Chương 86: Before the Smoke
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~41 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The third morning of camp looked like progress. Ren did not trust it. Progress had a talent for arriving disguised as something safe, then asking for more than anyone had agreed to give. Still, the evidence was becoming difficult to ignore. Students moved through breakfast with less shock and more rhythm. Soreness remained, but fewer people treated it like betrayal. The Hero Course students still looked exhausted, but exhaustion had begun turning from spectacle into data.
Conditional schedules were no longer novel enough to humiliate every time someone said safe zone. Even Shinso had stopped glaring at his gray tag each morning, though he still glared at birds, labels, and any food good enough to create emotional complications. Ren's chart had held. No unreported heat. No Scar Tissue activation. No compensation training. No unsafe route requests. No secret tactical maps. That last one had required discipline bordering on spiritual violence.
He wrote the morning entry in the corner of the dining hall while Kaminari argued with Sero over whether muscle pain could become legally separate from the body. Sleep: 6h35. Woke once. No dream retained. No heat. No fragment association on waking. Morning state yellow-low. Camp rhythm forming. Caution: rhythm may reduce reporting vigilance. Action: continue checks despite comfort. Kurose read over his shoulder.
"Good" Ren did not look up.
"Comfort as risk?"
"Yes. Familiarity reduces attention. You noticed" Shinso, across the table, looked offended.
"Comfort is a trap too?" Kurose said "Everything can become a trap if you use it to stop thinking" Kaminari turned from the next table.
"I heard that and I reject it spiritually" Aizawa said from the doorway "Your spirit is not on the schedule" Kaminari lowered his spoon.
"Yes sir" Bakugo snorted. Midoriya had one hand on his notebook, not opening it. He looked better today. Not rested exactly, but more contained. The green light that lived under his skin had become less like an apology waiting to explode and more like a tool he had not stopped fearing but had started respecting. Uraraka was eating steadily. Iida was not correcting anyone's posture before breakfast.
Todoroki was holding a cup of tea with both hands and staring into it as if it might provide family-neutral heat regulation advice. Yaoyorozu had her schedule folded once, not spread across the table like an emergency plan. Bakugo had leaves nowhere visible, which was probably for the safety of everyone present. The room felt almost normal. That was the danger. Kurose tapped the chart.
"Add one more line" Ren looked at her.
"Which?"
"What stability makes you want to assume" He disliked the question immediately. That meant answer. He wrote: Stability makes me want to assume the structure will catch the next thing too. Kurose nodded.
"And?" Ren added: It might. It might not. I still report before assuming.
"Good" Shinso leaned over.
"That is an ugly line""Yes""Keep it""I was going to""Annoying" Mandalay entered after breakfast with the day's schedule and a calmer expression than Pixie-Bob's, which was not difficult but remained appreciated.
"Today's morning blocks continue Quirk intensification for standard groups and expanded relay for conditional candidates. Afternoon includes rest, individual reflection, and limited supervised terrain contact for selected modified-route students" Ren's hand paused. Limited supervised terrain contact. Kurose looked at him before he spoke.
"Read the whole line" Ren looked down at his packet. Selected modified-route students may step off service pavement onto designated low-risk forest edge path under staff supervision for five-minute sensory and hazard-reporting drill. No route progression. No independent movement. No red-zone role. Stop on request. Forest edge path. Not forest route. Not Beast Forest. Not proof. A path. Five minutes. Ren's right palm stayed cool. His chest did not.
"Status. Yellow-high. Limited terrain contact anticipation. No heat. No image. Hope spike" Recovery Girl's tablet, already on the table for morning checks, crackled.
"Hope spike is not clearance to become poetic" Ren said "Understood" Shinso muttered "Medical omnipresence" Recovery Girl said "Correct" Shinso went very still. Aizawa looked almost amused. Almost. The morning relay block began cleanly. Too cleanly. Ren stood on the blue square at the lower observation deck while the active groups moved below. The deck air was warmer than yesterday, sunlight catching in patches on damp leaves, insects beginning their own indifferent schedule.
The railing no longer felt like a cage every second. That was new. He reported it.
"Yellow-low. Railing feels less punitive today. No heat. Caution for comfort reducing vigilance" Kurose wrote.
"Good" Pixie-Bob, who had apparently learned to lurk near decks, pointed at him.
"Serious and self-aware today!" Kurose looked at her.
"Akiyama" Pixie-Bob sighed dramatically.
"Akiyama. Serious and self-aware today" Ren considered whether that was better. Only marginally. First field group. Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Asui. Their task had escalated. Weighted rescue pack, moving earth obstruction, simulated civilian distress sound, and low visibility. Midoriya moved better, low power contained, eyes still too hungry for every variable but feet more honest under him. Uraraka called nausea one before anyone asked. Iida checked route before command.
Asui identified a branch hazard overhead before ground movement. Ren did not need to call for the first four minutes. This felt worse than calling. He reported.
"Yellow. No-call usefulness discomfort. No heat. Holding" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Then the hazard came. Not a major one. A small one. The moving earth obstruction forced the group toward a narrow patch between two root clusters. Midoriya saw the opening. Iida saw the route. Uraraka saw the civilian pack. Asui saw the overhead branch. Everyone saw part of it. No one owned the whole timing. Ren compressed.
"Hazard. Shared partial visibility before narrow passage. Call: stop and name one hazard each before crossing. Support: Iida count, Asui overhead, Uraraka pack, Midoriya footing" Mandalay transmitted. Below, the group stopped. Four students spoke in sequence. Then crossed. The route held. Ren exhaled. No heat. Thirteen, beside the map board, said softly "That call did not solve the route. It made them share it" Ren wrote the sentence down. A call can make the route shared. Second group.
Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari. The constructs were faster today. The civilian route shifted mid-drill. Bakugo adapted faster than yesterday, which was both excellent and socially dangerous because visible improvement made him angrier at the need for feedback. Kirishima held the path. Sero's tape angle improved. Kaminari still hesitated before output, but now he called his own range before discharging. Progress. Ugly. Real. Ren only transmitted one call.
"Hazard. Route shifted after blast commitment. Call: Sero mark new path before Bakugo second strike. Support: Kirishima shield transition" Mandalay sent it. Bakugo looked toward the deck again. This time, he did not shout. He adjusted. Ren wrote: Bakugo accepted transmitted route call without visible argument. Then stopped. Kurose looked at the line.
"Within scope" Ren nodded. Below, Bakugo destroyed the earth construct with an upward burst so controlled it probably offended him. Third group. Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Tokoyami, Shoji. The terrain was shadow-heavy and damp. Todoroki's ice risked invisible slickness again. Yaoyorozu created markers first now. Good. Tokoyami was cautious around deeper shade. Shoji monitored side approaches with multiple arms extended, each movement slow enough to avoid branch noise. Ren's palm stayed cool at the first crack. Good.
At the second crack, mild warmth. He reported.
"Yellow. Branch auditory mild association. No heat? Correction. Mild right palm warmth. No image. Continuing if stable" Kurose said "Proceed with one call" Ren looked. Primary hazard was not the branch. It was overcorrection. The group heard the crack and all attention shifted outward. The marked route in front of them narrowed near a wet slope. If they watched the sound too long, they would step wrong.
"Hazard. Attention pulled by branch sound away from footing. Call: one person checks sound, others hold route eyes. Support: Shoji side check, Yaoyorozu route marker" Mandalay transmitted. Shoji turned outward. Yaoyorozu pointed the route. Todoroki held. Tokoyami adjusted. Good. Heat faded. Clean. Strong. Stable. The morning block ended with fewer incidents than yesterday. Kurose wrote strong trend on her sheet. Ren saw. His first instinct was relief. His second was suspicion.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience. His third was to report both.
"Yellow. Relief at strong trend. Concern that relief may make later trigger feel like failure. No heat" Kurose nodded.
"That is why we keep charting" Shinso walked up from his own false-call drill, where he had apparently requested reduction before a bait line became insult rehearsal again. His face was blank enough to count as active weather.
"Status?" Ren asked"Yellow. Irritated. Successfully boring. No Quirk pressure. Hate strong trends""Same""Good" They both froze. Shinso glared at the deck.
"Camp is ruining me" The limited terrain contact happened before lunch. Ren had expected it to be a path. It was barely that. A strip of forest edge beside the service road, marked with blue flags every two meters, bounded by rope on one side and staff on the other. The ground had leaves, roots, small stones, and uneven soil. It was no more than ten meters long. A child could walk it. That did not make it easy. Kurose stood at the entrance. Aizawa stood at the far end. Mandalay remained near the road.
Recovery Girl watched by tablet. Shinso sat on a low stone outside the rope, awareness range but not inside the drill unless asked. Iida and Uraraka observed as support students for the block. Yaoyorozu watched from the service road with a clipboard, because sequence support apparently had gravity now. Ren stood before the first blue flag. The forest smelled closer. Not through bus glass. Not from deck height. Here. Soil underfoot if he stepped. Leaves near his shoes. A root crossing the marked strip. No smoke.
No hand. No heat. He reported.
"Yellow-high. Forest edge contact anticipation. No heat. No image. Hope and fear both present" Recovery Girl said "Hands open" He opened them.
"Proceed to flag one. Stop. Report" Ren stepped off pavement. The soil gave slightly. Not much. Enough. His right palm warmed. Mild.
"Flag one. Mild right palm heat. Ground contact trigger. No image. No sound. Standing" Kurose said "Breathe" He breathed. Heat did not rise.
"Proceed or stop?" Ren looked at the next flag. Two meters. A root between. He wanted to continue. He wanted that wanting to be enough. It was not. He checked. Heat mild. No image. Staff present. Role: sensory and hazard-reporting drill.
"Proceed" He stepped to flag two. The root was damp under his shoe. He did not slip. No branch crack. No smoke. No hand. Heat stayed mild.
"Flag two. Root contact. Heat stable mild. No image. Hazard note: damp root visible in daylight, high risk under low light. Call would be mark or avoid, not step fast" Aizawa's voice came from the end.
"Good" Ren's jaw tightened. The word felt different from inside the trees. He proceeded to flag three. A branch snapped somewhere deeper in the woods. Real. Not scripted. His palm flared moderate. His whole body stopped.
"Yellow-red. Branch crack auditory trigger. Moderate right palm heat. No image. No smoke. No hand. Standing at flag three. Request pause""Pause granted" Kurose said Shinso rose from the stone but did not move closer. Good. Uraraka's hand went to her own wrist, grounding herself perhaps. Iida stood very still. Yaoyorozu wrote something. A bird moved in the trees. The forest did not care. Ren breathed. Heat held moderate for three breaths. Then lowered.
"Mild-moderate. Decreasing" Recovery Girl said "Continue?" That was not permission. It was a question. Daily consent inside a step. He looked to flag four. The end was at flag five. Five minutes. No proof. No destiny. He could stop. Stopping would not close camp. Stopping might be the correct data. He checked the wanting. It wanted completion. Completion wanted to become proof. He said "Stop at flag three. Enough for first contact" The words hit harder than continuing would have.
Kurose's face changed by one degree.
"Accepted. Return along same path slowly" Aizawa did not say good. Thank him for small mercies. Ren turned. Step. Root. Soil. Pavement. His palm cooled when his shoe hit service road. Not gone. Cooling. He reported.
"Exited. Heat decreasing. Drill stopped by choice before completion. No activation" Recovery Girl nodded through the tablet.
"Excellent" Ren closed his eyes. That was worse than good. Shinso sat back down. His shoulders dropped. Uraraka smiled softly. Iida looked deeply moved by safe discontinuation. Yaoyorozu said "Stopping at flag three preserved repeatability" Ren looked at her. Repeatability. Yes. Not completion. Repeatability. Kurose wrote it. The field contact report later read: First forest-edge contact. Proceeded to flag three of five. Mild to moderate heat after unscripted branch crack. No image.
Candidate requested pause, observed decrease, chose stop before completion. Returned safely. No activation. Strong self-limiting behavior. Strong self-limiting behavior. Ren stared at the phrase. It did not feel strong. It felt like leaving two flags behind. Maybe that was why it was strong. Lunch followed. Bakugo heard about flag three because Kaminari heard from Uraraka, because Uraraka was pleased, because Kaminari could not keep a whisper alive in captivity. Bakugo appeared beside Ren's table holding a tray.
"You stopped at flag three?" Ren looked up.
"Yes" Bakugo stared.
"Out of five?"
"Yes""Because of a branch?"
"Because of moderate heat after an unscripted trigger" Bakugo's face did the thing where he had four arguments and hated that none fit.
"So you quit" The table went silent. Shinso's eyes sharpened. Iida inhaled. Uraraka's face tightened. Ren answered before anyone else.
"Yes" Bakugo blinked. Ren continued "I quit the drill at flag three to preserve repeatability and reporting trust" Bakugo looked angry that the answer had not resisted.
"You always add words""Yes""Do you hate it?"
"Yes""But you did it""Yes" Bakugo stared. Then clicked his tongue and sat down at the next table.
"Fine" Kirishima leaned toward him.
"That was almost supportive" Bakugo snapped "Eat dirt" Kirishima grinned.
"Noted" Ren logged social load. No heat. Useful hostility. Possibly. Afternoon brought individual reflection. That sounded gentle. It was not. Thirteen led Ren, Shinso, Uraraka, Iida, Yaoyorozu, and Midoriya through a guided debrief in the main hall while the rest of the Hero Course rotated through specialized drills. The topic was withdrawal without failure. Ren suspected conspiracy. Thirteen displayed three words on the board. STOP PAUSE WITHDRAW Then below them: WHICH ONE PRESERVES FUTURE ACTION?
Midoriya looked at the board as if it had been designed to attack him. Uraraka nodded slowly. Iida adjusted his glasses. Yaoyorozu's pen was already moving. Shinso whispered "Educational violence" Ren whispered "Yes" Thirteen said "A stop is not always an end. A pause is not always hesitation. Withdrawal is not always fear. Each can be cowardice, wisdom, procedure, or rescue depending on context" They turned to Ren. He had expected it. Still hated it.
"Akiyama. Flag three" He reported, not narrated.
"Moderate heat after unscripted branch trigger. No image. No smoke. No hand. Heat decreasing after pause. Chose stop before completion because completion urge was becoming proof urge" Midoriya's face changed. Thirteen nodded.
"What did stopping preserve?"
"Future contact drill. Reporting trust. Medical clearance. Staff confidence. My ability to call the next stop real""Good" Midoriya wrote that down. Then stopped. Closed notebook. He looked physically pained by not adding more. Strong self-limiting behavior, apparently, was contagious and miserable. Thirteen looked at him.
"Midoriya. What does that apply to?" Midoriya swallowed.
"One For All output. If I push through a warning because I want to prove progress, I risk losing future repetitions""Uraraka?"
"Nausea. If I wait until I collapse, I make other people carry the consequence""Iida?"
"Speed. If I treat slowing as disrespect to urgency, I damage the route""Yaoyorozu?"
"Creation sequence. If I create too much to prove preparedness, I may reduce flexibility""Shinso?" He looked at the board.
"Sarcasm. If I use it after I already know I need help, I make the request arrive late" Thirteen nodded.
"Withdrawal can preserve honesty" Shinso looked like he hated the sentence. Ren wrote it down. Withdrawal can preserve honesty. After the debrief, Midoriya approached Ren in the hallway. Kurose stood far enough away to supervise, close enough to end things if guilt turned into weather. Midoriya held his closed notebook.
"I wanted to say I was proud of you" Ren checked himself. Yellow. No heat.
"That is allowed if you do not make it a lesson about how much pain I avoided" Midoriya nodded immediately.
"I am proud that you stopped when stopping was the answer" Ren considered.
"Accepted" Midoriya's shoulders loosened. Then he added "I need to learn that too" Ren said "Yes" Midoriya laughed once. Small.
"Accepted" They stood in a silence that did not demand repair. Good. Then Kota ran past the hallway entrance with a towel over his shoulder, scowling at the world. He saw them. Stopped. Looked at Ren.
"Heard you quit halfway" Midoriya stiffened. Ren did not.
"Yes" Kota's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because finishing was becoming the wrong answer" Kota stared.
"That's stupid""Maybe""Stop saying that""No" Midoriya looked between them, bewildered and concerned. Kota pointed at Ren.
"You're bad at arguing""Yes" Then he ran off toward the side corridor. Midoriya whispered "Was that okay?" Ren watched the empty hallway.
"Yes" Kurose said from behind them "Status""Yellow. Kota comment. No heat. Weakness trigger minimal. Boundary maintained""Good" Midoriya looked like he wanted to ask five things and asked none. Progress. Evening training shifted. The standard groups returned late, filthy again, exhausted again, improving again. But the energy was different.
Aizawa announced that tomorrow would involve more individualized Quirk intensification and a limited night-adjacent orientation for some groups, not a full night route, and that no one was to interpret this as permission to wander after lights-out. Mina immediately asked if night-adjacent meant spooky. Aizawa said "It means supervised" Kaminari asked if supervised spooky was better. Aizawa said "For me, no" Pixie-Bob announced that dinner was ready and that all hardworking kittens should eat.
Bakugo shouted "Stop calling us that!" Pixie-Bob shouted back "Then stop being adorable when angry!" The dining hall nearly collapsed as a social structure. Ren did not write it down. At dinner, Kota did not enter the hall. Mandalay noticed. Ren noticed Mandalay noticing. Not his door. Still. He asked Kurose quietly "Is Kota within expected location?" Kurose looked toward Mandalay, who gave a small nod from across the room.
"Yes. Not your action" Ren nodded.
"Logged internally. No heat" Shinso leaned over.
"You asked boundary-safe""Yes""Good" The word had less resistance tonight. Maybe they were all tired. Maybe repetition wore grooves in the right places too. Night settled slowly. The lodge smelled of food, damp clothes, wood polish, and exhausted teenagers. Ren completed his chart in the main hall before going upstairs. Forest-edge contact stopped at flag three. Moderate heat after branch trigger. Reported. Resolved. Chose withdrawal before completion. No activation. No compensation. Relay block successful.
Kota comments: two. No heat. Boundary maintained. Emotional state: frustrated, relieved, ashamed, proud. All present. He paused. Then wrote: Stopping before the end can keep the route open. He looked at the sentence. There. That was the day. Shinso read it over his shoulder.
"Good" Ren glanced at him.
"You are saying it more""I am too tired to defend myself""Stable trend""Do not chart me""Too late""Rude" Before lights-out, Ren stepped onto the porch for the approved five-minute air block. Kurose stood inside the doorway. Shinso was not his awareness support for this block; Iida was, standing near the bottom of the steps with formal alertness and visible effort not to over-police. The forest was dark beyond the porch lamps. Darker than before.
The day's heat had left the air, and the damp ground held the scent of roots and leaves. Somewhere in the trees, a branch cracked. Ren's palm warmed. Mild. Not moderate. He reported.
"Yellow-red. Branch crack. Mild heat. No image. No smoke. No hand. Staying on porch" Iida said "Logged as peer awareness" Kurose wrote. Heat faded. Then came another sound. Farther away. Not a branch. A cough? No. A faint pop. Like wood under sudden heat. Ren's breath stopped. Smoke. The word did not arrive as image. It arrived as smell. Not real. Memory? Future? A sharp, dry trace at the back of his throat. His right palm flared moderate. Left forearm warmed. No visual. No hand. But the air in his mind darkened.
He gripped the porch rail. No. Hands open. He opened them.
"Yellow-red rising. Smoke association. Moderate right palm heat. Mild left forearm. No visual. No location. Request staff review" Kurose stepped out immediately. Iida moved one step closer and stopped. Good. Mandalay appeared at the hall entrance behind Kurose. Aizawa's voice came from inside.
"Report again" Ren repeated exactly. No embellishment. Smoke association. Moderate palm. Mild forearm. No visual. No location. No real smoke confirmed. Mandalay closed her eyes. A second passed. Then another.
"I do not detect distress calls in range. No staff alert. Wind direction normal. I will have Tiger check perimeter on routine sweep" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Heat trend" Ren looked at his hand.
"Moderate holding. Forearm fading" Aizawa stepped onto the porch.
"End air block. Inside" The words hit. He wanted to argue. Not because he needed the porch. Because smoke without location felt like a question cut in half. He did not argue.
"Complying" He stepped inside. Heat decreased the moment the door closed. Not gone. Lower. Kurose wrote.
"Status""Yellow-red. Frustration. Fear. Heat decreasing. No image. No action beyond report" Aizawa looked toward Mandalay.
"Routine perimeter check. Do not escalate students yet" Mandalay nodded and moved. Iida stood very straight at the doorway.
"Should I remain?" Kurose said "No. Thank you. Report complete" Iida nodded.
"Understood" He looked at Ren.
"Route remains inside for now" Ren breathed.
"Yes" That helped more than it should have. He returned to the room under staff instruction. Shinso saw his face and sat up immediately.
"Status?"
"Yellow-red decreasing. Smoke association. Moderate heat earlier. No image. No location. Reported. Air block ended" Shinso's expression sharpened.
"Real smoke?"
"Not confirmed""Perimeter?"
"Routine check" Shinso looked toward the window. Then away. Good. Do not feed it.
"Good report" Ren sat on his futon. His hands were cool by the time lights-out came. Mostly. Kurose checked once more. Recovery Girl was informed. No camp reset. No alarm. No new actionable detail. Trustworthy data. Still, when Ren lay down, the room felt different. Not unsafe. Not safe. Thinner. Like the air between normal and warning had narrowed. He placed the family card under his pillow. Route can hold one step at a time. He added one line to the chart before sleep, with permission.
Smoke association during porch block. Reported before image. No action withheld. Then, underneath, smaller: The structure caught the report. I do not know yet if it caught the danger. He stared at the sentence. That was not fear pretending to be fact. It was the truth. Outside, Tiger completed a perimeter sweep and found no intruder, no fire, no smoke, no broken barrier. Mandalay sent no distress message. Aizawa remained awake longer than usual. Kurose reviewed Ren's earlier reports.
Recovery Girl, far away, did not like the pattern and wrote that she did not like it because medical notes did not require optimism. In the forest beyond the official sweep, nothing moved where staff looked. Farther out, beyond the camp's protected habits, a different route existed. Not close enough to be seen. Not loud enough to be heard. Not yet. Ren did not know that. He only knew the smell of smoke had reached him before smoke existed. Or before anyone could prove it existed. He closed his eyes.
Sleep came late. When it came, it carried no dreams he could keep. But somewhere in the dark behind sleep, a hand reached through smoke. And this time, the hand was not asking him to save everyone. It was pointing deeper into the trees.
