Chương 13: Not Enough
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 160 chương · ~55 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The day after the U. A. entrance exam, Ren Akiyama learned that pain was better when it had something obvious to blame. Bruises were simple. They occupied space. His left ribs hurt when he breathed too deeply, twisted too quickly, reached too far, stood too suddenly, sat too carelessly, laughed by accident, coughed, sneezed, or forgot for one merciful second that a training robot had clipped him hard enough to leave his body offended by oxygen.
His palm hurt less after Recovery Girl's treatment, but the healing skin itched under the dressing with a persistence that made concentration difficult. The chain abrasion along his forearm pulled when he flexed his wrist. His shoulder had become a deep, ugly ache that spread into his neck by evening. His hip had bloomed purple beneath the skin. His thigh had a stripe of tenderness where a one-pointer had struck him. His left knee complained about stairs. All of that was manageable.
Pain with a location could be cataloged. Pain with a mechanism could be explained. Pain with a predicted recovery curve could be endured. The other thing was harder. The other thing did not have edges. It sat beneath the bruises, under the bandages, behind the ribs, quieter than injury and less honest. The exam was over. The result was not here. That meant Ren had no system to act inside. No robots to disable. No trapped candidates to move. No route to choose. No immediate danger to make his body useful.
Only waiting. Waiting was not rest. Waiting was unstructured exposure. He wrote that down on the first morning and immediately regretted how accurate it felt. Hana made him stay home from school for two days. Ren argued exactly once. He lost. Not because his argument was weak, though it was not strong. He had no fever, no concussion, no severe fracture confirmed, and Recovery Girl had cleared him for home observation. With modified activity, he could have attended classes.
But Hana listened to his case, placed a bowl of rice porridge in front of him, and said "You walked out of U. A. looking like a collapsed building had opinions about you" Daichi, traitor that he was, added "Several opinions" Ren looked at both of them.
"I can attend school with bruised ribs""Yes" Hana said "And you can stay home with them""That is not a medical argument""No. It is a mother argument""Those are less regulated""They are more enforceable" Daichi raised his cup.
"She has you there" Ren considered appealing. Then he tried to breathe too deeply, failed to hide the pain in time, and watched both parents become immovable. So he stayed home. The first day was tolerable because pain still demanded attention. The second was worse because pain became familiar. On the third, he returned to school and discovered that ordinary life had a talent for being insulting after significant events. The classroom looked the same. Desks. Windows. Chalk dust. Posters.
Students complaining about homework, rumors, weather, teachers, food, exams, futures. Ren entered with his left side taped beneath his shirt, his palm bandaged, and his expression arranged into something non-inviting. Several classmates looked at him. Some knew where he had been. Some had taken other entrance exams. Some had no interest beyond visible injury. Masaru Enomoto spotted him first. He leaned back in his chair and squinted.
"You look like hell""Good morning""That was not a disagreement""It was a greeting" Masaru stood, walked over, and examined Ren with the open disrespect of someone who had earned enough familiarity to be annoying.
"How many robots?"
"Seven confirmed" Masaru blinked.
"That's it?" Ren looked at him. Masaru winced.
"Sorry""No. Accurate reaction" Ren moved toward his seat. Masaru followed.
"Rescue?"
"Unknown""You did rescue?"
"Yes""How much?"
"Enough to interfere with scoring efficiency" Masaru stared.
"You saved people and you're mad it was inefficient?" Ren placed his bag down carefully.
"That is not what I said""That is exactly what your face said""My face is not a source""Your face is a very loud source for a guy who thinks he's unreadable" Ren sat. His ribs disliked it. Masaru noticed. His expression shifted from teasing to concern fast enough that Ren looked away.
"You okay?"
"Functional""Everyone hates that answer, right?"
"Yes""Good. I'm everyone" Class began before Ren could respond. The day passed slowly. Teachers congratulated students who had completed entrance exams. A boy applying to a technical school had already received preliminary acceptance. A girl aiming for a general academic track spent lunch pretending she was not worried. Two students who had taken a local hero-program assessment compared bruises in the hallway like currency. Ren tried not to listen. He failed.
At lunch, Masaru sat across from him with two bread rolls, a sports drink, and the posture of someone preparing to ask a question badly. Ren looked at him.
"No" Masaru paused.
"I didn't ask yet""You were going to ask whether I thought I passed" Masaru closed his mouth. Ren opened his lunch. Masaru leaned forward.
"Well?" Ren stared.
"You are not subtle""Subtle still isn't a noodle""Progress" Masaru huffed.
"Do you?" Ren broke apart a piece of grilled fish with his chopsticks, buying three seconds. Villain points: seven confirmed. Possible shared assist: uncertain. Rescue actions: multiple. Injuries: significant. Quirk: unclassified. Exam strategy: effective under rescue conditions, inefficient under point destruction. Comparison to likely admitted candidates: poor destructive output, strong situational awareness. Unknown rescue scoring value. Unknown committee priorities. Unknown cutoff. Unknown whether U. A.
wanted students who could create value without power or simply admired the idea from a safe distance.
"I think I am near the edge of something" Ren said Masaru chewed that over.
"Good edge or bad edge?"
"Yes" Masaru sighed.
"You are exhausting""I know" The results were scheduled to arrive by mail and digital notice within the week. That was cruelly broad. Ren checked the portal three times the first day. Then four. Then seven. On the fourth evening, Hana took his phone and placed it inside a kitchen drawer. Ren looked at the drawer. Then at her.
"This does not change server behavior""No. It changes yours""I need to know when the result arrives""The result will continue existing if you do not witness it within the first thirty seconds""That is philosophically debatable" Hana folded her arms.
"Do you want to debate philosophy or eat dinner?" Ren glanced toward the drawer. Daichi said from the stove "Choose dinner. Philosophy is rarely served with miso" Ren ate dinner. Afterward, he sat with APPLICATIONS open and tried to write a post-exam analysis. It went badly. The facts were simple. The meaning was not. He wrote: Battle Center C Post-Exam Review Confirmed villain points: 7. Potential shared points: uncertain. Rescue interventions: Trapped leg candidate under facade slab before Zero Pointer.
Mika Senda pinned by collapsed structure. Evacuation support with Tetsu. Directional assistance to multiple candidates. Hazard warnings. Personal errors: Excessive physical cost per point. Poor initial scoring route efficiency. Inadequate strength for independent debris lift. Took impacts that could have been avoided with better positioning. Failed to disengage after rib trauma. Continued activity despite degraded precision. Used body as stopgap tool. He stared at the last line. Used body as stopgap tool.
Recovery Girl's voice returned. Do not make yourself easy to spend. Ren crossed out the line. Then rewrote it beneath the crossed-out version because crossing it out did not make it false. Hana entered his room with clean laundry and stopped at the doorway.
"You are doing the thing" Ren did not look up.
"I do many things""The thing where you turn an injury into a management report so you do not have to feel it" His pencil stopped. That was unfair. No. That was accurate. Unfairly accurate. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
"I need to analyze the exam""Yes""And?"
"You also need to be a person who is disappointed and scared" Ren's jaw tightened.
"The result has not arrived" She stepped into the room and placed the folded clothes on his bed.
"No. But you have already begun punishing yourself for every possible version of it" Ren looked at the page. Personal errors. Seven lines. More waiting underneath. His mother sat beside the clothes. Not on his chair. Not crowding. Just present.
"I am not punishing myself" Hana looked at him. Ren exhaled carefully.
"I am identifying weaknesses""Yes. And sometimes you use identifying weaknesses the way other people use knives" He could not answer immediately. His ribs hurt. His palm itched. His throat felt tight in a way no injury explained. Hana's gaze softened.
"I am proud of you" The sentence hit wrong. Ren's hand tightened around the pencil.
"You do not know the result""I know what Recovery Girl told us. I know you helped people""That may not be enough""I did not say it was enough for U. A." Ren looked up. Hana's eyes were wet but steady.
"I said I am proud of you" There was a difference. He hated that there was a difference. He wanted enough for U. A. He wanted enough for the gate. He wanted enough for the field that measured power and decided who entered the place where power became legitimacy. Pride without admission felt like a consolation prize wrapped in love. That made him feel cruel. His mother knew. Of course she knew. She stood and touched his hair once.
"This is not me asking you to stop wanting it" Ren said nothing.
"It is me asking you not to make U. A. the only witness allowed to count" She left before he could decide whether to argue. Ren looked at APPLICATIONS for a long time. Then he added one more line under personal errors. Treating external validation as only valid measurement. He stared at it. Then wrote: Still need external validation for institutional access. Both true. Annoying. Useful. The result arrived on the sixth day. Not dramatically. No storm. No power outage.
No strange sense of destiny moving through the apartment. It was a Saturday morning. The sky was clear for the first time in a week. Sunlight crossed the kitchen table. Hana was cutting fruit. Daichi was reading news on his tablet and making the face he made when politics had disappointed him again. Ren was reviewing movement restrictions and pretending not to check the clock. The doorbell rang. All three went still. Then Daichi stood too fast and hit his knee on the table.
"Damn it" Hana whispered "Daichi""I'm fine" Ren stood. His ribs objected. Hana's eyes snapped to him.
"I'm fine""No one here is fine" Daichi muttered, limping toward the door He returned holding a slim envelope and a small package marked with U. A.' s emblem. Ren felt his pulse become a physical thing. Daichi placed both on the table. No one touched them. The emblem looked too clean. Too official. Too small for the number of years pressed beneath it. Hana sat slowly. Daichi remained standing. Ren looked at the envelope first, then the package. Holographic display device, likely. U. A. liked theatrics.
Of course they did. A rejection letter would have been kinder on paper. That thought arrived before he could stop it. He sat. His hands were steady. Too steady. Hana noticed.
"Do you want us here?"
"Yes" The answer surprised him. It surprised them too. Daichi sat immediately. Hana reached for his hand, then stopped halfway. Ren looked at her. Then placed his uninjured hand over hers. Her fingers closed around it. He opened the package with his right hand. Inside was a small projection disk, a printed instruction card, and an official letter sealed within the envelope. Ren activated the disk. Light rose from the center of the kitchen table. For one second, static. Then a figure appeared. Not All Might.
Ren knew before the image resolved, and hated that some part of him had expected the Symbol of Peace anyway. The projection showed a small white-furred animal-like figure in a neat suit, with black eyes too intelligent to be harmless and a smile that seemed polite only because it had chosen not to be something else. Principal Nezu. Ren had seen him in U. A. materials. He had also seen him in fragments. A clever animal. A school. A mind too large for its body. A smile that watched more than it revealed.
The projection inclined its head.
"Ren Akiyama" Hana's hand tightened around Ren's. Daichi leaned forward. Nezu's voice was bright, calm, and perfectly controlled.
"First, allow me to congratulate you on completing U. A. High School's entrance examination. The faculty reviewed your written scores, practical performance, medical disclosures, field conduct, and examiner observations with particular care" Particular care. Ren did not move. The kitchen seemed to narrow around the projection.
"Your written examination score was excellent. Your academic preparation, incident analysis background, first aid training, and long-term independent study placed you among the stronger applicants in the academic portion of this year's pool" Daichi exhaled softly. Hana did not. Nezu continued.
"In the practical examination, you achieved seven confirmed villain points. There were additional assist evaluations attached to several robot engagements, but under current scoring rules, these did not materially alter your villain score" Seven. Confirmed. No surprise. Still a blow.
"Your rescue evaluation, however, was notable" Ren's breath stopped. The projection shifted, displaying small silent clips from Battle Center C. Ren wedging a sign into a one-pointer. Ren pushing the glue candidate out of the three-pointer's fall path. Ren dragging the pinned boy behind cover. Ren and Tetsu freeing Mika. Ren guiding evacuation beneath the Zero Pointer's shadow. The clips looked worse from outside. Messier. Smaller. More desperate. Less controlled. He saw himself stumble.
Saw the moment the robot clipped his ribs. Saw how close the falling column came to Mika's head. Saw Tetsu come back for him when the three-pointer had nearly trapped him. He had not known how close that was. His mother made a small sound. Daichi's face hardened. Nezu's voice remained gentle.
"You identified hazards quickly, communicated effectively under pressure, redirected other candidates toward rescue actions, and intervened when examinees were at risk of serious simulated or incidental harm. You received thirty-four rescue points" Thirty-four. The number entered him strangely. Not low. Not nothing. Not enough. He knew before Nezu said it. A total of forty-one. Seven villain. Thirty-four rescue. Forty-one. Close to something. Far from something else. Nezu folded his small paws.
"Your total evaluation placed you in serious consideration. However, after review, the admissions committee has determined that you will not be offered a seat in the Hero Course at this time" The words did not land all at once. They arrived with terrible politeness, one after another, each carrying a piece of a door closing. Not offered. Hero Course. At this time. Hana's fingers tightened almost painfully. Daichi looked at the table. Ren stared at Nezu. The projection continued.
"This decision was not made because your performance lacked courage or value. Rather, the committee identified several concerns. Your direct combat score was below the threshold for Hero Course placement. Your practical methods relied heavily on environmental leverage, candidate cooperation, and personal bodily risk.
While these qualities can be valuable in hero work, your current physical and Quirk profile does not yet demonstrate sufficient independent combat viability for the Hero Course's first-year training load" Ren heard his own breath. In. Out. Careful. Not enough. Nezu's eyes seemed to look through the projection.
"Additionally, medical observers noted that you continued acting despite accumulated injuries in a way that raises concern. Hero training requires courage, but it also requires sustainable judgment. A student who can function while injured is valuable. A student who normalizes being spent may become vulnerable to misuse, by himself or by others" Recovery Girl. Of course. Ren's throat tightened. Daichi closed his eyes. Hana's hand shook once under his. Nezu's smile softened by a degree.
"However, U. A. would be remiss to ignore what you demonstrated. Therefore, we are pleased to offer you admission to U. A. High School's General Studies Department" The kitchen became very quiet. The projection displayed the words. GENERAL STUDIES ADMISSION OFFER CLASS PLACEMENT TO BE PROVIDED UPON ACCEPTANCE Ren looked at them. U. A. Not Hero Course. Inside the building. Wrong door. A road. A consolation. A rejection wearing an offer. All true. All useless in that first second. Nezu continued, mercilessly kind.
"General Studies students may apply for internal transfer opportunities based on academic performance, faculty evaluation, and public competitive events, including the U. A. Sports Festival. Given your profile, we believe this path may allow you to further develop your physical capacity, clarify your Quirk status or lack thereof, refine your judgment, and demonstrate growth under less immediately hazardous conditions" Less immediately hazardous. Ren almost laughed. It would have sounded terrible.
Nezu inclined his head again.
"Ren Akiyama, U. A. saw you. We hope you will choose to continue forward where we can keep watching" The projection flickered. Then ended. The kitchen remained. Sunlight on the table. Fruit half-cut on the counter. Daichi's tablet gone dark. Hana's hand around his. The projection disk cooling in the center of everything. Ren stared at the empty space where Nezu had been. U. A. saw you. Not enough. His body did something strange then. Not a sob. Not anger. Not collapse. It went quiet. Too quiet.
The kind of quiet he had built as a child in clinics and classrooms and playgrounds, where every feeling was sorted before it could become inconvenient. Hana said his name.
"Ren" He looked at the letter. Not the projection disk. The letter. He picked it up and opened it carefully because paper deserved precision even when it carried damage. The formal text repeated the offer. Hero Course: not admitted. General Studies: admitted. Acceptance deadline. Student portal. Uniform information upon confirmation. Medical follow-up recommended before enrollment. Ren read every word. Then again. Daichi's voice was low.
"Say something" Ren looked up. His father's face was more afraid than it had been when Ren came home bandaged. That was interesting. No. Not interesting. Terrible. Ren placed the letter down.
"I received thirty-four rescue points" Hana's eyes filled.
"Yes""Seven villain points" Daichi said "Yes""Forty-one total""Ren""That is not low""No" Daichi said "It is not""It was not enough" Neither parent answered. Because there was no answer that improved the sentence. Ren looked at the General Studies offer.
"Midoriya got in" Hana blinked.
"You don't know that""Yes" Daichi's brow tightened.
"Ren""He had zero villain points likely. But he stopped the Zero Pointer. Saved Uraraka. They will give him rescue points. Enough" Hana looked at Daichi. Daichi looked back. Neither confirmed or denied because neither knew. Ren did. He knew in fragments and logic and the terrible clarity of watching Izuku sleep with a broken miracle inside his bones.
"Bakugo got in too" Ren said Daichi exhaled.
"Likely""Not likely. Yes" No one argued. Bakugo's admission did not need prophecy. It was simply the road the world had paved for him from childhood. Ren looked down at his own hands. One bandaged. One held by his mother. A body that had survived. Helped. Mapped. Warned. Dragged. Lifted. Bled. Not enough. Hana's voice trembled.
"You were admitted to U. A." He closed his eyes. There it was. The sentence that was true and wrong.
"I know""That matters""I know""It is not what you wanted""I know""You can be hurt by that without making the offer meaningless" Ren opened his eyes. His mother was crying now. Quietly. Angrily. Not at him. Not exactly. Maybe at the school. Maybe at the world. Maybe at every door that called itself open while placing him in the corridor. Daichi spoke carefully.
"General Studies is a road" Ren looked at him. His father did not flinch.
"You said it yourself. U. A. is terrain" Ren's mouth tasted bitter.
"I said Hero Course is the goal""Yes""And General Studies is not Hero Course""No" The honesty hurt more than comfort would have. Daichi leaned forward.
"I am not going to insult you by pretending this is the same thing" Ren's throat tightened.
"But I am also not going to let you call being admitted to U. A. nothing because the first door did not open" Ren looked at the projection disk.
"Nezu said they saw me""They did""No. They saw the risk""They saw both""They saw a liability""They offered you admission""To a course that does not train heroes""To a school where transfer is possible""Possible" The word snapped out sharper than intended. Hana flinched. Ren hated himself for that immediately. But the word had already broken the room. Possible. The old country. Potential. Almost. Monitoring recommended. Cannot be excluded. Not at this time. General Studies. Possible transfer. Possible future.
Possible enough to keep him moving. Not enough to let him arrive. Ren stood too quickly. Pain cut through his ribs. Hana reached for him. He stepped back. Not far. Enough.
"I need to write" Daichi's face tightened.
"Ren""I need to write before I say something worse" That stopped them. Hana slowly lowered her hand. Daichi nodded once.
"Door stays open" Ren went to his room. He did not close the door. Not fully. A compromise. He sat at his desk, placed the letter beside APPLICATIONS, and opened to U. A. — ACTIVE. For several minutes, he did nothing. His hand hovered over the page. The first words mattered. Too much. He wanted to write a clean analysis. Scores. Causes. Decisions. Transfer route. Sports Festival. Development plan. Combat insufficiency. Medical risk. Nezu observation. General Studies acceptance. Strategy revision.
He wanted to turn the verdict into terrain immediately. He wanted to survive the feeling by making it useful. Hana would call that the thing. She would be right. Ren set the pencil down. His ribs hurt. His palm itched. His throat burned. He let himself feel the sentence without organizing it. They did not choose me. Not for Hero Course. Not enough. The feeling was not clean. It was childish and adult at the same time. It was the clinic at four. The playground at six. The burn at eight.
The reports at nine, ten, eleven. The library with Izuku. Bakugo laughing. The gate opening. Nezu smiling. It was not fair. It was also understandable. That made it worse. A stupid rejection would have been easier to hate. U. A. had not dismissed him. They had evaluated him carefully and decided the door he wanted was still too dangerous for him to enter. That meant the enemy was not blindness. It was measurement. Ren picked up the pencil. At the top of a new page, he wrote: U. A. RESULT Then the numbers.
Written exam: excellent. Villain points: 7. Rescue points: 34. Total known score: 41. Hero Course: rejected. General Studies: accepted. He stopped. The word rejected sat like a blade. He considered replacing it with not admitted. More accurate. Less honest. He left rejected. Below it, he wrote: Reasons given: Direct combat insufficient. Physical/Quirk profile insufficient for Hero Course training load. Methods rely on environment/cooperation/personal risk. Medical concern: continuing while injured.
Judgment concern: self-spending pattern. Strengths recognized: Academic score. Hazard identification. Communication. Rescue action. Candidate coordination. Improvisation. U. A. saw me. The pencil stopped after that line. U. A. saw me. Nezu had said it. The words should have helped. They did not. Ren stared at them until they blurred. Then, beneath them, slowly, he wrote: It looked away. The line was unfair. He knew it. U. A. had not looked away entirely. General Studies was not exile. The Sports Festival existed.
A road remained. But the sentence was not analysis. It was wound. Some wounds needed to be recorded before they became rules. He closed APPLICATIONS and opened RULES. New page. He wrote: A partial opening is not the same as acceptance. Then: Rejection with reasons is still rejection. Then: If the measurement is correct, improve. If the measurement is incomplete, expose the missing variable. If the measurement is biased, force comparison. He paused. Force comparison. Sports Festival. The thought appeared cleanly.
Public. Scored. Visible. Hero Course students and General Studies students under the same sky. Not gate. Arena. The idea was too early. He wrote it anyway. Sports Festival = next formal measurement. Then, smaller: Do not let anger design the plan. He underlined that twice. A knock came at the open door. Daichi stood there. He held a plate with cut fruit and a recovery drink. Ren looked at it.
"I am not hungry""Yes" Daichi entered anyway. He placed the plate on the desk, carefully avoiding the notebooks. Then he sat on the floor instead of the bed, back against the wall. For a while, they said nothing. Ren appreciated that. Then Daichi spoke.
"When I broke my wrist, I told myself the world had made a mistake by not giving me a stronger Quirk" Ren looked at him. His father looked at the opposite wall.
"I thought if I climbed higher, held longer, risked more, someone would see that I should have been given something better" Ren said nothing. Daichi's voice remained steady.
"It took me too long to understand that no one was coming to correct the distribution" The words hurt. Ren looked down. Daichi continued "But people could still see what I did with what I had" Ren's jaw tightened.
"And if they see it and decide it is not enough?"
"Then you decide whether they are right, wrong, or early" Ren looked at him. Daichi smiled faintly.
"Sometimes a verdict is just bad timing wearing authority" Ren almost smiled. Almost. His father nodded toward APPLICATIONS.
"You wrote the cruel version already?" Ren hesitated. Then turned the notebook so Daichi could see. U. A. saw me. It looked away. Daichi read it. His expression did not change quickly. That was how Ren knew he was taking it seriously. Finally, he said "That is how it feels""Yes""Is it the whole truth?"
"No""Good" Ren looked at him. Daichi's eyes were tired. Proud. Angry. Sad. All of it.
"Do not erase it" he said "Just don't build the next three years only on that line" Ren swallowed.
"I know""No" Daichi said "But you will" Ren looked away. His father stood slowly.
"Eat the fruit""Is that an emotional request or nutritional instruction?"
"Yes" Daichi left. Ren ate the fruit. Not because he was hungry. Because recovery was part of progress and because love sometimes arrived sliced into pieces on a plate. The U. A. portal updated that afternoon. Ren accepted General Studies. His finger hovered over the confirmation button longer than it had over the original application. Hero Course had been a declaration. General Studies was a compromise. No. Not compromise. Entry. Wrong door. Real road. He clicked accept.
The portal displayed: Admission offer accepted. Welcome to U. A. High School. Ren leaned back. Welcome. He did not feel welcomed. That was not required. Later, messages arrived. Masaru first. Did you get result? Ren looked at it for a full minute before responding. U. A. General Studies. The reply came almost immediately. That's still U. A. right? Yes. Then what's the problem? Ren stared at the message. Masaru sent another before he answered. That was a stupid question. I know the problem. But also congrats.
Ren typed: Thank you. Then deleted it. Then typed again: Thank you. Izuku's message arrived in the evening. Ren had not expected it and had expected nothing else. It was longer than necessary. Of course. Ren, I got my U. A. result today. I was accepted into the Hero Course. I still don't fully understand how to say that. I think I'm happy but also scared and my mom cried a lot. I wanted to tell you because I don't think I would have moved the same way if you had not told me to think while moving.
I still broke my arm and leg so I clearly need to think better. I'm sorry. Wait, not sorry. Thank you. Did your result arrive? Ren read the message once. Then again. Hero Course. There it was. No surprise. Still pain. He looked at his own accepted offer. General Studies. He imagined Izuku's face when the projection arrived. All Might, maybe. It would be All Might for him. Of course it would. The Symbol of Peace telling a boy who had been Quirkless that he could enter the door. Miracle recognized by miracle.
Ren placed the phone down. Walked to the window. Returned. Picked it up. Typed: Congratulations. Then stopped. Too small. He added: You earned the rescue points. Then stopped again. That was true. It was not all. He added: Hero Course rejected me. General Studies accepted. I am taking it. He looked at the message. No accusation. Good. No self-pity. Debatable. No lie. Good. He sent it. Izuku's reply came after three minutes. That was long for him. Ren pictured panic. Guilt. Drafting and deleting apologies.
Maybe crying. Maybe both. The message finally appeared. I don't know what to say. Ren typed: Good. Do not improvise comfort. Izuku replied faster. I'm sorry. Then immediately: I know. I did it again. I'm not apologizing because you told me not to. I'm sorry because it feels unfair. Ren stared at that. Feels unfair. Izuku had a gift for simple words that bypassed armor because they did not try to be clever. Ren replied: It is understandable. Izuku: That is not the opposite of unfair. Ren almost smiled. Almost.
He typed: No. It is not. Izuku: You're still going to U. A. Ren: Yes. Izuku: Then we both are. Ren looked at the message for a long time. Then we both are. Different courses. Different doors. Same building. Terrain. Roads. Not enough. Not over. He replied: Train your body before school starts. Izuku: I will. Ren: That is not a feeling. Make a schedule. Izuku: I knew you were going to say that. Ren: Then you should already have one. A pause. Izuku: Can you help? Ren closed his eyes. The easy answer was yes.
The accurate answer was complicated. His own body was injured. His own plan had failed. His own course was wrong. His own anger was too fresh to be trusted near someone who had received everything and paid for it in broken bones. But Izuku had asked. Not assumed. Asked. Ren typed: After I am medically cleared. We plan. No destructive training. No trying to force your Quirk. Recovery first. Izuku: Recovery first. Ren: If you write that down once and ignore it, I will know. Izuku: I already wrote it down twice.
Ren: Concerning but acceptable. Izuku sent a small laughing icon. Ren stared at it. Then put the phone down. Across the apartment, Hana and Daichi spoke quietly in the kitchen. He could not make out the words. He did not try. Night settled over the city. Somewhere, Bakugo Katsuki had almost certainly received his Hero Course acceptance and treated it less like a gift than confirmation of natural law. Somewhere, Izuku Midoriya sat with a healed but still aching body and a door open before him. Somewhere inside U. A.
, Nezu had already moved on to the next file, the next anomaly, the next piece of the game. Ren opened APPLICATIONS one more time. He turned to the page with the result. U. A. saw me. It looked away. He did not cross it out. Below it, he wrote a new line. Then make it look again. He closed the notebook. The next morning, he placed the General Studies acceptance letter in the front pocket of APPLICATIONS and moved the U. A. — ACTIVE tab into a new section. U. A. — ENTRY ACHIEVED. Below it, a fresh page waited.
Ren wrote the title carefully. TRANSFER PATH Then the first line. Sports Festival. He stopped there. Not because the plan was complete. Because for once, the wound and the road could exist on the same page without one pretending to erase the other. Ren sat back. His ribs hurt. His palm itched. His future had become smaller than he wanted and larger than the world had first allowed. Not enough. Still moving.
