Chương 141: A Date Is Not a Door

The provisional license exam arrived as a date before it arrived as a battlefield. That made it worse. Battles had motion. Noise. immediate threat. clear wrongness wearing a face. Dates sat on paper and pretended to be harmless while reorganizing everyone's breathing around them. Aizawa wrote the date on the common room board after breakfast. Mina whispered "That is soon" Iida stood before anyone asked him to and then, with visible effort, sat back down because not every sentence required a standing position. Uraraka stared at the board with her hands around a cup of tea she had not drunk. Todoroki looked at the date, then at the window, then at the kettle, as if tea might have jurisdiction over calendar pressure. Bakugo crossed his arms.

"Finally" Kirishima looked at him.

"That was too fast as a reaction""It is an exam. We take it" Midoriya's notebook was closed. His fingers were pressing into the cover hard enough to bend it slightly. Aizawa looked at the class.

"This is not a surprise. It is now official. You will be registered as planned candidates unless medical or educational staff remove you from eligibility" Kaminari raised a hand.

"Does planned candidates mean doomed candidates with paperwork?" Jiro said "That is your personal translation" Aizawa said "Planned candidates means candidates. Passing is not guaranteed. Participation is not guaranteed if you become unsafe before the date. The date is not permission to train stupidly" Kurose stood near the side wall with a second folder under one arm. That meant the common room briefing had a Provisional Track version waiting behind it. Mina looked toward the medical route hallway.

"What about Ren and Shinso?" Shinso sat at the edge of the room with barley tea and the expression of someone who regretted proximity to every possible answer. Ren was not physically present. His screen stood on the side counter, muted for now, the camera off by his choice while he finished breakfast in his room. Aizawa looked at Shinso first.

"Provisional Track candidates may be conditionally registered" The room shifted. Shinso's hand tightened around the cup. Aizawa continued "Conditionally means their registration can be withdrawn by student request, medical veto, staff decision, or failure to meet readiness conditions before the exam. The license date does not override Provisional Track principles" He wrote beneath the date. STOPRETURNCONSENTROLEMAP Kaminari let out a breath.

"Okay. Seeing those helps" Bakugo muttered "Of course the board has emotional seatbelts now" Todoroki said "Seatbelts are useful" Bakugo turned slowly.

"I know what seatbelts are" Todoroki nodded.

"Good" Kirishima whispered "Dangerous good" Aizawa tapped the date.

"Pressure will increase. You will feel it. You will want to use the date as an excuse to compress training, ignore fatigue, skip body maps, and call panic discipline. You will not" Midoriya's eyes lowered. Aizawa looked at him.

"Everyone heard that?" The class answered.

"Yes, sir" Aizawa looked at Midoriya until he looked up.

"Everyone?" Midoriya swallowed.

"Yes, sir" Kurose stepped forward.

"The exam measures license readiness. It does not measure your worth, your debt to All Might, your guilt after Kamino, your ability to replace anyone, or whether trauma made you more deserving of a door" The words landed exactly where they were meant to. Several students flinched. Good. Sometimes clear language was kinder than soft language. Shinso looked into his tea. Ren's screen activated. No camera. Audio only. His voice came through calm enough to be suspicious.

"Date heard" Recovery Girl's voice came faintly behind him.

"Eat" Ren said "Eating" Kaminari whispered "She can weaponize one word" Jiro whispered "Eat?"

"Yes" Aizawa looked at the speaker.

"Akiyama. Map" Ren answered after one breath.

"Ren's room. desk. breakfast. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. screen audio. date on board. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. hunger. pressure. map present""Pain absence?"

"No""Gate?"

"Quiet" Aizawa nodded.

"Good" Bakugo looked at the dark screen.

"You registering?" The common room froze. Kirishima looked like he wanted to physically catch the question and drag it back. Aizawa did not interrupt. Maybe because Bakugo's delivery was terrible. Maybe because the question was allowed. Ren was quiet for two seconds.

"Conditionally" Bakugo clicked his tongue.

"That means yes until no" Ren said "That is accurate" Shinso looked toward the screen.

"Annoyingly accurate" Bakugo scowled.

"Everything here is annoying" Aizawa said "Good. Annoyance means you are awake" Mina looked at the board.

"So we are all candidates""Planned or conditional candidates" Kurose corrected Mina nodded.

"Right. Planned or conditional candidates" Sero leaned back.

"That is a terrible club name" Kaminari said "The Conditional Candidates" Jiro said "No""It has rhythm""It has paperwork" Todoroki said "Paperwork can have rhythm" Everyone looked at him. He looked back.

"What?" Bakugo muttered "Dorms made him worse" The common briefing ended with training schedules. Morning body-map conditioning. Midday rescue modules. Afternoon combat-control modules. Evening dorm conduct and recovery. No late-night extra training. No unsupervised Quirk stress testing. No support gear testing outside scheduled windows. No treating the exam date as a moral emergency. The last line was underlined twice. Kaminari stared at it.

"I do not know how to avoid moral emergencies" Aizawa said "Start with breakfast" Recovery Girl's voice came from Ren's audio.

"Correct" Kaminari looked at the speaker.

"She agrees with breakfast" Ren said "Dangerous alliance" The screen went silent after that because Recovery Girl apparently enforced breakfast by force. The Provisional Track briefing took place an hour later in a smaller room. Not Observation Room 2. Not R-2. A neutral room that had been made less neutral with consent. Two visible exits. three chairs. one screen. one whiteboard. snacks on a side table. no semicircle. no documents spread flat like evidence.

Ren appeared on the screen from his room, camera on this time, chair angled at his desk. Shinso sat near the exit, not the corner. Aizawa stood at the board. Kurose sat with the folder. Recovery Girl was on audio and had already warned everyone that she would end the meeting if ambition raised anyone's temperature. Nezu was present through audio only, because Shinso had said the principal voice was acceptable but principal eyes made registration feel official too fast.

"Educational review. No punishment" Kurose said "No disappointment performance" Shinso's eyes moved to her.

"Written?" She turned the folder. Written. No student will be punished or emotionally penalized for withdrawing from conditional registration or participation on safety, consent, or readiness grounds. Ren looked at the line.

"Emotionally penalized sounds impossible to enforce" Kurose nodded.

"Hard to enforce. Necessary to name" Shinso said "So people can be corrected""Yes" Aizawa tapped the board.

"Your eligibility conditions remain. Ren. Return with body map. Stop compliance. no uncontrolled Graft Lattice spread. no field activity after medical threshold. no live tactical command unless authorized. support gear private-first only. no escalation because numbers improve" Ren nodded.

"Accepted""Shinso. Consent protocol. no Brainwashing use as convenience. no voice gear modulation without consent lockout. no panic management role unless assigned and accepted. no participation if you cannot say no to a Quirk-use request in the room" Shinso's eyes narrowed at the last one.

"Repeat that" Aizawa did.

"No participation if you cannot say no to a Quirk-use request in the room" Kurose added "The exam will pressure you to use Brainwashing because it is efficient. If you cannot refuse when it is not appropriate, you are not ready" Shinso looked down. That one hurt. Good. It belonged. Ren looked at him through the screen.

"Good condition" Shinso did not look up.

"Disgusting""Accurate""Unfortunately" Aizawa wrote: REFUSAL READINESS Then looked at Ren.

"Yours too" Ren blinked.

"Refusal readiness?"

"If you cannot refuse continuing when continuing helps the score, you are not ready" Ren's mouth went dry. September 2 became sharper. Not door. Date. Not destiny. Still sharp. He nodded.

"Accepted" Recovery Girl's audio crackled.

"Say it" Ren closed his eyes.

"Then why take it?" The room did not answer too fast. Nezu spoke softly.

"Because hero work will also fail to reward correct choices. Learning that under supervision matters" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso stared at the table. Aizawa added "And because you both want the door" Silence. Clean. Unforgiving. True. Ren breathed.

"Yes" Shinso's jaw worked.

"Yes" Kurose opened the folder fully now.

"Registration forms. Not signatures today unless you choose. You may read. mark objections. add conditions. delay. refuse" Shinso looked at Ren's screen. Ren looked back. Shinso said "Read first" Ren nodded.

"Read first" No one looked relieved. Good. They read. The forms were less awful than expected and more awful because they were forms. Candidate name. Course. Quirk designation. Role specialty. Medical notes. Emergency contacts. Consent acknowledgments. Withdrawal process. Support gear approval. Provisional Track conditions attached as appendix. Ren stopped at Quirk designation. Still his body's worst footnote. Kurose noticed.

"Language review?" Ren nodded. She read the line aloud.

"Quirk designation for examination purposes. Adaptive Scar Tissue: Graft Lattice. One altered Quirk with graft-derived subsidiary functions governed by student's primary Quirk response. Operational classification rescue-stabilization. Medical caution body-map disruption risk" Ren breathed.

"Student's primary Quirk response""Yes""Not graft integration success""No""Good" Recovery Girl said "Still hate the form" Kurose said "So do I" Shinso looked at his own designation. Brainwashing. Candidate hero name optional field. Responder. He stared at it. Not official. Candidate. There in a box anyway. Kurose said "You can leave it blank" Shinso said "No" Aizawa watched him.

"Keep it?" Shinso swallowed.

"Candidate" Kurose wrote a note. Candidate hero name to remain provisional. Shinso looked at the word until it stopped looking like a trap and started looking like a handle he might not hate later. The forms stayed unsigned at first. Then Ren reached for his pen. The wrist gate flickered. He felt it.

"Stop" Private patch pulse. Pain stayed. He set the pen down. Recovery Girl said "Map""Ren's room. desk. form. camera. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl audio. Aizawa. Kurose. Shinso. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. signing wanted proof. stopped" Aizawa nodded.

"Good" Shinso looked at him.

"Signing wanted proof?" Ren stared at the form.

"Yes""Same" Aizawa capped his marker.

"Then neither of you signs in this room" Ren looked up.

"What?"

"Signing became proof. We stop" Shinso's mouth opened. Closed. Kurose slid the forms back into the folder.

"Correct" Ren looked at the pen. September 2 waited. The form waited. The door waited. He hated waiting. He needed it. Aizawa said "You can sign later when signing is registration, not proof" Shinso looked away.

"Annoying" Ren said "Correct" Kurose wrote on the board beneath the date. SIGNING IS NOT PROVING Recovery Girl said "Keep that" Aizawa underlined it once. The meeting ended with no signatures. That was the first correct outcome of the day. Class 1-A did not understand that immediately. They learned during afternoon training. The scheduled module was a combined rescue-and-combat-control circuit. Not full exam simulation. Not yet.

Aizawa called it a pressure sampler, which Kaminari said sounded like a villain appliance and was not entirely wrong. Ren and Shinso observed first. Midoriya ran a route with Uraraka and Iida. Bakugo ran a separate hazard response with Kirishima and Jiro. Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Asui, and Sero handled containment and evacuation markers. The date on the board infected the gym immediately. Everyone moved too fast in different ways.

Midoriya confirmed route but spoke too quickly, missing one hazard marker until Uraraka caught it. Bakugo overcorrected his first blast angle so aggressively that the debris landed safe but his shoulder alignment suffered. Todoroki announced cold zone and then looked irritated at himself for announcing too late by half a second. Iida's commands became longer. Kaminari, observing, whispered "The date is making everyone weird" Shinso said "The date is a room with no door" Ren looked at him.

"Good phrase""Unwanted""Still good" Aizawa paused the module after three minutes. The class froze, breathing hard. Aizawa pointed at the date written on the side board.

"What did that change?" Silence. No one wanted to answer first. Naturally, Bakugo did.

"Everyone got slower by trying to be faster" Aizawa nodded.

"Good" Bakugo looked offended by agreement. Midoriya raised his hand.

"I skipped one visual check because I thought we need license pacing""And?"

"License pacing with missed hazard is bad pacing""Correct" Uraraka looked down.

"I wanted to prove I can handle rescue faster" Kurose said "Because of the date?"

"Yes" Iida adjusted his glasses.

"My commands lengthened because I attempted to prevent mistakes before they occurred" Jiro muttered "Preemptive speech" Iida nodded gravely.

"Yes" Todoroki looked at his ice marker.

"I wanted the first correction to be perfect because the exam has less time for correction" Aizawa looked at him.

"And?" Todoroki's mouth tightened.

"That made the first correction late""Good" Aizawa turned to Ren's observation position.

"Observer. One sentence" Ren looked at the class.

"You treated the date like an evaluator already watching" The gym went silent. Aizawa nodded.

"Exactly" Shinso added "And you tried to pass before the scenario began" Kurose wrote both. Kaminari whispered "That is horrifyingly accurate" Jiro whispered "Stop being right so loudly" Aizawa faced the class.

"The exam date is information. Not an evaluator. Not a command. Not a debt. If the date changes your first step into a worse step, you are not preparing. You are rehearsing panic" Midoriya wrote that down. Then stopped. Looked at his notebook. Closed it. Progress. Aizawa saw.

"Good" Midoriya's ears went red. Bakugo muttered "Nerd got praised for not writing" Midoriya did not defend himself. Good. Aizawa resumed the module. The second run was slower. Better. Not perfect. Better. Ren and Shinso did not enter the field that afternoon. Refusal readiness had to be trained before participation under date pressure. That was the staff decision. Ren hated it. Shinso hated it. That made the decision more trustworthy. During dinner, the exam date appeared on no one's lips for twelve minutes.

Then Kaminari broke.

"September 2 is soon" Everyone stopped. Aizawa was not in the common room. Kurose was not either. This meant the class had to decide whether to become stupid without direct adult supervision. Iida inhaled. Mina put one hand on his sleeve. He paused. Good. Uraraka said "Yes" Simple. No speech. Kaminari looked at her.

"I feel like my bones are late" Jiro said "That is disgusting but understandable" Asui nodded.

"Stop quoting board" Kirishima said "But board helped" Bakugo glared.

"Everything helps here now. It is annoying" Shinso, at the edge of the table, said "Annoyance is information" The room groaned. Ren's speaker, open at low common-room participation from his desk, clicked on.

"That was terrible" Shinso looked at it.

"You are not even here""Auditory suffering" Kaminari pointed at the speaker.

"Ren, are you registering?" The room froze. Kaminari's eyes widened.

"I asked wrong" Ren's voice came after a pause.

"Correction?" Kaminari swallowed.

"Have you decided whether to sign conditional registration or are you still waiting because signing started feeling like proof?" The room went silent for a different reason. Kaminari looked like he had surprised himself. Ren was quiet. Then he said "Still waiting" Kaminari nodded.

"Accepted" No one performed relief. No one performed disappointment. Bakugo looked at Kaminari.

"That was almost not dumb" Kaminari put a hand over his heart.

"From you, that is basically poetry""Take it back""Never" Jiro said "Take it back for survival""Considering" Ren's speaker clicked softly.

"Good correction" Kaminari's face went bright. Then he tried to dim it.

"Private pride later" Shinso muttered "This class is unbearable" Todoroki said "With tea" Bakugo snapped "Stop making that an argument" After dinner, Ren sat at his desk and looked at the unsigned form. Hana and Daichi were in the room. Not hovering. Present. Recovery Girl had allowed the form back only under the condition that Ren did not touch the pen until after a full map and food. The temporary room sign still said REN'S ROOM.

On his desk board: SIX TWENTY IS ALLOWED TO COUNT TWO SECONDS CAN BE A COMPLETE RESPONSE He added a third line before touching the form. WAITING CAN BE PART OF YES Hana read it. Daichi read it. Neither said anything too quickly. Ren looked at the form again. September 2. Conditional registration. He wanted to sign. He wanted the door. He wanted to be a planned shape instead of a thing adults moved around danger.

He also wanted signing to not become proof that Garaki had made him ready, proof that Graft Lattice was good, proof that he belonged because he had been altered enough to be useful. He put the pen beside the form. Did not pick it up.

"Tomorrow" Hana nodded.

"Tomorrow" Daichi said "Good waiting" Ren looked at him.

"That sounds fake""It is new""New can be bad""Yes""New can be good""Yes""Both""Always" Across the wing, Shinso placed his form on the desk beside his board. "Not proof" he said to the empty room The empty room did not answer. Good. He added a line to the board. A DATE IS NOT A COMMAND Then he placed the pen on top of the form without signing. Tomorrow. "Yes" The class accepted that as law. At 09: 00, Ren signed his conditional registration after a map check, breakfast, and ten minutes in which the pen sat in his hand without becoming proof. At 09: 07, Shinso signed his after writing the word candidate beside Responder himself. No applause. No cheering. No relief performance. Kurose recorded both signatures. Aizawa witnessed them. Recovery Girl said "Now eat again" Shinso looked at Aizawa.

"She says that to everyone?" Aizawa said "Eventually" Ren's voice came through the shared line.

"Curriculum" Shinso looked at his signed form. Conditional. Withdrawable. Not proof. Still a yes. He breathed.

"Conditional candidates" Ren said "Terrible club name" Kaminari's voice came from the common room where the shared speaker had absolutely not been meant to pick him up.

"I said that!" Jiro's voice followed.

"Do not claim credit for paperwork aesthetics" Bakugo shouted from somewhere farther away.

"Why is the speaker open?" Aizawa closed the channel. Too late. Ren looked at the signed form. The date remained ahead. Still sharp. Still too soon. Still not destiny. A date was not a door. But sometimes, after enough stops and maps and refusals and returns, a date could mark the hallway where a door might appear. The signatures did not open it. They did not prove he deserved it. They did not erase the option to turn back. They only said he was willing to approach. For today, approaching was enough.
