Chương 26: Surivial Is not Certification

Survival Is Not Certification U. A. reopened its ordinary doors before anyone inside it felt ordinary enough to use them. Ren Akiyama noticed that at the gate. The physical structure had not changed. High walls, clean lines, reinforced entrances, polished signage, professional landscaping designed to suggest that the most dangerous hero school in Japan was also the safest place a child could learn to become useful. The main path still cut toward the school buildings with almost arrogant symmetry.
The morning light still struck the glass panels in a way that made everything look expensive, controlled, and inevitable. But the gate was different. Not visibly, perhaps. Not to someone who had never entered before USJ. To Ren, every added security measure had a shape. Two extra guards near the student entrance. One plainclothes officer pretending not to be security beside the outer path. Temporary scanner arch set slightly left of the original entry flow to avoid bottleneck panic.
Faculty presence distributed across sightlines instead of clustered. Support staff wearing earpieces they had not worn before. Cameras angled lower. Students moving through in smaller groups, checked faster but watched more carefully. U. A. had not rebuilt the gate. It had taught the gate fear. Ren stood outside the car with his bag on his right shoulder, left arm no longer in a sling but still bandaged under his blazer, ribs wrapped beneath his shirt, cheek nearly healed, scar quiet under gauze.
Hana had spent twelve minutes arguing that the sling should remain. Recovery Girl had said he could go without it if he avoided carrying weight, raising his arm too fast, sudden turns, defensive movements, training, running, climbing, or "whatever nonsense he calls necessary movement" Daichi had written that down. Ren suspected he had enjoyed it. Hana stood in front of him now, smoothing a wrinkle on his uniform lapel that did not exist.
"Pain level""Ribs four. Arm two. Shoulder three. General fatigue manageable""Breathing?"
"Stable""Dizziness?"
"No""Medication?"
"Taken""Snack?"
"In bag""Water?"
"In bag""Emergency contact protocol?"
"Call you, call Daichi, tell Kurose, tell medical staff if symptoms change" Hana's hands stopped on his lapel.
"And if something happens?" Ren looked past her shoulder at the gate. Students were entering under watchful eyes. Some laughed too loudly. Some did not speak. Several parents remained longer than usual after drop-off, pretending not to hover. A boy from the Support Course hugged his mother with the stiff embarrassment of someone who had probably not done that at a school gate for years.
"If something happens" Ren said "I move toward adults unless immediate life-threatening circumstances make that impossible" Hana watched his face.
"No careful loopholes" He met her eyes.
"No careful loopholes" Daichi came around from the driver's side and handed Ren a small folded paper. Ren looked at it.
"What is this?"
"Your restrictions""I know my restrictions""Yes. This is for anyone you try to argue with" Ren unfolded it. It was handwritten. Not by Hana. By Daichi. Ren Akiyama — current restrictions after USJ: no running, no training, no lifting, no unsupervised exertion, no combat practice, no independent incident analysis during school hours, no "just checking" dangerous areas, no carrying other students, no climbing, no sudden heroics, no hiding symptoms. Ren stared.
"No sudden heroics is not medically precise" Daichi nodded.
"I added that one" Hana looked pleased. Ren looked between them.
"This is reputationally damaging""Good" Hana said"That is not how reputation should work" Daichi touched his shoulder gently.
"Alive first" Ren folded the paper and put it in his bag. The words still worked. Annoying. Useful. Hana stepped closer. For a second, Ren thought she would hug him. She did not. Not because she did not want to. Because the gate was full of students, cameras were not supposed to reach but might, and because his ribs still made sudden pressure difficult. Instead, she placed her hand lightly against the side of his face, just below the healing cut.
"Come back with the same number of injuries or fewer""That is mathematically restrictive""Good" Ren sighed. Daichi opened his mouth. Ren pointed at him.
"No" Daichi smiled.
"Good" The word had become a family disease. Ren turned before they could make it worse. The first step through the gate felt like stepping into a memory while it was still wet. U. A. accepted him. Scanned him. Checked his bag. Logged his entry. Let him pass. The school did not apologize. Buildings rarely did. On the main path, students moved in streams that pretended to be normal. Hero Course uniforms stood out even when their wearers tried to shrink.
Support Course students carried equipment cases as if weight could disguise nerves. Business Course students already looked like they were watching market reactions, media exposure, and institutional messaging with the grim excitement of people who had discovered that tragedy had deliverables. General Studies walked differently. Ren noticed that too. Before USJ, General Studies had moved through U. A. with a particular kind of practiced noncentrality.
They knew they were inside the best hero school in Japan while not belonging to the part everyone watched. Some resented it loudly. Some ignored it. Some treated it as a stepping stone. Some treated it as an excellent education attached to an unavoidable hierarchy. Now they moved like people who had been inside the event and had not been written into the headline. Not invisible. Not visible. Something stranger.
Ren saw Kenta near the entrance to the academic building, rolling one shoulder carefully as he argued with Sano about whether knee braces looked more embarrassing if worn over or under the uniform trousers. Sano noticed Ren first.
"You're alive""Yes""Still text like a medical receipt?"
"Yes" Kenta turned. His face changed for half a second before he covered it with irritation.
"You're walking too stiff""Rib trauma""I know. I was there when you made terrible choices with it" Ren adjusted the strap on his shoulder.
"I made several effective choices" Kenta pointed at him.
"Effective is not innocent" Ren stopped. Sano looked between them.
"Did Kurose give you that one?" Kenta shook his head.
"My sister. She heard I helped in a villain attack and spent twenty minutes yelling that helpful boys die first in stupid stories" Ren considered.
"Your sister has genre awareness""She has volume" Sano snorted. Then his gaze moved behind Ren.
"Brainwashing guy incoming" Shinso walked toward them with his bag slung low, hair worse than usual, eyes half-lidded in a way that dared the world to comment. The charger cable Hana had given him was not visible today, but Ren knew it was probably in the bag. That seemed irrelevant. It was not. Shinso stopped beside them.
"Still alive?" Ren said "Yes. You?"
"Unfortunately" Kenta looked at him.
"You need new material" Shinso looked back.
"Survive another villain attack and maybe I'll update it" The silence after that lasted half a second too long. Shinso noticed. His mouth tightened. Sano said "Too soon" Shinso looked away.
"Yeah" No one made him apologize. That was better. Maybe. Kenta shifted the conversation with the subtlety of a thrown chair.
"Kurose messaged the whole class again" Ren checked his phone. No new message.
"She probably assumes I read it already" Shinso said "She probably assumes your mother read it to you while you tried to classify the punctuation" Ren looked at him.
"Did you eat breakfast?" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"That was a hostile pivot""Did you?" Kenta pointed between them.
"What is this?" Sano said "Domestic harassment" Shinso said "I ate" Ren waited. Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Toast" Ren continued waiting.
"And yogurt" Ren nodded.
"Acceptable" Shinso glared.
"If your mother taught you that word, I'm returning the charger" Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
"You still have it?" Shinso froze. Kenta's eyes brightened. Sano leaned in.
"Oh?" Shinso's face became lethal.
"No" Ren said "He does" Shinso turned toward him.
"Betrayal""Precision" Kenta looked delighted.
"Why does Akiyama's mother have hostage rights over your charger?"
"She doesn't""She gave you a charger?"
"No" Ren said "Yes" Shinso looked like he was considering whether murder counted as a medical violation of Ren's restrictions. Sano grinned.
"Brainwashing guy got adopted by a charger" Shinso pointed at him.
"Say adopted again and I'll make you compliment your knee brace" The word passed through Ren more sharply than it should have. Adopted. Not now. Not that. Too fast. Too much. Still, the future flickered at the edge of the joke like light under a closed door. Shinso saw his face. The glare changed. Not softer. More careful. Sano lifted both hands.
"Retracted" Kenta looked confused, then decided not to press. Good. Maybe the whole class was learning dangerous things about silence. They entered together. That alone was new. Inside, U. A.' s corridors were clean enough to seem accusatory. The floors had been polished. The walls bore no damage. Notices had been placed near stairwells reminding students of updated emergency procedures. Faculty stood at intersections where there had never been faculty before.
A Support Course student flinched when a locker slammed. A Hero Course student from 1-B stopped mid-sentence when Present Mic's voice came over the speaker for a routine announcement, then laughed too loudly afterward. The building functioned. The bodies inside it did not yet agree. Ren's route to class took him past a corridor leading toward the training facilities. It was blocked by a temporary sign. AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY He looked at it for less than two seconds. Shinso said "No" Ren turned.
"What?"
"No""I did not say anything""You looked like a dog seeing an open door""That comparison is flawed" Kenta said "No, it's good" Sano nodded.
"Very good" Ren decided he did not like group supervision. That probably meant it was working. Class 1-C was not full when they arrived. Some students had been kept home by parents. Some were at medical follow-up. Two were on remote participation because they could not tolerate campus yet. Their desks remained empty, which made the room feel less like a classroom and more like a roll call after a storm. Kurose stood at the front. She was writing on the board. Not the date. Not the schedule. Three sentences.
Survival is not certification. Usefulness is not consent. Crisis performance is not identity. Ren stopped in the doorway. Shinso bumped lightly into his shoulder.
"Move" Ren moved. Slowly. His ribs approved of slowly. The class settled with more care than usual. Chairs scraped less. Bags were set down instead of thrown. Conversations stopped before Kurose asked for silence. That alone would have frightened anyone paying attention. Kurose turned.
"Good morning" A scattered response. She looked over the room.
"Again" This time louder.
"Good morning, Kurose-sensei" She nodded.
"Better. Not because I care about volume, but because shared routine prevents collapse in ways you will resent and need" Yabara raised a hand.
"That was the least comforting comfort I've ever heard""Then you understood it" She tapped the board beneath the first sentence.
"Survival is not certification" Ren kept his eyes on the words. Kurose continued "Several of you have already begun turning USJ into evidence. Evidence that you are braver than others. Evidence that you deserve Hero Course consideration. Evidence that your Quirk is misunderstood. Evidence that you can handle danger. Evidence that the entrance exam was wrong" Several students looked away. Ren did not. He lacked the energy for pretending not to be addressed. Kurose's gaze touched him anyway.
"And yes, in some cases, USJ produced evidence. Some of you acted with courage. Some of you used Quirks effectively under emergency conditions. Some of you protected classmates. Some of you followed instructions when fear made disobedience attractive. That matters" The room held very still. Kurose's voice sharpened.
"But surviving a villain attack does not mean you are ready for more villain attacks. Being useful in a crisis does not mean the crisis was a test you passed. Trauma is not a qualification exam" Shinso stared at his desk. Kenta leaned back with his jaw clenched. Arai looked at the board with her wrapped horn bases barely visible beneath her hair. Ren wrote nothing. He had promised. No, he had been ordered. Both. Kurose tapped the second sentence.
"Usefulness is not consent. If someone helped you yesterday, they are not now obligated to continue being useful in the same way. Shinso is not your emergency Quirk button. Akiyama is not your incident analyst. Fujimura is not your flash grenade. Arai is not your security sensor. Kenta is not your doorstop. Sano is not your barricade. Nana is not your proof that you were comforting. Reina is not your rescued civilian for emotional closure" The names landed one by one. Not gently. Accurately.
Fujimura exhaled shakily. Kenta looked at the ceiling. Nana started crying silently, then looked annoyed at herself for doing it. Kurose did not apologize.
"People can act in roles during emergencies. They do not become those roles afterward" Ren's hand tightened around his pencil. He had not realized he was holding it. Kurose saw. Of course. She did not call him out. Worse. Better. She tapped the third sentence.
"Crisis performance is not identity. If you froze, you are not useless. If you fought, you are not only violence. If you cried, you are not weak. If you stayed calm, you are not fine. If you gave orders, you are not automatically a leader. If you followed, you are not automatically dependent. If your Quirk saved someone, it does not erase every fear people have ever placed on it. If your body kept moving through injury, that does not make injury your purpose" That one struck too directly to pretend otherwise.
Ren looked at the desk. The room was too quiet. Kurose let the silence work. Then she turned from the board and moved to the front of the room, sitting on the edge of the teacher's desk instead of standing behind it.
"Now we discuss practical matters" The class seemed to breathe again. Practical was safer. Usually.
"Modified schedule remains in effect for one week minimum. No combat activities. No physical education. No interdepartmental training. No visiting training facilities without authorization. No media contact. No posting about USJ. No private interviews. No uploading speculation. No reenactments" Yabara lowered his hand before raising it fully. Kurose said "Good choice" He put it down.
"Academic work resumes in limited form. Civics, Quirk law, mathematics, language, and history continue. Hero society analysis will continue with modified content because pretending recent events did not occur would be pedagogically dishonest and personally insulting" Sano muttered "Of course she says pedagogically after a villain attack" Kurose looked at him.
"Would you prefer stupid?"
"No, sensei""Good" There it was again. Ren wondered whether U. A. had always relied on that word and he had only started noticing after USJ. Kurose lifted a tablet.
"Support services are mandatory for students who were at USJ. Mandatory does not mean punishment. It means adults are not pretending that fifteen-year-olds can self-report trauma accurately" Shinso leaned back.
"I feel attacked by the accuracy" Kurose's eyes moved to him.
"Good" He grimaced.
"Walked into that""Yes" A hand rose near the back. Miyazaki. She had not been in Shelter B. Storm Zone placement, according to partial group reports. No visible injuries. Face too pale.
"Sensei""Yes""Are they going to cancel the Sports Festival?" The room changed instantly. There it was. The question everyone had been holding like a bruise. Ren kept his face still. Kurose did not answer immediately. That was answer enough.
"As of this morning, no final public decision has been announced" Miyazaki swallowed.
"But they're discussing it""Yes" Kenta said "They should cancel it" Yabara said "They won't" Nana whispered "How do you know?" Yabara shrugged, too sharply.
"Because everyone is watching" That was true. Too true. Kurose's expression became unreadable.
"The Sports Festival is not today's topic" Ren almost believed her. Then she continued.
"But you need to understand something before the institution tells you what it wants you to feel. If the Sports Festival continues, some people will call it proof that U. A. stands strong. Some will call it reckless. Some will call it inspiring. Some will call it propaganda. Some will call it necessary. Many will be partly right" Shinso's eyes narrowed. Ren looked at the board. Survival is not certification. Usefulness is not consent. Crisis performance is not identity.
Kurose said "If it continues, General Studies students will not use USJ as an excuse to self-destruct for visibility" Several heads turned toward Ren. He looked forward. Kurose looked at the class, not him.
"If it continues, Hero Course students will be under immense pressure to reassure the public. Some will welcome it. Some will not recognize the pressure until it has already shaped them. Business Course students will study the narrative. Support Course students will be asked to perform competence through technology. General Studies students will be tempted to prove they belonged in a story that did not name them" That one made the room hurt. Kenta's fingers curled around the edge of his desk. Sano looked away.
Shinso's expression flattened. Ren felt the sentence like a hand on the back of his neck. Kurose continued "This is why we study systems. Not to sound clever. To avoid being eaten by them while calling it ambition" No one spoke. Then the bell rang. Everyone flinched. Not all. Enough. Kurose looked up at the speaker.
"Routine transition bell" she said immediately "Not emergency tone" The room breathed. Ren noticed the speed of her response. Prepared. Good. Necessary. Terrible.
"Five-minute break" Kurose said "No leaving the classroom without telling me. Akiyama, stay seated. Shinso, stop planning to stand just because I told him not to" Shinso's mouth opened. Closed. Kenta laughed first. Small. Then Sano. Then a few others. Shinso looked offended enough to make it almost normal. Ren stayed seated. Not because he wanted to. Because standing would have hurt and because everyone was watching for whether he would disobey care in public. He hated how effective public accountability was.
During the break, Nana approached his desk. Reina hovered one step behind her. Ren straightened carefully. Nana gripped the edge of her sleeve.
"I read your message" Ren nodded.
"You do not owe me a response""I know. I mean, I'm trying to know" That was a good distinction. Reina said "Fear was not failure" Ren looked at her.
"You remembered""I wrote it down" Nana looked embarrassed.
"So did I" Ren did not know what to do with that. Shinso, from the next desk, said "Say you're glad it helped before you make it weird" Ren turned. Shinso stared at the ceiling. Ren looked back at Nana and Reina.
"I'm glad it helped" Nana smiled. Small. Wounded. Real. Then she said "You were scared too, right?" The room did not stop. But Ren felt the question make a circle around them. He could have answered clinically. He did not.
"Yes" Nana exhaled.
"Okay" Not relief. Not exactly. Permission, perhaps. She returned to her seat. Ren watched her go. Shinso said quietly "Congratulations. You sounded human" Ren said "Your coaching was adequate""High praise from a medical receipt" Kenta leaned over.
"Why medical receipt?" Shinso said "He texts like one" Sano called from two desks away.
"He talks like one too" Ren said "Medical receipts are structurally useful" Kenta grinned.
"There it is" The second half of class shifted to rumor correction and legal basics around student privacy after villain incidents. Kurose explained what media could not legally publish, what they would try to imply anyway, and why students should not confuse public attention with public understanding. Ren listened. Noted mentally. Did not write. This restraint deserved recognition. No one gave it. Unfair.
At lunch, modified schedule kept 1-C together in a monitored section rather than allowing full cross-department mixing. The cafeteria was open, but seating had been reorganized to prevent crowding. Staff moved along aisles. Conversations dipped whenever teachers passed. Lunch Rush had produced a menu heavy on comfort foods and recovery nutrition. Ren suspected Recovery Girl had interfered. He received a tray with rice, miso soup, grilled fish, vegetables, and fruit. Shinso received the same.
They looked at each other. Shinso said "Your mother infiltrated the cafeteria" Ren said "Unlikely" Kenta sat across from them with curry.
"Are we sure?" Sano sat beside him.
"I'm not" Arai joined with her tray, wraps still around the base of her horns.
"Food is quieter today" Everyone looked at her. She blinked.
"I mean the cafeteria. Less metal. Less tray clatter. They changed something" Ren looked around. Rubber mats under tray return. Extra staff to reduce dropped utensils. No overhead music. Soft dividers along the walls.
"Noise dampening measures" he said Arai nodded.
"It helps" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Don't look pleased. You didn't do it" Ren said "I am pleased that someone did" Kenta chewed thoughtfully.
"Is this what competent adults feel like?" Sano said "Suspicious" Arai said "Rare" They ate. For a few minutes, eating was simply eating. Then the cafeteria doors opened, and a group from 1-A entered. The room noticed. It tried not to. Failed. Izuku Midoriya walked between Uraraka and Iida, looking better than he had in triage and worse than he probably wanted anyone to know. His hand was bandaged, his posture careful, his eyes too alert. Uraraka smiled at someone who greeted her, but the smile tired quickly.
Iida walked stiffly, chopping every movement into proper angles as if discipline could file guilt down. Bakugo entered behind them with Kirishima. He looked furious. That part was normal. The fact that his fury seemed quieter was not. Todoroki walked alone. Untouched in appearance. Not untouched. Ren watched him for half a second longer than intended. Ice, distance, half a body refusing inheritance. Not now. The Sports Festival was not today's topic. Fragments disagreed. Ren looked away. Too late. Shinso had seen.
"You do that with Hero Course a lot" Ren picked up his chopsticks.
"Observe?"
"Look like you're reading a warning label" Kenta looked over.
"Hero Course should come with warning labels" Sano said "Some of them do. Explosive boy is self-labeling" Bakugo's head turned from across the cafeteria as if insult had its own frequency. Sano froze. Kenta looked delighted and terrified. Bakugo's eyes narrowed at their table. Then at Ren. Then at Shinso. For one second, the cafeteria held a line between worlds. Bakugo looked at Ren's bandaged arm and wrapped ribs, visible only by stiffness under the blazer. His mouth twisted. Ren expected something.
General Studies. Extras. Still broken. Still missed. Bakugo turned away. Kirishima said something to him. Bakugo snapped back without volume enough to hear. They moved on. Sano exhaled.
"Survived" Shinso said "You almost became an educational example" Sano looked wounded.
"I was supporting class morale" Ren watched Bakugo sit. No insult. Again. The absence had pattern now. After lunch, Ren found a message from Izuku. Can we talk later? Not details if we're not allowed. Just alive-first talk. Ren stared at it. Shinso looked over his shoulder with no shame.
"Persistent" Ren angled the phone away.
"Privacy""You looked constipated by concern""That is an imprecise metaphor""But emotionally accurate" Ren considered the message. Not today? Maybe. Kurose had said brief responses. He typed: Later today after modified schedule. Ten minutes. No apologies first. Izuku replied almost immediately. Okay. No apologies first. Thank you. Ren put the phone away. Shinso leaned back.
"You're going to make him say alive before sorry?"
"Yes""That's annoyingly healthy""I learned it under duress""From your mother?"
"Yes" Shinso looked down at his tray.
"She's good at that" Ren did not ask at what. He knew. The afternoon class was shorter. History of hero institutions after high-profile villain incidents. Kurose did not hide the relevance. She discussed past attacks on training grounds, public trust cycles, hero school reforms, media pressure, and how institutions often framed student resilience as proof of institutional success. Ren managed not to write the sentence student resilience as institutional camouflage. Barely.
Kurose's eyes found him exactly when he thought it. Ridiculous. At the end of the day, she dismissed students in groups to avoid crowding. Ren, Shinso, Kenta, Sano, Arai, Nana, and Reina were held last. Ren expected another welfare check. Instead, Kurose stood by the door with her tablet.
"Before you leave. Each of you will identify one concrete support you will use today" Kenta said "My sister yelling""Accepted" Sano said "Ice pack""Accepted" Arai said "Quiet room before homework""Accepted" Nana said "Call my cousin""Accepted" Reina said "Walk home with Nana""Accepted" Shinso said "Food" Kurose looked at him.
"Specific" He sighed.
"Dinner""Where?" His expression closed. Ren looked at his desk. Not his moment. Shinso said "Placement" Kurose held his gaze.
"Accepted. Message if that changes" He looked irritated.
"Fine" Kurose turned to Ren. Ren had several answers prepared. All were bad. Notebook. Protocol. Pain tracking. Sleep schedule. Family monitoring. He chose the one least likely to become work.
"Parents" Kurose nodded.
"Accepted" The word should not have landed as hard as it did. After class, Ren moved slowly through the corridor with Shinso beside him. Kenta and Sano went ahead arguing about whether Kurose's class counted as therapy if nobody cried on purpose. Arai stopped at a quiet room. Nana and Reina left together. The corridor was less crowded now. Still watched. Still U. A. Shinso said "Parents is a broad support""Yes""You hate broad categories""Yes""Must be serious" Ren glanced at him.
"You said dinner""I eat dinner""Where?" Shinso's shoulders rose.
"At the place I sleep" Not home. Again. Ren did not correct it. Shinso would hear correction as pity. So Ren said "Hana may ask later""Your mother needs hobbies""She has several. Feeding people is one""That's not a hobby. That's a campaign""Yes" They reached the entrance. Rain had started again, light and steady. Hana waited under an umbrella near the pickup area. Not alone. Daichi stood beside her. Ren stopped. Shinso stopped too.
"That's excessive" Shinso said Ren looked at him.
"They are here for me""Sure" Ren did not answer. Hana saw them and lifted a hand. Then, after a brief hesitation, lifted the small bag in her other hand. Shinso stared.
"No" Ren said "You don't know what it is""I know exactly what it is" Daichi called from under the umbrella "It's not adoption paperwork" Shinso froze. Ren closed his eyes. Hana elbowed Daichi. Daichi looked apologetic.
"Too direct?"
"Yes" Hana said Shinso's face had gone blank in a way Ren disliked. Ren spoke before anyone else could.
"It is probably food" Shinso looked at him.
"Probably?"
"Hana has patterns" Hana reached them.
"It is food" Shinso looked at Daichi. Daichi raised one hand.
"I apologize. Bad joke" Shinso's expression remained guarded. But he did not leave. That mattered. Hana held out the bag.
"No paperwork. No meaning you have to accept. Just extra food because I made too much" Ren looked at the bag. That was a lie. A kind one. Shinso knew it too. His hand remained at his side. Hana did not move closer. Rain tapped against the umbrella. Finally, Shinso said "I can't always take food from you" Hana nodded.
"Correct" He blinked. She continued "Today is not always" There was nowhere easy to put that. Shinso took the bag.
"Thanks""You're welcome" Daichi said "And sorry" Shinso looked at him.
"You should be" Daichi accepted this with grave seriousness.
"I am" Shinso glanced at Ren.
"You survived your first day back" Ren said "So did you""Unfortunately""New material pending" He almost smiled. Almost. Then he turned and walked toward the station path with the food bag in one hand and his shoulders slightly less high than before. Hana watched him go. Ren watched Hana watching him. Daichi cleared his throat.
"I really am sorry" Ren said "He did not leave" Daichi exhaled.
"Good" Hana looked at him. Daichi sighed.
"The word is unavoidable now" They drove home through rain. Ren's body hurt more than it had that morning, but not dangerously. His mind felt worse, which Kurose would probably classify as expected and important. He had returned to U. A. The building had stood. The class had met. Kurose had written sentences on the board that would probably stay in his head longer than medically recommended. Shinso had accepted food after Daichi nearly detonated the future by joking too close to it. Normal had not returned.
Something else had begun. At home, Ren opened his notebook after dinner with permission and supervision that everyone pretended was casual. He wrote: U. A. is operational. Not normal. Class 1-C is operational. Not normal. Kurose says survival is not certification. Correct. Unpleasant. He paused. Rain tapped at the window. His ribs pulsed. His scar itched once beneath the bandage, then quieted. He wrote: Today I entered the building and left it. No new injuries. Same number or fewer. This counts.
The sentence looked too small. Maybe that made it true. His phone buzzed. Shinso. Food was acceptable. Then: Daichi is bad at jokes. Ren showed his parents. Daichi winced. Hana smiled. Ren typed: He knows. Shinso replied: Good. Ren looked at the word. Again. Everywhere now. Maybe it had always been. He set the phone down and closed the notebook. For tonight, he did not write about Sports Festival. He did not write about Todoroki. He did not write about Midoriya's body being too small for the power inside it.
He did not write about Scar Tissue. He wrote only one more line on the outside edge of the page, small enough that it almost did not count. Returning is also an action. Then he stopped. Recovery, apparently, had paperwork of its own.
