Chương 48: No One Seat

Ren returned to Class 1-C with a medical restriction sheet, a wrapped left forearm, two taped ribs, one officially provisional Quirk name, and a handwritten food schedule Hana had attached to his folder with the quiet violence of a mother who had discovered bureaucracy could be used defensively. The class noticed all of it. They pretended not to notice for exactly four seconds. Then Sano stood on his chair. Kurose looked up from the front desk.
"Sano" He sat down before completing whatever heroic declaration had been forming in his spine.
"That was emotional instinct""Control it""Yes sensei" Ren stood at the doorway with his bag over his right shoulder because the left was still under protest. Shinso stood beside him with both hands in his pockets and an expression carefully calibrated to suggest he had arrived by accident rather than because Kurose had told him to wait so they could enter together. This fooled no one. Arai saw them and smiled very slightly. Kenta lifted one hand.
Reina, Mika, Fujimura, and half the room turned too quickly away from staring at Ren's bandages. The other half stared openly with varying degrees of guilt, curiosity, relief, and something Ren disliked because it looked like awe. He stepped inside. The room applauded once. Not a full round of applause. Not stadium applause. One single clap from Sano. Then he stopped himself by putting both hands under his thighs. Kurose closed her eyes for a moment.
"Thank you for demonstrating the difference between impulse and catastrophe" Sano looked proud. Ren did not know what to do with the almost-clap. Shinso muttered "This class is a hazard" Ren whispered "Low-grade""Still reportable" They walked to their seats. Ren's desk had a folded note on it. No decoration. No dramatic message. Just a piece of paper with five signatures. Kenta. Arai. Sano. Reina. Mika. Under the signatures, in Kenta's blocky writing: Alive is acceptable. Boring recovery preferred.
Do not make us write this twice. Under that, in Sano's handwriting: Team No medical division has spoken. Under that, Arai had added: Quiet room still exists. Ren sat down slowly. He read it once. Then again. The class did not watch him. They watched him by not watching him. That was kinder. Annoying. Good. He placed the note carefully inside his folder beside the medical restriction sheet. Kurose waited until everyone settled. Then she began without ceremony.
"The Sports Festival is over" No one cheered. That alone said something about the class. Kurose continued.
"Some of you advanced further than expected. Some of you did not. Some of you were seen by departments and teachers who previously had little reason to know your names. Some of you will be tempted to treat that as a verdict" Her gaze crossed the room.
"Do not" Sano raised his hand. Kurose looked at him. He lowered it.
"Good decision" He whispered "Growth" Kurose continued.
"The festival is a measurement tool. A loud one. An imprecise one. It reveals some things and distorts others. It is not your final worth. It is not your future. It is not justice wearing fireworks" Shinso's pen stopped moving. Ren noticed because Shinso almost never took notes visibly unless the sentence had gotten under his armor. Kurose's eyes moved to Ren and then away quickly enough not to make him a display.
"Visibility is not liberation. Sometimes it is merely a better-lit cage" The sentence entered the room and sat down. Sano did not joke. Arai looked at her desk. Kenta's jaw tightened. Kurose let the silence work. Then she said "Which is why today we are discussing what to do with being seen" She turned to the board. Written there were three columns. RECORD WELFARE DIRECTION Kurose tapped the first.
"Record. What happened must be written accurately before rumor, embarrassment, pride, or institutional laziness writes it badly" She tapped the second.
"Welfare. No opportunity is valid if it requires pretending students do not have bodies, families, recovery needs, or limits" She tapped the third.
"Direction. Attention is not the same as progress. You will not become smaller because the door is narrow. You will become precise" Ren had heard that before. Before the festival. Before the ring. Before Scar Tissue entered a file. It sounded heavier now. Kurose folded her hands.
"General Studies is not a waiting room. It is not also-ran territory. It is not an apology from U. A. for failing to place you somewhere more impressive" A few students looked up. Kurose said "However" The word sharpened the room.
"Some of you are pursuing transfer, cross-course evaluation, or professional pathways that require U. A. to acknowledge what you demonstrated. That process begins today for selected students. It does not begin with celebration. It begins with meetings" Sano raised his hand cautiously. Kurose nodded.
"Does the meeting have snacks?"
"No" He lowered his hand.
"Then celebration remains superior" Kurose looked at him until he sank one centimeter into his chair.
"Selected students have already been informed or will be informed individually. No one is required to share their status publicly. No one is permitted to interrogate classmates about transfer outcomes, offers, or internal evaluations. If someone tells you no, the conversation ends" Her gaze drifted across the room again.
"This includes cheerful interrogation" Sano placed a hand over his heart.
"I feel seen""Good. Improve" Ren looked down at his notes. Record. Welfare. Direction. His fingers hovered over the page. The right index finger felt normal. Too normal. One second of Scar Tension yesterday had become a quiet pressure in his mind. Smaller than the lattice. Easier to hide. More tempting because it did not look like a disaster. He wrote: Small answer ≠ safe answer. Then: Boring part exists. Then, after a pause: Do not make boring into proof either.
Beside him, Shinso wrote something and angled the page away immediately. Ren did not look. Progress by not trespassing. The morning passed in fragments. Classes were lighter because half the school was exhausted and the other half was pretending not to be. Teachers used phrases like "post-event adjustment" and "schedule stabilization" as if the entire student body had not been nationally televised while injuring themselves for institutional honor. At lunch, Ren was not allowed to carry his tray.
This became a fight. He lost. Kenta carried it with the expression of someone escorting a hostile witness.
"I can carry food""You can carry soup emotionally""That is not a thing""It is now" Shinso appeared beside them with his own tray.
"Your mother texted Kurose, didn't she?" Ren looked at him.
"How would you know?"
"Because Kurose looked at you during second period with legal hunger" Kenta nodded.
"That happened" Ren closed his eyes briefly.
"I am surrounded" Shinso said "By logistics" Kenta said "And food" Sano appeared with Arai behind him.
"And friendship" This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. Arai said "Mostly logistics" Sano pointed at her.
"Betrayal continues" They sat together at the edge of the cafeteria, not hidden, not central. Ren ate because the alternative was Hana learning he had not eaten, and the possibility of his mother escalating food compliance into a school-wide policy felt too real. A few Hero Course students looked over. Some with curiosity. Some with discomfort. Some with recognition. Kirishima raised a hand from across the cafeteria. Mina waved both hands before Uraraka pulled one down and made a sympathetic face.
Iida stood halfway from his seat as if considering a formal welfare inquiry before Midoriya, bandaged fingers held carefully, said something that made him sit back down. Bakugo did not look over. This was notable because he very clearly chose not to look over. Todoroki looked once. Ren met his eyes. Todoroki nodded. Small. Controlled. Not clean. Ren nodded back. Small. Enough. Midoriya looked like he wanted to come over and apologize for five different categories of existence. Ren lifted his right hand slightly.
Not now. Midoriya froze. Then nodded once. Good. Later. Maybe. Shinso watched the exchange.
"You have hand signals now""No""That was a hand signal""It was a boundary""Same hand. Different paperwork" Kenta said "Boundary signal sounds professional" Sano leaned in.
"Can we design a set?"
"No" Ren and Shinso said together Arai smiled into her tea. Kurose arrived before lunch ended. She did not sit. She looked at Ren, then Shinso.
"After lunch. Principal's conference room. Both of you. Bring your folders. Eat first" Shinso looked at his tray.
"I'm eating""Finish""This is targeted harassment""Yes" She left. Sano watched her go.
"Conference room" Kenta looked at Ren.
"You knew?" Ren shook his head.
"Expected. Not scheduled" Arai looked at Shinso.
"Both of you?" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Apparently" Sano whispered "One seat" Nobody laughed. The phrase had too much old blood under it. Ren put down his chopsticks. Shinso stared at his tray. Kenta looked between them and then said carefully "Maybe not" Ren looked at him. Kenta shrugged once.
"Maybe the point of making everyone watch was proving one seat was stupid" Sano opened his mouth. Arai lightly kicked his chair. He closed it. Shinso's expression did not change. But his fingers released around his fork. Ren said "Maybe" The word was not belief. Not yet. But it was not rejection. After lunch, they walked together. No one made ceremony of it. That helped. Kurose waited outside the principal's conference room.
Aizawa stood beside her, bandaged and sleep-deprived and somehow less decorative than the wall. Recovery Girl was there too, which meant the meeting had medical teeth. Present Mic stood further down the hall talking quietly with another teacher, but when he saw Shinso and Ren he gave no loud greeting, only a thumbs-up that looked almost painfully restrained. Shinso muttered "That had volume in spirit" Ren whispered "Terrifying restraint" Kurose opened the door. Inside, Nezu sat at the head of the table.
There were five chairs arranged opposite him. Ren counted. Kurose. Aizawa. Recovery Girl. Ren. Shinso. No All Might. That mattered. Maybe out of caution. Maybe because this was not his decision to dominate. Maybe both. Nezu's tea steamed beside a stack of folders.
"Good afternoon, Akiyama. Shinso" They sat. Ren took the chair with the armrest on his right side. Shinso noticed and took the chair next to him without comment, leaving space on Ren's left. Kurose noticed that. Of course she did. Aizawa probably noticed. Recovery Girl absolutely noticed because she watched all movements as if they were attempts at fraud. Nezu folded his paws.
"You both know why you are here?" Shinso said "Because the Sports Festival made ignoring us administratively inconvenient" Kurose inhaled through her nose. Aizawa's mouth twitched. Nezu smiled.
"That is one way to phrase it" Ren said "Evaluation status""Yes" Nezu placed two folders on the table. One labeled AKIYAMA REN. One labeled SHINSO HITOSHI. No ranking. No hierarchy. Ren looked at the labels. His stomach tightened. Shinso's eyes lingered on the folders too long. Nezu continued.
"Let us begin with what this meeting is not. This is not an immediate Hero Course transfer offer" There it was. Ren knew. Still. Pain flickered beneath the ribs in a place not anatomical. Beside him, Shinso went very still. Nezu did not soften the words by rushing. Good. Bad. Necessary.
"This is not a rejection either" Nezu said "You have both earned formal review beyond the standard post-festival scoring process" Shinso's hand moved under the table. Ren did not look. Aizawa spoke.
"You both demonstrated enough to make simple answers inaccurate" Shinso's voice was flat.
"Simple answer being no""Yes" Aizawa said Ren looked at Nezu.
"What answer are we being offered?" Nezu pushed a third folder forward. The title read: CROSS-COURSE HERO CANDIDATE EVALUATION TRACK Ren read it twice. Shinso leaned forward despite himself. Kurose spoke.
"This is a provisional internal track. It has existed in fragments for exceptional cases, but not in this format. Principal Nezu is formalizing it because the current transfer structure is too narrow for what the festival revealed" Shinso said "So not a seat" Aizawa said "No" Shinso's jaw tightened. Aizawa continued.
"A hallway" Ren looked at him. Aizawa's visible eye moved between them.
"You wanted a door. You got a hallway. It is longer. Less satisfying. More useful" Shinso looked down at the folder.
"Does the hallway end in the Hero Course?" Nezu answered "It can""Can""Yes. Not will" Ren said "Criteria" Kurose opened the folder.
"Attendance in selected supplemental Heroics modules. Individual training plans. Quirk safety evaluation. Rescue judgment assessment. Combat fundamentals. Ethics review. Recovery compliance. Faculty observations. Written reflection. Parent or guardian welfare coordination when applicable. Departmental recommendation review at the end of the evaluation period" Ren listened. Each criterion was a bar. Not a wall. Bars could still become walls. Duration mattered.
"How long?" Nezu said "Initial period until the end of term. Review before internships are finalized" Recovery Girl cut in.
"For Akiyama, medical restrictions override all training access. No combat modules until cleared. No Quirk activation requests without my approval. No Scar Lattice attempts under any circumstances. Scar Tension observation remains medical, not heroic training" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Say it without looking like you are negotiating with the concept of yes" He breathed.
"Yes. Medical restrictions override evaluation" Recovery Girl nodded once. Shinso looked at him. Then at Recovery Girl.
"What about me?" Aizawa answered.
"Physical conditioning. Capture weapon preparation later. Voice discipline. Situational ethics. Close-quarters movement. You will learn what to do after Brainwashing fails" Shinso looked at the folder.
"Who teaches?" Aizawa said "Me, when medically permitted by my own doctor and when your schedule allows" Recovery Girl said "Medically permitted is doing heroic labor there" Aizawa ignored her. Kurose said "Additional staff may be involved, but access will be controlled. Your Quirk will not become a demonstration toy" Shinso's face closed around something fragile. He said "Good" Nezu looked at both of them.
"There is another point. The track is not a competition between you" Neither of them moved. The sentence had been expected. It still found bone. Nezu continued.
"Your advancement or lack thereof will be individually evaluated. You may both transfer, neither may transfer, one may transfer, or one may enter partial Heroics coursework while remaining administratively in General Studies for a period. The outcome will not be framed as one of you taking the other's place" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"That is convenient now" Kurose's gaze sharpened.
"Yes. It should have been convenient before" That stopped him. Kurose continued.
"Scarcity is real in schedules, staff time, seats, liability, and training slots. But scarcity should not be turned into a moral story before all options are exhausted. U. A. allowed the standard entrance structure to define too much. This track is not charity. It is institutional correction" Ren looked at her. Institutional correction. Not apology. Not gift. Not pity. Correction. Aizawa said "You both made the old answer look lazy" Shinso looked down. Ren looked at the folder. He should feel triumph.
He felt something heavier and less clean. A hallway. Not a door. No immediate transfer. No class 1-A tomorrow. No proof complete enough to rest inside. But not no. Not invisible. Not one seat. He said "What happens to Class 1-C?" Kurose's eyes softened by one degree.
"You remain Class 1-C unless and until administrative transfer is approved. Participation in this track does not remove you from my class, from General Studies obligations, or from your classmates" Ren nodded. Good. More than good. Shinso looked at him. Maybe he had wondered the same thing. Maybe not. Kurose added.
"Nor does it make the rest of 1-C lesser. Mori, Arai, Sano, and others will receive separate post-festival opportunity reviews appropriate to their demonstrated strengths. Not everyone is pursuing Hero Course transfer. Not everyone should. That is not failure" Ren thought of Kenta making Iida work. Arai reading Dark Shadow. Sano turning absurdity into morale and somehow keeping people from collapsing under pressure. General Studies was not waiting room. Repeat until true. Nezu pushed the folders closer.
"You may accept the evaluation track now, decline, or take time to decide" Shinso barked a laugh. It came out sharper than intended.
"Does anyone decline a hallway after years of walls?" Aizawa said "Some people do when the hallway is booby-trapped" Shinso looked at him.
"Is it?"
"Yes" Nezu nodded.
"Opportunity is not neutral. This will bring scrutiny. Additional workload. Frustration. Comparison. Public speculation if any part leaks. You may be praised incorrectly. You may be criticized unfairly. You may be handled too carefully by some and too roughly by others" Recovery Girl added "And if either of you treats sleep as optional, I become an event" Ren said "Understood" Shinso said "Understood" Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Do not answer quickly because Akiyama did" He looked irritated. Then more irritated because she was right. He sat back. His fingers touched the folder but did not open it.
"What if I accept and he cannot continue because of medical restrictions?" Shinso asked Ren turned his head. Shinso did not look at him. The room held the question carefully. Kurose answered "Then you continue if you choose to continue" Shinso's jaw worked once.
"And if I advance first?" Ren said "Then you advance" Shinso looked at him. Ren kept his voice steady.
"I may resent it" Shinso's eyes narrowed. Ren continued.
"Not forever" The words were old now. Reused. Still necessary. Shinso looked down.
"What if you advance first?"
"Then you may resent it""I will""I know""Not forever" Ren nodded.
"Good" Aizawa looked between them.
"Healthy enough" Recovery Girl said "That is generous" Kurose said "That is honest" Nezu took a sip of tea.
"I believe this addresses the ghost in the room" Shinso muttered "The ghost had paperwork" Ren looked at the folder.
"Can we ask why both?" Nezu's eyes gleamed.
"You may" Ren waited. Nezu said "Because you demonstrated different failures in our existing system" That was not what Ren expected. Nezu continued.
"Shinso, your Quirk was devalued and feared because the entrance exam rewarded direct physical output and villain-point efficiency more than restraint, ethics, and rescue application of control-based abilities. At USJ and the festival, you created a record contradicting that assumption" Shinso went rigid. Nezu turned to Ren.
"Akiyama, your pre-festival record contained extensive intellect, rescue judgment, tactical capacity, and abnormal physiological data, but insufficient direct combat performance. The festival revealed that our categories failed to capture an emerging Quirk with high hazard relevance and high self-risk. It also revealed that your judgment under pressure is both valuable and in need of protection from your own reinforcement patterns" Ren stared at the table.
Kurose said "Neither of you is being admitted because you suffered publicly" The sentence cut through him. Good. Kurose continued.
"You are being reviewed because the public event produced evidence that should have been gathered more carefully in private" That was worse. Better. Both. Nezu said "This distinction matters. If we admit students only after spectacle, we have merely built a stage around our failures" No one spoke. Aizawa said "We are trying not to do that" Trying. Not succeeding. Trying mattered only when attached to systems. The folder was a system. Small. Fragile. Maybe insufficient. But real. Ren opened his folder.
The first page contained requirements. The second contained medical restrictions. The third contained a weekly schedule marked tentative. Two supplemental observation blocks. One recovery check. One written reflection session. One "non-combat rescue simulation theory" module. No direct sparring. No Quirk activation training beyond medical observation. Scar Tension listed only as "medical exploration pending clearance". He looked at Shinso's folder. Shinso had opened it too. Physical conditioning. Ethics module.
Voice-trigger safety review. Aizawa observation block. Movement fundamentals. Written reflection. Nutrition compliance. Shinso saw the last one. His face twisted.
"Why do I have nutrition compliance?" Hana was not present. Somehow her influence had crossed walls. Kurose said "Because training requires fuel" Shinso looked at Ren.
"This is your family's fault" Ren said "Possibly" Aizawa said "Eat anyway" Shinso muttered something too low to hear. Recovery Girl heard it.
"Language" Shinso stopped. Nezu folded his paws again.
"Decision?" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso looked back. No one seat. No clean victory. No immediate transfer. A hallway. Ren thought of four-year-old silence in a clinic. Of Izuku clutching a notebook. Of Shinso's official record saying Emergency Rescue Support. Of Scar Tissue written in a file. Of one ordinary finger holding one ordinary ball. He thought of the stadium seeing him because his body made survival visible. He thought of the danger of needing that again. A hallway was less dramatic than a door. Good.
Maybe.
"I accept" Ren said Shinso looked at the folder another second. Then said "I accept" Nezu smiled.
"Excellent" Kurose slid two forms forward.
"Sign here" Shinso stared.
"You already had forms" Kurose said "Institutional correction still needs signatures""Depressing""Yes" They signed. Ren used his right hand carefully. His index finger did not tense strangely. No thread under skin. Just pen pressure, ordinary and shaky. Shinso signed with sharp strokes that looked like he was challenging the paper to underestimate him. Aizawa collected the forms.
"Congratulations" Shinso looked suspicious. Ren looked wary. Aizawa continued.
"You have earned more work" Shinso exhaled.
"There it is" Ren almost smiled. Stopped before ribs. Recovery Girl saw.
"Better" The meeting ended with less ceremony than the Sports Festival and more consequence. Kurose walked them back through the corridor while Aizawa and Recovery Girl stayed behind to argue with Nezu about medical scheduling, which sounded like an activity no sane student should witness. Shinso carried his folder under one arm. Ren carried his in his right hand. They walked slowly because Ren's body required slowness and Shinso, without comment, matched it. For half the hallway, neither spoke.
Then Shinso said "So there was not one seat" Ren said "Apparently""I hate that""Yes""I built a lot of mental infrastructure around there being one seat""Demolition is inconvenient""Don't make architecture jokes while injured""Sorry" Shinso looked at him. Ren corrected "Thank you""Better" They turned a corner. Students moved around them. Some looked. Some whispered. Some stopped whispering when Shinso looked back with murder available in his eyes.
Ren said "It still may become one seat later""Yes""Or zero""Yes""Or both" Shinso looked at him. Ren clarified "Both of us. Not both seats""I understood. I just hated your phrasing""Fair" They reached the window overlooking part of the training grounds. Festival cleanup crews were removing banners. A piece of signage reading PLUS ULTRA lay half-folded near the edge of the field, waiting to be carried away. Shinso stopped. Ren stopped too. Below, students from the support course moved equipment.
Staff checked structures. A few Hero Course students crossed the grounds in small groups, medals gone, uniforms ordinary again. The festival was already becoming aftermath. Shinso said "If you transfer first, I will be angry" Ren looked out the window.
"Yes""If I get there first, you will pretend not to be angry""Yes""Don't" Ren looked at him. Shinso's face was turned toward the field, but the words were aimed directly.
"If I get there first, don't make it noble. Don't do the thing where you turn pain into proof that you are emotionally advanced" Ren stared. Shinso continued.
"Be angry. Then get over yourself and catch up" The monitor was not here to betray Ren. Still, he felt the emotional spike.
"Yes" Shinso looked at him then.
"And if you get there first, I will be unbearable for a while""Different from baseline?"
"Careful. I know where your medical forms are" Ren almost smiled. Small. Safe.
"Then be unbearable. Then catch up" Shinso nodded. The silence that followed was not comfortable. It was better. Comfort often lied. This did not. After a while, Shinso said "Your finger thing""Scar Tension""Terrible name""You said Scar Tissue was good""That was before you started naming every part like a textbook with trauma" Ren looked at him.
"Do you have a better one?"
"No""Then objection logged and ignored" Shinso clicked his tongue.
"Can it become useful?" Ren looked down at his right hand.
"Yes""Can it become dangerous?"
"Yes""Will you try to make it useful before safe?" Ren did not answer quickly. Good. Eventually he said "I will want to" Shinso nodded.
"That is a yes with witnesses""Yes""Good. I'll be annoying about it""I expected nothing less" Shinso looked back out the window.
"My thing too" Ren did not pretend not to understand.
"After Brainwashing fails" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"I hate that phrase""Yes""It is accurate""Yes""I hate that more" Ren looked at the folded banner below.
"You need a second answer""So do you""Yes" For once, the agreement did not feel like competition. It felt like two people standing at the beginning of the same hallway with different injuries, different keys, and the same refusal to call a narrow path mercy just because it was not a wall. Kurose's voice came from behind them.
"You are both late returning to class" They turned. She stood with her arms crossed. Neither of them had heard her approach. That was concerning. Shinso said "We were processing institutional correction" Kurose said "Process while walking" Ren said "Yes sensei" Shinso said "Yes sensei" They started walking. Kurose followed. After three steps, she said "For what it is worth, I am proud of you both" Both boys stumbled internally. Neither externally. Aizawa would probably have called that progress. Kurose continued.
"Do not make me regret saying it by becoming dramatic" Shinso said "Too late for him" Ren said "Too late for you" Kurose said "Good. You can still argue. Recovery is proceeding" They returned to Class 1-C carrying folders that were not transfer letters and not rejections. The room looked up when they entered. Sano opened his mouth. Kurose said "No" He closed it. Arai looked at Ren. Kenta looked at Shinso. No one asked. That mattered. Ren sat down carefully. Shinso sat beside him.
On the board, the three words remained. RECORD WELFARE DIRECTION Ren opened his notebook beneath them. He wrote: No one seat. Then below it: Not no door. Then, after a long pause: Hallway. Beside him, Shinso wrote something too. This time he did not angle the page away fast enough. Ren saw only one line. Not charity. Shinso noticed him seeing it and scowled. Ren looked back at his own page. Outside, the festival banners came down. Inside, the new work began. No applause. No medals. No clean victory.
Just a hallway where the wall had been. For now, that was enough to start walking.
