Todoroki Shoto had learned young that his father could make praise sound like weather. Cold facts. Hot pressure. No warmth. After the Sports Festival, he expected anger. That would have been simple. Endeavor angry because he had not used fire in the final properly. Endeavor angry because Bakugo had won. Endeavor angry because the first public use of his left side had been dragged out by Midoriya Izuku, of all people, and then partly withdrawn again when the final demanded continuation. He expected the words. Waste.
Half-measure. Insufficient. You showed them what you are, then stopped. He expected his father to stand in front of him like a wall made of flame and ambition and speak as if Shoto's body remained a project not yet completed. He did not expect Akiyama Ren's name to enter the room. That made it worse. The private waiting room reserved for family visits after the festival smelled faintly of polished wood, sweat, and expensive air conditioning.
It had large windows facing a closed courtyard, two couches no one had sat on comfortably, and a table with untouched tea. Shoto stood near the window because sitting would feel like staying. Endeavor filled the room without needing to raise his voice. His flames were lower than usual, controlled along his shoulders and jaw. The heat still changed the air.
"You used it" Shoto did not turn from the window.
"Yes""Not enough" There it was. Expected. Almost relieving. Shoto looked at his reflection in the glass. White hair. Red hair. One eye from his mother. One from his father. The left side seemed louder after the festival, even when cold.
"I used what I chose" Endeavor's silence became heat.
"You hesitated in the final""Yes""Bakugo won because you refused to fight at full output" Shoto turned then.
"Bakugo won because he stayed active until the result" Endeavor's eyes narrowed.
"That is not an answer""It is an accurate description" The flame at Endeavor's jaw sharpened. For a moment, Shoto thought the conversation would return to its ordinary track. His father would speak of potential, victory, inheritance, surpassing All Might, and the future that had been written for Shoto before he knew how to hold a spoon. Then Endeavor's gaze shifted to the folder on the table. A U. A. staff member had brought it in five minutes earlier. Agency follow-up summaries. Preliminary festival evaluations.
Professional correspondence notices. Shoto had ignored it because all documents after the festival had begun to feel like nets. Endeavor did not ignore nets. He picked up one page.
"Akiyama Ren" Shoto went still. The name did not belong in his father's mouth. Endeavor read the page once. Not slowly. He had always been efficient with information when information could be turned into pressure.
"General Studies" Shoto said nothing. Endeavor's eyes moved across the page.
"Previously ambiguous Quirk status. Public manifestation during your match. Scar Tissue" The private name should not have been on that page. Then Shoto saw the header. Not U. A.'s internal file. Public summary. Speculation. Press. Agency notes drawn from broadcast commentary and post-event statements. Not confirmation. Still enough. Endeavor said "He moved through your ice" Shoto's hands curled.
"He redirected a falling hazard""He moved through your ice" The repetition changed the sentence. It was no longer about the hazard. It was about failure. Shoto felt cold rise from his right side and forced it still.
"He was injured""Obviously" Endeavor placed the page back on the table.
"His response under pressure was abnormal" Shoto heard the word as if it had been a blade sliding free. Abnormal. Not brave. Not hurt. Not student. Response. Endeavor continued "He may have utility in extreme-environment training and high-stress field persistence" The words were familiar. Not because Shoto had heard them about Ren before. Because he had heard versions of them about himself. Heat tolerance. Cold output. Fire resistance. Ice control. Combat potential. Quirk efficiency.
A body described by what it could be made to withstand. Shoto looked at his father.
"You sent an inquiry" Endeavor's expression did not change.
"My agency expressed professional interest""You sent an inquiry""Yes" The answer landed flat. Shoto's throat tightened.
"He is not in the Hero Course""He is under evaluation""He is injured""Recovery is part of assessment" Something cold and ugly moved through Shoto.
"His recovery is not yours to assess" Endeavor's flame lifted.
"Do not speak as if you understand professional development after throwing away a final" Shoto stepped away from the window.
"I understand what you call development" The room heated. Endeavor's gaze hardened.
"You used fire because Midoriya forced you to remember whose power it is" Shoto's jaw clenched.
"Akiyama said something different" Endeavor's expression shifted by one fraction. There. Interest. This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it Not concern. Interest.
"What did he say?" Shoto almost did not answer. Then realized withholding the sentence would not protect it. His father would still seek shape in silence. Better to choose the form.
"He said refusing half my Quirk did not make the match safer. It made one answer too large" Endeavor stared. For one second, the room had no sound except flame. Then Endeavor said "That is not wrong" The agreement felt worse than dismissal. Shoto's stomach turned. Endeavor continued "A tool unused creates weakness. He saw that""He was not talking about tools""All Quirks become tools in the field" Shoto's left hand flexed. Heat sparked along his knuckles before he stopped it. Endeavor noticed. Of course he did.
"Control it" Shoto looked at his hand. Then at his father.
"No" The word was quiet. Endeavor's flames flared.
"What?"
"I will not control it because you ordered it" The air thickened. Shoto felt his own pulse in his left wrist. Fire waiting. Not his father's. His. That distinction still felt like a wound being asked to become a door. He continued.
"I will control it because uncontrolled fire burns other people" Endeavor's eyes narrowed.
"Is that Midoriya's lesson or Akiyama's?"
"Mine" For the first time, the word felt unfinished but not false. Endeavor stepped closer.
"You think a few words from children in a tournament can teach you what years of training did not?" Shoto did not step back.
"No. I think years of training taught me what your words are for" Endeavor stopped. Shoto heard his mother's voice in memory. Not words. A kettle. Steam. A scream. Ice over skin. He breathed. He did not let the memory decide the room.
"Akiyama is not a field persistence model" Shoto said "He is a student" Endeavor's flame lowered. The quiet was more dangerous.
"Do not confuse pity with judgment""I am not""You are reacting because he was injured during your match""Yes""Guilt is not analysis""No" Shoto swallowed.
"But neither is interest" That landed. Endeavor's face changed in the smallest possible way. Not anger. Calculation.
"You are warning me away from him""Yes""Because you believe I would harm him" Shoto did not answer quickly. That mattered.
"Yes" Endeavor's jaw tightened.
"You know nothing about what he needs""I know what he does not need""And what is that?" Shoto's voice went cold.
"To become another child measured by what he survives" The flame at Endeavor's shoulders surged once. Then settled. The door opened before either of them could speak again. A U. A. faculty member stood outside. Not Kurose. Not Aizawa. A formal liaison with the expression of someone who understood he had entered a room where temperature had become political.
"Todoroki. Endeavor. The post-festival family window is ending. Additional professional correspondence must go through U. A. channels" Endeavor did not look away from Shoto.
"Of course" The liaison looked relieved and terrified that the answer had been civil. Endeavor picked up the folder. Then stopped. He looked at Shoto one more time.
"You used fire" Shoto said nothing.
"You will use it again" Not a question. Shoto answered anyway.
"Yes" Endeavor's gaze sharpened with triumph. Shoto continued "Not for you" The triumph did not disappear. It changed. Perhaps into a different kind of ambition. Perhaps into something more irritated because it could not be owned as cleanly. Endeavor turned toward the door. Before leaving, he said "Akiyama's evaluation will continue regardless of your discomfort" Shoto looked at him.
"Then so will mine" Endeavor paused. Then left. The room cooled slowly after him. Shoto stood alone with untouched tea, a reflection split in the glass, and the knowledge that his father had agreed with one of Ren's sentences for the wrong reason. That made the sentence more dangerous. Not less true. He left the waiting room ten minutes later and did not go to the dorms, because there were no dorms yet and U. A. students still returned to homes that did not always deserve the word.
He walked instead toward the medical wing with a formal excuse folded in his pocket. Follow-up evaluation. Burn and frost exposure review. Post-match check. All true. Not complete. Recovery Girl looked up when he entered the outer medical office.
"No" Shoto stopped.
"I have a scheduled check""You have a scheduled check in room one. Akiyama is not in room one" He had not asked. Apparently his face had. Everyone at U. A. had become intolerable. Recovery Girl crossed her arms.
"He is not available for guilt management, family rebellion practice, agency politics, or whatever emotionally constipated category you are currently inventing" Shoto stood still.
"I wanted to inform him""Of what?"
"My father sent the inquiry" Recovery Girl's face changed. Not surprise. Anger finding a clearer target.
"Kurose already informed him that the inquiry exists""I know""Then?" Shoto looked at the floor. The clean answer was not available. He used the true one.
"I wanted him to know I objected" Recovery Girl watched him for a long moment.
"You want credit?"
"No""You want relief?" He closed his eyes.
"Yes""Good. At least you can identify it" He opened them. Recovery Girl pointed toward the waiting bench.
"Sit. You are getting your check. Then I will decide whether your message becomes a note, a report, or nothing" Shoto sat. The bench was hard. Good. Soft things made it harder not to think. Recovery Girl checked his vitals with efficient annoyance, inspected the minor burn stress on his left forearm, the skin temperature shifts across both sides, the signs of overuse in the right shoulder from ice output and the left from fire he had not trained as honestly as he had trained his refusal. She clicked her tongue.
"You are a mess in a different font" Shoto looked at her.
"Than Akiyama?"
"Than everyone. But yes" He did not know what to do with that. Recovery Girl wrote something down.
"You used fire after suppressing it for years""Yes""You used it under emotional pressure""Yes""You used it again later in smaller amounts""Yes""Pain?"
"Manageable""That is not a number""Two. Heat fatigue three" She wrote.
"Psychological discomfort?" Shoto looked at her. She stared back.
"Do not make me ask twice""High""Number""Seven""Good" The word sounded harsher from her than from anyone else. She continued.
"You are not cleared to rapidly escalate fire training. You are not cleared to overcorrect your entire childhood in one week. You are not cleared to let Endeavor decide that a public breakthrough means your body belongs to a new schedule" Shoto's hands rested on his knees. He looked at them.
"No one says that to him""I am saying it to you. You may repeat it in a room with him if you enjoy property damage" A strange sound left Shoto. Almost laughter. Recovery Girl raised an eyebrow.
"Good. Still human" Shoto looked away. After the check, she took out a small notepad.
"One sentence""What?"
"Your message to Akiyama. One sentence. I decide whether to forward it through Kurose" Shoto considered. He had too many sentences. My father sent the inquiry. I told him no. I do not know if that matters. He agreed with you for the wrong reason. I am sorry. Not clean. Not enough. Too much. Finally, he said "My father's interest is not my consent" Recovery Girl paused. Then wrote it down.
"That is not bad" Shoto said nothing. She tore off the page.
"I will give this to Kurose. She will decide when or whether he receives it""Thank you""Do not thank me. Make better choices" He nodded.
"I am trying""Try smaller" The phrase sounded like something Ren would have said. Or Midoriya. Or All Might, if he was learning. Shoto left the medical wing with his check form and no certainty that the message would reach Ren. That was probably fair. The message reached Ren the next morning. Kurose placed it on his desk before first period, face unreadable.
"Forwarded from Todoroki through Recovery Girl. You do not have to respond" Ren looked at the paper. My father's interest is not my consent. He read it once. Then again. The room around him remained ordinary. Sano was arguing quietly with Kenta about whether a chair could be a villain if used by Eraser Head. Arai was adjusting dampener settings. Shinso was slouched beside Ren with a notebook open and a strip of folded paper sticking from one page. Ren handed him the note without speaking. Shinso read it.
His expression changed.
"Good sentence""Yes""Annoying source""Yes""Do you believe him?" Ren took the note back.
"I believe the sentence" Shinso nodded.
"That is safer" Ren looked at the page. Endeavor's interest. Todoroki's consent. His own body somewhere in between as object of inquiry. He opened his notebook. Wrote: Interest is not consent. Then: Another person's objection is not protection enough. Then, after a pause: But it is not nothing. Kurose began class. The note stayed on Ren's desk for the first period. Not hidden. Not displayed. A small document from a boy carrying a building, saying he had at least recognized when another construction crew arrived.
At lunch, Todoroki did not come to Ren's table. Good. Maybe. Ren saw him across the cafeteria. Todoroki looked once. Ren lifted the note slightly. Not high. Not for others. Todoroki saw. Ren nodded. Todoroki's face remained almost still. Almost. Then he nodded back. No absolution. No alliance. No clean bridge. A marked boundary. For now, that was enough. That afternoon, the Endeavor Agency received U. A.' s formal response. Kurose drafted the first version.
Nezu edited it into something polite enough to be legally resilient. Recovery Girl added a medical hold so aggressive that even politeness limped around it.
The final reply thanked the agency for its professional inquiry, stated that Akiyama Ren was not cleared for any extreme-environment training, high-stress survival observation, combat durability assessment, or field persistence evaluation, and that all future interest would be reviewed only through the Cross-Course Hero Candidate Evaluation Track with parent consent, medical clearance, student consent, and U. A. oversight. It did not say absolutely not. It said you will use the door, and the door has locks.
Kurose sent it. Then printed a copy for the file. Then another for Hana and Daichi. Then one for Ren, because he had asked to see the exact words adults used when they protected him. At home that evening, Ren sat at the kitchen table and read the reply while Hana cooked and Daichi repaired the handle of an old umbrella that apparently had a name and history. Hana watched Ren read the line about extreme-environment training.
"Status?" Ren did not look up.
"Yellow. Anger. Relief. Wanting to be the kind of person who could accept that training safely" Daichi's hand paused on the umbrella handle. Hana turned the heat down on the stove.
"That is a good report" Ren closed his eyes.
"The word""Yes" Hana said "The word" Ren looked at the paper again. Student consent required. Parent consent required. Medical clearance required. U. A. oversight required. Doors. Locks. Not walls. He should be grateful. He was. He should be angry. He was. He should be frightened that a request from a top agency could make part of him imagine walking willingly into extreme pressure just to prove he could survive it. He was. All of it sat at the table with him. Hana placed dinner down.
"Eat before becoming philosophical" Ren looked at her.
"That is becoming a family protocol""It always was. We are only writing it more clearly now" Daichi held up the umbrella.
"Speaking of writing clearly, this umbrella's name remains under review" Ren stared at him.
"I thought we were not naming umbrellas""This one already has history" Hana said "Its name is not under review. Its name is Bentaro" Ren closed his eyes.
"No" Daichi looked betrayed.
"Your mother named it during the storm of 2213""That was two years ago""A significant storm" Ren looked at the Endeavor reply. Then at his parents arguing over whether an umbrella deserved legal recognition. Some part of him settled. Not because the danger had passed. It had not. Endeavor's interest remained. Agency folders remained. The world still wanted useful things. But here, for the length of dinner, a top hero's inquiry had to wait behind rice, soup, and an umbrella with a disputed name.
That mattered more than it should. Later, in a different part of the city, Endeavor read U. A.' s response in his agency office. The words were polite. Dense. Obstructive. He read them twice. Student consent. Parent consent. Medical clearance. U. A. oversight. His flame brightened along his shoulders. An assistant stood near the door, tablet in hand.
"Should we file a renewed formal request after medical stabilization?" Endeavor placed the paper on his desk.
"No" The assistant blinked.
"No, sir?"
"Not yet" He looked out the window toward a city full of lights and small moving lives.
"A forced door tells you little except who guards it" The assistant wisely did not answer. Endeavor's eyes returned to the line high-stress survival observation not authorized. He thought of Shoto standing in the waiting room, saying he is not a field persistence model. He thought of a General Studies student moving through ice that should have ended him. He thought of the phrase Akiyama had given Shoto. One answer too large. Endeavor's jaw tightened. He did not like being given useful words by children.
He liked less that they were useful.
"Monitor through official channels only" he said"Yes sir""And gather public footage" The assistant hesitated.
"Of Akiyama?"
"Of all students who forced Shoto to change" That list was shorter than it should have been. Midoriya. Akiyama. Perhaps Bakugo, in his own infuriating way. Endeavor turned back to the window.
"Do not contact him directly""Yes sir" The assistant left. Endeavor remained alone with the blocked inquiry, the memory of his son's left side finally burning in public, and an irritation he did not yet recognize as the edge of a world where children were beginning to name what adults had done to them before those adults were finished calling it training. At U. A., Kurose's copy of the response entered Ren's restricted file.
In Garaki's laboratory, a public clip of the Todoroki-Akiyama match was replayed at half speed again, scraped not from U. A. records but from a dozen scattered uploads and spectator angles. A gloved hand paused the frame where Ren's palm anchored to ice. No door had been used. No lock had been touched. The world had many ways of looking. Ren did not know that yet.
That night, he placed Todoroki's note beside All Might's copy, not because they belonged together, but because both were sentences written by people learning to use safer words after causing or inheriting unsafe ones. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. My father's interest is not my consent. Ren looked at both. Then opened his notebook and wrote: Safer words are not safety. Then: But unsafe words are worse. He closed the notebook. A hallway had doors now. Some were locked from the inside.
Some were being tested from the outside.
