Chương 34: One Seat

The phrase was not official. That made it worse. Official phrases came with paper, signatures, categories, exceptions, and language designed to survive complaints. Unofficial phrases moved faster. They slipped through cafeteria tables, classroom doors, hallway clusters, message threads, late-night fears, and the careful silences between students who wanted the same future badly enough to become dangerous around each other. One seat. No one from faculty had said it that way. Not exactly.
Kurose had said limited availability. The transfer packet had said course capacity subject to review. The internal policy summary had said performance does not guarantee placement. Nezu's public statement had said nothing at all about transfers, because the Sports Festival was supposed to be a celebration of student excellence, not a public inventory of children trying to claw their way through institutional walls. Students said one seat. One seat in the Hero Course.
One place opened by performance, politics, injury, administrative flexibility, or the simple fact that U. A. could not ignore certain students forever if they made themselves visible enough. One seat, maybe. Or none. Or more than one, though hope rarely chose plural when fear had a cleaner knife. Ren Akiyama heard the phrase for the first time at 8: 21 in the morning, twelve minutes after entering U. A.
, six minutes after reporting stable symptoms to Kurose by message, and three seconds before Kenta almost punched Sano in the shoulder before remembering that Sano's knee brace made casual violence morally complicated.
"One seat" Sano said, leaning against the wall outside Class 1-C like he had brought bad weather with him Kenta turned at once.
"Who said that?" Sano gestured vaguely down the hall.
"Everyone""That is not a source""It is when everyone is saying it" Arai stood nearby with one hand near the base of her horns, listening to the hallway with the distant look she got when too many conversations overlapped. Nana and Reina had arrived together and were pretending not to listen while clearly listening. Fujimura was drawing small boxes in the corner of his notebook, each one shaded differently. Yabara had written ONE SEAT on a scrap of paper and drawn teeth around it.
Shinso stood beside Ren with his hands in his pockets. He looked bored. Therefore not bored. Ren kept his bag on his right shoulder, lightened according to medical instruction. His ribs had improved to a three at rest, four with stairs, five if he moved too quickly or forgot that healing tissue disliked ambition. His forearm bandage was smaller now. The scar on his left arm had been quiet for two full days. Quiet did not mean harmless. Recovery Girl had said that. Several times. Ren looked at Sano.
"Faculty did not say one seat" Sano shrugged.
"Faculty doesn't say half the stuff that ends up being true" Kenta frowned.
"That still doesn't make it true""No. It just makes it sticky" Yabara lifted the scrap paper.
"It has teeth" Kurose appeared behind him.
"Put that away before it becomes a metaphor with disciplinary consequences" Yabara lowered it immediately.
"Good morning, sensei""Excellent survival reflex" She looked over the cluster of students. Then at Ren. Then at Shinso. Then at Sano, who suddenly found the floor very interesting.
"Classroom. Now" They entered. The board already had writing on it. Ren stopped just inside the doorway. One phrase. Scarier because Kurose had chosen to use it. One seat. Below it: Who benefits if you believe this before the evaluation begins? The class went very quiet. Shinso sat behind Ren.
"Subtle" he muttered Ren did not answer. He was still looking at the question. Who benefits? Not who said it. Not is it true. Who benefits if you believe it? Kurose waited until everyone sat. She did not begin immediately. Silence did some kinds of teaching better than words. Finally, she turned from the board.
"Today we're talking about scarcity" Kenta raised a hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Yes""Is there actually one seat?"
"No confirmed number has been given to students" Kenta's expression tightened.
"That is not a no""No" The room tightened with him. Kurose did not soften.
"And that is also not a yes" Sano leaned back.
"Annoying""Correct. Uncertainty usually is. That is why people use it" Ren's pencil remained on the desk. He had permission to take notes for class. He did not yet. Kurose tapped the board beside the question.
"If you believe there is only one seat, how does your behavior change?" Miyazaki raised her hand.
"You train harder""Possibly" Sano said "You stop sharing strategy""Possibly" Kenta said "You start looking at classmates like obstacles""Yes" Arai said quietly "You stop asking for help" Kurose looked at her.
"Yes" Nana said "You feel guilty for wanting it""Yes" Shinso said "You assume anyone being nice is either stupid or getting ready to beat you" Ren glanced back. Shinso's expression did not change. Kurose nodded.
"Yes" The room held that one for a moment. Ren said "You may accept unsafe risk because a scarce opportunity feels nonrepeatable" Kurose looked at him.
"Yes" The pencil remained untouched. Kurose's eyes flicked to it. Maybe approval. Maybe surveillance. Both. She turned back to the board.
"Scarcity can be real. Hero Course capacity is not infinite. Faculty time is not infinite. Safety infrastructure is not infinite. Public attention is not infinite. Scarcity can also be framed in ways that make students easier to rank, pressure, isolate, or spend" She underlined isolate.
"Your responsibility is not to pretend competition does not exist. Your responsibility is to understand what competition is allowed to change and what it is not allowed to change" Sano muttered "That sounds hard""It is""Do other departments get speeches like this?"
"No" Sano looked vindicated. Kurose continued.
"Other departments get different speeches because they have different risks. Hero Course is currently being warned against mistaking public reassurance for personal invincibility. Support Course is being warned against overbuilding under panic. Business Course is being warned against treating trauma as an engagement opportunity. General Studies is being warned against letting invisibility make you devour each other for the first visible door" The room went silent. There it was. Ugly. Useful.
Kurose never did less than necessary when more accuracy could hurt. She looked at Ren and Shinso only briefly, but it was enough.
"The Sports Festival can create opportunity. It can also create a story where your classmates become background obstacles in your personal rise. Resist that story" Kenta looked down. Sano tapped his fingers against the desk once, then stopped. Arai closed her eyes. Shinso leaned back. Ren wrote one sentence. Scarcity makes isolation feel rational. Kurose saw. Did not object.
"Group exercise" she said The room groaned.
"Your suffering has been observed and dismissed" She assigned pairs and trios. Naturally, Ren and Shinso were paired. Again. Kurose either believed their rivalry required supervision or enjoyed controlled instability. Possibly both. She gave each pair a sheet with three questions. What do I want from the Sports Festival? What am I afraid my competitor will take from me? What am I not allowed to take from them? Shinso read the sheet.
"No" Kurose said from across the room "Yes" He stared at her. She stared back. He lost. Ren looked at the questions. They were simple enough to be invasive. Shinso tapped the first one.
"You first" Ren said "You suggested it. Therefore you first""Coward""Procedural consistency" Shinso rolled his eyes.
"What do I want? Transfer consideration. Proof that my Quirk belongs in hero work. A chance to beat everyone who decided I was a villain waiting for paperwork" Ren wrote nothing. Shinso noticed.
"You're not writing?"
"This is not mine to record without consent" Shinso's expression shifted around something difficult.
"Oh" Ren waited. Shinso looked away first.
"Fine. Write the category. Not the exact wording" Ren wrote: Shinso wants transfer consideration, heroic legitimacy, reversal of stigma. Shinso read it upside down.
"Heroic legitimacy sounds disgusting""Accurate""Unfortunately" Ren looked at the first question.
"I want Hero Course consideration. I want public evidence that the entrance exam failed to measure relevant capability. I want official recognition of my Quirk or lack thereof as something more precise than insufficient. I want to be seen without being eaten alive by being seen" Shinso went quiet. Then he said "That last part is new""Yes""You rehearsed it?"
"No""That makes it worse" Ren wrote his own answer. The words looked exposed. Shinso tapped the second question.
"What am I afraid my competitor will take from me?" Ren said "Which competitor?" Shinso stared.
"Seriously?" Ren looked back at him. This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
"Yes" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"You""Good""Don't good me" Ren waited. Shinso exhaled through his nose.
"I'm afraid you'll make it look like General Studies already got its miracle story. Quirkless, maybe-not-Quirkless, saved people at USJ, mysterious adult attention, smart enough to irritate everyone, injured enough for sympathy, controlled enough for teachers to call it potential. If you get seen first, people might decide they already found the exception" The answer was too clean to be spontaneous. He had thought it before. Possibly often. Ren absorbed the shape of it. Then he nodded.
"That is a rational fear" Shinso looked irritated.
"I didn't ask for a grade""It was not a grade""It sounded like one""It was recognition" That stopped him. Not fully. Enough. Ren answered the same question.
"I am afraid you will prove the clearer case" Shinso frowned.
"What?"
"Your Quirk is visible in function, stigmatized but undeniable. USJ created a record. The Sports Festival rewards human interaction. If you perform well, the argument becomes straightforward. Your Quirk belongs in hero work. Mine remains ambiguous, costly, and easier to classify as a liability if I fail to manifest something publicly useful" Shinso stared. For once, no immediate insult arrived. Ren continued.
"I am afraid you can become visible without destroying yourself as much as I might be tempted to" Shinso's face changed.
"That's not" He stopped. Because it was. Maybe not fully. Enough. Kurose's question sat between them. What am I not allowed to take from them? Ren looked at it. Shinso looked too. Neither spoke for several seconds. Finally, Shinso said "I'm not allowed to take your support system and turn it into proof that you have it easy" Ren looked up. Shinso's jaw was tight.
"You do have support. In some ways. I'm not blind. Your parents show up. Teachers listen when you file reports. Your mother feeds people into surrender. Your father labels umbrellas like society depends on it. But that doesn't erase what you did to get here. It doesn't erase that you were rejected. It doesn't erase that your body is basically a disaster report with legs" Ren stared. Shinso looked away.
"That came out worse than I meant it to""No""Don't""It came out accurate" Shinso looked at him from the corner of his eye. Ren answered his own question.
"I am not allowed to take your stigma and turn it into proof that my path is cleaner because my danger points inward" Shinso went still. Ren continued.
"I am not allowed to treat your Quirk as a social obstacle you must overcome while treating my self-destruction risk as noble complexity. I am not allowed to want you recognized only when it does not threaten my own recognition" The room around them seemed far away. Kurose moved between desks. Other students spoke in low voices. The Sports Festival posters outside the door waited like teeth. Shinso said "That was too honest""Yes""Disgusting""Yes" He leaned back.
"If there is one seat""I know""I'm still taking it" Ren nodded.
"I know""You too?"
"Yes""Then what are we doing?" Ren looked at the worksheet.
"Making sure that if one of us loses, the other did not become the reason we became worse" Shinso was silent long enough that Ren looked up. His expression was unreadable. Then he said "That is the most irritating definition of friendship I have ever heard" Ren looked down.
"Friendship was not stated""It was heavily implied""Was it?"
"Do not make me say it twice" Ren almost smiled. Carefully. Kurose appeared beside their desks.
"Status?" Shinso said "Emotionally harassed by pedagogy" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Useful" She looked at Shinso.
"Disgusting" Kurose nodded.
"Productive, then" She moved on. Shinso muttered "She's evil" Ren said "Yes" The class ended with Kurose collecting the worksheets without reading them immediately. That was mercy again. Or tactical delay. Ren had learned not to assume a difference. After dismissal, the day split in different directions. Shinso had approved verbal strategy review with Kurose. Ren had medical check, then home recovery, then thirty minutes of rules analysis if symptoms stayed stable. Izuku had Hero Course training.
All Might had revised plans. The Sports Festival pulled all of them toward itself, but not at the same speed and not through the same door. By the end of the day, U. A. had decorated three more corridors. Ren passed a new banner on the way to the medical wing. GO BEYOND PLUS ULTRA The words had always been inspirational. Now they looked like a dare with legal immunity. He reported that thought to no one. Probably a mistake. Maybe not. The medical check was uneventful.
Uneventful was becoming one of his least favorite positive outcomes. Recovery Girl reviewed his symptoms, inspected the scar, confirmed no fever, threatened him twice, and approved continued conditional preparation. She also read Kurose's note about the scarcity lesson and made a satisfied noise.
"Good. Let the idea of one seat make you cautious instead of stupid" Ren said "Those are not the only two options""They are the only two I care about today" He accepted that because arguing would produce more paperwork. On the way out, he passed Izuku in the hall outside the training wing. Izuku looked flushed, tired, and intact. That last part mattered. Ren stopped.
"Breaks?" Izuku lifted both hands.
"None""Pain?"
"Low. Mostly muscle fatigue""Repeatability?"
"Better. All Might changed the drills. We're doing small activation during normal movement. I carried a cup" Ren blinked.
"A cup?" Izuku looked embarrassed but proud.
"I didn't crush it" Ren nodded slowly.
"That is success" Izuku smiled. It was small. Real.
"Yeah. It felt weirdly good""Good" Izuku laughed under his breath.
"You sound like him now" Ren frowned.
"All Might?"
"Today, yes""That is concerning""No, I mean he sounded like you too" Ren did not know what to do with that. Izuku continued.
"He said small can be heroic if it lets you keep going" Ren looked away.
"Acceptable phrasing" Izuku's smile widened. Then it faded slightly.
"You okay?"
"Medically stable""Ren" He sighed.
"Competition pressure increasing. Scarcity framing. Manageable" Izuku nodded.
"I heard people saying one seat""Everyone heard""That must feel" He stopped. Ren looked at him. Izuku corrected himself.
"I don't know how it feels. But I'm sorry. No, not sorry first. I mean I'm glad you and Shinso are both trying" Ren studied him.
"You are improving conversation structure" Izuku looked pleased.
"Thanks""Do not overvalue praise" He winced.
"Right" The warning landed. Good. Izuku shifted his bag.
"I should go. All Might wants me to rest before doing anything else""Then do that""I will""Actually?" Izuku nodded.
"Actually" Progress. They parted. Ren did not know that the conversation would follow Izuku home like a shadow. He did not know that All Might would carry another version of it into an empty office. He only knew that the building felt full of possible futures, and every one of them seemed to ask whether he would become better or only more visible. Toshinori Yagi sat alone in a small faculty office after sunset with the lights off and the Sports Festival security schedule glowing on the monitor in front of him.
He had meant to review patrol rotations. He had meant to compare arrival windows, guest access, broadcast points, evacuation routes, and the new emergency response layers Nezu had inserted with cheerful ruthlessness. Instead, he stared at a training plan he had already rewritten three times. Young Midoriya — Control Phase. Minimum activation. Mundane context. Pain as failed parameter. Praise restraint. Refusal drills. No heroic improvisation.
The last line had been underlined by Recovery Girl so hard the paper almost tore. Toshinori smiled faintly despite himself. Then he coughed into a cloth and the smile vanished. No blood. Good. A dangerous metric. Young Akiyama had said that. Too many of the boy's sentences had begun staying. That was not new. Students often surprised him. Young Midoriya surprised him daily. Young Bakugo surprised him in ways that made discipline reports seem inevitable. Young Uraraka had more resolve than her warmth suggested.
Young Iida held duty like a blade he had not yet realized could cut inward. Young Todoroki carried silence like winter. But Akiyama was different. Not stronger. Not better. Different in the way a locked room was different from a hallway. Toshinori leaned back in the chair. His body ached. The old wound always ached when he used too much time. The ache had become background long ago, like weather inside his ribs.
He had built a nation's reassurance on top of a countdown and called it peace because the alternative had been letting people see the smoke. He thought of Akiyama looking at Young Midoriya's training and seeing load-bearing. Not glory. Not destiny. Load-bearing. He thought of those eyes in the meeting room, too controlled, too young, too accustomed to converting fear into structure.
And for the first time since choosing Izuku Midoriya on a beach full of trash and impossible hope, Toshinori allowed the question to form without immediately crushing it. What if he had met Ren Akiyama first? Not as he was now, after USJ, after fragments, after protocols, after the boy had already grown around rejection like a tree around wire. Before. Quirkless diagnosis. No, perhaps not Quirkless. Uncertain. Scarred. Adaptive. Dangerous in ways no clinic had named. A child with notebooks.
A child who studied exits before entering rooms. A child who would have looked at the impossible gift of One For All and asked for mechanics before awe. Would he have accepted? Toshinori did not know. That uncertainty itself was strange. Young Midoriya had accepted with tears, terror, reverence, and a hunger to become worthy of the hand extended toward him. Akiyama might have asked what the power cost. He might have asked whether it could be refused.
He might have asked whether accepting would make him responsible for a war he did not understand. He might have accepted anyway. Toshinori closed his eyes. If One For All had gone to Akiyama, the first months would have been different. No explosive beach training based on impossible enthusiasm and borrowed dreams. Akiyama would have measured sandbag weight, recovery windows, tendon stress, calorie intake, sleep debt, grip failure, ankle stability, respiratory adaptation. He would have built charts.
He would have hidden charts. He would have made Recovery Girl furious before ever meeting her. He would have asked better questions than Toshinori had answers for. That thought hurt. Would he have broken less? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Akiyama had discipline. Akiyama also had a terrible habit of treating his body as evidence. Give that boy One For All, and what would he become? A safer vessel? Or a more precise martyr? Toshinori imagined Ren standing at the U. A. entrance exam with that power inside him.
He would not have leapt blindly at the Zero Pointer. No. He would have seen the collapse, calculated the route, chosen the angle, reduced the impact, perhaps saved the trapped student with less damage than Midoriya had suffered. Maybe he would have earned villain points too. Maybe he would have entered Hero Course from the start. Maybe he would have sat in Class 1-A and watched Midoriya from the other side of the door. Quirkless Midoriya. Still notebook in hand. Still running toward danger with no power.
What would have happened to that boy? The thought entered Toshinori like cold. Izuku without One For All. Izuku at U. A. perhaps rejected. Izuku watching another Quirkless boy become the miracle. Izuku smiling anyway because he was kind enough to bleed quietly. No. Toshinori opened his eyes. The room remained dark. The monitor glowed. Sports Festival schedules waited. He had not chosen Midoriya because Midoriya was the safest vessel.
He had not chosen him because Midoriya had the best body, the best plan, the best preparation, or the best chance of surviving without correction. He had chosen him because a powerless boy had moved when even Toshinori, Symbol of Peace, had hesitated in the shape of his own limits. That did not make the choice perfect. It made it true. Young Akiyama might have carried One For All with more caution. He might have built better protocols. He might have understood load-bearing sooner.
He might have looked magnificent in a way that frightened teachers and reassured evaluators. But would he have believed the gift was allowed to be gentle? Toshinori doubted it. Akiyama would have turned One For All into a case. A duty. A proof. A weapon against every adult who had looked at him and found him insufficient. Midoriya had turned it into a promise. A dangerous promise. A bone-breaking promise. A promise that needed correction before it became a funeral. But a promise.
Toshinori looked down at the revised training plan. Perhaps the cruel truth was not that one boy deserved it more. Perhaps the cruel truth was that either boy would have been hurt by it in the shape of his deepest wound. Midoriya feared being useless, so the power became proof that he could finally act. Akiyama feared being unseen, so the power might have become proof that pain had finally purchased value. Toshinori gripped the paper. Then his hand loosened. No. The answer was not to regret the choice.
The answer was to become worthy of having made it. He wrote a new line under the training plan. Belief must not create debt. He looked at it. Then added: Small must become heroic before the crowd teaches otherwise. That was Akiyama's sentence through his hand. So be it. Teachers borrowed from students all the time. The good ones admitted it eventually. Toshinori saved the plan, printed a copy for Recovery Girl, and turned off the monitor.
In the dark reflection of the screen, he saw not All Might, not fully, but the thin man who remained after smoke and applause left. He whispered to the empty room "Young Midoriya, I chose you" The words did not erase the question. They anchored it. Then he added, quieter "Now I must teach you well enough that the choice does not break you" Outside the office, U. A. prepared a festival for a country afraid to admit it was afraid.
Inside, Toshinori picked up the revised plan and went to find Recovery Girl before he could improvise something heroic and stupid. Izuku Midoriya wrote the question at the top of a clean notebook page and immediately wanted to tear it out. What if All Might had chosen Akiyama? He stared at it until the letters stopped being letters and became something worse. The apartment was quiet.
His mother had gone to bed after asking three times whether his hand hurt, twice whether he had eaten enough, and once whether the Sports Festival was too soon. He had answered honestly enough to avoid lying and carefully enough to avoid making her more afraid. The second skill felt worse than the first. His room was dim except for the desk lamp. Hero notebooks lined the shelves. Old All Might figures stood in their familiar places. The poster on the wall still smiled with impossible certainty.
Izuku looked at the question again. What if All Might had chosen Akiyama? The thought had been trying to form for days. Maybe longer. It had begun at the entrance exam, when Ren had sat in Recovery Girl's infirmary with bandages and calm eyes and somehow made being rejected look like an argument that had only been delayed. It had sharpened after USJ, when Izuku learned that Class 1-C had moved through maintenance corridors, held shelters, and survived without All Might there to save them immediately.
It had grown teeth after Ren told him resentment existed between them and did not make it hatred. Then today, All Might had changed the training. Small activation. Carrying a cup. Turning without breaking. Pain as failed parameter. Praise restraint. Repeatability. It sounded like Ren. Izuku had heard the shape even before All Might admitted that Akiyama had offered useful perspective. Not secret. Not everything. Enough. And now the question sat on the page. If All Might had met Ren first, would he have chosen him?
Izuku's stomach twisted. Ren was Quirkless. Or had been believed Quirkless. Or was something else, something the world had failed to measure. Ren had trained for years. Ren had studied. Ren had built rules before Izuku had built muscle. Ren could look at a room and find exits, risks, leverage, social pressure, failure points. Ren understood bodies. Ren understood pain. Ren had known how to help at USJ without a flashy Quirk. Ren had warned someone. Ren had saved students.
Ren had spoken to All Might like a person instead of a statue. If Ren had received One For All, he might have used it better. The thought made Izuku's hand shake. He gripped the pencil harder. Too hard. Then stopped. Repeatability. No unnecessary tension. He loosened his fingers. Good. Small. Annoying. He looked back at the page. Ren with One For All would have made charts. He would have built output protocols.
He would have refused to punch with one hundred percent unless there was no alternative and then written six pages on why the alternative search failed. He would have asked how to survive the gift before trying to deserve it. He would have known that fingers were not ammunition. Izuku pressed his lips together. He wanted to say that was unfair to himself. It was. It was also probably true. But another image came. Ren in the infirmary.
Ren saying he resented that Izuku's miracle looked like self-destruction and everyone still called it potential. Ren in the courtyard saying he was trying not to let envy make decisions. Ren at lunch answering Bakugo with quiet precision. Ren walking slowly because his ribs hurt and because people had told him stopping was a skill. Ren would not have been safe with One For All. Not automatically. He would have been brilliant. He would have been careful.
He also might have treated every controlled use as proof that years of being unseen had been a mistake the world now owed him for. Izuku knew that because he knew what he himself did with the power. He turned it into proof that he had not been useless. Different wound. Same danger. He wrote: Akiyama would have planned better. Then: I can learn planning. He wrote: Akiyama would have noticed load. Then: I can learn load. He wrote: Akiyama might have broken less. His pencil stopped. That one hurt.
He did not know how to answer. Finally, he wrote: Then I must stop accepting breaking as part of the identity. The sentence looked like something Ren would say after making it less emotional. Izuku almost laughed. It came out closer to a breath. He looked up at the All Might poster. All Might had chosen him. Not because Izuku was the best prepared. He knew that. Not because his body was ready. It was not. Not because he knew how to carry the power. He did not. All Might had chosen him because he moved.
Because his legs had carried him toward Kacchan before he had permission, power, or plan. That memory still burned. Heroic. Stupid. Both. If All Might had chosen Ren, maybe Ren would be in 1-A. Maybe he would stand beside Todoroki and Bakugo and Iida and Uraraka with quiet eyes and a power built into better systems. Maybe Izuku would be in General Studies. Maybe he would be watching from outside the Hero Course door, smiling too hard, writing notes on the person who had received the miracle he had dreamed of.
The thought hurt so badly that he had to put the pencil down. Would he have hated Ren? No. He did not think so. He might have resented him. Ren had said resentment was not hatred. That helped. Terribly. Izuku wiped his eyes with his sleeve, then remembered Recovery Girl would somehow know if he rubbed too hard and stopped. He picked up the pencil again. What if All Might had chosen Akiyama? He wrote under it: Then Akiyama would have had to learn not to turn power into proof. I have to learn the same thing.
That was the answer. Not complete. But enough to continue. The page blurred. He kept writing. Akiyama is not the person One For All should have gone to instead of me. He is the person who shows me what I am still learning. Better. He looked at his hand. No fracture today. Small activation. Cup intact. Turn step stable. Pain low. Unimpressive. Repeatable. All Might had looked so proud when the cup did not crack. Not the old kind of proud that made Izuku want to do more. A quieter kind.
A kind that said staying whole could count. Maybe All Might was learning too. Maybe Ren had made him learn. That did not feel like being replaced. Not exactly. It felt like someone had corrected the shape of the bridge while Izuku was still walking across it. He looked at the question one final time. What if All Might had chosen Akiyama? Izuku wrote the last answer beneath it. He did not. So I have to become someone who can carry what he chose. Not alone. Not by breaking.
Not by pretending Ren would have been better and using that as another way to hate myself. He closed the notebook. Then opened it again. Added one more line. If Akiyama reaches Hero Course, I want to stand beside him, not as proof I deserved it first, but as someone still learning how to survive the same dream. He stared at that one for a long time. Then nodded once. Small. Private. No applause. Good. He turned off the desk lamp. Before sleeping, he sent one message. No breaks today. Cup survived.
I'm trying to make small count. Ren's reply came after a few minutes. Small counts if it can be repeated. Izuku smiled into the darkness. Then another message came. Sleep is part of repeatability. Izuku groaned softly. A third message appeared. Hana would say eat first, but current time indicates sleep first. Izuku laughed. Quietly. Then he put the phone away. For once, he did not fall asleep imagining a smash. He imagined a cup remaining unbroken in his hand. It was not much. That was why it mattered.
The next morning, Ren found Shinso at the usual east entrance instead of the classroom. Shinso was leaning against the wall under a Sports Festival notice, one foot propped behind him, hands in pockets, looking like he had arrived early by accident and would deny it under oath. Ren approached slowly. Ribs three. Breathing stable. Scar quiet. Green. Shinso looked him over.
"Medical receipt?"
"Stable""Good" Ren stopped beside him.
"You are early""So are you""My father adjusted route timing to account for security""Your father absolutely would""Why are you early?" Shinso looked toward the courtyard beyond the glass doors.
"Couldn't sleep" Ren did not answer too quickly.
"Festival?"
"Partly""Dinner?" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Do not make dinner sound ominous""I was asking""You were classifying""Yes" Shinso sighed.
"Dinner was fine. That's not the problem""Acceptable?"
"Your mother has weaponized acceptable. I'm avoiding it now" Ren almost smiled. Shinso looked at the notice above them.
"I kept thinking about one seat" Ren followed his gaze. The notice said nothing about transfers. It did not need to.
"Yes""If you get it" Ren looked at him. Shinso's face remained turned toward the poster.
"If you get it and I don't, I'm going to hate it""Yes""I might hate you for a while""Yes""Not forever, probably""Good" Shinso looked at him.
"I'm serious""I know""And if I get it""I will resent you""Not forever?" Ren considered.
"Probably not" Shinso snorted.
"Honest""Yes" Ren looked at the poster again.
"Either way, we continue" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Do we?"
"Yes""You sound very sure""I am choosing certainty where evidence is insufficient""That's called delusion""Sometimes. Also commitment" Shinso looked at him for a long moment. Then said "If I get there first, I'm not waiting for you""Good""If you get there first, don't turn it into guilt" Ren's breath caught. Slightly. Shinso saw. Of course. Ren said "That is a useful warning""It was an order""You lack authority""I have irritation""Insufficient" Shinso smiled faintly. Then it faded.
"Don't make Todoroki your proof" Ren went still. Shinso's eyes were sharp.
"You looked at him after the announcement. You wrote fragment. You've been doing the quiet dangerous thing whenever his name comes up" Ren said nothing. Shinso continued.
"I don't know what you saw. I'm not asking. But if he becomes your big public moment before you even reach him, you'll do something stupid" Ren looked toward the hallway where Hero Course students would eventually pass. Todoroki was not there. The cold still existed in memory.
"I know""No, you heard me. Demonstrate understanding" Ren stared. Shinso looked smug and uncomfortable.
"Kurose infection" Ren exhaled.
"If Todoroki appears as a future match or obstacle, the objective is not proof. The objective is advancement if safe, evaluation if advancement is impossible, and preservation of judgment under pressure" Shinso waited. Ren added "Red if I accept damage to force recognition""Good" Ren looked at him.
"You said it again""I contain multitudes""You overuse that""You over-document everything""Fair" Students began arriving in larger numbers. The hallway filled gradually with voices, footsteps, speculation, nervous laughter, and the low hum of a school becoming a festival venue while pretending education had not become performance. Kurose appeared at the far end. She saw them. Stopped. Looked at the poster. Looked at them. Then approached.
"Should I be concerned?" Shinso said "Always" Ren said "Not immediately" Kurose looked unconvinced.
"Status" Ren answered.
"Green. Ribs three, breathing stable, scar quiet, present oriented. Discussed one seat and Todoroki risk without physical escalation or secrecy breach" Shinso looked at him.
"You report like a machine" Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Status" He sighed.
"Green. Tired. Annoyed. Competitive. Not planning murder""Useful but insufficient. Add support" Shinso looked away.
"Food bag from yesterday still had breakfast. I ate it" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Ren and Shinso both reacted faintly. Kurose's mouth almost moved.
"Classroom. Both of you" They followed. Inside Class 1-C, the board was blank. For now. Ren sat. Shinso sat behind him. The Sports Festival waited. Hero Course waited. One seat waited. Maybe none. Maybe more. All Might somewhere carried a revised plan. Izuku somewhere learned to hold power like a cup instead of a detonation. Shinso behind him prepared to weaponize words without becoming the story others feared. Ren looked at his pencil. Picked it up. Waited for permission before writing. Kurose noticed. Of course.
She nodded once. Small. Private. No applause. Ren wrote at the top of the page: One seat is not enough information to become worse. Then under it: If the door is narrow, do not become smaller. Become precise. He looked at the words. They were not a plan. Not yet. They were a shape. For now, shape was enough.
