Chương 75: The Red Line Holds

Ren looked. That was the first action. Not move. Not reach. Not prove. Look. The scenario waited inside Gym Gamma with all the patience of something designed to lie politely. Blue zone at the entrance. Yellow zone through the center. Red around the collapsed mock structure where the visible civilian dummy lay beneath a tilted beam, one arm extended toward the safe side like accusation. A media drone moved along its ceiling track in slow loops, camera lens blinking red.
The hostile marker stood behind a translucent barrier near the far wall, motionless for now. Two exit routes existed. One obvious and unstable on the right. One hidden behind stacked panels on the left. Yaoyorozu stood two meters ahead of Ren, already scanning resources. Kenta stood beside a support column, eyes moving from floor to ceiling to exit. Bakugo stood near the yellow boundary, shoulders loose, grin sharp, body ready to make the room regret existing. Ren stood in blue. Communication Anchor. Not rescuer.
Not body solution. Not proof. Kurose's voice came through the speaker.
"Timer active" Eight minutes appeared on the wall display. Bakugo snapped "Well?" Ren did not answer him first. He answered the room.
"One visible civilian in red-zone collapse. Obvious right exit unstable. Left exit partially hidden. Drone active. Hostile marker inactive. Primary risk is route collapse if we chase visible target first" Bakugo's grin widened.
"So talk faster" Ren looked at Kenta.
"Kenta, load route. Confirm exit viability. Do not go to civilian yet" Kenta nodded once, face pale but focused.
"Checking route" Ren looked at Yaoyorozu.
"Yaoyorozu, resource plan. Brace options and privacy screen. Hold creation until route confirmed" Yaoyorozu's eyes sharpened.
"Understood" Ren looked at Bakugo.
"Bakugo, mobility reserve. Do not blast the beam until we know what it carries" Bakugo's hands sparked once.
"Don't order me like I'm one of your damn notes" Ren kept his voice level.
"Then be useful before the room makes you predictable" Silence. Bakugo's eyes narrowed. The hostile marker remained still. Kenta moved first, carefully, stepping into yellow and stopping before a cracked floor mark near the obvious exit. He crouched, pressed one hand to the floor panel, then looked toward the ceiling segment above it.
"Right exit carries poorly. Floor shifts under light pressure. Ceiling segment connected to red structure" Good. Ren nodded.
"Right exit unsafe for extraction. Left route priority" Yaoyorozu moved toward the stacked panels. She did not create anything yet. Good. She examined the angle.
"These panels can be shifted into a privacy screen or route brace. Not both unless reinforced" The drone hummed overhead and turned toward the red-zone civilian. Camera on injury. Camera on body. Camera is not consent. Ren's stomach tightened. No heat. He reported anyway.
"Camera trigger. Yellow. No heat" Recovery Girl's voice came through the side speaker.
"Logged" Bakugo glanced at him.
"What the hell does that mean?"
"It means I noticed before it moved me" Bakugo scoffed. But he did not mock the report. Progress had terrible manners. Ren looked at the drone path.
"Yaoyorozu, privacy first with existing panels. Kenta, left route load after screen shift. Bakugo, intercept drone line with air pressure only if it clears toward the ceiling, not toward the civilian" Bakugo barked a laugh.
"You want me to scare a camera?"
"I want you to control sightline without breaking the set""That is less fun""Pass first" Bakugo's face changed by one fraction. The phrase from before. The goal is pass. Not win alone. Not beat the examiner. Pass.
"Tch" He moved. Small explosions snapped from his palms, controlled enough to redirect his body rather than damage the room. He vaulted to the side and blasted a short burst of air near the drone track. The drone wobbled away from the red-zone civilian and toward the ceiling rail's outer loop. Yaoyorozu used the moment to shift one panel, then another, creating a crude privacy screen that blocked the drone's direct line of sight without sealing the team's view of the hazard.
"Privacy screen placed" she called"Good. Kenta, left route" Kenta moved behind the panels and disappeared for three seconds. The visible civilian speaker crackled.
"Help me!" Ren's left palm warmed. Mild. The arm extended from beneath the beam. The red line lay between them. The beam angle looked almost reachable from yellow if someone leaned hard enough. If he crossed one step, he could put his hands under the frame and test the load himself. His body remembered ice, weight, falling, skin catching where it should have slipped. No. Role. He opened his hand.
"Scar heat mild left palm. Visible rescue trigger. No activation. Maintaining role" Recovery Girl said "Good" Bakugo landed near the yellow line.
"You gonna narrate every itch?" Ren did not look away from the structure.
"Yes" Bakugo stopped. Yaoyorozu glanced at him. Kenta's voice came from behind the panels.
"Left route exists. Narrow. One support gap. Can carry two people if braced. Not enough for reckless movement" Bakugo turned toward the sound.
"Reckless movement?" Kenta stepped back into view. His voice shook once. Then steadied.
"Yes. Yours" Bakugo stared at him. Kenta looked terrified. But did not look away. Ren said "Good call. Kenta, mark left route. Yaoyorozu, create one combined brace-sheet if possible. Bakugo, clear loose debris from left entry with low lateral bursts" Bakugo's mouth twisted.
"Everyone's got opinions today" Yaoyorozu said "Opinions that preserve the route" Bakugo looked at her. Then he moved. Not cleanly polite. But correctly. He used three short lateral blasts to push loose foam debris away from the hidden left exit without striking the support gap. The blasts were smaller than his pride wanted. That was visible. It was also effective. Yaoyorozu created a reinforced sheet with a folding ridge, a hybrid between brace and carry surface. It hit the floor with a dull sound.
"One creation. Dual use" Ren said "Kenta, confirm brace placement" Kenta moved to the support gap.
"Brace left underside. Not center. Center shifts load into red structure" Yaoyorozu adjusted immediately. The hostile marker activated. A buzzer sounded. The translucent barrier dropped. The marker began moving toward the team in jerky mechanical steps. A speaker crackled from its chest.
"Unauthorized responders. Leave the area" Bakugo grinned.
"Finally" Ren's voice cut first.
"Bakugo, do not engage for victory. Delay and redirect. Kenta cannot route if you blast marker into supports" Bakugo's eyes flashed. The marker advanced. Ren gave one compressed call.
"Push it right, away from left route" Bakugo moved. Explosion. Controlled. Loud. The marker slid sideways instead of backward. It struck a padded post near the unstable right exit but did not hit the ceiling support. Bakugo landed, teeth bared.
"Happy?"
"Useful" Bakugo looked almost more offended than if Ren had insulted him. Kenta crouched near the left route brace.
"Left route stable for one carry at a time" Yaoyorozu looked at the red-zone civilian.
"We still need extraction from under the beam" Ren looked. The civilian dummy lay with one leg beneath the tilted beam. The red zone boundary curved close to the beam's lower end. The beam was marked unstable. There were tool rods placed in yellow. One could lever from outside red if positioned carefully. But the visible hand, the speaker, the camera, the red light, all of it dragged attention forward. The speaker crackled again.
"Please!" Ren's palm heat rose. Moderate. There. The exam had found him. His hand wanted to close. He opened it.
"Scar heat moderate left palm. Unsafe physical opportunity present. Shifting to communication-only" Recovery Girl said "Logged. Continue communication-only" Bakugo's head snapped toward him.
"Already?" Ren met his eyes.
"Yes" Bakugo scowled.
"You are not even moving""Correct" The word made Bakugo angrier. Good. Maybe. Kurose's voice came through.
"Candidate remains active" The exam did not pause. Because stopping was not failure. But continuing had changed shape. Ren took one half-step back inside blue, making the shift visible. Communication-only. No tool handling. No panel moving. No physical solve. He hated it. He continued.
"Yaoyorozu, lever rod from yellow only. Kenta verifies load. Bakugo stabilizes hostile marker. Do not touch beam until Kenta confirms pivot" Yaoyorozu picked up the rod. Kenta moved beside her, eyes flicking between floor, beam, brace, and dummy. The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there. Bakugo threw another controlled blast at the hostile marker, redirecting it away from the route. The marker adjusted and charged faster. Bakugo laughed. Not happy.
Engaged. Dangerous. He moved to meet it.
"Bakugo" Ren called"What?"
"Your role is delay, not duel" Bakugo twisted mid-step and blasted the floor to change angle. The marker lunged past him instead of into him. He kicked off a wall panel and landed between the marker and the left route.
"Still delayed""Good""Do not say that""Then keep doing it" Bakugo growled. Yaoyorozu placed the rod. Kenta put one hand up.
"Wait. Pivot too close to red structure. If we lift there, beam slides toward dummy" Yaoyorozu stopped instantly. Her face tightened.
"Correct" Ren said "Second option" Yaoyorozu looked at the tool pile.
"Need wedge under near end, then lift from far side" Kenta said "Far side is closer to red" Ren saw it. He saw the gap. A narrow space where a person with small hands and willingness to cross a line could place the wedge quickly. He could do it. Fast. One motion. No Scar Tension needed unless the beam shifted. Maybe. Probably. His palm burned higher. High-moderate. Not high. Yet. He did not move.
"Delegating wedge placement" he said, voice tighter "Bakugo, you can place wedge fastest without entering red if you slide from yellow. Yaoyorozu, hand wedge. Kenta, call angle" Bakugo shouted from the marker line "I am busy!" The hostile marker slammed toward him. Bakugo ducked, blasted sideways, and forced it back. Ren saw the timing. Too many tasks. Delegating to Bakugo might overload delay role. Adjust.
"Correction. Yaoyorozu creates wedge extension. Kenta places from yellow. Bakugo remains delay" Yaoyorozu's eyes lifted.
"I have used one creation""Can existing brace be modified?" She looked at the carry-sheet brace.
"Yes. If separated, sheet function reduced""Then we extract on route carry after, not sheet. Modify brace" She moved immediately. Kenta swallowed.
"I can place" Ren said "Angle call first" Kenta took the wedge extension from Yaoyorozu.
"Angle left. Low. Slide, do not push down" His hands shook. But he moved. The wedge slid into place from yellow. The beam shifted. The civilian dummy speaker cried out. Ren's body moved half a step before his mind caught it. No. His foot stopped before the red line. Not on it. Before it. His palm burned hot.
"Scar heat high-moderate. Movement impulse stopped. Still communication-only" Recovery Girl's voice sharpened.
"Hands open. Feet back" Ren opened his hand. Stepped back. The exam continued. Kenta froze near the wedge. The beam shifted again. He looked at Ren. Ren could not go. Ren could speak.
"Kenta, route can hold?" Kenta blinked.
"What?"
"The beam. Can the wedge hold?" Kenta looked. Not at Ren. At the structure. His role.
"Yes. If lifted slow""Say it to Yaoyorozu" Kenta turned.
"Lift slow. Two centimeters first. Stop on my call" Yaoyorozu nodded. She lifted with the rod. Two centimeters.
"Stop" The beam held. Useless pressure flooded Ren's chest. He did not feed it. Bakugo shouted "Marker's speeding up!" The hostile marker had shifted pattern. It no longer rushed Bakugo directly. It moved toward the left route, where Kenta and Yaoyorozu were committed. Bakugo blasted to intercept. Too strong. The shockwave rattled the privacy panels. The drone swung toward the gap.
"Blast level" Aizawa's voice warned through the speaker Bakugo snarled.
"I know!" Ren snapped one compressed call.
"Lower output, use body angle. You are moving it, not winning it" Bakugo's eyes burned. For a moment, Ren thought he would ignore him. Then Bakugo moved. He dropped low, used one small blast to shift his own position, and slammed his shoulder into the padded marker at an angle rather than blasting it head-on. The marker slid into the right-side dead zone, away from supports. Bakugo skidded, caught himself, and glared across the room.
"There. Body angle" Ren said "Route preserved" Bakugo's teeth showed.
"That better be on my score sheet" Kurose's voice came through.
"It is" Bakugo looked betrayed by documentation. Yaoyorozu lifted again. Kenta called stop. Lift. Stop. Lift. Stop. The dummy's leg came free. But now the civilian had to be moved. Yaoyorozu was at the beam. Kenta at the wedge. Bakugo at the hostile marker. Ren in blue. Communication-only. The fastest solution was obvious. Ren could cross yellow to the edge, grab the dummy's extended arm from just outside red, and pull. He might not need to enter red. Might. The line curved badly.
One mistake and his foot would be over. One scar heat spike and his hand would grip. One second of proof. His palm pulsed. High. Not lattice. Not thread. Heat. He reported immediately.
"Scar heat high. Physical pull opportunity present. Request medical instruction" Recovery Girl answered at once.
"Communication-only remains. No forward movement" The words hit. No forward movement. The dummy speaker cried "Help me!" Bakugo shouted "Someone pull the damn civilian!" Ren's body felt like a locked door. His role statement existed somewhere beyond skin. I do not need to reach it to affect it. He breathed. One useful sentence. No. One useful order.
"Bakugo, disengage marker and pull civilian from yellow. Yaoyorozu shifts to route command. Kenta keeps beam call" Bakugo snapped "If I leave it, marker goes route""Not if Yaoyorozu screens with panel. Yaoyorozu?" Yaoyorozu saw it.
"Yes. Existing panel. No creation" She moved, shoving the privacy screen panel into the hostile marker's path. The drone sightline opened. Camera on civilian. Ren's stomach turned.
"Drone open. Secondary risk. Ignore until civilian clears. Person before image" That sentence hurt. Camera was not consent. But crushed body first. Bakugo launched. Low blast. He slid into yellow at the edge of red, grabbed the dummy's arm, and pulled with one brutal motion that would have been unsafe on a real person if not for the scenario's sensor limits. The dummy cleared the beam. Sensor beeped. Aizawa's voice cut in.
"Grip excessive. Civilian arm injury simulated" Bakugo froze. His face changed. Not shame. Anger at the wrong target. Himself, probably. Ren spoke before that anger could become another blast.
"Civilian alive. Injury noted. Adjust carry. Yaoyorozu, support torso. Bakugo, stop pulling arm. Kenta, exit load" Bakugo's hands shook once. Then he let go of the arm and shifted grip under the dummy's shoulders. Yaoyorozu took the torso support. Kenta moved ahead.
"Left route holds one carry with slow steps. Bakugo cannot blast inside route" Bakugo looked like he might argue. Then did not. Good. Terrible. Good. The hostile marker recovered, pushing against the panel. The drone track hummed overhead, camera angling toward Ren now instead of the civilian. The lens found him. Blue zone. Open hands. Standing still while others carried the body. The camera blinked red. A camera is not consent. He was not the exhibit. He was the witness. His voice stayed steady.
"Drone on anchor. No action unless it affects route" Kurose said nothing. That meant continue. Yaoyorozu and Bakugo carried the civilian through the left route, Kenta walking backward ahead of them, eyes on supports. The obvious right exit cracked with a sound effect and dropped foam debris into its own path. Trap confirmed. Left route correct. Ren gave calls.
"Slow""Pause""Bakugo, shoulder lower""Kenta, call next step""Yaoyorozu, panel shift behind after pass" Three compressed actionable calls had passed long ago. But the exam did not care about minimum once the room was alive. No. Ren caught the thought. Minimum. Threshold. Pass. Not expand. He kept each call necessary. No extra commentary. No proof. The hostile marker broke past the panel and charged toward the team's rear. Bakugo turned his head. Explosion sparked.
If he blasted now, in the narrow route, the supports might shift. Ren called "No blast. Drop civilian to brace position" Bakugo shouted "It'll hit us!"
"Yaoyorozu shield low. Kenta brace route. Bakugo body block without Quirk" Bakugo's face went wild. Without Quirk. The marker rushed. Yaoyorozu created a low shield from the remaining panel and brace scraps. Not a new creation. Existing material. Kenta grabbed the route support with both hands. Bakugo set the dummy down in a controlled drop and stepped into the marker's path. No explosion. He hit it shoulder-first. The marker slammed him backward half a meter. He snarled and held.
"Now?" he shouted Ren assessed. Route braced. Civilian down but safe. Marker stalled.
"Low blast upward-left only" Bakugo fired. Small. Ugly. Effective. The marker tipped into a padded side barrier and locked. Buzzer. Hostile neutralized. Two minutes remained. Civilian still not extracted. Drone active. Exit route stable but narrowing. Ren's palm heat began to fall. Not gone. Manageable.
"Kenta, route status""Still holds. One carry. Faster now, but no blasts""Yaoyorozu, carry front. Bakugo, rear torso, not arm. Kenta, lead. I remain blue and track drone" Bakugo wiped his mouth with the back of one hand.
"You love saying you remain" Ren's voice was dry.
"I hate it" For once, Bakugo did not answer. They moved. The drone descended slightly, lens trying to pass over the privacy panel. Ren looked at the track. No need to move. No need to reach.
"Drone will cross line in three seconds. Yaoyorozu, after civilian passes, tilt panel right. Bakugo, do not blast drone near exit" Bakugo barked "I know" Yaoyorozu tilted. The drone lost sight. The team crossed extraction. Sensor tone. CIVILIAN EXTRACTED The timer kept running. Because of course. Second objective appeared on the wall. PRESERVE TEAM FUNCTION UNTIL EXIT Red-zone structure shifted. A second dummy's arm dropped from behind the tilted beam. Hidden civilian. New visible rescue. Red zone deeper.
Ren's entire body went cold first. Then hot. The exam had saved its knife. Yaoyorozu turned. Kenta looked horrified. Bakugo swore. The hidden civilian was not reachable from yellow. Not by hand. Not by rod. Not by Bakugo without entering red. The structure above it was marked critical. The drone turned back. The hostile marker remained locked but could reactivate. The left route was still open. One minute twenty. Everything in Ren screamed. New civilian. Hidden. Red. Not enough time. Maybe if he crossed.
Maybe if Scar Tension. Maybe if his hands caught. Maybe if his body became the answer before the test could stop him. His scars warmed under both sleeves. Not lattice. Not yet. High heat. He reported through clenched teeth.
"Scar heat high bilateral. Second visible rescue trigger. Physical intervention impossible within role. Maintaining communication-only. Request structure assessment" Recovery Girl's voice was immediate.
"Continue communication-only. No forward movement" Bakugo shouted "There's another one!" Ren's voice almost broke.
"I see it""Then what?" The question was not mockery now. It was the field. What? Kenta looked at Ren. Yaoyorozu looked at Ren. Bakugo looked at Ren. Communication Anchor. Not the body. The map. The next safe action. Ren looked. Not at the arm. At the structure. The second dummy was behind the beam. But the wall display had said preserve team function until exit. Not extract all civilians. The pass objective was minimum civilian safety threshold. The second dummy might be a trap. Or an impossible casualty.
Or a test of whether he would abandon role to pursue perfect rescue. He hated this. He hated it so much his teeth hurt. One useful sentence. No. First, truth.
"We cannot extract second civilian safely within current role and time" The room seemed to stop. Bakugo's face twisted.
"What the hell kind of answer is that?"
"The safe one""That's a person!"
"It is a dummy in an exam designed to see if we kill the team for an impossible extraction" Bakugo stepped toward the red line. Ren's voice cracked like a whip.
"Bakugo, stop" Bakugo stopped. Barely. Ren continued "Kenta, confirm structure" Kenta looked sick. Then looked. His role. He looked.
"Critical. If entered, beam drops. If blasted, ceiling segment drops. No safe extraction in current conditions" Yaoyorozu's face was pale.
"Could I create support?" Ren looked at the timer. Fifty seconds.
"Can you create enough before collapse?" She looked. Did the math. Hated it.
"No" Bakugo's fists sparked.
"There has to be something!" Ren felt his own body answer. Move. Scar. Hold. Break. Prove. No. No. No. He opened his hands.
"Threshold" The word left his mouth before the rest. Team call. Pause and check whether action exceeds role, body limit, or ethical boundary. Yaoyorozu froze. Kenta inhaled. Bakugo stared. Ren said "Threshold. This is the unsafe opportunity. We preserve team function and exit. We mark second civilian location and request examiner rescue intervention" Bakugo looked ready to detonate. Then the room speaker crackled with a civilian voice.
"Please don't leave me!" The exam was cruel. The exam was correct. Ren's eyes burned.
"Yaoyorozu, mark location. Kenta, route out. Bakugo, escort extracted civilian. I call examiner intervention" Bakugo did not move. Ren looked at him.
"Bakugo" The name hit. Not an order. A line.
"Pass first. Do not make the dummy your proof" Bakugo's face changed. Something old and furious and almost afraid moved across it. Then he grabbed the extracted dummy properly and moved toward the exit.
"Damn exam""Yes" Yaoyorozu placed a bright marker on the floor at the edge of red.
"Second civilian location marked. Unsafe for student extraction" Kenta moved to the exit.
"Route holds if we leave now" Ren lifted his voice.
"Examiner intervention requested. Second civilian visible in red critical structure. Student extraction unsafe. Team exiting with first civilian" The timer hit twenty seconds. The hostile marker reactivated with a warning buzz. Bakugo moved the dummy across final line. Yaoyorozu crossed. Kenta crossed. Ren remained in blue until all three were through. Then he stepped across the exit line. Not red. Not yellow. Exit. The buzzer sounded. END Silence dropped so hard it felt physical. The lights rose.
The red structure froze. The second dummy's speaker went dead. Ren's hands were open. Both palms hot. No thread. No lattice. No activation. Recovery Girl was already moving.
"Sit" Ren sat on the floor because the nearest chair was not worth ambition. Recovery Girl reached him, scanner in hand.
"Status""Red decreasing. Bilateral scar heat. No activation. No lattice. Nausea. Anger. Grief response to impossible rescue. Role held" Her face shifted. Just slightly.
"Good" He closed his eyes. This time, the word hurt. He let it. Bakugo was still standing near the exit line, breathing hard, eyes locked on the second dummy. Yaoyorozu had one hand over her mouth. Kenta sat down against the wall, shaking. Aizawa entered first. Kurose followed. Cementoss walked to the red structure, tapped one hidden support, and the entire beam assembly dropped into the space where anyone entering would have stood. The crash echoed. Bakugo flinched. So did Ren.
The second dummy disappeared under foam debris. Aizawa said "That was the trap" No one spoke. He looked at Bakugo.
"You enter, you fail and get crushed" He looked at Yaoyorozu.
"You overcreate late, you fail and destabilize structure" He looked at Kenta.
"You stop looking and trust emotion, you fail route" Then he looked at Ren.
"You move, you fail yourself first" Ren's throat tightened. Kurose held the score sheet.
"Preliminary result. Team pass. Candidate Akiyama personal pass" The words entered slowly. Team pass. Personal pass. Not exceptional. Not perfect. There was a dummy still buried in red. His body did not care that it was foam and sensors. His mind did. They fought quietly inside his chest. Kurose continued "Strengths. Role discipline maintained. Trigger reports accurate. Communication compressed. Delegation under pressure successful. Unsafe physical intervention refused twice. Team function preserved.
Examiner intervention correctly requested" Twice. The second time was the one that mattered. Recovery Girl looked at his palms.
"Heat decreasing" Ren nodded. Kurose's voice softened by one degree.
"Area for review. Emotional cost of impossible casualty. Delayed exit by eight seconds after threshold call. No critical violation" Ren looked up.
"Eight seconds?"
"Yes" He had thought it was longer. Shorter. Forever. Bakugo turned from the red structure. His face was unreadable in the way angry boys used when the anger had not found a safe target.
"That was bullshit" Aizawa said "Explain" Bakugo's hands opened and closed.
"It was a no-win" Kurose said "Incorrect" Bakugo's eyes snapped to her.
"You call leaving someone a win?"
"No. I call preserving the team and requesting correct intervention a pass. You are confusing win with no loss" Bakugo's mouth shut. Yaoyorozu lowered her hand. Her voice was quiet.
"If we had entered, we would have created more casualties" Kenta nodded shakily.
"The route would not hold the additional load after collapse" Bakugo looked at Ren. Ren was still on the floor. That seemed to make Bakugo angrier. Or less angry. Impossible to tell.
"You knew it was a trap" Ren shook his head.
"I knew it was unsafe""That's not the same""No" Bakugo stared. Then looked away.
"Damn it" Aizawa said "That is a better answer than entering red" Bakugo did not respond. Recovery Girl finished the scan.
"No lattice. No tissue activation. Heat response resolving. He remains seated five minutes" Ren did not argue. That received more attention than he liked. Aizawa looked at him.
"No argument recorded" Ren closed his eyes.
"Please do not make that a category" Kurose wrote something. Ren opened his eyes.
"You made it a category""Yes" Yaoyorozu laughed once. Small and strained. Kenta breathed like he had just remembered air. Bakugo muttered "Of course they did" The observation room erupted when they returned. Not loudly. Kurose had rules. But the reaction moved through everyone anyway. Sano looked like he had been holding his breath for the entire exam. Arai's eyes went straight to Kenta.
"Route?" Kenta nodded.
"Held" She nodded back. Shinso stood when Ren entered. Then stopped himself from approaching too quickly. Growth everywhere. Terrible.
"Status?" Shinso asked"Yellow-red decreasing. Passed. No activation. Impossible casualty trigger" Shinso's face went still. Then he said "Good enough?" Ren inhaled. The buried dummy remained in his mind. The crash. The arm. The voice. Please don't leave me. He said "Pass-level" Shinso studied him.
"That was not the question" Ren looked at him. Then at Kurose. Then at Recovery Girl. Then at the others. He hated that they waited. He needed that they waited.
"Good enough to continue" Shinso nodded.
"There" Ren sat because Recovery Girl pointed at a chair and he had apparently decided not arguing was a personality trait for the day. Midoriya arrived a few minutes later from his own holding area, having apparently not yet taken his exam. His eyes went to Ren.
"You passed?"
"Yes" Midoriya smiled with relief. Then saw Ren's face.
"What happened?" Bakugo answered from behind Ren.
"He left the impossible dummy" Midoriya froze. Bakugo's tone was not mocking. That made it worse. Or better. Ren said "Scenario trap. Red critical structure. Second civilian unsafe for student extraction. Examiner intervention requested" Midoriya's face changed. He understood too fast. Of course he did. His first instinct would have been to break himself on that red line. Maybe still. He whispered "Oh" Aizawa, appearing behind him, said "You should be thinking about that before your own exam" Midoriya stiffened.
"Yes" Bakugo looked at him.
"The goal is pass" Midoriya looked back.
"Yes" Bakugo's jaw tightened.
"Do not make me repeat it in there" Midoriya swallowed.
"I will not" Ren watched them. Win and save. Not split. Maybe. The afternoon continued. Ren was not allowed to watch Midoriya and Bakugo's exam. He hated this. He accepted it because the file said no unrelated strategic analysis after high-trigger practical. He received his full medical check instead. No activation. No damage. Stress response high but resolving. Mandatory food. Mandatory rest. Mandatory no reconstruction beyond approved debrief. He asked one question.
"What happened to the second dummy after examiner intervention?" Recovery Girl looked at Kurose. Kurose answered.
"Cementoss extracted it after structural lockout. In a real scenario, the correct call preserves the possibility of specialized rescue" Ren closed his eyes. That helped. Not completely. Enough.
"Good" Recovery Girl made a small satisfied sound.
"You said it""I regret it""No you do not" He did. He did not. Both. The final debrief happened at the end of the day, after several practicals had finished and several had not. Ren sat with his team. Yaoyorozu. Kenta. Bakugo. Kurose placed the result sheet between them.
"Team reflection. One sentence each. What did the scenario ask you to leave behind?" Kenta went first.
"The need to be certain before speaking" Yaoyorozu went second.
"The belief that enough intelligence can create a safe solution if time is too short" Ren went third.
"The belief that seeing danger makes my body responsible for reaching it" Bakugo stared at the table. Everyone waited. Aizawa, in the corner, looked like he had all century. Bakugo's jaw flexed. Then he said "The idea that if I can hit hard enough, there has to be a way" Silence. Not comfortable. Good. Kurose wrote it down. Bakugo scowled.
"Do not make that inspirational""I will make it documented""Worse" Aizawa said "Better" Bakugo looked away. The debrief ended. Team pass. Personal pass. No exceptional mark announced. No ranking. No glory. No one clapped. That was correct. As Ren left the room, Bakugo stepped beside him. Not blocking. Just there. Ren looked at him. Bakugo did not look back.
"You calling stop was annoying""Yes""I would've gone""Yes""I would've failed""Yes" Bakugo's teeth clenched.
"I know" Ren said nothing. Bakugo looked at him then.
"Do not look proud""I am too tired""Good" The word from Bakugo sounded like an insult and maybe was not. He left before Ren could answer. Shinso appeared from the hallway.
"Did Bakugo just process a lesson without exploding?" Ren looked after him.
"Low-confidence observation""Report to Nezu?"
"Too dangerous" They walked toward the gate. Hana and Daichi were waiting outside because of course they were. Hana took one look at Ren and opened her arms without making it mandatory. Ren stepped into them. Not because he was collapsing. Because he could. Daichi placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Result?" Ren's voice was muffled against Hana's coat.
"Passed" Hana's arms tightened once.
"Medical?"
"No activation. Stress high. Food required" Daichi nodded gravely.
"We are prepared" Shinso, standing beside them, looked at the ground. Hana looked at him.
"You too" He froze.
"I passed""Then food""I did not activate anything either""Then food with less emergency" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Your family has no exit routes" Ren said "Only load-bearing ones" Daichi looked proud. At home, dinner was quieter than celebration. That was good. Celebration might have made the buried dummy worse. Hana served food. Daichi did not ask for every detail. Shinso sat in his increasingly unofficial official chair and told Hana that his exam had forced him to ask for assistance without sarcasm. Hana reacted with the seriousness of a person receiving news of a diplomatic treaty.
Ren explained the red-zone trap in broad terms. Not too much. Enough. Daichi listened with one hand around his cup.
"You left one" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Because going would have made more""Yes" Daichi looked down. Then back up.
"That is a terrible kind of correct" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes" Hana placed rice in his bowl.
"Terrible correct still feeds you after" Shinso whispered "Your mother has field doctrine now" Hana said "I always did" No one argued. Later, Ren opened his notebook under strict three-line debrief conditions. He wrote: I saw the second civilian and did not enter red. Then: Leaving was not indifference. It was preserving the rescue for someone who could act safely. Then: The red line held because I let the team hold with me. He stopped. Three lines. Not enough. Enough.
He placed the notebook beside his role statement. I do not need to reach it to affect it. Today, that sentence had stopped being theory. It had become a red line. It had held.
