The scan was not cancelled. That was the first thing Ren learned after breakfast, and he hated that it made him feel relieved. The room R-2 had woken under soft light, sealed glass, bolted tea, and the quiet authority of the wall panel above the desk. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE Ren had read it before sitting up. Then he had looked at the door. The room was not in charge. The door still had opinions. Bentaro's laminated portrait remained on the shelf, Hana's scarf bright around the umbrella handle.
The family photo sat beside it, eleven-year-old Ren still angry at cartilage, still unaware that one day adults would need a meeting to decide how to move him through a hallway. The approved tea labels remained above the fixed counter. BARLEY, UNFORTUNATELY Ren chose barley out of spite. Against whom, he did not know. When Kurose arrived, she noticed the cup immediately.
"Bad tea?"
"Strategic tea""Your mother would call that denial""She is not here" Kurose looked toward the secured call tablet.
"She is extremely reachable" Ren took another sip.
"It remains strategic" Kurose's mouth twitched, but the folder in her hand kept the room from becoming light. She sat at the fixed desk.
"Dr. Seno still recommends the baseline scan" Ren looked at the cup.
"Today?"
"Tomorrow morning. Ten o'clock. Same intended route. No route changes after freeze. If anything changes, the movement aborts. Not adjusts. Aborts" Aizawa's influence was visible in the word aborts. Ren nodded.
"Lift B?"
"Yes""Sub-basement two?"
"Yes""Cross-corridor?"
"Yes""Scan time?"
"Twenty-two minutes if you remain medically boring""I have been trying""Mixed success historically" He almost smiled. Almost. Kurose placed the folder on the table but did not open it yet.
"The false notification yesterday changed the security plan. It did not cancel the medical need" Ren stared at the tea.
"Need is an ugly word now""Yes""They tried to use it""Yes""And we are still using it""Because if they can poison every useful word, they do not need to take you to win" The sentence stayed in the room. Ren looked up. Kurose's face was tired. Not uncertain. Just tired. He asked "Do you think it is safe?"
"No" That helped because it was honest. She continued "I think it is necessary enough to make unsafe worth managing. I think we have reduced the risk as much as we can without pretending you do not need care. I think delaying forever teaches the wrong lesson""What lesson?"
"That the only answer to danger is becoming less alive" Ren looked toward the shelf. The family photo did not answer. Good. It had already done enough. He set the cup down.
"I want the scan" Kurose nodded once.
"Then we plan around your yes. Not over it" His palms stayed cool. That felt like consent, which was irrational and therefore annoying. The guardian briefing happened an hour later. Hana and Daichi came in through the checked door with no objects except Bentaro, who was permitted to remain outside in the hall under a level of supervision that suggested the umbrella had joined a witness protection program. Hana sat across from Ren and looked at the scan consent form like it had insulted her ancestors.
Daichi read every line. Twice. Dr. Seno explained the scan again, this time without diagrams at first because Hana had asked to hear it in "words that do not make my son sound like a museum specimen" Dr. Seno accepted the correction without flinching.
"We need to see what his connective tissue, vascular response, and autonomic stress pattern look like when he is not in active crisis. That gives us a baseline. Without it, future symptoms are harder to interpret" Hana asked "Will it hurt?"
"No""Will it trigger his Quirk?"
"It should not""Should not is not no""No. It is not no" Hana nodded tightly. Better an honest should not than a lie. Daichi tapped the form with one finger.
"No route changes after freeze" Kurose said "Correct""If the lift breaks?"
"Aizawa cancels the movement""If a staff member says another route is faster?"
"Aizawa cancels the staff member" Recovery Girl, near the wall, snorted. Daichi looked at Aizawa, who stood by the door.
"Is that accurate?" Aizawa said "Close enough" Hana looked at Ren.
"What do you want?" That question had become sharper over the last few days. Less decorative. Less parental in the old way. More dangerous because now they all knew that answering could change actual procedures. Ren looked at the form.
"I want the scan" Hana's eyes closed. Not because she disagreed. Because she had hoped the truth would feel different. When she opened them, she asked "Because you think you owe them data?"
"No""Because you want to prove you can move?"
"No""Because you are tired of the room?" Ren hesitated.
"That is part of it" Hana leaned forward.
"Then say the other part louder" Ren breathed.
"Because I want a better map of my own body before someone else decides what it means" Daichi's face changed. Hana's too. Recovery Girl muttered "Good answer" Ren looked at her. She raised a hand.
"Trustworthy. Whatever" Kurose wrote nothing down. Maybe because the sentence belonged to him first. Hana signed. Slowly. Daichi signed after her. Then Ren signed with the soft pen, pressing carefully because even the pen seemed to be under supervision. His signature looked almost normal. That made it stranger. After the meeting, Hana asked to touch his face. He said yes. She held his cheek with one warm hand and looked at him like she was trying to memorize a version of him no scan could store.
"I hate tomorrow""I know""I support tomorrow""I know""I hate supporting tomorrow""That seems reasonable" Daichi stood beside them.
"Family position accepted" Hana looked at him.
"Do not make my anguish sound like a committee vote""Marriage" Ren smiled. Hana's thumb moved once against his cheek.
"You come back to this room" It was not a request. Not exactly. Ren answered anyway.
"Yes" The word felt too small. Hana heard that too. She leaned closer.
"No heroic interpretations. No symbolic route. No becoming data in a hallway. You go, you scan, you come back, you complain about tea" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Daichi nodded.
"Good. Barley deserves accountability" The rest of the day became an exercise in not letting tomorrow swallow today. Kurose called it normal schedule preservation. Mina called it anxiety tapas. Kaminari called it pre-boss-room filler content. Aizawa told them all to stop naming things. Nobody stopped. Ren spent twenty minutes in the common room with Shinso, Uraraka, Todoroki, Iida, and Asui. The wall-mounted screen remained off because nobody trusted news.
The oversized table game had been changed from chess to something that looked like checkers but had rules modified by Present Mic during a sleep-deprived committee meeting. Nobody understood it. Everyone accused everyone else of cheating. Iida tried to reconstruct the rules through first principles and nearly achieved enlightenment. Shinso moved one oversized piece diagonally. Iida said "I do not believe that movement is legal" Shinso said "It felt legal""That is not a rule""It is now" Todoroki studied the board.
"I think the orange pieces are emotionally unstable" Uraraka blinked.
"What does that mean?" If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"I do not know. Present Mic wrote it here" He pointed at the fixed rule panel. Rule four did, in fact, say ORANGE PIECES ARE EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE. Asui stared at it.
"Maybe they move when criticized" Kaminari, who was not in the room but had apparently contributed remotely, would have been proud. Ren laughed quietly. It felt good. That made him anxious. Shinso noticed.
"You're doing that thing" Ren looked at him.
"What thing?"
"Enjoying something and then acting like enjoyment signed a villain contract" Uraraka's mouth tightened with sympathy. Ren leaned back.
"I am trying not to""Try more casually" Shinso said"That sentence has no content""It has vibes" Iida looked pained.
"Vibes are not a regulatory framework" Asui said "They may be today" Todoroki moved an orange piece. Everyone stared. He looked up.
"It felt emotionally unstable" Ren laughed again. This time, he let it finish. The room did not punish him for it. That was worth noticing. Later, Midoriya sent an audio message. His voice was still weak, but less distant.
"Recovery Girl said I'm not allowed to ask for medical details, so I'm asking a non-medical question. Are you scared about tomorrow?" Ren listened to it twice. Then recorded back.
"Yes. Are you scared about healing?" He hesitated. Then added "That sounded like a Recovery Girl question. Sorry" Kurose, reviewing the message, looked at him.
"You may send it" Midoriya's reply came in the evening, typed by Inko. Yes. He says yes. Also he tried to apologize for being scared. I stopped him. He says tell Akiyama you are both bad at this. Ren smiled at the screen. He sent back: Confirmed. Bakugo's message arrived two minutes later. I heard you're getting scanned. Ren stared.
"Internal observers" he muttered Kurose, near the desk, looked up.
"What?"
"Bakugo knows""Of course he does" Ren typed: Yes. The answer came fast. Don't let the machine win. Ren typed: It is not a fight. Bakugo replied: Weak attitude. Ren typed: I will defeat it diagnostically. There was no answer for three minutes. Then: Better. Ren saved that too. Night before the scan did not feel like night. It felt like a waiting room wearing darkness. Ren lay in bed under dimmed lights, hands open over the blanket, listening to the building. R-2 hummed differently from the medical suite.
Less sterile. More like a room trying not to breathe too loudly. The request button glowed faintly near the bed. The wall panel remained visible in the low light. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE Tomorrow, he would leave it. For twenty-two minutes of scan and nine minutes of route and however long procedures took around the edges. A necessary yes. The phrase made his stomach twist. He turned his head toward the shelf. Bentaro watched. The family photo watched. No, not watched. Stayed. That was different. Ren slept badly.
But he slept. At 08: 00, the route froze. The words appeared on the secured panel in R-2 after Kurose entered and confirmed them aloud. ROUTE FREEZE ACTIVER-2 TO IMAGING SUITE B2NO CHANGES WITHOUT ABORT Ren read it. Then read it again. Aizawa arrived at 08: 10 and inspected the panel as if he expected it to apologize.
"Good" Ren said "Trustworthy" Aizawa looked at him.
"No. This one is good" Kurose said "He has categories" Aizawa grunted. Recovery Girl arrived at 08: 20, took Ren's temperature, pulse, blood pressure, palm temperature, and patience.
"Vitals acceptable. Patience low but functional" Ren said "That is not a vital sign""For you it is" Dr. Seno arrived at 08: 40 and explained the scan one final time. No pain. No activation intended. No restraints beyond standard positioning. Emergency stop word available. Ren chose barley as the stop word because he wanted the tea to suffer with him. Recovery Girl approved it immediately. Aizawa said "Ridiculous" Kurose said "Memorable" Hana and Daichi appeared on secured call at 09: 00.
Hana's first words were "Warm or cold?" Ren looked at his hands.
"Cool" Daichi asked "Chair?"
"Acceptable""Route?"
"Frozen" Hana breathed out.
"You come back" Ren nodded.
"I come back" Daichi leaned closer.
"Do not let the scan machine develop political power""I will defeat it diagnostically" Hana stared.
"That sounds like Bakugo" Ren said "Unfortunately" Daichi looked proud for reasons that concerned everyone. At 09: 55, the door opened. The hallway beyond R-2 stood empty, checked, waiting. Ren stepped out. Kurose walked on his left. Aizawa ahead. Recovery Girl behind. Dr. Seno beside the nurse. Two security officers at distance. Hakamata monitored from control. Nezu observed from an internal feed.
All Might remained away from the route because his presence created attention, but Ren knew he was nearby in the way the building seemed to brace differently. The orange cat mural watched from the far wall. Professor Scream looked exactly as qualified as everyone else. Shinso stood at the final allowed point before the route started. Not entering. Not following. Just there, hands visible. Ren paused. Aizawa said "Ten seconds" Shinso looked at Ren.
"You know the plan?"
"Yes""You know the fake plan?"
"Abort""You know the machine is probably less scary than Recovery Girl?" Recovery Girl said "Correct" Ren almost smiled. Shinso's voice lowered.
"Come back and complain badly" Ren nodded.
"I will" Shinso stepped back. No big gesture. No ritual. Just space given and kept. Ren walked. Lift B opened when called. Empty. Checked. Correct. He entered. The doors closed. His palms warmed. He said "Door heat. No image" Kurose said "Heard" The lift moved. Opened. Cross-corridor. No supply carts. No staff movement. No loose equipment. No signs. No dropped screw. No convenient update. No alternate route. Aizawa's eyes moved constantly.
Kurose's posture remained loose in a way that meant she was ready to become very difficult. Recovery Girl's cane tapped once every few steps, not because she needed the rhythm, but because the hallway did. They reached imaging suite B2 at 10: 04. Four minutes late. No one adjusted the plan. The suite was colder than R-2. Wider. Too white. The scanner sat in the center like a machine designed by people who thought lying down inside a ring was a reasonable request. It was not a standard MRI. Dr.
Seno called it a layered fascia resonance scanner, which sounded fake enough that Ren had looked at her until she admitted that most medical names were apologies to funding committees. The scan bed was fixed. The ring was open on both sides. The room had a control booth behind reinforced glass. No loose objects. No metal. No pockets. No dignity, but that had not been listed.
Ren changed behind a privacy screen into scan-safe clothing that tied without loose cords and somehow made him feel more exposed than being shirtless would have. He stepped out with his arms folded before remembering that folding arms had become one more visible thing people read. Recovery Girl looked him over.
"Cold?"
"A little""Fear?"
"Yes""Pain?"
"No""Regret?"
"About barley as stop word?"
"Acceptable" Dr. Seno smiled gently.
"You can stop at any point""I know" Aizawa stood near the door inside the imaging room, eyes uncovered, scarf loose. Kurose stayed near the control booth door. Recovery Girl stood close enough to be the first person Ren saw if he turned his head. Dr. Seno sat behind the glass with the technician, both visible. Ren lay on the scan bed. The surface was not comfortable. Of course. Medical necessity hated comfort. The ring moved into position around his torso and arms, not touching him.
Soft supports held his elbows in place without pinning them. A monitor line attached to his wrist with a broad soft band. Another around his chest. Nothing small. Nothing tight enough to feel like restraint. Still, his breath changed. Recovery Girl leaned into view.
"Look at me" He did.
"Stop word?"
"Barley""Correct. Terrible. Continue" He breathed. The scanner hummed. At first, nothing happened. Then the machine found him. Not in a mystical sense. Not like a Quirk awakening or a fragment catching on memory. It was worse because it was ordinary. Layers of his body became data on screens he could not see. Tissue stiffness. Heat distribution. vascular response. inflammation traces. old scars. deep fascia tension.
The machine read what pain had written and did so without caring whether the handwriting had been cruel. His palms warmed. He said "Palms warm. Scanner awareness. No image" Recovery Girl said "Heard" The ring passed slowly. Dr. Seno's voice came through the speaker.
"Baseline pass one. Good signal. No activation markers" Ren closed his eyes. The hum became a room inside the room. He tried not to think of Garaki. He did not know the man by name in the way memory sometimes tried to offer, and he refused to chase the shape. Doctor. Old hands. Lab light. No. Not his door. Not now. The scan continued. Pass two. Deep connective tissue. Pass three. Stress response. Pass four. Old scar mapping. Dr. Seno's voice remained even, but once it caught. Barely. Ren noticed.
So did Recovery Girl.
"What?" Ren asked Dr. Seno paused.
"Nothing dangerous""That is not nothing" Aizawa said "Answer" Dr. Seno's voice softened.
"The inheritance model is supported. Strongly. Your tissue response shows layered stress detection and load-stabilization patterns. It is not active right now. It is baseline architecture" Baseline architecture. His body had become a building metaphor too. Ren swallowed.
"Is it bad?" Recovery Girl's voice cut in before Dr. Seno could dress the answer.
"It is yours. We decide bad later" Ren almost laughed. The scan bed carried the almost badly. He stayed still. Dr. Seno said "Two more passes" The first wrong thing happened during pass five. A light flickered in the control booth. Not the scan light. Not the room light. A small monitor in the corner. Aizawa turned his head. Kurose noticed him notice.
"What?" The technician frowned.
"External interference flag" Dr. Seno's hands moved over controls.
"Source?"
"Not internal. Maybe communication noise" Aizawa said "Stop scan" Dr. Seno hit the control. The scanner hummed down. Ren did not move. Good. He wanted to. Badly. The soft supports released automatically. Recovery Girl stepped closer.
"Stay there" Ren stayed. The second wrong thing was the door. Not opening. Locking. The sound was almost too soft. Aizawa's head snapped toward it. Kurose moved before anyone spoke.
"Door status?" The technician looked pale.
"Still locked from inside protocol" Kurose said "We do not have inside lock protocol during occupied scan" Aizawa pulled his goggles up fully.
"Abort. Manual exit" The control booth light flickered again. Then the speaker crackled. Not Dr. Seno. Not the technician. A voice, smooth and polite and horribly calm, entered the imaging room.
"Please remain still. The scan is almost complete" For half a second, nobody breathed. Ren's blood went cold. Then hot. His palms flared. No image. No fragment. Reality. Recovery Girl said "Ren" He forced the words out.
"Voice not ours. Palms hot. No image" Aizawa's scarf lifted. Kurose reached for the manual alarm panel. The panel sparked once before her hand touched it. She jerked back, not hurt, but stopped. The third wrong thing came from the wall behind the scanner. Not the door. Not the floor. Not an object. A seam opened where there had been no seam. Black mist curled through it like smoke remembering a body. Aizawa's gaze snapped to it. The mist recoiled. For one wild second, Ren thought that would be enough.
Then the room lights cut to emergency red and something slammed against the outer door from the hallway side. Not in. Out. Blocking help. Recovery Girl moved to Ren. Kurose shouted "Stay down!" Aizawa shouted "Do not move!" Ren did not know which command was for him. Both. All. The black mist thinned under Aizawa's stare, twisting away from direct line of sight. It did not vanish. It crawled along the wall seam, hiding behind the scanner's ring, using the machine's bulk like cover. Aizawa cursed.
The speaker crackled again. This time the voice was different. Older. Amused. Not loud.
"Such careful children" Ren's body remembered fear before his mind placed it. His scars heated. Not his palms. Scars. Every old line beneath his skin seemed to wake at once, not into lattice, not yet, but into attention. Recovery Girl saw his face.
"No" Ren whispered "Scar heat" Aizawa could not look at him and the mist both. Kurose moved to the side, placing herself where Ren could see her.
"Ren. Listen to me" The mist snapped upward, then flattened again as Aizawa's gaze caught part of it. The scanner beeped. Not a medical beep. A countdown. Dr. Seno's voice came through the control booth, strained and furious.
"It is not me. I am locked out" The technician was on the floor behind her, conscious but dazed. Kurose's eyes stayed on Ren.
"You do not chase. You do not prove. You do not help by moving first" Ren's breath tore in his chest.
"I know" The mist spread wider. Aizawa shifted to keep line of sight. Something heavy hit the outer door again. A muffled explosion sounded from beyond the corridor. Bakugo? No. Not here. Not his door. Not now. The speaker hissed.
"You have taught him well" Aizawa snarled "Shut up" Then the scanner ring moved. It should not have been able to. It rotated suddenly, not toward Ren, but between Aizawa and the mist. Line of sight broke for less than a second. Less than a second was enough. The black fog lunged. Recovery Girl grabbed Ren's shoulder. Kurose moved too. Ren felt both of them. Human. Real. Too late. A cold pressure wrapped his right arm, not like a hand, not like rope, like the idea of distance being removed from the wrong side.
His scars flashed hot. Scar Lattice tried to wake. Not full. Not controlled. Emergency lines burned under skin, pale and red, crawling toward his shoulder. Pain hit. He said the stop word because some part of him still believed in rules.
"Barley!" Recovery Girl shouted something. Aizawa's gaze found the mist again. The pressure flickered. Kurose caught Ren's left wrist with both hands, not pulling hard enough to injure, just anchoring.
"Ren!" He looked at her. For one instant, the room split into lines. Kurose holding. Recovery Girl gripping his shoulder. Aizawa fighting for line of sight. Dr. Seno pounding against locked controls. Red light. Black mist. The scan bed. The wrong door. He could pull back. He tried. Scar Lattice flared along his arm, anchoring tissue, bracing tendons, turning old damage into refusal. The pain was bright enough to become white. The mist did not pull harder. It changed direction. Not against Kurose. Around her.
The cold pressure opened under Ren's back. The bed beneath him vanished from meaning. Not physically. Spatially. The room tilted without moving. Kurose's grip slipped one centimeter. That was all. Ren shouted. Not words. Aizawa lunged. Recovery Girl's fingers dug into his shoulder. Kurose screamed his name. The black fog folded. For the first time since the camp, Ren moved without choosing the route. The last thing he saw inside U. A.
was the wall beyond the scanner, red-lit and shaking, as Aizawa's scarf cut through empty air and Kurose fell forward with Ren's name still in her mouth. Then the imaging room disappeared. Not into darkness. Into cold. Into antiseptic air that did not pretend to be care. Ren hit the floor on his side. Pain detonated through his arm. His scars burned, then locked, then failed all at once. The fog withdrew. The room above him was not U. A. White ceiling. Hard light. Metal smell. Machines.
A voice nearby, old and delighted in a way that made Ren's stomach turn.
"Careful. Do not damage the connective tissue before we know what it can teach us" Ren tried to push himself up. His right arm did not answer properly. His left hand scraped against the floor. No soft mat. No bolted kettle. No shelf. No Bentaro. No wall panel. No request button. No Hana. No Daichi. No Kurose. No Aizawa. No Recovery Girl. His palms were burning. His scars were worse. He forced one word out because it was the only one that still belonged to him.
"Here" No one answered with his name. Somewhere far away, alarms would be screaming. Somewhere, the structure would be moving too late. Ren opened his eyes wider and saw a pair of polished shoes stop near his hand. The old voice spoke again.
"Indeed" A pause. Then, softly.
"Here at last"
