Chương 52: When They Do Not Answer

Shinso Hitoshi's first real lesson with Eraser Head began with the most insulting object imaginable. A chair. Not a weapon. Not a training dummy. Not a capture scarf. Not a padded villain simulation, voice-response drill, underground movement course, or any of the dozens of possibilities Shinso had unwillingly imagined since Aizawa told him there would be future inconvenience. A chair.
A plain metal folding chair sat in the middle of Gym Gamma's auxiliary assessment room, positioned on the mat with the kind of deliberate ugliness that made it obvious someone had placed it there on purpose and expected him to take the purpose seriously. Shinso stared at it. Aizawa stood beside the chair with both arms folded, bandages still visible at his neck and wrist, looking like a man who had seen students disappoint him in more creative ways than furniture complaints.
Kurose stood near the wall with a clipboard. Because of course she had a clipboard. Akiyama was not there. That was probably good. It was also annoying. Shinso had not expected to want Akiyama there. Want was too strong a word. He had expected that Akiyama would be present because the universe had recently developed a habit of making their humiliations educationally synchronized.
Instead, Akiyama had a medical check with Recovery Girl and was banned from anything involving mats, slick surfaces, smooth plastic, emotional provocation, and possibly gravity. Shinso stood in front of a chair alone. This was worse. Aizawa looked at him.
"Status" Shinso closed his eyes for half a second.
"We are doing this again?" Aizawa said nothing. That was apparently answer enough. Shinso exhaled.
"Tired. Not injured. Annoyed. Ate breakfast. Slept badly. Did not skip water because several terrifying adults have formed a hydration cartel" Kurose wrote. Shinso looked at her.
"Do not write hydration cartel in an official document" Kurose's pen did not stop.
"Too late" Aizawa pointed at the chair.
"Sit" Shinso looked from him to the chair.
"This is training?"
"Yes""Heroic""Sit" Shinso sat. The chair creaked. Nothing happened. Aizawa watched him. Shinso waited. The silence stretched long enough to become personal. Finally, Shinso said "Am I supposed to feel something?" Aizawa's visible eye narrowed.
"You answered first" Shinso stared.
"What?"
"You were uncomfortable. You filled the room" Kurose wrote again. Shinso turned toward her.
"That was not a Quirk exercise" Aizawa said "Everything is a Quirk exercise if your Quirk begins with people answering you" That shut him up. Against his will. The chair became more insulting. Aizawa stepped closer.
"Most people think your problem is that your Quirk is frightening" Shinso's hands tightened around the chair edge.
"It is""No. That is their problem. Your problem is that you built too much of yourself around waiting for the first response" Shinso looked up sharply. Aizawa continued as if he had not just walked through a locked door and started inspecting furniture inside Shinso's ribcage.
"You provoke. They answer. Your Quirk works. Or you provoke. They do not answer. Your rhythm breaks. Or they answer and break free. Your plan becomes improvisation with a body you have not trained enough" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"That sounds like several problems""It is""Encouraging""No" Kurose looked up.
"Accurate" Shinso glared at the chair instead of either adult. Aizawa said "Stand" Shinso stood.
"Sit" He sat.
"Stand" He stood.
"Sit" He sat.
"Stand" He stood. By the sixth repetition, irritation crawled up his spine. By the eighth, he was doing it too fast. By the tenth, his knee hit the chair leg. Metal scraped against mat. Aizawa said "Stop" Shinso stopped halfway down, thighs burning, posture ridiculous. Aizawa asked "What changed?"
"My respect for education" Kurose said "Useful but not relevant" Shinso inhaled through his nose.
"Frustration. Speed increased. Attention shifted from movement to annoyance. Knee clipped the chair" Aizawa nodded once.
"Good" Shinso's face twisted.
"There it is" Aizawa ignored him.
"Again" Shinso sat. Stood. Sat. Stood. Slower. Less dramatic. More aware. The chair remained a chair. This became infuriating because he began to understand the exercise. Aizawa was not teaching him to sit. He was teaching him what his body did when nothing exciting happened. That was somehow worse. After twenty repetitions, Shinso's thighs burned slightly and his pride burned more. Aizawa said "Stop" Shinso stood still.
"The first lesson. Your body leaks before your Quirk does" Shinso's mouth opened. Then closed. Kurose wrote. Aizawa continued.
"You want people to fear the word Brainwashing less. Start by making your body less obvious when you are angry, baited, or denied the first answer" Shinso looked at the chair. Denied the first answer. The phrase found a place beside Akiyama's release and stayed there without permission. Aizawa pointed to the yellow tape on the floor.
"Walk" Shinso looked at it.
"Again?"
"Until walking stops offending me""You are impossible to satisfy""Correct" Shinso stepped into the taped hallway. Walked. Turned. Returned. Aizawa stood at the side, not moving much. His injuries were obvious if one watched too closely. Shinso watched too closely by accident. Aizawa's left shoulder did not relax fully. His weight distribution favored one side by a fraction. His hand flexed only when the bandaged wrist stiffened. The man should not be teaching. The man was teaching anyway.
Shinso hated that he respected it. Aizawa said "Your eyes moved" Shinso stopped.
"What?"
"You noticed my injury pattern" Shinso's back stiffened.
"I was not""You were. Good. Notice. Do not get caught noticing" Kurose wrote. Shinso looked at her.
"Do you write all the mildly invasive things?" Kurose said "Only the relevant ones""All mildly invasive things feel relevant here" Aizawa said "Again" Shinso walked again. This time, Kurose began asking questions.
"Did you sleep badly because of the training or because of the Sports Festival?" Shinso kept walking. No answer.
"Do you believe Aizawa's attention means you were finally proven right?" No answer.
"Did Akiyama getting a Quirk file before you got a transfer meeting make you angry?" His foot almost hit the tape. Almost. He corrected. No answer. Aizawa said "Better" If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. Shinso wanted to say something cruel. He did not. That was probably the point.
Kurose asked "Are you afraid that if you become more physically capable, people will fear your Quirk more because you will finally look like the threat they already imagined?" Shinso stopped. Not because his foot crossed the tape. Because the room crossed something. Aizawa did not rescue him from it. Kurose did not soften it. Shinso stared at the far wall. He could feel the answer in his throat like a hook. Yes. Obviously yes. Of course yes.
If he became competent, the people who already called him dangerous would call themselves proven right. If he learned to move silently, strike cleanly, bind opponents, fight after Brainwashing failed, then every fearful adult could point and say they had known. Villainous Quirk. Villainous skill set. Villain-shaped boy, now upgraded. His hands curled. He did not answer. Aizawa said "Continue" Shinso's first step was ugly. The second was less ugly. The third was functional.
He reached the far marker, turned, and walked back. Kurose did not ask another question until he returned to the start. Then she said "Good" Shinso hated the word. He also wanted to keep it. That was inconvenient. Aizawa picked up a short strip of cloth from the table. Not his full capture weapon. A training strip, pale gray, weighted at one end.
"Catch" He threw it badly. Not toward Shinso's chest. Toward his left shoulder, low and diagonal. Shinso reached with his hand first. Missed. The cloth hit his arm and fell. Aizawa looked at it on the mat.
"Again" He threw it. Shinso caught it with both hands. Aizawa said "Dead in a fight" Shinso glared.
"It is cloth""Your opponent appreciates your optimism" Kurose's pen moved. Shinso looked down at the strip in his hands. Aizawa stepped closer.
"You chase the object. Move your feet first" Again. They repeated the throw until Shinso's embarrassment became too repetitive to remain sharp. Step first. Hand second. Catch with the body behind the hand. Do not flinch backward. Do not grab like the cloth is an apology. Do not make the shoulder do work the feet refused. At one point, Aizawa demonstrated. It was almost nothing. A shift. A foot angled. A hand rising only after the body made the line possible.
The cloth moved around his wrist, turned once, and landed wrapped over his own forearm. Shinso stared despite himself. Aizawa unwrapped it.
"Tool does not make you me" Shinso snapped his gaze up.
"I did not say anything""Your face did""Everyone keeps saying that to people in this program""Because both of you have loud faces" Kurose said "Akiyama's is more medically expressive. Yours is more prosecutorial" Shinso turned.
"I hate how specific that is""Good""No" Aizawa threw the cloth again. Shinso stepped first. Caught. Not cleanly. Better. Aizawa nodded.
"Again" By the time Kurose called water break, Shinso's shirt stuck to his back and his thighs burned from the chair, the walking, the catching, the repeated indignity of being told his feet had opinions. He drank because not drinking would become a report, and because somewhere in the last few days food and water had transformed from normal things into evidence of whether he could be trusted with opportunity. He hated that too.
Aizawa sat on the edge of the mat, not because he was tired, obviously, but because his body had made a private agreement with pain that looked suspiciously like sitting. Shinso did not comment. That was respect. Probably. Aizawa looked at him.
"Why Hero Course?" Shinso almost laughed.
"That question?"
"Yes""Now?"
"Yes""Is this another trap where my body answers?"
"Everything is that trap" Shinso leaned against the wall and looked at the training strip in his hand. For years, the answer had been simple because anger had made it simple.
"Because they said I couldn't" Aizawa said nothing. Kurose also said nothing, which was much worse. Shinso exhaled.
"Because if I become a hero, the word villain stops fitting" Aizawa said nothing. Shinso looked down.
"Because the first time my Quirk was useful for rescue, people wrote it down differently and I wanted that to be real" Kurose's pen stopped. Shinso heard it. He kept going before silence could make him regret honesty.
"Because at USJ, people listened when I told them to move. Because Akiyama looked at my Quirk and did not make the disgust face. Because Midoriya almost lost and still told me I nearly beat him. Because if I quit now, every person who called my Quirk villainous gets to become right retroactively" His mouth twisted.
"Because I am petty" Aizawa said "Good" Shinso stared.
"No. That was clearly not the good part" Aizawa's visible eye remained flat.
"Spite can start movement. It cannot sustain a career. Know where it is in the engine and do not mistake it for fuel" Kurose wrote that down. Shinso looked at her.
"Can I have that sentence?" She tore a small corner from her note sheet and wrote it cleanly. Spite can start movement. It cannot sustain a career. She handed it to him. Shinso stared at the paper.
"This school is psychologically aggressive" Aizawa said "Again" Shinso folded the paper carefully and put it in his pocket. Aizawa noticed. Of course. He stood. The next exercise was falling. Shinso discovered that dignity and mats were natural enemies. Aizawa did not throw him. That would have been faster and probably more satisfying for everyone except Shinso's spine. Instead, he taught him how to go down safely from kneeling, then from crouching, then from standing. Chin in. Exhale. Slap mat. Distribute force.
Protect head. Do not stick arm out like an idiot who wants a wrist fracture. Do not turn falling into defeat. Falling is information about gravity, not your worth as a person. Kurose wrote that down too. Shinso hit the mat wrong six times. By the seventh, he began to understand. By the tenth, he was sweating and furious. By the twelfth, he landed without panic. Aizawa said "Good" Shinso lay on the mat staring at the ceiling. The word had started to feel less like praise and more like a stamp confirming survival.
He did not know whether that was better. The door opened. Recovery Girl entered with Akiyama beside her. Akiyama wore his uniform jacket open over a medical support wrap, left arm covered, posture careful, face pale but less fever-bright than before. He carried nothing because Recovery Girl had apparently forbidden him from carrying anything heavier than self-awareness. Shinso turned his head from the mat.
"Absolutely not" Akiyama looked at him.
"Status?" Shinso remained lying down.
"Humiliated. Sweaty. Alive. Hungry in a legally relevant way" Akiyama nodded.
"Good" Shinso pointed at him from the floor.
"Do not" Recovery Girl looked at Aizawa.
"Medical check complete. He is allowed to observe for ten minutes. Sitting" Akiyama said "I can stand" Everyone ignored him. He sat on the bench near Kurose. Shinso pushed himself upright, which was less graceful than he wanted and more graceful than an hour ago. Akiyama looked at the training strip, the chair, the tape, the mats. Then at Shinso.
"Second answer?" Shinso wiped sweat from his jaw with his sleeve.
"Falling without making it philosophical" Kurose said "Incorrect. He made it extremely philosophical" Aizawa said "But he fell better" Akiyama nodded once.
"Then that" Shinso looked away. The next throw went better because Akiyama was watching. This irritated Shinso because it meant he had wanted a witness. Aizawa saw that too. Of course.
"Your performance improved when observed by a peer" Shinso caught the cloth and glared.
"Do not say peer like that""Like what?"
"Like it means something" Aizawa's eye narrowed.
"It does" Shinso's hand tightened on the cloth. Akiyama watched silently. No rescue. No interpretation. Good. Annoying. Aizawa continued.
"People who only train alone often confuse competence with privacy. Heroes act while watched, misread, recorded, interrupted, and blamed. Learn what observation does to you before the field teaches worse" Shinso looked at Akiyama before he could stop himself. Akiyama's face did not change. But his right hand rested flat against his thigh, fingers open. No tension. No reaching. He had learned something similar by dropping a plastic disk. Shinso hated parallels. Aizawa threw the cloth. Shinso stepped first. Caught.
Clean. Not perfect. Clean enough. Aizawa nodded.
"End" Shinso blinked.
"That's it?"
"Yes""I just got it""Exactly""That is evil""That is training" Recovery Girl said "I approve of stopping before young idiots turn success into injury" Akiyama whispered "Good safety culture" Shinso looked at him.
"You are becoming unbearable" Akiyama's mouth twitched. Safe smile. Small. Shinso noticed because apparently they were all cursed to notice each other's coping mechanisms now. Training ended with reflection sheets. Of course it did. Shinso wrote while sitting on the mat because standing felt like conceding something. Prompt one: When did you want to continue after a stop condition appeared? He wrote: When I caught the cloth cleanly and wanted to prove it was not luck. Prompt two: What did stopping protect?
He wrote: The clean catch from becoming bait. Prompt three: What second answer became visible today? He stared at that one for longer. Akiyama sat on the bench, filling his own observer sheet slowly. Not training. Still paperwork. Because U. A. had apparently discovered that any sufficiently traumatized teenager could be restrained with forms. Shinso looked back at his sheet. Then wrote: Move first. Quirk second. He paused. Added: When they do not answer, I still have to. He hated how true it was.
Kurose collected the sheet. Read the last line. Said nothing. That was worse than praise. Aizawa dismissed him with instructions to stretch, hydrate, eat, and not practice the cloth movement alone in a hallway mirror where he thought no one would see. Shinso closed his mouth on the exact denial he had prepared. Aizawa looked unimpressed.
"Good" Shinso pointed at him.
"That was entrapment""That was prediction" Akiyama said "Pattern recognition" Shinso turned.
"Do not join him" Akiyama lifted his hands slightly.
"Medical neutrality" Recovery Girl snorted.
"No such thing" They left Gym Gamma together. Akiyama walked slowly, and Shinso matched him because walking ahead would be rude, walking behind would feel like escort duty, and walking beside him was unfortunately the least complicated option. Kurose walked ahead with Aizawa. Recovery Girl took a side corridor after ordering both boys to consume food within thirty minutes and to avoid philosophical exertion, a category no one defined because everyone understood it too well.
Outside the training building, the sky had gone gray. Rain began without drama. Akiyama looked up. Shinso looked at the rain. Then at the distance to the gate. He had an umbrella. Technically. It was in his school bag, which he had left in Class 1-C because he had thought the training session would be short and because he remained, despite new evidence, an idiot. Akiyama checked his phone. A message arrived. His face changed in the smallest possible way. Shinso narrowed his eyes.
"What?" Akiyama read aloud.
"Daichi is at the west gate. He says if Shinso is still on campus, there is room in the car. Hana says dinner is normal, not symbolic, and refusal is allowed but must not be based on performative independence" Shinso stared.
"She wrote performative independence?"
"Yes""In a text?"
"Yes""Your mother texts like Kurose with food" Akiyama considered.
"Kurose files like my mother with laws""That is terrifyingly accurate" Akiyama put the phone away.
"You can refuse" Shinso looked at the rain. Then toward the west gate. Then at Akiyama, who looked tired enough that anyone not trained in self-destruction would already be sitting somewhere warm.
"I can get home" Akiyama nodded.
"Yes" That was irritating. He had expected argument. Akiyama did not give one. Shinso shoved his hands into his pockets.
"You are supposed to say the obvious thing" Akiyama looked at him.
"What obvious thing?"
"That can and should are not the same or help is not rescue or some family line designed to make refusal sound inefficient" Akiyama's mouth twitched.
"Daichi would say can and should are relatives, not twins" Shinso closed his eyes.
"I hate that I guessed the genre" Akiyama said nothing. Rain thickened. Shinso opened his eyes.
"Dinner is not symbolic?" Akiyama checked the phone again.
"She specified normal""That makes it more symbolic""Yes""Your family is a trap""Often" Shinso stood in the rain for three more seconds out of principle. Then said "Fine" Akiyama texted one-handed. At the west gate, Daichi waited beside the car with two umbrellas, one large and one smaller. He handed the larger one to Shinso without comment and held the smaller over Ren as if the distribution had been determined by some silent parental algorithm. Shinso looked at the umbrella.
Daichi said "Training looked wet" Shinso said "That sentence means nothing and still sounds like a dad" Daichi considered.
"Thank you?" Akiyama said "He ate breakfast" Shinso looked at him.
"Betrayal" Daichi nodded seriously.
"Good. Hana will ask""Of course she will" They got into the car. The drive was ordinary. That was the problem. Daichi asked about training but did not interrogate. Akiyama gave short answers because fatigue was beginning to pull at the edges of his voice. Shinso reported that Aizawa used a chair as psychological warfare. Daichi said chairs often did that after long shifts. Akiyama said the chair deserved documentation. Shinso said he refused to testify. No one asked about his home.
No one asked whether someone would be waiting. No one asked why dinner at the Akiyama apartment had become easier to accept than going somewhere else. That restraint filled the car louder than questions would have. At the apartment, Hana opened the door before they knocked. She did not look surprised. This was suspicious. She looked at Shinso's wet shoes, Ren's posture, Daichi's damp sleeve, and the umbrella distribution. Then she said "Food is ready. Shoes off. Hands washed.
No one explains emotional growth before eating" Shinso looked at Akiyama.
"Your mother is terrifying" Akiyama said "Yes" Hana said "I hear accurately" Shinso removed his shoes. There was a towel near the entrance. Not an old towel. A clean one. Folded. Waiting. He looked at it for half a second too long. Hana said from the kitchen "That towel is for whoever is wet. It does not have a name" Shinso picked it up.
"Of course not" Akiyama walked past him slowly.
"It had better not have a name" Daichi said "We are not naming towels" Hana called "We named the broken umbrella""That was different. It had history" Shinso stood in the entryway holding the nameless towel and realized he was smiling. Barely. He stopped immediately. Too late. Akiyama had seen. He said nothing. Good. Dinner was not symbolic.
It was rice, grilled fish, soup, vegetables, and a small dish of something pickled that Shinso did not recognize but ate because Hana watched everyone's plate with the authority of a field commander. Ren had a food schedule placed beside his bowl. Shinso stared at it.
"You have meal compliance paperwork at home" Ren looked exhausted.
"Yes" Daichi said "It is laminated" Shinso picked it up.
"Why is it laminated?" Hana set down more rice.
"Because certain people negotiate with paper but not plastic" Ren looked at his bowl.
"I have improved" Hana said "Yes. The lamination remains" Shinso put the schedule down carefully.
"Your Quirk really has lunch rules" Ren looked at him.
"Your future training has breakfast rules" Shinso looked at Hana. She smiled.
"I have already spoken with Kurose""Of course you have" Daichi said "And Recovery Girl" Shinso stared.
"About me?" Hana placed vegetables on his plate.
"About students training after injury, stress, and public evaluation" That sounded general. Too general. General enough not to be a lie. Specific enough to make his throat tighten. Shinso ate the vegetables. No one celebrated. Good. After dinner, Ren looked half-asleep at the table and was ordered to the couch for ten minutes before homework. Shinso expected to be told to leave or offered a ride or politely released back into the world. Instead, Hana placed tea in front of him and sat across from him.
Daichi began washing dishes. Ren lay on the couch with one arm over his eyes, pretending not to listen and absolutely listening. Hana said "You do not have to come here after training" Shinso's shoulders stiffened.
"I know""You can say no""I know""Do you?" He almost laughed. Akiyama family question. Apparently genetic. He looked at the tea.
"Mostly" Hana nodded. Then said "Good enough for tonight" Shinso stared at her.
"That is it?"
"Yes""No hidden lecture?"
"I have many hidden lectures. I am choosing mercy" Daichi said from the sink "For now" Hana ignored him.
"Training with Aizawa will be hard" Shinso looked into the tea.
"Yes""It may bring up things that are not training""Yes""Food will not fix that" He looked up. Hana's face was calm. She continued.
"A ride will not fix that. Dinner will not fix that. A clean towel will not fix that""The towel had no name""It does not need one" Shinso's throat moved. Hana's voice stayed gentle and merciless.
"But hard things are worse when your body is cold, hungry, and alone. We can help with those parts sometimes" Ren's arm did not move from his face. Daichi kept washing dishes. The apartment remained ordinary around the sentence. That made it dangerous. Shinso looked down.
"I am not" The word stuck. He did not know which sentence he had almost started. I am not your responsibility. I am not family. I am not helpless. I am not staying. I am not used to this. All of them were too true and not true enough. Hana waited. Shinso hated that she waited well. Finally he said "I do not know how to answer that" Hana nodded.
"Then do not answer yet" He looked at her. She stood and collected an empty plate from the table.
"After training, if you need a ride and food, ask Ren or text me. If you do not need it, do not. If you need it and cannot ask, Kurose may ask for you once. Not every time. Once" Shinso blinked.
"That is extremely specific" Hana smiled.
"Boundaries are easier when they have shape" Ren murmured from the couch "Kurose language" Hana pointed toward him without looking.
"Resting language" Ren went silent. Shinso looked at the tea again.
"Thank you" Hana paused. Then nodded.
"Accepted" The word did not make him feel less exposed. But it gave the exposure a place to sit. Later, Daichi drove him home. Not to the door. Shinso asked to be dropped at the corner. Daichi did not argue. That mattered too. Before Shinso got out, Daichi handed him the folded umbrella. Shinso stared.
"I can bring it back" Daichi said "That is generally how borrowing works""It is raining less now""It may rain later""You have too many practical answers""Parenting defect" Shinso held the umbrella.
"Thank you" Daichi nodded.
"Painfully means yes, Ren says sometimes" Shinso looked at him.
"What?" Daichi's mouth twitched.
"When something is difficult but still wanted. Painfully means yes" Shinso looked away. Then said "This was painfully yes" Daichi did not make the moment larger.
"Good" Shinso got out. He walked the rest of the way with the umbrella closed in one hand because the rain had softened to mist, but he did not leave it in the car. At home, he set it near the door, not because it meant anything, obviously, but because borrowed things needed visible places if they were going to be returned. He took the folded paper from his pocket before bed. Spite can start movement. It cannot sustain a career. He placed it inside his notebook. Then he opened to a new page.
First answer: Make them speak. He stopped. Crossed out make. Wrote: First answer: If they answer, use the opening. Second answer: If they do not answer, move. He tapped the pen against the page. Then added one more line. Hard things are worse hungry. He stared at that. Terrible sentence. Embarrassing. Accurate. He did not cross it out. Outside, rain tapped lightly against the window.
Inside, Shinso Hitoshi looked at the borrowed umbrella by the door, the folded note in his notebook, the ache in his legs from falling correctly, and the shape of a hallway that had not become home but had, annoyingly, begun to have landmarks. A chair. A strip of cloth. A clean towel with no name. A rice bowl filled without interrogation. A corner where he could be dropped off without someone demanding the address of everything wrong. When they did not answer, he still had to.
When they offered, he did not always have to run. Both were going to be problems. He turned off the light. For once, the dark did not feel like proof of anything. It was just dark. That was almost restful.
