The transfer candidate briefing took place in Room 2-G, which Ren Akiyama immediately identified as a deliberate choice. It was not a Hero Course classroom. It was not one of the training rooms. It was not an auditorium. It was a mid-sized academic room with movable desks, a whiteboard, reinforced windows, and no decorations beyond a faded emergency procedure poster that had probably existed before USJ and now looked like it had gained moral authority through timing. Neutral territory. Limited symbolism.
Good sightlines. Only one main entrance, one faculty side door, and a narrow storage closet that did not count as an exit unless someone was desperate or very small. Ren stopped cataloging at the storage closet. Mostly. Shinso stood beside him in the doorway, hands in pockets, hair aggressively uncooperative, blue envelope not visible but likely in his bag.
"You're doing the room thing again" Shinso said Ren looked at him.
"The room thing?"
"Counting exits like architecture insulted you""It often does" Shinso looked past him into the classroom.
"Two doors, bad windows, one closet, enough desks to make people think this is academic instead of competitive" Ren blinked. Shinso's mouth twitched.
"What? You're not the only one with eyes""That was adequately observed""Try not to sound surprised""I failed""Clearly" They entered. The room already held twelve students from General Studies, three from Support who had applied for cross-department evaluation pathways, and two Business Course students who looked less like athletes and more like people who intended to turn visibility itself into a weapon. Kenta sat near the middle with Sano beside him, one leg stretched carefully under the desk.
Arai sat near the wall where sound reached her unevenly. Miyazaki had a notebook open and a pen already in hand. Yabara had drawn a cartoon of the Sports Festival stadium eating students and was pretending it was not his coping strategy. Kurose stood at the front. No Present Mic. No Nezu. No Hero Course teacher. No dramatic faculty panel. Just Kurose, a tablet, and a stack of printed packets that looked thin enough to be dangerous.
Ren took a seat near the side aisle because his ribs disliked desks that required twisting. Shinso took the seat behind him instead of beside him, which meant either he wanted distance or an angle to make comments without being seen. Possibly both. Kurose waited until the last student entered. Then she closed the door.
"Good morning" The answer came with more tension than volume.
"Good morning, Kurose-sensei" She looked over them.
"This briefing concerns Sports Festival participation as it relates to course transfer consideration. It is not a promise of transfer. It is not an encouragement to injure yourselves publicly. It is not a secret Hero Course entrance exam. It is not a consolation prize after USJ. It is not a revenge opportunity against students who placed above you" Kenta lowered his hand before raising it fully. Kurose looked at him.
"Good choice" He put it down. She began distributing packets. Ren accepted his copy. Title: Sports Festival Evaluation and Internal Course Transfer Consideration — Provisional Candidate Briefing Below it: Visibility is not admission. Performance is not entitlement. Evaluation is holistic. Ren stared at the second sentence. Shinso leaned forward slightly behind him.
"Holistic means they can say no in more ways" Ren did not turn.
"Correct" Kurose's eyes moved toward them. They stopped talking. Mostly. Kurose returned to the front.
"Read the first page later. I will summarize because some of you are currently too nervous to process written policy accurately" Yabara muttered "That feels personal""It is plural""Still personal""Yes" She wrote five words on the board. Performance. Judgment. Control. Recovery. Fit. Then she turned.
"These are the categories that may affect transfer consideration. Performance is the one most of you will overvalue. Judgment is the one many of you will forget under pressure. Control includes Quirk control, emotional control, and situational control. Recovery includes medical compliance and post-USJ support compliance. Fit concerns whether the Hero Course environment is appropriate for you and whether you would contribute to it safely" Sano leaned back.
"So being strong is not enough""No""Being clever?"
"No""Being heroic?" Kurose's face did not change.
"Define heroic" No one answered immediately. Good. Dangerous word. Ren looked at the board. Performance. Judgment. Control. Recovery. Fit. The categories were too broad to game cleanly. Nezu had probably approved them. Kurose continued "There may be limited Hero Course seats available after the Sports Festival. There may be none. Transfers are not guaranteed by ranking, public attention, agency interest, or one impressive moment. A student who wins an event and demonstrates unsafe judgment may still be rejected.
A student who loses early and demonstrates outstanding judgment may still receive further evaluation" The room shifted. Hope and frustration moved together. Shinso's voice came from behind Ren, low enough that only he probably heard.
"That sentence exists because of you" Ren answered just as softly.
"Possibly us" Shinso went quiet. Kurose's gaze flicked toward them again. Terrifying. She tapped the board under Recovery"Post-USJ students must meet additional clearance requirements. If your body or mind cannot safely participate, you will not participate. That is not punishment. That is adulthood happening around you whether you like it or not" Kenta frowned.
"What if we disagree?"
"Then you may disagree while not participating" Brutal. Efficient. Kenta sat back. Miyazaki raised a hand.
"If we don't participate, does that hurt transfer chances?"
"Yes" The room tightened. Kurose held up one hand.
"And no. Refusing unsafe participation will not be held against you. But performance cannot be evaluated if performance does not occur. Other categories can still be assessed. Academic record, faculty recommendations, prior incident reports, controlled evaluations, future transfer windows. The Sports Festival is a major opportunity. It is not the last door in existence" Ren wrote that down. Not the policy. The phrasing. Not the last door in existence. Shinso leaned forward again.
"Writing therapy now?" Ren said "Door classification""That is worse" Kurose said "Akiyama. Shinso" They went still.
"Would either of you like to provide commentary to the room?" Shinso said "No, sensei" Ren said "No, sensei""Good" The word punished them both. Kurose continued.
"USJ records may be considered as part of broader assessment. They do not create automatic priority. A student's emergency action under attack is relevant. It is not a substitute for the ability to train, cooperate, follow instruction, and function under regulated conditions" Her eyes touched Shinso for half a second. Then Ren. Neither looked away.
"Some of you received documentation that your actions were useful during USJ. That matters. Do not turn that documentation into a weapon against yourself" Shinso's face closed. Ren's fingers tightened around his pencil. Arai whispered something to herself that sounded like "against yourself" Kurose heard, but did not interrupt. She flipped to the next slide on the classroom monitor. Sports Festival Preparation Rules Ren saw the list and felt immediate resentment. No unsupervised combat practice.
No unauthorized Quirk testing. No provocation exercises without consent and faculty approval. No training through medical restriction. No exploiting classmates' trauma responses. No strategy sessions that become physical drills without clearance. No public challenge statements. No media baiting. No betting, ranking, or social pressure around transfer candidates. Yabara raised his hand.
"What counts as public challenge statements?" Kurose looked at him.
"If it sounds like something a future disciplinary report could quote dramatically, do not say it" Sano muttered "That removes half the fun""Good" Ren glanced back at Shinso. Shinso looked bored. He was not. The briefing continued for forty minutes. Questions came slowly at first, then faster. Could Support Course candidates be considered for Hero Course if their Quirk was not combat-oriented? Yes, but fit and safety mattered.
Could Business Course students transfer if they demonstrated public strategy and rescue leadership? Rare, but not impossible. Would agency scouts affect internal transfer? Not directly, though agency interest could prompt faculty review. Would General Studies students compete against Hero Course in the same events? Yes. Would accommodations be available for medical restrictions? Safety accommodations, yes. Competitive advantages, no. Would USJ survivors be exempt? If medically or psychologically necessary, yes.
Automatically, no. Would first-year rankings be public? Some rankings, yes. Detailed internal evaluation, no. Would the media know who was transfer candidate? Officially, no. Unofficially, probably. Kurose did not say probably. Her face did. At the end, she placed both hands on the front desk.
"You are allowed to want this" The room went still. That sentence seemed to surprise more people than the restrictions had. Kurose looked at them one by one.
"You are allowed to want visibility. Recognition. Hero Course consideration. A different path. You are allowed to be angry that the entrance exam did not measure you well. You are allowed to resent students who received the chance you wanted. You are allowed to be excited. You are allowed to be afraid. You are allowed to compete" Her voice hardened.
"You are not allowed to let wanting become an excuse for cruelty, self-destruction, or stupidity" Ren looked down at the packet. Allowed to want this. That was not a sentence he had expected. Shinso's chair creaked behind him. Kurose said "Dismissed. Akiyama, remain seated. Shinso, you too" Sano turned around.
"Oh, you're in trouble" Kurose looked at him. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"Sano, do you want to remain seated too?"
"No, sensei""Excellent survival instinct" Kenta grinned and pulled Sano toward the door. Arai passed Ren quietly and said "Good luck" Ren was not sure whether she meant the meeting or the entire future. Both, probably. Soon the room emptied. Kurose closed the door again. Ren stayed seated. Shinso did not move from behind him. Kurose looked at both.
"Medical and support notes" Ren said "Expected" Shinso said "That sounds ominous""It is administrative""Same thing" Kurose ignored that.
"Akiyama. Your participation depends on continued compliance. Recovery Girl's report today was cautiously positive" Ren tried not to react to positive. Failed partially. Kurose noticed. Of course.
"Do not become pleased enough to do something foolish""I am not pleased""You are pleased in a very controlled and irritating way" Shinso said "Accurate" Ren turned slightly.
"Unnecessary""Still accurate" Kurose continued "If cleared, your permitted preparation will focus on rules analysis, movement economy within medical limits, breathing, route planning without physical rehearsal, and decision protocols. No impact. No exposure. No tests" Ren nodded.
"Yes, sensei" She studied him.
"You answered too quickly""I am attempting compliance""That is often where loopholes begin" Shinso leaned back.
"She knows you so well" Ren looked forward. Kurose turned to Shinso.
"Shinso. Your preparation may include verbal strategy, consent-based response drills, breath control, footwork if supervised, general conditioning if cleared, and Quirk ethics review. You will not practice Brainwashing on unwilling students. You will not provoke trauma responses to create openings. You will not use cafeteria interactions as experimental data" Shinso opened his mouth. Kurose raised an eyebrow. He closed it.
Then said "Yes, sensei""Good" Ren felt Shinso's glare land on the back of his head for enjoying that. He did not enjoy it. Much. Kurose placed two additional sheets on Ren's desk.
"Joint strategic review is permitted for you both under conditions" Ren looked at the sheet. Shinso leaned forward.
"Joint?" Kurose said "You are both transfer candidates. You observe different things. You irritate each other into clarity. That can be useful if managed" Shinso said "That is the worst compliment I've ever received""It was not a compliment" Ren read the sheet. Thirty-minute sessions maximum. No physical demonstration. No Quirk use. No opponent-specific harassment. No secret recordings. No strategy targeting classmates' trauma. No post-USJ incident detail sharing beyond already cleared information.
At least one adult aware of time and location. Ren looked up.
"This is restrictive""Yes""Useful""Yes" Shinso took the sheet.
"Adult aware means Kurose?"
"Or parent or approved faculty" Ren's phone buzzed. Hana. How is the briefing? Did you eat snack? Do not forget breathing. Also ask Shinso if he has dinner plans. Practical question. No pressure. Ren stared. Shinso looked at him.
"What?" Ren put the phone face down.
"Nothing" Kurose looked between them.
"Akiyama""It is unrelated""Rarely true" Shinso reached for the phone. Ren moved it out of reach.
"Privacy" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"That means it's about me""No" Kurose's expression shifted in a way Ren disliked.
"Is Mrs. Akiyama asking a practical question?" Ren closed his eyes. Shinso said "What practical question?" Ren looked at Kurose. Betrayal had many faces. This one wore faculty authority. Kurose said "You may answer or not. But do not turn an invitation into a strategic ambush" Shinso went very still. Ren opened his eyes.
"It is not an invitation" Shinso's face flattened.
"To what?" Ren looked at his phone. Then at Shinso. Then at Kurose, who was watching too carefully.
"Hana asks whether you have dinner plans" Silence. Shinso blinked once.
"That is not a question people ask casually""It says practical question. No pressure""That makes it worse" Kurose said "It may be practical. It may also be care. Those are not mutually exclusive" Shinso looked at her.
"You're enjoying this""No. I am monitoring whether two emotionally defensive students can handle a dinner invitation without turning it into a military incident" Ren said "It was not an invitation" Kurose looked at him. Ren adjusted.
"Not yet" Shinso leaned back, eyes on the ceiling.
"Unbelievable" Ren said "You can refuse""I know""You do not have to give reason""I know""It may be because of the briefing. Or transport. Or food. Or weather" Shinso looked at him.
"You are making it sound like homework" Ren stopped. Daichi's voice appeared in memory. That is exactly the kind of thing that makes care look like homework. Kurose's mouth tightened in a way that suggested she had reached the same conclusion. Ren exhaled.
"Hana is asking because she wants to feed you" Shinso looked away. There. Too direct. Better. Harder. Kurose did not rescue him. Ren continued "No strategy session required. No gratitude performance required. No adoption paperwork. Daichi is forbidden from jokes. You can leave after dinner" Shinso's jaw worked.
"You rehearsed that?"
"Parts""Of course you did""Poorly""Yes" Kurose said "That was better than the first attempt" Ren chose not to be insulted. Shinso looked at the sheet in his hand. Joint strategic review permitted. Adult aware. Parent. Dinner. Care disguised as rice. No. Care not disguised enough. He said "I have placement dinner" Ren nodded.
"Okay" The word should have ended it. Kurose observed both of them. Shinso's fingers tightened on the paper.
"It's usually bad" Ren did not move. Kurose did not move. Shinso looked irritated at his own mouth.
"I mean. Not bad. Just. It exists" Ren said "Dinner can exist elsewhere" Shinso glared.
"You make everything sound like a case file""Yes" A long silence. Then Shinso said "If it's not inconvenient" Ren heard Hana's future response before she said it. No, actually, because Hana would not say not inconvenient. She would say dinner is already being made. He typed: He says if not inconvenient. Hana replied in less than ten seconds. Dinner is already being made. He is welcome. No pressure. Daichi will not joke.
Tell him there is rice, miso soup, grilled chicken, vegetables, and no interrogation during first serving. Ren showed Shinso. Shinso read. His expression did something complicated at no interrogation during first serving Kurose read too because privacy had apparently died during USJ.
"That is a well-structured invitation" she said Shinso muttered "Of course it is" He looked at Ren.
"Fine" Ren nodded.
"I will inform her""You already did""Acceptance requires confirmation""You're impossible""Yes" Kurose dismissed them after confirming transport authorization, contact information, and the fact that Ren was not allowed to turn dinner into an unsupervised transfer planning meeting. Shinso looked personally betrayed by the bureaucracy. Ren found it reassuring. The rest of the school day passed with Sports Festival pressure under every surface. Posters appeared in the main corridor before lunch ended.
Not full banners yet. Preliminary notices. Dates. Security updates. Participant registration reminders. Faculty office hours. Medical clearance deadlines. The building changed as paper accumulated. Public reassurance became decoration. At lunch, Shinso sat across from Ren and looked like he regretted every life choice that had led to dinner. Kenta noticed immediately.
"What happened to your face?" Shinso said "It's always like this""No, this is new doom" Sano leaned in.
"Transfer briefing broke him" Arai looked at Shinso.
"Something happened" Shinso glared.
"Do you all have trauma senses now?" Arai said "Maybe" Ren said "Hana invited him to dinner" The table froze. Shinso turned slowly.
"Betrayal" Kenta's eyes went wide.
"Akiyama dinner?" Sano whispered "Domestic escalation" Nana smiled before hiding it behind both hands. Reina looked openly delighted. Arai's expression softened. Fujimura said "That sounds nice" Shinso pointed at all of them.
"Do not make it a thing" Kenta said "Too late""It is not a thing" Sano nodded gravely.
"Not-a-thing dinner" Ren said "It is dinner" Shinso looked at him.
"Stop helping""I was clarifying""You made it worse" Kenta leaned forward.
"What's the dress code for not-a-thing dinner?" Shinso's face went blank. Kenta immediately regretted existing. Ren said "Uniform is fine" Shinso said "I knew that""Good" Sano grinned.
"There's the word" Arai quietly said "Good" The whole table laughed then. Not loudly. Enough. Shinso looked furious. Also less like he would flee. That seemed like a successful outcome by 1-C standards. After school, Ren underwent a medical check because Recovery Girl had decided that participating in a briefing counted as potentially provocative. His ribs remained stable. His forearm healed predictably. Scar quiet. No fever. Sleep inadequate but improved. Compliance acceptable. Recovery Girl stared at him.
"You are doing better when frightened by consequences" Ren said "That seems plausible""Work on doing better because you value your body""That is more difficult""At least you know" She signed the limited clearance allowing dinner outside the placement context for Shinso only after Kurose sent authorization, and only after confirming with Ren's parents that dinner would not become a training session, Quirk discussion, or emotional interrogation disguised as dessert.
Hana's reply came printed in Recovery Girl's tablet somehow. Dinner comes first. Recovery Girl approved. Possibly on principle. Shinso met Ren at the east entrance. He had changed nothing about himself except that his hair looked as if he had attempted to flatten it and lost. Ren did not comment. Mercy. Progress. Daichi's car arrived exactly on time. Shinso looked at the vehicle.
"Your father is punctual""Yes""That's suspicious""He labels umbrellas""Also suspicious" They got into the car. Shinso took the front seat after half a second of hesitation. Ren sat in the back because ribs and because the seating had already become a pattern no one needed to name. Daichi looked at Shinso.
"Good evening" Shinso watched him carefully.
"Good evening" Daichi looked like he was about to say something. Then stopped. Ren noticed the effort. Shinso noticed too. Daichi said "Dinner comes first" Ren closed his eyes. Hana had trained him. Shinso stared at the dashboard.
"Okay" The drive was quiet. Not empty. Quiet. Shinso watched the roads. Ren watched Shinso watching the roads. Daichi drove toward the Akiyama apartment through post-school traffic, avoiding the main media routes near U. A. without commenting on it. When they reached the building, Shinso stepped out slowly. He looked up at the apartment complex. Not fancy. Not poor. Ordinary. Ordinary seemed to unsettle him more than spectacle. Ren stood beside him.
"You can leave at any time" Shinso looked at him.
"Do you say that to everyone who comes over?"
"No""Great""I say it because""I know why" Ren stopped. Good. They went up. Hana opened the door before Ren could unlock it. Not because she had been waiting. Probably. She wore a simple apron over home clothes, hair tied back, face calm in the way that meant effort had been applied.
"Welcome, Shinso" Shinso stood in the doorway.
"Thank you for having me" The sentence sounded practiced. Hana accepted it without drawing attention.
"Shoes there. Bathroom to the left if you want to wash your hands. Dinner is almost ready. No interrogation during first serving" Shinso looked at her. Then at Ren.
"You weren't lying" Ren removed his shoes carefully.
"No" Hana said "He often sounds like lying when he is being precise" Ren looked at her.
"Family betrayal remains high""It is dinner. Betrayal comes after vegetables" Shinso made a sound that might have been almost a laugh. Almost. He removed his shoes and placed them too neatly by the door, as if trying to take up less space through alignment. Hana noticed. Did not comment. Daichi placed a pair of guest slippers near him without fanfare.
"They might be too large" Shinso looked at them. Then slipped them on.
"They're fine" They were slightly too large. No one corrected him. The apartment smelled like rice, miso, grilled chicken, ginger, and something warm beneath it that Ren had never successfully named because it was not a single ingredient. It was probably home. He disliked sentimental inaccuracy. Still. The smell existed. Shinso stood near the hallway, bag held by one strap. Hana pointed gently toward a chair.
"You can put that there" Shinso looked at the chair. Then put his bag down carefully. As if chairs for bags had rules. Maybe they did in some places. Ren did not ask. Dinner was set at the table, not served buffet-style. Hana had chosen food that could be taken without performance: rice, soup, chicken, vegetables, pickles, fruit waiting for later. Nothing too elaborate. Nothing that screamed special occasion. That was almost certainly deliberate. Shinso sat across from Ren. Daichi sat beside Hana.
Hana began serving without asking too many questions. Rice first. Soup. Chicken. Vegetables.
"Tell me if the portion is too much or too little" she said Shinso looked at the plate.
"It's fine" Hana paused.
"Fine means acceptable or fine means you do not want to answer?" Shinso stared. Ren looked down. Daichi hid a smile badly. Shinso said "Acceptable" Hana nodded.
"Good" Ren whispered "Contagion" Shinso kicked him lightly under the table. Ren's ribs were safe. Therefore permitted. Probably. They ate. For the first several minutes, Hana kept her promise. No interrogation. She asked only practical questions. Water? More rice? Any allergies she should know for next time? Shinso stopped with his chopsticks halfway to his mouth. Next time had appeared without warning. Hana did not look at him too sharply. Shinso looked at his plate.
"No allergies""Good to know" He resumed eating. Daichi asked whether the station entrance had been quieter yesterday. Shinso said yes. Daichi said he had checked a route with less foot traffic if U. A. transport failed again. Shinso looked at him.
"You checked?" Daichi nodded.
"Practical" The word landed differently from Ren's mouth. Less like report. More like offering. Shinso looked down.
"Thanks""You're welcome" Dinner continued. Ren ate more slowly than usual because Recovery Girl had made rib pain everyone's business. Hana noticed every breath he tried to hide. Shinso noticed Hana noticing. That created a strange triangulation of surveillance that Ren disliked.
"You can stop watching me eat" Ren said Shinso blinked.
"I wasn't""You were observing Hana observing me" Daichi nodded.
"He does that too" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Does your family always narrate everyone's habits?" Hana said "Only the obvious ones" Ren said "Yes" Daichi said "Frequently" Shinso looked between them.
"This explains you" Ren pointed his chopsticks at him.
"You are a guest""So I have immunity?"
"No" Hana said "During first serving, yes" Shinso's mouth twitched. The first serving ended. Hana refilled soup. Shinso watched the bowl. Then said "Is interrogation allowed now?" Hana sat back.
"Yes, but not required""That sounds worse""Then we can start with you asking us something" That was an ambush disguised as fairness. Ren respected it. Shinso looked at her suspiciously.
"What do you want me to ask?"
"Whatever you actually want to know" He looked around the apartment. At the organized shelves. The labeled storage box near the kitchen. The family photos that were not arranged for visitors. Ren at ten with a bandaged elbow and a face that already looked too serious. Daichi and Hana at some park, younger, laughing at something outside the frame. A school certificate. A half-visible stack of notebooks on a side shelf. A home that had made room for Ren's systems without becoming only his systems.
Shinso looked back at Hana.
"Why?" There it was. Small word. Large room. Hana did not pretend not to understand.
"Because you were alone too often after USJ" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"I wasn't helpless""No""I didn't ask for""I know""I can feed myself""Yes""I have a place to sleep""Yes""It's not" He stopped. The table was very quiet. Hana's voice stayed calm.
"Not all help is rescue" Shinso looked at her. Hana continued "Some help is just making sure dinner exists somewhere with your name attached to a chair" Ren looked at the table. Daichi did too. Shinso's face had gone too still. Ren recognized that kind of stillness now. Not empty. Overfull. Shinso looked down at the bowl.
"My name is not attached to a chair" Hana nodded.
"No. Not literally" Daichi said "I would have labeled it if advised" Ren closed his eyes.
"Hana forbade jokes" Daichi looked stricken.
"That was not a joke. That was logistical truth" Shinso stared at him. Then, unexpectedly, he laughed. Not much. Not loudly. But unmistakably. It broke the pressure like a small window opening. Hana smiled. Ren looked at Daichi. Daichi looked both relieved and proud. Dangerous combination. Shinso shook his head.
"You people are unbelievable" Hana said "Often" The conversation shifted after that. Not easy. Easier. Daichi asked about the transfer briefing, but not whether Shinso thought he would win. Instead, he asked what category seemed least fair. Shinso answered after a moment.
"Fit" Daichi nodded.
"Because it lets them judge whether someone belongs""Yes" Ren looked at him.
"That category worries me too" Shinso's eyes flicked toward him.
"For different reasons""Yes" Hana looked between them.
"What reasons?" Ren answered first.
"Fit can become a cleaner word for preference" Shinso continued "Or fear" Daichi nodded slowly.
"Then what makes it useful?" Ren considered.
"If applied honestly, it asks whether the environment can support the student and whether the student can function without harming themselves or others" Shinso looked at him.
"You rehearsed that""No""You sound like you did""I think in complete sentences""Tragic" Hana looked at Shinso.
"And you?" He looked at her.
"What makes fit useful?" The question seemed to irritate him because he had not expected to answer it.
"Context" Ren's eyes sharpened. Shinso noticed.
"Don't" Ren said nothing. Shinso continued anyway.
"A Quirk that sounds wrong in one context is useful in another. A person who doesn't fit one exam might fit a rescue situation. Or a hostage situation. Or a crowd. Or whatever the Festival throws at us" Hana nodded.
"So fit should include where someone fits, not just whether they fit" Shinso stared. Then looked away.
"Yeah" Ren said "That is good framing" Shinso glared.
"I said don't""You said don't before the useful part""Technicality""Correct" Dinner moved into Sports Festival without becoming a strategy session because Hana enforced the distinction with vegetables. They discussed categories. Not opponents. They discussed pressure. Not tactics. They discussed crowd noise, media exposure, medical clearance, and the fact that General Studies students might have to work twice as hard for half as much assumption of competence. Shinso did not say that was unfair. He did not need to.
Ren did not say he had built years around unfair. He did not need to. At one point, Hana looked at both of them.
"If there is one seat" The table went still. Shinso's eyes moved to Ren. Ren met them. Hana continued "You will both want it""Yes" Shinso said"Yes" Ren said"And if one of you gets it?" Silence. Daichi did not interfere. Hana waited. Ren answered first.
"Then the other continues" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"That is easy to say now""Yes""You might hate me""I might resent you" Shinso looked surprised by the honesty. Ren continued "I am trying not to confuse resentment with truth" Hana's expression softened painfully. Shinso looked down.
"I might resent you too""Expected""That doesn't mean I'll go easy""Good" Hana said "No going easy at dinner either. More vegetables" Shinso looked betrayed as she placed more on his plate.
"That was not the emotional conclusion I expected" Hana said "Dinner comes first" Ren almost smiled. The phrase had become law. After dinner, Shinso helped clear the table. Hana did not stop him. That was smart. Guests could be trapped by being served too much. Work, small and practical, let a person exist without being displayed. Ren remained seated because his ribs made twisting with plates a poor idea and because Hana's look had removed the possibility of argument. Shinso carried bowls to the sink.
Daichi rinsed. Hana packed leftovers with frightening efficiency. Ren watched as she placed one container aside. Shinso saw it too.
"No" Hana did not look up.
"Yes""I ate dinner""Correct. This is future dinner""I have food""Then this is backup food""I can't keep taking food" Hana closed the container.
"You can decide each time" Shinso stopped. The answer trapped him differently. Not always. Today. This container. This choice. He looked at Ren as if Ren had orchestrated the entire structure of conditional acceptance. Ren raised one hand slightly.
"I am medically seated""Useless""Currently by design" Daichi handed Shinso a small insulated bag.
"Food stays better in this" Shinso stared at the bag. It had no label. Daichi saw him notice.
"I resisted" Shinso looked at him.
"That took effort?"
"Yes" Shinso took the bag.
"Thanks""You're welcome" Hana added a note on top of the container. Ren could not see it. Shinso could. His face changed.
"What does it say?" Ren asked Shinso folded it immediately.
"Nothing" Hana looked innocent. Daichi looked too innocent. Suspicious. Later, at the door, Shinso put on his shoes while Ren stood nearby with one hand against the wall. Daichi had offered to drive him to the station. Shinso had accepted after only three defensive statements, which was progress by any reasonable standard. Hana stood by the entrance.
"Message when you arrive" Shinso said "Fine""Thank you for coming" He looked at her. Then at Daichi. Then at Ren. The apartment behind them was warm, lit, ordinary, and not trying to become a story out loud. That was why it had become one anyway.
"Thanks for dinner" Hana said "You're welcome" Daichi lifted the car keys.
"Ready?" Shinso nodded. Ren watched them leave. For a moment, the apartment felt quieter in a new way. Not empty. Adjusted. Hana stood beside him.
"Does it bother you?" The question again. Ren looked at the door. This time, the answer had changed shape.
"Yes" Hana went still. Ren continued before hurt could form.
"Not in the way that means stop" She exhaled. Daichi was gone, so no one filled the silence badly. Ren tried to find the correct structure.
"It bothers me because it matters. Because I can see him trying not to need it. Because I understand that. Because part of me wants him to accept it and part of me thinks accepting care makes a person easier to hurt. Because you are good at finding places people are hungry and I do not know how many people can fit at the table before it changes" Hana's eyes shone. Ren looked away.
"That was too much""No""It was inefficient""No""It was" Hana touched his arm gently.
"Tables are supposed to change when people sit at them" He looked at her. She smiled, small and sad and warm.
"That is why we have extra chairs" Ren looked toward the table. Four chairs. One had been Shinso's tonight. Not labeled. Not promised. Used. That was enough to feel dangerous. Maybe enough to feel good. Both. Daichi returned twenty minutes later.
"Delivered to station. He entered before I left" Hana nodded.
"Good" Ren said "Did he say anything?" Daichi removed his shoes.
"He said your family is a lot" Ren considered.
"Accurate""He also said dinner was acceptable" Hana smiled.
"High praise" Daichi pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
"He left this in the car. On purpose, I think" Hana took it. Ren looked. It was the note from the leftover container. Hana unfolded it. Ren read from beside her. Backup food. No dramatic meaning required. Under it, in Shinso's handwriting: Dramatic handwriting for no dramatic meaning. Acceptable food. Ren stared. Hana laughed quietly. Daichi smiled. Ren took the note when Hana offered it. Shinso had left it behind instead of taking it. A complaint. A thank you. A refusal to be too grateful.
A way to answer without standing in the doorway and bleeding emotion on the floor. Practical. Ren understood. He took out his phone. Arrived? Shinso replied: Yes. A second later: Tell your mother the food was acceptable. Ren typed: She knows. You left evidence. Long pause. Then: Traitor car. Ren: Daichi says the car is neutral. Shinso: Daichi would. Another pause. Then: Thanks. Ren looked at the word. Short. Unadorned. No acceptable. No practical. No deflection. He typed: Dinner comes first. Shinso: Unfortunately.
Ren almost smiled. Carefully. That night, during his allowed notebook time, Ren did not write a strategy from the transfer briefing first. He wrote: Shinso came to dinner. He asked why. Hana said not all help is rescue. Daichi did not label the chair. This showed restraint. Fit can mean where someone fits, not only whether. If there is one seat, one of us may resent the other. This is not the same as betrayal. Tables change when people sit at them. Extra chairs exist. He stared at the last line. Too simple. Again.
Maybe simple sentences were traps because they left nowhere to hide. He added: Dinner was not preparation. Dinner was dinner. This may be preparation anyway. He closed the notebook. Outside the window, the city continued toward the Sports Festival, toward cameras and crowds and rankings and the vast public machinery waiting to turn students into reassurance. Inside the apartment, one chair had been used by someone who did not belong there yet and had not been asked to belong before eating.
Ren lay down on time because compliance still mattered. His ribs hurt less. His scar stayed quiet. His phone stayed within reach. For once, the future did not arrive as ice, crowd noise, or pressure. It arrived as a leftover container in an insulated bag, a chair not labeled but remembered, and a boy who called food acceptable because anything warmer might have cost too much to say. Dinner came first. Maybe that was not strategy. Maybe that was why it worked.
