The first thing Hana Akiyama did after learning that U. A. wanted to create a protocol around her son's unexplained danger fragments was ask whether the protocol had food in it. The room went silent. Ren looked at her. Daichi looked at her. Kurose, who had returned to the medical waiting area with a sealed folder and the expression of someone prepared for legal, ethical, academic, and parental warfare, paused with one hand still on the chair she had been about to pull out.
Recovery Girl, standing beside the door with her cane and no patience left for anyone, smiled. It was not comforting.
"Good" Recovery Girl said "At least one person in this family understands infrastructure" Hana did not smile back. She sat in the chair across from Kurose, placed both hands on the table, and looked at the folder as if it had personally injured her child.
"If U. A. expects Ren to report frightening information that may or may not be real, while recovering from a villain attack, while still being a student, then the protocol needs more than a contact chain. It needs rules for sleep, food, medical review, emotional support, and when adults are required to take over without making him argue his way into being protected" Ren stared. Daichi leaned back slowly. Kurose looked at Hana for one long second. Then she opened the folder.
"I agree" Ren felt betrayed by the universe. Again. Hana nodded once, not pleased, only ready.
"Good" The meeting with All Might had ended twenty-three minutes earlier. Ren had spent the first five of those minutes sitting in a hallway under Recovery Girl's direct supervision while his body realized it had been holding itself together through force of argument. He had spent the next seven breathing through rib pain because standing from the meeting chair had been harder than expected and because Recovery Girl had said "interesting" in a tone that made the word sound like a threat.
He had spent the remaining eleven trying to decide how to tell his parents that All Might's secret was not a thing he could explain, that Nezu knew he knew too much, that a reporting protocol would now exist, and that none of this meant he was being turned into an oracle. Then Kurose had arrived with the folder. Hana had asked about food. And somehow that had become the beginning. Kurose placed a document on the table.
"Draft protocol. Provisional. Not active until parental review, medical approval, and Ren's explicit agreement" Ren looked at her.
"My explicit agreement?"
"Yes""That seems inefficient if the risk is immediate" Hana turned toward him. Ren stopped. Daichi said "Excellent demonstration of why the agreement matters" Kurose continued before Ren could make it worse.
"The protocol has four primary components. First, a reporting pathway. Second, medical and psychological safeguards. Third, information classification. Fourth, limits on Ren's responsibility" Hana's gaze sharpened at the last one.
"Start there" Kurose almost smiled. Almost.
"Limits on responsibility. Ren is not authorized to independently investigate, intervene, surveil, confront suspects, manipulate student behavior, or alter training conditions based on fragments. His responsibility is to report through the channel. Institutional response belongs to adults, faculty, security, medical staff, and administration" Daichi nodded slowly. Ren said "If immediate danger occurs and no adult is available" Kurose turned the page.
"There is an exception for immediate life-threatening circumstances where inaction creates clear and direct harm""Clear is subjective""Yes. So is most survival" Recovery Girl tapped her cane.
"And if you use that exception too broadly, I will make it a medical restriction" Ren looked at her.
"You cannot restrict perception""I can restrict where your body is allowed to take that perception" He stopped. Hana said "Add that" Kurose wrote something. Ren looked between them.
"You are modifying it in real time?"
"Yes" Kurose said"That seems dangerous""So does leaving it to Nezu alone" Recovery Girl said "Correct" Ren decided not to defend Nezu. Partly because they were right. Mostly because he did not have the energy to lose. Kurose moved to the first page.
"Reporting pathway. Standard reports go to me. If the fragment includes physical symptoms, scar response, pain, fever, dizziness, or other bodily changes, Recovery Girl and U. A. medical staff are notified. If the fragment includes direct security risk, I escalate to Principal Nezu. If the fragment concerns All Might, Midoriya, or classified Hero Course information, Principal Nezu determines access" Hana looked at Ren.
"Do you understand?"
"Yes""Do you agree?" Ren paused. That was different. Agreement implied consent. Consent implied he could say no. He looked at the document. A controlled channel. A place for information to go. A way not to carry black fog alone. A way to become easier to watch. Both.
"I agree conditionally" Kurose's pen stopped. Daichi's eyebrow rose. Hana's mouth tightened. Recovery Girl looked delighted in the worst possible way. Kurose said "Condition""Reports cannot be used to restrict unrelated academic participation without explanation" Kurose nodded.
"Reasonable""Reports cannot be shared with Hero Course faculty broadly""Already included""Reports cannot be used to pressure me for names when the risk of disclosure exceeds actionable value" Kurose looked at him.
"That is harder""I know""Who determines when risk exceeds actionable value?" Ren knew the answer he wanted. Him. That was the wrong answer. The room waited. He said "Initial determination by me, review by Kurose-sensei and Principal Nezu if category permits. Medical override by Recovery Girl if withholding causes visible deterioration or unsafe behavior" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Interesting" Ren looked at her.
"I am learning threat models""Flattery will not help""It was not flattery""I know. That is why it might help" Hana looked like she did not know whether to be proud or furious. Daichi looked like he had chosen both. Kurose made another note.
"We can work with that" Hana leaned forward.
"My condition" Ren turned.
"Hana" She did not look away from Kurose.
"If he reports something frightening, someone checks on him as a person, not only as an information source. Food, sleep, pain, emotional state. Every time" Ren's throat tightened. Kurose wrote immediately.
"Agreed""And we are informed when a report materially affects his safety, schedule, or medical status""Agreed""And if U. A. believes information must be withheld from us for student safety or legal reasons, you tell us that something is being withheld and why, even if you cannot give details" Kurose's pen slowed.
"That may require administrative approval" Hana's eyes hardened.
"Get it" Daichi said softly "Hana""No" she said "I am not asking for classified hero secrets. I am asking not to be told my son is fine because adults found a cleaner word for frightened" The room went still. Ren looked down. Kurose's face changed. Recovery Girl's expression lost all amusement. Daichi's hand covered Hana's on the table. Kurose said "I will push for that language" Hana nodded.
"Thank you" Kurose looked at Ren.
"You see why parental review was necessary?" Ren looked at the document. Then at Hana. Then at Daichi.
"Yes""Good" The word had become contagious since USJ. Ren was beginning to resent it. Maybe rely on it. Both were inconvenient. The review lasted forty minutes, which Recovery Girl allowed only because Ren was sitting, hydrated, and eating the rice ball Hana had produced from her bag like a tactical device. Kurose watched him eat without commenting. Recovery Girl commented twice. Daichi took notes on a printed copy with the seriousness of a man signing a treaty. Hana asked questions that made even Kurose pause.
Ren contributed less than he expected because every time he tried to turn the protocol into an elegant system, someone asked how it would prevent him from destroying himself with it. At the end, the draft had more safeguards, fewer loopholes, and an ugly temporary title. Student Risk Fragment Reporting and Welfare Protocol — Provisional Individual Use Ren stared at it.
"That title is terrible" Kurose closed the folder.
"Yes" Daichi said "Accurate though" Ren looked at his father. Daichi shrugged.
"Sometimes terrible names are honest" Hana looked at the bandage on his forearm.
"Not always" No one needed to ask what she meant. Scar Tissue had not been written anywhere official. Not yet. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. But it had entered the room anyway. After the protocol review, Ren was medically cleared to attend a controlled welfare meeting with selected 1-C students the next day, provided his pain remained stable and his parents agreed. Hana did not agree immediately. That was new.
Before USJ, school attendance had been assumed unless illness intervened. Now school was a place where villains could enter simulations and adults could ask children questions about future danger. Agreement had become something heavier. Kurose did not pressure her. Recovery Girl approved of that. Ren noticed. He wished he did not notice everything. By the time they left the medical wing, afternoon light had shifted across U. A.' s windows. The reporters were still outside the perimeter, but farther away.
Students were being escorted in small groups. Faculty moved with papers, tablets, and the blank faces of people who had not slept enough to feel shock properly. In the main waiting area, Shinso sat alone beside a vending machine. Not fully alone. A U. A. staff member stood near the reception desk. Kurose had likely arranged that. Still, the empty chairs around Shinso made a shape Ren disliked. Shinso had one foot up on the chair frame, hands in his pockets, head tipped back against the wall. His eyes were closed.
His hair was worse than usual. A sealed food container sat unopened beside him. Hana saw the container. Ren saw Hana see the container. Daichi saw both.
"This is how it begins" Ren murmured Daichi looked at him.
"What?"
"Nothing" Hana was already walking. Shinso opened one eye when her shadow reached him.
"Mrs. Akiyama""You did not eat" His eye moved to the food container.
"I considered it""That is not eating""Ren says that too""He learned it from me""Explains a lot" Hana sat in the chair beside him without asking permission. That was risky. Shinso went still, but he did not move away. She took something from her bag. A charger. Coiled neatly. Labeled with a small piece of tape. SPARE — PHONE — USB-C Shinso stared. Daichi stopped beside Ren and whispered "I feel judged""You labeled by room and use category""It is a valid system""It is now evidence" Hana held out the charger.
"You said you did not have one" Shinso looked at it like it was a trap designed by domestic engineers.
"I can get one""Yes" He did not take it. Hana waited. Ren knew that waiting. It was the same waiting she used when he needed to admit pain, hunger, fever, or fear and had decided precision could replace honesty. Shinso looked away first.
"I might forget to return it""Then return it later""I might lose it""Then tell me""I might break it""Then it will have died in service" Daichi made a wounded sound. Hana ignored him. Shinso looked at the charger again. His voice flattened.
"You don't have to do this""No" The answer was simple. Shinso blinked. Hana continued "I do not" That made it worse. Better. Both. Ren watched Shinso struggle with the fact that the absence of obligation did not remove the offered hand. Finally, Shinso took the charger. His fingers closed around it quickly, as if accepting slowly would mean something.
"Thanks""You're welcome" Hana looked at the food container.
"Eat half before you leave" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren raised his uninjured hand slightly.
"I am not involved""You are absolutely involved""Indirectly" Shinso opened the container with the expression of someone performing surrender under protest. Daichi stepped closer.
"We also have a spare wall adapter if needed" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Of course you do" Daichi looked faintly offended.
"Phones need walls" Ren said "Not all walls" Daichi ignored him. Shinso took one bite. Hana watched. He swallowed.
"There. Half""That was one bite""Large bite""It was not" Shinso stared at her. Hana stared back. He took another bite. Ren watched the scene with a strange feeling under his ribs that was not pain and therefore harder to name. The future idea did not arrive as adoption. Not legal documents. Not family. Not a room prepared. Not names changed. Only this: Hana sitting beside a boy who had expected no one. Daichi offering a charger adapter like infrastructure could become affection if labeled clearly enough.
Shinso eating because refusal had become more difficult than compliance. A small thing. Too small to count. Large enough to begin. Kurose arrived and took in the scene. Her eyes moved from Shinso's food container to the charger in his hand to Hana's expression to Ren's face. She understood too much. That seemed to be a faculty requirement.
"Shinso. Your transport is delayed fifteen minutes" Shinso looked up.
"Great" Kurose said "Akiyama family. You are free to leave" Hana stood.
"Of course" Then she looked at Shinso.
"You have Ren's number. Mine too now" Shinso's fingers tightened around the charger.
"Yeah""No dramatic reason required""I remember" Daichi added "Practical is enough" Shinso looked between them. Then down at the container.
"Okay" It was not warm. Not exactly. But it was not rejection. Hana accepted it as if it were a full conversation.
"Good" There it was again. Ren considered reporting the spread of the word as a social contagion. He did not. On the drive home, Hana said nothing for seven minutes. Daichi waited three before glancing at her in the rearview mirror. Ren waited five before deciding he did not need to ask. At seven, Hana said "That boy is too used to no one coming" Ren looked out the window. Daichi's hands tightened on the wheel.
"Yes""He tried to make the charger impossible to give him""Yes""He took it""Yes" Hana's voice softened.
"Good" Ren closed his eyes.
"You are doing the word too""What word?"
"Good" Daichi said "It has become load-bearing" Ren almost smiled. Carefully. Hana touched Ren's good hand.
"Does it bother you?" He knew she was not asking about the word. Does it bother you that I noticed him? Does it bother you that care can move sideways? Does it bother you that yesterday you almost did not come home and today your mother gave a charger to another boy who looked alone? Does it bother you that love is not scarce, but attention feels like it should be counted because fear made you the center of ours for years? Ren did not answer quickly. Good. Maybe.
"I don't know" Hana squeezed his hand.
"Good answer" Ren sighed. Daichi said "There it is again" The next day, Class 1-C held its controlled welfare meeting in a smaller classroom than usual. Not the homeroom. Kurose had selected a room with softer lighting, fewer windows, and chairs arranged in a wide circle instead of rows. The arrangement offended Ren on several levels. It had no clear front, no natural hierarchy, and no desk surface large enough for proper notes. Which was probably why she had chosen it.
Ren entered with Hana at his side because parental escort remained required for injured students. She left after confirming with Kurose, Recovery Girl by message, and Ren himself that he had water, medication, a snack, his phone, and permission to request removal from the meeting. Shinso arrived five minutes later, hair damp from rain and charger cable visible in the side pocket of his bag. Ren noticed. Shinso noticed him noticing.
"Don't""I said nothing""You thought loudly" Kenta, already sitting with one leg stretched out, pointed at Ren.
"He does that" Sano sat nearby with his knee braced, arms folded, looking uncomfortable in a circle of chairs. Arai had a bandage on one arm and soft wraps around her horn bases to reduce vibration sensitivity. Nana sat beside Reina, both quieter than before. Fujimura looked pale but present. Tamura wore different shoes and seemed personally betrayed by footwear. Several other 1-C students from other zones filled the circle. Some had visible injuries. Many did not.
The lack of visible injury made some of them look worse. Kurose stood in the circle, not outside it. That mattered.
"Good morning" The response was uneven. She did not correct it.
"This meeting has three purposes. First, welfare check. Second, factual correction of dangerous rumors. Third, preparation for how class resumes after a violent incident. It is not group therapy, though some of you need therapy and will be informed privately. It is not an opportunity to trade classified details. It is not a competition over who suffered most usefully" Her eyes moved around the circle.
"Questions before we begin?" Yabara raised a hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Are we allowed to say this sucks?"
"Yes" He lowered his hand.
"This sucks""Correct" A few students laughed. Small. Uneasy. Real. Kurose nodded.
"Welfare check. One sentence each if possible. Physical status, emotional status, immediate need. You may pass once. Passing twice means I speak to you afterward" A groan moved through the room. Kurose ignored it. They began. Arai said her horns still hurt and sudden vibration made her nauseous. Kenta said his shoulder hurt and he was angry. Nana said she was scared to close her eyes. Reina said thank you twice before Kurose gently told her gratitude was not a status. Fujimura said light made his head ache.
Tamura said his shoes felt weird and then, after Kurose waited, admitted he kept feeling like the floor might open. Sano said his knee was fine. Kurose stared. He said "Not fine. Annoying""Better" Shinso's turn came. He leaned back, hands in pockets.
"Physically tired. Emotionally annoyed. Immediate need is for people to stop looking at me like they're waiting to ask what Brainwashing felt like" Several students looked away. Kurose nodded.
"Class. You will not ask Shinso what it felt like to control villains unless he volunteers that discussion in an appropriate setting. You will not ask whether he could control you. You will not joke about him making you do homework, open doors, confess secrets, or stop talking. You will not call his emergency Quirk use creepy, villainous, or cool. If you need a phrase, use rescue support" Shinso stared at the floor. Ren watched the side of his face.
Kurose continued "His Quirk use during USJ was documented as emergency rescue support. That is the record" The room absorbed that. Sano said "Good" Shinso looked at him. Sano shrugged.
"Robots were stupid" Arai nodded once. Kenta said "Yeah" Nana whispered "He helped us" Shinso's shoulders tightened. Not with rejection. With too much. Ren looked away. Again, the moment was not his. Kurose let it stand. Then her gaze reached Ren.
"Akiyama" Ren had prepared. Of course he had.
"Physical status: rib pain, forearm laceration, shoulder impact, fatigue. Emotional status: unstable but contained. Immediate need: clarity on class schedule and media exposure limitations" Kurose looked at him.
"Try again" Ren's jaw tightened. Shinso muttered "Called it" Ren ignored him. Kurose said "You gave me a report. Try a status" Ren looked at the circle. Too many faces. Kenta waiting. Nana concerned. Sano skeptical. Shinso watching too carefully. Arai with wrapped horns and tired eyes. No easy exit. He said "I am angry that being useful still feels better than being safe" The room went silent. Too silent. Ren looked down. That had not been planned. Kurose's expression did not soften. Good.
Softness would have made it worse.
"That is a status" she said Ren breathed in. Painfully.
"Yes" Kurose nodded.
"Immediate need?" Ren considered. Then said "Supervision" Kenta blinked. Shinso's eyes widened slightly. Kurose tilted her head.
"Define""If I am left alone with yesterday too long, I will turn it into something shaped like preparation" No one moved. Kurose looked at him for a long time. Then wrote one word on her tablet.
"Good" This time, Ren did not resent it. Not fully. The meeting continued into rumors. No, Class 1-C had not been placed at USJ as bait. No, Shinso had not brainwashed half the villains. No, Ren had not predicted the attack because his Quirk was secret clairvoyance. At that one, several students looked at him. Ren kept his face still. Kurose looked over the tablet.
"Akiyama reported a security concern before the exercise based on facility risk analysis. The details are confidential. You will not speculate" Shinso's eyes flicked toward him. Ren did not move. No secret clairvoyance. Not a lie. Not truth. A controlled channel was already becoming a controlled narrative. Ren disliked that. Needed it. Both. No, All Might had not been defeated. No, Aizawa was not dead. At that, the room changed. Kurose's voice became quieter.
"Aizawa-sensei is alive. He is severely injured. Details are private. You will not circulate images, rumors, or guesses" Kenta lowered his head. Shinso's jaw tightened. Ren stared at his hands. Aizawa alive. Minimum miracle. Kurose moved on.
"Class resumption. U. A. remains open under heightened security. General Studies will resume modified instruction before full schedule. There will be no physical education until medical and psychological clearance processes are complete. Transfer candidates" Half the room lifted its head. Kurose's eyes sharpened.
"Transfer candidates will not use USJ as proof they deserve Hero Course" Silence. The sentence hit exactly where intended. Sano frowned. Kenta looked down. Shinso went still. Ren's ribs felt tighter. Kurose continued "Surviving danger does not automatically qualify you for more danger. Helping in an emergency matters. It will be recorded. It may influence faculty evaluation.
But if any of you turn yesterday into an argument that you should be placed in more hazardous training immediately, I will personally write the recommendation against it" Sano muttered "Harsh" Kurose looked at him.
"Accurate" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso's face was closed. Not because he disagreed. Because some part of him had hoped the record would become a door. Ren understood. Too well. Kurose said "Sports Festival remains under administrative review. No date changes have been announced. Do not begin unsupervised preparation. Do not challenge Hero Course students. Do not create underground training sessions.
Do not call anything recovery movement if the goal is to win an imaginary fight" Ren felt several eyes turn toward him. He said nothing. Kurose did not need to look.
"Finally, you will write two statements today. One factual, supervised, no speculation. One private welfare statement that will be reviewed only by support staff unless safety concerns appear. You may write that you are angry. You may write that you are scared. You may write that you feel fine, but if you write that and your face says otherwise, I will ask follow-up questions" Yabara raised his hand. Kurose said "No""You don't even""You were going to ask if drawing counts" He lowered his hand.
"It might help" Kurose paused. Then said "Actually, yes. Drawing may count for the private statement if labeled or explained" Yabara blinked.
"Oh""Do not waste my flexibility""No, sensei" The factual statements were difficult. Not because Ren lacked facts. Because Kurose had placed limits. No tactical analysis. No villain classification beyond direct encounter. No speculation on central battle. No fragments. No identifying students not relevant to his sequence. No language like failure point. No headings titled Errors. He hated that she had anticipated that. He also appreciated it. Maybe. The private welfare statement was worse.
He wrote nothing for seven minutes. Shinso, seated two chairs away, wrote one sentence and stared at it like it had insulted him. Kenta wrote aggressively. Nana cried while writing. Reina put one hand near hers but did not touch until Nana nodded. Sano wrote three lines, crossed out two, then looked ready to fight the paper. Arai drew. Ren looked at his page. Private welfare statement. He wrote: I do not know how to separate being glad I helped from being afraid that I liked being useful. Then stopped.
The sentence sat there, ugly and too alive. He added: I know the difference between pain and permission in theory. Yesterday made the theory harder. He wanted to cross it out. He did not. Kurose collected the statements face down. When she reached Ren, she did not read his immediately. She simply placed it under the others. That was kind. Or professional. Both, maybe. At the end of the meeting, students left slowly. No one seemed eager to enter the hallway.
The classroom had become unpleasant, but it was known unpleasantness. The hallway led back to U. A., and U. A. was no longer only school. Ren stood carefully. Shinso appeared beside him.
"Supervision?" Ren looked at him.
"You heard""The whole circle heard""Yes" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Brave" Ren considered.
"Humiliating""Same hallway sometimes" That was unexpectedly good. Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"Don't write that down""I don't have my notebook""Good" Kurose approached them.
"Akiyama. Shinso. Your guardians have been notified that the meeting ended" Shinso's face closed at the plural he did not have. Kurose continued "Shinso, U. A. transport is delayed again" His jaw tightened.
"Of course" Ren's phone buzzed. Hana. He read the message. I am outside. Ask Shinso if he wants a ride to the station or wherever U. A. allows us to take him. No pressure. Practical. Ren stared at it. Shinso looked suspicious.
"What?" Ren held up the phone. Shinso read. His face did three things too quickly to name. Kurose read too. Her expression remained neutral in a way that confirmed interest.
"She is offering transport" Ren said"I can use U. A. transport""Yes""It's delayed""Yes""I don't need""I know" Shinso glared.
"Stop saying that""Okay" Silence. Kurose said "U. A. can authorize Mrs. Akiyama to take you to the station if you consent. Not to your placement address without additional approval" Shinso looked at her.
"You checked fast""I anticipated the question" Ren looked at Kurose. She ignored him. Shinso stared at the floor. Then at the hallway. Then at the charger cable in his bag. Then he said "Station is fine" Ren texted Hana. Station is fine. The reply came immediately. Good. I brought extra onigiri. Shinso closed his eyes when Ren showed him.
"Your mother is a threat""Yes" Kurose said "A beneficial one" They walked out together. Hana waited near the entrance with an umbrella, a small bag, and the expression of a woman pretending the bag did not contain food. It was raining lightly. Not enough to be dramatic. Enough to make the campus smell like wet concrete and new security barriers. Ren's ribs hurt as they walked. Shinso walked slower than usual without commenting on it. Hana noticed both.
She gave Ren the umbrella handle because his right hand worked, then gave Shinso the food bag. He stared.
"For the station" Hana said"I didn't""I know" He took it. This time faster. Maybe less defensively. Daichi pulled the car around. Shinso hesitated at the back door. Ren said "You can sit in front if you want" Shinso looked at him.
"What?"
"Some people dislike back seats" Shinso's expression sharpened. Then hid.
"I don't care" Ren did not answer. Hana opened the front passenger door.
"Front is open" Shinso looked trapped by consideration. Then got in front. Ren sat in the back with Hana. Daichi glanced at Shinso as he started the car.
"Station?"
"Yeah""Which entrance?" Shinso blinked.
"Main is fine""Main has reporters near the west side today. East entrance may be quieter" Shinso stared. Daichi drove before he had to answer. Ren looked out the window. Hana sat beside him, not smiling. Good. Smiling would have made it too much. For most of the drive, nobody spoke. Then Daichi said "There are onigiri in the bag" Shinso looked down.
"I know""One is tuna mayo. One is salmon. One is plain salt" Shinso looked at Ren in the rearview mirror.
"Does your family label food emotionally too?" Ren said "Only logistically" Daichi said "Food emotions are Hana's department" Hana said "Food is not emotional. People are emotional when unfed" Shinso looked at the bag. Then out the window.
"Thanks" Hana answered from the back.
"You're welcome" At the east entrance to the station, Daichi pulled over. Shinso opened the door, then stopped. Rain dotted the pavement. He looked at the food bag. The charger cable. The station. The car.
"Thanks for the ride" Daichi nodded.
"Anytime practical" Hana said "Message when you get there" Shinso stiffened. Ren expected refusal. Instead, after a pause, Shinso said "Fine" He stepped out and closed the door. Then leaned down slightly toward the open window, eyes on Ren.
"Don't write a report" Ren said "Don't skip food""Annoying""Yes" Shinso left. They watched him enter the station before Daichi pulled away. Hana exhaled only when he was inside. Ren looked at her.
"You are going to worry""Yes""He may not want that""Most people do not get full authority over whether others care" Ren looked out the window. Rain slid across the glass. Daichi said "Does that bother you?" Ren remembered the car ride after U. A. Hana asking if it bothered him. He gave the same true answer.
"I don't know" Hana's hand found his. This time, he did not feel the need to analyze why. That evening, Ren opened his notebook under supervision. The word still felt ridiculous. Accurate. He wrote for five minutes. Not a report. Not a map. Not a sequence. Kurose says surviving danger does not qualify you for more danger. Correct. Unpleasant. Shinso's Quirk was recorded as rescue support. Good. Hana gave him a charger. He took it. Daichi drove him to the quiet station entrance. He sat in front. Small route.
Possible road. Ren paused. The last line looked different from the rest. Possible road. Not strategy. Not adoption. Not rescue. Just road. He thought of the U. A. entrance letter. General Studies as wrong door. Same building. Now, a car ride to a station after rain. A charger. Onigiri in a bag. A boy who said fine instead of no. Roads did not always announce themselves. Sometimes they were built from practical things no one called important until later. His phone buzzed. Shinso. Got there. Then: Ate tuna one.
Then, after a pause: Tell hostage negotiator it was acceptable. Ren showed Hana. She smiled. Not too much.
"Acceptable is good" Ren typed: She says acceptable is good. Shinso replied: Do not make that a theme. Ren looked at the notebook. Too late, perhaps. He wrote one final line. Not alone does not begin as a promise. Sometimes it begins as logistics. He closed the notebook before anyone asked. For once, the page did not feel like a wound trying to organize itself. It felt like something smaller. A record of one day after the disaster. A day when U. A.
made protocols, 1-C said true things badly, the media sharpened its story, and one boy who expected no one accepted food, a charger, and a ride to the station without calling any of it rescue. Ren leaned back carefully against the pillows. His ribs hurt. His scar itched. His phone stayed quiet. Outside, rain continued against the windows, soft and ordinary. For now, ordinary was enough work.
