Chương 20: What Arrival Costs

Ren Akiyama learned that evacuation was not escape. Escape sounded complete. Escape suggested distance, clean air, doors closing behind danger, and the body receiving permission to stop preparing for impact. Escape was a word for stories told afterward by people who had survived long enough to simplify. Evacuation was uglier. Evacuation was movement through corridors that still shook. It was teachers counting heads with faces too controlled to be calm.
It was students limping because the alternative was being carried and they hated that more than pain. It was staff shouting instructions in voices sharpened by fear they did not have time to show. It was the sound of a fight continuing behind walls while everyone not strong enough to affect it was moved somewhere safer and forced to accept that safer did not mean safe. Ren walked beside Shinso under U. A.
security escort, one hand pressed against his bleeding forearm, the other gripping the strap of his bag because the body liked anchors when the world turned too large. Kurose led the group. She did not look back often. She did not need to. Every time someone slowed, she knew. Every time a student's breathing changed, she heard. Every time Ren looked toward a side corridor instead of the route ahead, her voice arrived before his foot moved.
"Akiyama" He faced forward.
"Yes, sensei""Again""Yes, sensei" Shinso walked close enough that his shoulder almost brushed Ren's.
"You are terrible at being evacuated" Ren kept his eyes forward.
"You stayed last too""I'm also terrible at it""Accurate""Don't sound pleased""I am not" The corridor turned sharply and opened into a larger internal staging area that had been converted into triage. U. A. staff had moved fast. Portable screens separated treatment spaces. Emergency blankets lay stacked on a rolling cart. Medical responders checked students, marked injuries with colored bands, and directed groups toward secured exits or holding areas.
A wall monitor displayed zone status without live feeds now, all maps and alerts and red blocks of warning text. Ren counted automatically. Class 1-C students from their shelter: fourteen. Additional General Studies students in triage: at least nine. Hero Course students visible: none in this room yet. Staff: seven medical, five security, two faculty including Kurose, one unknown administrator. Exits: main double doors behind security line, side corridor locked, service stair blocked.
Threat access: low if doors held. Low did not mean none. Kurose turned.
"Sit along that wall. Injured first. No wandering. No speculation loud enough to start panic. No attempts to access restricted information. No self-triage in place of actual triage" Her eyes stopped on Ren.
"That last instruction was not general" Ren said "Understood" Shinso snorted. Kurose pointed at him.
"You too" His expression flattened.
"I wasn't bleeding""You are pale, shaking, and pretending emotional shock is boredom" Shinso's mouth closed. Ren looked at him. Shinso looked away. Kurose said "Sit" They sat. The wall was cold through Ren's blazer. The contact made his shoulder ache. The cut on his forearm had slowed but not stopped; his sleeve clung wetly to the skin. The slice across his cheek stung whenever sweat reached it.
His ribs, already offended by the entrance exam and worsened by the villain's baton, had settled into a deep, layered pain that spread whenever he breathed too much. Functional. The word felt less convincing each time he used it. A medical responder crouched in front of Sano first because his knee had swollen visibly. Then Arai. Then Fujimura. Then Nana and Reina, who had no obvious physical injuries but shook so badly that the responder marked them for observation anyway. Ren watched the process.
Kurose watched him watching. When the responder reached him, she paused.
"You are Akiyama?"
"Yes" She glanced toward Kurose. That was not good.
"Kurose-sensei already briefed medical staff?" Ren asked The responder blinked. Kurose said from across the room "Sit still" The responder gave him a look that suggested agreement.
"Left arm" Ren extended it. She cut the sleeve open rather than pulling it back. Hana would be upset about the uniform. Strange thought. Small. Human. Useful, maybe. The cut along his forearm was longer than he had estimated. Shallow in most places, deeper near the center where the knife had caught and dragged before he moved. Blood had spread into the fabric, making the injury look worse than it was. Probably.
His old burn scar lay nearby, redder than usual, the raised tissue tense around the edge of the new wound as if the body had decided history was relevant. The responder cleaned the cut. Pain sharpened. Ren did not move. She looked at his face.
"You can react""I am""Internally?"
"Yes""Try externally next time. It helps us" He considered that. Then nodded.
"Pain level?"
"Four at rest. Six when cleaned""Ribs?"
"Prior contusion from entrance exam. Reinjured by baton impact and wall impact" Her hands paused.
"Entrance exam?"
"Yes""How long ago?"
"Recent enough to be relevant" Kurose made a sound from across the room. The responder looked unimpressed.
"Pain with deep breath?"
"Yes""Dizziness?"
"Minor earlier. Not current""Head impact?"
"No""Cheek?"
"Knife graze""Shoulder?"
"Impact against wall and door""Anything else?" Ren began listing.
"Right palm old healing laceration from entrance exam, no reopening. Hip bruise from entrance exam, not relevant. Forearm cut current. Cheek current. Rib impact current. Shoulder current. Possible lip bite. General fatigue. No known loss of consciousness" The responder stared. Then wrote quickly.
"You do that a lot?"
"Catalog injuries?"
"Yes""Yes""Is it useful?" Ren paused. The automatic answer was yes. The honest answer was worse.
"Sometimes" Her expression softened slightly.
"That was a better answer" She wrapped the forearm with practiced efficiency. No healing Quirk. Good. Not enough. Good. Recovery Girl would come later if needed, and Ren did not know whether he wanted that. Healing cost resources. He had spent too many already. Another impact rolled through the facility. Not near them. Far. Central. Everyone in triage froze. The wall monitor flickered. Central Plaza: critical. Then another impact. Then another. The rhythm changed. Faster. Heavier. Not scattered villain movement.
A fight between things too strong for the room that held them. All Might had engaged. Ren's body wanted to stand. Kurose did not even turn.
"Akiyama" He remained seated.
"Yes, sensei" Shinso leaned forward, elbows on knees, eyes fixed on the monitor.
"Can you tell what's happening?"
"No""Liar""Not enough""That's different""Yes" The impacts continued. One. Two. Three. The third shook dust from the ceiling vents. A younger General Studies student started crying again. Kenta shifted closer to her without seeming to notice he had done it. Nana covered both ears. Sano clenched his jaw through knee pain. Arai pressed her palms to the floor and closed her eyes, horns vibrating so fast their tips blurred. Ren watched her.
"Arai" She opened one eye.
"Too much" This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
"Can you locate direction?"
"Central. Moving across the plaza. Big impacts. One pattern fast. One heavier. The heavier one isn't falling" Ren's throat tightened. The heavy combatant could absorb or redirect impacts. Or All Might was not hitting cleanly. Or both. He looked at the monitor. No live feed. Good. Bad. Nezu's voice came from a speaker near the triage desk. Not broadcast to the whole room, but audible to Kurose and the closest staff.
"Kurose. Status of Shelter B extraction group" Kurose picked up a wall receiver.
"Fourteen students extracted to secondary triage. No critical injuries. Several minor to moderate. Akiyama conscious and under treatment. Shinso conscious. Sano mobile with support. Fujimura Quirk strain. Arai responsive but sensory overload risk""Thank you" A pause. Then Nezu's voice sharpened.
"Akiyama" Kurose's head turned toward him.
"No" Ren had not moved. Yet. The speaker continued.
"If he can speak without standing, I would like his assessment" Kurose's expression became dangerous. Ren did not envy Nezu. Then again, perhaps Nezu did not experience being envied in ordinary ways. Kurose said "He is injured""I am aware""He is a student""I am also aware" Kurose held the receiver too tightly. The triage responder looked between them and silently continued bandaging Ren's arm. Ren said "I can speak" Kurose looked at him.
"You always can. That is not the same as should" He accepted that. Then said "Assessment may reduce risk" Her eyes narrowed.
"For whom?" Good question. He had no clean answer. Nezu answered before Ren did.
"For active command" Kurose closed her eyes for one second. Then held out the receiver.
"You remain seated" Ren accepted the receiver.
"Yes, sensei" Nezu's voice arrived directly now.
"Akiyama. We have limited visibility. External response is entering, but the central engagement is ongoing. Based on vibration reports and the short feed you saw, what do you infer about the heavy combatant?" The triage room seemed to narrow. Ren felt Shinso look at him. Kurose too. Medical responder. Kenta. Maybe half the wall. He chose his words carefully. Names were traps. Certainty was a trap. Memory was a trap.
"Observed evidence is insufficient for confirmation" Nezu said "Proceed with uncertainty stated" Ren breathed in shallowly.
"The heavy combatant appears designed to withstand blunt-force engagement from high-output opponents. If All Might is striking repeatedly and the impact pattern remains in the plaza instead of moving outward, then either All Might is being constrained, the opponent is absorbing or resisting the blows, or All Might is limiting force to protect nearby students and staff" Another impact shook the room. Arai flinched. Ren continued.
"If the goal is to kill or publicly damage All Might, the enemy may prefer prolonged engagement in front of witnesses or while he is protecting wounded. If All Might cannot create distance, the fight remains dangerous to everyone near central" Nezu did not respond immediately. Then "Recommendation" Recommendation. The word was absurd. He was fifteen, sitting on the floor with a bandaged arm, being asked to offer recommendations about a fight between the Symbol of Peace and something built to survive him.
The world had become stupid. Or honest. Ren said "Remove witnesses and wounded from visual range. Prioritize extraction of Aizawa, Thirteen, and immobilized students if possible without drawing the heavy combatant. Do not send ordinary staff into direct line. If the heavy combatant resists impact, displacement may be more effective than damage. All Might may need open space or vertical ejection route rather than continued ground exchange" Silence. Longer this time.
Nezu said "That is a very specific tactical conclusion" Kurose's eyes sharpened. Ren's hand tightened around the receiver.
"Yes""Based on?"
"Impact pattern. Heavy combatant behavior. Facility risk. All Might's known combat style. The fact that they came prepared""And the part you are not saying?" Shinso's face changed. Kurose went still. The medical responder pretended not to listen. Ren looked at the floor. At the blood drying near his shoe. At the bandage around his forearm. At the room full of students who had been civilians because U. A. had asked them to play people in danger and then danger had arrived without caring about educational intent.
He said "Still unaccounted for" Nezu's voice softened by almost nothing.
"Noted" Then, after a pause.
"Thank you, Akiyama. Return the receiver to Kurose and receive treatment" Ren gave it back. Kurose took it slowly. Her expression did not change until the receiver was against her ear.
"Principal. I will be adding my own comments to this conversation later""I expect nothing less" Kurose hung up. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Shinso said quietly "Displacement instead of damage" Ren looked at him.
"What?"
"You said that like you already knew hitting it wouldn't work" Ren said nothing. Shinso's eyes did not leave him.
"You are getting worse at lying""I am tired""That too" The medical responder finished the bandage and moved to examine his ribs.
"Lift your arm" Ren obeyed halfway. Pain stopped the rest. She gave him a flat look.
"Do not make me guess because you think being still is heroic""I do not think that""Good. Then stop doing an excellent impression" Kurose muttered "I like her" The responder palpated along his rib line. Ren's breath caught. There. Pain bright enough to take the room out of focus for one second. The responder's expression changed.
"Possible fracture. You are done walking unless necessary""I walked here""You were full of adrenaline and poor judgment. Both are temporary medications with side effects" Shinso said "I like her too" Ren looked at him. Shinso looked away innocently. Another impact shook the room. This one was followed by a sound that did not belong to the heavy combatant. All Might. Not a word. A roar. A human voice forcing itself beyond injury, beyond fatigue, beyond whatever limit a symbol was allowed to admit.
The triage room went silent. Even Kurose. Even the medical staff. Everyone knew that voice. The wall monitor flickered. For one moment, the Central Plaza feed returned. Bad angle. Dust. Motion blur. All Might was moving faster than the camera could hold, body a streak of red, blue, white, and violence. The heavy combatant met him blow for blow, its body absorbing impacts that should have ended buildings. Shockwaves broke the floor around them.
The hand-covered leader stood back, hunched and furious, watching like a child waiting for a toy to break. The black-fog villain hovered near the edge of the fight, attention split between escape routes and the students being dragged out by staff. Then All Might changed. Ren saw it in one fraction of video. Not more power. Different intention. The strikes stopped trying to break the heavy combatant where it stood and started moving it. Angle. Step. Impact. Lift. Another strike. Displacement.
Ren's hand tightened on the bench edge. He had not caused that. All Might did not need him. Good. Of course. Still, seeing the conclusion appear in the fight after he had spoken it made his stomach twist. The feed cut out again. The impacts accelerated. Faster. Faster. Faster. Too many to count. Arai curled forward, hands over her horns. Ren leaned toward her despite the responder's warning.
"Cover with blanket. Pressure dampens vibration" Nana moved first, grabbing an emergency blanket and wrapping it gently around Arai's head and horns without covering her face. Arai's breathing eased by a fraction. Good. The facility shook. One final impact cracked through USJ like thunder trapped under glass. Then silence. Not true silence. There were alarms, voices, distant footsteps, someone crying. But the fight-sound stopped. Every person in triage waited. The monitor flashed. Central Plaza: stabilizing.
Then: Primary threat displaced. The words appeared with bureaucratic absurdity. Primary threat displaced. Ren almost laughed. He did not. His ribs would not allow it anyway. Kenta whispered "Did he win?" No one answered. Then the facility speakers crackled. Present Mic's voice burst through, strained but alive.
"Students and staff, remain in secured positions! Reinforcements are on site! Follow faculty instructions! Repeat, follow faculty instructions!" The room exhaled. Not relief. Not yet. But the first shape of it. Kurose lowered her head for one second. Only one. Then she was upright again.
"Continue triage. No one leaves until cleared" Sano leaned back against the wall.
"Primary threat displaced sounds like the worst way to say All Might punched something out of the building" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Probably accurate though" Ren said "Displacement was likely optimal" Everyone looked at him. He stopped.
"That was not conversationally useful""No" Shinso said "But there he is" The medical responder taped his ribs firmly.
"Breathing will hurt. Move less. If pain spikes or breathing worsens, you tell someone immediately""Yes" She pointed one gloved finger at him.
"Not after cataloging it for fifteen minutes" Ren adjusted.
"Yes""Better" A noise rose near the triage entrance. Staff moving fast. Ren turned his head despite every instruction. A stretcher passed through the far side of the room. Aizawa. For one second, Ren saw him clearly. Too clearly. His face was covered in blood. One arm immobilized. The skin around his eyes swollen and damaged. His hair lay limp now, no longer lifted by active Quirk use.
He was conscious or close to it, because his mouth moved once when a staff member spoke, but consciousness did not make the image better. A shield after impact. Ren's stomach hollowed. Shinso stood halfway before catching himself. Kurose looked at him. He sat back down. Barely. Aizawa's stretcher disappeared behind the medical screens. No dramatic speech. No teacherly comment. No reassurance. Just a body that had held the line until the line broke over him.
Thirteen was brought next, injured but moving one hand, surrounded by staff. Several Hero Course students followed in small groups, some walking, some supported, some crying, some silent. Uraraka entered with dust on her uniform and eyes red but focused. Iida was beside her, face pale with guilt and urgency, one arm held stiffly as if he had run harder than his body liked and still thought it was not enough. Tsuyu supported Mineta, who was shaking violently. Other students came in pieces.
Izuku arrived last among the visible group, not on a stretcher this time, but supported by a staff member and limping badly. Ren's body leaned forward before thought. The medical responder pressed a hand against his shoulder.
"No" Ren looked at her. She did not blink.
"No" He sat back. Izuku saw him anyway. Of course. Green eyes moved across the triage room, found Ren, and widened. Then they moved to Shinso, Kenta, Sano, Arai, the bandages, the blood, the emergency blankets. His face changed. Guilt. Ren hated that face. Even here. Especially here. Uraraka followed Izuku's gaze and lifted one hand weakly. Ren nodded. Iida bowed from across the room, too formal even in shock.
Shinso muttered "He bowed during a mass casualty event" Ren said "Consistency can stabilize""That was almost kind""Do not tell him" A staff member directed 1-A students to another triage section. Izuku looked like he wanted to come over, but the staff guided him away. Good. He needed treatment. Also good because Ren did not know what he would say if Izuku came close while Aizawa's blood was still visible in the room. Bakugo entered under his own power, furious and scraped, with Kirishima beside him.
Both looked as though they had fought hard enough to forget fear until after. Bakugo's eyes swept the triage area, landed on Ren, narrowed at the bandages, then moved on without comment. That absence of comment felt louder than an insult. Todoroki entered alone, untouched enough to seem unreal, though his eyes told a different story. He looked at the injured students, the staff, the blood, and then away toward the central plaza entrance as if measuring a debt only he could see. The room filled with survivors.
Not heroes and civilians now. Not cleanly. Just students. Different courses. Different injuries. Different roles. Same disaster. Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso was watching the Hero Course students with a face too controlled to be neutral. The robots had measured nothing about this. Nothing. Not the way Shinso had stopped a villain with one word. Not the way Sano had held a corridor. Not the way Kenta had refused to let Ren turn himself into a sacrificed piece.
Not the way Nana had wrapped Arai's horns because someone had given her a task and she had chosen to keep functioning. Not the way civilians could become the difference between a shelter and a pile of leverage. A test could be official and still wrong. Kurose walked over and crouched in front of Ren and Shinso. That alone was alarming. Kurose did not crouch unless she wanted to lower the emotional temperature of a conversation or examine a problem at eye level.
"You are both alive" Shinso said "Working on it" Ren said "Yes" Kurose looked at Shinso first.
"Use of Quirk?"
"Yes""Against?"
"Hostiles. Verbal response obtained. Used to disarm, delay, and redirect. Released when no longer safe""Any civilian or student control?"
"No""Any coercion beyond emergency necessity?" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"No" Kurose nodded.
"Good" The word hit Shinso visibly. Not because it was dramatic. Because it was simple. Good. His Quirk had been used in an emergency and a teacher had called it good. Ren looked away because the moment was not his. Kurose turned to him.
"Akiyama. You gave strategic assessment to the principal while injured""Yes""That will be discussed""Yes""You moved a civilian group through restricted maintenance areas""Yes""You engaged hostiles""Delayed""That is not a denial""No""You sustained injuries""Yes""You concealed or minimized several""Not intentionally" Shinso snorted. Kurose did not look away from Ren.
"That will also be discussed""Yes" Her expression shifted. Barely.
"You kept fourteen students alive long enough to be extracted" Ren's throat tightened. The sentence should have felt like praise. It felt like math with missing names.
"Not alone""No" Kurose said "Good" There it was again. Good. Not as reward. As correction. Not alone was better. Ren looked at the floor.
"Yes" Kurose stood.
"You will both be interviewed after medical clearance. Not interrogated. Interviewed. If that changes, I will tell you" Shinso said "That's reassuring in the least reassuring way possible""Good. It was accurate" Ren almost smiled. Almost. The next hour blurred into layers of treatment, counting, instructions, and waiting. Recovery Girl arrived like an angry omen. The atmosphere changed instantly. Medical responders straightened.
Students who had been arguing about whether they were fine reconsidered their positions. Even Kurose's expression shifted into something like respect sharpened by concern. Recovery Girl moved from bed to bed, chair to chair, stretcher to stretcher, deciding whose injuries needed her Quirk and whose only needed cleaning, bandaging, fluids, immobilization, and lectures. Her face when she saw Aizawa made the room colder. Her face when she saw Ren made it sharper.
"You again" Ren sat straighter. Bad idea. Pain corrected him. Recovery Girl pointed her cane.
"Do not perform posture at me" He slowly returned to the wall. She looked at Kurose.
"I was told this one was in General Studies" Kurose said "He is""He is collecting injuries like extra credit" Ren said "I am not" Both women looked at him. He stopped. Recovery Girl examined his bandages, cheek, ribs, shoulder, and the older healing palm with increasing displeasure. When she reached his forearm, her eyes narrowed at the red, tense edge of the old burn scar near the new cut.
"This scar reacted?" Ren hesitated. Recovery Girl saw it.
"Do not waste my time""Yes""How?"
"Heat sensation. Tightness. Increased sensitivity during and after impact and laceration""Pain?"
"Yes""Different from the new cut?"
"Yes""Hm" Ren disliked that sound more each time. She touched the area around the old scar gently, not the new wound. He felt it too clearly. Not painful. Too clear. Her eyes sharpened.
"You are exhausted""Yes""Underfed for current expenditure?"
"I ate breakfast""You spent breakfast hours ago and then apparently auditioned to be structural support" Shinso muttered "He did" Recovery Girl glanced at him.
"You too?" Shinso froze.
"Me?"
"You used a mental Quirk under life-threatening stress, look like you have not slept since childhood, and are standing because you think sitting means admitting something" Shinso sat. Immediately. Ren stared. Recovery Girl looked back at him.
"Learn from him. He has survival instincts when threatened by the correct adult" Kurose made a sound suspiciously close to approval. Recovery Girl decided on limited healing for Ren's forearm and ribs after warning him twice that her Quirk was not permission to continue moving. The kiss landed through sterile barrier and turned the forearm from hot pain into deep ache. The rib treatment was worse.
It pulled fatigue from marrow, made his breath catch, and left him hollow enough that Kurose ordered a recovery drink before he could pretend otherwise. His scar prickled throughout. Recovery Girl noticed. Of course. No one commented in front of the room. That was almost more concerning. By the time Ren could stand again, the facility had shifted from active crisis to controlled aftermath. Police had arrived. Villains were restrained or gone.
Staff moved with the grim efficiency of people beginning to understand how many reports would be written before anyone slept. Students were grouped by class, department, and injury status. Parents had not yet been allowed inside, but calls were being prepared. Ren's phone had remained in his bag. He imagined Hana seeing a U. A. emergency alert before hearing his voice. His stomach twisted. Kurose appeared beside him.
"Call your parents as soon as communications clear. You will tell them you are alive before any other detail""Yes""Not functional. Alive" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Shinso stood beside him, hands in pockets again. His face looked worse now that the crisis had slowed. Gray under the eyes. Mouth tight. Shoulders heavy. Ren said "You did well" Shinso looked at him. The words seemed to strike wrong. Then right. Then wrong again.
"I controlled people""You stopped villains""Same mechanism""Different context""Convenient distinction""Necessary distinction" Shinso looked toward the area where Hero Course students were being checked.
"I used it and people were relieved" His voice was quiet. Ren did not answer too fast. Some moments punished quickness. Finally, he said "The entrance exam used robots" Shinso laughed once. No humor.
"Yeah""Robots do not answer""Yeah""The exam was wrong for you" Shinso looked at him.
"And you?" Ren looked at his bandaged arm. At the triage room. At the students. At the door beyond which All Might had arrived late and still changed the ending.
"The exam was incomplete" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Of course yours gets a more annoying word""Incomplete allows correction""Wrong does too""Sometimes" They stood in silence. Then Shinso said "Sports Festival" Ren looked at him. The words sounded different now. Before, Sports Festival had meant transfer. Public measurement. A chance to force U. A. to look again. Now it also meant something else. A stage after a villain attack. A society watching children perform strength because people needed reassurance that the next generation of heroes still existed.
A system turning trauma into spectacle because that was what hero society did when shaken. Ren thought of Kurose's board. A society that depends on heroes will forgive systems for failing as long as someone photogenic arrives afterward. He said "Sports Festival" Shinso heard the weight.
"Less exciting now?"
"More important""That's worse""Yes" A security officer approached.
"Akiyama Ren. Shinso Hitoshi. Principal Nezu requests both of you after medical clearance. Kurose-sensei will accompany you" Shinso exhaled.
"There it is" Ren looked at Kurose. She stood near the officer, arms folded. Her presence helped. Not enough to make the request harmless. Nezu had asked for both of them. Shinso because his Quirk had worked against real villains after failing a robot exam. Ren because he had predicted too much, moved too efficiently, and admitted part of his basis was deliberately unaccounted for. The next measurement would not be public. It would be a conversation. Ren adjusted the strap of his bag with his uninjured hand.
His body felt heavy, healed only enough to continue being examined. His scar was quiet now, but not asleep. Somewhere beyond the triage area, All Might was still alive. Aizawa was still alive. Students were still alive because many people had paid different costs in different places. Arrival had mattered. So had delay. Both were true. Kurose looked at him.
"Can you walk?" Ren considered the pain. The fatigue. The risks of answering poorly.
"Yes" Her eyes narrowed. He corrected.
"Slowly""Better" Shinso stepped beside him.
"Functional?" Ren looked at him. The word had been theirs, then mocked, then sharpened, then made almost useless by the day.
"No" Ren said Shinso blinked. Kurose's expression shifted. Ren breathed carefully.
"Alive. Walking. Not functional enough to be unsupervised" Kurose nodded once.
"Good" The praise should not have hurt. It did. They followed her out of triage, away from the students, away from the fading noise of emergency response, toward a smaller secured room where Nezu waited. Behind them, USJ continued to hum with alarms, cleanup, and the aftermath of a symbol arriving late. Ahead, the principal of U. A. prepared to ask a General Studies student what part of his impossible assessment had remained unaccounted for.
