Chương 126: Not a Prize

Ren learned that wanting something could become suspicious when the world chose the worst possible time to offer it. Hero Course. The words had lived in him for years in different shapes. At four, they had been impossible because a doctor had looked at a file and told his parents there was nothing observable enough to call a Quirk. At ten, they had been a fantasy he did not say aloud because fantasies became embarrassing when the body offered no evidence.
At the Sports Festival, they had become a door he could see for the first time, not open, not reach, but see. After Todoroki, after Scar Tissue had burned under his skin and the crowd had gone quiet around his pain, the words had become dangerous. Then Garaki had made them contaminated. Now Hero Course sat beside his bed like an object recovered from a crime scene. Ren hated that he still wanted it. That felt like betrayal. Not of U. A. Not of the dream. Of himself. R-2 remained dim under afternoon light.
The curtains were half-open because Recovery Girl had decided natural light was medically acceptable only if it did not develop opinions. The signs remained on the wall. The crooked barley label remained crooked. Bentaro remained under Daichi's chair with its suspicious history tag and the dignity of an umbrella that had outlived several administrative regimes. Ren lay propped at ten degrees. Ten was new. Ten was an empire compared to eight.
Recovery Girl had allowed it after a fifteen-minute argument with his vitals, his posture, and reality. She had announced it was not a victory. Ren had accepted it as conquest. The pale lines of Graft Lattice were quiet under his skin, except around the left wrist, where a faint thread appeared whenever he moved his fingers too quickly. Pain stayed present. Not pleasant. Present. That mattered more than comfort. Hana sat by the bed, reading a message from Kurose on the approved device.
Daichi sat beside her with his notebook open, pretending to organize household logistics while actually watching Ren's breathing with fatherly incompetence at subtlety. Recovery Girl entered with a tray. Ren looked at it.
"No""You have not seen it""I sensed intent""Your Quirk does not cover menu prediction""Medical meals have hostile patterns" The tray landed on the side table. Broth. Soft rice. Protein drink. Soft spoon. Ren stared at the spoon.
"It has returned" Recovery Girl folded her arms.
"It never left""Villain behavior""The spoon is more medically trustworthy than most people in this building" Daichi leaned forward.
"Bentaro objects to being ranked beneath cutlery" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Bentaro is not a patient" Daichi looked down at the umbrella.
"Yet" Hana closed her eyes.
"Daichi" Ren's mouth twitched. The right ribs complained. He stopped before a laugh became a mistake. Stop before useful. Stop before too much. The new phrase sat inside him now, ugly and necessary. Recovery Girl watched his expression shift.
"Map""R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. ten degrees. left wrist. ribs annoyed. spoon hostile. hungry""Hunger is acceptable""Spoon remains hostile""Eat anyway" He ate three spoonfuls before the door chimed. Recovery Girl looked toward it like the door had personally failed a background check. Kurose's voice came through the speaker.
"It is me" Recovery Girl pressed the door release. Kurose entered first. Aizawa followed. Behind them stood Shinso Hitoshi, hands in his pockets, shoulders loose in a way that said he had spent the entire walk making them be loose. Ren went still. The spoon paused halfway between bowl and mouth. Shinso looked at him. Then at the spoon. Then at the room signs. Then at Bentaro. Then back at Ren.
"You look awful" Ren lowered the spoon.
"Accurate greeting" Recovery Girl pointed at Shinso.
"Approved opening" Shinso blinked.
"That was not my intention""Intentions are overrated. Results matter" Aizawa muttered "Dangerous sentence in this room" Kurose stepped in before the room could become entirely itself.
"Ten-minute visit. Seated. No emotional ambushes. No future agreements. No competitive suffering" Shinso looked at her.
"Do people schedule competitive suffering here?" Ren said "Midoriya exists" Aizawa said "Bakugo exists" Recovery Girl said "All Might exists" The room paused. Then Shinso said "Fair" Kurose pulled one chair closer but not too close to the bed. Shinso sat. He did not ask if Ren was okay. That was good. He did not ask what the integration felt like. That was better. He sat, looked at Ren's wrist, and said "So it works" The room sharpened. Recovery Girl shifted. Kurose's gaze moved. Aizawa watched both boys.
Ren looked down at the faint line under his skin.
"Yes" Shinso's face did not change.
"I hate that" Ren breathed.
"Same""Good" The word landed quietly. Good did not mean good. They both knew. Shinso leaned back in the chair.
"Graft Lattice?"
"Working description only""I heard""Still saying it""I figured" Ren lifted the spoon again. His wrist trembled once. Pain modulation flickered at the joint, a small thread trying to soften the pull before he asked. He felt the door. If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement. He swallowed.
"Stop" The line narrowed. Pain remained. The spoon did not fall. Shinso watched. No awe. No pity. Just watching.
"That new?"
"Yes""Useful" Ren's mouth tightened.
"Yes""Unwanted""Yes""Annoying" Ren looked at him.
"Very" Shinso nodded.
"Seems on brand" Hana made a small sound that was almost a laugh and almost a sob. Daichi looked down at his notebook. Recovery Girl checked the monitor with exaggerated professionalism. Kurose's expression softened for half a second. Aizawa saw too much and said nothing. Ren put the spoon down.
"Hero Course" Shinso looked at him.
"There it is""Could delay""Would you?" Ren closed his eyes.
"No""Me neither" The answer should have felt good. It did not. It felt like stepping onto a floor that had not been inspected after an earthquake. Shinso looked toward the wall sign.
"Room still on probation""Yes""Hero Course should be too" Ren opened his eyes.
"That is unfair to the course""No, it is accurate. Everything in this building should be on probation after the last month" Aizawa said "That includes students" Shinso did not turn.
"I know" Ren looked at him.
"You want it" Shinso's hands stayed in his pockets.
"Yes" The honesty was sharp. No joke. No sarcasm to hide behind. Just yes. Ren breathed.
"Good" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Do not sound relieved" Ren looked down.
"I am" Shinso's eyes sharpened. Ren corrected himself.
"I am glad. Not relieved" Kurose's gaze softened. Shinso accepted the distinction with a small nod.
"Better" Ren said "You were already earning it""So were you""No""Yes" Ren looked away. Shinso's voice stayed flat.
"Do not be stupid with me. That is Bakugo's brand" Ren almost laughed again and stopped before the ribs turned it into punishment. Shinso leaned forward.
"You were being evaluated before the lab""Not enough""Not cleared" Ren's eyes moved back to him. Shinso looked deeply irritated at having to say the emotionally correct thing.
"Different sentence" Aizawa's mouth twitched. Kurose whispered "Infected" Shinso ignored them. Ren said "Garaki changed the assessment""Yes""That matters""Yes""It contaminates it""Yes" Shinso did not soften the answers. That helped. Ren swallowed.
"If they pick me because a villain wanted my body, I will hate them" Shinso nodded once.
"If they pick you because a villain wanted your body, I will hate them too" The room went very still. Shinso continued "If they pick me because my Quirk is useful and scary, I will hate them" Ren breathed.
"If they do not pick you because your Quirk is useful and scary, I will hate them too" Shinso stared at him. Then his mouth curved faintly.
"Good. Then we can hate properly" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Healthy rivalry""Disgusting phrase""Accurate?"
"Unfortunately possible" Recovery Girl made a noise.
"If healthy rivalry becomes medical stupidity, I will end the rivalry" Aizawa said "You cannot end rivalry""I can sedate components of rivalry" Shinso looked at Ren.
"She means us" Ren nodded.
"Likely" Hana looked between them and said softly "You both sound twelve" Ren considered that.
"I was denied normal twelve" Shinso said "Same" Daichi closed his notebook.
"Then perhaps some delayed twelve is acceptable" Kurose looked at him.
"That is either very wise or very dangerous" Daichi nodded solemnly.
"Parenthood" The room breathed. Not easy. Easier. Shinso's gaze drifted to Ren's wrist again.
"Does it hurt?" Ren answered because Shinso had earned the kind of question he had asked.
"Yes""Good?" Ren thought. Pain as information. Pain as anchor. Pain as proof the body had not lost the room. Pain as risk if he confused it with value. Pain as not the enemy. Pain as not the price of usefulness. Pain as one data stream among others.
"Sometimes" Shinso nodded as if that made sense.
"Does it make you stronger?" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed. Aizawa looked toward her but did not stop the question. Ren looked at his hand.
"No" Shinso waited. Ren continued "It makes me less removable" The sentence settled over the room. Less removable. Not invincible. Not powerful. Not healed. Less removable. Shinso's eyes sharpened.
"That is different""Yes""Hero-shaped" Ren's jaw tightened.
"Unfortunately" Shinso leaned back.
"Good" Ren glared. Shinso lifted one shoulder.
"Not good good. Good useful distinction""Useful is a dangerous word""I know""Do you?" Shinso's face went still.
"When people are afraid of my Quirk, they want distance. When they think it might help, they want access. Yes. I know" Ren looked down.
"Sorry" Shinso's voice flattened.
"Do not" Ren caught himself. No sorry before alive. No apologies that made the other person manage you. He inhaled.
"That was automatic""Gross""Yes""Improve""Trying" Kurose looked like she wanted to frame the exchange and also bury it. Aizawa said "Good" Both boys glared at him. He looked faintly satisfied. Kurose checked the time.
"Five minutes" Shinso sighed.
"Cruel""Structured""Cruel with paperwork""No paperwork""Cruel with invisible paperwork" Nezu would have admired that if present. Kurose looked almost offended on his behalf. Ren shifted his left hand on the blanket. Pain flickered. The gate tried to open. He felt it sooner this time.
"Stop" The line narrowed. Shinso watched again.
"Can you do that every time?"
"No""Good to know""Bad to know""Same thing" Ren looked at him.
"If I fail, it can spread. Pain disappears wrong. Body map goes bad. Repair Scaffold tries to help. Scar Tissue reacts. Fever. hunger. collapse maybe" Shinso absorbed every word. No flinch. No fascination.
"Then the Hero Course people need to know stop means stop" Recovery Girl said "Everyone needs to know stop means stop" Shinso looked at her.
"They do not""No" she said "They do not" Kurose crossed her arms.
"That becomes part of the transfer agreement" Aizawa nodded.
"Stop protocols. Withdrawal protocols. No endurance scoring" Ren looked at him.
"No endurance scoring?"
"You heard me""But endurance is—" Aizawa's gaze sharpened.
"Dangerous word" Ren closed his mouth. Shinso looked deeply pleased. Ren glared at him.
"Do not enjoy this""I am enjoying it responsibly""Impossible" Kurose said "There will be no ranking based on how long Ren remains functional after injury or how long Shinso can hold command under social pressure" Shinso's expression cooled.
"That second one happens""Yes""In teachers?"
"In people""Good correction" Kurose nodded.
"Thank you" Aizawa looked at both boys.
"You will both have modified assessment terms. Not easier. Different" Ren said "People will call that special treatment" Aizawa replied "People call many things many things. Their vocabulary is not our curriculum" Shinso looked at Ren.
"That was almost inspiring" Ren said "Worrying" Aizawa looked tired.
"I am standing right here""Yes" Shinso said "That worsens it" Daichi coughed into his hand. Hana smiled into Ren's hair. Recovery Girl checked the monitor and pretended not to notice. Then Shinso's expression shifted. Not dramatically. Enough.
"If we both enter, people will compare us" Ren said "They already do""Not like this""No""They will say you got in because Kamino made you important""Yes""They will say I got in because Brainwashing is useful after the League escaped""Yes""They will be wrong""Yes""Will that matter?" Ren looked at him. Kurose had answered that question yesterday for him. Now it was his turn.
"To them? maybe not" Shinso's eyes stayed on his. Ren continued "To the record? yes. To us? eventually, I hope" Shinso stared.
"You stole that from Kurose""Yes""Shameless""She has good lines""She does" Kurose closed her eyes.
"I am surrounded by plagiarists" Aizawa said "Professional hazard" Ren's smile faded.
"What if I cannot do it?" The question came out quieter than he intended. No one answered too fast. Shinso looked down at his own hands.
"Then you cannot do it yet" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yet?"
"Maybe. Or ever. That is not the same as never having wanted it" The room held the sentence carefully. Shinso continued "If I fail, it does not mean Brainwashing was a villain Quirk after all. It means I failed an exam or was not ready. Different sentence" Ren breathed.
"Different sentence""Yes" Ren looked at the ceiling. The Hero Course door did not become clean. It became more accurately dirty. That helped more than comfort. Shinso said "If they call it a prize, I leave" Kurose looked at him.
"The room?"
"The sentence" Ren looked back at him.
"If they call it compensation, I leave too" Aizawa nodded.
"If anyone frames transfer as compensation, report it" Recovery Girl said "To me" Kurose said "To me" Aizawa said "To me" Hana said "To us" Daichi raised a hand.
"Bentaro accepts complaints" Recovery Girl pointed at him again.
"Umbrella jurisdiction denied" Daichi lowered his hand.
"Pending appeal" Ren looked at all of them. Too many adults. Too much care. Too much danger. Still better than fewer. Shinso's visit reached the time limit. Kurose stood.
"Time" Shinso did not argue. That was suspicious. He rose slowly. Ren looked at him.
"You answer?" Shinso put his hands back in his pockets.
"Not today" Ren nodded.
"Same""Liar""Yes""Same" They looked at each other. The thing between them was not comfort. It was not quite friendship in the soft way other people said it. It was rivalry wrapped around recognition, sarcasm around fear, a door neither of them trusted and both of them wanted. Shinso said "If we do this, I am not letting you become tragic about it" Ren replied "If we do this, I am not letting you become convenient about it" Shinso's mouth curved.
"Deal" Ren's left hand shifted. The pale line flickered. He felt the gate.
"Stop" It narrowed. Pain stayed. Shinso saw.
"Good" Ren looked at him.
"Not good good""Good useful distinction""Plagiarist" Shinso turned toward the door.
"Deny everything" Kurose opened the door. Aizawa stepped aside. Before Shinso left, he looked back once.
"Ren" Ren turned his head. Shinso's expression was unreadable except for the parts that were not.
"If they make this about what Garaki did, we correct them" Ren swallowed.
"And if they make it about what we choose?"
"Then we prove them inconveniently right" Ren breathed.
"Healthy rivalry""Still disgusting" Then Shinso left. The room felt emptier afterward. Not worse. Emptier. There was a difference. Recovery Girl moved to the monitor.
"Numbers?" Ren closed his eyes.
"High but not stupid" She checked.
"Accurate" Kurose returned to the bedside.
"You did well" Ren opened one eye.
"Dangerous phrase""You remained a person during a decision-shaped conversation" He looked at her.
"That is a low bar""No" she said "It is the bar monsters keep trying to bury" Ren closed his eyes again. The words stayed. Aizawa spoke from near the door.
"Hero Course is not the prize" Ren did not open his eyes.
"What is?"
"There is no prize" Ren breathed.
"Good" Aizawa continued "There is a track. Conditions. Work. Risk. Vetoes. Withdrawal. Annoying instructors. More paperwork than anyone wants. People misunderstanding why you are there. People underestimating you. People overestimating you. People wanting inspiration when you are trying to manage pain. People treating Shinso like a shortcut. People treating you like evidence. We correct them. You correct them. Sometimes you ignore them because the rescue matters more" Ren listened. Aizawa's voice flattened more.
"And if you enter, you do not enter as apology, proof, compensation, warning, prize, or weapon" Ren opened his eyes.
"As what?" Aizawa looked at him.
"Student" The word hit harder than Hero Course. Student. Not asset. Not witness. Not target. Not specimen. Not project. Not gift. Not tragedy. Student. Ren's eyes burned. Kurose looked away. Recovery Girl suddenly became very interested in the monitor. Hana's hand covered Ren's hair. Daichi's hand found Ren's left fingers under the blanket. Ren whispered "Student" Aizawa nodded.
"If you can tolerate that horror" Ren swallowed.
"I will consider it""Good" Recovery Girl pulled the blanket higher.
"Consider it while sleeping" Ren muttered "Everything ends with sleep""Correct""What if I object?"
"Sleep will hear your objection in private" He closed his eyes because alive remained the undefeated argument and because student was a word that needed quiet around it. Later, after Ren slept, the adults remained in R-2 because no one trusted transition. Hana watched her son's face.
"He wants it" Daichi nodded.
"Yes""He is afraid wanting it means Garaki wins" Kurose's face tightened.
"Yes" Aizawa leaned against the wall.
"Then we make sure the process proves otherwise" Recovery Girl snorted.
"The process will try to become stupid""Then we hit it""With policy?"
"With many things" Daichi looked at Bentaro. Recovery Girl pointed without looking.
"No umbrella violence" Daichi sighed.
"Bentaro remains underutilized" Hana almost smiled. Then she looked at Aizawa.
"Would you want him in your class?" The room went quiet. Aizawa did not answer immediately. Good. Hana deserved more than reflex. Finally, he said "I would want him trained before the world gets another chance to test him untrained""That is not the same answer""No" She waited. Aizawa looked at Ren sleeping under signs and medical lines and pale traces of a Quirk that had learned to make rules around stolen functions. Then he said "Yes" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi's hand covered hers.
Aizawa added "Not because he is safe" Hana opened her eyes.
"No""Because he understands danger better than most students and needs to learn that understanding danger is not the same as owing it his body" Recovery Girl said "Finally, a curriculum I do not hate" Kurose looked at him.
"And Shinso?" Aizawa's mouth tightened.
"Yes" No hesitation this time.
"Not because Brainwashing is useful. Because he has spent his entire life being told what his Quirk means and still decided other people should have choices around him" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Recovery Girl looked toward the bed.
"Then the nightmare begins" Daichi frowned.
"That sounds ominous""It is school" Aizawa looked at the door.
"It is Hero Course" Kurose said "On probation" Hana looked at Ren.
"Everything is on probation" In his sleep, Ren's left hand twitched. The pale line around his wrist flickered once, narrowed, and faded. Pain stayed where it belonged. The room stayed around him. Outside, U. A. began writing a transfer process that would try, fail, be corrected, and try again to hold two impossible truths at once. Ren and Shinso had earned consideration before the war touched them. The war touching them still changed what protection required. Neither truth erased the other.
No one in the building knew yet whether the door would open cleanly. But for the first time, the door had a name that did not belong to a villain. Student.
