Chương 95: Lines That Remain

Ren woke to a ceiling that had been designed by people who did not want dreams to have corners. Flat white. Soft light. No hanging fixture. No exposed vent screws. No shadow deep enough to become a hand if he opened his eyes too quickly. The observation room at U. A. did not give fear much to work with, and somehow that made fear more inventive. For three seconds, he did not remember where he was. Then he did. U. A. medical wing. Secured observation. No loose objects. No small objects. No home release.
No student confirmed captured. Ragdoll taken. His hands were open on top of the blanket. He had fallen asleep that way because Recovery Girl had told him that if he woke with his hands clenched and frightened himself into a heat spike, she would be professionally unimpressed. He had believed her. He still believed her. That did not make waking with open hands feel less strange. His palms were cool. Not warm. Cool. The fact should have comforted him. Instead, it made the room feel too quiet.
He lifted his right hand and turned it over under the light. No redness. No ridges. No pale thread beneath the skin. No scar lines waking. Just his hand, ordinary enough to be almost insulting. A soft knock sounded on the glass. Ren looked up. Kurose stood outside the room with two sealed breakfast containers in one hand and a paper cup in the other. Her hair was tied back more messily than usual. Her clothes were fresh, but the deep crease between her brows had not slept. She opened the intercom.
"Awake?" Ren pushed himself upright.
"Yes""Bad night?"
"Yes""That answer saves time" He almost smiled. The door opened after a security check, and Kurose entered with breakfast. She placed the sealed containers on the bolted table, then stepped back while a nurse scanned them. The nurse opened both, checked the cutlery, replaced a plastic spoon with a softer one, and left with the expression of someone who had started the day annoyed at soup. Kurose sat across from him. Not too close. Not far enough to feel clinical.
"Your mother sent a message" Ren's throat tightened.
"A message?"
"Approved text. No paper left in the room" Of course. Kurose placed a tablet on the table and turned it toward him. The message was short. Eat before becoming symbolic. We are on campus. Bentaro is offended but compliant. We love you. Not because you were useful. Ren read it once. Then again. The letters blurred on the third time, so he stopped. Kurose looked away long enough to give him privacy without pretending the room had any. Ren cleared his throat.
"Bentaro should not be in unsecured storage""Your father negotiated visitation rights for the umbrella""Did he win?"
"He obtained supervised hinge checks" This time, the almost-smile became real for half a second. It hurt his face. Kurose saw it and did not comment. Good. He ate because Hana had weaponized breakfast from another room. The food was bland and warm and inspected enough to be safe. Ren hated that safety had a taste now. Halfway through, Kurose asked "How bad is it?" Ren knew she was not asking about his palms. He looked at the spoon.
"It feels like the room is holding me by the ribs" Kurose nodded once.
"That is a better sentence than pretending you are fine""It is not a useful sentence""It is useful to me" Ren did not know what to do with that. He ate another bite. Kurose watched the door for a moment, then said "Today is going to be ugly in a quiet way. Interviews. medical checks. short briefings. People wanting to see people they cannot see. People wanting answers we cannot give. Some rumors already started outside the gates" Ren's spoon stopped.
"About Bakugo?"
"About the attack. About missing staff. About injured students. About villains. Bakugo's name is not public through U. A., but leaks do not need permission to exist" Ren swallowed.
"And me?"
"Not public""Inside?" Kurose did not lie.
"Some students know enough to know there is something. They saw the room. They heard target protocol. They saw the object. They heard you say me" The spoon felt too light. Ren set it down. Kurose leaned forward slightly.
"You do not owe anyone the full truth""I know""No. You know it as policy. Today you need it as muscle" He looked at her. She held his gaze.
"If someone asks, you can say you are not cleared to answer. If someone cares about you, that will feel cruel. Say it anyway" Ren's jaw tightened.
"What if not answering makes them more afraid?"
"It will" That was so blunt he almost laughed again. Kurose continued "You are not required to bleed classified information into a hallway so other people feel less afraid for twenty seconds" Ren looked down at his unfinished breakfast.
"That sounds like something you have said to adults""I have said it to adults who should have known better""Did it work?"
"Rarely" He did smile then. Small. Kurose accepted the victory silently. A second knock came. Not on the glass this time. On the door frame. Shinso stood outside with a medical mask hanging under his chin and the posture of someone who had been told to rest and had interpreted that as walking slower. His hair was even more chaotic than usual. His voice, when the intercom opened, sounded rough.
"Permission to enter the object-free fishbowl?" Kurose looked at Ren. Ren said "Yes" The nurse checked Shinso at the door. Pockets empty. No small objects. No pens. No phone. No shoelace tips, because apparently that had become a category. Shinso looked more offended by the loss of his phone than by villain attack. When he entered, he glanced around the room.
"Wow" Ren said "Yes""This room hates personality""It is trying to prevent kidnapping""Still rude" Kurose stood.
"Ten minutes. Voice rest after. No arguing" Shinso said "I would never" Kurose stared. He looked away first.
"Fine" She left them with the door open and the glass clear. Shinso sat across from Ren, where Kurose had been, and looked at the breakfast.
"Is that food or apology paste?"
"Both""Efficient" Ren pushed the second sealed container slightly toward him.
"Hana" Shinso froze. Ren said "She insisted you eat too""She is not here""She anticipated that argument""That woman is dangerous""Yes" Shinso opened the container and ate three bites with the expression of a stray cat accepting help under protest. For a while, they did not talk. That was better than talking. Then Shinso said "I keep hearing the count" Ren looked up.
"The official one?"
"The stupid one" Ren understood. Jiro here. Kirishima here. Bakugo here, dumbass. Midoriya answered by Kota. Shinso counted by Bakugo, of all people. Ren's chest tightened.
"Yes" Shinso stirred the food he had not planned to keep eating.
"When he said my name, I thought he was going to insult me""He did""After""Yes""That was weirdly considerate""For Bakugo""For a feral grenade" Ren huffed once. The laugh hurt less this time. Shinso looked satisfied and then immediately annoyed that he was satisfied.
"Don't tell anyone I was emotionally supported by Bakugo Katsuki""I think the hallway heard""Terrible acoustics" Another pause. Ren said "Hana asked if you had someone waiting" Shinso's face closed halfway. Not all the way. Progress, maybe.
"She did""She meant it""I know""That makes it worse?"
"Obviously" Ren nodded. Shinso looked at the sealed container.
"My required parties were contacted" Ren did not ask. The silence after that was different. Not empty. Reserved. Shinso finally said "Nobody came" Ren kept his hands flat on the table.
"I am sorry" Shinso's eyes flicked up.
"Don't do the soft voice""I can be less soft""Please""That is bad""Better" Ren let the bluntness stand. Shinso ate another bite, mostly to avoid looking like he needed the conversation.
"It is not new" Shinso said after a minute"That does not make it small""I hate how your family talks""You keep accepting food from them""I was weakened by attack conditions" Ren nodded.
"Documented" Shinso's mouth twitched. Then the humor faded.
"I thought if the League came for anyone, it would be Bakugo. Then it was you too. Then Ragdoll was gone. It felt like the room kept changing the rules" Ren looked toward the glass.
"It did""No. The enemy did" Ren turned back. Shinso's voice was rough but steady.
"You keep saying structure, route, protocol, all that stuff. Fine. But yesterday there were people making choices. The room did not take Ragdoll. Some bastard did" Ren swallowed.
"Yes""And you did not fail because you were sitting down" The sentence was too direct. Ren looked at his open hands. Shinso leaned back.
"I know. I sound like a counselor. I hate it too" Ren said "You sound angry""I am""At me?"
"No" The answer came too fast to be polished. Good. Shinso looked toward the hallway. You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.
"At whoever made a room full of kids learn not to catch marbles" Ren's throat tightened.
"That is a reasonable target""I am being extremely reasonable""You are eating apology paste with hatred""Balanced diet" Kurose appeared at the door.
"Voice rest" Shinso pointed at Ren.
"He laughed""I heard. Good. Leave" Shinso stood, took the container with him when the nurse allowed it, and paused at the door. He did not look back fully.
"Here" Ren blinked. Then answered.
"Here" Shinso nodded once and left. The word stayed. Not dramatic. Not enough. Something. At 10: 20, Ren was moved from observation room one to a secured briefing room. Moved, not transferred. That distinction came from Aizawa, who looked as though he had slept for twelve angry minutes against a wall and resented the wall for surviving. The briefing room had been inspected, stripped, and rearranged. No loose objects. No small items. Two visible exits. Bolted chairs. Glass panel. Two security officers outside.
Kurose on one side. Recovery Girl standing near the wall with a cane she did not technically need and absolutely intended to use as punctuation. Ren's parents sat across from him. Hana had braided her hair again. It looked like a decision. Daichi had Bentaro back, but only after the umbrella had been inspected and tagged with a bright orange security band around the handle. Ren stared at the band. Daichi followed his gaze.
"Bentaro is now official equipment" Hana said "He is insufferable about it" Daichi looked at the umbrella.
"He earned rank" Ren's mouth trembled. Hana saw it. Her face softened before fear reclaimed it. Aizawa began without ceremony.
"Ren remains under campus protection today. No home release. We are reviewing whether guardian holding on campus can continue tonight or whether guardians will be moved to an approved external waiting location. He is not in disciplinary custody. He is not medically critical. He is targeted" Hana's jaw tightened.
"I know the word. I hate the word""So do we" That came from Recovery Girl. Hana looked at her. Recovery Girl's face was hard.
"If hating it changed the category, I would have done that first" Daichi asked "Can he sleep?" Ren looked down. Kurose answered "He slept intermittently. Monitoring showed no Scar Tissue activation. Palms cooled around midnight. No fever" Hana's shoulders lowered by a fraction.
"Good" Daichi asked "Can he eat?"
"Yes" Kurose said "And did" Hana looked at Ren. He said "I ate""How much?"
"Enough" Recovery Girl snapped "Half breakfast and supplemental drink. Do not let him lawyer food" Hana's eyes narrowed at Ren. He looked away. Daichi murmured "Betrayed by medicine" Ren said "Frequently" Aizawa waited until the human part had room, then continued.
"We need guardian consent for three temporary safety measures. One: no unvetted items brought to Ren. Two: controlled physical contact until object-capture risk is better understood. Three: restricted communication devices. He will not have personal unsupervised messaging today" Hana closed her eyes.
"That will feel like punishment" Ren said "It is not punishment" She opened her eyes.
"I know. I am not talking about what it is. I am talking about what it will feel like" He could not answer that. She was right. Daichi leaned forward.
"What does controlled physical contact mean in practice?" Kurose answered "Ask before touching. Staff present. No items in hand. No passing objects. If Ren shows heat spike or disorientation, contact stops" Hana's face twisted.
"So I ask permission to hug my son" Recovery Girl said "Yes" The word was brutal. Then she added "And I hate it too" Hana's anger had nowhere to go after that. It sat in her hands instead. She folded them on the table because there was no bag to hold. Daichi asked "How long?" Aizawa answered "Unknown" Daichi nodded slowly.
"Terrible answer""Yes" Ren looked at his father. Daichi's voice stayed calm.
"Then we use it until we have a better one" Hana breathed in sharply. Not disagreement. Pain. Ren said "I consent" Everyone looked at him. He continued before the words could become too symbolic.
"I hate it. I consent because object route is real and because not having rules would make every contact a question" Hana's eyes filled.
"You should not have to be this reasonable" Ren said "I am not sure I am" Daichi reached across the table, stopped before touching, and asked "May I?" Ren nodded. Daichi placed two fingers lightly over Ren's wrist. Not a grip. A marker.
"You are allowed to hate the answer while following it" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes" Hana whispered "That is my line" Daichi did not move his fingers.
"I adapted it""Thief""Marriage" Ren made a small sound. A laugh. Real enough that Hana's eyes broke. For one minute, the briefing room was not safe. Not exactly. But it was theirs. Then the door opened after a knock. Kurose checked the hall and frowned.
"Bakugo?" Bakugo stood outside with Aizawa behind him, not escorting so much as preventing a natural disaster from finding the wrong door. Bakugo had a bandage on his cheek and a shirt that looked borrowed from U. A. emergency supplies. He glared into the room as if all furniture had disappointed him. Aizawa said "He requested to speak to Akiyama" Bakugo snapped "I didn't request" Aizawa looked at him. Bakugo's jaw flexed.
"I said I had something to say""That is a request""Shut up" Hana stared. Daichi looked fascinated. Ren said "Now?" Bakugo's eyes cut to him.
"No, next winter" Aizawa said "Two minutes. Guardians may remain if Akiyama consents" Ren looked at Hana and Daichi. Then back to Bakugo.
"They can stay" Bakugo looked offended by the existence of parents but did not object. He entered after the same object check. No loose items. No small objects. No explosions, though that was probably not technically enforceable. He stood instead of sitting. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he pointed at Ren.
"You better not make yesterday into some self-sacrifice crap" Ren blinked. Hana's eyebrows lifted. Bakugo continued, anger making the words rougher than usual but not careless.
"You stayed in that room because leaving would've screwed everyone. Fine. That's not the same thing as being useless. If you start acting like sitting there means you didn't do anything, I'll blast the chair next time" Aizawa said "You will not" Bakugo ignored him. Ren stared.
"That was your message?" Bakugo's face darkened.
"My message is stop looking like that""Like what?"
"Like you're trying to apologize to the floor" The room went very still. Ren looked down despite himself. Bakugo threw both hands up.
"There! That!" Hana covered her mouth. Not laughing. Maybe. Daichi looked at Bakugo as if reassessing an entire species. Ren said "You were almost captured" Bakugo's eyes sharpened.
"Yeah. And I wasn't""Because your group held you""Because my group held me and because you yelled useful crap through the wall""I did not yell""Whatever" Ren breathed.
"Ragdoll was captured" Bakugo's expression changed. Just enough.
"Yeah""I did not stop that" Bakugo's voice dropped.
"No one asked you to stop everything" The sentence sounded like it hurt him to say. Maybe because he needed it too. Ren looked at him. Bakugo looked away first.
"I hate being a target" he muttered Ren said "So do I""No, you hate it quietly. That's worse""Is it?"
"Yes. At least when I hate something, people know to move" Daichi said softly "There is some truth in that" Hana whispered "Daichi" Bakugo looked at them like he had forgotten parents existed. Then looked back at Ren.
"I'm not saying thanks again""You already did?" Bakugo's face twisted.
"At camp""That counted?"
"Don't push it" Ren nodded.
"Then I will not say you are welcome""Good" Aizawa said "Time" Bakugo turned to leave, then stopped at the door. His shoulders were tense. Without looking back, he said "No one got me" Ren understood the sentence had two meanings. No one captured him. No one owned the fact that he had been hunted. Ren answered "No one got me either" Bakugo looked back then. For one second, no glare. Just raw recognition. Then it vanished.
"Keep it that way" He left. Hana exhaled slowly.
"That boy is a thunderstorm with legs" Daichi nodded.
"Useful weather" Ren almost laughed again. Aizawa remained in the doorway.
"He is not cleared for emotional visits. That was not an emotional visit" Kurose said "Of course" Aizawa looked at her. Kurose looked back. He left. Hana waited until the door closed.
"He came because he was worried" Ren said "He would hate that sentence""Most true things survive being hated" Daichi said "Your mother is collecting lines again" Hana looked at him.
"I am under stress""You are always under stress when profound" Ren's mouth hurt from almost smiling. The guardian briefing ended with signatures. Not dramatic ones. Consent forms for temporary restrictions. Acknowledgments of target protocol. Communication limits. Item restrictions. Controlled contact. Guardian presence. Emergency relocation authorization. Hana signed with a hand that shook. Daichi signed slowly.
Ren watched every stroke and understood that signatures could be a form of bleeding no one photographed. After they left, Kurose stayed. Ren looked at the forms.
"I hate that they had to sign for less access to me" Kurose put the folder away.
"They signed for more chances to keep you" That answer was unfair. Too good. Ren looked at her.
"You are becoming dangerously like my mother" Kurose's face changed with horror.
"Retract that""No""I have authority""This room has no loose objects. You cannot throw anything" She stared at him. Then, incredibly, laughed once. Short. Tired. Human. Recovery Girl appeared in the doorway.
"I heard laughter. Who is destabilizing my observation case?" Kurose said "He insulted me" Ren said "Trustworthy insult" Recovery Girl looked between them.
"Fine. Ten minutes rest. Then student witness review begins" The word student shifted the room again. Not because he had forgotten. Because the day had layers and each one waited its turn to hurt. The witness review was not an interrogation. Nezu had apparently made sure of that. It took place through recorded prompts and short supervised conversations, not a line of adults demanding children reassemble a battlefield perfectly while still smelling smoke in their hair.
Ren was not required to recount every fragment yet. Only the safe operational timeline. He spoke carefully. Porch smoke association. Morning review. Forest contact. Smoke real. Kota question. Midoriya deviation. Bakugo target pattern. Ragdoll missing. Object route. Second target association. No lattice. No movement. He did not mention details beyond clearance. He did not name villains. He did not say what he did not know.
When he finished, the recording officer asked "Is there anything else you believe is important?" Ren hesitated. Kurose watched but did not answer for him. Ren said "Yes" The officer waited. Ren looked at his hands.
"The safe zone did not fail all at once. It adapted several times. Students helped. Arai identified route problems. Sano's cards helped people remember rules. Kenta kept physical paths clear. Shinso stopped unsafe movement. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu prevented object contact. Group Two held visual contact. Kota reported a sound. Those should be in the record" The officer's expression changed. Softened. Then returned to professional.
"They will be" Ren added "Not as decoration" Kurose's eyes warmed by a fraction. The officer nodded.
"Understood" Ren sat back. That felt more exhausting than some drills. Kurose closed the recording.
"Good" Shinso was not there to correct her. Ren did it anyway.
"Trustworthy" Kurose gave him a look.
"Do not become smug in recovery""I will avoid it""You will fail""Probably" By late afternoon, the students were allowed one controlled group-room overlap. Not all of them. Not long. Not public. A room larger than Ren's observation room had been cleared and stripped of hazards, then arranged with chairs in clusters that did not let targets stack and did not isolate anyone. Staff lined the edges casually, which fooled no one. Midoriya was not present. He was still in medical care. Ragdoll was not present.
That absence entered before anyone else. Ren came in with Kurose. Bakugo was already there, sitting as if the chair had personally insulted him. Kirishima sat near him but not too near, because target spacing had become social geometry. Sero leaned back with a cup of water. Kaminari looked half-asleep. Uraraka sat with Iida and Asui. Todoroki stood by the wall until Yaoyorozu said something too low to hear and he sat. Tokoyami's shadow curled close. Shoji watched the exits without making it obvious.
Shinso arrived last, saw Hana and Daichi were not there, and looked relieved and disappointed in a way that made Ren look away. No one knew how to start. So Kaminari did.
"Anyone else feel like if they see a marble ever again, they're going to scream?" Sero raised a hand.
"Kinda already screamed in my soul" Kirishima nodded.
"I used to think marbles were pretty harmless" Bakugo snapped "Why were you thinking about marbles before?"
"Childhood?"
"Wrong hobby" Kaminari pointed at the wall where staff had posted the item protocol.
"No heroic touching is still my favorite rule" Jiro, from the opposite side, said "That explains your dating life" Kaminari pressed a hand to his chest.
"I am injured""Emotionally only""Those count" Uraraka laughed. It broke halfway. She covered her mouth. No one mocked her. The laugh had still happened. That mattered. Iida adjusted his glasses.
"I propose we acknowledge that humor may occur without implying diminished seriousness" Everyone stared at him. Asui blinked.
"Iida, that was the most Iida way to say laughing is okay" His ears went red.
"I was attempting clarity" Bakugo muttered "Nerd committee" Ren said "Accurate" Bakugo looked at him.
"You're in it""Yes""Then it's an insult""Still accurate" Kirishima smiled into his cup. Uraraka looked at Ren then, her eyes still red.
"How are your hands?" The room quieted, but not too sharply. A normal question made strange by context. Ren answered plainly.
"Cool most of today. Warm sometimes. No lattice" She nodded.
"Good" Then she looked down.
"I keep thinking if I had followed Deku faster" Iida straightened.
"Uraraka" She shook her head.
"I know. I know what everyone's going to say. We were told to hold. We would have made more problems. I know. I still think it" Ren waited. Not every thought needed immediate correction. Asui spoke instead.
"I think it too" Iida's hands curled on his knees.
"So do I" The room breathed around that. Kirishima looked at Bakugo.
"I thought if I let go of him for one second, he'd be gone" Bakugo snarled "I wasn't going anywhere" Sero said "You were absolutely going somewhere" Kaminari lifted one weak finger.
"Several somewheres" Bakugo glared at all of them. Then his voice dropped.
"I didn't" Kirishima nodded.
"No. You didn't" That was the important line. Not the argument before it. Bakugo looked away. Todoroki spoke from the wall side.
"I almost froze the sphere directly" Yaoyorozu's hands tightened.
"I almost made a box around it too close" Ren looked at them.
"But you did not" Todoroki's eyes met his.
"No" Yaoyorozu looked down.
"The tray vanished" Sero whispered "Better tray than person""That is exactly what everyone says" Yaoyorozu said Her voice was controlled. Too controlled.
"It is correct. It is also horrible" No one corrected her. Good. Shinso leaned back.
"I used my Quirk on a student" Uraraka looked at him.
"To stop them running outside""Yes""Then thank you" His face closed.
"That's not what I was fishing for" She smiled weakly.
"Too bad" Asui nodded.
"Thank you, Shinso" He looked trapped. Kaminari said "Take the thanks before it gets weird" Shinso muttered "Too late" Ren said "Trustworthy" Shinso pointed at him.
"I will throw a metaphorical marble at you" Bakugo growled "Nobody says marble anymore""Agreed" Sero said"Banned word" Kaminari said Jiro said "Too late. It has lore" The room almost laughed again. Almost. Then Kota appeared in the doorway. Mandalay stood behind him. The room went still in a different way. Not because he was a child. Because he had been at the center of one of the lines everyone was afraid to touch. Kota looked at the students.
His eyes found Midoriya's empty chair, though there was no chair marked for him. Then Ren. Then Bakugo. Then the floor. Mandalay said "He asked to say one thing" No one moved. Kota walked in three steps and stopped near the front. Not close to anyone. His hands were fists at his sides. He looked furious. Terrified. Alive.
"Deku is breathing" he said Uraraka's face crumpled. Iida bowed his head. Asui whispered "Thank you" Kota looked like he might run. Then he added "He's stupid" Bakugo said "Obviously" Several people inhaled sharply. Kota looked at him. Bakugo stared back. Then Kota said "You too" The room froze. Bakugo's eyes widened a fraction. Kirishima made a choking sound that was not cough this time. Kota continued before anyone could stop him.
"They wanted you and you still yelled at everybody" Bakugo's mouth opened. No words came out. A historic event. Kota looked at Ren next.
"And you're stupid too. You stayed in a chair when you wanted to leave" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Kota glared.
"I'm not thanking anybody" Mandalay's face softened painfully. Ren said "Okay" Kota seemed offended by the lack of argument. Then he looked at the room.
"But I saw stuff. If I hear clicks again, I'll say it. So people should shut up when someone small says something" Silence. Then Aizawa, from the wall, said "Reasonable" Kota blinked like he had not expected adult backup. Bakugo muttered "Bossy brat" Kota snapped "Angry luggage" The room died. Not literally. Emotionally, structurally, spiritually. Kaminari made a sound like a deflating balloon. Sero covered his face. Kirishima bent forward, shoulders shaking. Jiro turned toward the wall.
Even Aizawa's scarf seemed to pause. Bakugo stood halfway.
"What did you call me?" Kota did not step back.
"You heard me" Mandalay put a hand over her mouth. Ren thought, distantly, that maybe this was how the world healed sometimes. Not beautifully. Not cleanly. Through a child insulting a kidnapping target with brutal accuracy. Aizawa said "Bakugo. Sit" Bakugo's face suggested every god in every religion had failed him. He sat. Kota looked satisfied for exactly one second, then looked ashamed of being satisfied. Ren said "Good report" Kota glared at him.
"Don't teacher me""Sorry""No sorry before alive" Kota snapped Hana had infected the child. Ren stared. Mandalay looked like she might cry. Kota turned and walked back to her. At the door, he paused.
"Tell Deku I said he's stupid when he wakes up" Uraraka wiped her face.
"I will" Kota nodded once and left. For several seconds, no one spoke. Then Shinso said "Angry luggage" Bakugo launched out of his chair. Aizawa said "Sit" Bakugo sat so hard the chair scraped. Kurose, standing near the door, looked at Ren. Ren looked back. No heat. No spike. Just a room full of children who had almost been lost and were somehow still capable of being ridiculous. That did not fix anything. It drew a line around what remained. The overlap ended after twenty minutes. Nobody wanted to leave.
Everyone did anyway. That was becoming the pattern. By evening, Ren returned to observation room one. The room still had no loose objects. It still felt like being held by the ribs. His parents were still on campus. Shinso was assigned nearby. Bakugo was under separate target observation and probably making everyone regret protecting him. Midoriya was breathing. Kota had become a witness with teeth. Ragdoll was still gone. Ren opened his chart. He wrote: Day after attack. Students counted in pieces.
Guardian restrictions signed. Bakugo visit. Message: do not apologize to the floor. Group overlap. Humor occurred without closing grief. Kota reported Midoriya breathing and called Bakugo angry luggage. Ragdoll still missing. No Scar Tissue activation. No hidden heat. Hands cool most of day. Target protocol still active. He stopped. The next line took longer. The lines that remain are not enough to replace the missing one, but they are real. He read it twice. It was not good. It was trustworthy.
Outside the glass, Kurose saw him close the chart and dimmed the light. Ren lay back under the ceiling with no corners. For the first time, the room did not feel less frightening. But it felt less empty. Somewhere nearby, Shinso was probably pretending not to care about a chair. Somewhere down the hall, Bakugo was alive and furious and insulted by a child. Somewhere behind medical doors, Midoriya breathed. Somewhere in guardian holding, Hana and Daichi waited with an official umbrella. Somewhere beyond U. A.
, Ragdoll remained in enemy hands. The count had come home in pieces. The pieces spoke back. Ren opened his hands over the blanket. Cool. Empty. Still his.
