Chương 12: Rescue Points

Ren Akiyama looked. That was the rule. It was not noble. It was not dramatic. It did not make the ground stop shaking beneath the Zero Pointer's foot or make the artificial city any less small under the shadow of a machine built to be ignored. It only kept him from becoming stupid for one second longer. One second was useful. The Zero Pointer moved through Battle Center C like a weather event given armor. Its enormous legs crushed pavement panels with each step.
Its torso scraped building facades and tore decorative concrete loose in heavy sheets. Sirens wailed from hidden speakers. Dust rolled across the central avenue in thick waves, turning candidates into silhouettes as they scattered in every direction. Zero points. Avoid. Official instruction. The scoring system had spoken clearly. The scream beneath the collapsed facade spoke louder.
Ren stood at the mouth of the side street with his ribs burning, hands raw, left shoulder stiff, and breath catching every time he pulled air too deeply. Three streets away, the Zero Pointer lifted one massive leg, adjusted its direction, and began turning toward the densest cluster of fleeing candidates. The trapped scream came again. Closer. Not under the Zero Pointer's foot. Not yet. A section of fake building had collapsed outward after the machine's impact.
Slabs of reinforced training concrete lay across the sidewalk and part of the road. Dust obscured details. A candidate was somewhere inside it, voice high with pain and panic. Candidates ran past. One looked toward the debris. Stopped. Then saw the Zero Pointer shift and ran harder. Ren did not blame him. That was inconvenient. It would have been easier to blame him. Look first. Objective: determine if rescue possible without becoming additional casualty.
Distance to trapped candidate: approximately twenty-two meters. Distance to Zero Pointer: increasing sideways but unpredictable due to turn. Secondary robots: unknown, several disabled nearby, at least one active one-pointer audible behind dust. Available candidates: fleeing, disorganized, low willingness. Available tools: debris, signpost, broken pipe, vine candidate distant, blade-elbow unknown position, tail candidate unseen. Time: insufficient. Ren moved. Not toward the Zero Pointer. Toward the scream.
His first three steps hurt enough to make his body object. His ribs did not like impact now. Each footfall sent a sharp line through his left side. His hip throbbed where the one-pointer had struck him. His palms stung when he flexed them. The body sent reports. Ren received them. He did not let them vote. A one-pointer rolled out of the dust at his right, sensor mast bent but active. It turned toward him. No time. He grabbed a loose chunk of facade from the ground, threw it low, and missed the sensor completely.
The chunk struck the robot's front leg. Not damage. Distraction. The one-pointer corrected course half a second later. Half a second was enough to pass it. Ren reached the collapsed facade and dropped to one knee beside the first slab. Dust filled his mouth.
"Where are you?" A cough answered from behind a tilted wall section.
"Here! I'm here!" Female voice. Older than him maybe. Pain, but coherent. Good. Ren slid sideways through a gap between two slabs and saw her. A candidate with short silver hair and thick protective goggles lay half under a collapsed decorative column. One arm was free. The other was pinned at the sleeve, not crushed at the bone from the angle, but trapped beneath a concrete panel that had fallen over her shoulder and upper arm. Her legs were clear, but twisted awkwardly among debris.
Blood ran from a shallow cut along her forehead into her eyebrow. Her eyes locked onto Ren.
"Help me!" He looked at the debris. Column over sleeve and arm. Shoulder compressed? Unknown. No visible heavy bleeding. Breathing rapid. Potential head injury. Nearby wall unstable. Zero Pointer still moving.
"One arm pinned. Can you feel your fingers?"
"What?"
"Fingers. Can you feel them?" She sobbed once.
"Yes""Move them" Her fingers moved. Good.
"Shoulder pain?"
"Yes!"
"Sharp or pressure?"
"I don't know!" Fair. The one-pointer arrived behind him. Ren heard its wheels before he saw it. The pinned candidate's eyes went wide.
"Robot!"
"I know" Ren grabbed a broken pipe from the debris, braced one foot against a slab, and waited until the one-pointer lunged into the gap. Too narrow for full approach. Good. Its sensor mast pushed through first. Ren drove the pipe sideways into the mast and used the wall as leverage, not strength. The mast bent, but the robot shoved forward, forcing the pipe back toward his chest. His ribs screamed. He nearly lost grip. No.
He changed angle, let the robot's own pressure slide the pipe upward, then snapped it down with all his weight. The mast broke. Chime. Eight. The robot collapsed halfway into the gap, blocking the easiest exit. Bad. Useful. Maybe useful. Ren coughed dust and pain out of his throat. The girl stared at him.
"What's your Quirk?"
"Not relevant""That was relevant!"
"Can you sit up?"
"My arm is pinned!"
"Other arm. Core. Sit up as much as possible without pulling shoulder" She tried. Pain twisted her face. Too much.
"Stop" He looked up. The Zero Pointer's shadow moved across the dust above them. Not directly overhead. Close enough that the light changed. Ren felt his breath catch. Not from ribs. Fear response. Massive moving object. Unknown path. Candidate trapped. No direct solution. Look first. He crawled around the broken robot and inspected the slab pinning her. It was not as heavy as the earlier facade piece trapping the boy's leg, but it lay across the column at an angle that made direct lifting dangerous.
If he pulled wrong, the column could roll deeper into her shoulder. He needed more hands. Ren turned toward the street and shouted through the dust.
"Need lift assist! Candidate pinned!" No one stopped. He shouted again.
"Pinned candidate! Rescue points!" A boy with armor-like skin slowed. Ren recognized him from earlier. The candidate who had destroyed a two-pointer by tackling through a storefront. The boy looked toward the Zero Pointer. Then toward Ren. Then toward the direction other candidates were fleeing. His face showed the entire argument. Ren pointed at the pinned girl.
"She's trapped. Ten seconds to lift" The armored boy cursed and ran over. Good. He crashed to a stop beside the debris.
"Where?" Ren pointed.
"Do not yank. Lift this edge. Slow. If column rolls, stop" The armored boy crouched, fingers digging under the slab.
"I can lift more than this""Not the point. Control matters""Got it" He lifted. Too fast. The pinned girl screamed.
"Slow!" Ren snapped The boy froze. Ren shoved a brick-like chunk under the slab to hold the slight lift.
"Again. Two centimeters""Two what?"
"Small""Then say small!"
"Small!" The boy lifted again. This time better. The slab shifted. The column rolled half a degree toward the girl's neck. Ren's hand shot out and caught the column edge. Bad. His palm tore open against rough concrete. Pain flared hot and wet. He held anyway.
"Stop" The armored boy stopped. The girl sobbed. Ren looked at her trapped sleeve. The fabric was caught more than flesh.
"Can you slide your arm backward?"
"I don't""Try" She pulled. Nothing. Ren glanced at the Zero Pointer. It turned again, chasing noise deeper in the city. Its tail or rear section smashed into a building corner. More debris fell. Time collapsing. Ren pulled a small utility knife from his first aid pouch. Approved because it was blunt-tipped and meant for cutting bandages. Barely enough. He saw the armored boy look at it.
"Is that allowed?"
"It is medical""You're cutting her?"
"Sleeve" The pinned girl's eyes widened.
"Do it" Ren slid the flat tip under the fabric and cut carefully, awkward angle, raw palm protesting each motion. The sleeve resisted, then tore. The trapped fabric loosened.
"Now pull your arm back. Slow" She did. This time the arm came free. The armored boy exhaled. Ren let go of the column. It rolled into the space where her shoulder had been. All three stared at it for one second. Then the Zero Pointer stepped again. The ground jumped.
"Move" Ren said The girl tried to stand and collapsed immediately. Leg not clear? No. Shock. Dizziness. Maybe ankle. The armored boy grabbed her under one arm. Ren grabbed the other. His ribs hated it. He ignored the complaint and helped drag her away from the debris, around the broken one-pointer, toward the lee of a building wall still mostly intact. The girl's breathing turned ragged.
"Head injury?" Ren asked She blinked too slowly.
"What?"
"What is your name?"
"Mika""Full name?"
"Mika Senda""Exam center?"
"C""Quirk?"
"Glass skin. Hardening. I couldn't activate when the debris hit. I panicked" Her voice broke on the last word. Ren filed the information. Conscious. Oriented. Emotional distress. Forehead cut. Possible ankle sprain. Arm freed. No immediate severe bleeding.
"Stay here. Press this to your forehead" He handed her a clean gauze pad from the pouch. She took it with shaking fingers. The armored boy looked at Ren.
"You good?"
"No" He blinked. Ren flexed his bleeding palm.
"Functional""That is not the same thing""No" The armored boy smiled briefly despite the siren.
"I'm Tetsu""Ren""Your Quirk?"
"Later" The Zero Pointer's foot smashed down two streets over. A wave of dust rolled across the avenue. Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more. Candidates screamed. Tetsu looked toward it.
"We should run""Yes" Mika grabbed Ren's sleeve.
"Don't leave me" Ren looked at her hand. Then at her leg. Then at the route. She could not move quickly alone. Tetsu could carry her, maybe, but he was heavy and armored, and the Zero Pointer was driving candidates toward the far exit corridors. Carrying would slow them. Ren's body offered pain reports again. Ribs: worsening. Palm: bleeding. Shoulder: stiff. Thigh: bruised. Decision space: narrowing. Do not become second casualty. Do not abandon casualty if evacuation possible. He looked at Tetsu.
"Can you carry her?"
"Yes""Will it slow you too much?" Tetsu hesitated. Good. Honesty.
"Maybe" Ren looked at Mika.
"Can your legs move if supported?" She nodded quickly. Too quickly.
"Stand" Tetsu helped her up. She cried out when weight hit her right ankle. Sprain likely. Not broken? Unknown. Ren moved to her other side.
"Three-person support. Tetsu takes weight. I guide direction" Tetsu frowned.
"You're hurt too""Yes""Bad?"
"Not yet""That is a terrible answer""Move" They moved. Not fast. Not enough. The artificial city turned into a collapsing map around them. The Zero Pointer was not targeting them specifically, but it did not need to. Its size made intention almost irrelevant. Buildings cracked. Dust erased sightlines. Fleeing candidates collided at intersections. Smaller robots still active in the chaos became secondary predators, chasing anyone who moved too slowly.
Ren guided Tetsu and Mika through a side route he had mapped on entry, avoiding the main avenue where most candidates ran. Left alley. Down service road. Through broken storefront. Cross narrow street. Avoid open plaza. His ribs punished each direction call. His palm left red marks on Mika's sleeve. He hated that. A three-pointer, damaged and dragging one leg, emerged from the storefront ahead. Tetsu swore. Ren assessed. Large. Slow. One arm functional. Sensor intact. Blocking route.
Cannot fight while supporting Mika. Alternative route: alley right, partially blocked by debris, narrow but possible.
"Right" Tetsu turned. Mika stumbled. The three-pointer swung its arm. Ren shoved Mika forward and stepped back to redirect the blow because apparently his body still had not learned democracy. The arm clipped his left shoulder. Not full. Enough. The world flashed white. He hit the wall hard and slid down half a step before forcing his legs under him. Tetsu shouted "Ren!"
"Go right!" The three-pointer rotated toward him. Good. Bad. Ren pushed off the wall and ran left, away from Mika and Tetsu, drawing the robot's sensor. Pain turned the street into pulses. He could not outrun it long. He did not need long. A cracked overhead sign hung above the storefront by two bent supports. The three-pointer's shoulder had already damaged one. Ren grabbed a fallen metal rod from the ground, planted his feet, and threw it upward. It hit the sign. Nothing. Damn it. The robot closed.
Ren grabbed a brick-like debris chunk with his bleeding hand and threw again. This one struck the remaining support. The sign dropped. It did not fall on the robot. It swung. The three-pointer's head turned toward the movement. Ren ran under the swing path. The robot's arm followed. The sign smashed into its sensor unit at the same time its arm hit the storefront column. Metal shrieked. The head unit cracked. No chime. Of course. Ren ducked behind the column as the robot's arm pulled free. Then Tetsu came back.
"No" Ren started Tetsu lowered his shoulder and slammed into the robot's damaged leg with his armor hardened fully, mass and Quirk turning his body into a living battering ram. The three-pointer toppled sideways. Ren moved because falling objects had become a recurring personal theme. The robot crashed into the storefront and its cracked head unit struck the ground. Chime. Three. Tetsu's point. Good. Also idiotic. Ren stared at him.
"Mika?"
"Behind the corner. I set her down""You came back?"
"You were about to get flattened""That was not the plan""Your plan sucked" Ren opened his mouth. Closed it. Fair. The ground trembled again. They ran back to Mika. She was sitting against the wall, pressing gauze to her forehead, face pale but focused.
"Good?" Ren asked"No!"
"Functional?" She stared at him. Tetsu said "That means good enough" Mika laughed once, almost hysterical.
"Functional" They kept moving. The exit boundary was not literal, but the exam zone had safe corridors marked by staff lights where candidates were supposed to retreat once the Zero Pointer made continued engagement impractical. Ren saw one through dust: a line of blue lamps along a covered passage. Twenty meters. Then fifteen. Then a one-pointer rolled into their path. Ren almost laughed. It was absurd. A one-point robot now had the audacity to matter. Tetsu shifted Mika's weight.
"I'll""No" Ren stepped forward. The one-pointer charged. He did not attack. He moved aside at the last moment and let it pass, then kicked its rear leg from behind. Weak. Enough to turn it. Not enough to disable. Tetsu grabbed the robot by its front plate with one armored hand and smashed it headfirst into the wall. Chime. One. Ren looked at him. Tetsu shrugged.
"That one was mine""Yes" They reached the blue-lit passage as the Zero Pointer's foot came down behind them with a sound like the city breaking open. The shockwave knocked Mika to one knee. Ren's ribs refused the sudden twist. For a second, his vision went black at the edges. A hand caught his arm. Mika. She was injured, shaking, bleeding, and still held his sleeve like an anchor.
"Functional?" she asked Ren breathed through pain. In. Out. Again.
"Functional" Tetsu barked a laugh. Then the final siren sounded. Long. Flat. Absolute. The speakers crackled.
"TIME'S UP, LISTENERS!" The robots stopped. All at once. One-pointers froze mid-charge. Three-pointers powered down with heavy mechanical sighs. The Zero Pointer halted with one enormous leg raised, then locked into place as if the apocalypse had been paused for maintenance. Silence did not arrive immediately. First came panting. Coughing. Groaning. A few hysterical laughs. Someone crying. Someone shouting for medical staff. Then, slowly, candidates realized the battle had ended.
Ren stood under the blue lights with Mika leaning against the wall, Tetsu breathing hard beside her, and his own body assembling a list of complaints too long to process in the moment. He looked up at the Zero Pointer. Zero points. Worth nothing. A machine designed to ask what nothing was worth. Medical staff entered fast. So did U. A. personnel. Too fast to have been uninvolved. They had been waiting. Watching. Ren did not know whether that comforted or angered him. A paramedic in a U. A. vest reached them.
"Who is injured?" Mika and Tetsu both pointed at Ren. Ren pointed at Mika.
"She has head laceration, possible ankle sprain, arm compression, shock response. Assess first" The paramedic looked at him. Then at the blood on his palm, the way he held his ribs, the dust on his face, and the fact that his left shoulder sat slightly lower than the right.
"Sit down""Mika first""She's being assessed by my partner. Sit down" Ren looked. Another medic was already kneeling beside Mika. Good. He sat. The act of lowering himself to the ground made every injury gain volume. Ribs. Shoulder. Palm. Hip. Thigh. Knee. Forearm abrasion. Back strain. The list expanded. Debt charges interest. He had spent heavily. A medic crouched in front of him.
"Name?"
"Ren Akiyama""Age?"
"Fifteen""Quirk?" He almost answered Quirkless. The old word rose by habit. He stopped it.
"Unclassified adaptive physiology. Not relevant to acute assessment" The medic paused for half a second. Then continued.
"Pain level?"
"Six at rest. Higher with deep breath""Any head impact?"
"No""Dizziness?"
"Minor""Nausea?"
"No""Can you breathe deeply?" Ren tried. Bad idea. His face must have changed because the medic immediately placed one hand near his shoulder.
"Don't force it. Possible rib contusion. Maybe fracture. We'll check""Contusion more likely""I'll decide that" Fair. The medic cleaned his palm enough to see the tear. Ren watched. Not too deep. Painful. Messy. Manageable. The medic looked at the old burn scar while cleaning around the newer scrapes on his forearm.
"This old?"
"Yes""Any numbness?"
"No""Sensitivity changes?"
"Yes" The medic glanced at him.
"Documented?"
"Yes""Of course it is" Ren did not know whether that was criticism. He was too tired to ask. Candidates were gathered, sorted, treated, and moved with the efficiency Ren had expected from U. A. and still found insulting after a test where so much had been allowed to become dangerous before intervention. He knew the reasons. Simulation needed stress. Hero candidates needed observation. Real heroes could not expect clean conditions. The exam measured more than score. Understanding did not erase anger.
Mika was carried past on a stretcher with her ankle wrapped and her forehead bandaged. She lifted one hand weakly when she saw him.
"Functional" she called The medic treating Ren looked confused. Ren lifted two fingers in acknowledgment. Tetsu walked beside her until staff redirected him. He pointed at Ren.
"That guy helped me score too" Ren closed his eyes.
"I did not""You did""Not important""Maybe for you" Tetsu kept walking before Ren could argue. The medic tightened the bandage around Ren's palm.
"You candidates are all allergic to saying thank you and sitting still""Selection bias""What?"
"Nothing" After initial triage, Ren was taken to the infirmary. Not carried. He refused a stretcher because he could walk and because pride, apparently, survived even when common sense had been educated for years. The medic allowed it only after making him walk slowly and promising to reconsider if dizziness increased. Ren walked. Slowly. Expensively. The path from Battle Center C to the medical building ran along a service road behind the training zone.
Other candidates moved in the same direction, some limping, some supported by staff, some bright-eyed with adrenaline and no understanding yet of how much tomorrow would hurt. A boy with scorched sleeves bragged about twelve points while holding an ice pack to his jaw. A girl sobbed into her phone. Someone vomited into a plastic bag and then apologized to the bag. Ren cataloged because cataloging kept him upright. Score: low. Rescue actions: multiple. Unknown point value. Physical condition: poor but stable.
Likelihood Hero Course admission: reduced. Likelihood General Studies: still possible. Emotional state: unacceptable. He almost laughed at that last one. The infirmary smelled like antiseptic, clean sheets, and Quirk energy. Ren did not know what Quirk energy smelled like. Still, that was the phrase his mind supplied. The room was larger than a normal school infirmary, with multiple beds separated by curtains, bright lights, rolling equipment carts, and staff moving between patients with practiced calm.
At the center of it all stood an elderly woman barely taller than some of the cabinets, with gray hair, a nurse's cap, and an expression sharp enough to cut through denial at twenty paces. Recovery Girl. Ren knew her before anyone said the name. The recognition hit differently from All Might or Izuku or Bakugo. Less like thunder. More like a hand pressing against a bruise before the pain arrived. Healing Quirk. Kiss. Energy cost. Small body. Terrifying authority.
She was standing beside a bed occupied by a boy with a broken arm when Ren entered. She tapped the patient's forehead with a cane and said something too low for Ren to hear. The boy immediately stopped arguing. Good survival instinct. A nurse directed Ren to a bed near the far side.
"Sit here. Wait for examination" Ren sat. The bed was too soft. That made pain spread. He breathed shallowly and watched the room. Mika was two beds down, awake and arguing weakly that she did not need to cry anymore. Tetsu sat in a chair with an ice pack on his shoulder, looking far too pleased for someone with a swollen cheek. Blade-elbow had a bandage across his forehead and was insisting that throwing a cone had ruined his rhythm.
The glue candidate from earlier sat with both hands in cooling wraps, staring at the floor. Battle Center C had survived in fragments. Ren looked for tail candidate but did not see him. A nurse approached with a chart.
"Name?"
"Ren Akiyama""Battle Center C?"
"Yes""Known Quirk?"
"Unclassified adaptive physiology. Officially Quirkless in older records" The nurse's pen paused. Recovery Girl's head turned from across the room. Ren felt it. A direct line of attention. The nurse continued more carefully.
"Documented medical history?" Ren handed over the folded copy from his bag. The nurse took it. Recovery Girl appeared beside the bed less than a minute later. That was concerning. She looked at the paper first. Then at Ren. Then at the bandaged palm, the scraped forearm, the way he held his left side, the old burn scar visible beneath dust and torn sleeve, the bruise forming at his shoulder, and the expression he was failing to make neutral.
"Hm" she said Ren did not like how much information she put into one sound. Recovery Girl lifted his left wrist gently and examined the old scar.
"This one is not from today""No""Burn?"
"Yes""How old?"
"Seven years" Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"You track it""Yes""Of course you do" Second medical professional today with that phrase. Pattern. She read the disclosure again.
"Adaptive physiology, unclassified. No formal Quirk confirmation. Subtle sensory and recovery differences after tissue stress""Yes""And still you came into my infirmary looking like you tried to fight a building""I avoided fighting the larger building" Tetsu laughed from his chair. Recovery Girl's eyes snapped toward him. He stopped. She looked back at Ren.
"Do not get clever with the person deciding whether to kiss your ribs better" Ren closed his mouth. Good advice. She placed two fingers along his rib line with clinical precision. Pain flared. His breath caught.
"Likely contusion. Maybe hairline fracture. We'll image if needed. Shoulder?"
"Impact""Palm?"
"Tear from concrete edge""Head?"
"No impact""You are certain?"
"Yes" She looked at his eyes.
"Annoyingly certain" Ren did not answer. She checked his pupils anyway. Then she turned his left forearm, inspecting the old burn and newer chain abrasion. Her expression shifted. Not alarm. Interest. Worse.
"The scar tissue is unusually flexible for the history described" Ren went still. Recovery Girl noticed. Of course.
"Does it hurt?"
"Not now""Sensation?"
"Altered heat and cold perception""Compared to surrounding skin?"
"Yes""Stable over time?"
"Yes. Minor variation with fatigue, illness, stress" She looked up at him.
"How many notebooks?" Ren stared. Tetsu whispered "What?" Ren answered before thinking.
"Active or archived?" Recovery Girl closed her eyes. Mika laughed from two beds down, then winced. Recovery Girl opened her eyes again.
"You and I are going to have a conversation after you stop pretending pain is a personality trait" Ren's face warmed.
"It is not""No. It is a warning system. Yours appears to have been given a committee" Ren did not know how to respond. She tapped his knee with her cane.
"Lie down" He did. Carefully. Badly. Recovery Girl examined him with hands that were firm, efficient, and absolutely unimpressed by silence. When she pressed near the ribs again, Ren kept his face still. Her cane tapped the bed frame once.
"I can see your pulse in your neck, boy. Stoicism is not invisibility" Ren exhaled. It hurt.
"Pain level seven with pressure""Better" She looked at the nurse.
"Clean the abrasions. X-ray for ribs if breathing worsens. I'll use a light heal on the palm and rib bruising, but not enough to exhaust him. He is already depleted" Ren looked at her.
"Energy cost" Her eyes sharpened.
"You know how my Quirk works?"
"Public information""Surface-level public information""Your healing accelerates the patient's own recovery using their energy. It can close injuries but does not create resources from nothing. Overuse risks exhaustion" Recovery Girl studied him. Then sighed.
"Wonderful. Another child who reads enough to become difficult" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"I have been told that""Not enough, apparently" She leaned over and kissed his bandaged palm through a sterile contact barrier prepared by the nurse. Warmth moved through his hand. Not like heat. Not like fever. Like being pulled forward from the inside. The torn skin tightened, burned, then settled. Fatigue followed almost immediately, heavier than expected. Ren's fingers curled. Recovery Girl watched closely.
"Interesting" Ren disliked that word. The healing did not feel wrong. But his body responded around it strangely. The old scar prickled. The chain abrasion along his forearm warmed. His ribs throbbed once, deep and sharp, then dulled. Not healed fully. Improved. Paid for. He felt the cost as a sudden hollowing beneath the sternum, as if breakfast had become yesterday. Recovery Girl's eyes moved from his palm to his face.
"You felt that clearly""Yes""Too clearly?"
"No. Differently""Hm" Again. She kissed near his rib area through the fabric and barrier with equal clinical briskness. This time the sensation was worse. His breath caught. Pain flared outward, then folded inward, compressed into an ache that spread through his side. Fatigue rolled over him so suddenly his vision dimmed for a second. A hand pressed his shoulder. Recovery Girl.
"Breathe shallow. Do not fight it" He obeyed. Mostly. His body wanted food, sleep, and several years of reconsideration. When the dizziness passed, Recovery Girl looked deeply irritated. Not at him. At the data, maybe.
"You are underfed for the amount of nonsense you attempted today""I ate breakfast""And then spent it all" That was fair. A nurse placed a sweet recovery drink in his hand. Ren drank without argument. The taste was terrible. The energy was immediate enough to be suspicious but likely psychological. Recovery Girl examined his palm again.
"Better. Not fixed. Do not use that hand aggressively for several days" Ren almost said he had no intention of using it aggressively. Then remembered the day so far.
"Yes""Ribs will hurt. If pain worsens, report immediately""Yes""And no secret testing to see whether my Quirk changed your scar response" Ren went still. She smiled without warmth.
"Your face is quieter than your body" Ren looked away.
"I was not planning to""Good. Then you will have no trouble not doing it" This woman was dangerous. Ren almost respected her instantly. Almost. A sudden commotion rose near the infirmary entrance. Staff moved fast. A stretcher rolled in. Ren turned his head before thinking. The first thing he saw was green hair. Then blood. Then angles. Wrong angles.
Izuku Midoriya lay on the stretcher with his right arm swollen and discolored beyond anything training could explain, fingers bent, skin split in places where force had exceeded structure. One leg was damaged too, less horribly but enough that every movement made the nurses around him speak faster. His face was pale, sweat-soaked, and strangely peaceful for a boy whose body had just learned a new definition of cost.
Uraraka walked behind the stretcher, crying and trying to explain through hiccups that he had saved her, that she had been trapped, that the huge robot was coming, that he jumped, that he flew, that his arm, his leg, she had made him float afterward, she should have done it sooner, she was sorry, she was so sorry. Ren heard only pieces. His mind filled the rest. Zero Pointer. No reward. Brown-haired girl. Green lightning. A body too small for miracle. Izuku's eyes opened halfway as the stretcher passed.
They found Ren. For one second, the infirmary disappeared. There was only the space between two beds. Izuku's mouth moved. No sound came out. Ren did not need sound. He knew the question. Did I look first? Ren looked at the destroyed arm. At Uraraka crying. At Recovery Girl's face tightening with professional anger. At the way Izuku still seemed more worried about her than himself. Admiration rose first. Hot. Painful. Impossible to deny. Then anger. Then envy so sharp it made him ashamed. Miracle. There it was.
Not theory. Not fragment. Not memory. Reality. Izuku Midoriya had moved with a power that should not exist in a Quirkless body, and his body had paid for it like a vessel asked to hold lightning without being taught the shape of a storm. Ren's own ribs hurt. His palm throbbed. His body had spent the exam scraping value from debris, leverage, timing, and other people's willingness to listen. Izuku had shattered the sky. And himself. Recovery Girl moved toward the stretcher.
"Put him there. Carefully. If anyone jostles that arm, I will make you regret choosing healthcare" Staff obeyed with religious speed. Uraraka stood near the bed, shaking.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. He saved me. I couldn't move. The robot was coming and he" Recovery Girl snapped "Sit before you fall over too" Uraraka sat. Izuku turned his head slightly toward Ren again. His lips moved. This time sound came, barely.
"I thought" Recovery Girl leaned over him.
"Do not talk" Izuku tried anyway.
"While moving" Ren's chest tightened. Think while moving. He had remembered. Maybe not enough. Maybe exactly enough. Ren's hands curled against the sheet.
"You looked first?" Ren asked Recovery Girl glared at him. Uraraka answered through tears.
"He did. He looked at me. Then at the robot. Then he ran" Izuku's eyes closed. Ren did not know whether the sound that left him was relief or fury. Both, probably. Recovery Girl placed a hand near Izuku's face.
"You jumped at a Zero Pointer with a body that clearly had no idea what to do with its own Quirk" Izuku's eyes opened weakly. Ren went still. Own Quirk. The words landed in the room with clinical certainty. Uraraka did not react to their strangeness through panic. Staff were busy. Ren heard them like a verdict reversed too late. Own Quirk. So it had happened. Somewhere between the library and today, Izuku had received the miracle. And told no one Ren knew. Or could not tell. Or did not understand how.
One For All thundered at the edge of memory, still incomplete, still dangerous. Recovery Girl kissed Izuku's cheek. Healing energy moved through the room strongly enough that Ren felt the hairs on his arms rise. Izuku's body reacted violently. The swelling eased faster than natural recovery. Split skin closed. Broken structures corrected enough to stop being catastrophic, but not enough to erase the evidence. His face twisted in pain even through exhaustion. The cost hit him like a second injury. His body sagged.
Recovery Girl pulled back with a scowl.
"Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. You children arrive here with ambition where your survival instincts should be" She looked across the room. Somehow at both Izuku and Ren. Ren looked away first. Cowardice, maybe. Or restraint. Izuku slept. Uraraka sat beside his bed, still crying quietly but no longer panicking. Recovery Girl checked her next and found bruises, scrapes, and exhaustion more than serious injury. She still lectured her until Uraraka apologized to the floor.
Ren lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling. The infirmary ceiling was white. Of course it was. Important ceilings often were. His body ached in measured layers. Recovery Girl's Quirk had dulled the worst edges but left the cost behind. He felt hollow, hungry, heavy. His palm itched under new dressing. His ribs no longer stabbed with every breath but still punished carelessness. His shoulder throbbed. Pain as information. Not permission. Not proof. Information.
Across the room, Izuku slept with one arm wrapped and elevated, face slack with exhaustion. Even healed, the damage remained obvious enough to make Ren's stomach twist. Ren had thought seeing the miracle would answer something. It did not. It made the question worse. If Izuku had a Quirk now, then why did he look like a boy crushed by a gift? If power could arrive and still leave the body unprepared, then what exactly had Ren envied all these years?
If the exam rewarded that moment, would it reward the save or the self-destruction? If U. A. saw both of them, what would it choose? A boy with a miracle too large for his bones. Or a boy with maps, bruises, and seven confirmed points. Ren closed his eyes. The answer was obvious enough to hurt. Later, when the first wave of treatment ended and staff had space to breathe, Recovery Girl returned to Ren's bed with his chart.
"You may go home after observation unless symptoms worsen" Ren opened his eyes.
"Exam results?"
"Will arrive later""I know. I meant medical clearance""You are cleared to be sore, exhausted, and irritating elsewhere""Thank you" She looked at him over the chart.
"Do not thank me yet. I reviewed the field notes attached to your triage" Ren waited.
"Multiple candidate assists. Improvised rescue from debris. Evacuation under Zero Pointer movement. Continued activity despite injuries" Her eyes sharpened.
"One of those is admirable. One is foolish. Several are both" Ren said nothing. Recovery Girl pulled the curtain halfway around his bed, giving them something like privacy.
"You have old injuries""Yes""Not just the burn" Ren's pulse changed. Her eyes moved to the monitor beside him. Betrayal by machine.
"Training injuries" he said"Some. Not all" He looked at her. She sat on the stool beside the bed without asking permission.
"You are not the first child I have seen who thinks pain can be organized into virtue" Ren's mouth went dry.
"I don't""Not in those words" He looked at the sheet. Recovery Girl's voice lost some sharpness.
"That boy over there shattered himself because his instinct outran his preparation" Ren did not need to look to know she meant Izuku.
"You are different. Your preparation outruns your permission to be human" Ren stared at her. The words were too accurate to process quickly.
"That is an assumption""It is a diagnosis of annoyance""That is not medical""I am old. I get extra categories" Despite himself, Ren almost smiled. Almost. Recovery Girl leaned closer.
"Whatever your Quirk is or is not, listen carefully. A body that adapts to damage can still be damaged. A body that tolerates pain can still break. A child who learns to function while hurt can become very useful to people who should have protected him instead" Ren stopped breathing. Not because of ribs. Because of the sentence. Recovery Girl saw it land. Good. Terrible.
"Do not make yourself easy to spend" she said Ren's throat tightened.
"I'm trying to become a hero""Yes. That is why I said it" Across the room, Izuku stirred in his sleep. Uraraka leaned forward immediately. Recovery Girl followed Ren's glance.
"Same advice for him, if he survives long enough to hear it properly""He will" The certainty came out too fast. Recovery Girl turned back to him.
"You know him?"
"Yes""How well?" Ren looked at Izuku. Green hair against white pillow. Wrapped arm. Body too small for power.
"Not enough""Hm" A third hm. This one felt less like suspicion and more like recognition. Recovery Girl stood.
"Rest until your parents arrive. They have been called" Ren's eyes widened.
"They what?"
"You are a minor who came in injured""That was unnecessary""It was mandatory""My mother will panic""Good. Perhaps she can teach you" Ren sat up too quickly. Pain corrected him immediately. Recovery Girl pushed him back down with one finger to the forehead.
"Stay" He stayed. Not because she was strong. Because she was right and had no patience for making correctness polite. His parents arrived sixteen minutes later. Hana entered first. Daichi behind her. Ren knew the exact moment they saw him. Not because they spoke. Because both stopped. He had been cleaned, treated, bandaged, and partially healed. That did not make him look fine. It made him look like a boy who had been made presentable after being mishandled by a city. Hana's face went white. Daichi's jaw locked.
Ren sat up more slowly this time.
"I'm functional" Hana made a sound halfway between laugh and sob and crossed the room fast enough that Recovery Girl looked ready to scold her too. She touched his face first. Then his hair. Then his shoulder. Then stopped because everything seemed possibly injured.
"What happened?"
"Practical exam" That was the wrong answer. Daichi closed his eyes. Hana looked like she might strangle him or hug him and could not decide which would worsen the injuries. Recovery Girl appeared beside them.
"He has rib bruising, possibly minor fracture but currently stable, abrasions, bruising, a palm laceration, shoulder trauma, and severe common sense deficiency" Ren said "That last one is not" Daichi pointed at him.
"Do not" Ren closed his mouth. Hana sat on the edge of the bed carefully.
"Were you reckless?" Ren looked at her. The easy answer was no. The true answer was harder.
"I looked first" Her eyes filled. Daichi's expression shifted. Not relief. Not approval. Understanding, painful and incomplete.
"What did you see?" he asked Ren looked past them. Izuku slept. Uraraka whispered something to him though he could not hear. Mika laughed weakly at something Tetsu said near the other beds. Blade-elbow complained about his bandage to a nurse who ignored him. The infirmary hummed with the aftermath of children trying to become heroes by surviving a machine worth no points. Ren looked back at his parents.
"People who could not move fast enough" Hana covered her mouth. Daichi sat in the chair beside the bed. For a while, none of them spoke. Then Hana reached for his uninjured hand. He let her hold it. This time, he did not turn the contact into data. Recovery Girl watched from a distance. Ren could feel her watching. He suspected she did not miss much. When he was finally discharged, Izuku was still asleep. Uraraka had been moved to another chair with a blanket around her shoulders. Tetsu waved from across the room.
Mika lifted her gauze pad in farewell like a flag. Ren stood slowly. His parents hovered. He endured it. Before leaving, he looked once more at Izuku. Miracle. Damage. Answer. Failure point. Friend? Not enough data. Ren adjusted his bag with his good hand. Izuku's eyes opened a fraction. Half-asleep. Barely aware. Still, somehow, he found Ren. His lips moved. This time Ren heard him.
"Did you pass?" Ren looked at him. Then at the wrapped arm. Then at the room. The question was absurd. Perfectly Izuku.
"I don't know" Izuku's eyes drifted closed. Ren waited one second. Then said "Did you?" Izuku's mouth twitched faintly.
"I don't know" For some reason, that almost made Ren laugh. Almost. Recovery Girl pointed her cane toward the exit.
"Out" Ren obeyed. Outside the infirmary, evening had begun to soften the campus. U. A.' s buildings caught the low light and turned gold at the edges, as if the school had not just watched hundreds of children throw themselves at machines to prove they were worth teaching. Hana walked on Ren's left. Daichi on his right. Neither touched him unless he slowed. Both were ready to. The gate waited ahead. The same gate. Different direction. Ren had entered with maps.
He left with bruises, bandages, seven confirmed points, unknown rescue credit, and the image of Izuku Midoriya breaking himself against the sky. The exam was over. The measurement had begun.
