Kurose wrote three sentences on the board. A QUESTION IS NOT AUTHORITY A CAMERA IS NOT CONSENT SILENCE CAN BE A STATEMENT Ren disliked all three because they were correct. That had become a pattern. Class 1-C sat in one of U. A.' s media training rooms, which looked far too polished to be safe.
There were cameras on tripods, soft lights, folding chairs, a small raised platform, two microphones, and a row of Business Course students holding tablets with the focused hunger of people trained to turn other people's hesitation into usable data. Not hostile hunger. That did not make it harmless.
Present Mic stood near the platform with one hand on a microphone he was not allowed to use at full volume because Recovery Girl had entered before the session and said that if he aggravated any post-Hosu headaches, she would make his next medical exam educational. He had believed her. Everyone believed her now.
Kurose stood at the front beside a Business Course teacher named Matsuda, a narrow woman with silver glasses and an expression that said public relations was not kindness, but it could keep kindness from being eaten alive. Aizawa leaned against the wall. He looked like he wanted to be asleep and also like he would catch every mistake before it hit the floor. Ren sat between Shinso and Arai. Kenta and Sano were behind them. Across the room, selected Hero Course students occupied the other row. Midoriya. Iida.
Todoroki. Uraraka. Yaoyorozu. Bakugo. Kirishima. Tsuyu. Tokoyami. Mixed training had moved from floor to language. That was somehow worse. Sano leaned forward and whispered "This room has villain lighting" Arai whispered back "It has standard interview lighting""That is what I said" Shinso looked at the cameras.
"I hate every object here" Ren nodded.
"Broadly accurate" Kurose turned from the board.
"Today is Public Exposure Lab One" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"Sounds fake" Matsuda looked at him.
"Most public image disasters begin with someone believing communication training is fake" Bakugo's eyes narrowed. Present Mic grinned.
"She's right, little listener. The mic does not care about your intentions" Kurose tapped the first line.
"A question is not authority. Someone asking you something in public does not create an obligation to answer" She tapped the second.
"A camera is not consent. Being recorded does not mean you owe performance, confession, pain, gratitude, outrage, or a simplified identity" Ren wrote that down. Slowly. Kurose tapped the third.
"Silence can be a statement. But silence can also be interpreted by others. Today we train the difference between refusal, redirection, correction, and silence" Matsuda stepped forward.
"You are not here to learn how to lie. You are here to learn how not to let someone else's bad question decide the shape of your truth" Midoriya wrote so fast his pencil squeaked. Aizawa said "Midoriya" Midoriya froze.
"Sorry""Do not apologize. Write slower""Yes" Shinso muttered "He apologized for being told not to apologize" Uraraka whispered "He is working on it" Present Mic clapped once. Softly. A restrained miracle.
"Format. Each student receives one simulated media question from Business Course. You have three options. Answer with boundary. Redirect to verified information. Decline. No speeches unless asked. No trauma dumping. No legal admissions. No heroic slogans unless you want Kurose to materialize paperwork" Kurose said "I am already here""Exactly" Matsuda looked over her tablet.
"First group. Midoriya Izuku" Midoriya stood so quickly his chair almost fell. He caught it. Progress. He stepped onto the platform, shoulders tense, hands open at his sides. A Business Course student with short black hair and a clean blazer lifted a tablet.
"Midoriya, several online commentators claim first-year students played a larger role in Hosu than official reports suggest. Is U. A. hiding the truth?" The room tightened. Midoriya's face went pale. Ren's right hand flattened on his notebook. No heat. No fragment. Just danger in language. Midoriya opened his mouth. Closed it. Good. Breathe first. Aizawa's eyes narrowed. Midoriya breathed.
"I cannot comment on an ongoing incident review" Matsuda said "Continue only if useful" Midoriya swallowed.
"I am grateful to the pro heroes, medical teams, and civilians who helped people survive. I will not speculate beyond verified information" Kurose wrote. Present Mic nodded.
"Boundary and redirect. Good" Midoriya's shoulders lowered. Bakugo muttered "Boring" Aizawa said "Correct" Bakugo looked offended. Midoriya returned to his seat looking as if boring had become a personal achievement. Uraraka patted the table once near his hand. Not touching. Good.
"Momo Yaoyorozu" Matsuda called Yaoyorozu stepped forward with perfect posture. Too perfect. Her question was about whether prestigious students received better agency opportunities and whether U. A.'s merit system favored wealth and family background. Yaoyorozu's face tightened. She answered after a pause.
"Access is not distributed equally in society. It would be irresponsible to pretend otherwise. My responsibility is to use the training I receive well and support systems that make opportunity less dependent on background" Matsuda's eyebrows rose. Kurose wrote something. Aizawa looked faintly awake. Yaoyorozu stepped down with her hands trembling only once.
Uraraka whispered "That was amazing" Yaoyorozu whispered back "I feel as if I swallowed a speech and a knife" Ren wrote: Access acknowledged without self-erasure. Useful. Then Todoroki was called. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions. He stepped onto the platform like someone entering a room where the floor might belong to his father. A Business Course student read the question.
"Todoroki, after Endeavor's public role in Hosu, are you planning to work more closely with him? Should the public view this as a reconciliation between father and son?" The room chilled. Not from his Quirk. From everyone trying not to react. Ren's left forearm remained cool. Todoroki did not look at him. Good. This door was his. Todoroki's answer came after three breaths.
"My father's public actions are his. My training decisions are mine. I will not discuss family matters as public interpretation" Silence. Then Kurose wrote one word. Excellent. Todoroki looked at the board. His mouth almost moved. Shinso leaned toward Ren.
"The word evolved" Ren whispered "Dangerous" Todoroki returned to his seat without looking at anyone. But his left hand was relaxed. Iida was next. The room changed again. He stood with a brace under his uniform and walked to the platform without perfect speed. That was good. Painful. Good. His Business Course question came from the same black-haired student, voice careful but still sharp.
"Iida, as Ingenium's younger brother, do you intend to carry his legacy after the Hero Killer's attack?" Iida's hand moved toward his glasses. Stopped. The whole room seemed to wait around the name. Ingenium. Not order. Not weapon. Maybe resting. Iida spoke slowly.
"My brother is alive" The first sentence was not an answer. It was a boundary.
"He is not available as a headline. His legacy is not something I can claim because he was injured. I intend to become a hero who honors rescue before reputation. That is all I will say" The room held very still. Kurose wrote: Name protected. Ren's throat tightened. Iida stepped down. Midoriya looked like he wanted to cry and salute simultaneously. Bakugo looked away. Not mockery. Not softness either. Something else. Uraraka went next.
Her question was about whether wanting to earn money made her less selfless than other heroes. Her eyes flashed.
"No. People need money to live. Families need money to recover. Heroes are workers too. I want to help my parents and save people. Those goals are not enemies" Matsuda actually smiled.
"Clear correction. Strong" Uraraka looked startled. Then pleased. Kirishima whispered "Hardcore" Uraraka sat down, cheeks pink but chin raised. Then Shinso's name was called. He stared at the platform. The platform did not care. Ren looked at him.
"Status?" Shinso did not move.
"Yellow. Irritation. Fear of predictable question. Wanting to look bored so no one sees it" Ren nodded.
"Good report" Shinso stood. He walked to the platform like a person approaching a legal trap with cameras. The Business Course student did not soften the question.
"Shinso, after recent villain incidents and increased public fear, should mind-control-type Quirks be monitored more strictly before students with those Quirks enter hero work?" The room went silent in a different way. This was not Hosu. This was old. Shinso's face went flat. Too flat. Aizawa pushed off the wall by one inch. Kurose's pen paused. Shinso looked at the camera lens. Not at the student. Not at Ren. At the thing that would have been public if this were real.
"Quirk category is not intent" His voice was low.
"Oversight should apply to conduct, consent, training, and accountability. Not fear of a word. My Quirk requires ethical restrictions. So do strength Quirks, fire Quirks, explosion Quirks, and every Quirk that can harm someone when used badly" Bakugo's eyes sharpened. Todoroki looked down at his left hand. Shinso continued.
"If the question is whether my Quirk needs rules, yes. If the question is whether fear gets to decide my future before my choices do, no" Kurose wrote: Fear is not a policy. Aizawa's eyes softened by exactly no visible amount. Shinso stepped down. Ren did not look at him immediately. Friendship. Probably. Bakugo was called next. He went up like he intended to defeat the microphone. Matsuda nodded to a different Business Course student.
"Bakugo, after the Sports Festival medal ceremony and your internship placement with Best Jeanist, some viewers say your public image is a liability. Are you trying to repair your image?" Bakugo smiled. It was not friendly.
"My image can choke" Kirishima covered his face. Aizawa's eyes closed. Matsuda said "Pause" Bakugo bristled.
"What?"
"Do you want that as your answer on camera?" Bakugo's mouth opened. Closed. He looked furious that the question had worked. Kurose said "Try again. Same meaning. Less self-sabotage" Bakugo looked as if he would rather eat the microphone. Then he forced out "I am training to become a hero who wins and rescues. If my public image gets in the way of that, I will fix what gets in the way" Present Mic made a strangled sound of approval. Kirishima whispered "That was so much better" Bakugo pointed at him.
"Do not sound proud""I am a little proud""Die" Aizawa said "Bakugo" Bakugo sat down with enough force to threaten the chair. Matsuda said "Significant improvement" Bakugo glared at the floor. Ren found himself writing: Same meaning. Less self-sabotage. He underlined it once. Then Kurose called him.
"Akiyama Ren" The room seemed to inhale. Ren stood. No scar heat. No thread. No fragment. Only the cameras. The platform. The lens. The sentence. Being watched is not consent. He stepped onto the platform. The light was warm. Too warm. No. Not heat. Lighting. Report.
"Yellow. Camera exposure. No heat. No activation" Recovery Girl, present through the medical station near the wall, said "Logged" Matsuda nodded to the black-haired Business Course student. The student looked at Ren, then at the tablet.
"Akiyama, the Hero Killer appeared to reference your Sports Festival rescue as an example of authentic heroism. Do you feel validated that even someone like Stain recognized your heroic instinct?" The room became glass. Clear. Fragile. Dangerous. Ren felt everyone not moving. Midoriya's guilt. Iida's pain. Todoroki's fire held under skin. Shinso's anger. Bakugo's attention. Kurose's readiness. Aizawa's silence. Recovery Girl's threat. The camera lens reflected a small, distorted version of him back at himself.
Not Painproof. Not Scar Hero. Not exhibit. Witness. He breathed. In. Hold. Out. Then answered.
"No" The word landed. Not enough. He continued.
"A murderer cannot validate a rescue" Kurose's pen moved. Ren kept his hands open at his sides.
"My Sports Festival choice was made to prevent immediate harm. It was costly, imperfect, and medically serious. I will not discuss medical details, and I will not allow Stain's ideology to define what my action meant" The Business Course student followed the script.
"But some people say your action proves his criticism of false heroes had truth in it" Ren's jaw tightened. He did not rush.
"Hero society can have real flaws without making a murderer a moral authority" Present Mic went very still. Ren continued.
"A true criticism can still become a false altar. I will not stand on his" Silence. Then Matsuda said "Boundary, correction, refusal. Strong" Kurose wrote: Refuse the frame. Ren stepped down. His legs did not shake until he sat. Shinso leaned slightly toward him.
"Status?"
"Yellow. No heat. Delayed tremor possible""Food after?"
"Yes""Good" Ren closed his eyes. The word was everywhere. This time, it stayed small enough to hold. The lab continued with smaller questions. Kirishima handled one about reckless bravery. Tokoyami handled one about dark Quirks and fear with poetic restraint that made Sano whisper "I have been outdramaticed by a bird" until Arai elbowed him. Tsuyu corrected a question about mutation-type Quirk assumptions so cleanly that Matsuda looked genuinely pleased. At the end, Kurose faced the room.
"You will all write one refusal sentence. Not a public statement. A private anchor for when someone tries to make you answer the wrong question" Ren already knew his. Still, he waited. Aizawa said "Do it before you feel clever" Everyone wrote. Ren wrote: I refuse the frame that makes my body the evidence. He looked at it. Then added: I answer as witness, not exhibit. Good. No. Useful. He kept both. After the session, Matsuda approached him while the others packed. Kurose remained nearby. Not hovering. Yes hovering.
Matsuda stopped at a respectful distance.
"May I speak?" Ren looked at Kurose. Kurose nodded once. Ren said "Yes" Matsuda held her tablet against her chest.
"The question was deliberately unsafe within training boundaries. You handled it well. I want to clarify something from the Business Course perspective" Ren waited.
"Public language can exploit. It can also protect. Those of us trained in communication are not automatically predators, but we become dangerous when we forget that our subject is a person before a message" Ren studied her.
"Do Business Course students learn that?" Matsuda's mouth tightened.
"Not enough" Honest. Interesting. She continued "I am adding today's refusal-frame model to my first-year ethics materials. With your name removed" Ren looked at her.
"Why tell me?"
"Because using your statement without telling you would repeat the problem in a cleaner coat" Kurose's expression almost changed. Ren said "Thank you" Matsuda nodded.
"Thank you for the sentence" After she left, Shinso appeared at Ren's shoulder.
"She is terrifying in a paperwork way""Yes""Useful?"
"Yes""Worst category" Ren almost smiled. They walked out together. The day should have ended there. It did not. Nezu requested a brief meeting after final period. Brief had become another unreliable sentence. Ren arrived in the principal's office with Kurose and Recovery Girl. All Might was present as Toshinori because the room was secure. Aizawa was not present. Again, the boundary mattered. Nezu placed a folder on the low table. FINAL EXAM STRUCTURE — CROSS-COURSE INTEGRATION Ren's pulse rose.
Hope had learned to arrive dressed as paperwork. Kurose noticed.
"Status""Yellow. Hope spike. No heat""Logged" Nezu smiled.
"Your Cross-Course Track will participate in adapted final examinations" Ren looked at the folder.
"Adapted how?"
"Written exams as normal. Practical examination separate from the Hero Course standard teacher-combat model, but with integrated components" Recovery Girl said "No direct combat exam for you" Ren nodded.
"I assumed""Good. Saves me yelling" Nezu opened the folder.
"For you, the practical will assess hazard communication compression, role discipline under restriction, Scar Tension release control, mixed-team coordination, and emergency protocol compliance under simulated exposure pressure" Ren read the first page. It sounded like him. It sounded like all the ways adults had found to stop him from turning himself into a blunt object.
"Pass condition?" Kurose answered "Not victory. Competency threshold""Transfer relevance?"
"Yes" There it was. The word did not appear. But the door did. Not open. Visible. Ren reported before anyone asked.
"Yellow-high. Hope and fear. No heat. Wanting to overperform" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"There it is" Toshinori's face softened. Nezu looked pleased in the dangerous way of intelligent animals and principals.
"Good report" Ren exhaled.
"What happens if I pass?" Kurose did not soften.
"You remain in Cross-Course Track pending further review. Passing supports continued candidacy. It does not guarantee transfer""What happens if I fail?"
"You remain in Cross-Course Track pending review. Failure identifies training needs. It does not erase candidacy unless safety failure is severe" Ren looked at the page. A test that was not a verdict. Strange. Suspicious. Necessary. Nezu folded his paws.
"There is also a conditional future consideration" Ren looked up.
"Training Camp?" Kurose's eyes flicked to Nezu. Recovery Girl's mouth tightened. Toshinori's expression became careful. Nezu said "Conditional discussion only. No approval yet. If your final exam performance, medical status, fragment stability, family consent, and staff review support it, participation in a controlled role at summer training camp may be considered" Ren's body went still. Camp. Outside U. A. Hero Course proximity. Controlled role. Forest. Training. Villains. No. The last association had no image.
Only a pressure drop. Ren reported immediately.
"Yellow-red. Camp concept triggered threat association. No image. No heat. No activation" The room shifted. Kurose wrote. Recovery Girl leaned forward. Nezu's eyes sharpened. Toshinori's face lost color.
"What kind of association?" Kurose asked Ren closed his eyes. Trees. Dark. Running. Smoke. Masks? A hand reaching. Not clear. Not enough.
"Low-confidence. Forest or external camp. Threat. Students. Possible villain association. No specific identities. No location. No timing beyond camp concept. Could be generalized fear from USJ and Hosu" Nezu was silent for a moment. Then said "Noted" Recovery Girl said "That does not help the approval case" Ren opened his eyes.
"No" Kurose looked at him.
"What do you want?" The question felt unfair. Fair. Terrible. He looked at the folder. Final exams. Competency threshold. Training camp conditional. Threat association. Door. Risk. Hope.
"I want to go eventually" Recovery Girl's expression hardened. Ren continued before she could speak.
"I also want the threat association reviewed before anyone pretends wanting is enough" The room held that. Toshinori nodded slowly.
"Good" Ren almost laughed. Not from humor. From the absurd relief of wanting something and not being allowed to use want as proof. Nezu closed the folder.
"Then that is our next structure. Final exams first. Camp only after evidence" Ren nodded. Evidence. Not pain. Not desire. Evidence. He could work with that. Maybe. That night, dinner at the Akiyama apartment became a policy summit disguised as curry. Hana read the final exam summary. Daichi read the training camp conditional note twice.
Shinso, present because homework had somehow become dinner-adjacent again, read his own adapted final exam structure with the expression of someone discovering a trap built specifically to help him. His practical would assess physical movement, second-answer discipline, ethical Brainwashing use, capture-weapon fundamentals, and cooperation without provocation. He looked at Ren.
"They tailored torture" Ren nodded.
"Competency threshold""Still torture" Hana placed curry in front of him.
"Eat before opposing pedagogy" Shinso took the spoon automatically. Then froze. Daichi noticed.
"Past guest status includes automatic utensils" Shinso stared at the spoon.
"That sounds legally significant" Ren said "You can refuse" Shinso looked at the curry.
"I object and accept" Hana nodded.
"Good" Shinso closed his eyes.
"The word owns me now" Ren almost smiled. After dinner, Ren opened his notebook. He wrote: Visible under control. Then: Question is not authority. Camera is not consent. Silence can be statement. Then: I refuse the frame that makes my body the evidence. Then, after a pause: Final exams first. Camp only after evidence. His pen stopped on the word camp. Trees. Dark. Smoke. A hand reaching. Not clear. Not enough. He wrote: Wanting the door does not make it safe. Then: Fear of the door does not make it false.
He closed the notebook. Across the table, Shinso looked up.
"Bad line?"
"Future line""Worse""Yes" Hana placed fruit between them without comment. Daichi adjusted the repaired lamp, which flickered once and then stayed on. Bentaro leaned by the door, allegedly just an umbrella and obviously not. The apartment held. Outside, cameras watched other things for now. Inside, Ren kept the next door in a folder instead of in his body. Final exams first. Camp later. Evidence before wanting. It was not peace. It was structure. For now, that was enough to keep hope from becoming another order.
