Chương 89: The Boy in the Smoke

The safe zone listened. That was what the main hall had become after Midoriya arrived broken and alive. Not silent. Never silent. There were too many students breathing too fast, too many adults speaking in clipped routes, too many doors being checked and rechecked, too much smoke pressing against the sealed windows for silence to survive. But underneath all of it, the room listened. For footsteps. For the next radio crackle. For Mandalay's voice. For a name. For the moment when alive became confirmed or lost.
Ren sat in the chair Kenta had brought him, back supported, hands open on his knees. Heat had not left him. It had only reorganized. The terrible spike from seeing Midoriya carried in had fallen into something steadier, lower, and more dangerous because steady pain was easier to mistake for permission. Both palms remained warm. His right forearm pulsed at intervals beneath his sleeve. No ridging. No thread. No lattice. No activation. He repeated it whenever Recovery Girl asked. No ridging. No thread. No lattice.
No movement. Midoriya lay in the medical space under Thirteen's and Tiger's hands, with Recovery Girl directing remotely in a voice sharp enough to cut through the distance. His body looked wrong in too many places. One arm was worse than the other. His breathing shook. His face was pale beneath blood and dirt. But his eyes opened when Kota made a sound near the edge of the space. That mattered. Alive first. Explain later.
Kota stood beside Mandalay now, one hand buried in her sleeve, the other clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white. He had not cried loudly. He had not spoken except once, when he had whispered "He came" like accusation and proof had become the same thing. Ren had looked away after that. Not his door. But the door had opened into the room anyway. Outside, the forest kept burning. The smoke had thickened at the windows but had not entered after the seals. Yaoyorozu's supports held.
Todoroki's temperature control kept the medical area from overheating as bodies crowded and fear warmed the air. Arai's vent list had become a wall chart. Sano's card remained near it. AIR IS A ROUTE TOO Below it, another card. ALIVE FIRST No one had removed them. That counted as approval or emergency tolerance. Possibly both. Kurose stood near the center table, one hand on the radio, the other on the map Thirteen had taken from the deck. Aizawa's voice cut in and out through static.
Mandalay relayed what she could. Ragdoll counted students. Pixie-Bob shouted from the east, her voice distant and furious through the channel. Tiger moved between medical and field updates with controlled brutality, as if his body wanted to be in six places and had settled for being useful in one at a time. Shinso remained at the inner doorway. Not blocking. Not waiting. Holding the route. Ren watched him only when the windows became too much. Shinso's shoulders were tense, but his feet stayed placed.
One student moved toward the side corridor and stopped when Shinso lifted one hand.
"Medical route stays clear" The student looked at Midoriya.
"I just want to see""Then see from there""But""No" No Quirk. No sarcasm. Just a line. The student stopped. Ren's heat dipped by one degree. The safe zone listened. Then Mandalay stiffened. Every adult in the room noticed before she spoke.
"East smoke increasing. Group Two visual unstable" Bakugo. The name did not need to be said. The room knew. Ren knew. The heat in his palms answered before thought. He reported.
"Bakugo target association rising. Moderate-high palm heat. No image yet. No movement" Recovery Girl's voice snapped from the tablet.
"Hands" Ren lifted them. Still no ridges.
"Stay seated""Yes" Kurose looked toward Mandalay.
"Group Two status" Mandalay's eyes closed.
"Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari. Kirishima and Sero maintaining sight. Kaminari impaired by irritant, still mobile. Smoke thick enough to reduce visibility. Unknown hostile presence directing separation" Directing separation. Ren's chest tightened. Not just attack. Pattern. The enemy was not only trying to hurt them. The enemy was shaping the route. He looked at the map. East clearing. Marked civilian path. Smoke drifting from west and east now. Pixie-Bob holding one segment.
Group Two between earth construct zone and side trail. Lodge northeast access path. No direct staff inside their line yet. He wanted to stand. He did not.
"Question" he said Kurose turned.
"Ask""Is the hostile attempting capture or elimination?" Mandalay's eyes opened. No one spoke for half a second. Then Kurose repeated into the radio.
"East front. Assess hostile intent. Capture or elimination?" Static. A burst of explosion. Kirishima's voice came through, strained and distant.
"They keep trying to cut him off, not hit clean! Smoke moves when he moves!" Sero's voice followed, coughing.
"Something in the smoke! Keeps circling! Not trying to drop us all!" Capture. The word arrived before anyone said it. Ren's heat climbed. Both forearms now. Still no ridging.
"Fragment alignment. Capture pattern. Public target association stronger. Safety-actionable. Smoke is not cover only. Smoke is tool to isolate Bakugo" Kurose's face hardened. Mandalay transmitted immediately.
"Group Two. Treat smoke as hostile positioning tool. Maintain physical visual on Bakugo. Do not pursue voices. Do not separate" Ren added before he could overthink.
"Count contact" Kurose looked at him. He compressed.
"Call: count contact. Verbal confirmation every ten seconds. If no answer, stop movement and regroup" Mandalay transmitted. The hall waited. Static. Then Kirishima's voice.
"Bakugo!" A blast. Bakugo's voice came faint and furious.
"I'm here!" Sero coughed.
"Sero here!" Kaminari, weaker.
"Here!" Kirishima again.
"Kirishima here!" If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it. Ten seconds. Another count. Bakugo cursed during his. Still there. The route held. Ren exhaled. Heat held. No drop. No relief yet. Outside, east smoke shifted against the windows like weather with intent. Inside the smoke, Bakugo Katsuki hated the word here more each time he had to say it. He hated that it worked. He hated that it was necessary.
He hated that the telepathic message had arrived in his head with Akiyama's shape even if Mandalay's voice had carried it. Count contact. Do not separate. Smoke is a tool. He hated that the nerd with scars was right from a balcony again.
"Bakugo!" Kirishima shouted"I said I'm here!"
"Then stay where we can see you!"
"I can see fine!" Sero coughed hard enough to bend.
"No you can't!" The smoke was wrong. Bakugo knew smoke. He made smoke. He understood blast residue, dust, heat, the way a cloud moved after force punched through it. This smoke did not move like that. It slid. It thickened where lines opened. It drew curtains between bodies. It swallowed light and then thinned just enough to show movement where no person should be. Kaminari stumbled behind him.
"Kaminari!" Kirishima shouted"Here! Here, I'm here!" His voice shook. Bakugo's hands sparked. A shape moved inside the smoke to the right. He blasted. The explosion tore a hole through gray. Nothing. Then a laugh came from the left. Not a big laugh. A small one. Amused.
"Temper makes you easy to find" Bakugo turned. Kirishima moved with him. Sero fired tape toward the sound, but the smoke folded and the tape hit a tree trunk.
"Don't chase the voice!" Kirishima shouted"I know!" He did know. That was the infuriating part. His whole body wanted to chase it anyway. A shadow crossed near the civilian route marker. A hand? A mask? A pale shape with too much confidence? Bakugo lifted both palms. Then stopped because the blast line would cut through Sero. Damn route. Damn forest. Damn Akiyama. No. Damn himself if he made the route worse.
"Here!" Kirishima shouted again"Here!" Sero coughed"Here!" Kaminari answered Bakugo spat smoke.
"Here!" A pressure shifted behind him. Too close. Kirishima lunged.
"Behind!" Bakugo fired downward, not backward, launching himself sideways as something snapped shut where his shoulder had been. Not a hand. Not exactly. Something like cloth, like binding, like smoke given fingers. He landed hard. The smoke opened for one second. A figure stood deeper in it. Not tall like the heavy bastard at the ridge. Not loud like a brawler. Coat. Mask? Hard to tell. One hand lifted lazily.
"You are popular" Bakugo grinned with too many teeth.
"Come say that where I can see you" Kirishima grabbed his sleeve.
"No chasing" Bakugo's hands sparked.
"Let go""No""I said let go!"
"Count contact!" Bakugo almost blasted him. Almost. Kirishima's grip held anyway. Sero's tape wrapped around Bakugo's other arm, not restraining him fully, just making a line. Bakugo snarled.
"What the hell!" Sero coughed.
"Visual line!" Kaminari lifted one shaking hand and sparked weakly.
"Please don't blast us for teamwork" The smoke shifted again. Bakugo's rage snapped toward the outside instead of the boys beside him. Good. Useful. He hated that too. Back in the lodge, Mandalay relayed fast.
"Group Two still together. Hostile attempted close contact. Failed. Visual line established by Sero. Kirishima maintaining physical contact" Ren's eyes closed briefly. Good. Then opened. Not enough. The hostile had tried contact. Capture method unknown. Cloth? Compression? Touch? Object? He reported.
"Image attempt. Hand or binding in smoke. Capture vector close contact. Do not let unknown hostile touch Bakugo. Maintain distance and lines. If visual breaks, attack path, not voice" Kurose considered for half a heartbeat. Then pointed to Mandalay.
"Transmit compressed" Mandalay did. Ren's heat rose again. Recovery Girl said "That was one new actionable. Count""One" Kurose added "You have one more before reassess" The room around him kept working. Midoriya groaned in the medical space. Kota flinched. Recovery Girl shouted "Do not move, Midoriya Izuku!" Midoriya stopped. Kota whispered "He's stupid" Tiger, splinting Midoriya's arm with more gentleness than his size suggested, said "Yes" Kota stared. Tiger did not look up.
"Alive first. Insults later" Kota's mouth trembled. Ren looked down at his hands. Not his door. The east radio flared again. Bakugo's voice, sharp through static.
"Stop telling me obvious crap!" Kirishima shouted over him.
"It helped!"
"Shut up!" Sero coughed.
"Smoke right!" Explosion. Kaminari's voice cracked.
"I can't see left!" Mandalay's face tightened.
"Smoke density increasing around them. Pixie-Bob trying to open route. Something is countering visibility" Arai looked up from the vent list.
"Smoke responds to movement patterns?" Ren said "Likely" Arai moved to the map without waiting.
"If smoke thickens around Bakugo movement, then stationary count helps but also marks him by sound" Good. Terrible. Kurose looked at her.
"Alternative?" Arai's eyes moved fast.
"Rotating sound. Others answer first. Bakugo answers last or with movement after ally sound. Prevent voice triangulation" Ren felt the idea click. Strong. He said "Support Arai's call" Kurose nodded.
"Mandalay. Transmit. Contact count order changes. Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari first. Bakugo answers last and moves after ally call if safe. Reduce triangulation" Mandalay transmitted. Ren reported.
"Not my call. Arai systems call. Heat steady" Recovery Girl said "Good distinction" Arai looked startled. Then returned to the map. In the smoke, Bakugo heard the new order in his mind and barked a laugh that hurt his throat.
"They think I'm a radio now?" Kirishima coughed but answered first.
"Kirishima here!" Sero shifted left.
"Sero here!" Kaminari sparked once.
"Kaminari here!" Bakugo moved three steps after Kaminari's voice, changing position before answering.
"Here!" Something snapped at the place he had been. Missed. Bakugo's grin came back. This time, it was real.
"Oh, you hate that" The smoke shifted. Sero fired tape toward the missed motion. It caught something for half a second, then slipped. Kirishima hardened and slammed into the space where the tape pulled. He hit a body. A grunt. Kaminari lifted his hand.
"Clear?" Sero shouted "Small burst! Left of Kirishima, not wide!" Kaminari fired. Not big. Not enough to fry everyone. Enough to make the smoke flash with static. For one second, the hidden figure appeared. Mask. Dark coat. Something round in one hand. Then gone. Bakugo saw the hand. Capture. Not punch. Not kill. Take. His rage went cold.
"You're not trying to beat me" The smoke laughed.
"No" Bakugo's palms sparked.
"You're trying to steal me" No answer. That was answer enough. He blasted low and right, away from his own group, not to chase the voice but to clear a path toward Kirishima's shoulder. The smoke opened long enough for all four boys to see each other. Kirishima was bleeding from his forehead. Sero looked like his lungs hated him. Kaminari's eyes watered from irritant. Bakugo stood in the middle of them and wanted to burn the whole forest clear. Instead, because the universe was humiliating, he shouted "Count!"
Kirishima's grin cut through blood.
"Kirishima here!"
"Sero here!"
"Kaminari here!" Bakugo moved.
"Here!" The lodge received the update three seconds later. Group Two adapted. Hostile contact missed. Temporary visual restored. Capture intent confirmed by Bakugo verbally. Kurose repeated "Capture intent confirmed" The words moved through the main hall like a second alarm. Bakugo was not just in danger because he was loud and strong. He was selected. Ren's heat spread up both forearms. No ridges. No lattice. He stared at the map. Selected. Public target. League? The word floated but did not attach.
He did not know. He would not say what he did not know. But capture changed everything. Kill pressure scattered. Capture pressure narrowed. The target had to remain alive, mobile enough or transferable, isolated enough. Smoke, contact vector, irritant, voice bait. The goal was not to win the fight. It was to create one moment where Bakugo was separated from the count. One moment.
"Status" Kurose said"High heat. Capture pattern. No image. No movement. Analysis strong but actionable" Recovery Girl said "One call available" Ren looked at Arai. She was already looking at the map. Not ownership. Team. Arai said "If capture needs one moment of separation, then objective is not defeating hostile. It is preventing clean extraction vector" Ren nodded.
"Call?" Arai swallowed.
"Group Two should move toward hard boundary. Back to rock wall or earth construct edge. Reduce approach angles. Smoke works worse when there are fewer directions" Ren said "Support. Add: do not enter open clearing" Kurose transmitted through Mandalay.
"Group Two. Do not fight to win. Prevent extraction vector. Move to hard boundary. Reduce approach angles. Do not enter open clearing. Staff moving" The message went out. Call two. Ren leaned back.
"Two calls used. Request reassess" Recovery Girl answered before Kurose.
"You remain seated. No more calls unless direct immediate image with named route. Heat?"
"High but stable. Forearms warm. No ridging""Water" Kenta brought water. Ren took it. His hands shook. Not enough to spill. Almost. Kota watched him from beside Mandalay. Ren realized the boy was watching not Midoriya now, but him. Kota's face was unreadable. Then he said "You're not going?" The question was quiet enough that only those near them heard. Ren looked at him.
"No" Kota's eyes narrowed.
"Your friend is out there""Yes""And you're not going" The words were not accusation exactly. They were study. Ren's throat tightened.
"No""Why?" Because I would become another rescue. Because the room needs routes. Because my body is not the only answer. Because if I run, I break the thing that got me here. Because I promised. Because not going is killing me and that does not make going right. He said "Because going would help the fear more than the rescue" Kota stared. Mandalay's hand remained on his shoulder. The boy looked toward the windows, where smoke pressed gray against sealed glass.
"That's stupid" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Kota's mouth tightened. This time, he did not tell Ren to stop saying maybe. He did not say anything. In the east smoke, Group Two reached the hard boundary. It was not elegant. Kirishima got there first and put his back to a rock face, hardening until his skin caught sparks from falling debris. Sero anchored tape lines across two trees, narrowing approach lanes. Kaminari crouched near the center, shaking but conscious, electricity held low in his palms. Bakugo hated the rock at his back. Hated the reduction.
Hated not chasing. But when the smoke tried to fold around behind him, there was no behind. Only stone. He grinned.
"Problem?" The masked figure stayed hidden. A second shape moved inside the smoke. Then a third. Sero's breathing hitched.
"More than one" Kirishima's eyes widened.
"Count!"
"Kirishima here!"
"Sero here!"
"Kaminari here!" Bakugo moved along the rock face.
"Here!" A blade flashed through the smoke toward Sero's tape. Not the capture hand. Another hostile. Kirishima took the hit on a hardened arm and grunted. Bakugo blasted the ground near the attacker's feet, not the body, throwing dirt and smoke upward. Kaminari fired a short burst through the wet earth near the same path. Sero pulled tape tight. For one moment, the three attackers lost rhythm. Bakugo saw the gap. His instinct screamed forward. Attack. Break. Win. Then he heard the call again in his head.
Do not fight to win. Prevent extraction vector. He hated every adult and Akiyama and the concept of vectors. He stayed. The gap closed. But so did the extraction route. The masked figure withdrew into smoke. Not defeated. Delayed. That mattered. Back in the lodge, Mandalay's voice sharpened.
"Group Two holding hard boundary. Multiple hostiles. Capture attempt stalled. Pixie-Bob nearing visual range" The hall exhaled. Not relief. Not yet. But air. Ren's heat dropped from high to high-moderate.
"Heat decreasing. Group Two stall update. No new image" Recovery Girl said "Good. No more map calls""Accepted" The safe zone continued. Medical space. Midoriya stabilized enough to move to the inner room under Tiger and Thirteen. Kota followed until Mandalay gently stopped him at the threshold. He looked like he might refuse, then looked at Midoriya's face and stopped. Alive first. Explain later. Kurose redirected students by category. Those able to assist with shelter remained assigned.
Those near panic were seated with Ragdoll. Those with combat Quirks who were not cleared to deploy were kept away from windows and doorways because wanting to fight was a route hazard. That sentence went onto Arai's list. Wanting to fight is a route hazard. Sano made a card before anyone could stop him. Kurose let him keep it. East front shifted again. Pixie-Bob reached range. Earth moved outside the windows, the mountain itself answering her fury.
Not close enough to shake the lodge hard, but close enough that everyone felt the ground choose a side. Mandalay transmitted her orders in bursts. Aizawa remained west. Tiger returned briefly to the field after handing Midoriya to medical support. Ragdoll's search pattern began to map students through terrain. Thirteen held the lodge perimeter. Then Mandalay flinched. Not from east. From somewhere deeper. Her hand went to her temple. Her face changed in a way Ren had not seen yet. Blank. Then afraid.
"Mandalay?" Kurose asked No answer. Ragdoll, across the hall, turned toward the door as if hearing something no one else could hear. Then she stopped. Her eyes widened.
"Something" The windows went white-gray for one second. Not smoke against glass. A flash. Impact without sound. Then the radio screamed static. Every channel at once. Ren's palms flared. Not heat first. Cold. Then heat. An image hit him sideways. A forest path empty where someone had been. A hand over a mouth. Search broken. Coordinates gone dark. A woman's eyes wide in shadow. A laugh made of many voices or maybe none. No names. No stable face. But one fact. A staff route had been cut.
"Image fragment. Staff disappearance or capture. Search network disruption. Female staff? Ragdoll or Mandalay association. Low-confidence high-danger. Check all Pussycats status now" Kurose's radio was already in hand.
"Staff count. Now" Static answered. Tiger.
"Tiger active" Pixie-Bob.
"Pixie-Bob active east" Mandalay, voice strained.
"Mandalay active lodge-side" Silence. Ragdoll. The hall turned. She had been by the far wall. She was not there. For one second, no one understood. Then Kenta said "Ragdoll was there" Arai's systems list fell from her hand. Sano whispered "No" Kurose's face went cold.
"Ragdoll missing from hall. Last visual?" Several students spoke at once. Shinso cut through them.
"One at a time! Last clear visual by window list. Thirty seconds ago. After static flash" Arai caught herself.
"Window list area. North side. No door alarm" Thirteen moved to the north side. No broken window. No open door. No visible breach. Mandalay's face went white.
"Ragdoll" Her voice broke on the name. Ren's heat rose high. No ridges. No movement. But the safe zone had been touched. Not by smoke through windows. Not by a door. A person had vanished from inside the route. The room was no longer only shelter. It was a target. Kurose's voice became iron.
"Full internal lockdown. No one moves alone. Thirteen, perimeter. Aizawa, lodge possible breach. Ragdoll missing" Aizawa's reply came through static and rage.
"On route" Shinso stepped back from the doorway and shifted his stance. Not enough. Not safe. But ready. Kota pressed closer to Mandalay. Midoriya, barely conscious in the inner room, made a sound. Ren sat in the chair with burning hands and understood too late that smoke had never been the only route. Air was a route. Doors were routes. Fear was a route. And now, somehow, absence had become one too. He reported because the structure needed the truth even when the truth was impossible.
"Status red-edge. Ragdoll missing. Heat high. No lattice. No movement. Safe zone compromised" Kurose looked at him. Then at the hall. Then at every student in it.
"Yes" she said "It is" The safe zone listened again. This time, it listened inward.
