosion without becoming shrapnel. Bakugo stopped in front of Ren. The room noticed. Aizawa noticed most. Recovery Girl lifted her cane. Bakugo looked at Ren's wrist, then his face.
"You look like shit" Ren said "Medical consensus agrees""Don't make me feel better by looking worse" The sentence landed badly because it came out rough and wrong and exactly like him. Ren looked up. Bakugo's face twisted.
"I mean—" Ren said "Not replacement" Bakugo froze. The room went too quiet. Ren continued "Bad math" Bakugo's jaw clenched so hard it looked painful.
"I know it is bad math" His voice was low.
"That does not make it shut up" Ren nodded once.
"No" Bakugo stared at him.
"You stopped""Yes""You wanted to keep going""Yes" Bakugo looked at the dummy.
"Good" Ren looked at him. Bakugo glared.
"Do not make it weird" Ren said "Too late" Shinso muttered "The room is extremely weird" Kirishima looked like he might cry. Bakugo noticed.
"Do not" Kirishima nodded too fast.
"I am not""You are""Emotionally, yes" Bakugo made a disgusted sound and stalked away. But he did not explode. That was also training. After everyone left, the gym felt larger. Ren remained in his chair with Hana beside him and Daichi behind him, one hand resting lightly on the chair handle after Ren had nodded. Recovery Girl checked numbers. Dr. Seno reviewed no graphs aloud. Aizawa erased the board except for one line. WATCHING IS NOT WAITING Then he added beneath it. ENTERING IS NOT PROVING Kurose looked at him.
"Keeping both?"
"For now" Ren closed his eyes.
"Sign violence" Aizawa said "Curriculum" Shinso, still near the exit, said "Hostile curriculum" Aizawa nodded.
"Yes" Ren breathed. The day had not been heroic in the way stories preferred. No villains. No chase. No victory pose. No dramatic save. A boy consented to have his Quirk used and learned he could dislike it without blaming the user. A girl said the blank felt wrong and was allowed to make future protocol slower. A class learned that a dummy could carry personhood if they practiced correctly. Bakugo handed off a civilian without blasting the room into proof. Midoriya reported temptation instead of hiding it.
Shinso watched Brainwashing happen without becoming a tool. Ren touched a dummy for three seconds and stopped. Three seconds. The world would not understand three seconds. That was fine. The world had misunderstood larger things. In those three seconds, a room had obeyed stop. In those three seconds, Ren had entered without proving. In those three seconds, Class 1-A had treated him as a student whose command mattered more than their need to see him continue. That was where Hero Course began.
Not with running toward danger. With a room learning how to stop when someone chose to come back.
