Chương 128: Toshinori, Not All Might

Toshinori Yagi looked smaller in daylight. Ren knew that was not fair. Daylight did that to injured people. It removed the mercy of dramatic smoke, ruined streets, broadcast static, and the kind of distance that let a body become a symbol before anyone counted the cost. Daylight entered hospital rooms without respect for mythology.
It touched oxygen tubes, thin wrists, bruised skin, sunken cheeks, medical tape, and the awkward angle of a blanket tucked by someone too angry to be gentle and too frightened not to be precise. Daylight did not know what to do with legends. So it showed the man. Toshinori lay propped in a U. A. medical bed with three pillows, one monitor, two IV lines, and Recovery Girl's written threat taped to the bedside table.
NO SPEECHES LONGER THAN ONE MINUTENO SYMBOLIC HANDOFFSNO APOLOGIES BEFORE BREATHINGNO STANDINGNO SMILING FOR MORALE IF IT CAUSES COUGHING Someone had added a smaller line below it in Gran Torino's handwriting. NO DYING EITHER, IDIOT Ren stared at the sign through the secured screen in R-2.
"Good sign" Toshinori's mouth twitched.
"Which part?"
"Gran Torino's addition is direct""He has a gift" Recovery Girl's voice came from Toshinori's room, sharp enough to cross the secured audio without distortion.
"His gift is being alive despite poor personality construction" Gran Torino's voice came from somewhere out of frame.
"I heard that""You were meant to" Ren sat in his medical chair at ten degrees plus rebellion. That was what Recovery Girl had called it. His elevation had been raised because lying flat after integration made his ribs stiffen and his Repair Scaffold function interpret stiffness as an invitation. The new chair position kept his breathing cleaner. Recovery Girl had agreed to it under protest, which meant it was medically correct and emotionally offensive. Hana sat to his left with tea she had not drunk.
Daichi sat to his right with a notebook and no umbrella because Recovery Girl had banned Bentaro from official inter-patient communication after the umbrella's inspection tag received a second unauthorized annotation. Kurose stood near the door. Aizawa leaned against the far wall, present because any conversation involving Ren, Toshinori, Izuku, training, or the word future had become a structural hazard. Recovery Girl occupied both rooms in spirit, but physically she was with Toshinori. Dr.
Seno remained in the corridor outside R-2 monitoring the medical feed because Ren had asked not to have another tablet visible in the room. The screen showed Toshinori, not All Might. That had been the first rule. No hero form. No public voice. No smile for the comfort of children who already knew enough to be hurt by pretending. Toshinori had agreed. Then coughed blood into a cloth ten minutes before the call and nearly lost call privileges.
Recovery Girl had allowed the call anyway because she was merciless, not cruel. Ren looked at him. The man who had come back. Thin. bruised. alive. Toshinori looked back. The silence stretched. Not empty. Full. Finally, Toshinori said "You look better than I expected" Recovery Girl snapped "Terrible opening" Ren looked at the monitor display near his chair.
"Vitals disagree but appreciate optimism" Toshinori's weak smile deepened. Then faded before it could cost him. Good. He was learning. Ren noticed. Toshinori noticed Ren noticing. That made the room more honest than comfortable. Toshinori breathed slowly.
"I heard about yesterday's test" Ren looked down at his left wrist. The pale line rested faint under the skin, quiet for now.
"Not a hero test""I was told by three different signs""Reliable signs""Were they?"
"Mostly" Aizawa muttered "They were excellent" Ren did not turn.
"They were hostile""Good signs often are" Toshinori looked from Ren to Aizawa on the small side view.
"I see teaching has continued without mercy" Aizawa said "Mercy is not in the syllabus yet" Recovery Girl said "It was removed for safety" Ren almost smiled. His ribs warned him. He stopped. Toshinori saw that too.
"You stopped" Ren's throat tightened at the accuracy.
"Yes""I was told that was the important part" Ren looked at Aizawa. Aizawa looked unimpressed with being correct again. Ren said "They keep saying that""Are they wrong?"
"No""Does that make it easier?" Ren thought.
"No" Toshinori nodded.
"Good" Ren blinked.
"Good?" Toshinori's eyes softened.
"Sometimes difficult truths becoming easier too quickly means we have sanded the truth down until it stops cutting where it needs to" The room went quiet. Recovery Girl's voice came after a beat.
"You have been awake too long if you are becoming articulate" Toshinori's mouth twitched.
"I will deteriorate immediately""See that you do" Ren looked at him. The sign said no speeches longer than one minute. But this was not a speech. Not yet. Maybe that was why it reached him. Toshinori shifted slightly and winced. The monitor beside his bed objected. Recovery Girl made a sound like a storm cloud filing a complaint.
"I am fine""No one asked for fiction" Toshinori stilled. Ren watched him obey. Not instantly. But fully. That mattered. All Might had always seemed like someone who moved because the world needed motion. Toshinori, in daylight, had to learn that stillness could be obedience too. Ren said "You stopped too" Toshinori looked at him.
"After Kamino?"
"During. More than once" Gran Torino's voice came from off-screen.
"He finally listened to someone with a functional survival instinct" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"I will remind you I won" Gran Torino said "And then collapsed like laundry" Recovery Girl said "Laundry is less medically expensive" Ren's mouth twitched again. This time the ribs allowed it. Small mercy. Toshinori opened his eyes.
"I did stop" he said quietly "Not perfectly. Not early enough for Recovery Girl's liking""Nothing is early enough for Recovery Girl's liking" Ren said"Correct" both Recovery Girls seemed to say from both rooms, though only one existed. Toshinori continued "But yes. I stopped when the fight offered a prettier death than a messier return" Ren looked down. The sentence went under the skin, beneath Graft Lattice, beneath pale lines and old scar memory, into the place where Kamino still burned.
A prettier death than a messier return. Ren breathed.
"Messier return counts" Toshinori's eyes shone.
"Yes" The screen blurred for a second because Ren's eyes did. He blinked it away. Hana's hand moved toward his hair and paused. Ren nodded. She touched him. The room did not call attention to it. That was kindness. Toshinori watched the movement with an expression Ren did not know how to name. Grief. relief. envy. love. something older than all of them. Then Toshinori said "I need your help" Every adult in both rooms sharpened. Recovery Girl's voice became dangerous.
"With breathing? Excellent. Start there" Toshinori gave her a faint look. If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"With teaching" Kurose shifted near the door. Aizawa's eyes narrowed. Ren went very still. Toshinori noticed.
"I am not asking for fragments""Good" Kurose said"I am not asking for predictions""Good" Aizawa said"I am not asking you to become an adviser because All Might listened once and survived" Endeavor's shadow was not in the room, but Ren felt the shape of that exact wrong request somewhere in the future. Toshinori's voice softened.
"I am asking because Toshinori does not know how to train children without the Symbol's habits getting in the way" No one spoke. The sentence hung between them, bare and humiliating and alive. Toshinori looked at the blanket over his own thin body.
"I taught through example for too long. I smiled, ran forward, endured, and expected my students to learn courage from that. Young Midoriya learned too well" Ren's throat tightened. Toshinori continued "Young Bakugo learned other things. Todoroki, Uraraka, Iida, all of them. They look at us and turn what they see into rules for themselves, even when we never meant to write those rules" Recovery Girl was silent. That was rare. Toshinori looked back at Ren.
"You see rules when people think they are only acting" Ren breathed.
"That sounds like a dangerous compliment""It is meant as a dangerous request""Better" Aizawa said "State the request cleanly" Toshinori nodded.
"How do I help train the next generation without teaching them to spend themselves the way I did?" The question entered the room and did not fit through any easy door. Ren closed his eyes. He thought of Izuku breaking bone because pain meant the gift had been used seriously enough. He thought of Bakugo standing instead of running, furious at a room because the enemy had made him target and not target, prize and missed prize, public and powerless. He thought of Shinso afraid of relief when he said yes.
He thought of Todoroki watching Endeavor inherit a summit that had become a question. He thought of Uraraka's hands shaking around rescue. Iida saying motion was not automatically rescue. Mina laughing so she would not fall apart. Kirishima becoming a wall with hair because someone had to. He thought of All Might pointing. He thought of Toshinori coming back. Then he opened his eyes.
"You spent years teaching them how to run toward danger" Toshinori looked at him.
"Yes" Ren's voice was quiet.
"Then spend the next years teaching them how to come back" Toshinori's face changed. The monitor beside him beeped faster. Recovery Girl glared at it, then at him.
"Do not make me regret allowing nouns" Toshinori did not look away from Ren.
"How?" Ren looked at his left wrist. The answer was not one answer. That was the point.
"Stop praising the part that comes back bleeding first" Toshinori flinched. Small. Violent in its smallness. Ren continued before he could apologize.
"Midoriya does not break himself because he ignores pain" Toshinori's hand tightened on the blanket.
"He breaks himself because pain feels like proof that he used the gift correctly" The room went still. Aizawa looked down. Kurose closed her eyes. Hana's hand froze in Ren's hair. Daichi inhaled once and did not exhale for too long. On screen, Toshinori's face looked like someone had touched a wound and named it before he knew it was bleeding. Ren swallowed.
"That is not all your fault" Toshinori laughed once without humor, then stopped before Recovery Girl could kill the call.
"No. But it is mine to answer" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"I praised his heart""He has one""I praised his courage""He has that too""I praised his willingness to move""Yes" Toshinori opened his eyes.
"And I did not praise stopping enough" Ren looked at Aizawa. Aizawa's face said nothing. His silence said yes. Ren said "Most people do not know stopping can be heroic" Recovery Girl said "I have been telling idiots this for decades" Gran Torino added "She has. We ignored her. That was our first mistake""First?" Recovery Girl asked"Top hundred""Acceptable" Toshinori looked tired now. But not less alive. Maybe more.
"What do I teach Young Midoriya first?" Ren closed his eyes again. Izuku needed so much that the question became unfair. He needed physical control, quirk progression, emotional disentanglement, mentorship, friends, sleep, less guilt, more technical training, better language, and a world that did not look at All Might's empty place and see one green-haired boy as the replacement pillar. No one could teach all of that first. So first had to be smaller.
"Teach him that using One For All correctly means he can still describe his body afterward" Aizawa's eyes shifted toward him. Ren continued "Body map. After every exercise. Not just damage report. Body map. Where pain is. Where numbness is. What he can move. What he cannot. What he is tempted to hide" Toshinori listened like a starving man receiving instructions for food. Ren said "If he cannot describe the body, he did not control the gift. The gift controlled the moment" Toshinori breathed.
"The gift controlled the moment""Yes""Good" Recovery Girl snapped "Do not say good while looking like you discovered a new way to torture a child with paperwork" Toshinori almost smiled. Ren said "No shame if map is bad" Aizawa nodded once. Important. Ren continued "If he learns that bad map means failure, he will lie" Toshinori's eyes sharpened.
"Yes""So bad map means training data. Not punishment. Not disappointment. Not sorry face" Gran Torino muttered "He does have a powerful sorry face" Ren said "Weaponized" Toshinori exhaled something dangerously close to laughter. Recovery Girl made a warning sound. He controlled it. Progress. Ren turned his head slightly toward Aizawa.
"Bakugo needs different" Aizawa said "Obviously" Ren looked back at Toshinori.
"Do not make him talk about fear by calling it fear first" Bakugo would explode on principle.
"Then how?"
"Control variables" Aizawa's mouth twitched. Ren continued "Ask what he thinks the enemy wanted from him. Then ask what he can control that the enemy cannot use" Toshinori looked toward the ceiling.
"Public target""Yes""His anger""Yes""His movement""Yes" Ren breathed through a rib ache.
"His restraint, if he learns it is not being benched" Aizawa said "That will be unpleasant" Ren's mouth moved.
"He is unpleasant""Also true" Toshinori nodded slowly.
"And Shinso?" Ren looked toward the door even though Shinso was not there.
"Do not praise Brainwashing first" Kurose's eyes opened. Ren continued "Praise the moment he chooses not to use it when everyone expects him to" Aizawa said "Good" Kurose nodded.
"Yes" Ren said "If people only praise him when he controls someone, he will learn consent is a luxury other people enjoy when the room is calm" That sentence made the room colder. Toshinori's face hardened.
"I understand" Ren was not sure he did. Not fully. But he wanted to. That counted as beginning.
"Todoroki?" Toshinori asked Ren's body went very still. The wrong door shifted. Flames. ice. a kitchen. a child. a brother-shaped absence. Endeavor's shadow over a house. A name not to say. Kurose noticed immediately.
"Door?" Ren nodded once.
"Not mine" Toshinori's expression changed with pain and understanding.
"Then not that" Ren breathed.
"Safe part?" Aizawa straightened slightly. Ren considered.
"Todoroki needs people to stop treating his father's role as his weather" Kurose's eyes sharpened. Toshinori repeated "His weather""Yes" Ren looked at the blanket.
"Endeavor becoming Number One will change the world. But Shoto should not have to become the world's thermometer for his father's development" Daichi made a quiet sound. Hana's fingers moved gently through Ren's hair. Toshinori looked deeply tired.
"You see much""Too much sometimes""Then thank you for stopping there" Ren looked at him. Good. He had understood that part. Recovery Girl looked at the clock.
"One minute" Toshinori sighed.
"Yes" Ren blinked.
"You obeyed quickly""I am growing as a person" Recovery Girl said "Do not become arrogant about basic survival" Toshinori inclined his head. Ren felt the call nearing its end and panic moved in the small space left behind. Not full panic. The kind of urgency that said if the screen went dark before the important thing was said, something would be lost.
"Toshinori" The name made the room still. Not All Might. Not sir. Not Symbol. Toshinori. The man on the screen looked at him with wet eyes.
"Yes?" Ren swallowed.
"Do not build the new generation around replacing you" Toshinori's face twisted. Ren continued "Build it so no one has to be you again" The monitor in Toshinori's room beeped. Recovery Girl opened her mouth. Toshinori lifted one thin hand by less than an inch. She stopped. Ren said "One pillar breaks. A structure holds" Toshinori's eyes closed. For a moment, the man in the hospital bed looked older than daylight had made him, and younger too, because grief sometimes removed the armor age had grown around it.
Then he nodded.
"One structure" Ren nodded back.
"Many routes back" The call ended there because Recovery Girl cut it with the precision of an executioner and the mercy of someone who knew ending before collapse was part of training. The screen went dark. Ren stared at it. His chest hurt. His wrist hurt. His shoulder hurt. Pain present. Good. He had called him Toshinori. The world had not ended. In Toshinori's room, the silence after the call landed differently. Gran Torino sat with arms crossed, eyes suspiciously fixed on the wall.
Recovery Girl checked Toshinori's monitor and pretended she did not see the tear that slipped into his hair.
"You exceeded emotional density limits" Toshinori's voice was rough.
"I apologize""Bad start" He swallowed.
"No sorry before breathing""Better" Gran Torino cleared his throat.
"The kid is right" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Yes""You were always a terrible training model" Toshinori opened one eye.
"Always?"
"You smiled while bleeding. Children are stupid. They copied the bleeding" Recovery Girl pointed at Gran Torino.
"Accurate enough to avoid punishment" Toshinori stared at the ceiling.
"Teach them how to come back" Recovery Girl adjusted the blanket.
"You could start by doing it yourself consistently" Toshinori gave a faint smile.
"I intend to try""Trying is not medical compliance""Then I intend to comply" Gran Torino looked physically pained by the sentence.
"I hate hearing you learn" Recovery Girl snorted.
"Then suffer" Toshinori's breathing slowed. Ren's words moved through him like a new curriculum written on old bones. Body map. No praise for bleeding first. Bad map is data. Do not teach Shinso that consent is calm-weather luxury. Do not make Todoroki the thermometer of Endeavor's role. Do not build replacements. Build structure. Many routes back. For years, Toshinori had imagined teaching the next generation as passing a torch. A clean image. A flame handed from one person to another. Bright. noble. simple.
Now the image looked wrong. A torch still left one hand responsible for not letting the dark return. A structure was harder. Less beautiful in a headline. More durable. Maybe that was what came after the Symbol. Not a brighter pillar. A building that did not ask any child to hold the roof alone. In R-2, Ren's post-call map check took longer than usual. Recovery Girl stood beside him.
"Map""R-2. chair. screen dark. Hana. Daichi. Kurose. Aizawa. Recovery Girl. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. tired. sad. okay""Pain absence?"
"No""Graft activity?"
"Low. wrist gate tried. stopped""Good" Ren looked at her.
"I used useful words""Yes""Was that bad?" Kurose answered before Recovery Girl could.
"No. You used them with boundaries" Aizawa said "You stopped before becoming a resource" Ren leaned back.
"That should not be hard" Recovery Girl's face softened and sharpened at once.
"It is hard because adults keep rewarding the opposite" Hana looked toward the dark screen.
"Then we stop" Daichi nodded.
"Starting here" Ren closed his eyes.
"Starting small" Aizawa said "Good training principle" Ren opened one eye.
"Do not make my exhaustion pedagogical" Aizawa almost smiled.
"Too late" The rest of the afternoon became deliberately boring. Boring was policy now. Ren ate. Slept for twenty minutes. Woke hungry. Drank. Objected to broth. Lost. Ran body map drills. Practiced feeling the wrist gate without letting it widen. Failed once. Stopped twice. Slept again. No Hero Course discussion. No license discussion. No Shock. No Endeavor. No future beyond next meal. Except the future had already entered through the call and sat quietly in the corner, no longer looking entirely like a threat.
Toshinori, not All Might, needed help teaching. Ren, not an asset, had thoughts worth offering. That did not make him responsible for saving everyone. That was the line they would have to keep drawing. Again and again. One, two, three. A line beneath. Here. Evening brought an approved written message from Toshinori, because Recovery Girl had banned another call and Toshinori had apparently decided compliance could be weaponized politely. Kurose read it aloud after checking for excessive symbolism. She found some.
Recovery Girl edited two adjectives. The final message said: Ren, I will begin with body maps. I will not ask Midoriya to prove the gift by breaking for it. I will remember that stopping can be instruction, not failure. I will need help again, but not at the cost of your own map. Toshinori Ren listened once. Then asked Kurose to read it again. She did. Hana cried quietly. Daichi looked at the ceiling. Aizawa stared at the wall like the wall had done something to deserve suspicion.
Recovery Girl muttered "Acceptable" Ren looked down at his left wrist. The pale line flickered. Not from pain this time. Something else. Not hope. Hope was too bright and too careless. Possibility, maybe. Careful possibility. He whispered "Not at the cost of my own map" Kurose folded the note.
"That part matters""Yes" Aizawa said "It becomes your condition too" Ren looked at him.
"If you advise training, consult, observe, correct language, or help Toshinori with Midoriya, you do not do it at the cost of your own map" Ren breathed.
"Student condition""Yes" Ren nodded. The word student no longer hit only as grief. It still hurt. But now it had edges he could touch. Later, after the room dimmed again, Toshinori lay awake in the other medical room and asked Gran Torino for a notebook. Gran Torino stared at him.
"You are medically banned from speeches, not handwriting" Recovery Girl, from the doorway, said "He is banned from heroic handwriting if it raises blood pressure" Toshinori lifted one thin hand.
"Training notes" Gran Torino looked at Recovery Girl. She sighed like the universe had failed her again.
"Five minutes" Toshinori took the notebook. His hand shook around the pen. At the top of the first page, he wrote: HOW TO COME BACK Then he stopped. Not because he had finished. Because Ren had been right. Stopping was where training began.
