Chương 58: The Name That Does Not Hurt
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 160 chương · ~40 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The hero name lesson arrived too early. Ren decided this before Kurose finished the first sentence. She stood at the front of Class 1-C with Midnight beside her, which was already enough to make half the room sit straighter and the other half experience the kind of panic that came from realizing professional hero society sometimes wore high heels and smiled like it knew where all your insecurities were kept.
On the board behind them, Kurose had written: PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY PUBLIC LANGUAGE SELF-NAMING Under that, in smaller writing: A name is not armor if it becomes a cage. Sano stared at the board. Then at Midnight. Then at the board again. His hand rose slowly. Kurose looked at him.
"No" Sano lowered his hand.
"I had not spoken""Your aura had" Midnight laughed softly.
"Oh, I like this class already" Kenta whispered to Arai "That is dangerous" Arai whispered back "Very" Ren sat with his notebook open, right hand flat on the page, left forearm covered by the light sleeve Recovery Girl had approved for school hours. The scars beneath it did not burn. His right index finger did not tighten. His ribs no longer hurt with normal breathing, though laughing remained medically unwise and socially unavoidable.
Shinso sat beside him, looking as if hero names were a trap designed by marketing departments to make children incriminate themselves. Ren understood. Unfortunately. Kurose began.
"After the Sports Festival, Hero Course students begin formal hero name selection. Because some of you are now entering cross-course evaluation, receiving agency interest, or being referenced in public reports, U. A. has decided that selected General Studies students will participate in a modified professional identity seminar" Sano's hand rose again. Kurose said "No costumes today" His hand lowered with visible grief. Midnight stepped forward, one finger raised.
"Names matter" Her voice filled the room without becoming loud.
"A hero name is a promise, a brand, a shield, a weapon, a memory hook, and sometimes a mistake you spend ten years regretting because you chose it at fifteen while sleep-deprived and emotionally unstable" A few students looked personally attacked. Midnight smiled.
"Good. Feel that. It means you are listening" She turned her gaze across the class.
"Some names make civilians trust you before you arrive. Some make villains underestimate you. Some make children remember you when they are scared. Some names sell merchandise. Some names outlive the person who chose them. Some names turn into pressure. Some names become traps" Her eyes landed briefly on Ren. Not lingering. Long enough. Ren looked at his notebook. Scar Hero. Painproof. Scar Boy. Unbreakable. Public names people had tried to place over his skin before U. A.
had finished writing no damage immunity into his file. Midnight continued.
"Today is not about choosing a perfect name. It is about learning what you are allowed to refuse" Kurose nodded. The room changed. Ren's right hand relaxed by one fraction. Midnight picked up a stack of blank cards.
"Each of you will write three things. First, a name other people might try to give you. Second, why that name is dangerous. Third, one name, word, or direction you might choose for yourself instead" Sano whispered "This is emotional paperwork" Kurose said "Yes" Sano stared.
"She admitted it" Kenta said "You walked into that" Everyone received a card. Ren stared at his. A name other people might try to give you. Easy. Too easy. He wrote: Painproof His hand paused. Then, under why dangerous: It rewards people for ignoring pain. He stared at the sentence. Good. Horrible. True. Beside him, Shinso wrote something, stopped, crossed it out so aggressively the card nearly tore, then wrote again. Ren did not look. That was becoming a habit.
Across the room, Kenta frowned at his card as if names were a type of opponent he could not push out of bounds. Arai wrote slowly. Sano wrote too quickly, scratched it out, then wrote again with visible effort. Midnight walked between desks. No one asked what her hero name had meant when she chose it. That was probably survival instinct. After several minutes, Kurose called the room back.
"Volunteers?" Sano's hand shot up. Kurose looked deeply suspicious. Sano stood.
"Other people might call me Comic Relief" A few students groaned. Sano raised one finger.
"Dangerous because it makes morale look useless unless it is funny, and sometimes morale is logistics, timing, or making someone breathe before they panic" The groans stopped. Ren looked up. Sano's ears were red. He looked at his card.
"My direction is Signal" Kurose's expression shifted. Midnight smiled.
"Signal" Sano nodded.
"Because a signal can be ridiculous or important depending on whether someone needed it" The room held the answer. Kurose said "Good" Sano sat down so fast he nearly missed the chair. Kenta stared at him.
"That was actually good" Sano covered his face.
"Do not ruin this by witnessing me" Arai volunteered next, quietly.
"Other people might call me Support Girl" Midnight's smile vanished.
"Dangerous because it makes my work sound secondary before anyone knows what it does. My direction is Calibration" Kurose wrote the word on the board. Calibration. Kenta went after her because apparently bravery could be contagious if applied carefully.
"Other people might call me Wall" He looked uncomfortable.
"Dangerous because walls do not choose. They just get hit. My direction is Load-Bearing" Midnight's eyebrows rose.
"That is a very strong direction" Kenta sat down before praise could become fatal. Ren wrote the three words in his notebook. Signal. Calibration. Load-Bearing. General Studies was not waiting room. Again. Again until true. Kurose looked at Shinso. Shinso stared back.
"No" Kurose said "You were not called""Good" Midnight tilted her head.
"Hitoshi Shinso" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Betrayal by guest authority" Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"Stand up, please" He stood. Slowly. Like the chair had personally insulted him again. Midnight smiled without softness.
"Only if you choose" That stopped him. Consent undercut defiance annoyingly well. He looked at his card.
"Other people might call me Mind Control" His voice stayed flat.
"Dangerous because it makes the person disappear behind the fear" The room was silent. Very silent. Shinso's fingers tightened around the card.
"My direction" He stopped. For one second, Ren thought he would sit down. Then Shinso continued.
"My direction is Responder" Midnight's expression changed. Kurose's pen paused. Shinso looked at the card rather than the room.
"Because my Quirk starts when someone responds, but hero work cannot. If they do not answer, I still have to" Ren looked down at his notebook. He wrote the word. Responder. Then under it: Second answer. Kurose said "Good" Shinso sat down, face carefully empty and ears red. Ren did not look at him. Friendship. Definitely. Midnight's gaze moved to Ren.
"Akiyama Ren" The room did not turn toward him. Not fully. Class 1-C had learned not to make looking into pressure. That made it harder. Ren stood. His card felt too light. Midnight's eyes rested on him with professional attention, not pity. Kurose stood near the board. Recovery Girl was not in the room, but Ren could feel her rules anyway. No public medical details. No Quirk provocation. No pain branding. No letting adults turn survival into a costume. Ren looked at his card.
"Other people might call me Painproof" A few students inhaled. Not loudly. Enough. Ren continued.
"Dangerous because it rewards people for ignoring pain. It suggests my body is safest when it is least believed" Midnight's face lost all performance. Kurose's expression did not change, which meant it changed internally. Ren looked at the third line. His hand had written several possible words before settling. Scar Tissue was not a hero name. It was a Quirk name. A file name. A warning. A record of damage and survival. It was not what he wanted children to yell when rubble shifted overhead.
It was not what he wanted an agency to print on a brochure. It was not what he wanted Endeavor to say while imagining pressure. Ren breathed.
"My direction is Anchor" The room became quiet in a different way. Ren kept his eyes on the card.
"Not because I hold everything. That would be dangerous. Because an anchor is only useful when it knows what it is attached to, what it can hold, and when holding would sink the ship" He looked up.
"I do not know if it is my name. But it does not start with pain" No one spoke. Then Midnight smiled. Not bright. Not theatrical. Real.
"That is an excellent direction" Kurose wrote on the board. Anchor. Ren sat down before the word could become too large. Shinso's card touched the edge of his desk. Not handed over. Just placed in reach. Ren glanced. Responder. Under it, in smaller writing: Not Make Them Answer. Ren's throat tightened. He moved his own card half an inch. Shinso glanced. Anchor. Under it: Not Hold Until Breaking. Neither said anything. The lesson continued. More names appeared. Some awkward. Some funny. Some too sharp to laugh at.
Midnight treated each one like it mattered because it did, even when it would change later. Especially when it would change later. Kurose kept writing selected words on the board until the room had become a field of possible selves. Signal. Calibration. Load-Bearing. Responder. Anchor. Quiet Step. Backline. Patchwork. No, not Patchwork, because Reina looked at Ren after writing it and immediately crossed it out with a mortified expression until Ren shook his head slightly and wrote on his own page: Words overlap.
Not theft. She saw it and breathed again. At the end of the seminar, Midnight stood before the board.
"You are not required to choose today. You are required to notice. If a name makes you smaller, ask why. If a name makes you feel powerful, ask what it costs. If a name makes other people comfortable too quickly, ask what part of you it hides" She looked toward the whole room.
"And if the world gives you a name before you are ready, you are allowed to answer""No" Kurose folded her arms.
"That is a complete sentence" Sano whispered "A sacred sentence" Kurose said "A legal one" The bell rang. No one moved immediately. Then the spell broke, because school did not allow revelations to remain uninterrupted by schedules. Students packed bags. Kenta and Arai compared cards quietly. Sano tried to convince them that Signal required a dramatic pose and was unanimously overruled.
Reina approached Ren to apologize again for Patchwork, and Ren told her the overlap was not harm unless used carelessly, which made her nod with too much seriousness and retreat. Midnight stopped by Ren's desk before leaving.
"Anchor" Ren looked up.
"Not final""Of course not" She smiled.
"But it tells me something useful" Ren waited.
"You are trying to choose a name that gives civilians something other than your wound to hold" The sentence landed cleanly enough to hurt. Ren nodded.
"Yes""Good" The word again. Midnight's version had perfume and steel in it. She looked at Shinso.
"Responder has teeth" Shinso blinked.
"Is that good?"
"Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. That is why you train" She left before either could answer. Kurose collected the cards only from students who consented to submit them for evaluation files. Ren submitted his. Shinso hesitated, then submitted his too with the expression of someone handing over a small animal and expecting bureaucracy to bite it. Kurose accepted both cards without comment. That was better. After class, Ren expected the matter to end for the day. This proved optimistic.
At lunch, Midoriya appeared holding a notebook against his chest like a shield and a confession. Shinso saw him first.
"No" Midoriya stopped.
"I did not say anything""Your eyebrows did" Uraraka stood behind him with a lunch tray and an apologetic expression.
"I told him not to ambush" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"This is technically adjacent approach rather than ambush if adequate distance is maintained" Shinso stared.
"You are the reason rules become long" Ren looked at Midoriya.
"Hero names?" Midoriya nodded.
"We had our session this morning" Ren gestured to the open seat. Midoriya sat carefully, fingers still bandaged but less rigid than before. Uraraka and Iida joined after receiving no objection from the table. Shinso looked personally wronged by the expansion of lunch diplomacy. Midoriya placed his notebook on the table but did not open it.
"I chose Deku" The table froze. Ren looked at him. Kenta, halfway through drinking water, stopped. Arai's eyes widened. Sano whispered "Bold" Shinso's face went completely flat. Midoriya hurried on.
"I know what it meant before. I know. But Uraraka said it felt like someone who can do it, and I thought about that, and I know reclaiming names is complicated and maybe I am rushing, but" Ren lifted one hand. Midoriya stopped. Ren asked "Is it punishment?" Midoriya's mouth closed. He looked down at the notebook. Then back up.
"No" Ren waited. Midoriya said "I do not think so. I think it is the first name that ever hurt me that I can choose without pretending it did not hurt" Shinso looked at him sharply. Uraraka's eyes softened. Iida's hands folded tightly on the table. Ren considered. A reclaimed wound was still a wound. But not all scarred names belonged in the same category. The question was not whether the name had hurt. The question was who held it now. Ren said "Then write down why it is dangerous" Midoriya blinked.
"What?"
"Hero name seminar. First, name others gave you. Second, why dangerous. Third, what you choose instead" Midoriya opened his notebook immediately. Shinso groaned.
"You activated him" Ren said "Controlled activation" Midoriya wrote quickly, then stopped.
"Dangerous because I might use it to prove the people who looked down on me were secretly right" Ren nodded.
"Good" Midoriya flinched. Then smiled weakly.
"I hate and like that word now" Shinso said "Join the epidemic" Uraraka leaned forward.
"What did you choose?" Ren looked at his lunch.
"Direction" Midoriya's eyes brightened.
"Not final""Still" Ren said "Anchor" Midoriya's expression did something complicated. Not envy. Not exactly. Recognition.
"That fits" Ren looked up.
"Does it?" Midoriya nodded.
"You make people check what they are attached to" Shinso muttered "That was disgustingly accurate" Ren looked away. Iida spoke next.
"A hero name must also be pronounceable under stress, memorable for civilians, and ethically compatible with conduct" Sano pointed at him.
"You had a spreadsheet" Iida stiffened.
"That is an unfounded accusation" Uraraka looked away. Midoriya looked away. Shinso stared. Iida adjusted his glasses.
"It was a table" Sano whispered "Heroic" The lunch table survived hero names better than expected. Barely. Then Todoroki appeared. Not at the table. Near it. He held a tray. He looked at Ren first, then Midoriya, then Shinso, then the available space at the edge of the table as if it were a combat scenario with social consequences. Uraraka saved everyone by saying "Todoroki, do you want to sit?" Todoroki looked at her. Then at the table.
"If it is acceptable" Shinso whispered "This table is becoming politically unstable" Ren said "Sit" Todoroki sat. He placed his tray down with careful precision. For several seconds, no one spoke. Then Sano leaned across from further down the table, where he had migrated without authorization.
"Hero name?" Kenta said "Sano" Todoroki answered anyway.
"Shoto" The table quieted. Midoriya blinked.
"Your own name?" Todoroki nodded.
"For now" Ren looked at him. Todoroki's gaze met his briefly. The door is mine. Not a hero name. A statement. A boundary. A refusal to let another inherited word cover him before he knew what the first one meant. Ren nodded once.
"Good" Todoroki's face shifted by almost nothing. Shinso covered his eyes.
"It reached him too" Todoroki looked confused. Ren said "Ignore him""That seems wise" Shinso lowered his hand.
"Rude but accurate" The conversation moved unevenly after that. Hero names made everyone too visible. Midoriya tried not to mutter and failed softly. Iida discussed legacy without saying Ingenium too loudly. Uraraka talked about making a name that could support her family without sounding like a sales pitch. Todoroki mostly listened. Ren ate because Hana had somehow arranged with reality that lunch would remain enforceable even during identity formation. After lunch, Kurose called Ren to her office.
He expected a protocol issue. He did not expect Nezu on the monitor, Recovery Girl in a chair, and All Might present in hero form on the screen from a separate secure room. Not thin form. Good. This was not that kind of meeting. Kurose gestured for Ren to sit.
"This is brief" Ren looked at the assembled adults.
"That has become an unreliable sentence" Recovery Girl said "He learns" Nezu smiled.
"We are here regarding public language" Ren sat. Kurose placed a printed article on the desk. A clipped headline. SCAR HERO AND SPORTS FESTIVAL MIRACLE STUDENTS DRAW AGENCY INTEREST Ren read the words. Scar Hero. Miracle. Students. His hand stayed flat. No heat. Progress. Recovery Girl watched the monitor anyway. Kurose said "We cannot stop all public language. We can decide what we do and do not confirm" Nezu said "Your submitted direction, Anchor, will remain internal unless you choose otherwise.
Scar Tissue remains restricted provisional Quirk language. We will not release either publicly" Ren nodded.
"Good" All Might's voice came through the secure speaker.
"Young Akiyama, may I comment?" Ren looked at the screen.
"Yes" All Might's smile was softer than broadcast, even in hero form.
"A hero name is allowed to be aspirational. It does not have to describe the wound that made you begin" Ren absorbed that. Recovery Girl muttered "Good sentence" All Might's smile flickered with visible pride. Ren said "You practiced""I did" Kurose looked between them.
"This is becoming contagious" Nezu seemed delighted. Ren looked at the article again. Scar Hero. He did not feel nothing. That would have been easier. Part of him still wanted to tear the name apart. Part of him wanted the world to know it was wrong. Part of him wanted to answer so loudly that no one could misname him again. But answer could become chase. Chase could become performance. Performance could become injury. He breathed.
"What is the recommended response?" Kurose said "No direct response. U. A. continues broad privacy statement. If asked, we say student hero names and provisional Quirk details are not public information" Ren nodded.
"So Anchor stays mine" Nezu said "Until you choose otherwise" That sentence mattered. It should not have. It did. Ren left the office with no announcement, no public correction, no dramatic refusal of the headline. That felt unsatisfying. Good. Probably. After classes, Cross-Course Evaluation Block 2 began in the auxiliary room. Aizawa had placed two chairs, one table, a rubber ball, a smooth disk, a strip of cloth, and three blank cards on the mat. Shinso stared.
"This room is developing recurring villains" Aizawa said "Sit" Ren sat. Shinso sat. Kurose wrote the block title on the whiteboard. NAMES UNDER STRESS Ren looked at it. Of course. Aizawa picked up one card. He looked at Shinso.
"If someone calls you villain, what happens to your body?" Shinso's face went blank. Aizawa waited. Shinso exhaled.
"Jaw tight. Shoulders up. Hands curl. Want to provoke answer""Good. Walk" Shinso stood and walked the taped line while Kurose, from the side, said the word once.
"Villain" Shinso's foot hit the tape. Not over. On. He stopped. Reset. Again. The second time, his foot stayed inside. His hands curled.
"Report""Hands""Again" By the fifth time, the word still hurt. But it no longer owned the whole body. Aizawa turned to Ren.
"If someone calls you Painproof, what happens?" Ren looked at the smooth disk on the table.
"Anger. Disgust. Desire to prove pain exists. Desire to show injury as evidence. Right index tension risk if object slips" Aizawa nodded.
"Move the disk" Recovery Girl was not there, but the medical monitor was. Ren moved the disk from one side of the table to the other. Slow. Deliberate. The disk slipped once. His finger warmed. He released. The disk dropped.
"Stop condition observed" Kurose wrote. Aizawa said "Again later" Ren hated it less than before. Not much. Enough. Then Aizawa did something unexpected. He placed the blank cards on the floor. Deku. Responder. Anchor. He had written them himself. No flourish. No explanation. He looked at Midoriya's absent card, then Shinso, then Ren.
"Names are triggers until trained otherwise" Shinso stared at Responder like it might bite him. Ren looked at Anchor. It looked too small on the card. Too possible. Aizawa said "You do not have to choose them as final names. You do have to learn what your body does when a name lands" Kurose said "Public language is field pressure" Ren thought of headlines. Scar Hero. Miracle. Painproof. Professional interest. Extreme environment. Anchor. Responder. Deku. Shoto. Names could be doors. Names could be cages.
Names could be handles other people used to pull you toward their need. Training lasted forty minutes. No Quirk activation. No Brainwashing. No heroics. Just names spoken aloud, bodies reporting, feet staying inside tape, fingers releasing disks, breath slowing after words designed to hook. It was horrible. It was useful. Always both. At the end, Kurose handed each of them one blank card.
"Write the name you are not ready to use publicly, but are willing to protect privately" Ren looked at the card. He wrote: Anchor Shinso wrote: Responder Neither submitted these cards. Kurose did not ask for them.
"Keep them" Ren slid the card into his notebook. Shinso folded his once and placed it inside the page with Aizawa's sentence about spite. They left Gym Gamma as the evening settled across U. A. Near the gate, Todoroki passed them. He looked at Ren. Then at Shinso. Then said "Anchor" Ren stopped. Shinso's head turned sharply. Ren looked at Todoroki.
"How did you""Midoriya" Of course. Ren closed his eyes. Todoroki continued.
"He said it was not final. Then apologized for telling me. Then said he thought it mattered because it was not about pain. Then apologized again" Shinso said "That sounds like him" Ren opened his eyes. Todoroki's face remained calm.
"It suits the direction""Not final""I know" Silence. Then Todoroki said "Shoto is not final either" Ren nodded.
"No. But it is yours" Todoroki's expression shifted.
"Yes" He walked on. Shinso watched him go.
"That was socially competent enough to be alarming" Ren said "Everyone is growing. It is terrible" Shinso looked at him.
"Anchor" Ren did not flinch. That was new.
"Responder" Shinso did flinch. Less than expected. They both noticed. Neither commented. At home that night, Ren placed the card beside All Might's note and Todoroki's sentence. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. My father's interest is not my consent. Anchor. Three different kinds of naming. One from a Symbol learning warning. One from a son drawing a boundary. One from himself trying to choose a word that did not begin with damage. He opened his notebook. Not for fragment analysis.
For identity work, which was apparently a category now because U. A. had made paperwork out of every survivable emotion. He wrote: Scar Tissue is what happened. Then: Anchor is what I choose to practice. Then, after a long pause: A name should not ask me to bleed before it answers. He closed the notebook. From the kitchen, Hana called "Food before becoming symbolic" Ren looked toward the card. Then stood. The name stayed on the desk. It did not follow because it was not a chain. Not yet. Maybe never.
For tonight, Anchor was only a word. That made it light enough to keep.
